SHEILA HANCOCK OPENS SEAFORD PEACE GARDEN Sheila Hancock was greeted by 150 local people when she opened Seaford Peace Garden on Sunday, 10th July. The garden, which is just off East Street, has taken four years to plan and develop and is intended as a place of peace and quiet close to the town centre. The scheme was initiated by Seaford Quaker Meeting, and is a partnership project with Seaford Town Council. “We saw the need for a place where people can get away from the hustle and bustle of busy lives,” said Ralph Taylor of Seaford Quakers. “We all need the opportunity to reflect and be quiet, especially if we are facing problems or difficulties.” A tablet in Portland stone, with letter-carving by Jo Sweeting, encourages users of the garden to “Take time to listen,” whilst another carving by Jo encourages people to “Walk cheerfully over the world.”

The centre piece of the garden is a twelve-foot peace statue, created by local artist Christian Funnell. This is surrounded by a paved area with four “wavy” benches, representing the Downs, also designed and built by Christian. A “peace pole” encourages people to focus on the need for peace throughout the world, with its message “May Peace prevail on earth” in four languages – English, Spanish, Arabic and Japanese. It was local garden designer Lindsay Thomas, who is also involved with the Exchange Project at the Crouch, who first suggested using the old rose garden as the Peace Garden. Lindsay then went on to plan the overall design for the Peace Garden, including the planting. Much of the hard landscaping was carried out by Seaford-based company, Horizon Landscapes Ltd. Now the garden has been completed, it has been handed over to Seaford Town Council which has accepted responsibility for its continuing maintenance.

SEAFORD FAMILY FUN DAY A GREAT SUCCESS The Seaford Family Fun Day, organised by Wave Leisure, Seaford Town Council, the Rotary Clubs of Seaford and the Seaford Chamber of Commerce, proved to be a great success, with over 1000 visitors enjoying the sunshine and stalls. The event was opened at 10am by Deputy Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Sylvia Dunn. Music was provided by the Archway Choirs, RaNdOm and the Seaford Rock and Jazz Orchestra. Community stalls, including Seaford Dog Rescue, Age Concern, Seaford Bonfire Society, Seahaven Harriers, Seaford Baptist Church and Little Kickers enjoyed increasing local awareness and raising funds. Displays in the area included step aerobics, Sama karate, disco and street dancing, ballroom and Latin dancing, kick boxing and Zumba. The Food Fest whet the appetites of the general public with stalls from Paul’s Plaice, The Cake Stand, Nut Knowle Farm, Downsview Farmhouse, Riverford Organic, Seaford Herbal Dispensary and Downland Butchers of East Dean. Hot food was provided courtesy of Paella Party, K2 Catering (hog roast) and Charlie’s Chickens. Cycle Seahaven provided free cycle tuning and the Seaford Rotary Clubs provided an excellent Tavern in the Tent. The Young Mayor of Seaford, Miss Maddie Jay (right) met up with the Fire Service.

east blatchington lectures The last of this season’s lectures finished with a real treat. Dame Felicity Lott gave us a talk called “My Life in Music” and she was wonderful. She informed me this was her first such talk and the afternoon was spent listening to her reminiscences of her life. There was a packed audience in St Peter’s Church, who were delighted when she sang for us and also played some CDs of her performances. To listen to that wonderful voice resounding amongst us in the ancient building was very moving. I am so grateful to her and the afternoon raised £485, bringing our total for the roof fund for this year’s lectures to £1325. As usual my thanks go to all the helpers and our audiences and of course the speakers, and not forgetting Stephen Newberry. Next year is now in the planning stage and some of the old favourites will return. Shirley Linsell

Local hypnotherapist meets new national standards A Seaford based hypnotherapist has become one of the first in the country to achieve a new national standard of excellence for her therapy. Magda Harbour has been registered by the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the UK regulator for complementary healthcare. The recognition places her at the forefront of a national drive to provide a benchmark for standards and safety for the public. Practitioners registered with the CNHC meet national occupational standards and abide by a rigorous code of conduct, performance and ethics. Magda Harbour said: “Achieving registration is not only great news for me and my clients, but a vital step for hypnotherapy. The most popular uses for hypnotherapy are around stress and

anxiety conditions, weight control and addictive behaviours such as smoking and alcohol abuse.” Hypnotherapy is one of 12 disciplines now recognised by the CNHC. Members of the public can search the CNHC register to find practitioners in their local area. More than 40,000 searches were carried out last year. By providing a verification of standards, the CNHC allows GPs, hospitals, private healthcare providers and insurance companies to refer patients to hypnotherapy practitioners or to make hypnotherapy more readily available in health centres, clinics, doctors’ surgeries and hospitals.

Summer Fayre Raises Nearly £1700 for Annecy Catholic Primary School The annual summer fayre at Annecy Catholic Primary School attracted record numbers on Saturday 9th July. The fayre was officially opened by the Mayor of Seaford on what was a lovely sunny afternoon, and attractions that helped pull in the crowds included fantastic live music from local group Triggerfish, dance shows, a karate display, a travelling farm, fairground rides, barbecue, face painting, Archway Choir, strawberries and cream, and lots of stalls, competitions and games including a water-fight area! Organised by Annecy’s PTA (Parent Teacher Association), the fayre is one of the school’s biggest fundraisers. PTA spokesperson Heidi Heseltine said “it was a truly amazing day that not only brought the school together with the local community but raised an amazing £1,669 to help the school”. She continues, “a huge thank you to everyone who helped ensure this year’s fayre was so successful”.

