WELCOME

What better way to stretch out the summer and usher in a new year of creation, opportunity and discovery than with the iconic, steamy, and delightfully witty story of The Graduate. Mike Nichols’ 1967 film, starring Dustin Hoffman (in his breakout role), Anne Bancroft and Katharine Ross, brilliantly captured the zeitgeist of the 60s, a time that was brimming with exploration and revolution, and a generation that was anxiously looking to the future for answers. We might ask ourselves if those answers are any clearer for the so-called “millennials” in 2014. Is finding one's way in the world any less challenging today than it was for Benjamin? An important part of our mission is to bring you theatre that you can connect with; we hope that The Graduate and its place in our collective consciousness, its mix of romance, humour and music will awaken your nostalgia and happiest memories. We encourage you to help us fulfill another part of our mission: to nurture burgeoning theatre lovers, by letting them in on a bygone era that might seem eerily and excitingly familiar. Take a moment to browse the bios of the dazzling talent bringing this play to life. We are so proud to be part of director Andrew Shaver’s own history as he continues to make his way into the spotlight of Canadian theatre. We know there is a bright future in store for Luke Humphrey (mark my words, one day you’ll say “I saw him on the Segal Centre stage first!”). Brigitte Robinson (yes, that really is her name) and Georgina Beaty step with such grace and gusto into their legendary roles. Some of our favourite local performers Al Goulem, Jane Wheeler and Seska Lee take to the Segal stage for the first time, joined by our old pals, Graham Cuthbertson and Marcel Jeannin, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Finally, we delight in witnessing some of the city’s brightest young designers bring their own unique touch to this new production, all beautifully tied together by the original music of Justin Rutledge and Matthew Barber. Here it is…our first dream team for the beginning of our dream season. The pan is hot and we're just getting cooking. I hope you’ll come sample the rest of the season's savoury fare with me. Because there’s no place I’d rather be than in the home of live theatre. We're so glad you're here.

Lisa Rubin Artistic and Executive Director To all our patrons celebrating Rosh Hashanah, we wish you a sweet and inspiring New Year. Shana Tova! 3

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

Ben: I’ve had this feeling ever since I’ve graduated – this kind of compulsion to be rude – that I have to be rude all the time. Do you know what I mean? Elaine: Yes, I do. Ben: It’s like I’ve been playing some kind of game but the rules don’t make sense to me. They’re being made up by all the wrong people. No, I mean no one makes them up, they seem to have made themselves up.

The lines above, among many others from the film, have been omitted from the stage adaptation of The Graduate. I quote these specifically because they speak directly to the foundation upon which this particular production is built – one of shifting realities and uncertainty in times of change. The graduate, Benjamin Braddock, comes home from university, to all eyes but his, riding on top of the world. The crushing pressure he feels to appreciate his privilege and live up to expectations numbs him to the brink of emotional paralysis. It is from this point of departure that Ben sets out to redefine his reality. And it is from this point of departure that we set out to reimagine his story. Mike Nichols’ 1967 film changed the face of American cinema; it was never an option for us to simply recreate it. Tonight you will share in our collective imagination as we look back on this landmark piece of art and respectfully, boldly, and proudly stand on our own. I’ve been extraordinarily fortunate to be at the helm of such an arsenal of artistic talent. I am filled with gratitude for their (seemingly) unwavering trust in me as the rules of this particular game changed, sometimes from one day to the next. In truth, I was just making them up. And now they’re real. Have fun. Andrew Shaver Director

SYNOPSIS California, 1964 Benjamin Braddock is a week from his 21st birthday. He has just graduated and is living at home with his parents, who are excited to toast his success and plan his future. But Ben is feeling inexplicably lost, confused, unsure of what to do with himself, and is in no mood to celebrate. When he receives a sexual proposition from the most unexpected of people, Ben takes a plunge that will lead to new, strange and transformative waters. 7

INTERMISSION

The Sounds of a Generation:

