LETTERS DONATION TO PARKINSONS SOCIETY

Dear Editor, I should be grateful if this photo could be included in the next edition of Seaside News. It shows the Chairman of Bridgend Lions Welfare Committee and members donating a cheque in the sum of £500 to the Parkinsons Society Treasurer Julia Phillips and Volunteer Anne King at Llys Faen, Bridgend where a cordial welcome was received. Many thanks in kind anticipation. C Thomas, Bridgend

PORTHCAWL TRUCK SHOW CHARITY DONATIONS

Dear Editor, The latest Porthcawl Truck Show, held at Sandy Bay Porthcawl, raised £15,000 for the Sir Gareth Edwards Cancer Charity, and also £1,500 for The Gareth Thomas charity. The cheques were presented at the Hi-Tide recently. Thanks to all those that helped organize the event and to those that so kindly donated. Cllr Brian Jones, Porthcawl

IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE Dear Editor, As we enter into an important election year, I’d like to urge our local and national politicians to resist using the tawdry electioneering tactics of recent years. As we know from Britain and across the world, employing populism and wedge issues can lead to unstable governments and people who lack the skills to govern effectively. It’s time for change. Our country needs stability, with a focus on solution-based approaches, and I urge readers to vote for those who offer positive, proactive measures rather than cheap populist sound bites. Mark Worrall, Porthcawl

DISABLED NOT WELCOME!

BANNING OF CHICKENS

Dear Editor, On my latest visit to Porthcawl seafront I must admit to being utterly shocked to see that ‘kerb bars’ have been added to the double yellow lines along the seaward side of the Esplanade and West Drive in front of the Seabank Hotel. A dozen or more easy parking spaces for the disabled have been eliminated. Clearly, BCBC have decided to ban easy access to that part of the front from disabled residents and visitors - the availability of which has made our lives easier for decades. It’s not as if there’s any severe traffic problems of any kind at that spot. One could understand the application of ‘kerb bars’ on the landward side of that area as it is the ‘blind side’ of a curve but to apply them on the seaward side and block easy access for the disabled on to the promenade is being seen as cruel and spiteful. Clearly, the authorities DO NOT WELCOME the disabled to Porthcawl. Clearly, the alternative is for the disabled to be forced to hike through or around the town from Salt Lake or Portway car parks and for those who are aged, infirm and challenged in many other ways that is rarely possible. Not all disabled people have electric wheelchairs. Even the couple of available spots at the seaward end of Esplanade Avenue have been eliminated. Surely - a couple of dedicated disabled bays could have been allowed opposite the bus parking area. Apart from coming across as cruel and spiteful the general consensus being heard from both disabled and the fit and healthy is that BCBC now openly display prejudice and discrimination toward the disabled. Shame on you - shame on all of you. Easier access to this section of both Porthcawl seafront and its facilities has been removed without thought or consideration toward those who rely on it. It seems incredibly crass. Even local businesses are saying they can see a drop in their trade coming in the not too distant future. What BCBC refuse to acknowledge is that it’s not just the need for ‘new structures’ that make up Porthcawl - it’s people too and that should include the disabled. One hopes that local residents, both abled and disabled, will know what to do when councillors seek their votes. The application of those ‘kerb bars’ where they are will effectively achieve nothing other than to make the lives of the disabled and their carers even more miserable. Thank you BCBC. Lynne Hendra, Port Talbot

Dear Editor, I am a plot holder at New Road allotments and have been given an agreement to sign which states: no chickens are allowed on this site, although chickens have been on the site for 20 years or more. As from 31st January 2024 the council are to ban chickens from the site. In your November 2023 issue you reported that BCBC are to give 26 plot holders in Kenfig Hill chickens coups, as well as other useful items. Councils up and down the country are helping allotment holders fend for themselves in the light of food shortages and the increase in food banks nationwide. Well done BCBC. Porthcawl Town Council couldn’t care less about the increasing poverty going on around them. So why are Porthcawl Town Council banning chickens when it goes against the 1950s NAS agreement stating that the banning of chickens was abolished and it is the right of plot holders to keep chickens? This council is adamant that that’s their decision and no consultation is going to change their minds. People fought for the right to keep chickens and for over 70 years this has been the agreement, but now Porthcawl Town Council, in their wisdom, are trashing that hard fought for right. Surely something must be done to overturn this ridiculous decision? There has never been an issue or complaint with the chickens on this site. One Councillor is citing noise pollution as an excuse, when you have constant noise from the fair ground and the high tide letting off fireworks on a regular basis. What a ridiculous suggestion that a few chickens are noisier. Come on plot holders, fight for what’s your right. Rob Morse, Porthcawl

PROPERTY CONFIDENCE RETURNING TO UK HOUSING MARKET AS ASKING PRICES RISE According to the latest Rightmove House Price Index there was a notable surge in the UK housing market as the average new seller asking prices experienced a month-on-month increase of 1.3%, amounting to £4,571. This marks the most significant December to January price rise since 2020. Despite this, average prices remain 0.7% lower than the same period last year. The first week of 2024 displayed promising activity, surpassing the previous year’s performance. Both prospective buyers and sellers exhibited increased confidence, initiating their moving plans early in the year. The data indicates a 15% rise in new properties entering the market for sale compared to the same period in the previous year. Additionally, buyer demand in the first week of 2024 increased by 5% compared to the same period last year. Despite the positive trends, competitive pricing from sellers remains crucial, as the number of new properties entering the market outpaces the rise in demand. However, the number of sales agreed is notably higher, showing a 20% increase compared to the first week of the previous year. This suggests a strong return of buyer confidence, especially when contrasted with the unsettled post-mini-Budget period from a year ago. Since Christmas, Rightmove claim that they observed nine of its ten busiest days on record for individuals seeking a Mortgage in Principle to assess their borrowing capacity—an early sign of

individuals actively planning their moves for 2024. The average five-year mortgage rate has decreased to 4.86%, compared to the peak of 6.11% in July 2023. While uncertainties may persist, early indicators hint at a more stable year for the mortgage market after experiencing volatility since September 2022 which can only be positive for house buyers and sellers alike. Nonetheless, it remains crucial for sellers to exercise caution and avoid excessive optimism when establishing their asking price expectations. This caution is warranted due to the ongoing strain on buyer spending power caused by raised inflation and the cost of living. Therefore the pivotal factor for success among sellers in 2024 lies in adopting accurate and realistic pricing and ensuring a proactive tailored marketing strategy. ARTS CÔR BRO OGWR: A CEREMONY OF CAROLS!

