I share insights on embracing companionship to brighten winter days. With extensive experience in caregiving and a commitment to fostering connections, I highlight the transformative power of human connection during the colder months. Explore my valuable tips for a warmer winter.

Photography for the December issue is always a treat. This month, I jumped into the holiday spirit by spending an evening with the sweetest kids, creating Christmas crafts, capturing festive hairstyles and my new all-time favourite: working with RockCoast Confections to create a yummy chocolate wreath for the cover image.

Food and nutrition can be sources of both health and joy – coexisting without guilt or deprivation – when we make eating an intentional act. Clients who cultivate mindful eating practices often tell me they develop a healthier relationship with food, derive more satisfaction from their meals and even improve their digestive health.

The horse community on the Saanich Peninsula continues to thrive and it's been special to see how many of the farms and equestrian centres continue to evolve as the years go by. Passionate coaches, owners and students continue to elevate the sport here on the Island.

Working in Real Estate is a balance between the practical and your own personal expression. Keep it classy, but also comfortable. Should you work in a profession that is active, in and out of a car, such as showing properties, there's no reason you can't look fantastic and feel comfortable too.

Let the holiday baking begin! What better way to start it all off than with a fun rivalry between good friends that share the love of food and hospitality. Baking holiday treats is a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit, so grab your whisks and bowls and join us in a good old-fashioned bake off!

First Word from the Publisher Sue Hodgson

A few days ago a lovely local person came to my office, anxiously hoping to connect with me. After a few minutes she said, "Sue, your column gets better and better every month! How do you do it?" Her words filled my heart with gratitude and love. I told her that I'm really not a writer, but maybe, as my new friend said, I'm a writer "from the heart." My "First Word" column each month gives me some of my most precious moments. It's a time for me to be creative, and to hopefully make a connection with people, whatever their viewpoint. At this time of year I'm thinking about making memories and doing some reflecting. As I look back over this year at Seaside Magazine, I'm feeling very grateful. Really, what better time of the year is there to give thanks to all the amazing people who have impacted my life? A big thank you to everyone! Growing up, I don't really think I understood what the holidays were about, except for waking up and finding amazing presents under a beautifully decorated tree. Now the holidays represent so much more: this time of the year is about giving back and realizing how truly grateful I am for all the blessings I have. I think it's safe to say that most people are just a little happier during the festive season. A wave of Christmas cheer takes over us until mid-January because now is the time when it's perfectly OK to overindulge, to spend a bit more and to have a few late nights. And it's not just me that feels the effects of the season: our community is decorated with beautiful light displays and festive accessories as people prepare for the busiest time of the year for retail. But while many of us will be buzzing with excitement, we must not forget those that don't always feel that way. For some the holidays can be a lonely or a sad time of the year. So take the time to remember those who could be feeling lost. Simply knocking on your neighbour's door, or inviting an elderly person in for tea, could make a world of difference. It's like the connection I made the other day – it meant the world to me and now I'm anxiously waiting to make more before the end of the year! Here's to a very Joyeux Noel!

FRIEND vs. FRIEND THE GREAT CHRISTMAS BAKEOFF photos by Leah Gray

Home baking, especially a family favourite or traditional recipe, is one of the best ways to get everyone into the holiday spirit. Most households have a special dish or treat that they bring out every year – the one classic that it just wouldn't be Christmas without. But who do you turn to when you want to add a new taste to the tried-andtrue selection? We decided to bring back our holiday bake-off for another year, pitching two Sidney business owners (and good friends) against each other, to find the quintessential Christmas cookie. With baking sheets at the ready, they hit the kitchen for a baking bonanza, flavoured with just the right amount of friendly rivalry. Will Courtney Thomas from Quince Cafe win you over with her amaretti treat? Or will Ashley Stelck from Hansell & Halkett Vintage Home Decor take the biscuit with her pecan shortbread? Almonds or pecans, which will you try? Whichever flavour takes your fancy, we know that Courtney and Ashley's special cookies will both make a delicious addition to your holiday baking selection!

DECEMBER 2023 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 11

Courtney Thomas: The holidays can be a time for embracing family traditions and no more so than in the kitchen. In our family, Vinaterta, an Icelandic layered cake, is made in the weeks leading up to Christmas Day. Once cooled, it is carefully wrapped in waxed paper and tucked into my grandmother's old blue cake tin, not to be opened until we get the all clear from mom that it's ready to eat. It is a firm favourite, but also a bit time consuming to make, so I've chosen to share a simple and delicious amaretti cookie recipe that is every bit as satisfying. Chewy, with hints of almond and spice, it lends itself well to a little afternoon indulgence. Fill with your favourite fruit jam, or even a bit of chocolate spread. Then brew a pot of tea and put your feet up!

AMARETTI COOKIE 3 cups almond flour 1/3 cup sugar 1/3 cup firmly packed light brown sugar ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp cinnamon ¼ tsp ginger 1/8 tsp clove 3 egg whites 1 tsp almond extract 1 tsp vanilla jam of your choice 12 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | DECEMBER 2023

Preheat oven to 350° and line two sheets with parchment paper. In a food processor, add the almond flour, sugar, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, ginger and clove. Mix well. Add the egg whites, almond extract and vanilla extract. Pulse until the dough forms a ball. Make tablespoon-sized scoops and roll into balls.

The dough will be sticky, so a bowl of water nearby to wet your hands will be helpful. Place the balls on the cookie sheet and gently flatten, then make an indentation in the centre of each cookie. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden. Cool for 5 minutes, then remove to a cooling rack. Once completely cool, spoon your preferred jam into the centre.

Ashley Stelck: The holiday season and cozy afternoons spent baking morsels dusted with powdery white sugar and sprinkles have gone hand in hand for as long as I can remember. Each year there are the obvious classics I make – shortbreads, tarts and mince pies – and then in addition I always like to try something new. I have to admit I am not the strongest baker: I'm more of a free spirit cook that tends to wing things a bit more than they should when they are meant to weigh and measure with great precision! But there are a handful of recipes that I have found over the years that can be whipped up with a few simple ingredients, are ready in a jiffy and are worthy of a good bake off! These tasty sweet and salty biscuits are filled with toasted pecans and sweetened with golden brown sugar, giving them just that perfect amount of cookie sophistication.

BROWN SUGAR-PECAN SHORTBREAD RECIPE FROM DAVIS LEBOVITZ'S READY FOR DESSERT 2 cups flour 1/4 tsp salt 1 cup salted butter, room temperature 2/3 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1 cup toasted and chopped pecans Mix flour and salt, set aside.

In a mixer beat butter and sugar till smooth with no streaks, then add vanilla. Slowly add flour and mix until incorporated. Stir in pecans. Turn the dough onto a sheet of plastic wrap and form it into a 4''x6'' rectangle. Wrap tightly in the plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for at least an hour.

Prepare two baking sheets with parchment paper, and preheat the oven to 350°. Cut the dough lengthwise into 2 equal pieces, then cut each crosswise into 1/4'' pieces. Place cookies on prepared sheets and bake until golden brown for about 15 minutes.

Holiday Book Wrap-Up

by Jackie LaPlante

The Upstairs Delicatessen: on Eating, Reading, Reading about Eating and Reading While Eating Dwight Garner

Despite being raised in a family that was neither particularly epicurean nor literary, New York Times food columnist Dwight Garner can find apt literary quotes to illustrate his culinary experiences and personal reminiscences. Unwaveringly true to his two abiding passions – books and food – Garner's memoir extols the virtues of guileless diversity: he loves both Chef Boyardee and truffles; will cite Plato and The National Enquirer; and entertains the reader with both light humour and profundity.

The Farmer's Wife: My Life in Days Helen Rebanks

This account of a single day in the life of a farmer's wife leaves the romanticism of England's rolling hills behind. Rebanks, who runs a sheep farm with author/husband James, is forthright about the hard work and monotony of her daily life. However, she invites us to find joy by celebrating the accomplishments of producing and enjoying ethically-raised foods by reminiscing about her early years on her grandmother's farm, and sharing treasured recipes.

18 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | DECEMBER 2023

Great-Uncle Harry: A Tale of War and Empire Michael Palin

Michael Palin has pored through official documents, investigated family gossip and trod the Somme, where his Great-Uncle Harry died in 1916, aged 32. Even though his uncle left few personal memoirs, with meticulous detective work Palin manages to bring his forebear to life. As entertaining on the page as he is onscreen, Palin weaves a well-told story, peppering it with his trademark humour and demonstrating great love and respect for his family.

My Name is Barbra Barbra Streisand

A six-decade career is bound to engender some fascinating stories and Barbra Streisand, now 81, is keen to share. That Barbra is talented and famous is a given. That she name-drops while discussing her career is simply expected. From indepth discussion of her films to her vocal career and impressive list of romantic interests (hello, Pierre Trudeau) the super-sized book is a well-crafted and entertaining journey through the star's life.

The Adversary Michael Crummey

Business rivals and siblings Abe Strapp and The Widow Caines battle for dominance in an outport on the coast of northern Newfoundland. As the community struggles against punishing storms, marauding privateers and scarcity of fish, the lifeblood of the region, the two merchants concern themselves only with their own selfish vendettas. As always, Crummey digs deep into the colourful and often irreverent vernacular of Newfoundland to lighten the darkness of blustery and spare times.

Picturing the Game: An Illustrated Story of Hockey Don Weekes

This illustrated history of hockey is a delightful grab bag of newspaper snippets, editorial cartoons and sports illustrations. Delving back as far as 1900, Don Weekes highlights hockey hallmarks such as the personalities, on-ice violence, and the timeless CanadaUSA rivalry. Editorial is only resonant in its social context, and each illustration is given sufficient historical background. This thoughtful but tongue-in-cheek look at Canada's national game will appeal to diehard fans and those willing to learn!

The Witching Tide Helen Meyer

Martha is a healer, a midwife and a servant. But when a witchfinder comes to East Anglia, the gifts that have always made her useful to the community suddenly make her a target. Literally voiceless, Martha is unable to defend herself against the harsh allegations of those who were once her loving friends and neighbours. Readers may feel a certain sense of deja-vu as condemnations founded on rumours devastate villagers' lives.

A stellar brass quintet joined by an all-star rhythm ensemble will delight, with musical selections like “Good Swing Wenceslas”, soulful “Silent Night”, sentimental favourites from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and, of course, Festive Brass’ infamously twisted “Rudolph Variations”. The wonderful student choirs from Claremont, Parkland and Stelly's Secondary join us to sing some beautiful arrangements and also get in on the fun! Brilliantly bold, jazzy, and sometimes downright quirky arrangements coupled with humorous repartee and plenty of personality will have audiences feeling warm, nostalgic, and fully festive!

Big Hank's Christmas Blues Show

December 15

Big Hank has been touring his Christmas Blues Show for a number of years now and this unique, variety filled program of blues-basted Yuletide tunes is one that has left audiences drenched in the Christmas spirit and coming back for more when the next holiday season rolls around. This refreshing take on holiday concerts finds the singer and his talented, veteran band rolling through music that includes tunes going back a century to Christmas blues tunes that have been favourites of the boomer generation that grew up listening to B.B. King and Eric Clapton. Touring from Vancouver Island to the snowbound prairies of Alberta, this Christmas show has consistently tied together a variety of classic blues styles, some r&b and a touch of soul. Big Hank’s Christmas Blues Show is a concert where every song puts a different spin on the season and everything that goes with “the most wonderful time of the year.”

