Cape Cod Style with a West Coast Twist
W
hen touring Salt Spring Island you might expect to see traditional West Coast style homes nestled in the tall trees, but if you travel to Parminter Point, a different kind of home stands out.
“It’s more like a New England cottage,” says Anne Green, who lives part-time in the home with her husband, David. They have christened the house “Small Point,” as it sits on the smallest of three points. The Greens purchased the property in 1997 and built their home the following year. They chose Salt Spring because of its proximity to Vancouver Island, where their sons were attending boarding school. In 2002 they doubled the size of the home to 3,000 square feet by building an addition. The newer space consists of an office and guest area, including its own kitchenette. While the indoors of the original home and the addition are very similar, the outside is quite different. “We wanted it to look like two separate houses, even though they are attached,” says Anne.
Classic Coastal Living The original house is covered in white horizontal boards, while the addition is natural grey shingles with white trim, but the inside of the luxurious home flows naturally from the original structure to the addition. Old growth fir flooring, taken from an old airport roof hangar, spans the house, including the kitchen and main living area. The recently expanded and renovated kitchen has become the entertainment centre of the home. “My wife loves the kitchen,” says David. “We have lovely marble counters and she really likes that a lot.” The Greens love the functionality of the kitchen. Vast amounts of counter space, including a large peninsula, ensure the couple has a lot of room to work. They also have an open shelf pantry area. The Bianca Carrara marble counter tops are nicely coordinated with large white cabinets, and the Miele appliances are also finished with the same painted white finishes found on the cabinets. Anne’s favourite feature in the kitchen is the L-shaped window above the sink. “I can see out the window and see the tide coming in and out,” says Anne. Small Point is surrounded by water.

Mixing Old and New
H
ome renovations can be daunting, but Anne and David Green were in good hands when they decided to fully renovate their kitchen and bathroom. Vivienne and Jeff Scott, owners of Cabinet Works in Sidney, worked tirelessly to make the Greens’ dream kitchen and bathrooms a reality. “We literally sat down with them and pored over designs,� says Vivienne. The original kitchen design for the Salt Spring home was drawn by Hodgson Design Associates in Vancouver and, after the plans were finalized, the Cabinet Works team got to work. But, as with any home renovation, there were challenges, especially in the kitchen. “Once the renovation got going we realized the plan needed to be modified,� says Jeff. “We had to modify cabinets in order to accommodate pipes and walls and I had to really custom fit the appliances.� Once the Miele appliances were in, Jeff and his team were able to focus on the rest of the u-shaped kitchen. They built custom features such as a deep eating bar, a butler’s pantry and a cherry wood bar piece. All the countertops are Bianca Carrara marble and coordinate with the warm white, wide framed, Shaker style cabinets. All the appliances have also been outfitted with the warm
