Wyvern Pantomine

WYVERN GEARING UP FOR PANTO SEASON The Wyvern Theatre in Swindon is thrilled to present the fairest of all pantomimes this December with the enchanting tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – starring Adam Woodyatt as Chambers, the Wicked Queen’s henchman.

Adam Woodyatt said; “I absolutely love performing in front of an audience as it’s so different to camera - I love the reaction of the audience. I am very much looking forward to spending the Christmas season at the Wyvern Theatre, which I know has a reputation for staging outstanding pantomimes.”

“I am really thrilled that one of the nation’s best-known actors is going to spend Christmas at the Wyvern.” said Theatre Director Derek Aldridge. “Adam’s recent live performances have received widespread critical acclaim and now he’ll be in 50 totally live episodes of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. With the pantomime just a couple of weeks away, cast rehearsals will soon begin and the Wyvern will be filled with the sounds of ‘Oh no it isn’t’ and ‘He’s behind you’!

Once again the Wyvern will be presenting a pantomime for the whole family packed with laughs, songs, dances, heroes, villains and the news that Adam Woodyatt will lead this magical show is very exciting.”

Adam is best-known for his role as Ian Beale in EastEnders, a part which he has played since the soap first aired 30 years ago. Adam also regularly guests on TV game and panel shows and has hosted programmes such as Value For Money, Dreamhouse and National Lottery Live.

With cracking costumes, sensational song and dance numbers, stunning sets, an applebundance of festive fun and as audiences have come to expect from Swindon’s number one pantomime, plenty of audience participation – it’s the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season all together – oh yes it is!

Adam is also no stranger to the stage and will return to the Wyvern having played Billy in Mother Goose back in 1989. He is sure to delight the children of Swindon as they get the chance to boo and hiss when he takes on the role of Chambers. He’ll be bringing along a very magical mirror, seven little dwarfs and of course the lovely Snow White!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is a muchloved fairy-tale as old as the tradition of Pantomime itself. Children can enjoy the magic of their first theatrical experience as they join Snow White in the enchanted forest on her magical adventure at the Wyvern Theatre this Christmas.

Wyvern Pantomine Adam Woodyatt will be joined on stage by Wyvern Theatre pantomime favourite, David Ashley. David returns to Swindon for a fifth year after playing Ugly Sister Windy Wendy in Cinderella, Abanazar in Aladdin, Dame Trot in Jack and the Beanstalk and Sarah the Cook in Dick Whittington.

while two teams of local children will be playing the Seven Dwarfs. The talented cast will be belting out hits such as Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off, Olly Murs’ Wrapped Up and Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out For A Hero in attempts to get the audiences singing along and in the true festive spirit!

Tickets for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are priced from just £14.50, with special rates for families, groups of 10+ and for schools. Book your seats today or you won’t be able to look yourself in the mirror! Also returning is Jenny-Ann Topham, who played the Wicked Stepmother in the Wyvern’s 2011 pantomime Cinderella and will be taking to the stage this year as Queen Griselda. Other principle cast members include The Man In The Mirror played by Christopher McKay, Snow White played by Sophie Camble and Prince Henry played by James Raynal,

Brighter Futures Update

Brighter Futures Feature Brighter Futures – How to honour the memory of a loved one Whether you have lost a loved one recently or in the past, certain days or times of the year may renew your grief. The festive season can be especially hard when memories of a loved one being part of the celebrations can heighten that sense of loss.

Some may want to raise money by holding an event, making a special collection, or even setting themselves a special challenge. Others may want to make a regular gift, make a single gift, or mark special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries or Christmas.

It is often important for survivors to cope with their grief by finding a way to honour the memory of a loved one in a way that can bring comfort and joy to family and friends. Starting a Tribute Fund in memory of your loved one is an increasingly popular way to honour and cherish their memory. Donations in their name leave a lasting legacy of care.

Your Special Tribute Fund… Your ‘Special Tribute’ Fund gives you the opportunity to bring together photos, memories, music and video to create a special place where you and your family and friends can gain comfort and share and celebrate the life of a loved one at any time you choose. Once it’s established, anyone can contribute to the Tribute Fund in their own way, and whenever they wish.