This is a great time for new members to come along and join us. Why not pop along to Alington Road Church on either a Tuesday or Friday at 7:00 pm. There’s no audition and no pressure. We’ll guarantee you’ll have a great time. On a final note, we’re very saddened to announce the passing of Fred Draper, a long serving member of the choir. Fred was a stalwart of the bass section and a wonderful character. He will be greatly missed by all. Our thoughts go out to his family. Email: contact@pothcawlmalechoir.co.uk Or Ian Williams 07927 219544

STAG’S WORLD OF ROCK

Côr Bro Ogwr’s Christmas concert took place on the 16th December, at All Saints’ Church, Porthcawl. Against the festive background of Christmas trees from the Rotary Club’s annual festival, the choir performed a rich and varied programme of Christmas music under the energetic baton of the its talented musical director, Ben Pinnow. The centrepiece of the concert was Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols, a dramatic work, first performed in London in 1943; the choir did full justice to this piece, powerfully conveying the complex sentiments embedded in the Christmas story. There were also opportunities, as always, for the audience to join in some favourite carols which the packed church did with gusto! The choir was accompanied by Angharad Edwards on harp and Laura Deenik on piano, with solo parts sung beautifully by members of the choir: Helen Lewis (Soprano) and Meinir Davies (Alto) Côr Bro Ogwr is always eager to welcome new singers. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings, 7.00 - 9.00 pm in Tabernacle Church, Bridgend. Visit our website: www.cor-bro-ogwr.com or just come along to a Wednesday evening rehearsal. We are currently rehearsing works by Mozart and Haydn for our spring concert on 13th April. Judith Fabian

Well, this year hasn’t had a good start. I must begin by mentioning the passing of rugby legend, Bridgend’s J.P.R. Williams. There’s no doubting he was the greatest ever fullback, and also a talented tennis player. However, he was a keen runner too. After I formed “The Cornelly Striders” in 1980, we organised a 10K road race. I gave J.P.R. a phone call and he came down and ran and had a pint with us in “The Pondarosa” after the race. A giant of a man, never forgotten! Sadly, on the local music front, we’ve lost Kenfig Hill guitarist Brian Burke, who used to perform with Tron’s band, while Porthcawl bassist “Mitch” has also passed away. Mitch played in various bands with his best mates Mark and Phil Jones before moving to England. Top band Magnum has lost guitarist/ songwriter Tony Clarkin after a short illness. Magnum was a big influence on my career and I don’t think the band will carry on any more. My song-writing partner Dale was recently over from the Czech Republic – I had planned to play a few songs with him in one of our local jams, but I got struck down with another bug. Hopefully he’s back in July so I’ll get rehearsing! Stag Marks 07549 728356 Photo: Dale and Stag

COR TABERNACL NEWS

Following a very busy festive season, we’ve now recommenced rehearsals. We are honoured to be singing at the 100-year anniversary of the British Legion on the 28th of January at All Saints church. Following that our next major concert will be on Saint David’s Day, also at All Saints church. Further details to follow. We’ve had several enquiries for weddings and hope they translate to bookings. If anyone wants to make their wedding an even more memorable one, for family and guests alike, why don’t you contact us to obtain details. We’re always happy for those interested to come along and see us rehearse. 24 | seaside news

December 2023 was a busy month for the members of Cor Tabernacl, Bridgend. The choir was invited to sing at Ysgol Llanhari in a community event with local school choirs, followed by the Christmas concert at Tabernacle. Joined by the pupils of Pencoed Primary School who really shone with their young voices and enthusiasm, both choirs joined to sing The Snowman as a finale. This was a successful charity event; along with our annual carol singing effort at MacArthur Glen, with Guide Dogs Cymru and Shelter Cymru benefitting from £500 each in donations. The choir finished off their Christmas singing by entertaining diners at Corvo Lounge. In March we welcome Chorale du Lac from our Twin Town of Villenave d’Ornon. A group of 26 delegates will stay with local families for the weekend sharing rugby, music and meals. A concert will be held on March 8th at Tabernacle Chapel, when we will be joined by a talented young violinist Sage Taylor as our soloist.

Email your article info@seasidenews.co.uk On Sunday, May 19th the choir will perform Rutter’s Requiem at their annual orchestral concert. New members welcome, rehearsing each Tuesday 7-8.45pm at the chapel. Contact numbers are Dr. Richard Logan (Chairman) 07582257033 and Mrs Anne Kendall (Secretary) 07777610999.

Following my article in last month’s Seaside News, it seems that I am not the only one who appreciates old films, because I received correspondence from another enthusiast who shared my thoughts on the subject. Of course, a film is not good simply because it comes from another era – there were a lot of entirely forgettable productions from the 1930s to the 1950s, but the best examples seem to convey so much more in their story-telling than is even remotely possible in today’s cinema. Why is that? It cannot simply be a matter of nostalgia, seeing an age on the screen that has gone forever, although I believe that does add a sense of excitement and fascination. The fact is, there were some very good screenwriters in those days, and Emeric Pressburger is an example of a superlative writer who could conjure up magic in his screenplays which Michael Powell, the other half of the production partnership, had the audacity to put on to the screen with an almost ethereal quality, something that few other directors could achieve. What a shame that these classic films are not rereleased in the cinema, if only for a more discerning audience. Anthony Hontoir Downwood Films Tel: 07510 934299 Photo: Anthony Hontoir

POEMS MUSEUM LIFE

SAVE THE HEAT

Surrounded by history Artefacts full of mystery Lapping up museum life Handling with care we forever strife Vintage armour used in battle Centuries old antiques with stories to baffle Delving into research about a WW1 soldier Bringing the past to life as we get closer Legends to discover, answers to unlock Discovering ways to turn back the clock Dressing up in civil war attire A king beheaded once announced the town crier Recalling what once was ordinary Past wartime relics now legendary Learning the names of military weaponry Observing them alter century by century Hero’s and villains who paved our past Events that memory will forever last As history echoes its invaluable charm It stays alive although our weapons disarm. Miss Tuesday Turner, Bridgend

