GUIDE

america’s beach

Long before SEE Daytona Beach Insider’s Guide’s 50th year in circulation we had the indigenous Timucuan Indians, before the British ruled, then the Spanish. The railways arrived and were purchased by Henry M. Flagler. By the 1920s we were dubbed “The World’s Most Famous Beach” after automobile and motorcycle racing found our compacted sand in 1902. In 1967 baby boomer sun worshippers and families were enjoying their spring break and reading our first issue. Today we thank our followers for being a loyal audience! This guide to the Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach and Ponce Inlet area will provide you with fresh ideas of what to see and do. We welcome one and all to our friendly coast. Our wide range of activities and events proves why over 9 million people visit each year.

gracious and stately plantations once stood, not everything you do needs to be expensive. The Daytona International Speedway is the world’s only motorsports stadium offering daily track tours, year-round. Learn the history of the “World Center of Racing,” see the 31-degree high banks, visit Gatorade Victory Lane and have your picture taken with the DAYTONA 500 champion car. Cap off your tour by exploring the recently relocated Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. The Daytona Beach area’s formula for the classic unwind has always been simple for more than 50 years: grab a towel, stretch out on the warm, golden sand and breathe in the salty tang of the sea. Then head for the surf and stroll barefoot down the shoreline until the ocean lulls you into a far-from-home magical mood.

So that you won’t miss what’s new, look for this symbol throughout this guide. Check out our Extras pages for side trips to local landmarks and scenic parks where

ACTIVITIES

getting the most out of your vacation

Family attractions designed to amuse all ages include the Stingray Touch Pool at the Marine Science Center where you can reach out and touch three types of rays (it’s okay, their stingers have been removed), or swim with the dolphins at the famous historic Marineland just a few miles north on A1A.

Daytona Beach is a top destination for golfers seeking championship courses. Most are within minutes of the beach, including the top-rated links at the LPGA International and courses designed by legends of the game. And their pro shops offer golf workshops at all levels.

Capt. Johnny Long's Old Fashioned Airboat Rides now private 2 hour tours for has trips every evening, up to 6 adults. Just their group & the captain. A real deal. When you’re ready to relax, take a ride on the

Not far from the beach, you can ramble through forests of tall pines or swim in a natural spring. Whether you’re here on a golf outing or just trying to relax, lighten up, forget your techno-driven world and bike along the beach or the quiet shady roads on the Ormond Beach Scenic Loop. Life is good here in sunny Florida.

My first ride on an airboat was an unexpected adventure with a very knowledgeable guide. I had no idea the giant propeller was so noisy, but with the noise canceling headsets, I was transported into another world.

DAYTONA BEACH Ormond Beach south to New Smyrna Beach

A fun, noisy and educational experience!

We glided with exhilarating speed into the backwaters of the marsh! From the unique perspective of my seat, I had the opportunity to see many species of birds, including large blue herons and majestic bald eagles. Not only were there alligators basking in the sun, but I even saw a cow or two! Imagine that.

SHOPPING

a shopper’s dream

In some ways shopping while on vacation is like a mini adventure, full of surprises every time you open a door or catch a glint of something sparkling through a window. When buying gifts, you may find a special purchase that will become a warm-hearted vacation memory. Friendly coastal neighborhoods have revelations on every block. Tucked along the way are artsy shops displaying paintings, photographs and other treasures for you to take home. This is the time for some shopping in Daytona Beach. We have a Tanger Outlets Daytona Beach, where you can shop in over 75 new brand name and designer outlet stores. For incredible savings, this is a “must do” for your shopping experience. And there is also a PANDORA Store at the Volusia Mall. This is the place to find the newest styles and collections of charms, rings, bracelets and more. For gifts that are both personal and

precious, choose PANDORA. Plus, there’s a Old Time Pottery on International Speedway Blvd., with ever-changing selections of unique items and gifts. If you want to get lost for a few hours, shopping the huge selections in any one of these places is where you’ll want to go. When you're in a tropical mood and ready for a change, resort wear is our specialty. Choose fabrics that are cool, softly comfortable and all about ease. Silky, shimmering blends in a subtle palate of colors are flattering at night and enhance your tan! People love to stroll under the palm trees in Historic downtown Daytona Beach where decorative wroughtiron archways add character to art deco and neoclassical architecture. The Riverfront Shops offer antiques, home furnishings and collectibles, art galleries, jewelry, clothiers and several nice cafes where people congregate.

