Welcome...

to the March issue of Seaford Scene. Hopefully as you read this, we are seeing the back of winter and those icy cold spells. The days are getting longer and the dark nights are shortening, and thankfully this month the clocks jump forward by an hour on Sunday 28th – don’t forget! It’s also World Book Day on the 4th, so get those character costumes ready, even if you’re home-schooling! We celebrate International Women’s Day on the 8th – turn to page 47 to find out which remarkable lady, who lived in Seaford, will be commemorated this year. It’s also Mother’s Day on Sunday 14th – I do hope you are able to enjoy the day with your mums, even if you can’t have a socially-distanced meet up, a phone call or a Zoom call will make her day! On Wednesday 17th it’s St Patrick’s Day, so please celebrate by adhering to the government’s current guidelines, cheers! Also in this month’s issue we have news from Seaford Musical Theatre on page 18 and the Crypt Gallery on page 106. Plastic Free Seaford are back on page 99 and what better time to get out and about in the garden than now? – turn to page 62 for our regular A View from the Potting Shed article including gardening tips. With the COVID-19 vaccination programme well on its way, let’s hope some restrictions will have lifted by this time next month. In the meantime, enjoy your March issue and stay safe and well! An introduction to Cliff Gardens: a dedication to Diana Windley

A couple of years ago some neighbours got together for a meal, and had a brainwave. What if Cliff Gardens, the unmade road near Splash point, was not a scruffy rough track, which then had a problem with unofficial parking of caravans and other live-in vehicles, but was instead developed into a garden with multi-use path for bikes/pedestrians and wheelchairs? Everyone we suggested this too, was enthusiastic! We were not sure if it were even possible, but managed to get a local architect to come up with a fantastic suggested design for a garden, and local printers to print them onto large display boards. Our vision was to transform the unmade road into a beautiful garden with seating areas and a multi-use educational trail, connecting to the beach with a ‘share with care’ path to encourage walking and cycling. The road is already a main cycle route, and runs close to Natural England’s long-distance coast path, making it an ideal position to have information about Seaford, cliff erosion and safety, and the flora and wildlife that can be seen. Ideally the garden should also improve diversity in the valuable wildflower corridor that includes the Martello fields. From then on, we proceeded to liaise with Seaford Town council, neighbours, community groups and the public, to see if we could progress this idea. This was a very ambitious plan! What was needed next, was some time (and money) for a proper feasibility study, before the idea could be presented to the residents of Seaford for feedback, design options considered and funding sourced.

For various reasons, the project idea was put on hold. Very sadly our neighbours Diana and Colin Windley died this year. Diana was undoubtedly the main energy and enthusiasm behind the project, spending much of her time tirelessly promoting the project and working behind the scenes.

4

Meanwhile, Seaford Community Partnership (SCP) had been working hard on behalf of Seaford, as part of a National Lottery bid known as Ouse Valley CARES (climate action, resilient ecosystems, sustainability). What fantastic news to hear that the project development grant was recently awarded for five projects in Seaford, including Cliff Gardens. This funding should enable the group to do a full feasibility study, and further community engagement. The full bid is ultimately to exceed £2 million towards projects in the area. This is a fantastic example of a ground up, community initiative, by people passionate about protecting and developing the precious green spaces we enjoy using. This year during the lockdowns, so many people have found solace, exercise, the joy of the natural world and peace in their precious local parks, and wild spaces. We can all have a role in caring for these spaces, which are so valuable for both local people and visitors to the town, while helping pollinators and other wildlife, and doing our bit for the environment. Ideally the garden will be part of a wider vision, improving the whole area including the Seafront and cliffs and Martello fields. If you think you can help this project, please do get in touch with SCP who now need enthusiastic committee members with experience including local planning, project management, secretarial skills, fundraising and publicity. Alternatively if you would like to be kept up to date on progress, we can add you to the mailing list. As part of the lottery funding, SCP is also delivering a project to set up a ‘Friends’ group for each local green space identified in the Seaford Neighbourhood Plan, so if you have been inspired to help protect and improve your local spaces, do get in touch! seafordpartners@gmail.com Images: the site as it is currently and a landscape design impression of the completed project.

u3a News Surveys are so fashionable nowadays. Every scientist has their own pet research project based on the result of a survey. u3a is not to be left out! This page’s short random survey of an unstatistical number of members showed an amazing result – not all members get the same from u3a! Would you have guessed? Asked to name the highlights of their u3a experience, members said that friendship was perhaps the feature that figured most highly. Some members had made friends by organising a group, such as the member who ran a group over the summer season some years ago called ‘Bridging the Gap’. This was a discussion group which entailed lots of preparation by the two group leaders and guided members through some of the big themes of life – love, joy, loss, truth, justice, prejudice and grief, to name but some of the topics. Big ideas but ones that most people could contribute to and gain comfort from whilst discussing. One member found friendships by attending a group. She says, ‘Through u3a I was introduced to a musical instrument which has given me hours of pleasure, even during Lockdown. In September 2019 four experienced players agreed to give about 10 rookie u3a would-be players an introduction to the ukulele. I arrived at the hall clutching my bright blue second-hand soprano uke and joined the others at a large table. We were shown how to loosen ourselves up, sit properly, hold our ukes, and strum a few simple chords. We even managed to play and sing some songs. It was fun, uplifting and we made new friends. It’s not easy at first to sing, strum in different rhythms and play the right chords, so it’s a workout for the brain as well as the hands’. The photo shows the ukulele group last summer. Another member highlighted one particular group about Japan. During the course members looked at geography, history, customs, calligraphy, photographs

6

and picture books, and tried both origami and some tasty Japanese snacks. It was led by a member who had close links with Japan and had visited several times. They provided a whole immersive and memorable experience. One member described a ‘spin-off ’ from the Astronomy group when one evening he was shown (in real life) the International Space Station moving at astonishing speed across the night sky. Outings were mentioned by more than one member, encompassing art exhibitions of the National Trust’s ‘Prized Possessions’ at Petworth House and the William Morris Gallery at Walthamstow, history in the shape of castles, houses and cathedrals, with favourites being Hever Castle and St Paul’s Cathedral, fashion as in the visit to the Dior exhibition at the V&A, gardens as at the Chelsea Physic Garden and many other places visited. The outings organiser still harbours the hope that she will be able to run the outing to Westminster Abbey which fell victim to last year’s lockdown. Activities such as the tea parties, the pub lunches and Downs talks also had fans. Fortunately Seaford u3a has members who enjoy the ‘techie’ side of the action, using the Audio Visual equipment, enabling online courses and hosting the virtual coffee mornings which are now replacing the old-style face-to-face ones. Each to their own. One member summed it up when he said: ‘I love to share sources of enjoyment and information with other people and learn from others’. For more information about Seaford u3a (particularly pre-Covid) see the website www.u3asites.org. uk/seaford. HOW TO CLEAN YOUR BIKE AND KEEP IT WORKING IN THE WINTER WEATHER You will ideally need: cleaning fluid, water source, cleaning cloth, oil rag, drying cloth, brushes, oil/degreaser. So, you’ve been out for an epic bike ride and been a hero riding in the harsh British weather. You’ve got your medals, a sense of achievement and are feeling very happy. However your trusty and very beautiful steed now looks like it’s been lying at the bottom of a swamp for the last two years. You could just stick it back in the garage, shed, bedroom or wherever you keep it. If you do this your bike will be OK in the short term, but after a while the gears (if you have gears on your bike and haven’t got a single-speed rig – best for the winter weather) will begin to stop working properly and then not at all. Your brakes will fail and depending what wheel, pedal and headset bearings you have, they will likely start to seize, all due to mud and other materials getting in all the parts and clogging them up. If you have front/rear suspension then the stansions will likely get scratched, allowing corrosion, and create gaps in the seals leading to poor function and eventually a need to replace – very expensive!

