I

am very grateful to be a part of this magazine that has enriched my life and keeps me connected to Second Baptist Church, where I rededicated my life to Christ in 1994.

When I was first approached to contribute to this “new idea” being formed by our founder Diakona Nadine Harris, I could not imagine having anything to contribute that people would want to read. Not to mention being a writer. Me? All I can say is, “10 years later… be careful how you limit yourself!” Our Founder had a vision to equip the congregation, family and friends with encouraging stories and accomplishments of the youths, as well as the seniors; to communicate events and church outings, birthdays, etc., and this vision has come to fruition; and now 10 years strong! We know from working in ministry that creating something new and different is not always easy. However, the Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 9:11, “I returned and saw under the sun that - the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to men of understanding, nor favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.” Therefore, I say, thank you Lord! In preparing for this 10th Anniversary of Second’s Gazette, I want to congratulate the Founder and Staff on a job well done! May the Lord continue to use you to be a blessing for His people! In Christ.

The Triad of Humanity’s Nature! (John 4:24)

Sons and Daughters of Christ Jesus, God’s Grace to You!

T

he clear and understood message given by Jesus in the Gospel of John 4:24 resonate with us. “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” This passage describes God’s nature as Tri-unity, “must worship in spirit and truth.”

The original spelling of the English word “worship” was spelled “worth-ship,” and it means to acknowledge the worth of the object worshiped. We should acknowledge God’s worth in spirit (in contrast to material ways) and in truth (in contrast to falsehood) in worship. The Samaritans also believed in a coming Messiah. The Lord had a conversation with a Samaritan woman at the well in Jerusalem City, Israel. His main theme is vitally important to us. Therefore, from the Under-Shepherd call to worship to the benediction pronouncing God’s blessings upon each soul as you go is vital. The Saints should find themselves worshiping God as He instructed us whenever we worship: “In Spirit” is (Faith); “In Truth” is (According to His Word). Here is what the Holy Spirit does within us. He works continuously in each of the three parts of our nature: Body, Soul, and Spirit and brings them into an ever-increasing unity during sanctuary worship. There are two uses for the Greek word Spirit in this passage. The one referring to God is Pneuma, and the word for the Spirit of a person is Pneumati. Our spirit is the God intended contact point with Him. He created us for fellowship with Him. Since He is Spirit, He has made us capable of knowing Him, experiencing His love, and enjoying a faithful friendship with Him. Our spirit was meant to be His home. The impact of Jesus’ Life, Death, Resurrection, and Return in the Holy Spirit fulfills God’s original intention of creating a people to be His people. The Lord’s persistent prayer was “not My will, but Yours be done” and affirms those whose will is to do His will. Amen! Until He Comes, I Am Serving Christ Joyfully,

Bishop Dr. Wm. LaRue Dillard Parish Under-Shepherd

Peggy, Thank you for such beautiful words this month. The article is right on time for our celebration this month, thus, it moves to the editor’s page. I couldn’t have said it better. It is always a treat to read your article. Your thoughtfulness will never be forgotten. It is easy to see why God created you for His family. Thanks for hanging in for 10 years, I didn’t think the newsletter would be around this long, but, to God be the Glory and thank you Bishop Dillard for allowing us to enjoy what we are doing for our church family while growing our relationship with God. Your Sister in Christ! Diakona Nadine Harris

The Resurrection of Jesus the Christ

J

esus rose on the Third day with “All power on Earth and in Heaven” in His hands. The power given to our Lord and Savior was the power of Omnipotent, meaning that the Lord God is all-powerful. Job 27:23 NIV states, “The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power; in his justice and great righteousness, he does not oppress.”

The Lord God is Omnipresent, meaning that He is everywhere! Jeremiah 23:23-24 NIV says, “Can a man hide himself in hiding places so I can not see him?” declares the Lord. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the Lord. “Am I a God who is near,” declares the Lord, “And not a God far off?” Our Lord God is Omniscience, meaning that God knows everything. “For the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought” (I Chronicles 28:9 b NIV).

