Hats off as the Big Hat Disability Network gets a patron!
The Big Hat Network began in 2007 with the aim to develop opportunities, raise awareness and increase access to performing arts particularly for disabled people. The Big Hat annual cabaret emerged from this network and from small means has grown and is now a regular event on the Swindon disability calendar. Each year members of the network have pulled out the stops to give this unique opportunity to a wide range of ages and abilities. Organisers are currently working on the programme for this year’s event staged at Steam on Friday 23rd June. To add kudos Robert Buckland QC MP Conservative, South Swindon HM Solicitor General for England & Wales has accepted the offer of being the networks first patron. ’I am delighted to become Patron of the Big Hat Cabaret, which is part of the Big Hat Arts and Disability PAGE 06
Network and I am looking forward to watching the annual show at STEAM. ‘’We have some extremely talented performers here in Swindon and the Big Hat Cabaret will ensure that they are given access to the world of performing arts so that they can showcase their talent and we can enjoy their performances.” Said Robert. “We are so pleased Robert has agreed to be our patron and I can’t wait to see the performers faces when they see our MP is watching them perform. Robert really cares about people and always takes time to chat and ask how you are. The Big Hat Cabaret is a unique opportunity for people with disabilities and their teachers and helpers to perform in front of an audience. Their confidence is greatly increased and it is such a joy to see folk having such a fantastic time,”
said Josie Williams, Community Arts Development Officer at Commonweal School and lead for the Big Hat Disability Network. “The show started in the foyer of the Wyvern Theatre in 2007 and quickly outgrew the venue. It was then staged at the Arts Centre in Devizes Road, but after a few years that too became too small. We have been at Steam which is a much bigger venue for four years now and is much better space for wheelchair users,” Josie added. “Big Hat is a marvellous cabaret that show cases the talents of performers, including dance, drama, film and music. This is one of the most successful and popular events in the Swindon cultural Calendar, not to be missed!,” Helen Whelehan from Reach Inclusive Arts, who is one of the networks main organisers.
Reach Inclusive Arts is a charity, based at the Wyvern Theatre, Swindon that works with disabled people and those who have used mental health services to create professionally facilitated original theatre performance and art.
“This will be the fifth year that my family have taken part to support our son Ben who goes to Commonweal School. Josie has nicknamed us the Von Trap family! We really look forward to this event and go away
with pride knowing we have been part of a great community project,” said Doug Morris who will be singing with his wife, daughter and son.

STEAM Launches New ‘Rail by Mail’ Stamps Collectors of railway heritage stamps will be in for a treat on Monday 20 February when STEAM launches the new ‘Mail by Rail’ stamps in Swindon, at the Museum’s permanent Post & Go kiosk. There are 6 stamps in the set, available in 1st class only from 11.00am on 20 February at STEAM until 15 March. Ian Surtees, Income Generation Manager for STEAM said: “We are very pleased to have these exciting new railway heritage stamps available at STEAM and advise collectors to ensure they don’t miss out on these stunning special editions.”
They perfectly reflect the fantastic railway heritage that is reflected in this iconic railway museum.”

Drove Vets Monthly update
Epilepsy - it happens, we can deal with it. Part 2 - STAY CALM! If your pet has a seizure, stay calm! They will be unconscious and neither in distress nor in pain. While a fit lasts, do not touch them and certainly do not try to force anything into their mouth as you will get bitten. They cannot swallow their tongue and if they bite their tongue it will look horrible but it will heal. Instead, remove anything lying around nearby that might cause injury. Gently move them by using a blanket it they are in a dangerous place such as at the top of the stairs. Turn off radios and TV’s and keep their surroundings as dark and as quiet as possible.
Ideally your vet should examine your pet after a fit. It is important that your pet is examined to rule out the more common causes of seizures, such as infectious diseases, liver problems, trauma and tumours. If the fit has lasted for only a few minutes it is better to keep your pet quiet for a while before bringing them into the surgery, so as not to stress them out. If a fit lasts more than five minutes or there are repeated fits then telephone your Vet and ask to be seen immediately. Your Vet may decide to take a blood sample, X-rays and scan your pet. Your Vet may decide to refer them for specialist imaging such as MRI scan or to refer them to a specialist neurologist. Alternatively your vet may decide to simply treat them to make another fit less likely. Treatment is often started after the second seizure. Unfortunately treatment comes with side-effects, it involves giving tablets every day and it is often life-long. Regular blood samples are needed to check drug levels. Unfortunately, the tablets can take a few weeks to work and for that time, the character of your Pet can change. But they often return to their former selves after a few weeks
and can live a more normal life. Unfortunately, the treatment only reduces the likelihood of another seizure and as the cause is not treated, the drugs do not exclude it from happening again.
“Epilepsy happens. It can be dealt with. It is unlikely that your pet will be cured but most will continue to have seizures if left untreated. The careful use of medication will reduce the frequency of seizures and your pet will be able to lead a healthy and happy life. Your pet will not be worrying about when their next seizure is going to happen and neither should you.” The website http://www.canineepilepsy.co.uk is a fantastic source of information. Your vet should also always be happy to give advice.

