WE ARE SOUTH DAKOTA

FROM THE DESK OF DAVID HERBSTER W

as the 2021-22 academic year a return to normal? If winning titles, winning the South Dakota Showdown series and providing an exceptional experience for student-athletes is normal, then I would like to think at the very least we came close. In many ways, I will remember this past year as one in which we worked to establish a new normal. Let me explain. Coyote football returned to the postseason for the second time in five seasons and the DakotaDome hosted a playoff game for the first time in 35 years. Of course that happened following one of the most incredible plays in program history. Hail South Dakota, The Catch, One in Vermillion – I’ve heard so many appropriate descriptions, but the result was a win against the Jacks, a third-place finish in the toughest division in FCS football, and a trip to the postseason. Volleyball finally got to host that Summit League Tournament they earned by going undefeated in 2019, and it sure was worth the wait. Beating SDSU before sweeping Omaha for the crown inside the Sanford Coyote Sports Center gave Leanne Williamson’s program its third NCAA tournament appearance in four seasons. Thousands of you spent your Thanksgiving weekend cheering on the Yotes in Vermillion. I would love for that to be our new normal.

Women’s basketball advanced to the Sweet 16. They beat South Dakota State in Sioux Falls to win their third consecutive Summit League Tournament trophy, then went to Waco, Texas, and posted dominant victories against Ole Miss and Baylor. They never trailed in their run to the Sweet 16 and won both games by 14 points. I hope you were one of the fortunate who made the trip to Wichita, Kansas, to watch this team take on Michigan. The atmosphere was electric, memorable and the perfect reward for such an accomplished group of women. Coyote Nation showed out, again, on a national stage and we came within one possession of advancing to the Elite Eight. I certainly hope that is our new normal. But that’s not the end of the story by a long shot. Lucky Huber won his 18th and 19th conference titles as head of the women’s track and field team. This year’s indoor squad earned its first Summit crown, ending North Dakota State’s 14-year run in the process. And the point total wasn’t close as USD totaled 200.5 points compared to the Bison’s 152. His outdoor team followed suit in May to complete the double. Thrower Jessie Sullivan repeated as Summit League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the most prestigious individual award given by the league each year. Hannah Sjerven was drafted and became the first Coyote to compete in the WNBA. Tyler Hagedorn was taken second overall in the 2021 G League Draft and played in 15 games during the G League season. Jack Cochrane signed a free agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs and was one of three Coyotes invited to an NFL camp. DeValon Whitcomb was one of 22 football players across the country named to the Good Works Team and was able to provide $10,000 to the charity of his choice. Add that to what Chris Nilsen continues to do on the world stage and the proof is there – the sky is the limit personally and professionally for our graduates. We introduced two new floor generals this spring. I am thrilled that Coach Peterson and Coach Karius have agreed to move their families back to Vermillion. They have hired outstanding staff members, worked the recruiting trail, and are well underway in preparing our teams for the upcoming season. They will need our support and I know you will help me provide it. Their energy and enthusiasm shine bright in the office and in our community and I am excited for what the future holds for our programs. Finally, facilities. Plans to expand the Wellness Center with a new 50-meter pool will commence later this year with a completion date of 2024. This expansion will be a boon to our programs, students, campus and community. It will include a long course pool, seating for 400 spectators, hot tubs, expanded locker rooms, meeting areas and office space for our coaches and student-athletes. Completion of the pool provides an opportunity to reenvision the east side of the DakotaDome so stay tuned. Is all of this normal? We have certainly proven that it can be. Thank you for continuing to believe in our mission and your support of our student-athletes. I look forward to seeing you this fall and throughout the year as our teams continue to achieve amazing things. Until then, Go Yotes! Director of Athletics David Herbster 1