This view from about 1950 is taken from the top of the Church Tower looking towards the Salts and Newhaven. The building later to become Diella’s is on the left. The Southdown Bus Garage was later used by the Council and was demolished to make way for the new medical centre. The building in the centre beyond the Salts is Down Channel, which once stood at the end of Edinburgh Road.

On the evening of Thursday 30th June 2011, President Mike Hemmings handed over the reins to Vice-President Isla Sitwell, who will be President until the end of June 2012. We wish our new President Isla good luck. Our handover function took the form of a hog roast held at the Seaford Golf Club in Firle Road. The golf club is our new and regular venue for future meetings, which are held on Wednesdays at 12.45 for 1pm.

SEAHAVEN ARMED FORCES DAY DISAPPOINTED AS THE SPITFIRE DID NOT COME! A good time was had by all despite blustery weather and dense cloud. The thousands of people who attended the Seahaven Armed Forces Day at Seaford, organised by the Seahaven Branch of the Royal Society of St George and Seaford Town Council on Sunday 25th June, were very disappointed because the Spitfire did not fly over as promised. It was not the fault of the RAF however. At the last minute, because of the high winds, they changed the aircraft to a Hurricane because its range was better, and the Chairman of the Seahaven RAFA, St George member Peter Bonfield, was in constant touch with the RAF. It appears that when it reached the Worthing area in order to turn east to join us, it met dense cloud as well as high winds and had to turn back. Despite the weather, however, a good time was had by all and visitors saw the parade of Veterans followed by cadets from the Navy, Army and Air Force, all from local units. Major Bob Peedle MBE, Chairman of the Seahaven Branch of the Royal Society of St George and Commander of the Parade said “It was great that so many turned out for the parade on this blustery day. At least it did not rain. I am content that the community of Lewes District, led by so many of the local civic leaders, paid a most suitable homage to our serving and former serving members of the Armed Forces”. Helping to marshall the parade were redcapped members of the East Sussex Branch of the Royal Military Police Association. After the parade and inspection by the Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mr Peter Field, visitors were able to enjoy arena events by the Archway Choir, the

Seaford Silver Band and then a demonstration by the Seaford Life Guards. The car parking was arranged by the Newhaven Station of the National Coastwatch Institute. A major raffle was organised with two large toy tigers, kindly supplied through Toy Town of Seaford High Street. These were won by Mr Ian White of Blatchington and Julie Bates of Alfriston. Helping with announcements, including the opening of the event at 11am was Seaford Town Crier, Peter White. Financial support for the day had come from Seaford Town Council, which provided the Martello Fields free and also major administrative back up. Funds were also found by Telscombe and Newhaven Town Councils. Stakes to mark out the arena were presented to the organisers by Wynnes of Seaford.

Who’s Who In Seaford? Natasha Henderson, Manager at Hopscotch Nursery

Natasha has lived in Seaford on and off for the last 10 years. She has worked at the Seaford nursery for six years and as the branch manager for over 12 years. Natasha is hoping to graduate this year after completing a degree in Early Years Education at Brighton University. Natasha is a member of The Archway Contemporary Choir and she has two girls, Charlee 9 and Karla, 4, and another baby is due in January. Natasha is also getting married to her fiancé Shaun in October this year. They have 5 fish and an albino hamster called Sid. What does your job involve? I am responsible for our 92place nursery for 0-7 years. Along with this comes the responsibility of organising a team or 20+ staff. What do you most enjoy about your job? I get the most satisfaction from seeing the children grow and develop into confident, clever children and I thrive on constant improvements, to always be the best at what we do. What is your favourite song or piece of music? Leona Lewis - ‘A moment like this’, (which my daughter, Charlee has sung and recorded, to play at my wedding). What is your favourite film? Top Gun and Dirty Dancing. What is your idea of happiness? Being with my family and sharing special moments together. What book are you reading? Madonna’s autobiography Where is your favourite place to go in and around Seaford and why? I enjoy bike riding with my family around the Seaford Bends, as it gives us quality time together. Which living person do you most admire? My children - I am so proud of all their achievements What words or phrases do you most overuse? Sure! I understand! What makes you sad? Seeing loved ones upset. What is the most important lesson life has taught you? Never take anything for granted, and to live each day as it comes. What is your greatest fear? Drinking from a bottle or straw that someone else has used! What has been your most embarrassing moment? It would have to be walking into a lamppost in a crowded street. What is your favourite smell? White musk. What is your greatest extravagance? My house. How would you spend a million pounds? Easily! I would buy a new car, take my girls to Disneyworld and my fiancé to Vegas. What would your motto be? Be happy.

seaford kurlers At the end of April a number of members went to see the Titanic Exhibition in London. They all returned saying how wonderful it was. Our next social event is a trip to the Houses of Parliament on 28th July, 2011. We are lucky enough to have our local notable Seaford historian, Kevin Gordon, to be our official guide. Being members of ESDA (East Sussex Disability Association) we are able to hire their coaches. This enables us to take our disabled members in comfort, as the coaches are equipped with the modern adaptable seating that caters for wheelchairs. Locally, a number of our Kurlers were in attendance at Seaford Fun Day at the Downs Wave Leisure Centre, on 10th July, 2011. We were there to show the sport to anyone who cared to come to the main sports hall.

lands end to seaford nonstop bike ride A Seaford man has cycled 330 miles continuously in a long-distance charity cycle challenge. On 25th June, Clint Allen and his friend, Andrew Burgman, set off from Lands End to cycle the 330 miles back home to Seaford. This remarkable ride was completed non-stop, continuing all throughout the night. The friends completed the ride to raise desperately needed funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust – a charity very close to their hearts, as Clint’s 13-year-old daughter suffers from this condition. The charity is very short of funds due to the economic climate and their vital gene therapy programme stands in jeopardy of being discontinued. Gene-therapy gives the best possible chance of an extended life for CF sufferers. Donations of any amount in support of the friends’ amazing achievement can be made through Clint and Andrew’s fundraising page, at www.virginmoneygiving.com/ team/BurgsClint, or by going to the Virgin Money Giving website and typing in either of their names.