Step 1 Clean the drive-chain.You could use an old

toothbrush and degreaser, but whatever brush you use on your drive-chain, don’t use it on any other part of the bike. This is to ensure you don’t cover your bike in oil/degreaser and to particularly avoid contaminating brakes/brake surfaces with oil – not a good combo. You know you have completed this stage when your chain, rear/front mech is free from crud and moving freely.

Step 2 Rinse the bike down with a garden hose or

bucket of water and cloth. Not a jet washer as this can damage bearings by penetrating seals and causing rust build up then failure. The rinsing will get rid of a lot of the dirt and loosen anything that’s left.

Step 3 Cleaning fluid for proper cleaning. If you’re

in love with your bike and want to wear it like a piece

8

of jewellery, then Muc-Off bike cleaning fluid is very good at combating dirt and bringing your bike back to shiny new. Just spray on, leave for a bit, then wipe over with a cloth. If you’re not so bothered, then put some washing-up liquid of some sort in a bucket of water (warm) and wipe over until all the dirt is off.

Step 4 Rinse off. If dirt still remains, repeat step 3 and 4 until clean enough.

Step 5 Dry. With a drying cloth – chamois if you’re fancy and if not, anything that absorbs water and isn’t abrasive.

Step 6 Protect. If you’re cool enough to own an

Ellsworth, then your frame’s Teflon-coated and the dirt slides off. If not, you can (whilst avoiding brake surfaces) go over metal parts with silicone spray which will protect your frame, make it difficult for dirt to stick to it next ride and make it look real pretty.

Step 7 Lube. Make sure your drive chain is dry (if

not, use an old clean rag to dry it) then make sure every part of your chain is lubricated with appropriate bicycle oil, like GT85. For those with single speeds, just clean and lubricate your chain and feel smug that it only takes you 5 minutes to prepare your bike for the next ride. Chris Hollis www.cycleseahaven.org.uk

Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

Seaford Photographic Society We were very sad to hear in January that the club’s Hon President, pioneering photographer and Seaford resident Grace Robertson OBE had died, age 90. We first met Grace when she visited one of our annual exhibitions and we were delighted when she agreed to become our President in 2016. Despite her age and increasing frailty Grace made sure she took the time to attend our AGMs and present the trophies, as well as continuing to visit our exhibitions. She was always encouraging to our members, regardless of their photographic experience, and she was a charming lady. It was a privilege to have known her. Our first meeting of 2021 was an excellent talk by Alison Taylor ARPS on Coastal Photography. The twenty five attendees included new members Stephen and Liz, who were given a warm welcome by the club. The subject of the talk was particularly relevant to us for obvious reasons and it included lots of useful information about different techniques, including when to use fast or slow shutter speeds to achieve different effects. You can see some of Alison’s superb photographs here: www. alisontaylorphotography.org/coastal-photography. We were pleased to welcome our friends from Seven Sisters Camera club to the annual Marrutt Trophy inter-club competition and this year’s result was quite close. Seaford were ahead at the half time break but Seven Sisters came back and scored more than us in the second half. When the final scores were added up, however, we just managed to retain the trophy with 350 points, to Seven Sisters’ 337. Congratulations to Jennie Edwards who won the prize for the best image of the evening. The first two club competitions of the year, on the subjects of “It’s a Small World” and “People Portraits”, were judged by Brighton’s Wayne Grundy ARPS. There were some superb images on display and lots of

12

useful and constructive comments from Wayne. In the Small World category the first and second place photos featured similar subjects but with slightly different approaches. Chris Dawson’s “Honey Bee on Ivy Flower” (photo above) was the winner, with second place going to Anna-Marie Armstrong’s “Bee on Oxeye Daisy” (photo right). Simon Rigby’s colourful butterfly image took third place (photo left). As usual, the annual People Portraits competition had some very strong entries and the top three photos were all monochrome and all taken by female club members. Well done to AnnaMarie Armstrong (1st) (photo right), Janice Hewitt (2nd) (photo below) and Thelma Long (3rd) (photo bottom). To end the month we had a fascinating talk by Dave McKay ARPS DPAGB BPE4*about his travels in China. We learned a lot about the Miao and Dong ethnic groups and some of the remote villages where they can be found. As expected, Dave’s photos to accompany the talk were superb, with some particularly fine people portraits. Do keep an eye on our website www.seafordps. org, where you will find lots of details about what we do, plus larger versions of all the competition winning photos, members’ galleries, programme of events, latest news, and contact details.

Seaford Musical Theatre – We Are Ready! It’s hard to believe that it is now over a year since we have been able to stage a show at the Barn Theatre. Following our very successful pantomime, Dick Whittington, last January we launched head first into rehearsals for our next show, the all-singing, all-dancing musical theatre show, Chicago. At the same time our Junior section was just ready to present their new show after months of hard work at rehearsals – but then the lockdown hit us and we had to abandon both shows. But we have not been idle since. We had known for some time that many aspects of the Barn needed a full overhaul to bring them up to modern safety and efficiency standards, so we set about a massive programme of improvement under the leadership of our highly skilled Premises Manager, Andy Harsant. Probably the most significant improvement we have made is to ensure the Barn meets all current Fire Safety regulations. To this end we have installed a state-of-the-art automatic fire alarm system thanks to a generous grant from The Theatres Trust. We are also replacing all our carpets and curtains with modern fabrics which meet current regulations. Our thanks for this go to our Wardrobe Mistress, Hilary Ryan, who would normally be busying herself with garment adjustments, for diverting her skills to making all the

Neal Richardson’s Splash Point Jazz Show

FREE LIVESTREAM GIG

curtains herself – a huge task! Another aspect of the work was to overhaul and improve our complete lighting and sound systems, including the remodelling of the light and sound control box at the rear of the auditorium. Again, thanks to Andy but also to our Technical Manager, Zack Fenrir, and our Sound Guru, JJ Nolan, for all their hard work. Finally, like many small theatres, we suffer from a lack of storage space for all our costumes, props and scenery, so we addressed this problem by building a mezzanine storage floor around two sides of the stage, which has given us a huge amount of extra space. I might add that all the above was achieved by maintaining strict social distancing guidelines at all times. So now what? Both our junior and adult groups are desperate to get back on the stage as soon as the Covid regulations allow, so right now we are busy making all the initial preparations for our next show, the ever-popular Oliver, which we desperately hope to bring you later this year. seaford afternoon flower club Our January competition was entitled ‘The Bare Minimum’. This proved to be a popular, if challenging title and some members used the opportunity to endeavour to work along the lines of the Japanese art of Ikebana. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arranging where blossoms, branches, leaves and stems find new life as materials for artmaking. Within the design there is the importance of space, which is not meant to be filled, but created and preserved through the arrangement. Other principles of Ikebana include minimalism, shape and line, form, humanity, aesthetics and balance. You can judge how successful some of the designs have been in achieving these qualities. By the time you read this we hope that many of our Club members will have had their vaccination(s) and with spring well on the way, perhaps we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Website launched for Tide Mills Project The LYT members working on the Tide Mills Project are delighted to share the full website for this exciting creative heritage scheme. The new site features information about the overall project, details about the celebratory week – which will be open to all and take place 20th – 26th September, as well as a huge range of learning resources. Use the online learning pages to discover the incredible history of the site, its landscape and inhabitants. Learn about the original mill building and its most prestigious owner William Catt, the ground-breaking Chailey Marine Hospital, the astonishing WW1 Seaplane Station and Marconi radio station, and the pioneering stables run by David Dale in the 1920s. There is also information about ways in which you can get involved in the Tide Mills Project yourself, such as Kittie Kipper’s ghost net weaving project, which is a great way to get crafty during lockdown. Check out her page under ‘Learning Resources’ for tutorial videos and information about how to get hold of your ghost net weaving kit to take part.