Stay in bed and save the heat Snow is forecast for this week Much too cold to get around Ice has formed upon the ground Still Feel the cold upon my feet Get up when I feel stronger Why does every day feel longer? Sitting huddled in the cold, Is what it means by getting old? Still Feel the cold upon my feet Heating bills are far too high. It really makes me want to cry. Can’t watch TV, I’ve no licence fee. But I don’t watch the BBC? Still Feel the cold upon my feet Joints that hurt and bones that creak Lying here I just feel weak. Feeling Poorly and all alone No visitors ever in my home Still Feel the cold upon my feet Pension spent for this week. Barely have enough to eat Rent is due and bills to pay Leave it go another day Still Feel the cold upon my feet Take my pills now don’t delay Did I take them yesterday? What’s today, I just can’t say Every day’s the same to me Still Feel the cold upon my feet Someone banging on the door, Handheld out demanding more Truth is I just can’t Pay Stay in bed till they go away Still Feel the cold upon my feet Why couldn’t it be like it used to be When I had someone who cared for me Now my life’s filled with despair. There’s no one left to care. Still Feel the cold upon my feet It used to be such a happy home Now I’m left here on my own Struggling to make ends meet. Just go without, don’t have no treat. Still Feel the cold upon my feet Had a letter yesterday. Eviction notices on the way Close my eyes and try to sleep Feel the tears as I start to weep Still Feel the cold upon my feet I feel the warmth, but shiver with cold Pull the blanket above my head Only solace stay in bed Welcome the darkness I used to dread Still Feel the cold upon my feet Bill Lenihan, Porthcawl

NEVER GIVE UP I open my eyes and it’s dark, All I can see is this inky blackness, Everywhere I turn, And I feel so cold, so very cold. I can’t move, my limbs are stiff, All I can hear is the steady beat of my heart, It feels heavy and I feel all alone. If this is death I don’t like it, I don’t want it. I call out but my voice is so croaky, I am weak, I am tired.... But I don’t want to be here, So I call again, and I wait. I try to remember good things, But the cloak of despair is heavy, The inky blackness too strong. But I am not going to give up.... Then I see it, a tiny star, Flickering in the sea of blackness. And I watch, and I wait, and I hope.... As it grows I start to feel lighter, warmer. As this brightness gets closer, I hear a faint rustle in the air, I smell the fragrance of beautiful flowers, And then suddenly I am engulfed in whiteness, I can feel the power and softness of the wings, As I am lifted into the arms of an Angel. The cloak of despair falls away. Marilyn Cook, Bridgend

GROWING OLD TOGETHER Our bones give a creak as we struggle from bed, We often forget the odd things that we’ve said. Good times that we shared in years gone past, When the time we had seemed oh so vast. Your turn to make tea or is it me? And where did I leave those blasted keys? My phone’s gone again, please give me a call, Searching for that drives me right up the wall. Memories failing, thoughts rush from my head, Now what was it again that I just said? We think back to days when we were young, Mediterranean holidays in the scorching Sun. The joyous sounds of the children’s songs, All the people we love who’ve now passed on. We gaze at photos of our wedding day, Then our hair was dark, not fifty shades of grey. Our figures slim and teeth snow white, Getting old is a war that nobody can fight. We do our best, we walk the dog, Crosswords and quizzes oil our rusty old cogs. The children grew up, went their separate ways, To live their own lives and earn their own pay. The house seems empty now that they’ve gone, But their echoing laughter still lingers on. We hope they listen as they hear us say, Time rushes by, make the most of each day. Our grandchildren buzz round like so many bees, When they finally head home we’re both on our knees. Give us a kiss my sweet, it’s time to go, But come back soon, for we do love you so. The benefits are there for all to see, An old fogey’s bus pass for both you and for me. And our dental checks are now for free, If only we still had a few more of our teeth. Our income doesn’t stretch quite so far,

Email us your poem info@seasidenews.co.uk

But through it all I have to say, I wouldn’t change one single day. The time we’ve had has been so good, We’d repeat it again if only we could. I dream of you, the times that we’ve shared, And know through it all that you loved and you cared. Thank God for each day, everything that we’ve got, When we add it all up it’s really a lot. Make each minute count is what we must do, Treasure them all and enjoy each one too. John Coutanche, Porthcawl

THE SOCIAL MEDIA BLUES

If no-one comments, I feel ill. No “problem halved” on my lap-top; Especially if the likes all stop! “Physician heal thyself”, you say, If reading this with some dismay. But it isn’t only me, Who suffers this anxiety. Remember now with no “lockdown”. Let’s get together in our town. It’s good to talk, when face to face, Not into the ether’s cyberspace! Wilfy Edwards, Porthcawl

ABERAERON Beckoned by the nights fuswore Waves whip along the shore Supine rain and winds that bite A riotous concert fills the night Harboured in the master’s shelter Beer and warmth we snub to skelter Into gloves, coats, boots and more Then race ungainly to the door Incredulous, locals turn to stare Why should they want to go out there Unfettered by these rational doubts We down our pints and scurry out

When trying to connect we find, A different version of man-kind; To childhood’s energetic spark, When we would gather in the park.

Engulfed within the weather’s dance We shout above the roar and prance Dodging waves though why we care When rain’s soaked through to dress and hair

But why then, when upon my phone, I write, I still feel so alone? No game I play, or party host, within a social media post. But worse to follow than this still,

Finally, excitement spent Bedraggled, dripping, home we went Hoping tomorrow’s forecast’s rain So we can do the same again Janet Verrells, Porthcawl

SCHOOLS THE BURROWS NURSERY Its a New Year at The Burrows after a busy 2023. We said goodbye to 40 children who left for full time school last September. There is no need to worry about part time school hours when your child attends The Burrows Nursery. Many of our children take up the Childcare Offer and the Education grant, giving 30hrs per week funded childcare. You can apply for the grants, the term after your child turns 3, up until the Easter term. We follow the new Wales curriculum, but unlike part time school, we spend a lot of our time on daily walks around our beautiful neighbourhood. We can often be seen at the local park and the beach is a 10 minute walk away. Our nursery is divided into separate units including a baby room, 2 toddler rooms and pre-school. We also offer the wrap around care that working families need, before and after school. Holiday club is offered until 4pm or 6pm, with a lunch provided. Weather permitting, we take the children on trips to Margam Park, St Fagons, Bryngarw Park to name but a few. We follow a healthy schools menu, serving delicious home cooked meals. Blwyddyn Newydd Dda! We are very excited to welcome back our learners in 2024. A busy term is already underway! We have been celebrating ‘Yr Hen Galan’, which is the old Welsh New Year. Many traditions are associated with this celebration which is held on 13th January. One of these is ‘Y Fari Lwyd’. A horse’s skull is covered in a white sheet, decorated with ribbons and bells and taken from door to door by a group of people. They will knock on doors and sing a song asking to be welcomed in. The people inside sing a verse back saying whether they may enter or not! Another tradition is to create a ‘Perllan’.