COYOTES WIN SHOWDOWN SERIES; WOMEN CAPTURE HELEN SMILEY AWARD Coyotes win Showdown Series The Hail Mary touchdown pass in late November turned out to be the deciding factor in this year’s South Dakota Showdown Series, an annual competition between the athletic departments at South Dakota and South Dakota State. Both departments accumulated 13 points between athletic competitions and an academic component, invoking the tiebreaker for the first time in the Showdown’s 10-year existence. The football result, a 23-20 Coyote victory in Vermillion, served as the tiebreaker. “What this year showcased is how competitive the collegiate game is in South Dakota and every game is played to the last second,” said David Herbster. “Five Showdown trophies apiece over the last 10 years show you how competitive this rivalry is and continues to be.” South Dakota’s points came from football (2), volleyball (2), soccer (1), women’s basketball (1), men’s and women’s swimming and diving (2) and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field (2). Both schools scored the maximum three points allotted for academic achievement by compiling a studentathlete grade-point average above 3.0. Basketball, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field each claimed Summit titles while three other Coyote teams – volleyball, tennis, and swimming and diving – placed second. Track and field swept indoor and outdoor titles for the first time at the Division I level while basketball swept regular season and tournament titles for the second time in three years. South Dakota finished runner-up in the Summit League Commissioner’s Cup standings, which is the combined score between the women’s and men’s teams. USD finished with 100 points in the final standings to SDSU’s 106.5. NDSU was third with 87 points. On the women’s count, USD (70) and SDSU (61.5) were the only programs to reach 50 points. AN UNFORGETTABLE RUN TO THE SWEET 16 A crowd of more than 8,000 fans roared as the Coyotes exited the locker room tunnel in Wichita, taking the court for the first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in program history. Eighty minutes of executing game plans, flustering opponents with one of the nation’s most stifling defenses and a balanced scoring attack helped South Dakota reach this moment. The Coyotes won their first-ever NCAA Tournament game at the Division I level by defeating a receiving votes Ole Miss squad, 75-61. The magic in Waco, Texas, continued as USD followed that by upsetting No. 7/5 Baylor, 61-47, on the Bears’ home floor. USD’s win over Baylor was the program’s first over a top-10 team in five tries.

Senior Chloe Lamb

The Coyotes never trailed through those first 80 minutes. The games had identical starts with WNBA draft pick Hannah Sjerven stealing an entry pass to the post and then knocking down a 3-pointer on the other end. South Dakota became the 27th double-digit seed to reach the Sweet 16 in NCAA Tournament history. South Dakota’s Cinderella story fell short of the Elite Eight by a single possession. No. 12/12 Michigan defeated the Coyotes 52-49 in the Sweet 16. This year marked the 10th season of Division I eligibility for South Dakota. Coyote women’s basketball has become known as one of the top midmajor programs in the past decade. South Dakota has qualified for five NCAA Tournaments, won four Summit League Tournament titles, captured five Summit regular season titles, twice finished the season as No. 1 in the mid-major poll and twice finished ranked in the top-25 of the national poll. Following a canceled NCAA Tournament in 2020, a pandemic-altered 2020-21 season and a loss to Oregon inside the NCAA Tournament bubble of 2021, the Coyote senior class was due its chance to shine. Three super seniors – Sjerven, Chloe Lamb and Liv Korngable – took advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA and returned for a storybook season. 4

Those three super seniors – dubbed the ‘Big Three’ – racked up the postseason awards. Lamb was the Summit League Player of the Year and Summit Tournament MVP. Sjerven garnered the Summit League Defensive Player of the Year for the thirdstraight season and joined Lamb on the all-league first team. Korngable earned all-Summit secondteam honors for the second-straight year. The trio accounted for 63 percent of the team’s scoring. After starting the nonconference slate with losses to eventual NCAA Champion South Carolina and tournament qualifier Oklahoma, the Coyotes (296) found their rhythm in the U.S. Virgin Islands by defeating the ACC’s Pitt in overtime to kick off a 16-game winning streak. Highlighting that stretch of victories was a 73-71 win over Creighton, which went on to reach the Elite Eight.

The Coyote bench rushes the court after the final buzzer sounds.

South Dakota split the regular season Summit title with in-state rival South Dakota State as both posted 17-1 records and defended home court. A week later, South Dakota came out victorious in the third game of the season against the Jackrabbits, winning 56-45, and the Coyotes lifted their third-straight Summit trophy in Sioux Falls.

The Coyote women put an end to North Dakota State’s 14-year streak of indoor titles and did so in convincing fashion in Grand Forks, North Dakota. South Dakota put up 200.5 points compared to the Bison’s 152. USD finished the job three months later by claiming the outdoor title in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Coyotes totaled 243 points to NDSU’s 225.

