HIGHWAYS Update

Traders looking to a brighter future six months after completion of new junction

Local businesses are reaching out to customers old and new six months after the completion of a multi-million pound junction upgrade. Bruce Street Bridges was redesigned in order to cope with forecast increased levels of traffic and resulted in the replacement of four mini roundabouts with a more efficient single roundabout. The 18-month long project also saw extensive flood alleviation work carried out with huge attenuation tanks built underneath the junction to store large quantities of water during periods of heavy rain. Despite the benefits of the scheme and the subsequent improvements to queuing traffic at peak times, the work caused inevitable disruption to residents and local businesses. Yet slowly but surely, local traders are reporting that business is beginning to pick up and hopes are high that customers who may have been wary of potential traffic jams in the area can now be tempted back. The improvements at Bruce Street Bridges have seen the creation of seven additional car parking spaces, including a disabled bay, a new loading bay outside the three shops, while the pedestrian area has also undergone a facelift. Swindon Borough Council is also trialling some alterations to the design of the junction at the entrance to Rodbourne Road at the request of local traders and local councillors, in an effort to improve the roundabout further. “The road has been improved as the traffic used to build up quite badly here and business is very slowly beginning to pick up,” said Daniel Wilson, Technical Director at AEL Lighting. “Unfortunately, we feel a lot of people are still a bit cautious about coming back to the area because the traffic was particularly bad while the work was going on. “Having said that we are still here, we’re still offering the same services and we have parking for customers and a loading bay which we did not have before. We want customers to come back and sample the personal service a local business can offer, which they may not receive with the larger firms.” PAGE 06

Steve Law, of Swindon Mobility, has been based at Bruce Street Bridges for the last 20 years. He said: “Our loyal customers have been fantastic and I would like to thank them for braving the disruption while the work was going on,” said Steve. “The area is a lot more customer-friendly and we’re looking forward to welcoming customers old and new.” Vincenzo Fruci, of My T Sharp barbers, also had a message for his loyal customers. “I want to thank all my customers for supporting me while the work was going on and to encourage any old ones to come back. “I’ve invested several thousand pounds in the shop, we’ve got new staff and we’re open six days a week. Come and support us.” Rodbourne Road features a host of independent traders and Kos Dixon of The Sewing Shop, close to the Designer Outlet Centre, is working closely with the Council to look into the possibility of setting up a business association for Rodbourne. Kos, who has been trading from The Sewing Shop in Rodbourne Road for over 35 years, said: “We have been here for a long time. Some of the businesses are second, third or fourth generation so we have a lot of established traders along Rodbourne Road. “There are nearly 50 independent traders, boutiques with their own charm and character. A lot of us offer advice to customers you don’t tend to get in the big shops – it’s the personal touch. We are easy to get to, we have parking and the road is now all clear. I have one message to shoppers – come back to Rodbourne.” Cllr Dale Heenan, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Sustainability, Highways and Transport, said: “Local traders are the heartbeat of a town’s retail offer and Rodbourne Road

is well worth a visit if you want that personal touch, as the traders themselves have described. In fact I have my hair cut there. “Rodbourne Road is still very much open for business. People may be surprised by the range of businesses available from hairdressers, restaurants and cafes, tailors and a DIY store, there really is something from everyone. Local councillors Steph Exell and Kevin Small continue to lobby and ensure the Highways team take local views into account.” Cllr Steph Exell, Ward Councillor for Mannington and Western, who has been working closely with the businesses, said: “The businesses in Rodbourne Road have experienced a difficult couple of years with the disruption at Bruce Street Bridges at one end and then Network Rail’s replacement of the railway bridge at the other. “We want to help those businesses flourish and encouraging people to use these local shops is an obvious step we can take. For me, Rodbourne Road is one of Swindon’s hidden gems as it has so many independent traders all specialising in their own goods and services. “The close proximity of Rodbourne Road to the Outlet Centre puts these great shops just a stone’s throw away from thousands of shoppers, so next time you’re in the area don’t forget to stop off and see what they have to offer.”