Email us your report to: info@seasidenews.co.uk This is an apple filled with cloves, evergreen leaves and with sticks as ‘legs’ to help it stand. Children would carry these and sing songs before midday on 13th January and they would be given gifts or money in return. Both the Mari Lwyd and Perllan are said to bring good luck for the year to come. Pre-nursery leaners have started this January, with room for more in April. If you would like further details on Welsh-medium education, contact 01656 754865 or admin@yfos.pen-y-bont.cymru.

Nippers are aged between 7-13. As a Nipper, your child will be taught surf safety, first aid, surf and beach sports such as wading, surf swimming, board paddling, beach flags, beach sprints and relays.

Our Youth section is between the age of 13-18. During the summer months we train at Rest Bay beach, and also at Pyle Swimming pool throughout the year. Our focus is to teach our youth how to save lives.

I shall start by expressing my sincere thanks to everyone involved in our school production of ‘Jekyll & Hyde the Musical’ at the Grand Pavilion. It was the 45th production in our school history and it goes without saying we are already looking forward to next year! To the pupils and staff, your work ethic, talent, and commitment is something to behold – I am in awe! I know all who attended will agree, it was quite simply outstanding! Thanks to Dan Minto who took the photographs. We have recently started our Sixth Form options process, and it is pleasing to learn that around 150+ students will be joining us in September. Year 9 have also started to make their options choices too. In January, Year 10 completed their Unit 1 GCSE English Literature examination and Year 11 received their GCSE Mathematics results. Well done to both year groups. A special mention is needed to our Year 11 students who performed so incredibly well in their Mathematics examination – excellent performance! There has been a lot of sport and extra-curricular activities taking place – too much to capture in one article! Most recently our U15 Rugby Team won the Ospreys Cup for the third year in a row and now defend the Welsh Cup as reigning Champions – good luck! We are currently preparing for our Junior and Senior Eisteddfod and we look forward to this celebration later this term. Mr Stephens, Head Teacher

Lots of youth members also like to compete in regional, national and international competitions. Our youth section also train to become Lifeguards and carry out voluntary patrols as part of our training programme. Our aim is to provide the lifeguards of tomorrow with training to help keep themselves and others safe whilst enjoying our wonderful beaches.

WELCOME NEW SUPPORT FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE VICTIMS When I was first elected, I made the safety of women one of my main priorities. So I was delighted to hear about a new flexible fund from the UK Government to support the victims of domestic abuse. As part of its Domestic Abuse plan, supported by a £230m investment, the government has introduced “lifeline payments” of up to £500 designed to tide people over the first few days after they flee to buy essentials like food and toiletries. Additional grants of up to £2500 are also available which can be used as a deposit for new accommodation away from the abuser. These are available via 470 different support services. Research has shown that women needing to hide from an abuser are deterred by lack of money, fears about their children and fear of reprisal. These often keep women locked into dangerous relationships for far too long. The government also passed a landmark Domestic Abuse Act in 2021 which created criminal offences of non-fatal strangulation, stalking, revenge porn and coercive control. Women who leave abusive partners and who receive Universal Credit are now eligible for legal aid in order to seek Protection Orders against attackers. JAMIE WALLIS MP for Bridgend

FREE CHILDCARE PROGRAMME EXPANDS Children aged two to three who live in the Cefn Cribwr, Pyle, Cornelly and Kenfig Hill areas are now eligible to benefit from free childcare provision as part of the Flying Start initiative. Funded by Welsh Government, the scheme is designed to support families by offering childcare settings that also incorporate an intensive health visiting service, parenting advice and support for early literacy, speech, language and communication development. It provides eligible children with up to 12 and a half hours of free childcare each week during term-time. Research has revealed that regular attendance can lead to significantly improved health and educational outcomes for early years children, and helps them to develop essential life skills. Flying Start helps prepare young children so that by the time they start school, they have all the abilities and confidence they need to start learning and socialising alongside other children. The scheme can also help families to access additional support, and ensures that parents and carers are fully informed on how they can help their children to develop their full potential. Registration for the new Flying Start schemes is open, and you can find out more and register your children for a place by emailing flyingstartexpansion@bridgend.gov.uk. DIFFICULT CHOICES FOR 2024-25 BUDGET

PORTHCAWL CONCERNS RAISED WITH COUNCIL

Across the UK, councils are setting their budgets for 2024-25 amid the most difficult financial pressures we have ever faced. Food and energy bills for public buildings such as schools and day care centres have risen, higher numbers of vulnerable children and adults now require essential care and support, and councils have to meet the additional cost of salary and pension increases for teachers and other staff. The cost of materials for works ranging from constructing new schools or maintaining existing infrastructure such as highways have all significantly increased, we have seen a 237% increase in demand for homeless accommodation, and costs for hometo-school-transport alone have risen by a huge £3.7m. After 13 years of dealing with reduced funding, austerity, Brexit, the global pandemic, increased costs, additional customer demand and the ongoing cost of living crisis, it is now impossible to protect people from experiencing the full impact of cuts across the 800 services we provide. For 2024-25, we are proposing to save £16m through internal efficiencies, reducing or changing services, increasing fees and charges, and raising council tax. To help explain this clearly and in more detail, we’ve established a dedicated budget webpage – you can find out more at www.bridgend.gov.uk

I have written to BCBC chief executive Mark Shephard to inform him of all the issues and concerns raised by Porthcawl residents at the public meeting I organised recently. It is a long list, which he has promised to address. The overriding issue for most was what they perceived to be a lack of consultation on the various plans and strategies for the town. People felt either that they were not consulted at all or that, if they were, their views were ignored. There was a general belief that the council makes its mind up about what it wants to do before consulting residents rather than waiting to hear what locals think first. I have also separately contacted Welsh Water to raise other concerns brought up the meeting about wastewater and sewage capacity in the town. Residents are worried about whether the drainage and sewerage system would be able to cope with the effluent created by an extra 3,000 or 4,000 people who will move into the 1200 new homes being proposed by the council. Sewage pollution of our seas and rivers is now a major environmental concern. Welsh Water has to address any issues relating to capacity in Porthcawl.

