Sheryl discovered art early in life and it has been her passion ever since. Following a career in Graphic Design during the last 10 years she has had more time and freedom to explore, create and define her style. Whether painting “en plein air” or in the studio, her work revolves around colorful interpretations of life, nature, and all it has to offer. While always drawing, sketching, and exploring other mediums, Sheryl prefers painting with oil paint on linen or panels. And she is unabashedly hooked on color! Vibrant, thick, juicy brush strokes that sit up and demand attention. Her preferred style is painterly and impressionistic, usually painting alla prima – or in one sitting. With her husband Charlie, they own a local marina, Adventure Yacht Harbor and Boondocks Restaurant on the same property in Wilbur By The Sea. Boats, water and beaches have become recurring themes in her art, along with vacations painting waterfalls in North Carolina, the tropical scenes of The Bahama Islands, and a passion for gardening, flowers and the outdoor landscape. Sheryl is a member of several local and regional Art Associations, Plein-Air Groups and has participated in Plein-Air Paint-Outs around the country. Her paintings can be seen at Boondocks Restaurant in Wilbur By The Sea, in several Florida Galleries, as well as North Carolina, the Bahama Islands and online at sroachstudio.com.

Please enjoy this In-Room Concierge, but leave in the room. If you would like to purchase the book for $24.95, please inquire at the front desk.

Welcome to one of America’s favorite playgrounds, 23 miles of hard-packed golden sand beaches, and a destination known for motorsports and attractions for every age. Take a look through these pages at all there is to do and make this your best vacation yet.

memorabilia. For your entertainment, live music concerts and performing arts events occur throughout the year at local venues.

Inside this guide to Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach Shores, New Smyrna Beach, Ponce Inlet and beyond, we’ve included some suggestions for our favorite things to do at museums, historic landmarks and some places that you may not have heard about.

If you came to escape a hectic lifestyle, we can recommend Tomoka State Park where you can spot wild dolphins in the Intracoastal and Blue Spring State Park where gentle manatees gather in clear spring waters. Get in touch with nature and paddle a pristine creek or explore the ruins of an old British plantation surrounded by ancient oak trees for a nature-made escape.

After you work on your tan and relax around the pool, this could be the year you learn paddle boarding on calm waters, play golf on a championship course or take a cruise on the Intracoastal.

The first visitors came to watch auto and motorcycle races on the hard packed sand beach, but today we welcome one and all to leave your cares behind and enjoy all the entertaining diversions we offer.

We have museums with prehistoric animal skeletons, collections of surfing, art, photography and racing

THE HISTORY OF BEACH STREET DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA

In the early 1800s, sugar mill plantations, wild animals, snakes, gators and sand were the only things along the Halifax River. By1865, the area called Beach Street in Daytona Beach started collecting pioneers. The Halifax River was the place to settle. In 1870, Matthias Day arrived from Ohio with dreams of building a town. He laid out streets, Beach Street in particular, and the historic street was born. Thompson's home and store were built on Beach Street in 1870. The buildings still stand even though the store is now a home and the home is an office. Old wooden bridges only let horses walk across them. The first middle bridge, (ISB Bridge) was built of wood in late 1800s. It became "the concrete bridge" in 1912, and 1947 and the current four lane beauty was dedicated in 2001. In 1910, the Merchants Bank was built by Charles G. Burgoyne and others. Today, it houses the Halifax Historical Museum. Very little has changed on the outside with the exception of banners announcing the museum. 1925 brought filled in land on Beach Street with shrubbery, fountains and monuments. The gracious Veterans Memorial in Riverfront Park was built in 1938 and graced the park until 1962 when the City of Daytona Beach moved it to Tuscawilla Park on Nova Road. The lawn is now used for outdoor movies and Beach Street events. Change is always inevitable and yet, it’s wonderful to be able to see the past, as well as the future. The shopping scene in the Daytona Beach area is bursting with choices for those who love to shop. Friendly seaside neighborhoods in the Daytona area offer the latest in swimwear and casual clothing in soft hues of sea and sky. If you’re like most visitors, you’ll quickly slip into the mood for a tropical makeover with cool, supple fabrics that are the base of our coastal lifestyle. You’ll feel like a fashionista in a new pair of sandals that sparkle or a hat that spells mystery while it shades your face. Many boutiques offer fashionable accessories for that finished look including one-of-a-kind jewelry, belts and cover-ups. Whether you are looking for a gift or something special that reminds you of your trip, it’s always fun to browse galleries stocked with original paintings and photography that celebrate the Florida landscape. Handcrafted souvenirs in glass and ceramics make perfect gifts for friends as well as your home. Strolling along the palm-lined streets in Historic Downtown Daytona Beach, you’ll find several specialty shops. Visit the Halifax Museum located in an Art Deco Building that’s 125 years old and relax with a snack at a restaurant with outside tables. On Saturdays locals and visitors drop by the farmer’s market on City Island for the wide choices of goods and foods. Everyone will enjoy the free guided tour at Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory, a downtown landmark since 1925. Afterward, sink your teeth into creamy chocolates, munch chocolate covered potato chips and sip gourmet coffee.