Whether you are recently bereaved or your loved one died some time ago, setting up a Special Tribute Fund is the perfect way to ensure that their memory lives on. You can set up your Special Tribute Fund page at brighterfutures.muchloved.org

If you need any help setting up your Special Tribute page then please do not hesitate to contact us on the details below: Email: fundraising@gwh.nhs.uk Tel: 01793 605631 Web: www.brighterfuturesgwh.nhs.uk

Drove Pets Update There is no specific antidote for chocolate poisoning, but if you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate contact your veterinary surgery immediately as quick veterinary treatment could save your dog’s life.

“Feeding your dog Christmas leftovers” Paws up anyone who eats way too much on Christmas Day, then spends Boxing Day paying the price? Mine are both up! Still it’s only once a year and it’s a great time to get together and over indulge. Whereas too much food and drink makes us unwell and sluggish, the effects could be much more serious for your pet. The result of over feeding your dog Christmas leftovers may be limited to some stomach pain and diarrhoea, but may have more serious consequences in some. Chicken, turkey or other small bones can splinter in the throat. An excess of fatty foods can cause inflammation of the pancreas which can be very painful and make your pet extremely unwell. This can usually be treated with intravenous fluids and medication, but can be very serious in some dogs. Some dogs are prone to stomach bloat ( a large build up of gas in the stomach) and this may be brought on by feeding larger than usual meals which again can be extremely serious, especially if the stomach becomes twisted. If your dog shows any symptoms of retching, vomiting, enlargement of the stomach or stomach pain they should be checked by your vet as soon as possible. Many dogs, like us, love chocolate, unfortunately their liver is unable to process a chemical in chocolate and cocoa called theobromine. The theobromine passes into the blood stream very quickly and as it is not broken down continues to circulate in the dog’s body causing the heart to beat rapidly. The darker the chocolate the higher the concentration of theobromine and the more toxic it is, but even white chocolate contains some cocoa, so may be poisonous in large enough amounts. The dog may vomit, have muscle tremors, hyperactivity or fit which could lead to death. ANYTHING SWINDON

Prevention is always best, avoid feeding your dog or cat chocolate as treats (and make sure your children know not to as well). Any chocolate presents should be wrapped and kept in cupboards out of reach, not left under the tree. Any chocolate decorations on the tree should be on the high branches out of reach. Other treats to avoid giving your dog are raisins or grapes which may cause renal failure in some dogs and macadamia nuts which can also be poisonous. Yew tree, holly, mistletoe and lilies are toxic if eaten, so these should be kept out of reach of pets too. The Christmas tree can be hazardous for pets too, cover up wires from fairy lights so they cannot be chewed and burn or electrocute your pet. Fallen tree needles can be sharp and stick into your pet’s paws. Make sure your tree is well anchored so it cannot be knocked over. Christmas decorations should preferably be unbreakable and not too small, young pets and cats can be particularly interested in decorations so avoid any tinsel or ribbon which may be swallowed and cause blockages in the gut. And remember Christmas can be a sad and stressful time for many pets with extra people and noise so make sure they have a safe haven to escape to when things get too busy! I hope you and your pets have a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.

Always remember, if you have any concerns about your pet, please contact your Vet.

Charity Feature

THEATRES TO COLLECT ADVENT CALENDAR DONATIONS FOR LOCAL CHILDREN’S CHARITY This December, the magical stage show Santa Claus and the Christmas Adventure comes to Swindon Arts Centre and the cast are helping to bring joy to some of Swindon’s most deserving children. The Wyvern Theatre and Arts Centre have teamed up with local children’s charity Hop Skip and Jump to launch a special Christmas Advent Calendar drive. They are calling for donations of Advent Calendars, which will be presented to boys and girls from the Hop, Skip and Jump Children’s Centre by Santa’s Elves when they make a special appearance on Friday 27th November. Advent Calendars can be dropped off at the Wyvern Theatre Ticket Office or the Arts Centre reception at any time until Thursday 26th November.

Centre this year, and we wanted to engage with a deserving local charity that would benefit from a visit from Santa’s Elves in the run up to Christmas. Hop Skip and Jump provide an invaluable service to local children with disabilities and special needs and their families and we’re really looking forward to delivering the Advent calendars to them.

Hop Skip and Jump provide flexible and immediate respite care for children and young adults. They have four large centres (Bristol, Cheltenham, Swindon and Wigan), providing a variety of indoor and outdoor activities to engage and inspire children with disabilities and special educational needs.

