The Origin of Father’s Day

ne Sunday in 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd listened to a sermon honoring mothers. Her mother had died some years before, so her father had raised her by himself. Dodd wondered why there wasn’t a day to honor fathers, so she arranged a tribute to her father at a church in Spokane, Washington. The date was June 19, 1910. Many people believe this was the beginning of Father’s Day. Another account holds that a West Virginia church held a tribute service for fathers in 1908, following a mine explosion that killed 360 men. Regardless of which story is correct, President Calvin Coolidge was the first president to designate a special day to honor fathers. In 1924, he proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Whatever you find to be true in your instance of celebrating father’s day, remember that no one can celebrate your Father like you.

Farewell Address to the Parish Congregants of Second Baptist Church Sons and Daughter of Christ Jesus, God’s Grace to You! It was difficult for me when I heard the voice of the Lord inwardly leading me to the decision to retire from the Under-Shepherding position of Second Baptist Church. Even so, there are times when a person, a family, or a group of people must experience a new dimension in living as the Lord directs (Proverbs 3:5, 6). I thought of the years of my divine call to enter the Christian Gospel Ministry on February 18, 1957, and the three parish churches that I have been privileged to serve as Under-Shepherd: Faith Mission Church, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, from 1958 to 1959; Delmann Heights Church, San Bernardino, California, from 1963 to 1969, and Saint Timothy Community Church, Rialto, California, from July 4, 1970 to September, 1973. My divine direction was to come to Second Baptist Church. I served as Co-Under-Shepherd, beginning on January 1, 1974 until April 1, 1974, when I became Senior Under-Shepherd. The journey has been a learning and growing experience for me. I thought about my physical birth in Suffolk, Virginia, and the years there until the age of eight, in 1944, when I was sent to Brooklyn, New York; and from there, to the United States Air Force in 1954. I could not have known that God was preparing me to follow in the footsteps of at least two great clergymen, colleagues; the first Under-Shepherd, Army Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Allen Allensworth and the Pastor George Godfrey Bailey. After much prayer, I have made the decision to submit my resignation as Under-Shepherd of Second Baptist Church, effective May 19, 2019, at the close of the morning worship assembly. Lady Betty G. “Apple Blossom” and I felt the Lord leading in my life’s journey in this respect. Even though we look forward to a new challenge in retirement, it saddens us to know that we will be leaving the UnderShepherding fellowship of dear friends in the congregation for the past generation and a half. We love you and have appreciated your faithfulness to us and the parish church. You have been overwhelmingly generous to Lady Betty, our children, and to me. I pray that you will respond in the same manner to Pastor Christopher and Lady Heather Bourne, and the children. My heartfelt thanks to the Joint Board, the Associate Elders, my Administrative Assistant and staff, and to you, the parish congregants. May the Good Lord rest upon you continually as you follow His blessed Word in belief, deed and action. Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully, Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Retired Parish Under-Shepherd

The Last Man Standing! A Powerful Leader of the Black Panthers Party

E

lmer “Geronimo” Pratt was born on September 13, 1947, and died on June 2, 2011. Mr. Pratt is best known for his work as a human rights activist for the Black Panther Party.

In 1972, he was convicted of murder and served twenty-seven years in prison, eight in solitary confinement. Mr. Pratt was released from jail on June 10, 1997. But before going to jail, he served two tours in Vietnam, and was a decorated military veteran. After leaving the military, Pratt attended UCLA where he studied Political Science. His military background was useful to the BBP organization where he earned the position of Deputy Minister of Defense. After gaining this title, he became a target of the FBI due to his influence and powerful speeches against police brutality against young Black men. An FBI informant was hired to neutralize his service in the BBP. Thus, the charge of murder was rendered against him. His attorney was the late Johnnie Cochran. Geronimo Pratt died in his adopted country, Tanzania, Africa. His legacy in the Black Panther Organization will be remembered for generations to come. But for some, he is best known as the godfather of the late Tupac Shakur, if nothing else.