Town Centre Focus Council to seek views on proposed changes to Town Centre PSPO Proposed variations to an order designed to curb anti-social behaviour in the town centre will be available for the public to comment on from the 27th of October until the 8th of December. The current Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), which was introduced almost a year ago, focuses on issues such as keeping dogs on leads, begging, aggressive charity collecting and drinking in public. It also prohibits peddling or street trading, marking surfaces without the permission of the council, as well as skateboarding. Following feedback from members of the public and local businesses and close monitoring of behaviour in the area, Swindon Borough Council, Wiltshire Police and inSwindon BID Company have proposed a number of amendments to the existing order. PSPOs were introduced as part of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 and are primarily aimed at changing and improving behaviour. Anyone caught breaching the order will be advised to stop their activity and, if they fail to do so, a fixed penalty notice may be issued. The fixed penalty is set at £100 and, if not paid, could result in court fines of up to £1,000. Since the PSPO was introduced in the town centre, officers from the Council, Wiltshire Police and inSwindon have spoken to and offered advice to more than 2,000 individuals who were contravening the order. As every individual approached stopped their activity following the advice, no fines have been issued. Following the success of the ‘warning and informing’ policy, it is proposed to slightly extend increase the area of the PSPO so it now covers Regent Circus, the public thoroughfares into the town centre from Swindon railway station and the area around Spring Gardens. The proposed amendments to the order include allowing authorised events in the town centre to be exempt from the alcohol restriction in the PSPO, while it is also proposed to extend the skateboarding prohibition to include car parks and pedestrianised areas. ANYTHING SWINDON

Under the new restrictions dog owners would be required to keep their pets on a lead no longer than two metres in length and it is proposed to remove the restriction on peddling and street trading as the activities can be adequately dealt with by existing legislation and policy. It is also proposed to remove the restrictions on marking surfaces/chalking and aggressive charity collecting as shoppers and businesses have reported there is no longer an issue with these activities. A variation on the restriction around begging has been proposed, which prohibits begging in a manner which causes, or is likely to cause, nuisance or annoyance to any member of the public or business. The consultation notes that officers will not issue any fixed penalty notices to individuals who are found to be genuinely homeless or in a position where they are unable to pay a fine, in line with the Council’s policy. Help and advice from partner agencies will continue to be offered to those people in need. An additional restriction on cycling in pedestrianised areas is also being put forward for inclusion in the PSPO following a number of complaints.

The consultation will open tomorrow (27 Oct) and run for six weeks, closing at 12noon on Thursday, 8 December. Members of the public can access the consultation by visiting: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SwindonPSPO Cllr Oliver Donachie, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness, said: “The restrictions in the PSPO are there to clamp down on certain behaviours which are having a detrimental effect on people who are visiting the town centre. “It is not about fining people, as the first year of the order has shown. It is instead about making the town centre a place that people want to visit. We want to educate people so they refrain from anti-social behaviour and it is pleasing that every single person who was spoken to for breaching the order stopped what they were doing. “We have monitored the original restrictions in the order and obtained feedback on what we need to change, which is why we are carrying out this consultation, so I would encourage people to let us know what they think about the proposed alterations to the PSPO.”

BRIGHTER FUTURES Brighter Futures says thanks to a million fundraisers! Brighter Futures said thanks a million to all its fundraisers, supporters and volunteers as the charity reaches the magic £1 million mark for its Radiotherapy Appeal. A special event held on Thursday 20 October, hosted by the Mayor of Swindon Eric Shaw, was held to recognise the efforts of local people and to receive three substantial donations which will tip the appeal total into seven figures. The Dr Thomas Cranston Wilson Trust presented a cheque for another £50,000 which was pledged to match a challenging target for local Rotarians in their 15/16 year. Rotary Clubs from Swindon, Marlborough and Royal Wootton Bassett who together raised £70,000 exceeded their target thanks to their amazing fundraising efforts and a generous donation from Swindon North Rotarian Tony Long.