Jacy Pulse of Salem, South Dakota, picked up her first individual Summit title in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best of 59.58 seconds. She also snagged gold in a pair of relays at the outdoor meet. She went on to compete at the NCAA West Preliminary in both the 400 hurdles and 4x100 relay.

BACK-TO-BACK FOR COYOTE VOLLEYBALL South Dakota volleyball made two NCAA tournament appearances in 2021. After downing Denver in the championship game of a COVIDshortened season in the spring of 2021, coach Leanne Williamson’s Coyotes outshined Omaha in the championship game of a Summit Tournament played in Vermillion this past fall. It was the third tournament title for South Dakota in four seasons, but the first captured on the Coyotes’ home floor in front of the home crowd. More than 1,000 fans spent Thanksgiving weekend watching USD first eliminate rival South Dakota State in a five-set thriller in the semifinals before sweeping the top-seeded Mavericks for the crown. “This has been a tough year for everybody,” said Williamson immediately following the win over Omaha. “Knowing the inner workings of our team it’s been a challenge in a lot of ways. Going from a spring season straight into a fall season without a training period, it held us back in some situations at the beginning of the year. But I very much always rely on that trust-the-process idea and I think this team absolutely did that.”

Madison Jurgens

Williamson was partially referring to the team’s 3-6 record heading into Summit play. Two of those losses were to NCAA powers Louisville and Creighton and two others were hard-fought matches against what turned out to be the top two teams from the Horizon League. But South Dakota won seven of eight to begin the Summit slate and finished 15-3. Only Omaha, which split with USD, was better at 16-2. That set the seeds for a tournament played at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. South Dakota earned the right to host for something it achieved back in 2019. That squad was unbeaten in Summit play and the national runner-up in the NIVC tournament en route to a 31-3 record. The regular season champion in the Summit gets to host the subsequent year. That wasn’t possible for USD in 2020 when COVID forced a relocation of the event to a neutral site in Sioux Falls. But it proved worth the wait when Elizabeth Juhnke’s match-high 8

Juhnke, a junior outside hitter from Lakeville, Minnesota, was the Summit League Tournament MVP for the second consecutive season. She had 17 double-doubles in 30 matches, led the Summit with 461 kills and was second on the team in digs with 347. Juhnke earned all-region honors for the third time, becoming the first Coyote in the Division I era to do so. Juhnke and junior middle blocker Madison Harms

Senior setter Madison Jurgens (O’Dell, Nebraska) and senior outside hitter Sami Slaughter (Harrisburg, South Dakota) earned honorable mention honors. South Dakota has placed in the top three of the Summit standings in all but one season in eight under Williamson. That includes regular season titles in 2016 and 2019. The Coyotes have reached 20 wins in each of their last three full seasons.

SULLIVAN REPEATS AT SUMMIT SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Jessie Sullivan South Dakota thrower Jessie Sullivan filled his trophy case with nearly every notable academic honor awarded to athletes this year. He was selected as the 2021-22 Summit League Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, received the NCAA’s Postgraduate Scholarship and garnered CoSIDA Academic All-America status. “We are very proud of Jessie’s accomplishments both in the classroom and in the ring,” said USD Director of Track and Field & Cross Country Lucky Huber. “He is a model student-athlete. His work in the weight room, in the classroom, the ring and our community serves as a great example for student-athletes throughout our region. We wish Jessie all the best as he progresses at UNMC and beyond.” Sullivan is a two-time Summit League champion in the discus and a six-time all-league honoree. He qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in both the discus and hammer throw for the second-straight season. He’s also a four-time USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree and five-time Academic All-Summit League honoree. He ranks in the top-five of USD history for the hammer throw, weight throw, discus, indoor shot put and outdoor shot put. 10

A native of Albion, Nebraska, Sullivan graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry while carrying a perfect undergraduate GPA of 4.00. He plans to attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, next year. COCHRANE VOTED MVFC SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Jack Cochrane South Dakota senior linebacker Jack Cochrane became the first Coyote to be named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year following a vote of the league’s sports information directors. Cochrane’s achievements during a fantastic collegiate career are numerous. He is a three-year team captain, a two-time all-Valley honoree and a four-time selection to the first team of the MVFC all-Academic Team. He is an all-American and an academic all-American. He was selected to the FCS Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team in three consecutive years. Cochrane twice helped lead the Coyotes to the FCS playoffs. He racked up 103 tackles – fourth-most in the Valley – this senior all-America campaign and led the conference with four interceptions during conference play. South Dakota finished 7-5, placed a program-best third in the Valley standings and hosted an FCS playoff game for the first time in 35 years. Cochrane’s 327 tackles in four-plus seasons are sixth-most in program history. He started all 39 games from 2018-21.

