A conversation with the Head of College

This week has been a challenging one for many families in our community as they deal with the impact of flooding. While the journey to and from school was delayed for many students on Monday and Tuesday, a number of families and communities have been more than inconvenienced, they have lost houses, precious possessions, livestock and crops.

Both school campuses have thankfully been relatively unaffected by the deluge, with the exception of a few Junior School fields being out of action, the equestrian arena fence and surface being washed away and a few minor leaks. My thanks go to staff who stayed back with students on Monday afternoon and who were driving buses late in the evening to ensure students arrived home safe and sound, albeit five hours later than normal.

The work of the College’s Property Team, led by Mr Jeff Reeks, has been put to the test over recent weeks and months with gas supply interruptions and an extraordinary amount of rain prior to the flooding. Through it all, the Property Team have remained optimistic, calm and focused on doing their best to ensure the highest possible level of continuity for students. Standing alongside the Property Team are a committed Administrative Team and Catering Team who do not hesitate to roll up their sleeves and assist in any way they can when the need arises. I am so appreciative of their can-do attitude.

From the Chaplain

O’Lord, save us

Given the week we have endured together, I thought I’d share the opening words of Psalm 69

Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck.

2 I sink in the miry depths, where there is no foothold.

I have come into the deep waters; the floods engulf me.

3 I am worn out calling for help; my throat is parched. My eyes fail, looking for my God.

There are two things I’d like to draw your attention to: Firstly, King David (1000 – 962BC) doesn’t write, ‘Lord thank you for saving me from a potential flood’. No, rather he complains about being so ‘worn out’ from praying. In our modern culture, we have a tendency to think that God should ‘snap to attention’ when we

call on him – as if he is meant to serve our every wish. David has much to teach us. Here, he realises that he serves God, and God does not serve him. The second point to draw your attention to is that God did save him. His prayers were answered, not according to David’s timing but God’s. You can read about the rest of David’s life in the book of 2 Samuel. Why have we been hit so hard as a community with drought, floods, a gas outage and COVID in recent years? David gives us a clue at the back end of his Psalm.

I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.

31 This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves.

32 The poor will see and be glad— you who seek God, may your hearts live!

33 The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people. Why? So that we are prompted to turn back to God and depend on him. As our Heavenly Father, God yearns for a relationship with us. King David starts with ‘where are you’ … and he finishes with ‘I praise you’. This was the prayer of King David in the middle of the flood. He knew God’s great love for him, may you know God’s love for you. Amen

Guests need to arrive at 6:15 pm for a 6:30 pm start. The students are looking forward to an entertaining evening where we can acknowledge their achievements and this significant step in their schooling journey.

This week we have been busy in the Prep School welcoming all of our new students for 2023. It was wonderful to see all of the little smiling faces enjoying

Goal setting

Junior School

The latter part of our whole school well-being program, Bounce Back, is based on goal-setting. The students are being encouraged to identify a goal they would like to achieve and work towards it. We are helping the students understand these key ideas:

• Persist – don’t give up when things get tough

• Hard work and effort will help you achieve your goal

• Know your strengths and use them to help you achieve your goal

• Be honest and ethical when you pursue your goals

Goal setting is really important in giving students purpose for what they are doing and a measure of achievement. Smaller realistic goals are effective for younger students, so they can feel the success of their accomplishments and keep focused.

While some students have experience in goal-setting,

the company of their new classmates and teachers. Next year we will have four Prep classes and welcome Mrs Eva Vincze as a new Prep teacher and Ms Kate Hurst as a new Prep Teacher’s Aide.

Preparatory School Farewell Assembly

At 9:30 am on Thursday, 24 November our Prep students will be participating in a special assembly to celebrate their graduating from the Prep School. Parents are most welcome to attend. Weather permitting, the assembly will be on the Chapel Lawn.

Junior School Triathlon

The term is quickly coming to a close, and we have one more major sporting event before the end. On Tuesday, 29 November all students in Years 3 to 6 are invited to participate in the Junior School Triathlon, which involves a swim, bike ride and a run. All students are encouraged to enter either the individual event or the team event, where they only have to do one leg of the triathlon.

many do not. We use the SMART model of goal setting, so they have a framework to build on.

Year 6 Graduation Dinner

This Friday night will be the Year 6 Graduation Dinner on the Junior School Campus. There is much excitement among the students as they prepare for the milestone in their education journey, and we are looking forward to celebrating their achievements with family and friends.