We’re calling it Santa Claus and the Christmas ADVENT-ure! It would be wonderful if local people and businesses were able to make a donation.’

At Hop Skip and Jump, children and adult users experience a sense of space and freedom within a safe, supervised environment where they are actively encouraged to take part in activities that build self-confidence, social skills and self-esteem. Their high quality care provides parents and carers with some much needed respite: time to rest; spend time with their other children; or simply go for a coffee with friends.

Santa Claus and the Christmas Adventure will be at Swindon Arts Centre from Sat 12 – Thu 24 December.

Hop Skip and Jump’s simple vision is to prevent family collapse, to encourage and promote the development of children with disabilities and special needs, and, most importantly, to provide the highest quality respite care for those who need it most. Marketing Manager at Swindon Theatres, Laura James said this of the campaign: ‘We’re really excited to welcome Santa Claus and the Christmas Adventure to the Arts

Councillor Updates Councillor Jim Grant, Rodbourne Cheney Councillor. 01793 485159, grant4gt@btinternet.com Swindon Borough Council have proposed transferring on a lease arrangement Swindon’s country parks, including Lydiard Park and Coate Water, to a not-for-profit or private company. The Council wish to do this in order to reduce its annual subsidy to the park, costing £450,000. The organisation who successfully wins the lease will manage these country parks during the term of the lease. Adverts have already been placed in trade journals and newspapers to invite organisations to submit proposals for Lydiard House and Park. The Cabinet Member for Lydiard Park has said the transfer of Lydiard Park and House to a private company will likely lead to the introduction of car parking charges and the Cabinet Member hasn’t ruled out some parts of Lydiard Park being inaccessible for residents in the future under this new lease arrangement. Lydiard House and Park has recently been listed as an Asset of Community Value and any proposals arising from the adverts placed will be brought before ward councillors and park users in the coming months. Any proposals for Swindon’s other country parks will follow a decision being taken on Lydiard Park. Councillor Nadine Watts – Old Town & East Wichel. nadine.watts@live.co.uk - 07595 071381

Councillor Nadine Watts – Old Town & East Wichel – nadine.watts@live.co.uk - 07595 071381 Programme of works to improve approximately 90 traffic signs in the Old Town area is due to take place between Monday 23 November and Friday 11 December. People in Swindon are being urged to look after their health and take the necessary precautions as temperatures drop. The flu vaccine is one of the most effective ways to reduce harm from flu. Fitting draught proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors helps efficiency. If you’re struggling to pay the heating bill you may be eligible for a Warm Home Discount.

Corn Exchange - progress is being made with legal agreements. Hopefully it will be signed by end of the year. Town Gardens footbridge - Now out for tender. Mp Update

Robert Buckland Update A December Christmas message from Robert: What a year it has been! It seems like only yesterday I was visiting thousands of fellow residents and campaigning hard to be re-elected as South Swindon’s MP. For me, it was a continuation of the work I did and continue to do out and about in our local community, meeting fellow residents at their front doors or in one of my regular surgeries. As this year comes to a close and the festivities draw ever closer, let us all spare a thought for those who are ill or alone, and remember those who are not so fortunate to be surrounded by their loved ones. A simple act like a phone call or a visit can make all the difference. Recent thoughts have been trained on the devastating attacks in Paris, and it’s appalling events like this that remind us of the sheer bravery of our Armed Forces and Security Services who work so hard to keep us safe. This Christmas, let us pay tribute to our brave men and women who will continue to help protect our rights and freedoms that we hold dear as a country. As always, please don’t hesitate to get in touch if I can help you by addressing a local or national issue that you may have. However you choose to celebrate, I wish you and all your family and friends a very joyful and peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year. If you have any local or national issues to raise, or would like information about my upcoming advice surgeries, then please get in touch with me using the following contact information:

Scob Update

Swindon College Old Boys’ New match day partner. “It’s a local company, but is steeped in history in Swindon - that’s a big evolution for SCOB,” explained Astley. One of Swindon’s oldest family run businesses, Hillier Funeral Service has been unveiled as Swindon College Old Boys’ new match day partner. The old town-based company, which specialises as an independent funeral directors, will be the club’s principle match day sponsor for the next two seasons. The agreement, announced in October, will see two of the town’s oldest brands join forces, with the Hillier logo emblazoned on the club’s match balls used at all club events. However these aren’t just any balls – they are the same balls that were used by the various national teams throughout the Rugby World Cup 2015, the Gilbert Match XV.