Passionate about Pets AND Property! Often there comes a turning point in someone’s career when their professional and personal lives cross. This happened to Deb Findlow, from Parkers, in January. “My boyfriend had moved out and my rent had just gone up. I decided it would make sense to downsize, so started house hunting for me, Daisy (my dog), and Bosco, my recently adopted cat. I looked and looked, but couldn’t find anything suitable accepting pets. It was heart breaking and I suddenly felt trapped in a home I loved, but clearly couldn’t afford. Then a lovely lady selling her house with us told me she had to give her dog up because her new rental property wouldn’t accept pets. She was devastated. So was I. The sad truth was, she wasn’t the first person and soon it could also be happening to me. I decided enough was enough.” Sadly SNDogs, Swindon’s dog rescue charity, are contacted between 1 and 5 times every week by people unable to find accommodation with their pets. According to the National Association of Residential Property Managers, 70% of tenants have some kind of pet. PAGE 14

Deb continues. “I started researching why landlords didn’t allow pets? Often it was because of the smell, dirty carpets, damage, fleas and noise. CHURCHFIELDS ACADEMY TO CHANGE ITS NAME! Churchfields has been working with Royal Wootton Bassett Academy for over a year and the DFE have now given permission for it to become part of the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust (RWBAT). Parents were informed on Friday 24th February that the school had started the formal stage and consultations have begun with staff to join RWBAT. The school plans to open as Lawn Manor Academy as soon as legalities can be set up. Sandra Muir Headteacher said ‘we have already experienced benefits from the North Wiltshire Teaching School and sharing good practice between faculties to improve teaching and learning at our school. Our Year 11 pupils have also benefitted from attending a Sixth Form taster day in November and this has prompted some of our pupils making applications to continue their Sixth Form studies at RWBA’. Sandra added ‘we have invested a lot of time this year forming a new vision for the school of ‘Creating and Inspiring Futures for All’. The vision extends to our staff and pupils and drives all of the improvements that are taking place throughout the school, but with a particular focus on teaching and learning.
We have recently been externally audited and this identified and confirmed the work that the newly formed leadership team and staff are working well to drive standards needed. We look forward to continuing this drive under the new Multi Academy PAGE 16

and Oliver to Swindon Foyer to see first-hand the important work that our team here at Swindon Foyer do on a daily basis. While it is only a small part of our overall business, Stonewater is immensely proud to provide these services and of the difference they can make to the lives of young people.
South Swindon MP Robert Buckland visited Swindon Foyer on Friday 27 January 2017 along with the Leader of Swindon Borough Council, Cllr David Renard and Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness, Cllr Oliver Donachie to meet the Foyer’s young residents and take part in a life skills workshop.
Swindon Foyer is set in the heart of Old Town in Swindon and supports some of the most disadvantaged young people in the community. It offers an integrated solution to housing, personal development and the training needs of its young residents. The foyer is run by Stonewater, one of the UK’s leading social housing providers. As well as meeting the dedicated staff at the Foyer, Robert met a number of residents, who provided a tour of the building and its facilities. It was an opportunity to discuss some of the challenges young people face and to sit in on a life skills workshop where residents discussed positivity. Swindon Foyer accommodates 57 young people aged between 16-25 years old. While staying at the Foyer, residents are supported to engage in employment, education and training opportunities, either on their own or as part of a group. Sue Shirt, Executive Director – Housing at Stonewater said: “It was great to welcome Robert, David