Make it a

Creative

Christmas! by Carol Balogh

Some of my most cherished

memories of the Christmas season are the times I spent with family and friends making something together. I would get together with friends, and we would chop all the veggies to make antipasto and enjoy a few laughs together. Then we would all go home with jars to share with family and friends over the holiday season. Each Christmas, our family would get the turkey ready for cooking on the 25th. We all had a role to play in making Christmas dinner. Dad would always chop the onions, and one of us kids would make sure the sausage meat was browned and onions softened perfectly to make Mom's secret recipe for turkey sausage stuffing. I loved mashing up those cooked yams, dotting them with butter and sprinkling them with brown sugar. It didn't hurt that we always had a pan of stuffing that didn't make it into the turkey and was ours to sample an hour after the turkey was placed in the oven. Fun in the making – our treat for a job well done. Then, there is the Christmas baking, the cookie exchanges and the building of gingerbread houses – making the favourite recipes passed down to us. I remember fondly those recipe cards written in my mom's handwriting or a dear friend's note on how to make jam-filled thimble cookies. I would honour their creative sharing each year by making those family favorites of mince tarts, shortbread and holiday bars. I remember how much fun it was to teach my neighbour's daughter how to bake gingerbread cookies and decorate them. There was always specially decorated gingerbread cookies heaped with icing and candies to take home for mom and dad.

Even the making of gifts or receiving a handmade gift is so cherished. There is such great personal satisfaction in saying "I made it myself" but better yet is the great big smile and tear-filled eyes of the recipient. There's nothing better … or perhaps it's the thoughtful gift of a homemade loaf of bread delivered from the neighbours on Christmas morning. Here's the thing: it's the sharing of our creative self and sharing in the making that I think is so important in our lives. One only has to look around us and marvel at what has been created – someone designed the chair you are sitting on, and designed its fabric too! Don't forget the clothes you wore today were created by someone as were the electric cars we drive today … the list goes on, and on. Creativity drives innovation and perhaps the creative energy you share someday will inspire someone to create something or some process that changes the way we live our lives today. So, when you are making that Christmas gift list this year, think about how you can create or experience the making with others as your gift. Here are a couple of ideas. Why not grab a friend and make a day trip to our many local wineries to find the perfect pairings for your Christmas dinner? Why not get together with friends to make some Christmas gingerbread and sell them to support a local charity? Why not learn a new skill and take a knitting class with a friend? Wouldn't she be delighted if that cowl you learned to make was your gift to her? The possibilities are endless, as we are all creative. Take it as a personal challenge to use your creativity energy to create a lasting memory this holiday season. Who knows who you will inspire! You can find Carol's creative sharing at www.naturesknitch.com. DECEMBER 2023 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 23

Stepping into the workshop, the first thing that strikes

THE ART OF RESONANCE:

Reuben Forsland & Bernard Funston

your senses is the fragrant aroma of wood. Feeling the weight of rare woods from South America and the lightness of carbon fibre materials, you're amazed. You glance up to see a wall of tools and wooden forms both common and rare. But it's the sense of sound that is most important in the workshop of Sidney guitar makers, Reuben Forsland and Bernard (Bernie) Funston. "It's all about creating an instrument that sounds beautiful," shares Reuben, owner of Joi Guitars. "I like to bring wood to the maximum it can be." Bernie, owner of Funston Guitars, adds: "We are creating something that is visually and sonically beautiful." These two guitar makers, more properly known as luthiers (from the French word lute), share the same workspace and make a variety of instruments. Bernie beautifully crafts steel string acoustic, classical and flamenco, and electric guitars, as well as mandolins. Reuben focuses on acoustic guitars and innovative building materials and design such as his proprietary ellipse bracing system. With skill and imagination, they transform wood that not only produces a beautiful sound but is also a beautiful piece of art. Reuben's "Emblems" and "The Raven" guitars are on display at the Robert Bateman Gallery, and Bernie has created instruments at the request of the government of Norway. Inside their workshop is a wonderful assortment of wood that comes from many places. "The wood we use is sourced from all over the world such as European spruce, woods from Madagascar and Cambodia, ebony, rosewood, cherry wood, red cedar and local arbutus," says Bernie. Each wood is chosen for appearance, durability and sound quality. "Mahogany is strong and durable and has a warmer tone. Sitka spruce creates a bright sound," says Bernie. Reuben is also drawn to the history behind each wood which prompts him to regularly scout out unique finds around the globe. "I like woods that create conversation," he relates. "This ancient Sitka spruce is from a tree that was found in a mudslide in Alaska and was carbon dated at 2,850 years. I create with mahogany from the legendary tree in Belize that luthiers refer to as simply 'The Tree.' It's very rare and exotic." Occasionally, his search leads to startling finds which grant him the opportunity to create and share something very unique. Reuben's Hendrix "Black Gold" and "Legends" guitars are prime examples, both built from wood from the childhood home of legendary Jimi Hendrix. He delights in using unique materials, most recently working with hemp and carbon fibre. "I like creating conversations and important opportunities to talk about things," he comments. "I built the world's first hemp guitar. Hemp is fast growing and has amazing carbon sequestering potential." The guitar-making process involves many stages including cutting wood to a useable thickness, sanding, planing, shaping using heat, bracing, embellishing, installing frets, and final assembly. It's challenging combining artistry with the science necessary to create these instruments. An example is the mathematical precision needed in the bracing that

HOLIDAYS ARE OFTEN ONE OF THE BUSIEST TIMES OF THE YEAR FOR COUNSELLING. As you can imagine, holidays can bring added stress, difficult communications, relational break downs, depression and anxiety to name a few. It’s important to practise good self-care and boundaries during the holidays. Counselling can provide support, education and deep level transformation for these challenges - many of which are considered normal and expected.

Call today and begin the process to a healthier holiday season! provides strength but also affects the vibrations across the soundboard. It all takes time, talent and experience. "Many don't always understand or appreciate the scientific techniques of making a guitar," relates Bernie. "It takes months and months to make one. It's detailed work." The creative process begins with a specific idea. "Working with your client, you have a vision. This gives you direction to the woods and what sound the client would like,"says Bernie. A guitar enthusiast might be seeking a particular tone or a unique look to their guitar through decorative expression. "I like to personalize guitars with inlays of shell, stone and bone," remarks Bernie. "My son is a paleontologist, and his guitar, called "The Evolution of Flight," has an inlay of a dinosaur on the headstock and fretmarkers that depict species of dinosaurs with bird traits. Mammoth ivory was used for the nut and saddle that support the strings." Their guitars have received wide acclaim and found their way into the hands of gifted musicians. Reuben built a custom guitar for Grammy Award winning guitarist Slash, of Guns and Roses, and a steel string guitar for 2019 International finger style champion Matt Thomas. Bernie made two guitars for internationally-acclaimed guitarist and composer Terry Robb and two mandolins for the President Carter Legacy Collection, one of which was played by Nashville star Sierra Hull at the former President's 96th birthday party. They may have different approaches, techniques, and even clients, but both luthiers agree that making guitars has a lasting impact. "I like the fact that someone makes music with what you've built. I like to leave a legacy," says Bernie. Reuben adds: "It's all about stories and emotions, otherwise it's just manufacturing." It's at the intersection of art and science where these two talented craftsmen apply their artistic gifts so that others can create their own musical art. www.funstonguitars.com | www.joiguitars.com

Green Park Duck Pond Three moms who had been friends since the baby years, five kids now school age, and two laid-back dogs were the perfect recipe for a joyful winter solstice walk on a cold but sunny afternoon. The duck pond at Green Park was our destination. We pulled over near a sign indicating that the area had been restored by the Friends of North Saanich Parks. After bundling up in toques and gloves we headed into the trees, a startled jay squawking in indignation and fleeing from the bushes at the sound of our boisterous chatter. A lively little brook followed a wide trail that was carpeted in fallen red cedar needles and lined with salal, mahonia and wild rose. The conifers surrounding us were mixed with arbutus and the slender bare branches of alder, willow, maple and birch. Boots are a must in the winter here as several open grassy areas become saturated with rain. The beautiful mallards and bufflehead ducks hanging out at the pond paddled toward us curiously and we stopped to watch their preening and dipping. A picnic table near the water's edge was a handy place to stop for a snack, catch up on each other's news, trade holiday gift ideas, and laugh about our kids' antics while they ran around exploring nature. Continuing on through the woods we spotted clusters of honey mushrooms, white snowberries scattered on the dirt and a foraging deer. We wound our way around a couple more kilometres of the trail network before thoughts of warm apple cider turned us towards home, ears ringing from the younger cohort's shouty rendition of Frosty the Snowman, and hearts full of friendship.

Things to Note • Get here from Land Ends Road via West Saanich Road or Highway 17 • There is limited roadside parking on Greenpark Drive, Larkspur Lane, Salal Place, and Cardinal Close – please respect private property • Bread is not good for ducks because it has little nutritional value and prevents them from eating their normal diet of plants, fish and insects. Some farm supply stores and places like Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary sell bags of specially-formulated duck food which is a healthier option • There are no washrooms at Green Park or nearby • Trails are accessible but steep in places and may be flooded during the rainy season DECEMBER 2023 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 29

A Holiday Gift Craft Idea for the WHOLE

FAMILY! by Patricia Pearson & Ashley Stelck, Hansell & Halkett Vintage Home Decor

The holidays can be very busy, and finding time to craft and create with the family is not always easy. But this quick craft makes something so lovely it's the perfect gift idea for even the hardest person on your list. I mean, who wouldn't love a tea towel adorned with a sweet pattern designed by little hands and minds! This craft only took us about 30 minutes, with a quick five-minute clean up.

Step 1 Cover your

work surface with paper to protect and for easy clean up. Annie Sloan chalk paint cleans up very easily off any hard surface if wiped before fully cured! Lay out your tea towels. Give lots of room to avoid the towels overlapping with wet paint.

Tools & Supplies • A colour selection of chalk paint – we used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint • White or cream cotton tea towels, pressed smooth • A mix of veggies and fruits cut in half or quarters to make “stamps’’ • Small paint brushes • Brown kraft paper to cover your table (optional) • An iron to heat seal the paint • A warm rag to wipe away any stray paint drips 30 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | DECEMBER 2023

Step 2 Get stamping by choosing any

fruit or veggie shape. We used zucchini, celery, lemons, apples, peppers and pears to create a mix of shapes and sizes. Stamps need to be a very flat surface to give an even stamp. Paint your stamp with a generous amount and gently press down; carefully lift up and repeat or grab another shape!

DECEMBER 2023 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 31

CHRISTMAS MARKET Step 3 Stamp as much of the tea towel as you would like. Create a pattern as you go, mixing colours and shapes.

Step 4 Once pattern is complete, lay flat to fully dry. Once fully dry, heat iron to low-medium (no steam) and press tea towels; this will heat set your paint and make it permanent. We did this the next day to insure the paint was fully dry.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS. Whether you are new to the area, going through a life transition, or unhappy with your current situation, you will find that Deborah takes a unique approach when working with her clients. Her 25 years of experience in the investment industry is her guide when working with investors. Deborah realizes that building a strong client relationship is rooted in trust and transparency is key to an investor’s success. The foundation for a strong relationship is ensuring compatibility and effective communication. Investors want to know that their financial advisor is committed to their success and willing to take the time to listen to what is important to help them determine their goals. It may surprise many to learn that investing is often not about achieving the ‘highest rate of return’, but rather having confidence that their financial advisor understands their goals and will prepare an investment plan that will help achieve those goals. What one investor considers important, another may not, therefore, goals, plans, and solutions are as unique as the individual, so too should be the portfolio! Experience matters when it comes to guiding investors through turbulent markets. Although setting goals, determining the appropriate asset allocation, implementing a strategy, building a portfolio, and monitoring investments are essential to successful investing, the most important factor is the amount of time that the professional spends with the investor. The more investment knowledge and understanding of the markets that an investor has, the greater the chances are for success. When investors are prepared for volatility and understand the emotional roller coaster that can be experienced during market corrections, the less chance they have of making decisions based on emotion rather than discipline and logic. A financial advisor who has experience guiding investors through these market corrections is an invaluable asset to achieving one’s financial goals.