PAGE 08

During the evening, talks were given by Roger Hill, Chairman of Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Rotarian Howard Small and Dr Claire Blesing, Clinical Director Oncology and Haematology at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. Jennifer Green, Head of Fundraising for Brighter Futures, said: “We’re so thrilled to have reached the £1 million mark and we continue to be amazed and humbled by the efforts and generosity of local people to help us reach our goal. “Every penny raised is a step closer to bringing vital cancer treatment closer to home for families in Swindon and Wiltshire for generations to come. “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped the appeal so far. However, we can’t stop now and already we are focusing on how we

reach the next £1million in our £2.9 million total.” All money raised for the Radiotherapy Appeal will go towards the £2.9 million needed to fund the new Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust radiotherapy unit on the Great Western Hospital site. Cancer patients in Swindon and Wiltshire currently face weeks of daily visits to and from the nearest radiotherapy centre in Oxford for treatment.

DOGS OF THE MONTH This month we are going to feature 2 DOGS OF THE MONTH – NANUK and HANNAH who are looking for special homes!

NANUK (Nuk for short) is an 11 year old black mixed Belgian Shepherd boy. Although his back end does occasionally go, he still loves his walks and being outside. He is easy going and eager to say hello to all dogs although he isn’t keen on spaniels.. Nuk is good with children and will let them pet him. Sadly Nuk loves to bark and chase cats so wouldn’t be able to live with any.

SNDogs went back to Big Yellow Storage in Swindon at the beginning of October to collect £111.49 which they raised from their in-store Marathons. Thank You Big Yellow! Pictured are Tom, Mel & Michelle with Jess and SNDogs - Gizmo and Ziggy. HANNAH is a Spanish Mastin, less than a year old and is a big cuddly puppy. Hannah would be fine to live with another dog if you have the space. She hasn’t had any training and since she is a big dog would benefit from learning the basics. Hannah has grown up with children while she was living in Spain so could live with children that are used to dogs and that are over 5 years old. If you can give NANUK or HANNAH a home please email: sndrescue@gmail.com

The Question High Street vs Online Estate Agents? For a few years now, there has been a long standing argument between traditional high street estate agents and the new online agents over who is better suited to sell your home. High street estate agents view the online community as amateurs with little experience and no local knowledge, and therefore inferior. Online agents often view the traditional estate agents as over-priced and outdated. We spoke to Keith Angell, Company director at Carringtons Swindon who has looked at both options with very mixed results. Keith says “It’s not just about saying Here’s a house, would you like to buy it? It’s about What should we ask for this house? How should we market it? What’s the pricing strategy? What’s the marketing strategy? Who will we select to buy it? It’s about negotiating the deal and ensuring it gets through to a successful completion.” Keith also says “We recently moved from the High Street to online and although there are some great advantages to us as a business which reduces the cost to the consumer we have found moving online to be less successful than we imagined.” PAGE 12

“The benefits of using an online estate agent are mainly to be had by the agent as you do a considerable amount of the work involved in selling your home. “

with the purchase of your house. Through thoroughly vetting your potential buyer we can ensure that the sale will proceed in a timely manner with no nasty last minute shocks.“

“This may include listing your property yourself, including uploading your own photos and writing your own description. In many cases you will need to pay an up-front fee or agree to pay their fees whether or not they sell your home.”

“You can rest assured that we are there to answer your questions from the moment you instruct us to sell your home until the sale has successfully completed.”

“The online agents are open 24/7 so you can arrange viewings from the comfort of your own home and you can update your details as and when you like. “ “However, things have moved on considerably and now you can do, just about, everything that an online agent can do on a High Street agents website plus, you get the added benefit of the local knowledge and years of experience that the High Street agent can offer.” “Here at Carringtons we give our clients realistic advice based on our many years of local experience, we can advise on the best price that you can reasonably expect for your property then find someone who is in a position to proceed

So, Who Has The Advantage, High Street or Online? Carringtons believe that we can do everything an online agent can do and so much more. Our customers clearly believe that we will get the best price for their property and offer them the best service via our local knowledge & experienced friendly staff. Why not give us a call on 01793 486622 if you are thinking of buying, selling or letting and let us show you the difference.