World Cancer Day Robert showed his support for World Cancer Day 2017 at an event held in the House of Commons on the 1st of February. At the event, Cancer Research UK will be uniting with five other leading UK cancer charities. MPs had the chance to hear from those affected by cancer and see how UK charities are working together to accelerate the progress in the fight against cancer.
World Cancer Day takes place every year on 4th February and unites the world’s population in the fight against cancer. It aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about the disease. Currently, 8.2 million people die from cancer worldwide every year, out of which, 4 million people die prematurely (aged 30 to 69 years) World Cancer Day is the ideal opportunity to spread the word and raise the profile of cancer in people’s minds and in the world’s media. Robert commented: ‘’ Few families have not been touched by cancer, and mine is no exception, which is why I am pleased to support World Cancer Day. ‘’The Government is committed to improving cancer outcomes throughout the UK and recognises that investing in research is vital in order to increase survival rates. 11 Year old sponsors SNDogs Old Town Festival Dog Show! When Kody Bowler, an 11-year-old boy who attends Commonweal School, Swindon, found out that, the Old Town Festival dog show was under threat, as the sponsor had to pull out, he felt he had to do something about it! Kody with the help of his mum Janine are baking and selling loads of cakes to become probably the first 11 year old in history to sponsor a dog show! Surprising also as Kody has a fear of dogs!
Kody, with help from two of his friends, Amber Cummings, age 11, and Molly-May Alexander, age 12 did the first cake sale today during the school lunch break and have raised £72. There is another cake sale in school tomorrow, so Kody is very close to his target!
“People are so kind, I’m a bit emotional. Kody has a dog phobia he is trying to overcome. I have no idea where it came from. He ran out in front of a car when he was a toddler, to avoid a dog walking along a path, but he didn’t hesitate at being certain he could raise the money for SN Dogs. They’ve invited him on their next big dog walk and I said they can help him overcome his fear at the same time!,” Janine added.
“I wanted to sponsor the dog show as I heard Drove vets had to pull out and that SNDogs needed £300 to pay towards running the festival. I immediately asked my mum if I could run a cake stall and she said yes! I am so excited I love doing projects like this it makes me feel all fizzy inside,” said Kody. “Kody was very concerned and asked me if we could sell dog themed cakes to raise the £300 needed to fund the dog show’s presence at this much loved family festival. I’ve roped my mum in on the baking too (she’s awesome). Kody couldn’t go to sleep last night chatting about it,” said Janine Bowler. Following a Facebook post he has already received £50 from a parent who owns Run Swindon, in Wood Street. Shortly after he was given another £50 from former Commonweal parent Alex Giles who runs Paw-Fit Pet Services. “Then semi-professional golfer Ian Murray donated £20 after my friend who was moving my piano for me last Friday found his dog, Max, (who ran off when he was walking him in Wroughton on Thursday night). Fillet of gurnard risotto Gurnard are the ugly sisters of the fish world that always get commented on by customers when I have them on the counter. They come in three types; red, grey and yellow (tubs). They have flat bellies and have wing like fins probably called wings! They don’t grow very big, but boy, are they tasty. Did I mention they were ugly too! These fish are bottom feeders around our shores. This does not mean that your derrière is at risk skinny dipping at Bournmouth but that they use their wings to stir up food from the seabed. Once a by-catch and used as bait by lobster fishermen they are now sought after by top chefs. Normally a by catch is not a very tasty alternative to overfished species, but with regards to the gurnard it is a very tasty equal and classically used in a bouillabaisse. Watch out as I suspect the gurnard will become as popular as the once cheap monkfish. Unlike the monkfish the gurnard has a soft sweet delicate flavour that will stand on its own. These fish are best filleted and the flesh becomes bright white when cooked. My favourite recipe is fillet of gurnard risotto. First sweat some shallots in a pan until soft then add a clove or two of garlic. Then stir in the Aborio rice and then add a few glugs of white wine and reduce. Then as with all risottos gradually add the stock (fish stock in this case) until the rice is just soft and creamy. Stir in some cooked peas. Then grill the fillets of gurnard (skin side down) and season. Stir in some cream and fresh parsley to the risotto and grate some parmesan over the top. Finally add the fillets of gurnard to the top of the risotto with a wedge of lemon and serve. Simple yet effective. You can buy a whole gurnard for around a fiver which means it is a good cheap midweek meal or a cracking starter if deep fried with tempura batter.

A dozen expressions of interest received for running community libraries A total of 12 expressions of interest in community-led library services have been received by Swindon Borough Council following the adoption of the town’s new library strategy. The Council’s cabinet agreed in December that the Council would support a network of five core libraries throughout the borough including Central, North Swindon, West Swindon, Highworth and Park. The new service also maintains professional library services, while providing support to develop community-led local library services. Local groups or individuals had until 31 January to submit expressions of interest in the non-core libraries and the Council’s officers are now supporting 12 groups to develop their plans and business cases. In addition to the work being undertaken on community-led libraries, the Council’s Cabinet earlier this month (8 Feb) agreed to authorise an options appraisal to consider alternative delivery models for the Council’s core library service.
The Council, in conjunction with the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), has already been working with Mutual Ventures, an independent organisation which specialises in developing charitable and public service mutual enterprises, to look at various delivery models for the town’s library service. This work responds to feedback from last year’s public consultation to look at the best approach of delivering the service. The delivery models that will be considered include keeping the library service in-house so it continues to be run by the Council, setting up a Local Authority Trading Company wholly owned by the Council with services delivered via a contract, or creating a Public Service Mutual (PSM). A PSM would be a new organisation that shares ownership of the service between the Council, communities and staff. Library Services would then be delivered via a contract between the Council and the PSM. The final model which will be assessed includes establishing a Joint Venture with an existing library service provider. The options appraisal would also look at whether the delivery model would take the form of a

Limited Company, Community Interest Company, Co-operative or Community Benefit Society and whether it should be a social enterprise or charity. Following last week’s Cabinet meeting, the Council will consult with the DCMS to secure appropriate external expertise and involve local councillors, library users, staff and other stakeholders to help inform the most appropriate approach and recommendations will be brought back to Cabinet on 26 April. Cllr Mary Martin, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “I am delighted there is such strong interest from a number of groups in keeping our community libraries running. “We will be working with the groups who have come forward to talk through their plans and ensure their proposals are robust enough to provide a sustainable service. At the same time, we will be working hard to find the best model for delivering our core service through the options appraisal so those five libraries have an equally sustainable future in the years to come.”