An Invitation to Inter sport Ladies Night I was kindly invited by Jackie Webber, manager of Inter Sport, Seaford to a ‘Ladies Night’ that was being held on June 30th, at the shop on Clinton Place. Having an interest in sport, keeping fit and well-being, I went along to find out more. What’s more, my invite had a lucky number on it that meant I stood a chance of winning a bottle of champagne! A group of about thirty ladies attended, some from Seaford Striders running club, others associated with bowling, tennis and curling and ladies from businesses and health professions in Seaford. There was a general buzz of excitement in the room. The evening started with an introduction from Jackie, who welcomed everyone, and then she invited Sarah Runchman from Gingerfit Personal Training to take the stage. Sarah gave us the background to Gingerfit and how the business has enabled her and husband Mark to set up a private gym at their home in Seaford and offer 1-2-1 personal training. Using volunteers from the ladies present (me being one of them), Sarah demonstrated how we can improve our physical well-being by being mindful of the way we do things every day, whether it be simply lying down, standing up, bending down or carrying things etc. ‘It’s all about you as an individual and feeling good’, she explained. She also emphasized the importance of exercise for health and well-being, where choosing the correct footwear for your specific activity is essential, and this is where Inter Sport can help. A short break followed with complimentary food and drinks and an opportunity to chat to other guests. Next up was Leonie Dawson from Physio Footprint, who explained the importance of having a correct posture, and once again using a volunteer, demonstrated how we can simply improve the way we stand using an imaginary thread. She emphasized the importance of strengthening muscles around joints, which can help to prevent arthritis and osteoporosis later on in life and for this, simple exercises can be done every day, even whilst waiting for the bus or train! Physio Footprint will meet your individual needs and can offer a wide range of treatments ranging from physiotherapy to chiropody through to acupuncture and weekly exercise classes, and like Gingerfit, will ultimately improve your health, well-being and life considerably.

36

With everyone feeling uplifted, the raffle was drawn for the bottle of bubbly and the evening concluded with the opportunity to buy clothing and sports equipment from Inter Sport with a onenight-only 15% discount.

Seaford Rugby Football Club

ts Recreation Ground, Seaford

Seaford Rugby Football Club was first formed 68 Warren Way, in 1938 and played for one season, before telscombe cliffs, east sussex,Bn10 7dL. the onset of the Second World War caused it to close. It wasn’t a bad start, because after losing the first match 40–0, the Club finished e-mail; g.blatch@sky.com with a record of thirteen wins, losses and tel;nine 01273-584637 one draw. In those days Seaford played in blue with white shorts, and the pitch was at Kingsmead School. It was in 1951 that the club was reformed, thanks largely to the efforts of Ron Beal. The presence of some influential Welshmen changed the club colours to scarlet (I wonder why!), and the team got off to a good start, playing at Newlands School and changing at the Seven Sisters pub – not inside, but in the garages outside, with cold water for the showers being supplied via a hosepipe from the garden tap! Few complained, as facilities were fairly primitive all over Sussex in those days. Some clubs had only a tin bath outside their club building for washing purposes, again with cold water.

August Sudoku

Running Commentary... There were a number of noteworthy aspects to this year’s Seaford half marathon, apart from it being the biggest and, unfortunately, the wettest in its 9-year history. It was won by local athlete, Vanaka Graham, in a superb time of 1hr 29mins. All the other competitors seemed to finish strongly too, including a trio of youngsters - Oliver Griggs, Harry Strong and Ben Martin, who all finished well inside two hours, and a large contingent of men from the 2nd Parachute Regiment. This event is, for some, useful training for the Seaford Marathon on 21st August. Also of local interest this month is a delightful ‘triple’ over the Bank Holiday, beginning with the Alfriston Water Meadows Fun Runs (5km and 2km) on Saturday 27th followed by the Newick 10km on the Sunday and then the King’s Head Canter from Chiddingly to East Hoathly on the Monday. It is well known that endurance sports demand more than just physical strength from participants. There is also a need for mental fitness too which, for runners, increases as the distance increases. The sense of achievement in going beyond one’s comfort zone is enormous, raising self esteem and general health levels quite considerably. The world of marathon running can impress, influence and bewilder people (probably in equal measures) as we hear of more and more examples of extraordinary

Conditions have moved on since those days of ‘coarse’ rugby, and Seaford now has a modern brick clubhouse at the Salts Recreation Ground, with a bar, kitchen and large community hall where there is a dropdown screen for showing international matches. We also have a physio in attendance at all the home matches.