Community News Harbour Christmas Appeal 2016

We live in a society where there seems to be a pill for everything and doctor surgeries have been increasingly coming under fire for dishing out tablets quicker than you can actually finish your sentence about your ailments. But one woman in Swindon is on a mission to try and get people in the town to realise that diet is the key to our health and can cure all kinds of illnesses. Nutritional Therapist Alison Aldred, who lives in central Swindon, runs a business called Nutritionali-Healthy and she’s so passionate about her belief in the healing benefits of food because she has actually been helped herself. Alison used to suffer with crippling asthma and thanks to her own education in nutritional therapy, is now a very fit woman who no longer struggles with her breathing. Alison, who is a member of the British Association of Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy (BANT) and the Complementary and Natural Health

SWINDON U3A MEMBERS DO THEIR BEST FOR BRIGHTER FUTURES Members of two of the U3A groups (over 150 groups in all) have had great success in raising money for the Brighter Futures Radiotherapy Appeal. The enthusiastic members of the Line Dancing Groups have held various social events throughout the year. On top of having great exercise for mind, body and memory and hearing great music, this friendly group of 3rd Agers have contributed over £2000 to the appeal during this year. At the end of September, the U3A Choir held their last concert under the musical Directorship of Sheila Harrod. 180 people filled Bath Road Methodist Church and enjoyed “An Evening with the U3A Choir” with guest performers the ladies of the Swindon Polish Choir. The programme included songs from the sixties, along with the wonderful Can You Hear Me by Bob Chilcot, a folk song medley and for many, the highlight was a Gershwin Medley specially arranged for the choir by West PAGE 14

care Council (CNHC) said: “With my help, you can make the right dietary and lifestyle choices to improve how you feel and look. You may have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, inflammatory arthritis, or irritable bowel syndrome and wonder if this is how you will feel for the rest of your life. But it doesn’t have to be like this. You can make a positive decision for your future health.” She added: “I see people of all ages and backgrounds and I love seeing the positive changes in people. Food really can heal us and too many people are eating things that are making them ill without realising it.”

Swindon charity The Harbour Project is releasing a new short film this week to mark the launch of its first Christmas Appeal. The film, produced by Swindon-based Create Studios, shows the impact of the charity’s work on newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers. The charity provides help and support to people who often arrive with nothing. A daily drop-in centre offers social activities as well as help and advice on issues as diverse as health, housing and the British way of life. First set up over twenty years ago, The Harbour Project has seen a huge increase in its workload over recent years, with asylum seekers coming from the world’s hot spots, - places where war and violence are a daily reality. Each year the charity helps hundreds of people - as well as information and advice, there are English classes, art workshops and skills training. The Christmas Appeal aims to take advantage of Grow Your Tenner, a scheme running this week on charity giving website localgiving. org - for every ten pounds someone donates, the website will donate the same amount to the charity.

www.nutritionali-healthy.com. End Musical Director Paul Maguire. The Polish Choir provided colour and contrast their delightfully tuneful and lively renditions of Polish Folk Songs. The net result from the evening was £1050 towards Brighter Futures, The choir is now urgently searching for a new Musical Director as well as a pianist to carry on the good work of Sheila Harrod and take the choir forward . Anyone interested should contact Sheila Dunn on 01793 529678.

“We want our Christmas Appeal to make a real difference”, says charity Chairman David Rowlands. “The people arriving at our door have so many complex needs, we’re really being stretched to the limit just to provide the basic support needed.” “The Grow Your Tenner scheme will only run for a few days, but it is a great chance for people to double their money when they give - and to help in a really direct way.” Anyone wanting to donate to the Christmas Appeal can go to localgiving.org and search for The Harbour Project. The new film, Harbour is a House, can be seen on the charity’s website - www.harbourproject.org.uk

Community News Cllr Kevin Parry Conservative – Covingham & Dorcan Ward Nythe Green Day I would like to say a big thank you to Swindon 21st Cubs & Beavers from Coleview and all of the residents that came out and supported the Nythe Green Day, especially to the children, who were working towards their Community badge. There were 28 of us in total and we managed to cover virtually the whole of Nythe. Swindon 21st Cubs and Beavers meet up at Coleview Community Centre on Wednesday evenings (Beavers 5.30 pm – 6.30 pm and Cubs 6.45 pm – 8.15 pm).