Year 6 Farewell Chapel

As our Year 6 2022 complete their final weeks of school on the Junior School Campus, we are inviting our community to pray with them and for them in our final Chapel service for 2022. It will be held on Monday, 5 December on the lawn near the Chapel, at 10:20 am, all welcome.

Introducing the White Rock Rocket

Since the start of the 22/23 Bathurst Athletics season in October, Emily Bennett has become the owner of the 400 metres, 800m and 1500m Under 17 Girls records.

Molly receives 2BS Junior

Sports Award

Congratulations to Molly Corbett, Year 11, who received the 2BS Junior sports awards last week.

The award, which is sponsored by Reliance Bank and Bathurst RSL, is worth $500.

It is offered to junior athletes who have represented in their sport at NSW or International level.

Speaking to local media outlets, the 15-year-old was pleasantly surprised by her jaw-droppingly low times, "I was pretty surprised to have broken the records, I have done a lot of training, so I guess I have been working to get those records, but to get them is pretty cool."

Emily’s most impressive achievement came in the 1500m, shattering the old mark of 6:15.30 (set way back in 2010) with a time of 5:36.51.

Keep up the awesome work, Em!

Staff Reader Profiles A French speaker with a fascinating occupation

What is your favourite novel - fiction?

I enjoy crime fiction books. Agatha Christie novels. So many tropes in modern detective fiction originated with her.

What is your favourite nonfiction text?

History books are by far the greater proportion of my non-fiction reading. I have been busy lately catching up on some of the Bathurst region local history books that have appeared lately.

Favourite book as a school child

Thomas the Tank Engine. When I go down to the Bathurst Railway Station to transport the boarders, I also soak up a bit of atmosphere with trucks and carriages and diesels.

Value of reading extensively whilst at school

A person’s ability to understand what is happening in the world is much greater if they have read as much as they can as early as they can. Reading is a fantastic way of discovering the experiences of other people. Looking at other peoples’ writing styles is also valuable. The historian A. J. P. Taylor was a great exponent of making writing easy to understand, and I have tried to model my own writing on that.

What are you reading now?

Tree surgeon and past Scots School student, Bruce Smith, has had some interesting jobs but nothing like what he did for many years in the Loire Valley and adjoining areas of France.

Since returning to Australia, he has been working as an arborist in Orange and the surrounding districts. As an arborist in France, he had a number of opportunities to work in gardens and chateaus that are world-renowned. In our interview a few days ago, we asked him about the importance of knowing a second language in which he said that no matter what career you have chosen, it is always useful to have a second language. It opens doors to other worlds. His favourite subjects at school were History, English and French and his favourite food is pain du chocolate. We took away from this encounter that if you have a second language, the possibilities are endless. We also discovered that if you do not pre-check audio on your camera technical glitches can occur. Unfortunately, there is no audio for this week’s interview, only a few photos – a lesson learnt!

classroom to do this! Some students also worked in other areas of the town, helping to fill sandbags to protect the houses in the lower end of town as those houses were at risk of being flooded. On this page are some pictures of the floods where the Stiles Oval became a lake in 1986.

There has been a long history of floods in Bathurst, and its surrounds and the Macquarie River once again flowed over its banks after the huge storms in the last few weeks of Spring rain.

Stiles Oval on the All Saints’ Campus once again got its feet very wet, but thankfully, the road from Eglinton did not close this time, and the School Chapel was not at risk of having the water lapping at its walls. In 1986, before the road from Eglinton was moved to the other side of the old tennis courts and was outside the school boundary, the Macquarie floods came very close to reaching the Chapel. (The tennis courts are now in car park 2, and the Agriculture Shed in the same area, is now at the back of the school). As the river rose rapidly, the senior students had the task of filling sandbags and placing them around the Chapel and the Headmaster’s house - not that they minded a day out of the

Other floods have occurred since then, in 1990, 1998 when All Saints’ students were called upon to help by filling sand bags and assisting homeowners in the cleanup. The building of the levee banks in the 1990’s and 2000’s has taken some of the fear of floods away from many homeowners near the Macquarie but Stiles Oval and the ‘Edgell’ paddocks can still go under after heavy rains as seen two days ago. The Macquarie River will always be a powerful but essential part of our landscape and we should respect it, even when it tests us when it floods and we are stuck in traffic through road closures!

Remember - do not drive through floodwaters!