levels of human endeavour. The Marathon de Sables for instance, requires runners to cover 151 miles in 6 days running across the Sahara Desert. Not long ago a runner completed the London Marathon in a deep-sea diving suit, while some runners have, over a long period of time, clocked up in excess of 500 marathons. Comedian Eddie Izzard did 43 marathons in 43 days, but possibly the greatest marathon achievement is that of former stuntman and Seaford resident, Eddie Kidd, who began his marathon in London on 17th April this year along with over 30,000 others and finally crossed the finishing line 51 days later. To put that into perspective, my slowest marathon is 7hrs 50mins, mainly as a result of running in 100oF temperatures and getting badly lost on Salisbury Plain during the race. Eddie Kidd was spending a similar amount of time every day of his epic challenge as he defied his shattered body to summon up the energy and remarkable stamina to haul himself round the course. Change the sport for a moment and consider… could anyone play football seven hours a day for 51 days, even with a fully fit body? I think not! So, if his superhuman effort has inspired you, then go for a run…or check out his website and send a donation to his charity…or both. Next month, in addition to race reports and forthcoming events local runner, Mark Chadd, will be sharing his views on the sometimes baffling question – why do we run? Martin Bulger, Seaford Striders Running Club

We currently run two teams in the Sussex leagues, but are always interested in recruiting new players to improve our standards, or possibly raise a future third team. Seaford players not only get to enjoy the experience of playing competitive rugby around the country, but also the camaraderie that all the players and supporters hold dearly.

So, if you are an experienced player or want to improve your fitness and skills, why not come along to one of our training sessions at the Salts on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 7-9 pm. Alternatively, contact Paul Burns (Club 07732 202208 for more Lane, Hellingly, EastCaptain) Sussex.on BN27 4EY information. an Bird, Peter Joy, Andrew Smith & Julian Turner company Registration no: 6707269

Seaford also has a thriving mini/junior section ranging in ages between 6 to 16, managed and coached by experienced personnel. We have recently been awarded the prestigious RFU Seal of Approval for our junior section, and we are proud to be the smallest club in Sussex to achieve this.

Fill in the grid so that each row, cloumn and 3 x 3 box contains the numbers 1 through to 9 with no repetition. Answers on page 87

For further information on joining our friendly but ambitious junior squad, contact Pete Joy (Youth Director) on 07818 438378, or come down to the Salts on Sundays between 10.30 and midday for a training session. To receive a copy of our handbook, or obtain information, please contact Gerry Blatch (Fundraising & Sponsorship Manager) on 01273 584637 or g.blatch@sky.com.

SEAFORD & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

August is a busy month for many Society members. Up to a year’s work culminates at our Annual Horticultural Show at the Downs Leisure Centre on Saturday 13th August. It is therefore perhaps just as well that in August the garden can often look after itself, leaving time to concentrate on those exhibits selected for the show. Some people say that they do not enter the show because the same people always win. It should therefore be noted that we do have special novice classes which are specifically designed for the less experienced grower. Then, as you increase your knowledge, experience and skills you can progress to the more advanced classes. There are also classes for the whole family whatever their ages and interests. This is not just a horticultural show; there are entry classes for cooking and domestic produce (cakes, jams, chutneys etc) also wines, photography, arts and crafts and many more. It’s all good friendly competition for all the family including children. For more details on entry classes phone 01323 898733 or visit the Seaford Information Centre. If you really don’t want to exhibit then just visit anyway. The show opens at 1.30pm on the 13th and entry is free. Fresh vegetables and plants will be on sale from our Allotment Society colleagues. You will also have the opportunity to have a go on our Tombola stall, purchase plants from the Paradise Park table or enjoy refreshments from the Wave Café. The show closes at 4pm just after the presentation of the Society’s cups and trophies. If you would like to join our Society then speak to Wendy on the Membership & Advice table. Join at the show (cost £6 for the whole household) and you will get membership for 2012 free. See you at the show! Mike Parker, Chairman

How much soil can one mole shift in one hour: Is it 3lbs, 13lbs or 30lbs? 2 “Oh, Adam was a gardener and God who made him sees, that half a proper gardener’s work is done upon his knees”. This is taken from a poem written by whom? 3 When harvesting beetroot, why should you twist off the leaves rather than cut them off ? 4 Which is the odd one out: Bedfordshire Champion, Little Gem, Tom Thumb or Winter Density? 5 Which plant was formed according to mythology from a beautiful youth who fell in love with his own reflection? 6 What are the two most common colours of Lavender? Society History Part 7. The ’60s The start of the ‘60s saw a gradual fall in the membership and by 1962 it reached an all-time low of just 180. (currently 355 households in 2011). In the 1962 Annual Show the best exhibit in the Chrysanthemum class was considered so good that it was transported by train the next day to London for entry in the National Chrysanthemum Show. The Seaford exhibit won a prize of £1. 1965 saw the election of Mrs E. Browning as our first lady President. Mr Bill Webber was elected on to the Committee and subsequently became President in 1989. In order to encourage entries in the 1967 annual show Elphick and Sons, Seedsman of Blatchington Rd sponsored several five shilling gift vouchers for the winners of classes in Carrots, Onions and Potatoes. The Cornish sisters sponsored a similar prize for the best three heads or celery. Members were also reminded that entries in the classes for Domestic Produce were for “ladies only”. These included cakes, bread, jam, chutney, flowers and indoor plants. Vegetable classes were for men! In 1969 the words “Allotment Holders” was dropped and we became “ The Seaford and District Horticultural Society”. To be continued... MEMBERS’ NOTICE There is a misprint in the show schedule for Class 13. Novice Class for Dahlias. This should read ‘One specimen bloom, exhibitor’s own choice’. Please contact Mike on 01323 898733 for details! The Show Secretary must receive your entries for the Annual Show by Thursday 11th August. Green Waste Recycling Service