Road Resurfacing Meres I am pleased to say that the long overdue road repairs in the Meres, Liden have now been carried out. I arranged for this to be included in the works programme following a number of concerns I received from residents. Parking Covingham School We have received complaints that parents are parking their cars across residents’ drives around Covingham Park Primary School, blocking access and even parking on private drives. Traffic Officers have been out and will now carry out regular inspections to make sure that no one is illegally parked.

Meres Meeting

Cllr Kevin Parry

I was delighted to attend the Meres A.G.M which was well attended. The Meres Assocation has grown in strength over the years and this was shown at the meeting by all that attended. I think that these meetings are great as I am able to listen to residents concerns and help where I can. I picked up some case work which I have worked on. I am sure that as you walk around the Meres & Liden Lagoon you will have seen the improvements made by the Association and helpers.

Parks Library and Walcot Library still under threat Emma, Steve and Abdul has supported a community led campaign to Save Parks Library from closure. A clear case has been made to the Council that Parks Library is a well-used, well-loved library which clearly benefits the community which needs to be kept open.

I am pleased to say that Lee and his team have fitted six new small bins around Nythe were litter is dropped most. We have had a new bin fitted outside the shop which has a cover so hopefully this will stop people dumping large items in the bin that should not be put there. The new notice board is now up which will include all the latest news from Nythe Parish Council so please keep an eye out for meeting dates etc. Road Resurfacing Eldene I am very pleased to see that roads in Eldene have been resurfaced, following my repeated requests for the work to be carried out. Residents had raised this to me on a number of occasions. ANYTHING SWINDON

However, we fear that Tory Councillors have already made up their minds and won’t listen to voices from within the community. The final decision on the future of Libraries will not be made by the Tory Cabinet until December. In the meantime local councillors will continue to talk to people from the council and the community about retaining a library service in the area.

Scheduled Roadworks for Beaufort Green and Bisley Close Road Resurfacing work is scheduled for Beaufort Green in Park North (expected to start 31 Oct for two days), and Bisley Close in Walcot (expected to start 31 Oct for two days). Short-term road closures will be required to complete the works, but access to properties will be provided at all times. 20mph Speed Limit in Walcot West We are pleased to announce that Walcot West will become a 20 MPH Zone after residents approved the plan. The scheme will go to formal advertisement by the end of November, with the aim of implementing the scheme by April next year. However, proposed Limited Waiting in the streets off Burford Avenue will not be going ahead as the majority of residents were against the proposals. This is because a consensus view has not been reached by residents over the last 3 years on any proposed scheme. Your Labour councillors have objected to the plans to impose parishing on Swindon. We have asked for a referendum. The proposed savings are only £3.2M. The Cabinet report shows the deprivation effect has been ignored and the treatment of the town centre is unclear. More Cuts SBC is closing all the public toilets next January including disabled, all except the ones in formal public parks. They’re planning to put up allotment fees by 43% (equivalent to a £22.50 increase for a standard plot) as well. The green waste collections are going up by £10 per year. East Wichel Restrictive Parking Scheme The parking restrictions are being fully enforced from 14 November. The 26 space car park at the local centre should be open by Christmas. A review on the parking will take place next year. Please let us know if you have any suggestions. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any local issues or concerns.

Digital Parental Control Alex, who has had a long career in telecoms, had his lightbulb moment when his son Artyom asked to have his own first mobile phone.

Mobile service designed by Wiltshire Company to help keep children safe! A REVOLUTIONARY app service designed to keep children safe on their phones has been launched by a team based in Cricklade. The Supotco service, created by entrepreneur Alex Mitchell’s company, allows parents to remotely manage the download and screentime of apps and games, decide which websites their child can visit and screen their calls and contacts. It can even locate where their youngsters are.

“There isn’t anything at all out there at the moment which is like this,” he said. “There are apps which have some of the features we have, but nothing which brings them all together.” Alex explained: “Our aim is to enable parents to manage the inevitable introduction of their children to the interconnected world. Supotco provides a simple way for parents to ensure their children avoid unnecessary contacts, harassment and cyber bullying when using a mobile phone. “If the parent does not add a feature, app or contact then the child cannot access that feature and neither can that feature access the child.” Already, mobile network operators are expressing an interest in offering Supotco as part of a package for customers.