daytrip

Take a short drive, soak up some sun & local history.

DON’T MISS A THING! Explore... beyond the beach!

around the daytona beach area

Y

You are currently in the Daytona Beach area, a most

beautiful destination, plus only a short drive to some local gems and beautiful cities. On the following pages are delightful day trips you won’t want to miss. DeLand for its colorful history, as seen inside and out

on a tour at Stetson Mansion (a TripAdvisor favorite) or by visiting the famous Cassadaga, to get your palm read by an in-residence spiritualist. Check out the Artist Murals that cover the city in little hideaway places and get your photo taken with the ever-popular DeLand Wings. See page 27. Visitors Center: 386-734-0162 Flagler Beach is north between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. The A1A Scenic Highway drive will simply take your breath away. The Fairchild Oak, one of the largest live Oak trees in the South, is hidden in an old hammock and is truly a site to behold. Enjoy lunch at the old Flagler Pier and then maybe hike some trails at the Washington Oaks Park. See page 28. Visitors Center: 386-313-4230 New Smyrna Beach is half an hour south. Quaint, artsy, laid back. If you are lucky, be sure to catch a Saturday Night stock car race at the New Smyrna Speedway. Take your dog to Smyrna Dunes Park to swim. Only a few places allow this, and your fur friend will have a ball. See page 29. Visitors Center: 386-428-1600 St. Augustine is an hour north. Truly special, it is the oldest continuously occupied city in the US. The bricks, the buildings, the statues will all take you back in time. Flagler College Tours showcase days gone by. Churches with fascinating histories are on many corners of this old city. Shopping on Aviles St. and St. George St., you are sure to find quality souvenirs to bring home. See page 30 & 31. Certified Mediums and Healers are available daily. 1112 Stevens St., Cassadaga, FL., 386-228-3171.

DeLand Wings One of DeLand's most photographed locations is located in an alley in the 100 block of S. Woodland Blvd. What started off as an impulsive chalk drawing by artist Erica Group, is now a beautiful painting of a set of angel wings. Look for the wings, take a selfie & post your pic on facebook or Instagram with the hashtag #DelandWings.

Murals of DeLand Take a step back in time and go on a historical tour, a Mural walk if you will, down the streets of Historic DeLand. See memories of the city's past painted on the walls (15 in total)- each one tells a different story. You can download a Mural Walk brochure, with a map showing the location of each work of art. www.MainstreetDeland.org

Old Spanish Sugar Mill & Griddle House A fun, unique restaurant located in Deleon Springs State Park, inside a restored Sugar Mill. Beaches, fishing, shops, restaurants, natural parks and other wonders

A1A Scenic Highway Take a scenic road trip on this mostly two-lane, north-south roadway that runs 72 miles along the most eastern border of the state. Get amazingly close views of white sandy beaches since, in many places, the highway runs directly along the waterfront of the Atlantic Ocean. www.ScenicA1A.org

Bulow Plantation Ruins and Fairchild Oak This 150-acre park contains the ruins of an 1800s sugar and cotton plantation. It is home to the more than 800 year-old live “Fairchild Oak” which has withstood Seminole Indian wars, developers and fires. Today, you can take a scenic walk to visit the ruins, picnic and there is a boat ramp to fish. Launch a canoe or small powerboats to enjoy the scenic Bulow Creek. a world of dining choices If you’re ready for a restaurant that’s a vacationworthy upgrade, pick one with an all-weather deck overlooking a marina or a stretch of sunkissed beach. Fresh Atlantic seafood served broiled, blackened, baked or grilled is always a good choice. For the ultimate in relaxation you can always dine casually at a wide variety of restaurants.
