After a session on the sundeck by the pool, when the

ocean breezes have melted away the distractions of a techno driven life, you’re ready to get out there and see the sights.

Vacationers have many choices of things to do in

the Daytona Beach area, including tennis, golf and fishing, plus excursions to landmarks in neighborhoods new to you. Surfing, sailing and other types of water sports now include the latest trend, stand-up paddle boarding on calm waters for a close-up view of gentle sea creatures.

Whether you’re here on a golf outing or romantic

honeymoon, there’s a lot to see in Ormond Beach, New Smyrna Beach, Ponce Inlet and the entire Daytona Beach area.

We encourage you to mix it up. Don’t miss the Daytona

“Tennis Anyone” International Speedway or a spin around a go kart track. But

while you are making plans, indulge in a few hours at a plush spa and try one of the world-class golf courses that make Daytona Beach one of the top golf destinations in the world.

Famous golf courses designed by the legends of the sport also offer great pro shops and workshops for

every skill level. Both courses at LPGA International are highly rated for their playability and outstanding natural settings. Golf aficionados will find more than 25 courses within 30 minutes of the beach; your hotel can usually arrange tee times for you.

Fishing on the Halifax River and the Atlantic Ocean can be customized for easy going trips or challenging

excursions. Fishing on the Intracoastal waterway is a trip everyone in the family will enjoy, but for more excitement try a deep sea charter for blue marlin and yellowfin tuna.

Sometimes a vacation’s defining moment of happiness makes you wish you could seal it in a bottle to

enjoy another time. On this trip you might bring a notebook to keep a journal of your experiences. Others take photos or use watercolor pencils to draw a scene. However you choose to record your memories, revisiting that peak moment will lift your spirits long after you’ve arrived home.

halifax historical museum

This local gem is located on Beach Street, Daytona Beach’s original commercial district on the mainland side of the Halifax River. It is worth the trip just to see the 1912 neoclassical architecture of its home, a former bank. A mural of Old Florida wildlife graces one wall, a stained-glass ceiling gives the place a sunlit glow, and a historic race car exhibit previews the racing season. The eclectic collection includes household items from the Spanish and British periods, plantation artifacts, tools, thousands of historic photographs and memorabilia of famous entrepreneurs and, naturally, model cars. Saturday kids are free. Gift shop admission is free.

shopping S

in the daytona beach area Shopping for trinkets or treasures is always satisfying in

the Daytona Beach area, especially if you’re browsing for gifts to take home. If you are in the mood for a makeover, shop for resort casual outfits that personify Daytona’s coastal lifestyle. Fashionistas establish the tropical look with a serene pallet of soft colors in natural blends that are supple and easy to wear. Sometimes tropical beaded jewelry and sandals make all the difference. Artsy Abode in the Volusia Mall achieves the Florida look with accessories like collectible jewelry, quilted handbags, and other accessories with pizzazz. In friendly seaside neighborhoods you’ll find beach gear, gifts, artsy clothing, whimsies and collectibles. Art galleries offer paintings that celebrate tranquil Florida landscapes and cutting edge works by emerging artists. And there’s always a cafe nearby where you can catch your breath and enjoy lunch. In historic downtown Daytona Beach, 1930s Art Deco and mid 20th Century buildings enhance your shopping “Window Shopping”

experience. Start with the shop offering decorator’s accent pieces

and seaside gifts. Take your time in the eclectic antique store that’s more like a mall, and don’t miss the shoe boutique or the fine jewelry store that has been fulfilling dreams since 1931.

As a reward, take a free guided tour at Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory, a city landmark since 1925, and

enjoy a scrumptious chocolate tasting afterward. If you love to shop for designer labels with bargain prices, the mall is just a short drive away.

Traveling in West Volusia, NEST is a store that sells re-purposed, painted furniture and local artwork in a

warehouse loft with an urban feel. Shop, enjoy the wine bar and sip artisan beer while you contemplate your purchase.

South in Daytona Beach Shores, Pearl’s International, family operated since 1967, can update your wardrobe

with a signature look using artfully designed pearls that go with any outfit, casual to cocktail.

Shopping is a wonderful way to take back memories, and if you find a special treasure, many shops will ship

it back home for you.

local dining

a world of dining choices T

Taste buds go on flavor patrol for cuisine that’s

beyond the ordinary when you are on vacation. Not necessarily for the exotic, but for gratifying food. And you want it served in friendly surroundings. Sometimes that’s a view of a marina, a lively street scene or breakers rolling on the beach. Dining options in the Daytona area include everything from candlelit tables in sophisticated settings to dockside grills where the ever popular fish sandwich is served in a basket. Even when dr , oysters and clams are as healthy as they are delicious. Southern cooking is always appreciated here and slow-cooked barbeque satisfies the appetites of almost everyone. But for a sense of adventure, dine in a restaurant offering cuisine with roots in “Lunch with the Girls”

Caribbean, Asian, Mediterranean, Spanish and

French cultures. Our skilled chefs take pride in using fresh vegetables, herbs and savory ingredients that transform a meal into a treasured vacation memory. A good dinner leaves one with a sense of comfort, especially after an active day filled with outdoor diversions. At night you may be inspired to take a leisurely walk on the boardwalk or the beach. A walk is a perfect excuse to have an ice cream cone, hand-dipped chocolate or a slice of key lime pie as the stars come out.