The Living History Project At Seaford Museum This is the advert that launched our Living History Project, and our first major project took place during the depths of the first lockdown. Young people from the Seaford area were invited to have their views heard on a variety of different topics. The responses were interesting and enlightening, and will eventually be an exhibition in the museum. But for now, be uplifted by some of the young people’s comments on Talking Point 1: Entertainment, Interests and Hobbies. ‘In my point of view we are very lucky to have the modern technology we have today so that we can still communicate with our friends and family online over video and other platforms. I know that together we can over come this.’

‘I saw something on tiktok about pancake cereal which my mum then made for me. I am, every week, doing bike rides, walking or some form of exercise.’ ‘My entertainment now is boardgames, cards and movie nights. We have completed, since the beginning of Lock down, lots of puzzles. We have also baked, and I have cooked dinner a few times. We’ve been on walks and bike rides like normal too, but sadly no pub lunch :(’ ‘Now everyone’s lives have changed so drastically so have our hobbies. Although we are unable to dance together in a studio, my dance classes have carried on and kept me busy two days of the week. This is great and makes me so thankful for how technology has developed and allowed us to see each other each week.’ ‘Something new that I have tried is body boarding. I think that Seaford is one of the best places to do it because the waves are really big. I like body boarding because it is really fun and isn’t too hard to do! Now I like going on walks way more than I used to, now that I am used to it. I feel more interested at looking at the scenery and things like that.’ Our later Talking Points included: A Day in the Life of..., Education, Environment, How the News was Reported, If I Ruled the World! AS A LANDLORD WHAT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES DO I HAVE WITH REGARDS TO TAKING POSSESSION OF MY PROPERTY DURING COVID-19? With the law and guidance in relation to possession claims evolving in response to the current pandemic; it is important to understand what the current legal position is to ensure that the correct procedures are followed. The Coronavirus Act 2020 introduced the suspension of proceedings in relation to claims for possessions meaning that courts were not scheduling any hearings in relation to these types of claims. This stay was lifted on 21st September 2020 and the courts are now once again considering possession claims. However, there are likely to be severe delays in the courts dealing with claims due to the backlog of cases. Notices served on tenants from 29th August 2020 until 31st March 2021 must be for a minimum of 6 months. There are however exceptions to this if it relates to circumstances such as, but not limited to, anti-social behaviour, domestic violence and rent arrears of at least 6 months. This means that formal legal proceedings cannot be started until the end of the 6 month notice period, unless an exception applies. When applying for a possession order it is a requirement that evidence is provided setting out how the coronavirus pandemic has affected you and your tenant. If a claim was made before 3 August 2020 a reactivation notice is required and this needs to be communicated to the court and the tenant so that it is clear that a landlord wishes to pursue the claim that had already been started. In normal circumstances, if an order for possession has been granted, the landlord can apply for a Warrant of Possession in order to instruct bailiffs to carry out the order and evict the tenant. However, it is important to note that currently bailiffs cannot carry out evictions. This is the case until 21st February 2021 but, as is the case with this area of law, this date is being kept under review and may well be extended. This again is subject to exceptions, and in the most serious situations bailiffs, may be instructed to evict tenants but this would depend on the specific circumstances. These are incredibly difficult times for both landlords and tenants alike and it is important that both parties communicate regularly. Government guidance strongly urges early conversations between the parties to try to resolve any issues. Unfortunately, despite all best efforts this is not always possible and legal avenues may need to be explored to find out what options are available. Given that this area of law is being updated regularly it is imperative that landlords have the most up to date guidance to ensure compliance. If you are experiencing any problems in relation to these issues please do not hesitate to contact our friendly team on litigation@barwells.com or call 01273 582271 to see if we can assist you.

Abuzz in Cretaceous Park Lockdown has provided a unique opportunity to look at fossils now skulking in the shed, picked up years ago, or donated by friends after day trips to the Weald and the East Sussex coast. Sussex is internationally renowned for producing two out of three of the first dinosaurs ever found, all from the Cretaceous Period, but older than the Seaford Chalk. Fossils can be hard to visualize by non-specialists due to the vagaries of preservation. Thus reconstructions and restorations can be helpful for educational purposes. The Ouse Valley Art Group has not been able to meet for a year. So after a bit of sorting out, we’ve got on with some palaeoart of the less well-known contemporaries of the dinosaurs. Here we revive some of these 130-million-year old creatures that once lived in a ‘Cretaceous Park’. They are now safely in museums… Ed did the research, Neil produced several black and white sketches (Pics 1, 3 and 6), and Biddy created all the watercolours. Our thanks to Fred Clouter for his help with the scans. Pic. 1 (left): Very rare stonefly (Ecdyoperla fairlightensis), originally found at Fairlight by the Jesuit Teilhard de Chardin and a companion, later associated with the Piltdown Hoax. Pic. 2 (right): Archaic earwig (Valdopteron woodi) which didn’t yet have those distinctive earwig forcep-like pincers on the tail. Pic. 3 (left): Cockroach (Elisama molossa) which could have

helped clear up after the dinosaurs in the days before ants. Pic. 4 (left): Butterfly bug (Valdilerdocossus species); cicada-like insect in the days before butterflies. Pic. 5 (right): Large water bug (Iberonepa species) whose living relatives may bite your toes if you go swimming in ponds or streams in warmer parts of the globe. The males have a reputation for parental care. Pic. 6 (left): Cockroach wasp (Archisphex boothi). A solitary wasp – social wasps living in colonies were still in the future. Pic. 7. (right): Pine flower weevil (Oxycorynoides bucklowae). Weevils are the largest family in the natural world and not always popular in gardens, but this extinct beetle lived before most flowers appeared. Pic. 8 (left): Crane-fly (Gynoplistia mitchelli) with possible Australian relatives.

Pic. 9 (right): Black fungus gnat (sciarid) on mushroom. Looks modern, but no fossil mushroom has been found yet in the South East, although one has turned up in slightly younger rocks in Brazil. We’re still hopeful! Biddy and Ed Jarzembowski, and Neil Watson