“Jack represents what is great about college athletics,” said USD head football coach Bob Nielson. “He has achieved at the highest level both in the classroom and on the field. His leadership was a major factor in our team’s success during the 2021 season.” Cochrane hails from Mount Vernon, Iowa. He graduated with a 4.0 grade-point average while majoring in criminal justice and business. He intends to pursue a law degree, but not until his playing days are numbered. This past spring, Cochrane signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Kansas City Chiefs and will be working to make their 53-man roster for this upcoming NFL season.

11.27

The DakotaDome hosted a playoff game for the first time in 35 years. The 43-year-old facility had seen three NCAA playoff games before this one, but none since 1986 when the Coyotes competed in the NCAA Division II championship game. This was an FCS playoff game against conference foe Southern Illinois. The Salukis took advantage of four USD turnovers and scored a 22-10 win.

TIMELINE 02.19

South Dakota’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving captured silver at the Summit League Championships held in Fargo, N.D. It was the third runner-up finish for the women in four seasons. The men have finished first or second in five consecutive championships. Stella Fairbanks was named women’s diver of the championships. Cassie Ketterling won two gold medals and contributed to six school records.

02.26

Women’s track and field captured the program’s first-ever Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championship title at a meet held in Grand Forks, N.D. It put an end to North Dakota State’s 14-year streak of indoor titles and did so with an exclamation point. The Coyotes, behind MOP Sara Reifenrath, totaled 200.5 points compared to the Bison’s 152. Reifenrath won the 200 and 400 and anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay team.

03.08

Women’s basketball shut down South Dakota State 56-45 to win the Coyotes’ third consecutive Summit League Tournament title and fourth overall. USD’s “big three” provided the offense and the Coyotes held the Jacks to less than 25 percent shooting in the win at the PREMIER Center. Super senior Chloe Lamb was named MVP. USD qualified for the Big Dance for the fourth consecutive year and the fifth time in 10 seasons at the Division I level.

03.20

The Summit League Tournament was just the appetizer. The main course was South Dakota topping Ole Miss in the first round and Baylor in the second to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. The Coyotes led wire-to-wire in both contests. Baylor was a No. 2 seed playing on its home court that had made 12 consecutive Sweet 16s. Dessert was a competitive third-round loss to Michigan in front of 8,500 (mostly USD) fans in Wichita, Kan. 26

In a theme throughout the season, women’s golf established new marks for the program. Laerke Jensen, Danica Badura, Akari Hayashi, Paige Hoffman and Molly Fessen set both the Coyotes’ 18-hole record (290, +2) and 54-hole record (894, +30) en route to second place at the Stampede at the Creek in Elkhorn, Neb. USD would go on to place fourth at the Summit championship meet, equaling the program’s best finish.

04.11

The tournament run was highlighted by the play of Hannah Sjerven who earned praise on a national level. As a result, Sjerven was selected as the 28th overall pick of the WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx. She is the first Coyote to be drafted, the first to compete in a WNBA game and the first Summit League player to play at the highest level. Sjerven went on to sign with the Sydney Flames of the WNBL in Australia.