DINING

a world of dining choices

If your taste buds crave adventure, we have chefs who specialize in Caribbean, Asian, Mediterranean, Spanish and French cuisine. They take pride in using herbs as well as fresh Florida fruits and vegetables that can transform a meal into an unforgettable memory. Dining out can be the best part of your vacation, especially when the meal is served outdoors on a balmy evening. Florida fish, broiled, blackened or sautéed, and fresh caught shrimp, oysters and clams are as healthy as they are delicious. There’s a scrumptious selection, from a late night supper of grilled grouper, paired with sparkling wine, to a basket of crispy, coconut shrimp served on a deck and washed down with a frosty mug of draft beer. Need Catering? Hog Heaven on A1A next to the Ocean service Center has you covered, large or small. Their

will delight any family or group gathering. Call them and they will “Put Some South In Your Mouth!” This SEE Daytona Beach Insider’s Guide is a great source for the best values and places to eat, even when dressing for dinner requires nothing more formal than shorts and sandals. Plus if you have a fussy, particular or “special” eater, our “Dining Guide” will help you find the flavor that fits for Gluten Free, Heart Healthy and Vegetarian needs. Whether you eat at a sidewalk café downtown or on a deck overlooking a sleepy river, our restaurants have menus that are designed to please you. When the stars come out, you may be inspired to take a leisurely walk on the boardwalk or the beach. That’s a perfect excuse to have an ice cream cone, hand-dipped chocolates or a slice of key lime pie.

Beach Bonfires All it takes is a permit, some dry wood and starter kindling. And don’t forget a good lighter. In some locations, there are beach fire pits you can use. Bonfires are permitted from November 1 to April 30 when turtles are not making nests. In summer months, lights on the beach are banned, because they would disorient females trying to lay eggs and confuse hatchlings scurrying toward the safety of the sea.

Call First for a Permit

Volusia County: For locations and reservations, visit Volusia.org then Beach Safety, Bonfires or call 326-239-6414, ex. 230. Flagler County: 386-517-2010

When the weather is cool, there’s nothing like a seaside bonfire to warm the night air. Add some drums, the mellow tones of a flute or guitars, and you have the makings of a therapeutic night under the stars.

5 Servings of Florida’s Fabulous Seafood Blessed by a coastline extending more than 1,300 miles, Florida’s chefs have taken full advantage of the bounty of the waters. No visit to the Sunshine State would be complete without sampling some of the seafood dishes found on most menus. Here are a few to tempt you.

1 Conch: pronounced “konk.” These chewy mollusks are served tenderized with lime juice, raw and chopped in salad. Also chopped, breaded and fried as conch fritters and in conch chowder (usually red, spicy).

ahi (or Mahi Mahi): the correct name is dolphin (not the mammal). Firm, white-fleshed and delicious grilled, 2 M blackened or Cajun-style.

3 Grouper: one of the mildest fishes available, served fried, blackened, broiled or grilled as an entrée, but a fried grouper sandwich is hard to beat.

4 Yellowfin tuna: a firm, flavorful semi-dark meat fish most often grilled, broiled or blackened. lorida lobster: known as spiny lobster, has no claws like Maine lobster. Florida lobster tails 5 Fare broiled and served with melted butter. Absolutely delicious!

Bike Week has rocketed to fame from its humble beginnings on the beach in 1937.

The first motorcycle racecourse was 3.2 miles on hard-packed sand and public roadways with sand-banked turns. That year the winner of the first Daytona 200 averaged 73 mph. After World War II, the nation’s interest in motorcycles expanded. A new beach-road course was lengthened to 4.1 miles. The race moved to the Daytona International Speedway in 1961. During the next two decades, crowds unofficially topped 50,000. But by the 1980s Bike Week was better known for raucous crowds than races. Chamber president George Mirabal and beachside businessman Alan Robertson put together a plan in 1998 that successfully discouraged the troublemakers and welcomed biker fans, which then numbered about 90,000. Today the chrome plated machines are recognized as much for their gleaming beauty as their speed. Hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts come to show off their bikes and enjoy the races, street festivals and rallies.

The photos on this page and cover were taken by local award winning photographer, Tony Giese. They capture the glitzy chrome and iridescent colors of bikes today.