What is dementia? The word ‘dementia’ describes symptoms that may initially show in mood changes. The symptoms often include difficulties with thinking, language, day-to-day memory, planning and orientation. Yet it is the manner in which the symptoms become apparent, and more obvious to friends and families of sufferers, that make this such a difficult and emotionally trying disease. In fact, one of the best definitions we have come across to the describe the illness is one where the sufferer may have no idea that they are unwell. Imagine being confronted by someone in your home who is claiming, however gently and empathetically, that they are there to give you a bath. Your confusion at this event, even if you cannot remember that the same thing occurred the day before, and the day before that, may swiftly turn to exasperation or even anger at the ridiculous idea that someone should be here to bathe you. Yet you may not have been aware that perhaps you’ve been unable to look after yourself quite as well lately. You’re forgetting your meals, or having issues cooking on your old kitchen, and beginning to lose weight, and forgetting your medication because that used to be taken after dinner, and you haven’t been out in a while, or caught up with concerned family, and so on. So how do you give someone a bath when they don’t even recognise that they need help with this previously straightforward part of their day? By gaining their consent, their real consent, through communicating the idea of a rewarding rest in warm water and a cosy environment or freshening up in the shower so that the reward becomes their idea, their goal, we can then assist them to achieve another positive in their day. At Clifden House we negotiate this learning and relearning with each individual in many different

areas, perhaps several times a day. This requires special patience and fortitude from our carers. We care deeply about our residents and have specific training to help them with their needs, whatever they might be. Initially you may see that the person is withdrawn, anxious or unusually sad. This may start off in small ways and grow over time to become more noticeable. With some types of dementia, the person may also suffer from visual hallucinations or become delusional. We take an individual approach to each resident, working alongside families to find out things they liked doing, and all our staff are fully trained in managing symptoms. Often, this can be as simple as taking the time to sit with a resident and talking to them about their day, in order to open up all and any lines of communication at a time when communicating previously straightforward thoughts and emotions has become complicated, difficult and frustrating. Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Cupani Garden As many of you know, Cupani Garden was closed in 2020 for some major renovation. We did manage to open for Covid compliant plant sales though. A huge thank you to those who supported us, raising over £3,000 for the learning disability charity Stay Up Late. We are delighted that for the first time ever we are open in April for the Spring garden. There are over 5,000 new bulbs planted around the garden, and if the weather is good they will hopefully be blooming. About two thirds of the rest of the garden has undergone a major revamp with lots of new, exciting planting. Some old favourites like Sweet Peas, Roses and Succulents remain but do come and see what we have planted in the newly created drought/gravel garden which will be at the peak of flowering in June and July. We will be serving afternoon teas and lunches (although worth booking lunch). In April we will also serve soup in case it is chilly. All our public openings this year are in aid of the National Garden Scheme (the NGS supports nursing

and healthcare charities). We will also run plant sales throughout the Spring and Summer with proceeds supporting Stay Up Late. This year we will be able to offer a card reader for plant and other sales. Private bookings can be made from May to August. If you belong to a group or want to celebrate an event, contact us to arrange a private visit at http://www. cupanigarden.com/.

Seaford Rotary

Surviving the Pandemic Restrictions At this time of the year, Seaford Rotary would normally be planning various events for the spring and summer, reviewing Santa’s visit to Seaford, and supporting local schools by helping young people with reading and maths. The pandemic has changed all that. We have not meet face-to-face since March last year, but nevertheless we still meet virtually each Wednesday morning. Before the pandemic we would invite speakers to our lunchtime meetings. Our Speaker Secretary has continued to maintain a good number of interesting speakers on a variety of subjects at the virtual meetings. Despite the pandemic, the membership has remained strong, with five new members joining since March. We are grateful for the continued support of our Business Partners, despite their difficulties in these challenging times. Youth competitions usually come to the fore approaching Easter. Regretfully, whilst some students attend school and others do schoolwork online, the six youth competitions (Young Artist, Young Chef, Young Musician, Young Photographer, Young Scientist and Young Writer) have been cancelled. Seaford Rotary relies on the cooperation of the local schools and there is no intention to give them an additional burden during these difficult times. The decision will be reviewed after schools return to normal teaching. Although cancelled last year, we hope to send two young people on the Rotary Young Leadership Award course (RYLA) in the summer. Discussions with the Young Mayor, Mercread Youth Club, and other youth organisations are taking place to establish a Seaford Young Citizen of the Year award in memory of Philip Moorey, who sadly died last year. During his 25-year membership, he was very supportive of young people in Seaford. In the Spring and Summer Seaford Rotary would normally oversee various events to raise funds for use supporting local worthy causes. Due to the pandemic restrictions, we were however unable to raise funds due to the cancellation of: l the Bluebell Walk at Bates Green Farm, Arlington

40

four Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs French markets in Church Street l the South East Triathlon and Seaford Half Marathon l the visit of Santa to Seaford. l l

We hope that the current restrictions will be lifted to enable Boot, Craft and Produce fairs to be held this year from April onwards. We are also hoping that the restrictions will be lifted to enable Seaford Rotary to provide the refreshments for the Bluebell Walk later this year. Further information will be published when arrangements for these events are confirmed. During the pandemic, an increasing number of people had to turn to Seahaven Storehouse for support. Members of Seaford Rotary volunteered, and continue to assist in the Storehouse preparing the food parcels and delivering them to those in need. Seaford Rotary also provided donations to enable food and equipment such as trollies and crates to be purchased. Seaford Rotary financed the fabrication of a sea wall gate which, subject to the approval of Seaford Town Council of the route, will be erected on the proposed path from the town centre to the beach. We also provided a donation to the Friends of Bishopstone Station for two planters for the station platform. Seaford Rotary in partnership with Martello Rotary Seaford re-launched the joint Grant Application scheme, the purpose of which is to support individuals and organisations in our community in a way that can raise aspirations, engender community spirit, assist those in need, or improve the natural environment. Grants are potentially available for individuals and community benefit organisations within Seaford, including Bishopstone and Alfriston. For more information and an application form, visit www.seafordrotary.org.uk and follow the links to ‘Grant Applications’. Applications can only be received electronically.

This year Seaford Rotary is organising the Over the Rainbow Walk along Seaford Seafront between Splash Point and the Sailing Club and back for the Mayor of Seaford’s Charities Initiative. This walk will go on, but on a revised date, as the Government restrictions continuing into March have put the original date at risk. The decision has been taken to defer the Rainbow walk to the afternoon of Sunday 13th June 2021. If our revised date becomes impossible, we will defer the walk again to later in the year. We are resolved to do this for our town whenever it becomes safe to do so! Safety is our guiding principle for all planned events. Whenever it takes place, we look forward to an inclusive community event, a family day outing with a Rainbow of colourful fancy dress costumes. While we wait for the safe date to arrive, we can all have fun planning the costumes! So, please still register your team, pay your entry fee, and start fundraising straight away, because this will be a major Rotary-led community event to help us forget the lockdown dark times and to revive that feelgood factor. Full details are available from Jean Cash: telephone 01323 890372 or email jeannecash@gmail. com.

Blue Plaque for Prunella Briance on Lavender Cottage 8th March is International Women’s day. This year’s theme is Choose to Challenge. It is the day we have chosen to install a blue plaque on the front of our house (Lavender Cottage on Steyne Road/Crooked Lane). The plaque, commissioned by Seaford Heritage, commemorates Prunella Briance. Prunella chose to challenge. In the 1950s women had little control over childbirth. They were expected to do as they were told. Men were excluded. Prunella was an advocate of Grantly DickRead, a Suffolk GP who was determined to remove the fear and control that had become part of the process. When she was pregnant with her second child Prunella eagerly read his work. She couldn’t prevent the fearful medical interventions when her time came, resulting in the devastating still birth of her baby girl. On 4th May 1956, Prunella placed an advertisement in the personal column of the Times: ‘A Natural Childbirth Association is to be formed for the promotion and better understanding of the Dick-Read system.’ She could not have imagined the reaction. This was obviously what women all over the country had been waiting for. She was flooded with letters of support, and it was not long before the Natural Childbirth Association was helping hundreds of women. The first aim of the trust was that ‘women should be treated with dignity and respect during pregnancy and in labour, never hurried, bullied or ridiculed’. The association, now called the National Childbirth Trust (NCT), has been instrumental in changing minds and ensuring a more humane and fulfilling experience for women, their partners and their babies. Prunella continued to be a well-loved and vociferous campaigner for kindness and transparency in childbirth until her death in 2017. Prunella lived at Lavender Cottage from 1960 to 1968. Her husband John was a diplomat. They met whilst