04.15

04.23

WE ARE SOUTH DAKOTA

NEW FLOOR GENERALS ANNOUNCED New leadership for South Dakota’s men’s and women’s basketball teams took shape in one month’s time this spring. Eric Peterson was introduced as head men’s coach March 16. Kayla Karius was named head women’s coach April 10. It marks the first time both hoop squads start a season with new coaches in 40 years. Both Peterson and Karius are returning to Vermillion. Peterson was an assistant coach for the Coyotes under Craig Smith for four seasons from 2014-18. Karius was an assistant for Dawn Plitzuweit for two seasons from 2016-18. “When we hire leadership positions on campus anywhere, especially in athletics, we hire a person of character, a person with a proven track record with significant experience, and someone who embodies what we are when we say ‘Coyote family’ and ‘Coyote values’ and lives that every single day,” said USD President Sheila Gestring. “When we use that criteria, one name rose to the top. Eric Peterson was the clear choice.” On the women’s search, Athletic Director David Herbster said he was focused on finding someone who was the right fit, who understood the culture and who really wanted to be in Vermillion. “Not only does Kayla have the ability to teach the x’s and o’s, she embodies developing strong leaders,” said Herbster. “She understands the culture of winning in the classroom, on the court, in the community and understands the importance of family.” Karius’ hire came less than two weeks after Dawn Plitzuweit accepted the head gig at West Virginia. Of course the Plitzuweit move came five days after South Dakota came within a possession of reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. Plitzuweit was 158-36 in six seasons with the Coyotes.

30

This isn’t the first time South Dakota’s women’s team was a victim of its own success. Amy Williams moved to Nebraska after winning the WNIT championship in 2016 with a senior-laden squad. Plitzuweit quickly reloaded and had an undefeated run through the Summit in year two followed by four consecutive NCAA tournament bids. Karius begins her tenure with a new starting five as well. “I am so excited to work with a group that has tasted a lot of success, yet is still so hungry and driven for more,” said Karius at her introductory press conference. “I cannot wait for all the fun we are going to have together and I cannot wait to get to work.” Karius filled her coaching staff with Ty Margenthaler, Taylor Ignoto and Gabby Johnson. Margenthaler spent the past six seasons at Saint Louis University and was also an assistant coach at Wisconsin. Ignoto, who has served on the bench at Western Illinois and Omaha, was at Utah State the last two years. Johnson most recently was at Valparaiso and Butler. Peterson takes over for Todd Lee whose contract was not renewed after four seasons. Peterson inherits a good number of returners from a team that won 19 games despite the loss of all-Summit performers Stanley Umude (Arkansas) and A.J. Plitzuweit (injury). Plitzuweit hopes to return to the court this season and the Coyotes’ top three scorers from last year in Kruz Perrott-Hunt, Mason Archambault and Tasos Kamateros are back as well. Peterson has also added reigning Summit League Freshman of the Year Paul Bruns who averaged 16 points per game as a starter at North Dakota last season. Casey Kasperbauer is back on the Coyote bench and Peterson has brought in Patrick Eberhart and Brandon Ubel to his coaching staff. Eberhart spent the last 11 seasons on the bench at Omaha. Ubel was a part of Smith’s staff alongside Peterson at both Utah State and Utah.

RECORD ATTENDANCE HELPS RAISE $370,000 AT CALLING ALL COYOTES The ninth annual Calling All Coyotes Auction held April 22 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center saw a crowd of more than 700 help raise more than $370,000 which helps The Howling Pack support the University of South Dakota student-athletes. The event serves as an evening of celebration dedicated to the achievements of USD student-athletes while recognizing a community that helps create opportunities for their success. “Seeing the room come together Friday was a sight to see,” said David Herbster, USD’s director of athletics. “Once it filled with more than 700 loyal fans, it only made the night more impressive and a great way to recognize our student-athletes and celebrate their accomplishments all while raising money to support their scholarships. This speaks volumes about our staff, the community and dedicated volunteers who continue to make this night so special.” CorTrust Bank was the presenting sponsor for the evening, which included silent and live auctions with auctioneer Wayne Haines, music from the Hegg Brothers, drinks, hors d’oeuvres and dinner. Included throughout the audience were numerous Coyote coaches, staff members and student-athletes. Voice of the Coyotes John Thayer of Coyote Sports Properties and Jay Elsen of the Midco Sports Network served as emcees. A long weekend in Nantucket, a week in Seaside Florida, five days in a beautiful home in sunny Arizona and a 20’s themed weekend in New York City were among the many items sold during the auction. With this year’s total of over $370,000, the Calling All Coyotes Auction has raised more than $2.8 million for the Howling Pack and student-athlete scholarships over the last nine years.
