E lmer “Geronimo” Pratt was born on September 13, 1947, and died on June 2, 2011. Mr. Pratt is best known for his work as a human rights activist for the Black Panther Party.

In 1972, he was convicted of murder and served twenty-seven years in prison, eight in solitary confinement. Mr. Pratt was released from jail on June 10, 1997. But before going to jail, he served two tours in Vietnam, and was a decorated military veteran.

After leaving the military, Pratt attended UCLA where he studied Political Science. His military background was useful to the BBP organization where he earned the position of Deputy Minister of Defense. After gaining this title, he became a target of the FBI due to his influence and powerful speeches against police brutality against young Black men. An FBI informant was hired to neutralize his service in the BBP. Thus, the charge of murder was rendered against him. His attorney was the late Johnnie Cochran.

Geronimo Pratt died in his adopted country, Tanzania, Africa. His legacy in the Black Panther Organization will be remembered for generations to come. But for some, he is best known as the godfather of the late Tupac Shakur, if nothing else.