An Interview with Justin Rutledge and Matthew Barber

Mike Nichols' 1967 film used music in a ground-breaking way that foreshadowed the advent of MTV and the modern music video. And though Simon and Garfunkel are inextricably linked to the film, they barely created any new music for it; most of the songs were preexisting. Canadian musicians, Matthew Barber and Justin Rutledge, on the other hand, have composed a slew of brand new songs specifically for the Segal Centre's re-imagined theatrical version of The Graduate. They sat down with Dramaturg-in-Residence, Caitlin Murphy, to discuss the process. [Caitlin Murphy] How did you feel when first approached to do music for The Graduate, which has such a famous soundtrack? [Justin Rutledge] It's quite scary when you come up against such iconic songs like “Mrs. Robinson” and “Sounds of Silence.” We've been listening to a lot of Simon and Garfunkel, and we're writing almost entirely on acoustic guitars. We're really paying attention to what they did as vocalists, together, because their sound is really unified. It's a classic sound. [Matthew Barber] ... but we're also not getting too obsessed with making everything sound exactly like how they would do it either. We want to still be able to let our own sound emerge. [CM] What character in The Graduate do you most connect with? [MB] I can relate to Ben. I can relate to feeling like a bit of a loner sometimes. [JR] I really like the turn Mr. Robinson takes in the second act. I've been that guy before. [CM] How is playing live music for a play different from playing your own concerts? [MB] There's a lot more stopping and starting, so it's a little hard to get into the rhythm of the music sometimes! But I just love being a part of something that's much bigger than what I'm doing... being a cog in the wheel of a production that's got all kinds of people involved, and contributing what we do is very satisfying. It also takes the pressure off a little bit too. [CM] How do you work together? What's it like to compose collaboratively?

8

INTERMISSION

[JR] It's all about vibe. I'm sort of a vibe guy. You have to pay attention to the vibe. The almighty vibe. Matt and I were hanging out last night and I went out to get something and I came back, and he had this little guitar line written and he was humming this melody, and you know I'll harmonize to it and then we'll throw a lyric line and that starts... It's a creative process. It helps that we're old friends too. [CM] What's your favourite band, song or music from the 60's?

“...It represents an important place and time, not just in musical history even, but in the history of us as a people.” - Justin Rutledge

[MB] I grew up with The Beatles. So I'd have to say The Beatles. [JR] “Teach Your Children” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. I just remember driving with my dad and that song came on the radio and it was the first time I really felt drawn towards a song. And yeah, The Beatles. [MB] I know that's the obvious one, but they're so good.

[CM] What do you think makes Simon and Garfunkel's music so enduring? [JR] It's an era. You hear that and you see images of the 60's... It represents an important place and time, not just in musical history even, but in the history of us as a people. It represents a very good place with ideals and I think people will always turn to that in times of darkness. BIOGRAPHIES

MARTIN SIROIS Lighting Design Martin Sirois is a light artist who works primarily in theatre. His geometric lighting designs, filled with symbolism, were recently seen in productions created by Christian Lapointe, Eric Jean, Wajdi Mouawad, Hanna Abd El Nour and Alexandre Marine. His lighting serves to create volume and give life to an empty space, before it is inhabited by the performers. Using the architectural functions of light without simply producing light, his design shapes the structure of the black space and then the setting through angles and colours. The darkness is divided to create a space that exists beyond the actors, the set and the stage itself. Martin’s aim is to give scenic value, psychological and emotional power to the light before even attempting to illuminate an object or a character. In this way, the audience member is open and ready to listen, feel, and observe. Martin is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada (Production, 2005). JESSE ASH Sound Design Jesse has been working with sound for over ten years. He has created Sound Designs for the Stratford Festival, The Grand Theatre, the National Arts Centre, Centaur Theatre, many memorable productions with SideMart Theatrical Grocery and more. Standouts include music and sound for the Segal's own productions of Top Girls, Scientific Americans and Sherlock Holmes (2013 META Award for best Sound Design), Design for The God that Comes, starring Hawksley Workman (2b Theatre), Daniel MacIvor's The Best Brothers (world premiere, Stratford Festival), Robert Wilson's Mind Gap (Norsk Teknisk Museum), and the public audio installation piece Aural Histories; Monument. Jesse is an instructor and Coach at the National Theatre School of Canada and enjoys making noise with Reversing Falls and on his own in his living room. GEORGE ALLISTER Video Design George is a new media producer, specializing in online videos and projection design for live performance and events. He has designed projections for many Segal Centre shows including Sherlock Holmes (2013), Same Time Next Year, Scientific Americans, Equus and Lies My Father Told Me (2010-2012). Last season, he designed the video projections for Centaur Theatre’s Book of BOB and Innocence Lost (2013), their co-production with the National Arts Centre. He has also worked for Infinithéâtre and Geordie Productions. George currently produces videos for the Segal Centre and Eclipse Productions and coaches video design for the National Theatre School. In December 2011, he was a co-creator and video specialist in a creation workshop for The Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst (Calgary’s Ghost River Productions & Vancouver’s Rumble Productions). For the past six years, he has worked closely with visual artist Sylvia Safdie as her assistant and video editor. In October 2014, he will be an artist resident in the Koumaria New Media Arts Residency, and will be performing at the Onassis Cultural Center in Athens, Greece.