This stunning garden is the creation of green-fingered Geoff Stonebanks, who has opened his garden on various occasions this year in order to raise funds for charities, including Sussex Beacon, Macmillan Cancer Support, NGS, The Cinnamon Trust, Seaford in Bloom and St Andrew’s Church, Bishopstone. On the opening day, the weather held off, the sun shone and the day was a very successful one with over 50 visitors. A total of £235 was raised for the Cinnamon Trust through donations, sales of plants, teas, coffees and cup cakes. Angela Harris, also a volunteer for the Trust, also sold donated goods which contributed to the funds. Whilst at the opening, the Mayor asked Geoff if he would like to open his garden this summer in aid of her nominated charity for 2011, Waves, a local charity that works alongside voluntary enabling services, supporting families in Seaford. Geoff agreed and will open his garden on Sunday 14th August 2011 from 2 to 5pm. Over £3,300 has been raised for charity at the ‘Driftwood’ garden since 2009 and Geoff is hoping to raise much more this year with further openings.

‘Driftwood’, 4 Marine Drive, Bishopstone www.geoffstonebanks.co.uk www.wavesseaford.org.uk Mike and Jenny Wright, at White Corner, 80 Sutton Road, Seaford will also be opening their garden on Saturday 10th September with proceeds going to the Mayor’s charity, Waves. The garden will be open from 2 to 5pm and refreshments will be available to purchase. For more information, contact Seaford Town Council on 01323 894870. Seaford Gardening Club We are now well into summer with varied weather and plenty of events to attend such as fetes, garden openings and outings to various venues. We are also being kept busy weeding and buying the odd plant or two to help make more colour in our gardens. The speaker at our June meeting, Mr Frederick Maillardet, gave a very interesting talk on the restoration of the Oldland Windmill near Hassocks. The earliest record of its erection is 1703. It is a post mill made of wood and is now fully working and producing flour. Originally owned by the Turner family, it has a fine view of the Sussex Downs with its sweeps (Sussex name) facing into the wind for maximum effect. It started to deteriorate, and in 1934 the Sussex County Magazine mentioned “Oldland Mill is down and done for”! Between 1940 and 1980 it was becoming dangerous and Mid-Sussex

County said it should either come down or be restored. The first estimate to do the necessary work was £7,000 but in fact the cost rose to £30,000, with a large team of volunteers spending many hours of dedicated work. The Dumbrell Foundation gave grants which enabled the team to buy all the 10 different kinds of wood used for the main structure and all important sweeps (seasoned oak from Denmark as not available in the UK). After nearly 30 years the wind turned the new sweeps for the first time. The restoration was complete in 2009. What satisfaction must have been felt by these dedicated people, most of whom were retired engineers. The youngest in the team was only 28 years old and had been weaned on windmills! The weather vane on the top is of a miller’s mate being chased by two rats! A very enjoyable evening for us all with so many interesting questions. There are still places on our two trips to Beech Court Garden in September and Hillier Gardens near Romsey in October. Please ring the number below if you would like to join us. Non-members are very welcome. There is no meeting in August but more information can be obtained from Anne Silk on 01323 491331 or visit our website www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/sgc.

Hatching plans for Wesley Having chickens in your garden is very popular nowadays and my neighbour often brings around some of her spare eggs, which we devour earnestly. But chicken keeping isn’t all feathers and fabulously tasty eggs. Keeping livestock has its ugly side too and that’s how I came to meet Evie. My neighbour was struggling to treat one of her sick hens and had called upon Evie for some help. I watched as Evie picked up the hen, checked her vital signs, ran her hands down its spine and finally tipped her upside down and discovered the root of the horrible parasitic problem. It seems lice are not restricted to our kids’ heads after all! But Evie shows no sign of squeamishness as she carefully removes infested feathers and douses the hen in a medicated powder to kill off the adult lice and help repair the raw patches of skin. Meanwhile the hen, still hanging upside down, shows no signs of distress in Evie’s reassuring and capable hands. After the treatment is over, Evie puts the hen gently back on the ground, where it stands motionless for a few seconds, plumps up its feathers and shakes, creating a small dust cloud at our ankles. The hen then walks off to join the rest of her brood and do what chickens do best; scratch up the lawn. But what is remarkable about this is that Evie is only sixteen and she has been doing this for two years now. “It all started when I met Wesley”, Evie told me. Wesley is a fine representative of the male species. Buff in colour and in name, he stands approximately 24cm tall and considerably taller when he is trying to impress the ‘ladies’. Wesley is a prize-winning cockerel and father to all the Buff Orpington chicks that Evie helps to rear. He has a feisty, over-protective nature, but pick him up and he is as docile as a kitten. For Evie, meeting Wesley was the beginning of her chicken love affair. At fourteen, Evie started looking after her friend’s chickens in order to earn some pocket money. It called for an early start, which meant walking to work, letting out the chickens, feeding them and making sure they had fresh water, all before making her way to school. During the winter months, this was no mean feat, but harsh cold winds have never diminished her commitment to either her work or her studies. But Evie demonstrates what young people are really capable of and she still finds time to party and go shopping with her friends. She is a real

46

inspiration. Her reliability and expertise have made her a valuable asset to her employer, Mary, from whom she has learn’t almost everything she knows about chicken keeping, and she is obviously quite an expert. Evie now hatches and rears several breeds of chicken including pekins, hamburgs, wyandottes and sablepoots. She sells the fertilised eggs through the internet and point-of-lay hens from her own pens; and sales are good. But surprisingly this doesn’t mean she will be doing this as a career. Evie will start college in September to study for her A Levels, after which her plans are in the riding arena as a show jumper. “I’ll be living all over the place while I am training so I won’t be able to have chickens of my own” she says. “But I will have them when I eventually settle down somewhere.” But what is to become of Wesley? Evie doesn’t own her favourite chicken but at the ripe old age of three, his days as a productive fertile cockerel are numbered. Fortunately Evie has plans for him. “Mary is going to retire him soon and then he is coming to live with us for his final years.” she says. Wesley is a very lucky cockerel indeed. To contact Evie to help with your chickens call 07931 984187. June Bradbury