LOOKING AFTER PEOPLE AS A COMMUNITY I cannot empathise enough how difficult the budget setting process is for 2024-25, especially as vital social care and wellbeing services are among the financial pressures that the council must deal with. This is mainly due to huge increases in demand for children’s social care, services for people with learning disabilities and independent residential placements for younger and older people, and also because an ageing population requires greater care. As latest projections suggest that this situation is going to create a £12.5m overspend, we need to come together and take a fresh new look at how we can collectively support people in future – not just through local authority services, but as a community, living and working alongside one another. We must consider new ways of becoming more resilient and dependent, and new solutions for ensuring the care and wellbeing of local people - without major changes or additional funding, the current system is not going to be sustainable in the long run. One thing that does remain very apparent is that children do far better within foster settings, so I hope that more people will consider this as we move further into 2024 – visit the fostering pages at www.bridgend.gov.uk for more details.

KENFIG CORPORATION TRUST CHARITY CHURCHES TOGETHER IN PORTHCAWL COMMISSION REPORT

Following complaints to the Charity Commission (the Regulatory Body for charities) about the appointment of trustees, and about the legality of the Trust introducing car parking charges at Kenfig, the Commission has thoroughly investigated the complaints in conjunction with the Trustees, and has come to the following conclusions: ‘ …the trustees have rectified the appointment of (existing trustees) and have recruited new trustees as per our advice. The information provided gives re-assurance that the charity has acted on advice provided by the Commission to ensure that these appointments were in accordance with the charity’s governing document’ ‘We have further received … the necessary assurances to conclude that the charity has considered the appropriate resolutions regarding meetings via electronic means and changes to the number of trustees’ Concerning the car parking, the Charity Commission concludes that: ‘…The charity owns the freehold land on which the car park is situated…. There are no conditions/clauses in the Land Registry title documents or the charity’s governing document which prevent the current arrangements for the car park’ ‘…There is nothing in the general law relating to common land, or in the Order of Limitations dated 13th June 2001… which prevents the trustees operating the car park’ The Commission has now closed the case.

PORTHCAWL COMMUNITY CHORUS The Porthcawl Community Chorus has been established since October 2023. It meets at Gilgal Church Hall, Park Avenue on Tuesdays from 1.30pm to 2.45pm. There are no auditions. The only criterion is to have a desire to sing with others. Singing is a great way to lift your spirit and is known to positively benefit both physical and mental health. During the sessions a variety of musical styles are sung. If you come along you are sure to get a warm, friendly welcome and if you are able to stay longer after the rehearsal you can enjoy a cuppa and a chat. So why not give it a try? Why not tell others? If you would like more information, please contact Maggie Jemmett: e – maggie.jemmett@live.co.uk; t – 07932793355; or just turn up!

Thank you to all those who took part in, and contributed to the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in January. Activities included a short service at Trinity, a Unity Service at Our Lady Star of the Sea, a Reflection at Tabernacl, and a Soup Lunch at All Saints. A wonderful time of fellowship; Christians of all backgrounds coming together to pray, worship and consider how we can all make a difference to those in need. Coney Beach Litter Pick Our next litter pick, in partnership with Sustainable Wales, will be on Wednesday 21st February – do join us. Meet outside the Sussed shop (James St CF36 3BG), at 12.00pm. We usually go for coffee afterwards – all are welcome. If you can’t make it this time, do email markworrall90@gmail. com to be added to the mailing list for future picks. AGM & Talk from Welsh Water The release of sewage into the sea off Coney Beach and Rest Bay is of concern to us all. A recent conversation with a manager from Welsh Water gave us an insight into the challenges of managing our local infrastructure – so we’ve invited him to speak at our AGM this year. The meeting will be at the YMCA (John Street) on Thursday 22nd February at 7pm. Do join us, learn about the current situation and engage with the debate about how we improve things for the future. Refreshments served; all are welcome. Gyda phob bendith / Every blessing, Mark Worrall

THROUGH CHRISTIAN EYES What is love? The bible says ‘God is Love’, and He loves you! In the original Greek language of the New Testament the bible uses a special word for God’s love for us ‘Agape’. It is a difficult word to translate into English but one meaning is that of a godly giving love that we may describe as ‘Compassion’. God has compassion towards us, that motivation to relieve our hardships and sufferings by entering into our suffering with us. The Apostle Paul describes it in this way: ‘God demonstrates his own love for us in this; while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”(Romans 5:8). Amazing, self-giving love to pay for our sin and reconcile us to Himself. This month, whether or not you get a Valentine card, flowers, chocolates or some other gift, remember – You are loved, God loves you! Will you receive or reject His love? Love is not complete until it is returned. So our loving God seeks from us that we will love Him too. If you would like to know more about God’s love for you, or about the Christian faith, please check us out on social media or contact me on 01656 771168. Rev. Martin Gillard BD MA Gilgal Baptist Church, Porthcawl

ENJOYMENT AT THE PORTHCAWL STROKE CLUB The Porthcawl Stroke Club would like to share with you, our Christmas celebrations at the Grove Golf Club and a surprise for Mrs Pat Richards on her 80th birthday. We had a wonderful time with enormous hilarity and brilliant entertainment by the Red Kites. Mrs Pat Richards was presented with an 80th birthday cake by Mr Keith Duggan (Chair) and Mrs Mary Duggan (Vice Chair) of the Porthcawl Stroke Club. This year we are looking forward to the next round of activities at the club and thank all our supporters for keeping the Stroke Club going. PORTHCAWL TOWNSWOMAN’S GUILD In January our friend Ceri Joseph one again came and gave us a history lecture and as always Ceri didn’t disappoint. The lecture got everybody chuckling and chortling. It was a morale boosting tonic and one all the members appreciated. February 7th - Due to unforeseen circumstances we unfortunately had to cancel our meeting and lecture by Mr Bruce Hawkins with his subject The Queens Jewels. We plan to reschedule and invite Mr Hawkins to speak again to members at a future date. February 14th - We celebrate 70 years of our guild with a Platinum party. The Rev Clive Williams will be our invited guest. Photo albums and memorabilia collated over the years will be on display for perusal by members new and old and will provide a talking point as well as a visual nostalgic trip of the guild’s history. Our birthday celebration happily coincides with Valentine’s Day, creating added anticipation for members of perhaps an early Royal Mail delivery! February 28th - Our coffee meeting will be held in Costa Coffee at 10.30am. As always, reader - you are cordially invited to join us on a Wednesday afternoon at a monthly meeting in The Grove Golf Club. Pat Ladlow