Happy Resurrection!

fter returning home from covering the war in Afghanistan, journalist Paul Asher, is now covering some of the best stories in his young career. However, Paul is dealing with some of the after effects of his war experience; a failing marriage, and his dying faith. Paul prays to God, but his prayers, to him, seem to go unanswered until one day he get a message to interview a man for the story of a lifetime. The mysterious man claims to be God. What will this inquisitive reporter ask God? What would you ask God? This movie was released in August, 2018 and is now available on Netflix. It is engaging, and holds your attention. RESURRECTION DEFINITIONS Bible Quiz

After Jesus raises Lazarus from death, what does his family do to thank Jesus? A. They host a dinner for him. B. Martha serves the meal. C. Mary anoints Jesus’ feet with an extravagant amount of expensive perfume. D. All of the above.

As Mary anointed your feet with perfume, Jesus, may my life pour out love for you by the love I show my neighbors. Amen. *** [Palm Sunday] We hold in tension the emotions of this day: the joy of the exuberant crowd welcoming Jesus, and the scorn of those so threatened by him as to seek his death. Lord, have mercy. *** [Maundy Thursday] The bread of life; the cup of salvation: May you “taste and see that the LORD is good” (Psalm 34:8, NIV). *** [Good Friday] When Jesus said, “It is finished,” he meant not only his agony on the cross but the achievement of our salvation: Once, for all, it was done. *** “Early hasten to the tomb ... all is solitude and gloom.” Then — suddenly! — “Christ is ris’n! He meets our eyes. Savior, teach us so to rise.” (“Go to Dark Gethsemane”)

“Forgiveness is the well from which we draw the water to wash others’ feet.” —D. Siler

The Magnitude of God’s Love It would be spectacular and amazing ... if some king’s son were to appear in a beggar’s home to nurse him in his illness, wash off his filth and do everything else the beggar would have to do. Would this not be a profound humility? Any spectator or any beneficiary of this honor would feel impelled to admit that he had seen or experienced something unusual and extraordinary, something magnificent. And yet the love of the Son of God for us is of such magnitude that the greater the filth and stench of our sins, the more he befriends us, the more he cleanses us, relieving us of all our misery and of the burden of all our sins and placing them upon his own back. Whenever the devil declares: “You are a sinner!” Christ interposes: “I will reverse the order; I will be a sinner, and you are to go scotfree.” Who can thank our God enough for this mercy? —Martin Luther, Luther’s Works 22, 166-167

Meanings in the Meal

Fifth Sunday in Lent, April 7, 2019 Holy Week, April 14-21, 2019 Palm/Passion Sunday, April 14, 2019 Maundy Thursday, April 18, 2019 Good Friday, April 19, 2019 Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019 Administrative Professionals Day, April 24, 2019

Jesus instituted Communion while celebrating the Jewish Passover with his disciples. The meal’s ritual foods hold meaning for Christians, too, because our faith story is interwoven with that of Judaism. Matzoh: This unraised bread recalls the Israelites’ hasty departure from oppression in Egypt. Jesus used the Passover bread to symbolize his body, which delivers us from bondage to sin and death. Salt water: It symbolizes the tears of the Hebrews and of all who suffer in any time and place. Christians believe that in Jesus, God embraced human suffering so we need never face it alone. Parsley: Dipped in the salt water, this green, leafy vegetable represents the Hebrews’ rebirth out of sorrow into the joy of freedom. Easter’s celebration of resurrection proclaims a coming day when God “will wipe every tear from [our] eyes [and] there will be no more death” (Revelation 21:4, NIV). Shankbone: A lamb slaughtered for each Hebrew household meant life for those within. The meat strengthened them for the escape journey, and the blood, swabbed on their doorframe, signaled for Death to “pass over.” Jesus used wine at the Passover meal to symbolize his blood — of the Lamb of God — which he would shed for our salvation. Egg: For Jews celebrating Passover, an egg symbolizes memory of the Exodus and renewal of faith. For Christians at Easter, eggs — especially open, empty ones — call to mind Jesus’ empty tomb, renewal and abundant life.