Don’t take chances with your financial success because experience truly does matter! Raymond James Ltd., Member - Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

GOING GREEN by Tina Kelly

Action and Optimism: By the Book A changing climate affects everyone, directly or indirectly, now or later. Understanding it all can be challenging and overwhelming, but your local library is here to help. Climate Action Week, highlighted by the GLAM sector (galleries, libraries, archives and museums), took place in early November. During this annual event, libraries across the country raise awareness and highlight climate change resources. Two library systems span Victoria and the Peninsula – Vancouver Island Regional Library and the Greater Victoria Public Library – and each has created an up-to-date climate change book list. While technically there is no subtheme to Climate Action Week, while glancing at the recommended titles a commonality begins to emerge: the theme of hope, optimism and combatting climate anxiety. Eco-anxiety, or climate anxiety, is on the rise and so too is the number of authors writing about it. An anxious feeling of environmental doom can arise after you've been directly affected by an extreme climate event (i.e. storms, floods, fires) or it may result from the constant, unrelenting news and information focused on environmental disasters. It can also stem from a feeling of guilt over one's own footprint and/or anger and resentment towards others for not doing enough. Like other anxiety disorders, symptoms include panic, depression, disruptions in sleep or focus, or changes in appetite. (www.anxietycanada.com and www.mentalhealthcommission.ca both provide information on understanding and coping with eco-anxiety.) Climate Optimism is the title for VIRL's book list. Among the recommendations are Not Too Late: Changing the Climate Story from Despair to Possibility, Rebecca Solnit and Thelma Young Lutunatabua; How to be a Climate Optimist: Blueprints for a Better World, Chris Turner; I Want a Better Catastrope: Navigating the Climate Crisis with Grief, Hope, and Gallows Humor, Andrew Boyd; and Climate Optimism, Zahra Biabani.

The Climate Action Week reading list on offer from GVPL showcases some of the same titles plus these hopeful and optimistic reads: Saving Us: A Climate Scientist's Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World, Katharine Hayhoe; Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities, Rebecca Solnit; and The Archipelago of Hope: Wisdom and Resilience from the Edge of Climate Change, Gleb Raygorodetsky. Also on the list is Britt Wray's 2022 book, Generation Dread: Finding Purpose in an Age of Eco-Anxiety. CBC voted it one of Canada's best nonfiction books and it was a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award. This book is described as "an impassioned,

informed perspective on eco-anxiety and staying sane amid climate disruption." A book not listed but one with high praise from a former coworker is Elin Kelsey's book: Hope Matters: Why Changing the Way We Think is Critical to Solving the Environmental Crisis. It was required reading for one of her university classes and the content resonated with her long after the course was over. Borrow one of these books from your local library or support your local bookstore. Climate Action Week might be over but our continued learning and taking action should not, and cannot, be limited to those seven days. Let's take action and do it with a sense of hope and optimism.

A blowout with classic flat iron curls creates a timeless and sophisticated hairstyle that combines volume and texture. Beginning with a sleek and smooth blowout as the foundation, classic flat iron curls add a touch of glamour. The process involves sectioning the hair and delicately wrapping each strand around the flat iron, resulting in perfectly defined curls that cascade elegantly. This style is versatile, suitable for all occasions, and can effortlessly transition from day to night, making it a go-to choice for those seeking a timeless and stylish look.

better way to make a statement than with a head-turning holiday hairstyle? Whether you're gearing up for a virtual celebration, a cozy family gathering or a glamorous soiree, your hair deserves to be the star of the show. In this festive guide, we'll unwrap three enchanting holiday hair looks that effortlessly blend elegance with a touch of festive flair! All achievable at home, or of course, in your local salon! Stylists: Sara Arseneault & Cathy Stad Model: Cathy Stad Photos: Janis Jean Photography

Formal Style (side pony) The formal side pony is a sophisticated and stylish hairstyle that combines elegance with a touch of playfulness. This classic look involves sweeping the hair to one side and securing it at the nape of the neck, creating a sleek and polished appearance. Adding a modern twist to a traditional style, this is ideal for formal events such as a corporate Christmas party, weddings or upscale parties. This hairstyle can be customized with varying levels of volume, curls or accessories to suit individual preferences and the formality of the occasion. A timeless and versatile look that exudes both confidence and charm!

Semi Formal (half up / half down) After achieving style #1, achieving a half up, half down semi-formal style is simple! Begin by applying texturizing spray for volume. Part your hair horizontally, securing the upper half in a ponytail with a clear elastic or a decorative clip. Wrap a small section of hair around the elastic for a polished look. Leave the lower half down in loose curls, finishing with a light hairspray to set the style. This effortlessly chic look strikes a balance between sophistication and a relaxed vibe, making it perfect for semi-formal occasion. 38 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | DECEMBER 2023

Most people have probably heard about clenching and grinding, but did you know that it can even happen during the day? Here, Dr. Mitra Hashemi of Coast Dental Care provides her expertise on clenching and grinding, and their symptoms and solutions. What is clenching and grinding? Teeth clenching is a vertical force, putting pressure on your teeth from above and below – teeth grinding, on the other hand, is a sideto-side motion that can wear down your enamel and cause flattening, fracturing or chipping. Clenching often leads to muscle pain, sore jaw, and pressure on the joints. The clenching or grinding of teeth, also known as bruxism, is a relatively common occurrence that can happen either during the day or while you sleep. If done while you're awake, it is typically subconscious, especially during times of deep concentration, anger or stress – you may not even notice you're doing it. What are some of the symptoms? Mitra says there are two categories of symptoms: the ones that can easily be seen by a dental professional during a checkup, and those that the patient themselves report feeling. For example: abraded teeth, worn enamel, wear facets and chipped or cracked teeth can show a dentist that you may struggle with clenching and grinding. On the other hand, if a patient reports facial pain, overly sensitive teeth, tense face and jaw muscles, headaches, a popping or clicking in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or locking of the jaw, these could be signs of clenching. "Typically with clenching, you won't have many symptoms visible on your teeth – but you might complain about pain in your muscles, even back pain, shoulder pain or headaches," says Mitra. "Your joints may start hurting, and you might be exhausted when you wake up or have sensitivities on your teeth." With grinding, you may have no pain in your muscles but significant wear on your teeth. It's also possible to have a combination of any or all of the above. "A lot of times, people are not even aware they're doing it,"says Mitra. "For example, grinding comes with a lot of noise, so if you sleep with a partner, they're likely to notice it – but clenching is very quiet. You can still put so much pressure on your teeth, even with quiet clenching. I had a patient with perfectly healthy teeth,

We Are Exercise Specialists!

who broke their tooth in half just from clenching. The damage of clenching and grinding can be very extreme." What treatment options are available? The first step is understanding more about clenching and grinding, and being aware of which type of damage you might be doing to your teeth. Then it's time to figure out your treatment options. "The initial advice we always offer to people, when they notice the acute symptoms of TMJ discomfort, are the early treatment options: starting with a softer diet, heat treatment on the face, taking antiinflammatory medication like ibuprofen, visiting health practitioners like chiropractors, physical therapists, or acupuncturists to adjust your jaw and relax your muscles, and of course the very important recommendation to wear your nightguard," says Mitra. Of course, the most obvious protection for people to use is a nightguard, which is a great initial treatment. "Sometimes you might even need to use it during the day,"explains Mitra. "If you are focused, doing heavy lifting, driving – these are the moments you might be prone to clenching your teeth, so you'd want to wear your nightguard. It's also the same with heavy sports, including bodybuilding and lifting." In more severe cases, a different solution might be required. "It's not a first line of defence, but Botox is a great option in extreme cases,"says Mitra. "You can wear down your nightguard, even damage or break it while clenching your teeth at night. Botox can be a great alternative and a great investment for people."It might sound strange, but the treatment works to relax your muscle and deactivate those tense muscles as much as possible. It can be expensive, but Mitra works to keep it as accessible as possible. "It's also temporary, and wears off after four to six months – but the good thing is that the mass of muscles starts shrinking a little bit, so they produce less force, less pressure and less trauma as an end result." When you get older, your teeth are more prone to fractures and your jaw can be affected by arthritis, just like the rest of your body. This can be exacerbated by clenching and grinding, so it's important to protect your teeth from damage. "You can lose enamel around your gums, and even lose your teeth from the severe force; this is what we want to avoid." The biggest tip? "You don't want to wait until the damage is done – it's much better to address the problem early, and be proactive about it."

One More Resolution for the New Year! submitted by CRD Environmental Services

The start of

a new year is the perfect time for fresh beginnings and personal growth. While many of us contemplate hitting the gym or learning a new language, why not also consider making a resolution that can help our environment? Here are some ideas to help you create a sustainable New Year's resolution that makes a meaningful impact on reducing waste. One of the biggest culprits of waste is food. In our 2022 waste composition study we found avoidable food waste such as wilted lettuce, stale bread and meat leftovers made up 63% of all organics sent to the landfill, contributing to pollution and misusing precious resources. Here's how you can prevent this issue head-on: Shop Smart. Kick off your resolution by creating a grocery list that's concise and focused. Buy only what you need for the week, avoiding the temptation to over-purchase and generate food waste. Store Smart. Extend the lifespan of your groceries by storing them properly to keep your produce fresh and ready to use. Get creative with leftovers. Turn last night's dinner into today's delightful lunch or whip up a new recipe. Not only will you reduce waste, but you'll also save some of the cash in your pockets. In addition to food, our consumption of material goods is a notorious waste generator. Here's how you can break the cycle and embrace sustainable alternatives: Sharing is Caring. Instead of trashing items you no longer want, consider donating them to second-hand stores or advertising them online for free for someone who needs them. It's a win-win – decluttering your space while making someone else's day. Recycling 101. Before tossing items, check if they're recyclable. MyRecyclopedia.ca can guide you on responsible disposal methods, ensuring that your waste gets a second life. Second-Hand Treasures. When it's time for a new purchase, explore second-hand options. Thrift stores and online community pages are great for pre-loved goods, giving you fantastic finds without the environmental guilt. Remember, a sustainable New Year's resolution revolves around the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Although reuse and recycle and well-versed options, we should focus on the reduce part first. By making a conscious effort to be mindful consumers, we can make small changes that will leave a positive mark for generations to come. What better gift for the holidays than a sustainable future? OFF THE VINE by Tilar Mazzeo