studying Russian at London University. The cottage bears a memory of her time there. During an alteration, and removal of a wall, they needed a beam to fit above the reception room. When others were fitting RSJs, Prunella ordered a canal lock beam from the Stratford and Avon canal. It is quite a feature. A letter from the Prunella Briance National Trust describing 1926 - 2017 its journey is very Natural Childbirth Campaigner amusing, as is Prunella’s and Founder of the National Childbirth Trust letter to the next owners lived here of the cottage. She was particularly excoriating about the kitchen. It was not beautiful when we arrived but it has undergone a major update. Prunella exemplified how ‘Choosing to Challenge’ can change lives. https://www.internationalwomensday.com/ The plaque joins others that commemorate notable people who have lived or stayed in Seaford. Are We Entering the New Roaring Twenties? ‘The darkest hour is just before the dawn.’ This idea is attributed to the English theologian Thomas Fuller from 1650. It could easily be applied now, more than 370 years on. As the weather turns for the better, the vaccine programme accelerates across the UK and green shoots of the ‘old normal’ start to spring up, here at Newberry Tully we’re feeling hopeful. A fascinating article published in February predicts an economic and cultural boom will start when the lockdowns are lifted, and Covid-19 is made much more manageable. It’s something that happened after the Spanish Flu Epidemic which ravaged the globe. Lasting from February 1918 to April 1920, it infected 500 million people – about a third of the world’s population at the time – in four successive waves. The decade that followed, the Roaring Twenties, was filled with economic prosperity. It saw massive construction projects across Europe and North America. Music and the arts flourished as people celebrated the end of World War I and the defeat of a pandemic. There’s a sense among many social commentators and historians that we could be entering a new Roaring Twenties as people begin enjoying the freedoms, we all took for granted. From a property perspective, we feel 2021 will see a lot of activity – especially in Seaford because it’s an

in-demand town and the market here is very durable. And finally...since we started this month’s article with some ancient wisdom, let’s end it with some equally wise words from a modern author, Charlie Mackesy. Taken from his wonderful book – The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and the Horse. ‘What’s the best things you’ve learned about storms?’ said the boy. ‘That they end,’ said the horse. Thanks for reading and stay hopeful.

HOME SWEET HOME Buying a property should be exciting. Not exhausting. All too often, the prospect of dealing with the ‘conveyancing bit’ of moving home can be a little bit daunting. At Barwells Solicitors, we believe it can be better than that. We think the whole process should be made as straightforward and painless as possible. You should be kept right up to date with what’s going on, in everyday language, rather than ‘lawyerspeak’. And you should be kept informed of the cost all the way through the process. In fact we don’t just think it we do it.

can be container grown, as restricting the roots keeps the trees smaller and improves fruiting. You will of course need a warm, sheltered aspect to ripen your fruit.

Mad March, the month when hares box and gardeners get busy, and in this Covid world it’s good to find occupation in the greenhouse or on the veg plot. Growing fruit and vegetables has increased in popularity, especially with the wider variety of crop plants now available, resulting in a massive demand for allotments. Applications for council-run allotments in England have soared during the coronavirus pandemic, with 18-month waiting lists in some places.

slugs

I recently listened to a slug expert on TV extolling the virtues of this slimy gastropod. She explained that we should applaud slugs as they are natural composters, feeding on rotting organic matter. Some slugs will feed only on rotting matter, and are happy to spend their lives in your compost bin, but most garden slugs seem to prefer our fresh young plants. Not so long ago poison pellets were the universal answer to slug problems. Now many gardeners, myself included, prefer to avoid pesticides in our gardens and search for other non-toxic solutions. If you have a veg plot, you might turn to nematodes to prevent slug damage. These are microscopic, transparent worms, which feed and multiply inside the slug, quickly killing off your problem. These can be purchased online and would require repeat applications for complete control. Other non-poisonous methods include beer traps (use cheap supermarket beer), coffee grounds, wool pellets, seaweed and copper tape for pots. Or you could grow plants like garlic, mint and fennel that deter slugs. It’s really a question of trial and error to see what works best in your particular garden.

Most slug damage occurs when plants are young. Providing temporary protection of new growth and seedlings with plastic bottle halves or fruit punnets could see your plants through this vulnerable stage. Brimstone butterfly

This lockdown has certainly felt harder because of the winter. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed the bleak beauty of the season: bare trees, frosted landscapes. But now I need something to get my heart racing. I need a sign – some hope in these challenging times, a promise of those dynamic spring months ahead, a flash of colour. In March my light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming butterfly. On sculpted, vibrant yellow wings the brimstone butterfly makes his elegant entrance into the New Year on those bright March days when you feel the warmth of the sun on your face. Its distinctive yellow wings have given birth to a legend – that this ‘butter-coloured fly’ was the inspiration for the word butterfly. This claim may be a myth and it’s also untrue that these March brimstones are the first signs of the year’s new life. By the time brimstones appear in March they are already on their last (six) legs. Fresh brimstone butterflies emerged from their chrysalises in late summer, so by now they could be seven months old – and in butterfly years that’s ancient. Admittedly, almost all of that time they’ve been asleep in a hedge, sheltered from the storms under holly and ivy. Yet despite the worst winter weather they always emerge immaculate in the spring. They must be made of Teflon. When they awake the (bright yellow) males search for a mate, they mate, the (pale yellow) females lay eggs and then both die. Still, an adult life of over ten months earns them the title of our longest-lived butterfly. An insect OAP. The brimstone’s caterpillars feed on the leaves of buckthorn and alder buckthorn, unobtrusive shrubs which, like the butterfly, are widespread across Sussex. When I first became the proud owner of a garden it was only a matter of days before I evicted the gnomes and planted an alder buckthorn. The following spring I was excited to watch a brimstone laying her tiny, skittle-shaped eggs and I studied the caterpillars as they hungrily defoliated my tree, content in the knowledge that I was doing my bit to raise the following year’s brimstone brigade.

My first brimstone sighting each year doesn’t exactly mean that spring is starting, but it’s certainly a sign that winter is starting to end. And, after the tough winter that we’ve all just suffered, that’s good enough for me. Either way, this beautiful yellow butterfly is a welcome messenger of what’s to come – the first sulphurous spark to ignite the blaze of spring. Let’s hope that with the spring comes hope for a brighter year for us all. Michael Blencowe of the Sussex Wildlife Trust Photos from top: Brimstone Male by Bob Eade©Sussex Wildlife Trust.