“Living Donations, a Living Gift! Have you ever thought about giving someone a part of your body while you are still alive? It is now possible with a Living Donation. While the majority of organ donations occur after a donor has died, living donations can now be made with certain organs and tissues, enabling doctors to save more people in desperate need of a transplant. Living kidney and liver donations can range from family members and friends, to anonymous individuals, if they meet the requirements to donate. Also, in rare cases, a segment of other organs can be transplanted from a living donor. In fact, since 1998, over 700,000 transplants have been made from living donors, and one in four of these donors were not biologically related to the recipient (American Transplant Foundation, 2018). Living donors should be in overall good physical and mental health, and older than 18 years of age. In most cases, donors should not have high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, or heart disease. It is important to share all information about ones physical and mental health before becoming a living donor to fully informed recipients of any known risks involved with donating; and a full medical and psychosocial evaluation must be performed. The informed consent process should help one to understand all aspects of the donation process, including risks and benefits. The decision to donate should be completely voluntary and free of pressure or guilt. The initial screening is typically followed by a blood test to see if you are compatible with the intended transplant candidate. If you are not compatible with the person, you may have other options to donate. These options include paired exchange, blood type incompatible, or positive cross match donation. If you are considering being a living organ donor, it is important to educate yourself about the donation process, required testing, financial considerations, risks and recovery.

17

In a non-directed donation, the living donor is not related to or known by the recipient, but makes his or her donation purely out of selfless motives. The match is arranged based on medical compatibility with a patient in need. If you would like to be a non-directed living donor, visit the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) website. You can also contact United Network for Organ Sharing patient services at 1-888-894-6361 or patientservices@unos.org. Bone marrow transplant is a life-saving treatment for people with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma and other diseases like sickle cell anemia. First, patients undergo chemotherapy and sometimes radiation to destroy the diseased marrow. Then a donor's healthy blood-forming cells are injected directly into the patient's bloodstream where they begin to function and multiply. For a patient's body to accept these healthy cells, the patient needs a donor who is a close match. Seventy percent of patients do not have a donor in their family, and getting a match depends on the finding an unrelated donor. Racial and ethnic heritage are very important factors. Because tissue types are inherited, patients are more likely to match with someone of their own race or ethnicity. Today, there are not enough registered marrow donors of diverse and ethnic heritage. The likelihood of finding a matched adult by patient ethnicity are: African American or Black 23%, Asian or Pacific Islander 41%, Hispanic or Latino 46%, American Indian or Alaska Native 57% and White 77%. If you are between the ages of 18 and 44, patients especially need you. Doctors choose donors based on what is best for their patients. Research shows that cells from younger donors lead to more successful transplants. You can become a donor if you are between the ages of 18 and 60, if you meet health guidelines, and are willing to donate to any patient in need. The Be The Match at City of Hope, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program, finds bone marrow and stem cell transplants for patients in need. Joining the registry is simple. Members complete a registration form, swab the inside of their mouth and stay committed to the mission of saving lives through marrow transplants. There is no registration fee. To join the Be The Match, please contact the City of Hope Be The Match office within the Michael Amini Transfusion Medicine Center at 626-218-8483.

ANTHROPOLOGY: The Bible claims that all humans are “one blood” descended from one man and one woman (Acts 17:26; 1 Corinthians 15:45; Genesis 3:20). Some nineteenthcentury biologists argued that different races descended from lower animals, but today genetics has verified that there is only one human race.

LOL Billy had been misbehaving and was sent to his room. After a while he emerged and informed his mother that he had thought it over and then said a prayer. "Fine", said the pleased mother. "If you ask God to help you not misbehave, He will help you." "Oh, I didn't ask Him to help me not misbehave," said Johnny. "I asked Him to help you put up with me."

1K Phew is among a new breed of Atlanta artists taking the trap sensibility and elevating it to great effect. His smooth delivery and evocative vocal tone pair well with the bouncy, energetic productiothat defines his sound. At just 23 years old, Phew’s rise from local rapper with swagger to compelling artist equipped with a message, has been refreshing to watch. He’s fun and engaging, no doubt, but he’s so much more. As evidenced by his mixtapes Sunday Night (2015) and Life (2016), Phew’s got plenty of swag and wisdom to impart, and people are beginning to connect with his candid approach. But even though Phew had it better than some of his peers, having grown up with two praying parents who encouraged him in his gifting, he still found himself going down a destructive path as a teen. It wasn’t until he and his friends almost got shot one day that Phew decided to truly surrender his life to God and His plan. “That was a turning point for me. From then on, I was different.” http://reachrecords.com/artists/1k-phew/
