Coyote Volleyball

The inability to win close games doomed South Dakota in its first season under head coach Joe Glenn and in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The Coyotes lost four games by three points and a fifth by a touchdown. The team’s lone win came at home against Colgate, an NCAA playoff participant.

South Dakota finished out a challenging season by winning its last five matches. One of those matches included a 3-0 sweep of defending conference champion North Dakota State, which had not been done since 2003. The Coyotes also swept South Dakota State in a home and away series, and have now won seven of the last eight matches against SDSU. Sophomore Kendall Kritenbrink was named to the all-Summit League team, and was also a three-time offensive player of the week selection. Sydney Dimke earned Summit League honors as well and was named to the all-Freshman team.

Senior Will Powell became USD’s all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 21. He, along with junior linebacker Tyler Starr, earned all-MVFC honors. Sophomore quarterback Josh Vander Maten proved to be a dualthreat in the Coyotes’ new offense, rushing for nearly 500 yards, throwing for 1,600 more and combining for 13 touchdowns.

Coyote Soccer South Dakota’s fight showed more than ever during the 2012 season. The Coyotes, a team with three upperclassmen, finished the year with two wins, three ties and lost five matches by just one goal. On Oct. 19, USD beat rival North Dakota State, which finished fourth in the Summit League. Senior Erin Bello was named to the Academic All-Summit League team after leading the team in assists and scoring three goals. Junior Jenny Teslow was named to the all-Summit League team after finishing the season with a team-high of five goals and totaling 11 points on the season.

Coyote Cross Country The USD men’s and women’s seasons were highlighted by second-place finishes at the Summit League Championships held in Rochester, Mich. Seven Coyotes earned all-Summit League honors at the meet, including junior Jeff Mettler who was the runner-up in the men’s 8K race. The Coyotes swept Newcomer of the Championship awards as freshmen Amber Eichkorn and Mubarik Musa placed 11th and eighth, respectively. Junior Megan Hilson placed sixth to lead the USD women. In their first Division I postseason competition, the Coyote men placed 12th and women took 14th at the NCAA regional meet in Springfield, Mo. Senior Ethan Marquardt finished 38th to lead the men while Eichkorn finished 56th to lead the women.