On 11th January we met for the first time in 2024. The meeting began with Eunice welcoming us into a New Year and also welcoming some returning members and a visitor. We then sang Jerusalem, after which Cynthia read the minutes of the last meeting. Lesley was thanked for organising and collecting the snowmen for our Christmas Tree in the festival. We were reminded of upcoming events - the Bluebell Lunch, Pancakes and Beetle Drive, the Birthday Supper and a talk by ladies who took part in the Race Across the World. The speaker this month was Mrs Ceri Joseph who gave us a very interesting talk on a day visit to Jerusalem, which she took while on holiday in Cyprus. She first explained the complex history of the area, which has led to the current situation. Following this she described her own experience of visiting Jerusalem which she found both moving and uplifting although quite frightening at times as they journeyed through the West Bank to East Jerusalem where she visited the major sites and then to the Dead Sea. It was a very entertaining and thought provoking talk. The evening ended with singing the Welsh National Anthem. Pam Powell

Deadline date for the March issue is: THURSDAY 15TH FEBRUARY

FEATURES BRIDGEND MINATURE RAILWAY

Leaves and fallen trees on the line, track to maintain, rolling stock to service and coal to source. All the challenges of a heritage line you may have visited on holiday, but on a smaller scale and locally too! Yes, it’s that time of year when on the Bridgend Miniature Railway, we engage in the tasks that enable us to open in the season ahead. If you are a regular visitor, you will know that we have successfully trialed a new way of opening. We no longer have set dates for the year ahead, but rather we decide based on member availability and the weather forecast (remembering it’s a forecast and not a promise) whether to open at our usual times on a Saturday (11am to 2pm). However, we remain in an increasingly precarious position with regard to membership So if you have time to spare and have always wanted to drive a train or be engaged in running a railway and you don’t mind doing it on a smaller scale then why not join us? You will be very welcome, and membership costs less than one pound a week. Ian Hulatt, Secretary Email: secretary-bdmes@outlook.com

BRIDGEND TOWN TWINNING ASSOCIATION Following a very successful visit to Langenau in July 2023, B.T.T.A. are now preparing for a visit of 26 delegates from Villenave d’Ornon in France. This biennial visit takes place on the weekend of the Wales v France 6 Nations rugby international, so let’s hope our boys will make us proud. While in Bridgend, meetings will be held outlining future cultural, sporting and educational links with our Twin Towns and a concert will be held on Friday, March 8th at Tabernacle Chapel, Bridgend. Cor Tabernacl will join with Chorale du Lac for an evening of light music. Our soloist for this evening will be Sage Taylor, a local talented young violinist. The day after, the group will visit the Grogg Shop in Pontypridd and finally attend the Principality Stadium for the rugby match on Sunday. They return to France on Monday, March 11th. If you feel interested in joining our Association, we are always looking for new members with new ideas. Our secretary, Mrs Madeleine Walters, would love to hear from you. PORTHCAWL LIONS The Boxing Day Fun Run was a great success with 500 keen runners registering. Even the weather was kind with Boxing Day being the only dry, calm day in a week or more of wind and rain. Unfortunately technical problems meant a delay in announcing the results but the winners were: senior male Rowan Axe, junior male Iwan Froley, and senior female Emily Davies. If these runners can contact Porthcawl Lions via the website there are trophies waiting for them. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the planned annual concert in March has had to be postponed. However the club is still working hard to plan events this year. It is hoped that the first of these will be a “get to know the Lions” evening sometime in March so keep a look out for more details if you would like to learn more about becoming a member and helping others, or you could telephone Pauline anytime on 01656 859505. HISTORY A HOLLYWOOD MURDER: PART FOUR Who murdered movie director William Desmond Taylor on the night of 1 February 1922? Suspect number three, Edward Sands. Edward F Sands worked as Taylor’s valet prior to his current valet, Henry Peavey. A known embezzler and forger, Sands was also a serial deserter from the U.S. military. In the summer of 1921, while Taylor was in Europe, Sands forged the movie director’s name on his cheques and wrecked his car. Shortly after the murder, Sands disappeared and was never seen again. One theory suggests that Sands knew about Taylor’s past life as William Cunningham Deane-Tanner, antique dealer and wife deserter, and was blackmailing him. Another theory suggests that Sands knew that Taylor was having an affair with a leading, male, set designer, and was blackmailing him over that. Hollywood executives were keen to avoid a major scandal involving their leading actors and actresses, so they saw Sands as the ideal fall-guy. Elements within the Los Angeles police department considered Sands a prime suspect too. But did he murder William Desmond Taylor? More next time… Hannah Howe, author of Tula, Sunshine and Dana, novels set during the Golden Age of Hollywood. https://hannah-howe.com

JENKIN HENRY TEA

Jenkin was the second son of Thomas Henry and Jennet David (married in 4.7.1830 at St Johns Newton) and was born on 1.2.1833. and trained as a carpenter. His father was the lessee of the Victoria Public House He travelled to Australia in 1857 where the Ballaret goldrush took place, he developed a good business as a weighbridge proprietor and as an adjuster of weighbridges. He made a return visit to the UK and stayed

for a while with his relatives at Newton Court. He died in Australia in 1919 and left the bequest to the Workmen’s Institute (Newton institute) of £200, to the Rest £100, the Wesleyan Church at Porthcawl £100, and to the Poor of the parish of Newton Nottage vested in the PUDC (Jenkin Henry Tea) £200 for those born in the town. Porthcawl town Council maintain the practice of the bequest and today 20 town born residents ranging in ages from 82 to 100 enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea at the High Tide. Before the tea the audience were entertained by Porthcawl Museum’s Rob Taylor talking about the part that Wales played in the dame buster’s raid. Also attending was the well-known Porthcawl resident Peter Henry who was a first cousin twice removed to Jenkin Henry. On hand to present certificates and gift bags was the Porthcawl Town Mayor Cllr Jonathan Pratt David Swidenbank Porthcawl Museum

JENKIN HENRY NO 2

It is difficult to link this gentleman to the Jenkin Henry in last month’s issue, other than they were both local men. However, Jenkin’s brother was a publican named Thomas; the same as last month’s Jenkin’s father? Uncle? Jenkin was born in 1812, married Mary Hopkin of Talbot Farm, Nottage in October 1840, had eight children and farmed Hutchwn’s Farm. (Photo of barn) Spelt Hudgeon originally. Hutchwn’s Close holds the name today. Mary sadly died in 1858. In the 1861 Census Jenkin is noted as being a maltster as well as a farmer. He had become the landlord of the Crown Inn, Newton that also housed a small brewery. It was in 1853, that he is credited with bringing home a flagstone from a quarry near Shortlands Farm and had it laid in front of his inn door. In the course of time it was no longer needed, thrown aside, and ended up covering a cesspool in Newton village green. Eventually, impressions began to appear in the stone, which were identified in 1878 as those of a dinosaur. Colonel Picton Turberville of Ewenny Priory had it taken to Cardiff Museum, where it remains. Porthcawl Museum has a replica, which is displayed in the entrance along with more information relating to the dinosaur. Ceri Joseph