Celebrate Cuckmere As a decade of discussions about the future management of the Cuckmere Valley reached their conclusion, Celebrate Cuckmere exhibition took off. For ten days in June, Seaford enjoyed a minifestival inspired by Cuckmere Haven, with art exhibitions featuring works from both professional and amateur artists, workshops, talks, walks and tea and cake at the Coastguard Cottages. It was a pleasure to open the cottages and the cable house for visitors during the exhibition. What a lot of tea and cake we sold over the two weekends, with all profits going to the Seaford Head Nature Reserve. A big thank you to all the volunteers and staff at the Seven Sisters Country Park who between them baked 45 fabulous cakes, and to my dear friends who served them all at the open house. And a heartfelt thank you to Coralie Tiffin who took on the challenge of finding the cake makers and delivering the cakes, and accomplished both, and more, with such efficiency and goodwill. Thank you also to all the satellite venue hosts. This was an art exhibition for everyone; paintings were on display at the Cinque Ports pub, The Real Deli, the Regency restaurant, Paul’s Plaice and Diella’s restaurant. Stefano Diella made the single most expensive sale of the whole exhibition to a customer who, during dinner, bought one of Anna Gordon Smith’s watercolours for £550. Well done Anna, and thank you to Stef and Martin Johnson of Martin Johnson Antiques for the four cases of wine you so generously donated to the Private View. Stef will kindly offer a 10% discount to anyone who comes into the restaurant mid-week during August and mentions this article. Many thanks are also due to Kevin Gordon for his amusing and informative talks, and Mary Benjamin from the Sussex Wildlife Trust, who shared her knowledge and love of wild flowers on two guided walks. Thanks to Brenda Mann from the South Downs Society and David Morgan from the National Trust who also shared their connection with Cuckmere Haven through their informative guided walks. With thanks to David Sawyer and Steve Ankers from the South Downs Society who gave a fascinating talk on a wild and windy night that at one point was going to take place in the garden of the Coastguard Cottages but fortunately was rescheduled to the much drier Turkey Barn at the Country Park! Thank you to Simon Fathers and the rangers at the Country Park for allowing us to use a large area of the visitors’ centre to display more

Cuckmere exhibits. And to Rob Bowen who ran outdoor tai chi on the cliffs accompanied by the skylarks. Thank you to Peter Martin and David Arscott for the poetry and music evening, Ed Jarzembowski for his shipwrecks talk (see the noticeboard outside the Coastguard Cottages for more to come), Tom Benjamin for his inspiring art workshops and Ronnie Reed and her team at Sussex Wildlife Trust who selflessly gave up their workspace at their busiest time so that we could fill their barn with paintings of glorious Cuckmere. And a massive thanks to all the artists who expressed their love of the Cuckmere in such varied and exciting ways. Thank you to Matthew Rowe, the artistic director of the Towner Gallery, Eastbourne and Sarah O’Kane of St Anne’s Gallery, Lewes for the loan of some stunning pieces. And to Julie Wood and Elke Friar who hung the exhibition in the Pump Barn with such professional flair. This was truly a community event and we are grateful to everyone who shared the vision and helped make the exhibition one to remember. When a journalist from the Sussex Gazette asked me how the Celebrate Cuckmere exhibition had gone, I replied, ‘It was a great success Seaford felt proud.’ Indeed she did. And it’s all thanks to Andy Robertson of the Pathfinder Project and Jane Cecil at the National Trust for wholeheartedly believing in Tania Lindon and myself as organisers and providing the funding to realise the event. New Society Rockets! NN The tradition of bonfire celebrations in Seaford has been re-ignited by the Seaford Bonfire Society.

Formed less than a year ago, the society has over 100 members and is proud to announce that a date and venue for the festivities has been agreed. On the evening of Friday 22nd October a torchlight procession, with members of the society in costume, will set off from Society HQ (The White Lion Pub) and march to the War Memorial, where due respects will be made. The procession, supplemented with members of other Sussex Bonfire Societies, will then continue via Broad Street and High Street to the Martello Fields, where a bonfire will be lit and there will be a free firework display. This event has the support of Seaford Town Council, the emergency services and many other local businesses and organisations. It is intended that this will be a safe, fun event the whole community will enjoy. But rather than watching the parade, why not take part? You can join the society by completing an on-line

form and paying by Paypal or filling in a membership form which is available from the Tourist Information Office or Seaford Library. Our membership secretary, Kevin Start, can be contacted on 07801 840201 for more details. There are a number of opportunities within the society including preparation, assistance with the fire site and helping with costumes. Membership entitles you to march with the society in your costume and represent the society at other bonfire events throughout Sussex. There are a number of ways you can assist us: 1. Join up today! 2. Sponsor a firework at our display 3. Buy a bonfire programme 4. Watch the procession and the free firework display on 22nd October. Seaford Scene, local press and posters will give full details of the event closer to the time, but in the meantime if you would like further information check our website at www.seafordbonfire.com.