A Teetotaler Holiday new national guidelines for talking with patients about alcohol. Should you be fortunate enough to have a GP, you can expect "the talk." So that's something to look forward to in 2024. I got "the talk" in November, and, if you're looking for a boot in the pants, allow me to summarize for you: "Booze is poison." All of this poses, of course, something of a dilemma for your intrepid wine, beer and spirits columnist. I considered writing in time for the holidays a column on nonalcoholic beer alternatives, but, after I tasted a half-dozen nonalcoholic "beers," I gave up. Honestly, they aren't very good. I paid everywhere from 50 cents a can to $5 a bottle, and the best of them in my view is Budweiser Zero, which at least has the merit of managing to capture exactly the same degree of tastelessness as the real thing. And that's the good news I've got for you on the beer front. Thrifty's Compliments brand isn't terrible, and it at least has the virtue of being inexpensive. Some of the craft and premium brands aren't bad, but I refuse to pay $5 a can for boiled beer (the essence of the most common de-alcoholization process) on principle. The fundamental problem is that boiling your beer does about as much for it as boiling your wine. I tried a few bottles of that too, hoping to have something for you, and non-alcoholic wine is just a disaster. I had hopes for holiday cocktails made with spirit-free botanicals. I dropped $45 – each – on a couple of bottles of "botanical distillates" and mixed up about a half-dozen "mocktails," and, look, I don't want to say bad things about small producers trying hard to do a good thing. So let's just put it this way: eh. Some of them were perfectly tasty concoctions, don't get me wrong. But none of them were convincing substitutes, and, if I'm not going to be convinced, at that

price point why not just drink fizzy water with a splash of bitters and throw in a paper umbrella if I'm feeling fancy? Right, right. So that's all a downer. What's our holiday game plan here people? Here are my three ideas for low- and no-alcohol drinks for the holiday season. Enjoy responsibly. One: Bring back the Virgin Bloody Mary. Vodka is tasteless, so you won't miss the flavour, at least. You've got the tomato-juice redness. Dress that mocktail up with some spice and green, and you are in the holiday spirit. Wasabi candy canes anyone? Sriracha? Rim the glass with seaweed-based green salt. It's the current health-conscious trend in California (learn about it at www.trygreensalt.com). Two: Try a cedar and birch syrup sparkler. Want to know what tastes like drinking a Christmas wreath, in a good way? A splash of birch syrup (www.canadianbirchsyrup.com), some iced cedar tea (try www.teanbannock.ca), and some sparkling water over ice. Get creative with that garnish. It's not mock anything, just itself. Three: It's not alcohol free, but there are some great low-alcohol wine options. German and Austrian Rieslings naturally come in as low as nine to 10%, which is a big step down, glass-for-glass, from the 14.9% fruit bombs you see out there. Just make sure, if you're shopping Riesling, you look for a Qualitätswein (QbA) or even a Prädikatswein, because there is a big difference between good and bad Riesling. If you're looking for sparkling, Vinho Verde often comes in as low as 8% alcohol often, and you can also look for a "Pet-Nat." Due to the production technique, these are lightly sparkling and naturally low-alcohol wines. Sperling Vineyards out of the Okanagan produces one that comes in at 8.3% (www. sperlingvineyards.com), but a number of B.C. wineries release them from time to time in small quantities. If you want to drop your consumption even lower, look, add some soda water and ice. I'm not judging.

Making space for

comfort

Your donation to our Acute Care Unit Renovations will make everyone more comfortable. For over thirty years, Dr. Marsh has walked into hospital rooms and seen patients become friends and advocates for each other.

" A patient sees the woman beside her crying, so she calls the nurse in for help. Or, I walk in and see a poker game going on. So, there are some advantages to sharing a room. In addition to infection control, we want to improve the rooms' functionality and energy efficiency and make them as private and comfortable as possible for patients and their loved ones – our main goals." – Dr. Ambrose Marsh, Campaign Chair

Exceptional care for every patient. That’s the commitment of our Acute Care Unit’s (ACU) dedicated doctors, nurses, and support staff. After five decades of devoted service, it’s now time to upgrade the space to reflect the quality of care the ACU Team provides every day.

With your help we can transform the Acute Care Unit for the better! Efficiency is a top priority. The renovated layout will make the most of the available space. This means more room for crucial healthcare equipment and more ergonomic spaces for patient care and staff workflow. Our staff will be able to move around the bedside more easily and have all the necessary equipment right at their fingertips.

Safety is at the core of our upgrades. We’ll add more hand hygiene sinks, to ensure that infection control remains a top priority. Privacy is of utmost importance. Reconfigured patient rooms will provide more privacy and comfort for both patients and visitors. Taking care of our caregivers. Our staff will have better designed and more efficient work areas, where they can focus on what matters most – providing exceptional care. Your gift can directly impact the comfort of patients, visitors and staff by supporting much needed renovations at our hospital. Together, we’ll transform the ACU into a space that better serves the needs of everyone for years to come.

A Festive

However you salute the season, this

is the time of year where we have an excuse to indulge. As with most families, there are certain traditional recipes that are expected to appear each December, but I often try to incorporate new options into the festivities; some are successful while some not so much. This recipe is one that's become a clear crowd-pleaser. Panettone was not something that I grew up with, but I tried making it a few years ago and it's now one of my seasonal favourites. It's a fabulous Italian bread laced with citrus zest and lovely dried

Favourite

fruit. Not only is it wonderful on its own, but it also makes a very upscale version of French toast. When you show up at a holiday event with a gorgeous panettone wrapped up and tied with a festive bow, you'll be ensured of a very warm welcome. What's lovely about this recipe is that it's impressive and beautiful in its flavours and colours, but it's also adaptable. If you're not keen on sour cherries, add more raisins, cranberries, chopped dried apricots or even some dark chocolate chunks. If you don't have golden raisins, use whatever you've got tucked away. While the recipe calls for a panettone pan or paper mold, the first time I made it I used a small cake pan and it worked just fine. What's important is that you give it time to rise to create the gorgeous fluffy, springy dough. Then, when you slice it, maybe slather it with butter; you'll be rewarded with a bread that's compact but light, rich from the butter and eggs, airy and fragrant. It's a delicious and elegant way to celebrate the season.

Celebratory Panettone 3 ½ cups flour 4 ½ tsp instant yeast ½ tsp salt ½ cup light cream ¼ cup water ⅓ cup butter 1/3 cup sugar 2 eggs 2 egg yolks 1 tsp vanilla

½ cup dried cranberries ½ cup golden raisins ½ cup dried sour cherries (chopped up a bit) ½ cup candied citrus peel zest of 1 orange zest of 1 lemon To finish: 1 egg 2 tbsp cream

Supplies needed: 1 (7 by 4 inch) panettone pan or a disposable paper panettone mold (I have used a 7 x 3 inch cake pan, and it worked just fine), pastry brush and a cookie sheet. In a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook add the flour, yeast, salt. Set this mix aside. Place the milk and water in a medium pot over low-medium heat and add the butter and sugar. Stir until the milk is warm but not boiling, and the butter has melted. Add the warm milk/butter mix to dry ingredients; mix on low speed until all is incorporated. Add eggs, egg yolks, vanilla; mix for another 2-3 minutes. Add dried fruit, peel and citrus zests; mix for another 3-5 minutes until all is incorporated. At this point, the dough will be very sticky and soft. Lightly butter or oil a large bowl; place dough in it. Cover bowl with some plastic wrap, then put it in a warm, draft-free spot. Let dough rise until it has doubled in size, which should take about an hour and a half. Once dough has risen, remove wrap; punch it down in the bowl to release air that the yeast produces. Turn dough out onto a lightly-floured surface; let it rest for about 10 minutes. By rolling around the dough in large circles on the counter, create a large ball. Now put ball of dough in panettone pan or paper mold. Cover loosely with some plastic wrap that has been lightly buttered/oiled on the side that touches the dough. Place pan/mold on cookie sheet in warm, draft-free spot; allow dough to rise until doubled in size again. You want a nice dome above the edges of mold/pan. This usually takes about an hour. Remove wrap from top of dough. Preheat oven to 350°. Make sure oven racks are set up so there is plenty of headroom for panettone to bake. Create egg wash: in a small bowl, whisk together egg and cream. Using pastry brush, gently coat top of the dough with wash. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until panettone is golden brown and cooked through. To check if done, a wooden skewer should come out clean if inserted in middle of the panettone. Allow panettone to cool completely before removing it from the pan or packaging up.

Six Holiday Survival Tips! The holiday season is supposed to be a time of festivities, yet for many of us, holiday cheer can dissolve into holiday stress. Long distance travelling, family get-togethers, extra shopping and social obligations can eventually wear the mind and body down. To top it all off, during this chaotic time it's not uncommon to overindulge in food and drink as we try to soothe emotional stress. Ironically enough, most of us feel worse either during or after the holiday season. Does this all sound too familiar? This year, it doesn't have to be! Follow these six tips to keep you healthy in the holiday spirit. 1. It's OK to indulge – in moderation! Many of us associate the holidays with our favourite comfort foods. You don't have to completely deprive yourself of all the holiday treats this year, just plan wisely. Make sure to eat your nutrients before your treats! 2. Give your baked goods a makeover. Try experimenting a little with healthy and nutritious substitutions. Some baked goods taste just as great using gluten-free flours. Using sugar substitutes like applesauce or bananas can reduce the amount of sugar on the body or I often even cut the amount of sugar in half when baking. Also, the addition of oats and nuts into many batters will make baked goods more filling and nourishing, minimizing the desire to overeat. 3. Support those stress glands! Extra stress during the holidays can cause your body to use up nutrients more rapidly; therefore, extra anti-stress vitamins and minerals are needed to support the body. The B vitamins especially have active roles in regulating mood and emotional well-being. Taking a B complex once or twice a day can be helpful. Botanical herbs such as rhodiola, ashwagandha, holy basil and schizandra are greatly appreciated to help fight fatigue, reduce the levels of stress hormones circulating in the body, and increase the body's

capacity to cope with stress. 4. Keep up with your exercise! During periods of stress, exercise can alter your body chemistry to calm and soothe upset nerves. Even though the holiday season can be a difficult time to keep up an exercise routine, try working out first thing in the morning or plan family activities such as walking in one of our beautiful local parks. 5. Be diligent with your immune support! This time of the year include vitamin C, echinacea, astragalus, vitamin D and zinc as part of your daily routine to help

keep your immune system strong enough to ward off unwanted bugs. 6. Make sure you rest and breathe. Most importantly this holiday season, make sure you get enough rest! Proper sleep and relaxation will help keep the immune system strong as well as relieve stress. Take the time to wind down and don't feel obligated to do everything and see everyone. Choose activities that truly give you joy and forget about obligations. Let your to-do list get finished tomorrow. Have a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM YOUR BRENTWOOD CROSSING FAMILY!