HEALTH INCREDIBLE BUMPS: WELLNESS IN PREGNANCY Growing a new life is undoubtedly a remarkable journey, but it can come with its share of challenges. Feeling tired, irritable, and overwhelmed is entirely normal when faced with the many tasks before your little one’s arrival. However, amidst the chaos, prioritising your well-being can really help. Here are some areas worth focusing on. Your nutrition: Ensuring a healthy and varied diet during pregnancy will help you include a range of vitamins and minerals which are important for growing a baby and ensuring you still have the nutrients you need for a healthy body and mind. Depending on your circumstances, additional supplementation may be necessary; consult your midwife for personalized advice. Your activity level: Maintaining your regular physical activity or exercise routine is beneficial. You don’t need to start a new fitness regime; a daily walk is an excellent starting point. Bridgend offers specialized pregnancy activity classes, including local walks, pregnancy yoga, and swimming. Being informed: Attending antenatal appointments is a given, but actively seek information to understand your pregnancy journey to feel more informed. Explore positive birth stories and seek to understand more about the birthing process can help you feel more prepared. Feeling supported: Consider the support you need during pregnancy, anticipate potential challenges, and envision the support you’d like postpartum. Knowing your needs puts you in a better position to ask for the support you deserve. By focusing on these simple steps, you can give yourself and your baby a fantastic start. For additional guidance and support, consider joining the Incredible Bumps program coming to Bridgend on the 21st of February. To reserve your spot visit www.beincredibletoday.com/ registration or CALL or TEXT 07960883779 Remember, your well-being is important, and with the right resources, you can navigate this incredible journey with confidence.

VITAMIN E It’s something called an antioxidant, which protects your cells from damage caused by cigarette smoke, pollution, sunlight, and more. Vitamin E also helps your cells talk to each other and keeps blood moving. Sunflower seeds and nuts including almonds, hazelnuts, and peanuts are good sources. If you’re allergic to those, vegetable oils (like safflower and sunflower), spinach, and broccoli have vitamin E as do many other healthy foods such as beans, bananas, apples, onions, salmon and prawns. Any vitamin E your body does not need immediately is stored for future use, so you do not need it in your diet every day. Read more at: www.webmed.com Supplied by Glyn Hardwicke

NEW BEGINNINGS How is the ‘New Year - New Me’ resolution going? Are you a tad uncomfortable at the thought of remembering how the resolutions haven’t gone so well? Relax. Be gentle on yourself, maybe we have all been looking at this the wrong way round. Instead of a resolution to change yourself why not resolve to be yourself. Of course I am myself who else could I possibly be? Firstly there is the person who gets up in the morning, simply you. Then as the day progresses you may project a different version to the people you meet, are you the driver who lets other cars out or do you speed up to block buses exit? Are you sweetness and light to your boss and grumpy and unhelpful to your colleagues? Are you generous to friends or do you avoid paying your round? It may be a mix of both which you manage daily, the difficulty comes when you drive your boss somewhere and the bus blocker emerges. How do you harmonize your actions? What would make you happier most days? Maybe start to notice what makes you feel better about yourself and start doing more of this and less of what makes you feel grumpy. Imagine that life is this simple, just taking notice of yourself one day at a time. Margaret Brown

FINANCE YOUR PENSION - YOUR FUTURE Carpe Diem – seize the day! You’ll thank yourself later. It’s never too early and its rarely too late but whatever you don’t procrastinate- If you save £500 per month (inflation linked) into your pension with 5% annual returns after 10 years you would have a fund worth £86,000. Over 15 years this is worth £156,000. Missing out on just 5 years of savings means you lose out on £70,000 due to compound interest. The average person spends two decades in retirement and what you choose to do now dictates what you get to do later. I’m not saying money can buy happiness but why work for so long and not to be able to enjoy financial freedom in retirement? Having control now, over how your pensions are invested and finding out where some of them are hiding is so crucial to achieving the goal of a comfortable retirement. Putting all your pensions together can save you money and give you the freedoms of control and choice over where your funds are invested and what they can do for the future you. Where are your savings funds invested? Who is charging you what? These are important questions as it directly affects how you will live those 20 years. What tax wrappers can you use? Maxed out your pension? There are other options, need access before age 55? There are options, low risk investor, higher risk investor? You have options, and you need to be exploring them now! What’s on your bucket list? Do you want to find out what to do

ELECTION YEAR...TAX CUTS, 99% MORTGAGES?

Well these things do come around and there are bound to be some surprises or it would be a boring life. I mentioned before Christmas that I expected this year to see something of a mortgage war starting to emerge and indeed, within a few days of the New Year starting, a number of lenders were at it. I suppose if you missed your 2023 targets by as much as some lenders did, then the only way to win back market share is to take the bull by the horns and fight for your slice of the cake. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the latter half of this year sees a large number of sub-4% interest rates across the mortgage market – for smaller mortgages against high property values, there are already deals of this nature to be had. We haven’t yet seen all the twists in the political sphere and I suspect that as long as inflation is kept reasonably under control, this year could be somewhat better than last, especially with fuel bills due to fall. One thing I have noticed even in the three weeks (at the time of NSBS SN Rates Ad 154x113mm 071223.qxp_Advert from SiGGA Design Ltd. 07/12/2023 Page 1

writing this) of January, there has been a marked increased in later life borrowing enquiries, for a number of reasons, some of which are matrimonial, others to help Grandchildren get on the ladder and the fact that for all those interest-only mortgages which are due for redemption, the ability to raise capital has started with a bit of a canter and whilst not yet gathering too much speed yet, I predict that this sector will see a marked upturn. Indeed if you’re currently borrowing on a later life scheme, the prospect of lower rates than you’re currently paying, is bound to attract your attention. For first-time buyers who cannot count on Bank of Family for financial help, there are whispers about possible 99% mortgages becoming available. Now, before all you first-timers start jumping with glee, there’s always another side to the coin and there will need to be rather a lot more diligence attached if you are to go down that road, not to mention a great number of thoughts to ponder and aspects to consider. If this does pan out however, be sure that we will be looking to offer such schemes if we feel that they are appropriate and not otherwise – but it’s another surprise move I think we may see. Finally, with our thoughts going out to those people affected by the likely situation that is developing in Port Talbot with steel jobs, it does make you wonder what could be around your corner and if this is of concern to you, get in touch and have a chat. 01656 782545 and 07768 418308 are the numbers you need. LEGAL PRESERVING FAMILY WEALTH