Its creators believe it is a world-first, with no other app offering such comprehensive protection features for children.

The app de-activates every piece of functionality on any android phone on any network, rendering it completely docile, unable to send or receive calls or messages or to access websites or apps. Through a dashboard, parents can gradually bring the phone back to lifeby setting the rules on who their child can call or message and who can call or message them, which apps they can access and which websites they can visit.

The company, which has a six-strong team has already attracted investment of around £150,000. Further funding will help the team effectively market and evolve the service.

It also lets parents see where their child is on a map and the child can call for help at any time by holding down their contacts button. Parents instantly receive the help request from the children along with current location and status information.

Children need an Android phone to operate Supotco, with the parents using an online dashboard to customise it, which can be accessed from any

And Supotco isn’t just aimed at parents. The simple interface and “Help” function means it could be a much cheaper alternative to panic buttons older people use to call for help.

Robert Buckland MP supports charity’s call to close the autism employment gap

Robert Buckland, Member of Parliament for South Swindon, is welcoming a campaign to close the autism employment gap. Robert was one of over 100 MPs to attend the launch of a new National Autistic Society report and campaign in Parliament on 31st October, which highlighted the low levels of employment among autistic people. The campaign is calling for autistic people to have access to specialist support to help them find and stay in work and a national programme to raise employers’ awareness of the skills and potential of autistic people. The parliamentary launch of the campaign comes on the same day as the launch of the Government’s Work, Health and Disability green paper, which sets out its plans to help more people with disabilities and long term conditions into work. The National Autistic Society has released a short film, shot from the point of view of an autistic adult experiencing ‘too much information’ in a series of job interviews.

The film’s star, played by autistic actor Max Green, becomes increasingly overwhelmed by anxiety and uncertainty about what’s being asked of him, to the point where he’s unable to demonstrate his ability to do the job. At the end of the film we see Max, outside the offices, upset and overwhelmed. The film finishes with the message: “I’m not unemployable, I’m autistic”. Robert Buckland MP said: “I continue to take a strong interest in autism provision and know many families who, like my own, are dealing with autism and what it means. The National Autistic Society estimates that over 1 in 100 people in the United Kingdom alone have autism and I believe that it is vital that we continue to campaign to raise awareness of the condition. I strongly welcome the National Autistic Society’s campaign. “Many autistic people like Max, from the charity’s campaign video, who I had the pleasure of meeting, clearly have much to offer in the workplace. ANYTHING SWINDON

We need to make sure that employers know this and are able to open their doors to autistic people.” Robert continued to explain: “During my time as an MP, I have campaigned for the rights of people with autism and served as Chair on an All- Party Parliamentary Group on Autism. The aim of the group is to raise awareness of autism in parliament, and to campaign and lobby for increased awareness and improved support for people with autism and their carers “When I was the Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Autism, I established a SEND Commission that aims to improve the experiences and prospects for young people with SEND. This involved taking autistic and SEN concerns straight to the government by providing MPs and House of Lords Peers with evidence and arguments in favour of better support for SEND and autism; a chance these young people would otherwise not have had. I also introduced a ten-minute Bill to Parliament calling on the government to improve access to health and social care services for people with autism spectrum disorders. “Locally, I helped to establish a SEND Network for parents, secured autism-friendly film screenings and campaigned to improve health, education and social care services for local children, and I have worked very closely with charities like Ambitious about Autism and the National Autistic Society.” The autism employment gap is part of the National Autistic Society’s threeyear Too Much Information campaign, which aims to transform public understanding of autism and open up the world for autistic people. More than 1 in 100 people are on the autism spectrum. This means that someone sees, hears and feels the world in a different, often more intense, way to other people. Autistic people often find social situations difficult, can struggle to process