Bonnie Brae Farm Bonnie Brae Farm is situated in Central Saanich on close to 30 idyllic acres, and has a storied history dating back to the early 1900s. Although it's now home to a large equestrian estate – including an indoor arena, 40-stall barn, large outdoor arena, paddocks and a hay field – the original 1911 farmhouse still stands on the property. While the farm has been run as an equestrian centre for many years, since Bonnie Campbell and Frank Wright purchased the property in 2021 they've put in a lot of work to continue to expand and improve the facilities. Although Bonnie describes herself as an animal lover, and while she did some horseback riding while growing up, she laughs as she admits that she never really thought "Oh, one day we'll own a farm!" But when her daughter Alison's riding career began to take off, Bonnie and her husband Frank began to think more seriously about purchasing a farm. Brittney Eastgate of Eastgate Dressage 58 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | DECEMBER 2023

had been coaching Alison for a few years and as Brittney's coaching and training business was steadily growing, the need for an indoor arena to continue riding yearround became more apparent. Bonnie says she "really liked the environment [Brittney] had created" with a "good, committed group of parents and riders." Brittney moved her horses and clients to the new farm and runs the operations along with her team of coaches and staff. The facility has seen many upgrades over the past couple of years. New performance footing was added to the indoor arena, and the outdoor arena was completely redone. New lighting was added to the outdoor arena and is set up in such a way that there are no shadows (which sometimes scare or spook the horses) for riding at night. enlarged stalls. The large field at the back of the property is hayed each year and a trail is cut around the edge of it so riders can cool their horses out after they ride along the trail. Bonnie cites her goal of creating a "safe, clean barn – something we'd be proud of." Recently, coach and trainer Katie Hourigan of Coastal Equestrian has moved her clients and horses to Bonnie Brae Farm to offer a high-performance show jumping training and sales program. Brittney and Katie, though both local to Victoria, hadn't met until they both found themselves taking their High Performance Coaching Certificate training through Equine Canada; when the opportunity to bring their businesses together at the same facility came up, they saw how having both dressage and show jumping training could work well alongside, and even complement, each discipline with cross training. Katie saw the move to the new facility as a great fit with a more central location and "bigger rings for us than what we previously had," she says. In collaboration with Eastgate Dressage, Bonnie Brae Farm has begun hosting dressage schooling shows over the past year. "Getting off the Island is not the easiest to do," says Brittney, and often it's a big financial undertaking, especially with transporting horses and then having to find accommodation etc. The local schooling shows have allowed for more students to compete on the Island and they've even seen riders and horses travelling from up-Island to compete at the farm. "Hopefully we'll host some gold shows in the future," adds Brittney. Both coaches have plans to head south to California with some of their students and horses over the winter for shows and training. "We have a big team approach at the barn," says Brittney, and while she's away she relies on her team of coaches at the farm to continue teaching her students. The property's legacy continues on as the team at Bonnie Brae Farm looks forward to continuing to make improvements and offer a state-of-the-art equestrian experience. THE GOLDEN YEARS by Sherrin Griffin VP, Operations, Sidney SeniorCare

Seniors Give Deeper Meaning to the Holidays As the holiday season fast approaches, we are all reminded of what this special time of year means to us and our families. Whether we celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali or other seasonal festivals, we can all agree that it is a truly magical time to not only observe age-old traditions, but to gather together young and old to enjoy the beauty of the season. It's a time to lay down arms, divest ourselves of worry about the current state of the world, and focus on peace and goodwill towards others. Steeped in tradition and time-honoured rites, the holidays are a golden opportunity to let the seniors in your life really shine; trust me – they

have the inside track on the best Christmas movie classics, the most delicious cranberry rugelach recipes, and tips to get that turkey dinner cooked to juicy perfection. More than a few famous seniors are associated with this special time of year – Bing Crosby's song White Christmas is still wildly popular after eight decades, and who hasn't watched the 75+ year-old It's a Wonderful Life starring Jimmy Stewart at least a gazillion times. The wisdom, values and messaging in these classics are timeless, no matter how many decades pass. With no doubt, at the ripe old age of 1,752 years old, the most celebrated holiday senior of all is Father Christmas – "Saint Nick" or

"Santa Claus," as he is more commonly known. According to legend, a Turkish monk named Nicholas born sometime around 270 AD became well known for his good deeds and signature "miracle" of placing gold in the hanging stockings of three sisters to provide money for their dowries. His kindness and generosity became widespread and he was eventually deemed the patron saint of children, with the legend later spreading to America by a group of Dutch settlers. While the Santa Claus of today seems to be more associated with commercial hype and boundless gifts, today's seniors can help to remind us how to enjoy the simple delights of the season – how wonderful it feels to give whole-heartedly, rather than receive, and to share holiday tasks together whether that be making popcorn strings for a Christmas tree or creating a light display for Diwali. While we're rushing around trying to get everyone that perfect gift, it's important to remember the well-being of older family members, and other senior members of our community. Sadly, many seniors will spend the holiday season alone this year, with some having no family nearby, or at all, while others languish alone in hospital or longterm care facilities. Even though loneliness isn't reserved just for Christmas, it is felt more acutely during the holiday season when advertising and expectations are at their highest point of the year. The best gift we can give seniors this holiday season is to open our homes and hearts up to those who get lost in the shuffle. We can all make a difference, by sharing festive treats with an older neighbour, popping a holiday card through a senior's door, or by simply taking a few minutes to have a chat with an elderly member of your community – these kind gestures only take a moment and can have such a positive impact on seniors' overall well-being. Communities often organize special efforts to help seniors during the holidays. Check with your local groups, charitable organizations or churches to see if you can help out over the holiday season with cooking/transporting meals, groceries or gift baskets, or simply companionship to a senior in need. Happy holidays to all!

CANADIANS – “PASSIVE INVESTMENT” LAGGARDS Peter Dolezal is a semi-retired Sidney resident. He offers INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL CONSULTING SERVICES to individuals, couples and companies. To date, he has assisted more than 325 clients across Canada, principally in Greater Victoria and the Lower Mainland. No Financial Products to Sell Leads to Truly Independent Advice.

The entire global investment community, except it seems, in Canada, has awakened to the startling benefits of “passive” investment, particularly in Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs).

Index by about 25% before the investor matches Index performance – an almost impossible task over the long term, as proven by the SPIVA report.

Globally, 37% of invested funds is now in passive investments, while 63% continues to be held in actively-managed products, primarily mutual funds. In the U.S., 45% of invested capital is now passive, while in Canada, only 15% has transitioned to passive investment structures.

Why the lagging tendency of Canadian investors to gravitate to passive investing? Much of the answer lies in the substantial control which Canadian asset managers have over product distribution. Because much of their profit flows from the fees charged on their actively-managed funds, many Canadian Banks do not permit their advisers to sell ETFs.

Given that Management Expense Ratios (MERs) on Canadian mutual funds are significantly higher than those in the U.S. and other G-7 counties, this slower adoption of passive investment strategies in Canada is particularly surprising. The logic favouring passive investing has never been more clear than that outlined in the most recent, semi-annual S&P Indices Versus Active Funds (SPIVA) report. Despite the claims of many fund managers, it confirms that over the last 10 years only 5.4% of Canadian actively-managed Equity funds outperformed the TSX Index. This was similar to that of the U.S., where only 6.5% outperformed over the past 15 years.

Compared to ETFs, the performance shortfall of “actively” managed investments is almost entirely due to the much higher annual holding costs of active products such as mutual funds. If, for example, a particular Index shows a 5% total return in a given year, the actively-managed portfolio must “beat” the

The message to Canadian investors? Refuse to be trapped in high-cost managed funds. If your adviser cannot, or refuses, to assist in establishing a passive alternative, change advisers, or go “solo.” Any individual can open a discount trading account, even with their current Bank, and establish their own ETF-based “Couch Potato” investment portfolio – saving significant annual holding costs in the process. If lacking the expertise for the initial selection of ETFs, an investor may need independent professional assistance with the initial set-up – at minor cost relative to the savings in fees over what is often a decades-long investment time horizon. Passive investing does not try to beat the market; it simply matches the performance of the selected Index. As history proves, matching carefully-selected, well-diversified Indexes at minimal holding cost delivers very acceptable total returns over the long term.

INSIDE OUT by Kristin Mackenzie, MSc, RD Kristin Mackenzie Nutrition

Eating Mindfully for the Holidays Many of us eat on auto-pilot. When we are busy and prioritizing other things, we can lose touch with what our body is telling us. There is no time quite as busy as the holidays, so it's no surprise our food-related stress can be at an all-time high. My top holiday food tips often include: not skipping meals to "save up"for a holiday celebration feast, and staying hydrated to avoid hunger-thirst miscommunication. Perhaps more importantly, I focus with clients on mindful eating strategies to help them navigate joyful, healthy eating during the holiday season. Mindful eating is developing more awareness of our eating experience in the present moment. Being attuned to what, when and how we are eating from a calm and neutral perspective – there are no "good"or "bad"foods, just as we are not a "bad person" for eating those delicious mashed potatoes with gravy! Eating mindfully can help you nourish your body and indulge in goodies with gentle awareness and without guilt – during the holidays and year-round. Slow down. Many of us speed eat, which can wreak havoc on our ability to sense fullness appropriately. It's true: there is a lag of about 20 minutes for your brain to send out fullness signals after you start eating. Slowing down can be tough though! My practical suggestion is to notice whether you preload your fork; is the next bite of food ready to go while you are still chewing? Minimize distractions. Being distracted when eating – think

chatting and multitasking in front of a smorgasbord of food – can impact how much we eat by dampening the fullness signals our brain sends out. Try to find a quiet(er) spot to eat, preferably sitting down, so you can better connect with the experience of eating and pay attention to the smells and tastes. Don't love it? Don't eat it. There can be an overwhelming amount of choice throughout the holidays and we can feel compelled to sample a little of everything … which quickly turns into a full plate! Stick with the favourite holiday foods you know you will deeply enjoy. If you take a bite and something isn't delicious and satisfying, it's okay not to finish it. Savour. The first few bites always taste the best, so make sure to check in with your satisfaction level as you eat. If you are no longer hungry and it isn't tasting good, there is no need to clean your plate (despite what you may have been taught!). Try to enjoy each bite. Holiday foods are often higher in calories, sugar and fat but may only be eaten a few times a year. It's okay to enjoy! Food is about so much more than nutrition. Nana's shortbread was about the love she baked into those cookies, not the fat content. Even with an arsenal of strategies, it's easy to overindulge and feel guilty afterwards. Go easy on yourself. Practise some self-kindness and try not to set any major health goals over the holidays – simply maintaining your current state of health is a huge win!

Make it a stress-less holiday season! 1. Be realistic. The holidays don’t have to be perfect or the same as years past. Choose a few traditions to hold on to, and be open to creating new ones.

2. Plan ahead. Set aside

specific days for shopping, visiting friends or other activities to help prevent last minute scrambling.

3. Take a breather.

Spending just 15 minutes alone may refresh you enough to handle what you need to do.