Can a Spring Clean be Green? When the spring light catches the surfaces in my home, I see smears and dust, and I fall victim to ‘the spring-cleaning bug’. Suddenly I want to scrub, dust and polish everything in sight. A few years ago, I made a big effort to become a ‘greener cleaner’. I worried about the active ingredients in my cleaning products and wondered how much damage that chemical cocktail was doing to the planet. Most of us have a miniature chemical factory stashed under our sinks: detergents, bleaches and degreasers, all containing potentially hazardous substances which find their way into groundwater, and contaminate the lakes and the oceans. Phosphates are some of the main culprits. They are common in laundry detergents and some cleaning products. An average consumer uses the equivalent of 14kg of detergent a year. High phosphate levels in water cause ‘algae blooms’, which contribute to the death of fish and other water-dwelling creatures. These algae blooms are becoming more common thanks to a combination of pollutants and global warming. Cleaning products can have an adverse effect on our health. Household ammonia is often found in window or general glass cleaners. It is a skin and eye irritant, and deadly to fish, even in low concentrations, so it’s not something we should flush down our drains. Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) is corrosive and an eye, skin, and respiratory irritant. It is especially toxic to people with heart conditions or asthma. D-limonene is a degreasant found in citrus and orange cleaners. It is also a neurotoxin, an irritant and can cause respiratory distress. But as I investigated Eco products I stumbled into a minefield. Many big companies produce eco-brands, but this involves ‘greenwashing’, which is defined as an attempt to make consumers believe a company

is doing more to protect the environment than it actually is. They use unregulated words like ‘natural’ and ‘eco-friendly’ while still using potentially harmful chemicals. They don’t list ingredients or information about manufacture and supply, and if you check their websites there are no environmental targets published nor information about progress on their environmental impact. I won’t lie, truly environmentally friendly products are more expensive so the cheapest way to do a green spring clean is to make your own, and there are some great websites around with detailed instructions on how to do just this. I did try to make my own but found that work constraints meant I struggled with some of the more time-consuming concoctions, but I’ve listed a couple of websites in case you feel you’d like to try this. I am a huge fan of distilled white vinegar which I use to clean toilets, windows and mirrors. I also like bicarbonate of soda which is a great degreaser, scouring agent, and deodoriser. For ready-made cleaning products I’ve suggested a couple of UK websites which are certified environmentally and vegan friendly. I’m not perfect. Sometimes I do grab a regular cleaning product for convenience but I’m gradually becoming greener and if we all switched even one or two of our products for a greener cleaner, the planet would thank us. Martello Rotary Seaford Hopefully by the time you are reading this the first spring flowers will be raising their heads and we might be seeing some more sunshine, always welcome at this time of year. We definitely saw a lot of kindness over Christmas, when due to Covid 19 we had to cancel our Christmas Tree collection. All in Martello would like to say a big thank you for everyone who, whilst having to personally get rid of their old tree, contributed the money they had paid us to do this for them to charity. This helped us raise just over £500. This, plus money raised by all of your support over the past 6/7 months in such events as the virtual runs (massive help from Seaford Striders here), everyone who purchased our community calendars and bric a brac at the boot fairs, has helped us raise over £4,500. From this, and other funds raised, we have been able to donate in January: l £2,000 to WOLO, a local charity helping the day to-day lives of families impacted by cancer. l £1,400 to the local RNLI at Newhaven. l £220 to British Heart Foundation. l £640 to The Youth Counselling Project who work through schools in Seaford to offer specialist counselling to students in primary and secondary education. We have also been able to support a number of smaller projects through our charity grant scheme. Where possible we try to support the local community, big and small. This is only possible due to your ongoing generosity, kindness and support. So, a very big thankyou to everyone who has supported, and hopefully will continue to support us.

Don’t Forget the Environment!

It is not just fundraising that we get involved with. Our environmental programme and support of the ‘greening of Seaford is a major part of our focus. In previous editions you will have read about the various projects that we are trying to support. We now need your help in understanding what you want to happen to the various sites around Seaford under review.

80

Survey

Martello Rotary will be asking the people of Seaford to give their views on the future recreational and environmental uses of the Local Green Spaces as designated within the Town Plan. In conjunction with Seaford Community Partnership, we will be assisting in the creation of five new ‘Friends of ’ organisations to look after and steer the futures of these spaces. The survey is your chance to ensure your views and ideas for use by the community and any environmental enhancements or protection you see as necessary to be included. The survey will be launched towards the end of February and will remain open for one month. It will be accessible online, and we will broadcast the QR Code and web details in the press and on social media. Those living in the immediate vicinity will receive a mail drop to ensure they can participate. Please do participate as this is a fantastic opportunity to make sure our town retains its green spaces in the way that the community wants.

Plastic Free Seaford

We recently had Claire Sumners, who is championing ‘Plastic Free Seaford’ give a presentation on what we can all do to help. By now everyone must be aware of the damage the volume of plastics is doing to our planet and the impact that this will have on future generations. There is a lot we can all do by changing a few simple things. As we all agreed with her, we suggested that we share a few of her top tips each month, so here are the first two. l Pledge to stop buying plastic bottled drinks, condiments and sauces. Glass can be recycled infinitely, whereas plastic has a recycling life. Strive to switch out one disposable item every month throughout the year, for example swap plastic boxed washing capsules for cardboard box powder, tissue pouches for a handkerchief.

l

Every little helps! Contact Martello Rotary for further information on contact@ martellorotary.org.uk or use our QR code to visit our website.

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

Upskill for Brain Health Learning new things has all kinds of fringe benefits. Lots of us began 2021 with the ambition to learn a new skill: beginner’s computer programming, conversational Italian, or how to paint with watercolours maybe. We learn new skills for many reasons. Perhaps we need to improve our computer literacy to gain a promotion, or Italian so we can speak to our new in-laws, or we’ve always fancied learning to paint. Learning is fun, but its benefits go way beyond the actual skill learned, and whatever the skill, whether its crochet or advanced mathematics, the extra benefits are the same.

Positive brain changes: The white matter

in our brain is comprised of nerve fibres covered in a fatty sheath called myelin. It is involved in learning and co-ordination of communication between different brain regions. The more we practise a new skill, the more our white matter increases in density, which helps us when we learn other new skills.

Increased learning speed:

When brain neurons are stimulated, more neural pathways are formed and the faster our brains process new information. It’s as if ‘learning’ is a muscle which strengthens as it’s exercised.

Interconnections:

When we learn a new skill our brains draw on information and skills we already possess, and we build on that existing knowledge. But a wide knowledge base also makes it easier for us to learn more new skills.

Increased interestingness: (Yes, it’s a real

word!) Well-rounded individuals tend to find it easier to relate to others because a wider knowledge base makes it easier to find things in common and thus make friends.

Beat boredom:

Repetition can quickly become monotonous. Following the same routine every night, ‘supper, bath, TV, bed’ makes it easy to become bored. Learning new things breaks the cycle of monotony and gives our brains something to do.

Increased adaptability: Learning new

things physically alters our brains in such a way that our outlook and perceptions change. These alterations make it easier for us to adapt to sudden life changes, like a global pandemic for instance! Adapting to change is a skill, and the more varied our life experiences are, the easier it is to draw on them and adjust.

Prevent cognitive decline: Learning origami doesn’t mean we won’t get dementia. There are many types of dementia and the causes are nuanced. But there are many studies which suggest that people who learn new skills are less likely to experience cognitive decline including dementia. Mental decline is linked to demyelination of our brain. People who actively learn new skills are not giving their brains a chance to demyelinate, and their neural pathways are primed to create workarounds if some area of the brain does begin to fail. The key seems to be to learn things outside of our comfort zone, so if you are a knitter, don’t choose to learn crochet, which is similar, choose Russian, or salsa dancing, or the ukulele instead, subjects which push you out of your comfort zone, but (importantly) which you actually want to learn and will enjoy. Keep exercising that brain! Kate McCarthy

Seven marathons in seven days for St Wilfrid’s Hospice Last month, Danny Sadler, 26, challenged himself to run seven marathons in seven days in support of St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Originally from Seaford, Danny now lives in Colchester, where he completed his fundraising challenge. The hospice’s Care at Home team has been caring for Danny’s mum Rosetta for the past year after she was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Before her diagnosis, Rosetta was the landlady of The Wellington pub and is described by her son as a ‘kind and bubbly woman, popular and liked by everyone.’ He said: ‘This past year has been incredibly hard for my family, but we have been very impressed with the care that my mum has received by the St Wilfrid’s Care at Home team. When we suggest something that we think will make her life easier it’s always sorted by the next day.

a huge difference to the hospice, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. It costs £40 for the hospice’s Community team to visit a patient, like Rosetta, at home and £400 for a patient to receive a day of care in the Inpatient Unit, so every donation, large or small, will enable the hospice to continue helping people in the community to live well until the end of their lives. If you wish to support Danny, you can visit his JustGiving page at: justgiving.com/fundraising/danny-sadler2. And you can find out more about the hospice’s 40th anniversary at: stwhospice.org/ruby. Photo: Danny (right) with his mum and brother.