information quickly and may be highly sensitive to sound or light or smells. This can make finding and staying in a job very difficult if managers, employers and colleagues don’t understand autism. Not all autistic people are able to work, but, with understanding from their employer and colleagues, as well as reasonable adjustments to the interview process and workplace, many autistic people can be a real asset to businesses. Mark Lever, Chief Executive of the National Autistic Society, said: “Autistic people have a huge contribution to make to our economy and society, including in the workplace. But they’ve been repeatedly overlooked. “We need leadership from politicians to tackle the autism employment gap once and for all, and so we are really pleased to have the support of Robert. Today’s Work, Health and Disability green paper from the Government starts a welcome conversation about how to open up the workplace for disabled people, including autistic people. “Many employers tell us they’re keen to recruit more autistic people but they don’t know where to go for support and they’re worried about getting it wrong. So we’re pleased that the green paper sees that employers have a key role to play in reducing the disability employment gap. For autism, businesses can follow the growing number of companies, such as GCHQ and Microsoft, which are supporting autistic people into work through specialist recruitment programmes or work experience. “We believe there needs to be a national programme to make employers aware of the skills and potential of autistic people. But we also need to ensure that each autistic person gets the autism-specific support they need to find and stay in work. “Not all autistic people are able to work. But many are and are desperate to find a job which reflects their talent and interests. With a little understanding and small adjustments to the workplace, they can be a real asset to businesses across the UK. Autistic people deserve that chance.”

Smiles Update When called into the treatment room I was again met by Mark who had already carried out the initial part of my dental plan a few weeks earlier. Mark is fully aware of my fear of the dentist and once again made me feel calm while explaining the procedure to remove my badly damaged tooth. Despite marks detailed explanation of the procedure I knew that any minute now I would endure the first of two injections to numb the gum around my tooth. This month saw me attending Smiles for the 4th appointment in my dental plan, this time more nervous than ever I entered knowing I would be having a difficult tooth extraction in preparation for my impressions of my teeth in preparation for my whitening kit later this month. Waiting anxiously in the waiting room an elderly lady entered from the treatment room, tissue against face and with a slur in her voice as she attempted to book in her next appointment. This would have been a great opportunity to make for the door as this is the whole reason for my fear of the dentist in the first place. Needles, the cracking of the tooth being pulled from the jaw and the taste of blood were all thoughts on my mind, but that again would be the easy option. Having come this far into my dental plan, it would have been crazy to turn my back on what in the long term would make me more confident and ultimately give me back my smile.

PAGE 28

With fists clenched and body rigid the first injection was admitted, and although the initial split second was painful, it wasn’t as bad as I remembered the pain to be. Yes, it was a needle, and with all needles, we get some amount of pain, but this wasn’t at all how I had remembered an injection into my gum to feel. Within seconds my gum became numb followed very quickly by my lip and tongue. Mark then started to carry out the process of removing my tooth always ensuring that I was okay and that I felt comfortable throughout, unfortunately as Mark continued to extract the tooth I started to feel immense pain at the root of my tooth. Mark then administered another injection to numb further the lower part of my gum explaining that in some cases it does require more than one or two further injections as everyone in the chair is different. This was a long procedure due to the poor condition of the tooth and as ex

pected the tooth was removed in multiple pieces, so not as straight forward as most extractions. Once the tooth was removed, Mark ex plained to me that the gum around my tooth should heal quite quickly if there are no complications and insisted I took some pain relief over the next 24 hours to help with the pain. In all honesty, I turned up for my extraction knowing there would be pain and pain is what I got, but not as much as I expected and in fairness, to Mark and the team at Smiles I haven’t suffered through any of the procedures carried out. Next appointment in my dental plan will involve taking impressions of my teeth in preparation for my whitening procedure, in my next diary in the December magazine I will be detailing this procedure and hopefully providing you with before and after photographs to show the results.

TALK IS CHEAP Ryan Martin returns with new coaching set-up

Swindon Welterweight boxing prospect Ryan Martin has been confirmed as an addition to the already packed ‘Talk is Cheap’ card being held at the Oasis leisure Centre on 26th November. With a current record of seven wins and no defeats, Martin has been out of action since his impressive points win over the durable Lithuanian Arvydas Trizno in June.

At the events press launch last week, the former amateur England International said that he wants to put on a good show for his loyal fans, he said “I would like to have had a few more fights by now but as I’m only 22 I have a long career ahead of me and the opportunities will come. The hunger is still there and I have good support and want them to see me in a fight, I want someone who’s going to stand and fight, tough and strong and want to give back to people who regularly buy tickets to see me.