All Kinds of Crabs! Nocturnal ghost crabs and little mole crabs, sometimes called sand fleas, scurry around near the waves on Daytona beaches, amusing onlookers while hunting for food. Odd creatures called horseshoe crabs are old timers on our planet and look like ancient relics of the dinosaur era. Their tail isn’t a weapon! It’s used to help the crab flip itself over if it is rolled onto its back. They live in shallow coastal waters and winter in mud flats.

Climbing up 219 steps to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse is challenging, but the reward is the

panorama of the nation’s oldest port, Atlantic beaches and the azure coastal waterways that explain why yearround fishing is just minutes away.

Golfers can play courses designed by such world champions as Sam Sneed and Jack Nicklaus. The World

Golf Hall of Fame offers private tours of special collections and personal anecdotes of the Hall’s members.

While you’re here, take advantage of the 100 parks and preserves in the area. Peaceful natural areas protect

migrating birds, fish and wildlife and offer trails for hiking, bird watching, bicycling and kayaking. Miles of golden beaches offer surfing and many water sports on Anastasia Island and Ponte Vedra.

After dark, night spots come to life with an infusion of locals. If chilling tales of pirates lurking in taverns

and broken hearted lovers roaming halls at night won’t keep you awake, take a ghost tour…sweet dreams!

When you’ve seen the expanse of azure water that surrounds the area, you will understand why fishing is a year ‘round sport here. Saltwater and freshwater fishing are minutes from the historic district. Hang out at a local bait shop to soak up the local lore about “the big one that got away.”

Along the Matanzas River, family operated fishing resorts offer complete setups, renting pontoon boats and skiffs as well as tackle. Locals are eager to give tips on inshore saltwater fishing near feeder creeks and oyster bars where they catch black drum and mangrove snapper.

Romance Thrives in the Oldest City in America To capture the romance that has thrived in St. Augustine for 400 years is as easy as strolling together around the beautifully illuminated Spanish fort in the moonlight. Then follow the old walkway along the seawall, a path that follows in the footprints of many couples who found love and romance in St. Augustine. Get to know ancient Aviles Street at night with its brightly lit shops, pubs and a wine bar. Browse through bins for an art print, savor a cozy, late night supper or drop into a lively club. Even the locals bring their sweethearts downtown to the bayfront to take a horse-drawn carriage ride, a slow spin along narrow streets under the lamp light creates memories that last forever.

shopping

A

st. augustine area

An afternoon of shopping in the Old City makes you

feel like a time traveler, and even better, you have access to the latest trends in apparel, jewelry and chic accessories.

The historic district of St. Augustine is more like a

giant department store, only there are streets with shops instead of aisles. Wherever you ramble you’re never far from a café where you can relax and have lunch or a sweet dessert.

This is a remarkable place to shop for old maps,

French and English antiques, nautical artifacts, books, collectibles and vintage linens. Specialty shops also carry an excellent assortment of precious gem jewelry and distinctive home furnishings.

On St. George Street some old houses have quaint

second stories that extend out over the street. Now they are shops and restaurants, and it’s a pleasure to explore them because there’s no auto traffic on this pedestrian friendly street. The oldest locally owned clothing store, H.W. Davis Co., has been open since 1894. It offers select ladies’ and men’s sportswear, quality shoes and accessories with brand names you will recognize. “Early Morning Exercise”

Within walking distance are many galleries displaying

sculpture, photography, paintings celebrating sublime Florida landscapes and cutting edge works by emerging artists. And if you find a special purchase to remember your trip by, many of our shops will ship it home for you.

The oldest byway in the city, Aviles Street, is a treasure that inspired a sister city agreement to promote

cultural ties with Avila, Spain. Sidewalks have room for café tables and benches and a stroll down the newly renovated bricked street passes boutiques, art galleries, a wine bar and the Historical Library.

Beyond the city, the full spectrum of charming seaside boutiques is waiting to be discovered. The new

Island Beachwear store offers the latest fashions in swim suits, sun dresses and well known designer clothing for everyone in the family. The St. John’s Flea Market is a true, old fashioned open-air flea market where you never know when you will stumble upon a real treasure. For those who love to shop for designer labels at bargain prices, an upscale outlet mall is a short drive away.
