The golden age of exploration is, and will forever be, now. While much of the world has been seen, charted, mapped and trodden, the chance to explore it will always exist. When we get past the idea that somehow we need to be ‘first,’ our world can be as new as we like it to be! For Joey Schusler, Jessa Goebel and Pat Goodman, exploration is the name of the game, whether it’s unlocking Mongolia’s hidden gems by bike (see page 28) or seeking first ascents in the Vampire Spires (see page 14). While humans have inhabited these areas for millennia, through the lens of bikepacking and climbing, these lands become a new frontier with endless possibilities.
This summer, we’d like to challenge you to explore. Set a goal. Go after something new and you’ll likely discover a little more about your friends or your own personal limits. After all, these are the very things that brought us to the outdoors to begin with. They’re what make life less ordinary, more fun and the world worth exploring. HAVE AN AMAZING SUMMER.

THE POWER OF PERSISTANCE
T
HE MOST REWARDING SUCCESSES are often built on the bones of failures. They can also be the most addictive ones, requiring a persistence bordering on obsession.
Such is the case with Pat Goodman’s love affair with Canada’s remote Vampire Peaks. The Vamps are tucked away in the Northwest Territories’ Nahanni National Park, guarded by notoriously bad weather, heavy logistics, a climbing season about as long as your index finger and mosquitoes of similar size. But that’s exactly what keeps Goodman coming back.
“I'm a big fan of solitude. In the Vamps, there's no hype, no circus of other climbers racing to the base. The climbing is great, but it's the area that draws me back.” In 2014, Jessa Goebel came to the Vamps for the first time with Goodman, then on his eighth visit. Eighteen days and a lot of bad weather later, they’d add a few more bones to the pile, failing on a new line on a peak called Moraine Hill.
So with unfinished business, they both returned in 2015 to finish their previous attempt on Moraine Hill, and try a new route on a complex granite massif called the Sundial, where Goodman had established “The Phreenix” V+ 5.11, in 2012. Despite more notoriously poor weather and light snow clinging to anything that wasn’t vertical, their persistence paid off. They settled the score with Moraine Hill, establishing “Fighting Till Dawn” V, 5.11R and “Ramshackle Affair” IV, 5.11+ (A.0) on the Sundial. For Goodman, such success is the perfect example of the need to be tolerant of failure, while realizing that it doesn’t have be the final word; to redefining success as simply trying – whatever the outcome.

A downhill MTB racer turned filmmaker and insatiable explorer, Joey’s been doing just that for the last three years. “The Mongolia trip was a big one for me,” says Schusler. “We planned to be out for 11 days, fully selfsupported, and we decided to incorporate a new element — packrafting. We had a rugged trekking route to ride bikes on, and semi-mellow glacial rivers to float down. It was the perfect combination for what we wanted to accomplish.”