A Path To The Sea is a collection of recent work by Karen Saunders (formally Karen Male). Karen revisits her hometown to present this celebration of the natural environment in which she captures aspects of nature and the coast, in and around Sussex and beyond. In Karen’s mixed media artwork she uses a combination of batik, paint, drawing and stitch to produce pieces of work which can be best described as fine art on fabric.

Exhibition runs from Saturday 6th August until Thursday 11th August. The gallery is open from 10.30am to 4.30pm every day. www.batikbykaren.co.uk

THE seaford set art exhibition

The four artists, all members of Seaford Art Club, are Jacqueline Bayley, Mike Harrison, David Wall and Peter Baker. Each paints in their own individual style, using a range of media from water colour to pastel and acrylic, making for a varied and interesting exhibition.

The Seaford Set will be exhibiting paintings at the Crypt Gallery from Saturday 27th August to Thursday 1st September.

This is the third year that the Seaford Set have held their exhibition at the Crypt, and the second year they have exhibited during Artwave. The Crypt Gallery is at 23 Church Street, Seaford and the exhibition is open from 10.30am to 4.30pm daily.

WHAT’S ON AT THE HOP? ‘At Home and Abroad’ George Robertson Saturday 13th - Sunday 21st August George Robertson was born in Shetland in 1953, and painting in his spare time since before leaving school - on canvases, boards, wood panels, furniture, anything he could lay his hands on. After relocating to Edinburgh in 1969 to train as a chef, his paintings were exhibited in several Scottish galleries. In 1973 he moved to the Tonbridge, Kent, area where he continued to work as a chef, and painted at home, until 1980. In Tunbridge Wells he was given the opportunity to take up painting full time, working in the field of interior design and antique restoration. Since moving to a more rural area near Bodiam, he has had the time and the inspirational environment to encourage him to concentrate on canvas painting. He paints mainly in oil on canvas or wood and subjects are often taken from local East Sussex scenery, incorporating the more abstract elements found in both nature and everyday life. ‘Bad Girls and Cicadas’ Nick Orsborn Saturday 27th Aug - Thursday 8th Sept After studying Fine Art at Kingston and Reigate Nick moved to Brighton in 1970. In 1973 he co-founded Cicada Jewellery, producing a range of designs in casting resin which, with its use of colour, moulding and carving, eventually came to represent the three-dimensional interpretation of his creative thinking. Nick has had many exhibitions of his paintings, including shows at Smiths Gallery, Covent Garden and Harrods Art gallery. His work has also been shown and sold at the New York International Art Fair. He is a regular exhibitor in the Brighton Festival Open Houses, and in 1987 provided the image for the first full-colour Brighton Festival Poster. In 2007 he was elected to the membership of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and now shows his work each year at the Mall Galleries, London. His paintings seek to express the optimistic side of life – he likes to explore the subtleties and amusing absurdities of the human condition, and above all his work is hallmarked with a sense of joie-de-vivre – a celebration and a fusion of the figurative and the abstract in life as in art. His work encompasses watercolours and oil paintings, mixed media pieces, resin jewellery and limited edition giclée prints. www. nickorsborn.com Left: ‘Bad Hair Day’ by Nick Orsborn.

Being Kew, every plant and tree was a joy of health and perfection. Trees and plants were labelled and planted with a designer’s eye. Natural sculptures are both witty and tastefully displayed around the paths and there are no ‘keep off ’ signs. A point of great interest was the Millennium Seed Bank. Here the work of saving endangered species goes on but this is not all. Wakehurst’s seed scientists have the power to save plants that are the source of our food, medicine and livelihoods. All this is explained in simple and fascinating ways. Water gardens, meadows, woods, bog areas and valleys all give a variety of enjoyment to visitors and we all agreed it was an uplifting day.

SEAFORD ESDA CLUB The East Sussex Disability Association (ESDA) is a registered charity with over 70 years of experience in supporting disabled people. ESDA is an organisation led by disabled people providing expert advice, information and practical support, and 21 groups around the county provide outings and activities. The Seaford Club goes out every month. The activities range from lunches, afternoon teas, visits to places of interest and just getting together for some good companionship. ESDA has dedicated accessible coaches with fully qualified driver attendants that provide a door to door service for members. In June, members of the Seaford Club went for a ride aboard the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, enjoying wonderful views of the countryside and a good fish and chip lunch. Later in the month members heard about the Cats Protection League and also went out for a lovely lunch at the carvery at Saltdean Tavern.

A Walk through the West End

SEAFORD TELEVISION

Seaford Musical Theatre welcomed Seaford Mayor, Councillor Linda Wallraven, and her Consort, Mrs Liz Holland, as their VIP guests to their show ‘A Walk Through The West End’, which ran from June 8th to June 11th at the Barn Theatre, Seaford. Large audiences praised the show, which featured songs from popular musicals from the last forty years. The next production is planned for 21st-24th September and will be a Seventies era themed show. Review: A most enjoyable evening was had by all at Seaford Musical Theatre’s latest production of ‘A Walk Through the West End’. From the beginning the audience was taken on a musical journey through 40 years of West End musicals, opening with a colourful medley from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’, featuring the wellknown song ‘Any Dream Will Do’. A narrative followed, explaining where, when and for how long the show ran and included names of the famous actors such as Jason Donovan and Phillip Schofield, who had appeared in the leading role. The first half continued in the same style with songs from ‘Me and My Girl’ and hot numbers from ‘Chicago’ - the sassy ladies in their silver hot pants must be commended! This was followed by the ‘The Lion King’, ‘Mack and Mable’, which featured an excellent version of ‘I won’t send Roses’. 42nd Street gave ‘The Tip-Top Tappers’ the opportunity to show off their tap-dancing skills, which they did with confidence, whilst fans of ‘Hairspray’ would have enjoyed the highly amusing songs from the show that were performed and sung brilliantly. The final act of the first half concluded with a medley from ‘Grease’ including ‘Summer Nights’, ‘You’re the One That I Want’ and ‘We go Together’, all foot-tapping stuff! Act II opened with ‘Oliver’ and an engergetic performance of ‘Oom-pah-pah’, an emotional ‘As Long as He Needs Me’, followed by an entertaining ‘Reviewing the Situation’. Young dancers from Seaford School of Dancing joined the company for scenes from ‘Annie’, which were excellent, and also ‘Mary Poppins’ which included the well-known ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ and ‘A Spoonful of Sugar’. Emotional renditions of ‘Maria’ from ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Memory’ from Cats made way for the spine-tingling and powerful finale from ‘Les Miserables’. What a show! Credit must go to the director