4. Take care. Look after your own physical health by resting, eating well and exercising regularly.

1906 CROSS ROAD FARM:

Poultry & Parenting on the Peninsula

Being new parents means constantly learning and frequently laughing. Michael and Jess Charlesworth, of 1906 Cross Road Farm, not only apply this to their family life, but also to their new foray into farming. The local couple are enjoying the challenges and rewards of parenting a three-year-old and an infant of six months, and since 2021, learning how to master raising chickens for egg production. "We have grown the farm to this point – it's not a hobby now," shares Jess, adding with a grin: "Farming is an adventure; we learn to roll with it." This adventure is a family affair, as evidenced by three-year-old Franklin who enthusiastically follows his father around and points out the chickens and other features of the farm. Despite their lack of farming experience, lots of research, hard work and a can-do attitude have enabled the couple to make gains towards their goal. Their bright blue roadside stand is stocked with farm fresh eggs in response to the increasing demand from customers. "We've been encouraged by neighbours and friends," says Jess. "Our chickens lay eggs which are picked that day and go directly to the stand. They're very fresh!" The couple co-purchased the four-acre property with a friend in 2016. They were keen to find a place to live that provided acreage and room to grow. "We had seen ads for acreages for sale," says Michael. "We wanted to have some space and not to feel crammed into somewhere in town." They tried a few livestock options before finally settling upon chickens and discovered a demand for their poultry's eggs. "When we started, people were asking for eggs," says Michael. "Eggs are a universal product," adds Jess. "We can do this year-round, and it's an easy way to support local food production." The two of them began by clearing fields, installing water lines and setting up poultry runs and housing. In 2021 they increased the flock from 100 to 399. "We're registered with BC Eggs, and this number is the maximum for a Small Lot Producer," comments Jess. "The next level is commercial producer which would be a major step for us." Meat chickens were added in 2022 and also turkeys. The latter have been an especially successful addition. "We sold 97 turkeys this year," says Jess. "It was rewarding for us." Adds Michael: "It makes us happy

to know customers are eating our products in their homes with their families." Through the process, the young farmers have learned and applied new initiatives to provide optimum care for their poultry. "I built chicken tractors which are portable coops to give chickens new areas to graze," shares Michael. "They are based on the ideas of an American farmer, Joel Salatin. Each house is about 10 feet by 10 feet, and I can move it around with the use of a good dolly." Not only do these specialized tractors provide protection and shelter for the poultry, but they are a benefit to the landscape too. Chickens can scratch and dig the ground for bugs, seeds, grass and other edibles, and in doing so, they serve as two-legged tractors tilling the soil. In addition, their manure is excellent for fertilization. "We use chicken manure on the fields where we're growing garlic," says Jess. The free-range approach delivers up flavourful eggs. "The colour reflects what the chicken eats and is doing," says Michael. "They have access to outdoor space, foraging and eating grass, and so, a good flavour of egg is produced." With the demands of two growing children and the daily minutiae of the farm, the days are busy and varied. Family and friends have helped the couple along the way. "We have a project to work on with everyone. Family helps out and we have more time with them and our kids," says Jess. An HVAC engineer by day, Michael enjoys the challenges and rewards of farming tasks when he gets home. "I like problem solving," comments Michael. "It's rewarding. I like seeing the animals through the stages of life." What started as an idea for an interesting project has expanded into a small business venture and lifestyle. Poultry housing has evolved, techniques and approaches continue to mature, and customer support and interest grows. "We have customers wanting more, but it's a big step and a larger investment," says Jess. Michael says: "We're trying our best to give the birds we are raising the best life so [we can] provide the best product to our customers." It takes effort and often a lot of juggling, but for this couple, the opportunity to provide food for a growing family, to be a part of the local farming community and to participate in food security make it all worthwhile. November Meeting by Deborah Rogers

Book Club

The last read of our Book Club year turned out to be a bit of a let down. Everyone Knows Your Mother is a Witch by Rivka Galchen had lots of elements that appealed to our group, but it missed the mark for most of our readers. Galchen is a highly-lauded writer, frequently published in the New Yorker and London Review of Books, as well as a writing teacher at Columbia University. Everyone Knows Your Mother is a Witch is her second novel and earned prize nominations and critical acclaim. It's a strange sort of book. Galchen took her inspiration from the true story of 17th-century mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler's fight to save his mother from being burned as a witch. In the early 1600s, Germany was in the grip of witch-hunting hysteria, with an estimated 900 women executed for witchcraft. Galchen's book is a fictionalized account of this real scenario, with Katharina Kepler as the main character, accused of being a witch by a neighbour. In the novel, Katharina's plight is taken up by her neighbour Simon, who acts as guardian for her as she faces the magistrate and courts. The subject matter is a sort of absurd black humour. We see increasingly ridiculous charges levelled at the main character – who is an illiterate, old woman living alone with her cow – and she is unable to defend herself, because she is a woman. Katharina is charged with making her neighbour ill with a bitter potion, of walking past a man and causing a pain in his leg and of riding a goat backward. As each charge is added to the list, it gets harder and harder for Katharina to shrug them off. The term "witch hunt" has been back in our vocabulary in recent years, and we couldn't help but see the parallels to the current climate where individuals are frequently denounced for seemingly innocuous acts and then rounded on and hounded by increasing numbers. One of our readers noted the resonances between the 1600s and today, both times of plague and war. With all the in-depth research and clever connections between then and now, we were disappointed that the book just didn't seem to go anywhere. The characters were underdeveloped, and we couldn’t get a sense of what was motivating them. Although Everyone Knows Your Mother is a Witch was a struggle to get through for many of our group, we enjoyed our discussion. There's no Book Club in December. We'll be starting 2024 discussing Tom Lake by Ann Patchett. Join us on Tuesday, January 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sidney/North Saanich Library, but make sure you sign up to our email list to stay up-to-date with any Book Club news or meeting changes: www. seasidemagazine.ca/book-club/.

Helpful Tips: Interacting with Someone Who is Blind or Partially Sighted by Gina Martin, Owner/Consultant, Diverse Abilities

Many people won't say anything or offer assistance to those of us with sight loss, because they worry about saying or doing the wrong thing or offending us. Having some guidelines to follow can help interactions. The thoughts below seek to be helpful and break down barriers between those who are blind or partially sighted and our sighted supporters. When you say "hello" to us, awesome things can happen! By just saying "hello," you've treated us like everyone else. Your "hello" makes us feel included and seen as part of the community. As people who are blind or who have low vision, we miss the daily interactions through physical gestures that people give each other throughout the day. For those of us who visually cannot see, your verbal "hello" is taken as that smile, nod, wave or friendly gesture. Your "hello" lets us know you are there, because we cannot always see you. By letting us know you're there, you've given us the opportunity to interact with you, ask for assistance, or ask a question if we need to. Because we can't see you, we don't always know if you are talking to us. If you know my name and say "Hi Gina," I'll know for sure that you are talking to me. For a person with blindness or limited vision, surrounding ambient noises such as conversations, traffic, music playing, etc.,

combine to prevent us from identifying someone by voice alone. So, it's helpful if you say "Hi Gina, it's me, Mary." We can then be certain that you are addressing us, and whom we're talking with. Please never grab, push or pull us. We visually cannot see your intentions, so being grabbed is often very terrifying. When people with good intentions physically try to move us, it takes away our ability to effectively use our cane to detect obstacles in our path, it's disorienting, and at the very least, it disrupts our ability to directionally orient ourselves. Grabbing, pushing or pulling can also cause us injury. If you are concerned about our safety, yelling "Lady with the white cane STOP there is a bike approaching on your left" is immensely helpful. No one appreciates being touched by strangers, especially when you are unable to see someone's intentions. If you want to help, always ask first. "Would you like some assistance?" If we say no, then please don't be offended. Not everyone will need help, even when it is kindly offered. Being told "No thank you" today does not mean your offer of help won't be appreciated another time. If we say yes, your next question needs to be: "How can I help?" as no two people need help the same way. Vision loss occurs on a spectrum and it's different for everyone. It's best to never guess what someone can or cannot see; just know it is much less than you. Losing my sight has not changed who I am, but it has changed how I interact with the world.

INVESTING 101Ensuring you Understand Your Portfolio Would you like to gain a better understanding of your investments? A recent study found that 68% of investors say they have at least one challenge to understanding their investments, with the biggest challenge being the need for more financial knowledge (30%) followed by confusion surrounding financial concepts (22%) and the information not being presented clear (21%)1. Many clients do not know what they are invested in or where they should be directing their savings. Finance and investing can be intimidating and overwhelming, with terms like ‘yield’, ‘dividend’, and ‘asset mix’ sounding like a foreign language. I am passionate about teaching my clients and prospective clients the ‘ins and outs’ of investing in a non-intimidating, welcoming environment. For personal advice, please contact:

Brightening the Dark Winter Months: The Role of Companionship in Warding off Seasonal Blues by Dangira Eggo, Vancouver Island Home Support

As the days grow

shorter, many of us find ourselves facing the annual arrival of winter with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation. While the season brings the joys of holidays and cozy nights by the fire, it also ushers in challenges: reduced daylight, chilly weather and a sense of isolation that can sometimes lead to winter blues. This can affect anyone, regardless of age or background, and it's a reminder that our emotional well-being is closely tied to the changing seasons. But, there's a ray of hope that can help us navigate these darker months with a warmer heart – companionship. Whether it's a friendly chat, a helping hand with tasks, a shoulder to lean on or simply someone to share a cup of tea with, the power of companionship can make all the difference in brightening our winter days. Companionship during the winter months has the remarkable ability to chase away the cold and bring warmth to our hearts. It's more than just having someone by your side. It's about bringing out the spark in your life that only human connection can ignite: sharing our stories, honouring lived experiences, reliving memories and creating moments of joy. We've all witnessed the power of a friendly face, a caring conversation or a helping hand that has turned a gloomy winter day into one filled with laughter and light. Companionship can transcend age, gender and circumstance. It's a universal source of comfort, support and connection that can make the winter season truly enjoyable. So, how can we embrace companionship during the winter months? Here are a few simple tips to get you started: Join Local Groups or Clubs. Explore local clubs or groups aligned with your interests to connect with like-minded individuals and forge meaningful bonds. Volunteer. Give back to your community by volunteering for local organizations, fostering connections with those who share your commitment to a common goal. Consider Professional Companionship Services. For additional support and connection, professional companionship services can be a valuable resource. Reach out to experienced caregivers and find a great fit. Initiate Contact With Friends and Family. Proactively reach out to friends and family, extend invitations for gatherings and seek ways to connect. Attend Local Events. Participate in nearby community events, such as festivals or gatherings. Seek out assistance for mobility if necessary. Rekindle Old Friendships. Rediscover the joy of past relationships by reconnecting with old friends through heartfelt

messages or phone calls, strengthening connections from the past. Overcome Barriers to Connection. Challenge yourself to break down barriers that may hinder connections, whether it's shyness, past misunderstandings, or initiating conversations with new acquaintances. Cook and Share. Embrace the coziness of winter cooking by preparing seasonal meals with loved ones, strengthening bonds and creating lasting memories. Let's Remember … companionship can be found in the most unexpected places and with the most unexpected people. It's about building connections and nurturing relationships, one heartfelt moment at a time. This season doesn't have to be a time of isolation. So, bundle up, create togetherness for us and our loved ones, and welcome the dark winter months with open hearts, knowing that companionship is a beacon of light.

Your Off-the-Grid Home Décor Store!

Lilaberry Home Décor: Back in Sidney! by Jamila Douhaibi

This is part of a rotating series of articles about some of the Saanich Peninsula's unique shops and services.

All the same favourites … stop by and say hi! Chris Stephen of Lilaberry Home Décor is back on Beacon. After a short stint of retirement, she's opened her shop of unique treasures and fun finds on the second floor of 2412 Beacon Avenue. She says her cozy wee spot is between Fourth and Fifth Streets on the sunny side of the street and is still offering the same great products, and some new finds as well. Retirement? Well, that's a wrap! "I got bored very quickly; I just missed my connection to Sidney," says Chris. "I missed the searching, the buying and the creative side of decorating my shop. I missed my many loyal customers! Over my 14 years I've made some lovely connections and friends through my business; there is a real social aspect to being in business in such a warm and supportive community. So, I thought if I could find a nice little space so that I could just work part time doing what I love but still have time to spend with my grand-babies, then I would consider giving it a trial period and here I am! "Yes, it's 'off grid' – not the usual place you would think to find a home décor shop, but that's part of the fun and quirkiness of it; seek and ye shall find my cozy little second-floor gift and home décor shop. I'm expanding my search too – Europe has so many gorgeous luxuries and it's even been great to find Canadian made treasures as well. "The Mice are back for an encore appearance! New to Lilaberry for the holiday decorating season: I have Royalty in the shop again, imported from Britain: Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth 'The Royal Jubilee Mouse' with her faithful Corgi; and His Royal Highness King Charles, 'Coronation Mouse.' They are both accompanied by a 'Police Officer Mouse' from Scotland Yard; his name is Bobby and he is of course a kilt-clad 'Scottish Mouse.'" A perfect place for holiday gifts, Chris recommends: • Holiday tablecloths, table runners and cushions from Italy. • Delightful whimsical critters for the tree, handmade and hand painted, from Estonia. • Adorable woodland felt animals that are Made in Nepal. • A stunning collection of three-dimensional Christmas cards that are a gift in themselves, from England. It may be a smaller shop, but Lilaberry Home Décor is still the same not-to-be missed stop for something, or several things, that are fabulous.

