The September meeting of Sker WI was held recently in St David’s hall, Nottage. Vice president Rosalie Hopper welcomed members after the summer break. After the formal business had been completed the speaker for the evening was Mr Wayne Warlow who gave a very interesting talk on dance bands and had members singing along to various old time tunes. Dance bands have been around for a long time, starting with waltzes then progressing to jazz in the 1900s then continuing with ragtime and the blues. Woody

Porthcawl Townswomen Our chairman Dee Richardson welcomed all to our Harvest Jubilee meeting and from the start we could see that it was going to be a very colourful afternoon. Everyone had got into the spirit of the Jubilee and there was a sea of red white and blue. We also had a lovely surprise as our chairman had brought into the meeting the Olympic torch which her son Simon, Olympic gold medallist, had used to light the flame in Cardiff. Our thoughts were with our vice chairman Shirley Masterman who had suffered a heart attack recently and sadly

Herman, Artie Shaw and Glen Miller were some of the American bands. Joe Loss, Billy Cotton and Bert Ambrose were British bands. Most dance halls in the 1960s had a live band on every weekend. Victor Silvester was the best known band for ballroom dancing. With the coming of rock-n-roll the big bands have taken a back seat. The bowls team did well in the recent competition and come second - well done. The next meeting will be on Thursday 11th October at 7pm, the speaker will be Mrs Barbara Donovan on ‘A year in China’. ANN VIPOND

would miss all the fun of the meeting, but news that she was making a good recovery was welcomed. A very enjoyable day was had at the recent visit to Dewstow Gardens with beautiful weather. The annual coffee morning was held at the Atlantic Hotel and raised £200 for the Mayors Civic fund and we thank all who attended. Our next meeting will be on 10th October when we will be entertained by Mr John Hanson who will be explaining the reasons why we need to send refurbished tools to Africa. This will be at 2pm in All Saints Church hall and all will be made very welcome. FREDA RODGER