SEAFORD CHORAL SOCIETY

It is a truth almost universally acknowledged, but still worth proclaiming, that regular singing in choirs and groups, large or small, promotes physical and mental well-being for the individual - to say nothing of the wider social aspects and the shared enjoyment participation can bring. At school, of course, music-making - if you are lucky can feature regularly on the menu. Later on you have to look around and fortunately for singers, aspiring or experienced, living in and around Seaford there is a wide range of attractive opportunities available. These include Seaford Musical Theatre (which also launched its new Juniors section on July 13), the two very popular and successful Archway Choirs (‘Contemporary’ and ‘Gospelish’), the Downs 60-Plus Club, several church choirs, the Bishopstone Chorale and Seaford’s long established and thriving Choral Society. Many contented singers are members of more than one of these groups, taking advantage of this happy diversity and a wide spectrum of repertoire. Seaford Choral Society’s exciting programme for the 3rd December 2011 concert will include Puccini’s youthful and wonderfully accomplished ‘Missa di Gloria’ and Stanford’s magical and evocative ‘Songs of the Fleet.’ The Spring Concert on 28 April 2012 will feature Brahms’ choral masterpiece ‘A German Requiem’, sung in English. Weekly Monday (7.15 – 9.15 pm) rehearsals at Cradle Hill School, Lexden Road, Seaford resume on 5th September 2011. Potential members are invited to telephone the Secretary, Peter Sayers (01323 492791) for more information. www.seaford-choral-society.com.

The new showroom is located at the House of Tiles, Paradise Park Garden Centre, Avis Road, Newhaven. The showroom demonstrates a wide range of both solar panels and solar roof tiles from major distributors Waxman Energy and Solar Century and enables potential customers to discuss their energy requirements and possible solar installations without any high-pressure sales pitch. The Mayor of Newhaven Councillor Steve Saunders welcomed the new showroom as being a vital part of the regeneration of Newhaven, incorporating the latest green technologies for renewable energy. In officially declaring the new showroom open, MP Norman Baker stressed the dangers of relying on carbonemitting fossil fuels, and endorsed the view of proprietor Graham Bradbury, who lives in Seaford, that the sun is a valuable free resource of almost limitless energy, and now that the technology exists to harness the power of the sun, solar customers can look forward to reducing their energy bills and their carbon footprints, whilst also getting a generous return on their investment through the government’s feed-in tariff scheme.

SEAFORD MUSEUM & HERITAGE SOCIETY Seaford Museum has just received a new model of the SS Seaford. Many years ago, in the 70s, a model of the ship was stolen from the museum, which at that time had no alarm system. This new model was made by Mr David Clarke, a Seaford resident and Museum Member, who kindly donated it to the museum. The SS Seaford was owned by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway Steam Packet Company for the Newhaven – Dieppe route. On 20th August 1895, she was inbound from Dieppe and ran into a fog bank about 30 miles from Newhaven and collided with the SS Lyon from the same company en route from Newhaven to Dieppe. She suffered fatal damage and sank after all of the passengers and crew were transferred to the SS Lyon which, although also severely damaged, was able to return to Newhaven. The photographs show Mr David Clarke, pictured with an original porthole from the SS Seaford which was recovered by divers and is part of the museum collection and the model of the SS Seaford. The Museum website is www.seafordmuseum.co.uk. Telephone 01323 898222. Summer opening times are: Sundays & bank holidays 11am to 1pm and 2.30 to 4.30pm, Wednesdays and Saturdays 2.30 to 4.30pm

Do I need an English solicitor when buying a property in France? A: No, but... you should have an independent lawyer who can speak both languages fluently and has sufficient knowledge of both legal systems to be able to advise you properly on how they interact, particularly with regard to how French inheritance law impacts on your situation. The primary duty of a Notaire is to the French State and his/her function is to verify the identity of the parties, prepare the transfer of ownership of the property (in accordance with the contract already signed by you), ensure the transfer complies with the law and collect any taxes arising as a result of the transaction. A Notaire is not there to protect one party’s interests over and above another. Furthermore a Notaire will often only become involved once the initial contract has been signed. This is because the

initial contract is usually produced by the estate agent using a pro-forma prepared for them. It may not adequately protect you without modification. Bearing in mind the initial contract is legally binding once signed (subject to a 7-day coolingoff period) and is the contract which sets out the terms on which you will purchase, you may not feel confident enough that all the right questions have been asked and that the contract provides the protection you need, even if you are a fluent French speaker. French property law, ownership rules, tax and inheritance all differ from the situation in England in a number of important respects, which is why it is advisable to seek independent advice before signing.