When asked about the future Martin was optimistic “This will probably be my last fight of 2016 but I want to be busy in 2017, I need the right fights at the right time. I’m 100% fit, no injuries and I’m in the right place mentally. He added “this is one of the best bills I’ve seen in a Swindon show and am really looking forward to it”. The bill is headlined by undefeated Light Heavyweight ‘Sniper” Sam Smith with the exciting Luke ‘the Duke’ Watkins as Chief Support.

It was also announced he had been training with the well-respected local trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick over recent weeks and is set to be in his corner for his next fight.

Also featuring is the well-travelled former IBO Intercontinental champion, Kelvin Young is having his ‘retirement fight’ in front of his home fans.

Martin said “I thought a few changes need to be made training wise, I trained with paddy as an amateur but I’m taking it a fight at a time and we’ll see where we are after this fight.”

Tickets are still available from £35 -£70 via neilsonboxing.co.uk or the ticket hotline 01793 833468

Advice for small businesses AMS Accountancy Ltd. 01793 818400

My business partner spent the profits from our business – am I now responsible for the debts? If your business is a Partnership, not a Limited Company or a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), all partners are “jointly and severally liable” for the Partnership debts. If there are no Partnership funds for the bills, creditors can chase you personally for the money – even though your partner took it out of the business. In a Limited Company or a Limited Liability Partnership, you would not be liable for these debts. Here, the monies and assets would be owned by the business itself. Exceptions: loans with a personal guarantee and trading while insolvent or fraudulently. www.ask-ams.co.uk @AMSAccountancy www.ams-accountancy.co.uk

Anyone for Bowls?

COUNTY COUNTYGROUND GROUNDBOWLS BOWLSCLUB CLUB

CCGG BBCC

Welcomes Welcomesnew newmembers members Contact Contact07943 07943375685 375685 After 91 years County Ground Bowls Club has folded and as from 1st October 2016 merged with Swindon Bowls Club.

Swindon Bowls Club are proud to welcome all County Ground Bowling and Social members to Swindon Bowls Club and hope that they will have a long happy and successful association with Swindon Bowls Club. Founded in 1908 the club has been one of the most prominent clubs in Wiltshire for many years.

The club became unified in 2003 the set up being a Management Committee (with elected members of both genders) and men’s and ladies committees to oversee bowling matters. Most recently the County Ground Bowls PRINTED PRINTED AND DESIGNED AND DESIGNED BY BY SCREAMINGMEDIA SCREAMINGMEDIA Club closed down (this being due to increased cost by Swindon Borough Council imposed on them). The decision resulted in the Club joining us on the 1st October 2016, the name of Swindon Bowls Club still remains.

The man who was the driving force behind the formation of the club was Major Dixon, who wanted the club for railway workers in the town.

In many cases, the students had no experience of bowls and some never even knew the game existed!! A great time was however had by all and the visits were so successful that future events are planned for 2017.

The green was first located at the rear of the County Ground Hotel, near Swindon Cricket Club. But in 1911 the club relocated to Shrivenham Road with a new green laid on land donated by local landowners the Goddard family.

Who knows, one of them might be be a future Champion of Champions. Swindon Bowls Club would like to extend the hospitality of the club to any other schools, groups, and junior associations to try the game. For more information contact Carl Fernandes on 01793 614255. We also have a website which is regularly updated with news and events, please visit us at the website below.

(Swindon BC County Fours Winners 1930)

The original pavilion was two GWR railway carriages the existing pavilion, this was officially opened on the 22nd February 1969. The club was an all male establishment until April 1968 when the Ladies Section of Swindon Bowls Club was formed. In 2002 a skittle alley was added which is used by both men and ladies teams. PAGE 34

In the summer of 2016, Derek Caddy was contacted by the Head of Curriculum Support, St Joseph’s School, to ask if small groups of students could be given the opportunity to experience the game of bowls and of course, the answer was an immediate “YES”. Since then, three sessions have been held at both the County Ground Bowls Club and Swindon Bowls Club and the students were tutored by Derek, Carl Fernandes and Tony Dawkins.