New Planner Helps Keep Young Adults Connected to Coast Salish Culture NIȽ TU,O Child and Family Services Society

recently released a new tool to support Coast Salish young adults and community members: the Culture & Care Daily Planner. Designed specifically to meet the needs of young adults, this flexible, undated planner is intentionally designed to provide the user with an immersive and interactive cultural experience. The materials for the Planner draw from the scholarship of renowned knowledge holders and features beautifully illustrated artwork of Coast Salish artists. To help preserve traditional dialects, the Planner is full of phrases and words in SENĆOŦEN, Hul’q’umi’num’ and lək̓ʷəŋən, including greetings, place names and the names of animals from Coast Salish territory. To facilitate deeper learning and preserve oral teaching traditions, users can access recordings of Knowledge Holders speaking via QR codes scattered throughout the Planner, or online at www.niltuo.ca/speak. A comprehensive guide to the 13 W̱SÁNEĆ moons and Hul'q'umi'num’ months also helps users stay in sync with the natural rhythms of Coast Salish life. To help young adults cultivate security, plan for the future and have peace of mind, budgeting tools are provided. A space to set financial goals and a built-in space to summarize spending and savings weekly brings awareness to spending and saving habits. Finally, recognizing that "self-care is not separate from our cultural identity – it is an extension of our commitment to honour our ancestors, culture and future generations" – the Planner features an abundance of self-care activities and health tips, such

as a daily healthy habits tracker, a weekly pause to reflect on self-care, designated spaces to draw and colour, reflections and questions accompanied by journaling opportunities and some helpful resources, such as the number for the KUU-US Crisis Line Society. An emphasis on Care Rooted in Culture encourages users to consider their well-being through the lens of an EN I,SOET ŚELOQ – or, Wellness Wheel. This tool helps young adults assess their level of satisfaction in each of the key wellness areas, including: • ŚW̱ELO₭E, I, ŚĆÁLEĆE (Family and Friends), • S₭O (Significant Other), • ĆELÁṈEN I, SNEPENEḴ (Culture and Tradition), • QENT TŦE S,HELI (Nurturing Spirit), • QENT TŦE S,EȽTÁLṈEW (Physical Health), • IYES I, ȻÍXIU,SEṈ (Fun and Recreation), • ṮOṮEM TŦE SĆȺ (Career Satisfaction), and • QENT TŦE ŚḰÁḰ LEȻEN (Stress Management). This initiative is one small part of NIȽ TU,O's ongoing work to keep Coast Salish children – who have historically been overrepresented in the foster-care system – with their families and in their community by providing culturally-safe programs and services "built on a foundation of our SNEPENEK (teaching) of our SULKWAN (Elders)." NIȽ TU,O is hopeful the planner will serve as a powerful, culturecentred support to young adults moving into their next stage of life. A pdf copy of the planner is now available on the NIȽ TU,O website: https://niltuo.ca/ under resources. DECEMBER 2023 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 85

ENTERTAINMENT THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS: A WINTER WATCH LIST 'Tis the season to indulge in guilt-free binge-watching! As the temperature drops and the holidays approach, there's nothing better than snuggling up in your coziest PJs, curling up on the couch and indulging in great entertainment. To shake things up this month, I'm sharing my tried-and-true winter holiday watch list with the hopes you'll be inspired to embrace the colder weather and hibernate with some fantastic films. Diving into my winter movie marathon must-watch list, we kick off with none other than the Harry Potter series (Crave), a cinematic delight with over 20 hours of wizards, witches and wonder. This cultural phenomenon effortlessly transitions from the enchantment of childhood to the complexity of mature themes, showcasing the filmmakers' dedication to the wizarding world. Whether you're revisiting Hogwarts or embarking on this magical journey for the first time, now is the opportune moment to experience the allure of this series. Once you've worked your way through the world of Harry Potter, why not contine down the rabbit hole with the creative work of Tim Burton? The Nightmare Before Christmas (Disney+) is a classic staple in our household. This 1993 film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloweentown. Bored with his routine, Jack discovers Christmastown and attempts to take over the holiday, leading to chaos. Jack's journey celebrates the spirit of both Halloween and Christmas, creating a timeless treasure! The final pick on my list might raise an eyebrow about its winter theme relevance, and truthfully, I'm not entirely sure myself. Perhaps it's because the first film premiered in December, or maybe it's the blissful "what day is it?" period between Christmas and New Year's that makes committing to the almost nine-and-a-half hours of viewing feel guilt free. But for me, The Lord of The Rings trilogy (Apple TV) is a winter tradition! Directed by Peter Jackson, this film series adapts J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy trilogy – The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. SAFETY PLANNING:

When Home Isn't Safe During the Holidays submitted by Victoria Women's Transition House

Last year, Victoria Women's

Transition House (VWTH) received more than 3,000 calls on our Crisis and Information Line. Many were from women seeking details about how to safely escape from an abusive relationship. Every year the triggers of escalating violence are prevalent around the Holidays. Financial pressures, alcohol, trying to create the "perfect" holiday season and being isolated together for long periods of time can all contribute to a rise in intimate partner violence (IPV) over the holidays. Calls to our Crisis Line often come from women like Gina*. She has been married for 10 years and has experienced abuse from her partner throughout the relationship. Since the birth of their third child, six months ago, there has been an increase in the frequency and severity of the abuse. Gina would like to leave her relationship but is fearful of the impact for her and her young children – emotionally, financially and practically. She was worried and uncertain when she called, wondering where she would live and how she would support herself and her kids. The support worker who answered her Crisis Line call will have assured Gina that her feelings are valid and that resources are available to help: the VWTH Emergency Shelter, Housing Support Worker, Stopping the Violence counselling and Family Law Advocate. For her children, there is help from the PEACE/Children Who Witness Abuse counsellors and lots of other supports. They will have talked about safety planning and a safe exit plan. Safety planning is an integral part of all VWTH programs. It involves identifying steps that a woman can take to increase her safety and helps

provide guidelines to follow if her safety is at risk. Safety Planning is a fluid process that can span from staying safe while living with an abuser, to how to leave their abuser, to how to continue to keep themselves and their children safe once they have left. Research shows that the most dangerous time for a woman in an abusive situation is the point at which she leaves the relationship. The partner may feel he has nothing to lose and lash out – sometimes with violence. For Gina, her safety plan included putting together a "grab and go" bag, contacting a trusted friend to store the bag with her medical and other important documents, calling police if needed, turning off all GPS location settings on her phone and making arrangements for transportation to bring her and the children to the Shelter when the time was right. At the end of her call, Gina said she felt more confident with her next steps and the available supports and resources. The VWTH Crisis and Information Line is available 24 hours a day. No one should feel alone or afraid this holiday season, or at any time. If you, or someone you know, needs support due to an abusive, controlling or violent relationship, please call: 250-385-6611. At Victoria Women's Transition House, women and their children can stay at our Emergency Shelter for up to 30 days and are provided with everything they need to help them feel safe and comfortable: shelter, food, clothing, hygiene supplies, counselling and full access to all the VWTH support programs. Generous donations from the community make these services possible. To donate call 250-592-2927 or visit www.transitionhouse.net. *Name changed for privacy DECEMBER 2023 | SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA 89

FEEDING OUR COMMUNITY:

The Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank by Jamila Douhaibi

In 1984 a few people

on the Saanich Peninsula got together to help others for Christmas, and nearly 40 years later, the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank continues to assist thousands of people with accessing food and other basic supplies every year. Executive Director Bev Elder has been with the food bank for 23 years and says when "people are struggling, that's what we're here for." Many individuals are one paycheque away from needing help to feed themselves and their families. There are often line-ups at the food bank and hundreds of people are using this resource every week. This year, between 1,200 to 1,500 people have been going to the food bank every month. The previous year, Bev says

90 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | DECEMBER 2023

it was closer to 1,000 people each month. With the rising costs of food, housing and utilities, families are often combining households, with children, parents and grandparents all living together. It isn't just families struggling, as seniors are also needing assistance. Bev says that "the loss of a partner is the loss of a pension," and that pandemic assistance has also dried up. But that's where the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank comes in. Bev says that people shouldn't have to choose between food and other necessities, so the food bank provides food as well as personal hygiene products like soap and shampoo. School supplies and snacks are always in high demand and are a few of the things the food bank needs most.

"Anything helps!" says Bev. People who are able to support our community can fundraise, drop donations off at any major grocery store (Save On Foods, Thrifty Foods, Peninsula Co-Op, and Fairway) or directly at the food bank. The food bank is able to buy wholesale, so monetary donations are also greatly appreciated. Or, Bev suggests, if you go to a case lot sale why not buy one for your household and one for the food bank? Basics like soup or beans are always great to have on hand. And with the holidays coming up, people can also get food for hampers. With no government funding, the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank is supported solely by the community and Bev says "our community really supports us and always steps up." When it comes to budgeting, Bev knows that it's really tough and that eating healthy is expensive. Looking at weekly grocery flyers for sales is one of the best ways to save money. See what produce is in season and on sale; there's also sometimes further discounted food when it's close to expiring. Budget beyond the holidays – bills and grocery lists will still be there in January, so it's better to be a bit thrifty and plan ahead. Create a spending limit for gifts, or encourage homemade gifts or experiences, like driving around and looking at lights with hot chocolate, or spending the day playing games and using some of the money saved on treats you wouldn't normally buy. And if you do buy a few gifts and still need some extra help, Bev and the food bank crew are working hard every week to make sure that we don't go hungry. The Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank is located at 9586 Fifth Street, Sidney. Donation hours: Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Food Hamper Distribution: Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Produce PickUp: Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. www.splfoodbank.com

Trending Tips for

Christmas Decorating Can you imagine plowing through the long, dark nights of our northern winter without looking forward to all the excitement around the Christmas holidays? We get dragged through the November rains, and then the days fly by as we hit December and put up cheery outdoor lights, populate our lawns with snow people, reindeer and sleighs, and decorate with fragrant swathes of pine and fir, holly and cedar. We donate to good causes and search for "perfect" gifts. To discover new trends in decorating this Christmas, I went on the prowl to five local businesses.