‘The challenge was a great test for me and though exhausting, I was spurred on, knowing that what I was doing would help people like my mum. I’m glad to be in a position to be able do something like this.’ So far, Danny has raised over £4,000. This will make

Some had never needed support from the benefits system before, while others were already struggling to get by before Covid-19 struck. In total we’ve given 665 people one-to-one advice on Universal Credit since the first lockdown in March. 49% of people seeking our support on benefits used our services for the very first time. We know that the government’s £20-a-week boost to the Universal Credit at the start of the pandemic often made the difference between empty cupboards and food on the table. But that lifeline is currently set to end in just a few short months. It’s a cut that’s likely to push people into missed bills, mounting debts and a daily struggle to make ends meet. It’s a cut that will also drain spending power from our fragile economy. With an ongoing pandemic and a bleak outlook in the jobs market, we’re urging the government to keep that lifeline. It’s the right thing to do to support people who’ve lost livelihoods through no fault of their own. We give people the knowledge and confidence they need to find their way forward – whoever they are, and whatever their problem. Jackie Wilkes, Chief Officer of Lewes District Citizens Advice:

What does your role involve? I chair the committee meetings, lead the social evenings, and put together the programme for printing. What do you most enjoy about your role? I love to chat to people, and love to bring people together. What do you like best about Seaford? I love the community feel to the town, I love being able to walk down Broad Street and see faces that I have seen all my life. What is your favourite piece of music? Bring Him Home from Les Misérables. What is your favourite film? Dirty Dancing every time! What book are you reading at the moment? The Doorstep Girls. What is your idea of perfect happiness? Being surrounded by my family. Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford? I love to walk down to Hope Gap, it held special memories for my parents, so it’s a place I can feel close to them. What makes you sad? The families and friends (mine included) that can’t be together at such a difficult time, and that so many are losing their lives. How do you relax? Either sewing, or reading a good book. What is the most important lesson life has taught you? If you want to do something, put all your efforts in to doing it soon, you never know what is round the corner. What is your favourite journey? My drive home from work. How would you spend a million pounds? I would share it out amongst family and friends. What is your greatest extravagance? Buying books. What has been your most embarrassing moment? There are so many! Arriving for a sewing class, only to find that I was a year late (it was an old poster) and then later sewing my t-shirt to my quilt (note to self, don’t drink Prosecco and sew!). What is your greatest fear? Heights. What is your favourite smell? A baby! What is the best advice you have ever been given? Feel the fear but do it anyway. What would your motto be? Just try your best. What or who is the greatest love in your life? My dad was my favourite man in the whole world, does that count? Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Plastic Free Seaford

A belated but Happy New Year from Plastic Free Seaford! It’s taken a while to get the cogs turning after 2020 and as I write this, it is February after what has felt a very long 2021, despite being only a month in! So here is a recap about how this campaign can help you as a business, organisation or individual. We are a positive, not to mention useful, campaign for everyone in the Seaford community so…

b Drop us a line to say if you are a business owner

who would like a FREE single use audit (it’s a moneysaving tool for you to cut out the items you don’t need to keep re-buying) and you can become one of our brilliant CHAMPIONS.

b If your business or group supports raising awareness of plastic pollution issues to protect the planet, get in touch and say Hi! We love to raise our profile amongst Allies within the community as it’s an essential way to spread the message #noexcuseforsingleuse.

We are here to support every single person in Seaford to start fighting the war on plastic waste and the pollution it causes by eliminating single-use plastic from your bins! Claire, Caroline, Fran www.plasticfreeseaford.co.uk email: plasticfreeseaford@gmail.com Instagram: @plasticfreeseaford Facebook: Plastic Free Seaford Photos from top: Co-leads Fran Chorlton and Caroline Bond; Claire Sumners, Founder.

b Zoom is now a word in my weekly vernacular

as well being a really useful way of keeping the plastic pollution topic in people’s minds and conversations. If you would like to book me, Claire, the Campaign Lead, for an inspiring talk about how to live without singleuse plastics email: plasticfreeseaford@gmail.com. Reducing plastic pollution and tackling society’s throwaway, excessive and unnecessary single-use culture is still top priority for us. Sea swimming, beach holidays, wildlife watching – plastic is now an inevitable and unwelcome part of these experiences. Plastic pollution is also evident inland, blighting our lanes, paths and hedgerows, and inevitably ending up in waterways. If you follow us on Instagram, watch out for the weekly ‘LIVE’ conversations we will be having with our current Champions as well as our followers. LIVESTREAM SERVICES from SEAFORD BAPTIST CHURCH Every cloud has a silver lining as they say. Lockdowns and restrictions have pushed many of us into using technology in a way we may not have intended or imagined. At Seaford Baptist Church we soon realised that in order to keep connection with our congregation and provide spiritual sustenance we would have to ‘go digital’. We are blessed with experts in both sound and vision, and so we made recordings of services in an empty room which were then edited and put onto YouTube, also producing DVDs/CDs for those who don’t have internet access.

went online in November and are gradually adjusting to this new way of ‘doing church’. Again, views are around the 200 mark each week with some watching ‘live’ on Sunday morning and many more viewing the YouTube upload later. We rejoice that we can give spiritual encouragement to even more people than would normally attend a physical service! This will continue even when we

We found that views on YouTube regularly reached 200+ and were encouraged to see people watching from different parts of the world. When it became clear that this was not just a shortterm arrangement we decided to invest in the installation of cameras to enable us to livestream. We go back to normal gatherings. It is also a blessing to those who cannot leave home because of infirmity.

Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club Many members of the Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club collect stamps or post cards based on an interest they have. One such subject is Railways and in particular Trains. This type of collecting is called thematic collecting. Most countries with railway systems have issued stamps featuring trains but the first to do so was Canada when in 1860 New Brunswick issued a 1c lilac celebrating the opening of their railway. Post Offices around the world soon learnt that pictorial stamps were a source of income for them over and above the normal postage revenue. Thus was created thematic philately. Belgium is a good country to start with. They largely based their parcel service on the railway network and as early as1879 had their own stamps. In 1915 a new issue featured railway locomotives. They continued with stamps showing a wide range of engines, both steam and diesel, also station buildings and railway landscapes. Across the Atlantic many countries in North and South America have early examples of stamps featuring locomotives: the USA and Peru being early in the field. Despite the stamps that were produced around the world, Great Britain only produced its first set of stamps bearing trains in 1975 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the introduction of Public Railways. Various issues followed, making up for lost time. Other anniversaries were subsequently recorded with sets featuring classic locomotives, events such as the opening of the Channel Tunnel, and Thomas the Tank Engine.

Collectors can expand their hobby by also adding technical details of the locomotives, route maps, timetables, train tickets and other related information to present their collection in a more interesting way. If you have never collected stamps or post cards, it does not prevent you visiting the Club and finding ways of expanding an existing interest that you have. We meet (in normal times) on the second Wednesday each month at the Seaford & District Constitutional Club at 7pm. Call our Secretary David Manthorpe on 01323 492433 for further details about the club or the arranged programme for 2021. Meetings will recommence as soon as covid restrictions allow. Images from top: Canadian 1c lilac stamp; 1975 commemorative British stamps featuring trains.