Rebecca Hillier who works alongside her father Mark Hillier was the orchestrator of the deal, which is the first of its kind for both parties. SCOB RFC chairman Darren Astley was delighted to have secured such a significant backer to sit alongside this seasons other new sponsors including Pebley Beach and Smiles Dental.

“The very ethos of Hillier Funeral Service, wanting to offer the very best services, but on an individual level, is what we do on a weekly basis in training. The players, coaches and everyone put all their effort into looking to become the best team – something that stands out in Swindon area and, more importantly, the local community.”

“It’s not a sponsorship in a normal sense. We don’t want to just shout our name, we want to give the boys something meaningful that will enhance their performance and that’s exactly what we are doing with the balls; we’re giving the players of SCOB the best balls possible to use when they are on the pitch.” “It’s not just for commercial gain at all - we’ve done it because we want to support something locally. We’ve tried various things in Swindon and they don’t always come off.”

Rebecca, who is married to SCOB RFC winger Matthew Finnegan was flying high when announcing the deal. <lineout picture>

“Darren Astley and the current SCOB committee, armed with their infectious enthusiasm and tactical skill, are transforming the club.”

“Matt and I have been involved with rugby as supporters at both a local and national level, and over the last couple of years we’ve come to love SCOB RFC.”

“It has been a joy and inspiration to witness SCOB RFC’s rapid regeneration and see the club’s ambitious expansion plans first-hand.”

“That relationship has evolved and I think the two organisations both share a culture of high performance and pursuit of excellence.”

“We are backing a team that shares Hillier’s belief in where it can go and have fighting spirit in abundance.” Photography by Jade Williams.

The BIG Green Home Show - Review We all want to create better, greener and generally more efficient & sustainable homes, but knowing where to start and how to make informed decisions on your eco project can often be a puzzle.

In October the team from the National Self Build & Renovation Centre (NSBRC) held their annual ‘BIG Green Home Show’. The Show is the UK’s biggest event for anyone wishing to make their home more eco-friendly. We checked in with the NSBRC team to hear how it went and we’re pleased to find out it was a great success. Almost 2,000 people visited for a weekend of free advice, expert talks and live demonstrations as well as interactive tours of the life sized houses and exhibits featured within the Centre. Managing Director Harvey Fremlin said “It’s clear to us that the appetite for building homes in an environmentally friendly way is very high and we really enjoyed seeing so many people from Swindon and the surrounding area visiting us to learn how they can reduce their energy bills and create more comfortable and affordable homes”.

PAGE 26

Piers Taylor from the BBC’s ‘The House that £100k built’ was a welcome addition to Saturdays programme and proved very popular with visitors – with standing room only for his well crafted talk on intelligent design ideas. Piers also participated in the ‘Battle of the Building Systems’ discussion which was excellently chaired by Mike Hardwick, NSBRC Course presenter. For the first time the show featured recorded ‘Question Time’ debates in conjunction with Swindon 105.5 which proved particularly successful as it allowed visitors to have their own views and questions discussed.

NSBRC Feature

The show offered over 60 talks & presentations on the very latest technologies and products available. Renowned for the quality of its expert presentations and a relaxed, open approach, the NSBRC is open 6 days a week and offers free guidance and advice to anyone building a new, or improving an existing, house. Harvey explains; “We welcome visitors from all over the UK, but we’re always particularly pleased to see people from the Swindon area as this fantastic and unique resource is right on our doorsteps. Through the advice and educational courses and events we run we can save people hundreds, and sometimes thousands of pounds, from the running cost of a home”.

Advice for small businesses

Should I set up a pension through my Company (owned with my wife)? Or pay it from my own income?

Firstly, you should consult a Financial Advisor to set up a pension scheme. If the Company pays for the contributions, you’ll both share the tax relief. If you make the contributions from your own income after taxes, you will receive all the tax relief. If one of you is a Higher Rate Tax payer (taxable income over £42,385), then you should try to make sure that the tax relief goes to the higher earner. However, from April 2016, the new dividend tax will make company pension contributions much more advantageous than personal pension payments paid from dividends.