Happy Father’s Day to All Fathers!

uring the month of May, many wonderful events took place on the campus of Second Baptist Church. For one, we were grateful to have had Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard as UnderShepherd of SBC, Monrovia, California for 45 glorious years! Now Second Baptist Church of Monrovia has a new leader, Pastor Christopher A. Bourne, and a new first family, with new things to look forward to. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” This is easy to do when the Lord has guided your life, for all of your life! But for those who are still looking for this world to solve their problems, we, as believers, still have to be the light that directs them to Jesus. What I know for sure is, in this world there will always be some kind of issue to resolve; and what we, as believers have to do is to pray, seek the Lord’s guidance, and follow up with some action. I hope that we, (including me as a young senior) can enjoy the fruits of our labor and keep Yahweh with us everywhere we go and in everything we do, because He sees everything and knows all that we do. I will leave you with this. Proverbs 4:23 tells us, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it springs the issues of life.” God Bless You All! Peggy LaBon

Using her infectious rap skills and personality, she accomplished an impressive 11-song release cycle in 2018 that featured a mix of features and original songs, earning her a Rapzilla.com Freshman nod for 2018, and launching her rap career. The momentum culminated in her being offered a recording contract offer from Reach Records where she worked as an A&R administrator and would become the first woman artist in the label’s 16 year legacy. “It was fulfilling knowing my work didn’t go unnoticed, given how much effort I put in,” said Wande.

“Do” diligence Against the backdrop of people who avoid work, cut corners and do half-hearted jobs, a diligent [person] stands out. Practicing diligence is an excellent way to stand out for Christ at home, in the workplace and even at church. Today, complete each one of your tasks, however big or small, with diligence. —David Jeremiah

f you take better care of your car or your favorite gadget than your body, you are not alone. Getting the right screening test at the right time is one of the most important things a man can do for his health, because screenings find diseases early before symptoms appear, when they are easier to treat.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men face higher rates of alcohol related deaths and hospitalizations than women. Alcohol increases the risk for cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver and colon. Alcohol also interferes with testicular function and hormone production which can result in impotence and infertility. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in American men after skin cancer. Screening tests can find the disease early, sometimes before symptoms develop. Testicular cancer develops in men reproductive glands which produce sperm. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of death. Men have a higher risk of developing it than women. The majority of colon cancers slowly develop from colon polyps. The way to prevent colon cancer is to find and remove polyps before they turn cancerous. The risk of high blood pressure increases with age. It is also related to weight and lifestyle. With treatment, you may reduce your risk for heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. A high level of LDL (low-density lipoproteins) cholesterol in the blood causes sticky plaque to build up in the walls of the arteries, increasing your risk of heart disease. Lifestyle changes and medication can reduce the “bad” cholesterol and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

One-third of Americans with diabetes don’t know they have it; and uncontrolled diabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and blindness from damage to the blood vessels of the retina, nerve damage, and impotence. When found early, diabetes can be controlled and complications can be avoided with diet, exercise, weight loss and medications. Eye disease can gradually damage the optic nerve and may lead to blindness, and significant irreversible vision loss can occur before people with glaucoma even notice any symptoms. Screening tests look for abnormal high pressure within the eye, to catch and treat the condition before damage to the optic nerve. “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body” (Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT). Now that you know about some of the health risks that affect men, the next step is to change your habits and become proactive about your health. Addressing your health can be scary, but avoiding it altogether can be deadly. Visit your medical provider to learn how you can reduce your risk of common conditions facing men. Movie Pick of the Month Miracle from Heaven A Father’s Day Movie Review

Like Arrows

While checking out Netflix, looking for something to review for June’s Newsletter, I stumble across “Like Arrows.” The title alone caught my attention, so I decided to watch this movie to see if it was something that I would recommend for general viewing. I give this movie a Two-Thumbs Up! I must admit, it is a slow start! But once you past the first fifteen minutes, you will be stuck until the end. It is a movie that test parenting skills, especially for fathers. The movie was released in 2018, but I had never heard of it. The title does not suggest anything about God, but it is all about God and how this family raised their children to trust and depend on Him in every aspect of their life. Fathers, you will enjoy this movie, “Like Arrows.” Look for it on Netflix! “Happy Father’s Day” Enjoy Your Day!