CRYPT GALLERY NEWS

Like all galleries around the country, we are still closed. And like all galleries around the country, we are looking forward to being able to open our doors once again when we get the go ahead from the powers that be. But in the meantime, we are constantly thinking up new projects and challenges to keep the creativity brain cells from shrinking!

The Haiku Challenge

This month we are launching a Haiku Challenge. Haiku, in short, is a short poem. However, it is a poem like no other. This Japanese poetic form started life as a short introductory verse to a much longer collaborative poetic structure called rengu. To cut a long story short (see what we did there?), Japanese poets started writing haiku as stand-alone poems whilst retaining their original, and very specific, structure.

Haiku only have three lines of verse, and each of these lines must consist of or, at a stretch, have no more than, a given number of syllables. The first line can only have five syllables, the second line must have seven syllables and the third line is again restricted to five syllables; a maximum total of 17 syllables for the whole poem. We are leaving the subject up to you. Funny, serious, wistful, whatever you’re feeling. Also, there are loads of examples of haiku on the internet for inspiration as well as advice, but some tips from the website masterclass.com are listed below. Decide what kind of haiku you’d like to write. You can choose to follow the 5-7-5 syllable style, or decide you want to be more experimental with your structure and adjust the number of syllables. Pick your subject. Pay attention to small details around you. Nature themes are most common in haiku, so start to notice things like birds or leaves outside, the way the air feels, or even a smell in the air. Many haiku are about very simple natural elements of day-to-day life. Use short phrases that evoke strong images. Choose images that symbolise a season (e.g. fallen leaves for autumn or daffodils for spring) to set a mood with very few words.

Use a ‘cutting word’ to create a break in the meter. Also remember to use punctuation in conjunction with a cutting word to control the rhythm of the poem. The challenge is open to young and old(er) with a prize for each age group. The closing date is Friday 26th March so please send your entries to us at cryptbookings3@gmail.com before then. Winner or not, we will publish all your entries on our website, thecryptgallery.com and social media.

Art Challenge

Don’t forget our regular monthly Art Challenge for all ages – plus prizes too! Go to our website, thecryptgallery.com for regular updates on each month’s subject. Creating is good for you. It’s scientifically official. Think of it as alternative medicine!

Seaford Natural History Society Members of the Seaford Natural History Society have been looking back over their records for 2020 and there have been some surprises. For example, the beautiful Painted Lady Butterfly, one of two regular migrants to Seaford from the continent, was only seen locally four times compared to 127 times in 2019.

mammals and even the weather! Full details of our reports can be found on our website (www. seafordnaturalhistory.org.uk) where membership details can also be found, together with details of this year’s talks, surveys and walks. Yes, members continue to meet and talk, despite the weather and Covid restrictions, via Zoom, Facebook and Newsletter, and continue to record, observe and delight in the wildlife all around us! All photos taken from the Society Facebook pages. Why not take a look? (www.facebook.com/ groups/474856419572591)

If our members were simply not going out into the countryside, due to Covid restrictions, then that would not be a surprise. But our other migrant, the Clouded Yellow, was seen 34 times last year compared to eight in 2019. Why this difference? Amongst our resident butterflies, the steep decline in the Small Heath on Seaford Head continues. Why? We simply don’t know! We do know that there are only 59 species of butterfly in the UK, but a staggering 2,500 or more moths, 128 of which were seen for the first time in Seaford last year! The Marigold Shark found by a member was a first, not just for Seaford but for Sussex. Moths are not just ‘little brown jobs’. The beautiful Merveille du Jour moth was caught in a trap, but the Leopard moth was just sitting on a wall in Sutton Road. But it’s not just butterflies and moths. Our members also reported on the local flora, reptiles, birds,

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) Dear Seaford Scene readers, I hope you are all keeping well and managing ok with Lockdown. Last month, I wrote an article for Seaford Scene about the importance of having a Will in place. This month I will be taking about Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) and why making these should be a strong consideration for everyone. Have you ever wondered what would happen if you lost capacity due to age or ill health? Who would pay the bills, manage your financial affairs and make decisions related to your health care? Your relatives, or even your spouse, cannot just walk into your bank and access your accounts, even if it is to pay for your bills. They will need to be officially appointed as an Attorney under a Lasting Power of Attorney in order to do so.

What are they?

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a document where you officially appoint one or more people (an ‘attorney/s’) to deal with your affairs if you lose capacity. An attorney can be someone you know and trust, such as a family member, or you could choose to appoint a professional. You can only make a Lasting Power of Attorney whilst you have capacity, and unfortunately many people leave it until it is too late and they are unable to make one. This is why we advise people to consider putting Lasting Powers of Attorney in place once they reach retirement (or before if they wish). There are two types of LPA which are Property & Financial Affairs, and Health & Welfare.

Property & Financial Affairs LPA

This LPA gives an attorney(s) power to make decisions about things like managing your bank accounts, paying bills, collecting a pension and selling your home.

Health & Welfare LPA

This LPA gives an attorney(s) power to make decisions on your behalf about things like medical care, moving into a care home or even decisions about life-sustaining treatment.

Why Lasting Powers of Attorney are so important

If you don’t have Lasting Powers of Attorney If you lose mental capacity and do not have a valid Lasting Power of Attorney in place, then your loved ones would have to apply to the court for a Deputyship Order to deal with your affairs. The process can be costly, time consuming and more complex than making a Lasting Power of Attorney, not to mention stressful for all those involved.

l

Any jointly held bank accounts can become restricted without a LPA for Property & Financial Affairs in place.

l

If you lose capacity you will not be able to choose who makes such decisions for you and it could be someone you wouldn’t have appointed yourself.

l

If I can assist in any way, please feel free to give me a call on 01323 893245 or email me at jamie@penrosewills.co.uk. Stay safe and I look forward to speaking with you soon. Jamie Howell, Managing Director, Penrose Wills Limited.

Students are offered 10 sessions each with a therapist, each block costing about £450, for which TYCP has to find the funding.

A huge thank you to Martello Rotary Club which has just presented Seaford-based The Youth Counselling Project with a magnificent £640. One very blowy autumn day we helped this generous club promote the sale of calendars on the promenade, but Rotary hasn’t missed an opportunity to get them broadcast with the happy result that the money raised was shared by us and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP) will use the much-needed money to pay for counselling for those of the town’s youngsters who will benefit from it. TYCP is committed to providing 75 school students with therapy during the current academic year. 11 per cent of boys and 8 per cent of girls aged from 5 to 16 have a clinically significant mental health problem, which often presents as self-harming. But if they are treated early enough these young people have a chance of improving their lives, helping them to go forward feeling much more grounded and happy. TYCP acts as a facilitator to provide specially trained therapists who go into the town’s schools to deliver its service. They liaise closely with the school and together identify students who might benefit from this support.

Plumbing & Heating

To this end TYCP applies for grants from trusts, businesses and other philanthropic organisations, like the Coop Community Fund and The National Lottery, and up until Covid-19 struck, has run a number of local fundraisers, which not only bring in cash but raise public awareness. TYCP is aware that due to the uncertain economic climate, in future it is going to have to rely on much generosity from both public and local sources. TYCP is, therefore, so grateful to those local people who gift money directly to the project or via JustGiving, Amazon Smile and Lewes Local Lottery. For more ideas on how you can help to make young lives happier please visit www.tycp.org.uk/donate.