LEGAL AID ELIGIBILITY

Most couples hope that their estate will pass to their children eventually. But for many this will not happen, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay care home fees. To help protect a couple’s estate, the solution may be a Will incorporating a Trust. A testamentary Trust can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of one partner, their Will specifies that their share of the estate is placed in Trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children. But under the terms of the Trust the surviving partner has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property and to enjoy the other assets, for the rest of their life. On the death of the other partner the Trust comes to an end and the estate passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased’s share of the estate it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the beneficiary’s inheritance is protected. If the surviving partner wants to move they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the trust remain over the new property. Christopher Margetson, Partner, Westminster Law

The number of legal firms offering legal aid has halved over the last decade. In addition to this, cutbacks in the amount of legal aid funding and changes to the eligibility criteria have meant that it has become increasingly difficult to access legal aid. To access legal aid, individuals need to demonstrate that they have experienced, or are at risk of experiencing domestic violence from the other party with whom they were in an eligible category of relationship. Currently, if you are receiving a passported benefit and you do not exceed the capital threshold, you are automatically eligible for legal aid. If you work, your income will be assessed including your gross pay, child benefits and any other regular income from other sources with deductions made for any outgoings, such as Tax, National Insurance, mortgage payments, childcare costs and so forth. If you own a property and have savings, these must be taken into account in calculating eligibility for legal aid. If you meet the above criteria, you will be eligible for legal aid funding, or alternatively you may be asked to contribute towards some of the costs. There is concern that the above criteria act as a barrier to justice for those who have experienced domestic abuse and so changes have been proposed to make it easier to access funding, however these are not in force yet. If you have, or are currently experiencing domestic abuse, regardless of whether children are involved or not, our Family Team would be more than happy to assist and support you

GARDEN & NATURE LALESTON GARDENING CLUB

CEFN CRIBWR GARDENING CLUB

February is often the month when we get snow, so jobs in the garden are always ‘weather permitting’ - it’s the month for pruning - roses, clematis and fruit bushes. Cut back ornamental grasses and it’s time to chit potatoes. If you have heated propagators or greenhouse you can start your seeds for summer plants. Divide snowdrops as they finish flowering to increase your stock. Laleston Gardening Club has commenced the year with a lecture by Ivor Mace on growing veg in a small garden and in February on the 12th we will be having a talk on the Kenfig Nature Reserve. Our Ladies Section will have a talk on ‘The Queen of the Skies’ on the 6th and a demonstration and talk on seed propagation on the 20th. For more details of forthcoming events see our Facebook page and website. Susan Ford

“February- the shortest month of the year so if you are going to have a miserable month try to schedule it for February!” (Lemony Snickett) Still it’s not all bad, Monty Don likes February, he says “I like the way it opens out releases the valves for Spring” (Umm I’m with Lemony!) Cut back ornamental grasses to a few centimetres from the ground, as lovely new shoots are beginning to emerge now, they are not going to do very well if last years nasty brown stems are cramping their style! Sow garden peas this month. Try sowing them in old guttering (recycling?) with a few holes in the bottom, put them in the greenhouse or cold frame (they don’t need heat) when they are about 3” tall, dig a shallow trench and slide the peas into it, whoosh – job done! Prune back Wisteria (if you are lucky enough to have one) So beautiful. Never cut into old wood if you are shaping a wayward Wisteria as it will not heal, anything under the thickness of a candle is fair game! In California, the world’s largest Wisteria, planted in 1894, covers an acre and weighs 250 tons, Wow! Fancy pruning that! Chris Early

Surf life saving is a very diverse sport and can offer something to suit everyone! At Rest Bay we provide high quality surf life saving, swimming, ocean and beach training. If you would like your child to learn important life saving skills, how to be safe in the sea and have lots of fun at the same time with like minded kids, then get in touch.

SEA & SPORT

NEPTUNE’S PIRATES BEACH CLEANS What an incredible start to our 2024 Coastal Debris Campaign. It is the beginning of our third year of regular cleans on Coney and we had an incredible 34 people join us last Sunday…no wonder we collected almost 120 kilos of debris. I don’t think we’ve seen Coney looking so clean after we left… incredible! With so many people helping we really can make an extraordinary difference! Along with rubbish, at this time of the year we are on the hunt for ‘mermaids’ purses’. These give us a clue of how healthy the shark and ray populations are in our piece of ocean. We were thrilled to find 25 catshark, 5 Thornback , 7 Spotted and 3 ‘massive’ Blonde Ray egg cases. Quite a haul. We’ll send these details to the Shark Trust to be recorded for their ‘great egg case hunt’.

PORTHCAWL SURF REPORT A very rainy, wind torn and mostly forgettable surfing December behind us 2024 started off with a bang as the entire Welsh coast lit up in the new year’s with all our favorite spots delivering endless opportunities to burn off some excess Xmas calories. Early January, Rest Bay provided a week of smallish but perfectly groomed offshore swells that our local longboarding community took full advantage of and there were plenty of standout moments from the likes of Blake Jones, Angharad John, Emma C, Matt Bradley and Martin John to name but a few. There was even a rumor that our very own WCSC chairman Steve Horn had made an appearance in the lineup, but this is still unconfirmed. Highlights at the other end of town when the larger swells pushed in were George Schofield, Rudder Rava, Pete Morgan and Rob Miles surfing the point with such style and precision and also special shout outs to young Luca Owen who is improving in leaps and bounds out there and the timelessly enthusiastic Chris “Chip” O’Connor who has now been surfing for over 65 years and is still going strong ( a true inspiration to us all). Whilst we are down that side of town, we hope Corum from Coney surf has a full recovery from his recent shoulder surgery and is back in amongst it soon. Mid-winter plummeting water temps has traditionally led to local surfers

heading for warmer climates and this year is no exception with Rob Blythe currently in Western Australia, Tris Evans just back from Mexico, Tyler Morgan, Craig Farnsworth and others on their way to Sri Lanka and Gus Ruddle on his way to Indonesia. With the days finally getting longer for us unfortunate souls left behind, the prospect of after-work surfs is now becoming a reality again so hopefully see you all out the back soon. The WCSC will shortly be holding its long-awaited club contest with bragging rights guaranteed and as soon as the water starts to warm up a bit the Grom club will be kicking off again thanks to Sam Moore and his dedicated team. Checkout the clubs Facebook and Instagram pages for all the details of this and more over the upcoming months. Gary Lewis
