Deputy’s days It’s great to see that the council is carrying out a £70,000 refurbishment of one of Porthcawl’s most iconic landmarks. The town’s Grade II listed lighthouse which stands at the end of the breakwater wall is undergoing a full restoration after a recent inspection revealed that the lantern was

suffering from severe corrosion. As well as replacing the corroded lantern housing, the work will provide a new access ladder and a platform for the navigation light, and a new £12,000 lamp will also be installed. The lamp will be a low-energy LED device which will incorporate red, white and green lenses. Porthcawl lighthouse was the last in the UK to be powered by coal and gas before it was converted to electricity in 1997, and the restoration of this 150 year old building will use tough, durable materials and paints to make sure that the works can withstand the marine weather conditions. When finished, the restored and renovated lighthouse will complement the ongoing Porthcawl marina development to form a major part of BCBC’s plans for the harbourside area. COUNCILLOR DAVID SAGE

Starting gun fired for ‘Rec’ refurbishment The new partnership between Bridgend County Borough Council and Halo Leisure will see Bridgend Recreation Centre undergo a £4m refurbishment over the next 18 months. Works are expected to be completed by mid 2014. There will be some disruption but all facilities will remain open. As part of the refurbishment customers will benefit from: • an integrated reception and café area; • bespoke changing rooms; • brand new 80 station gym; • new indoor climbing wall; • three exercise studios – supporting an exciting and extensive group exercise timetable; • new crèche and larger soft

play facility with dedicated birthday party area; • four court indoor sports hall; • spa – sauna, jacuzzi and steam room; • conference and meeting facilities; • refurbished car park; and • improved access for disabled users. Councillor Lyn Morgan, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing said: “These are exciting plans which will put us in a position to provide 21st century facilities for our customers and the local community as well as benefit from a more environmentally friendly building.” The refurbishment works will start with the development of the gym, workout studio areas and new reception which is expected to be completed by April 2013.