I first headed south to Patio Gardens, where I was amazed at the amount and variety of beautifully decorated Christmas trees, artisan handmade glass balls from Egypt, plants, adorable gnomes, cards, vintage puzzles, seed ball kits for kids, candles that double as a seed pot, hats and gloves – a treasure house indeed! Owner Natalie Foofat said that ornament trends in recent years have centred around natural materials such as wool mice, round jute balls, macramé, or wood garlands. "They can blend well with any design style from a minimalist Scandinavian style or simplistic modern look to a boho chic vibe." In December, Natalie puts on indoor workshops for creating holiday décor – a Christmas centrepiece, winter planter, or metal holiday orb. "The traditional wreath is what everyone thinks of for outdoor winter décor, but these alternative workshops can add a bit of variety to your home," she says. "The modern metal orb is a great statement piece you can fill with fresh scented greens this winter and then fold up for easy storage until next year." I plan on revisiting Patio Gardens on December 2 for their huge Christmas market; there will be over 70 creative vendors, live music, and food. Next, I dropped in for a delicious lunch and latté at Brentwood Bay Village Empourium. Local artwork is displayed on the walls, and it, too, is full of Christmas treasures – ornaments, scented candles, snuggle socks, mitts, unique cards, glassware, gift bags, string lights, and Christmas-designed gift soaps. Co-owner Alice Bacon says she finds that people feel very personal about their holiday décor. "It's not just about what looks good; there is a really strong pull towards decorations that remind us of our childhood, whether that's a vintage aesthetic or even neon 60s psychedelia. Nostalgia, whether real or imagined, has an incredibly strong role in our holiday celebrations.'' Alice used to decorate windows for Mayfair and other places; the front window is her creation. I headed back to Sidney and Brown's The Florist, which is always a delight for the senses – full of gorgeous flowers and the heavenly scent of fresh greens. Katherine Olmstead, International Master Florist, says that for the 2023-2024 holidays, we will likely see more traditional seasonal décor; classic red and greens create a warm and cozy atmosphere while evoking nostalgia. Rich, bold colours in monochrome and shiny golds and silvers are making their way back. "As you know, the atmosphere is everything during the holidays: easily personalized with fresh evergreen scents, colourful lights, good tunes, treats, and all of the different textures we get to play with." Katherine suggests using warm lighting and natural textures this year, which pair nicely with rustic motifs and handmade decorations. She says that dried flowers and decorations make great additions to holiday decor since they look good well into the new year. Katherine tells us not to take decorating too seriously, and for those with heavy hearts: "Playfulness can be a healing way to enjoy decorating for the holidays while reconnecting with our roots."

Outside of Davidson Chambers Entertaining & Home on Beacon Avenue, Paul Chambers was climbing a ladder to hang a red ribbon-festooned wreath. Looking through the window and then wandering into the store immediately increased my wish list for entertaining decorations from zero to – "I would like one of everything, please!" They are stocked full for the holidays: so many gorgeous dishes, tablecloths, runners, baskets of ornaments and candles, all lovely gifts, all beautifully laid out. Paul was happy to share some of his key ideas for Christmas decorating: 1. Choose a colour palette for the season, stick with the classics (red, green, silver or gold), or go with a more modern look and stick with a range of one colour in different shades. Either way, having a colour palette will make your Christmas decorating flow better, make a stronger statement, and look like you put lots of effort into celebrating the season. 2. Decorate the way you decorate your home throughout the year; if you are a minimalist, stick with that idea for your holiday décor. If you like it full with lots of detail for your everyday look, then continue with that look for the season. 3. Use lots of elements from nature; it adds texture, depth and often a great scent. Use lots of pine branches, garlands, wreaths, and swags; it is classic and can be adapted to your colour palette with the colour of the bow and ribbon. Using faux is completely acceptable these days, as they can look as real as the genuine product, last longer and create way less mess. It's an investment that will last for years. 4. Decorating the outside of your home is equally important and can be the area you transform the most. Have some fun and make the entrance to your home very inviting. Use pine, lanterns lit with candles (real or faux) and carry your colour palette outside as well. 5. Christmas is about food and enjoying it with others. Make the dining room table a reflection again of the seasonal decor that you have chosen. Enjoy using plaids, prints, bold tablecloths, runners, napkins and more. If you have that good family dinnerware, this is the time to use it; make your table a combination of memories from holidays past and your take on this year's holiday decorating. My final stop for the day was a visit to Thrift on Fourth: they have their very own "Christmas Corner." Here is a great place to donate your "tired of" decorations or poke around picking out budget-friendly "new to you" ornaments, puzzles, cookie tins, wraps, and myriad other goodies. The best thing about Beacon Community Services' thrift shop (besides the wonderful work of volunteers) is that all the proceeds are 100% dedicated to local not-for-profit programs and services. I hope you have lots of fun decorating and wish you a heartwarming holiday full of cheerful lights, carol singing, kindness and love. Timeless Tradition:

CFAX Santas Anonymous Society Christmas is a season-filled with wonderment, hopes, A 14-member Board of Directors fervently champions its and jubilation. It's a time when generations of parents come together to celebrate the cherished moments they've created for their children, instilling in them the enchanting tales of Santa Claus and the dreams of long-awaited presents. The spirit of this magical time of year perpetually rekindles in our hearts.

mission: 'Creating a better tomorrow by supporting local

children in need today!' Over the course of 46 years, the Society has touched the lives of thousands of families and has witnessed those once in need now stepping up to give back. Adapting each year, regardless of the challenges, this organization pivots to ensure that every registered child and their family experience the most joyous Christmas memories possible. Rising fuel and food costs, exorbitant housing expenses, and a strained living wage all contribute to the persistence of poverty.

However, for some, the Christmas light doesn't shine as brightly. It becomes a heavy burden, a source of worry, because poverty casts a shadow over the ability to craft enchanting memories for countless families today. Forty-six years ago, Marilyn Cann approached Mel Cooper, the owner of CFAX 1070 radio, with her growing Christmas program, hoping he could assist with the burgeoning demand. It was in that moment that CFAX Santas Anonymous Society was born. Powered by the dedication of over 400 volunteers, accounting for a staggering 95% of its workforce, the Society has earned its place as one of Greater Victoria's most enduring children's charities. It provides much-needed Christmas hampers for families and extends special grants to combat poverty throughout the year.

CFAX Santas Anonymous Society depends entirely on direct donor support, and 2023 presents the greatest need in its history. Striving to assist even more families is an ambitious goal, but it remains out of reach without the unwavering support of our community for the 2,363 registered children eagerly waiting for their own Christmas magic. We invite you to consider making a financial contribution today. Together, we can genuinely create a brighter tomorrow for the local children in need!

Peninsula Panthers

Mid-Season Report Card

The 2023/24 season in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League has now hit the halfway point in the season and Management and Coaches have had ample time to evaluate both the strengths and weaknesses of the Club. The trading deadline is January 10th and in the next 4-5 weeks, each Team will go through an internal process to determine if they will be buyers or sellers. The Peninsula Panthers have had a solid year thus far and they have put themselves into the buyers category as a result. This is the mid-season report card on each of the three positions.

GOAL: “A+” Goaltending has been the strength of the Club. This fact comes as a very pleasant surprise with two 18-year-old rookies comprising the tandem between the pipes. Silas Currie has been a model of consistency each and every start, giving the Cats an opportunity to win every night. He hails from Medicine Hat, Alberta and was added to the Club last February when Panthers owner Pete Zubersky travelled to Big Sky Country to watch Currie play in person in his U-18 post-season. The youngster seemingly has become extremely comfortable on the Peninsula and his numbers are the best in the VIJHL. The other half of the tandem is 18year-old Tanner Ferrill who comes from Campbell River. He did not play goal last season and so the jump to the Junior ranks was significant. Ferrill had a rough start to the season. His first start was in Campbell River against the Storm when he allowed seven goals. He has been solid for the most part after that outing and the Panthers and his numbers are up there with the league-leaders. Currie appears to be a bit ahead of Ferrill but together they form an elite tandem, possibly the best pairing in the League. DEFENCE: “C+” The Club had solid play from their back end however in October they ran into a major issue with injuries. The quiet, physical and dependable Reid Fryer took an illegal hit in a home game behind his own net and although there was an injury to his knee, he walked out of the rink that night with a limp. The next day it was determined that the injury was significant and may require surgery and Fryer could be out until the last couple weeks of the season or perhaps for the year. The 20-year-old is in his final season of Junior Hockey and this turn of events has taken its toll on both the player and the Club. Jason Sekulich, the 17-year-old rookie looked like he was starting to fit in nicely with the Club however he was

injured in an October 25th game up in Port Alberni against the Bombers and only started to lightly skate a month later. Captain and 20-year-old Evan Crawford has been solid in his 4th and final year with the Panthers and he will play a huge roll in any success the Club has moving forward. Robson Scott is another 20-year-old and Panthers brass is still hoping and believes that he could be a major impact on the defensive corps. Scott is big and when he plays his size, he adds significantly. The Club would like to see more of this type of play from him. Eighteen-year-old rookie Risto Ringma has been the biggest surprise of this group. He has put a few points up on the board but plays significant minutes each night and is right there at the top of the pecking order. Ringma is physical. The other two 18-year-old rookies are Colton Trotter and Gavin Mowat. Trotter started slow but is getting better every game. Mowat has been an enigma. He has the size, talent and toolsf to be a top level rear guard but it has not yet translated into game action. Injuries have kept this group from achieving a higher rating.

FORWARDS: “B-” Injuries have played a part in the rating of this group as well. A couple of the 20-year-olds in Ryan Grambart and Julien Phillips have done their part. Grambart started slow but is putting numbers up on the board as of late. Phillips has worked on his conditioning and it is paying dividends. Ethan Lingard and Luka Jansen van Rensburg are having a solid year but they have the ability to be right up their with the best in the League. Rowan Cairns was acquired in a deal a number of games into the season and he might have as much touch as anyone. His work ethic needs some work and if this comes around, he will be a force. Malcolm Fletcher seems to have figured things out. He is not the fastest skater on the sheet but goes to the net and it has translated into pucks in the net. Rookie Lukas Preweda has also found the scoring touch but he would be more of a complete player being stronger in his own end and competing every shift. Carson Harris is the most exciting player on the squad but he missed five weeks after being injured in October. Ben Swan is a youngster who is still figuring things out but is going to be a good one. Cam Sneek, Brad Bates, Charlie Williams and Jordan Campbell have been impactful as of late. Tristan Rosenblood is impactful when he uses his speed. Ahron Calalay has significant talent but needs to add grit to his game.

Last Word from the Editor-in-Chief Allison Smith “34 Days Until Christmas,” the sign at the bottom of the stairs announced to me this morning. 34 days until Christmas – over a month! – and yet all around me I see signs that the holiday spirit has arrived early. My house is already decorated. Normally I wait for a couple more weeks, but we leave for Mexico on December 2 and I’d rather come home without this task still on my holiday to-do list. But even though my house is all "Christmassed-up" only out of necessity, I'm eagerly anticipating the upcoming season, and I'm not the only one! On a late night walk with my dog, the glow of Christmas lights from many different houses makes a flashlight unnecessary. Stores of course are busy, as they usually are at this time of year, but the shoppers just seem friendlier, a little more willing to let the person behind them go first or chat happily with other customers while they patiently await their turn in line. It’s hard to put my finger on what it is, exactly, but there just seems to be a little something different in the air a little earlier this year. In the depths of Covid as we all faced a holiday season without family and friends by our side, there was a knock on my door one night. On the other side was my sister, brother-in-law and two nieces. They’d hopped on the ferry from Vancouver just to pop by our and my mom’s house, with a special message for us in a time of sadness and uncertainty. Have you seen the movie Love Actually? Much like that iconic scene, my sister and her family played a quiet carol while they held up pieces of Bristol board on which they’d written their wishes for a better Christmas the following year. I stood there with tears in my eyes, fighting the urge to hug them all, but with a bit of holiday magic restored in my heart. Perhaps the reason Christmas cheer seems to have come early is that we've had a period of isolation and are longing for the connection we had before Covid entered our lives. This year feels like the first Christmas in a while that will be … normal. The way it used to be. And that feels like the most magical thing of all. The most wonderful time of the year, indeed.
