A conversation with the Head of College

Since our first boarders arrived on Sunday afternoon, students have been streaming back onto campus. On whichever day your child arrived, a combination of flooding and the races meant it was not an easy journey for some. Snorkels on 4WDs were put to good use, and our patience with traffic around Bathurst was put to the test.

For one of our families out near Bourke, the journey involved bundling their school gear into waterproof bags, jet skiing down the creek, an SES boat ride along the Darling River and finally, a seven-hour drive back to the College. However your child managed to get back to school this week, it has been terrific to see them engaged again with peers, teachers and involved in a multitude of learning experiences.

For a number of Year 11 students, the learning did not stop over the holidays. Claudia Pring undertook her Gold Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) adventurous journey with a challenging ride by horse from Sunny Corner and finished in Sofala. A distance of approximately 130 km and involving a crossing of the Turon River in flood was completed with all safety measures in place. For Claudia, this was a major part of her Duke of Edinburgh journey, which

she started when she was 14 years of age and is very close to completion at 17 years.

Year 11 students also undertook their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh expedition in the holidays, and I am most grateful to Mr Adams, Mr Stocks and Ms L’Estrange for accompanying the students.

On Wednesday, Year 12 commenced their HSC Examinations, and we will be thinking of and praying for each of them over the coming weeks. Year 12, along with a crowd of nearly five hundred family and friends, enjoyed a stunning Valedictory Dinner at the end of last term where we honoured their individual and collective achievements. The dinner, which included exceptional music performances, will live on in the memories of Year 12 and their families for years to come.

Another memorable evening awaits us in Week 3 of this term as the whole Junior Campus take to the stage in Disney’s The Lion King Jnr. Tickets are available online, click here for details, and I hope you will be able to get along and support the outstanding efforts and talent of Junior Campus students and staff.

From the Chaplain

Are you Ghosted up!

In the holidays, I listened to a selection of African American preachers to get a different cultural view of how they present the Gospel.

There is something very special about the African American preacher – many of you would be familiar with the iconic Martin Luther King's impassioned speeches, and his style is reflective of most of his contemporaries. Generally, they have a powerful voice and speak with a poetic rhythm. They also take the listener on a journey through the Bible, mentioning or reflecting on stories or even scriptural phrases that serve their greater theme.

As I listened to one such speaker, Dr Jerimiah Wright, he told several humourous personal stories, but one of the best ones that I have been reflecting upon is this one. He said his Daddy, who was also a preacher, would ring him every Saturday night before he was to deliver Sunday's sermon and ask: “Are you Ghosted up?”. This strange phrase was talking about the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit. Dr Wright explained that for the preacher if the Holy Spirit/Ghost does not meet you in your study, you should not expect him to be with you in the pulpit.

His point was that the Holy Spirit works within our lives, shaping us, changing us, preparing us for the future, and, yes, guiding the preacher's thoughts for Sunday’s sermon.

As I reflected upon my own Christian life, I realised I do many things on my own strength. I haven’t been calling upon the strength of God (the Holy Spirit) to help and support me in all

areas of my life – I wasn’t 'Ghosted up'! The third member of the Holy Trinity is often forgotten, and yet He is given to us to help us shape our lives, draw us closer to God, and be a blessing to others.

I will pray this week for all who read this – whether you are looking into faith or already following the Lord's guidance – that you will 'Ghost up', and invite the Holy Spirit to convict you and lead you in your daily lives.

Amen

Head of Junior School

Welcome to Term 4

It was wonderful to see all of the students back at school this week to begin a new term. We have some exciting things planned with The Lion King Jnr and Orientations Days just around the corner. I encourage all of our students to make the most of their learning opportunities and always strive to reach their potential in everything they do.

New Students

A special welcome to Hamish Jones (Year 3) and Archie Jones (Year 5) who started at the College this week.

New staff for 2023

As we continue to grow and expand there will always be a need to welcome new staff. Recently I have appointed Mrs Kathryn Gavey (Kindergarten), Mrs Anneke Baker (Year 3), Mrs Eva Vincze (Prep Teacher) and Ms Kate Robinson (Prep Aide) to the Junior School staff for 2023. All of these new staff members are excited about starting at Scots All Saints College in the new year and will bring with them a wealth of experience and enthusiasm.

Summer Uniform

Students are required to wear our formal summer school uniform in Terms 4 and 1. It is important that they have their school hat with them each day as they are required to wear this when on the playground.

The Lion King

Please put our Junior School Musical “The Lion King Jnr” in your calendars for 27 and 28 October. It will be performed in the Bickerdike Centre. The students and staff have already done a great deal of

preparation and, from what I have witnessed so far, it is shaping up to be a fantastic evening of entertainment.

Code Camp

Our first-ever Code Camp was a great success during the school holidays, with 25 students booking their spots early enough to join the experience. Students enjoyed the opportunity to design, code, create and have fun with friends at Code Camp. Lots of students have commented on how much they enjoyed the experience, and we hope we can host again in the not-too-distant future.

Innovation Week

Our first-ever Innovation Week, held at the end of last term, with our Year 3-6 classes enjoying a day to focus on their own area of interest. Students were very engaged throughout the process and enjoyed the opportunity to showcase their learning to their peers. Some classes even enjoyed sharing their learning with a special visit from Mr Ford.

Re-Connect Bathurst- Intergenerational Pen Pals

Some of our Year 3 students recently took part in this initiative which saw our students connect with the elderly from St Catherine’s Aged Care. Students developed connections through the sharing of stories. During the initiative, students wrote a letter and drew a self-portrait to share with a resident. Their elderly pen-pal friend then reciprocated the process and shared a letter in return. Year 3 were very excited to open their letters earlier this week! The letters and images used will form part of an outdoor community art activation during Social Inclusion Week from 19 November.

Home Readers (K-2)

Just a friendly reminder that students who take a levelled reader home for home reading should only read the level allocated by the teacher. Further reading is always encouraged in addition to the levelled reader. We encourage all students to take responsibility for changing their readers when required.

Kreative Koalas

I’d like to congratulate all members of our Kreative Koalas group who did an amazing job raising awareness of the local extinction of the platypus in Winburndale Rivulet. Here’s a little photo of the final piece of work we submitted. Our team named our koala, Biladurang or Bill for short.

Hats and Summer Uniforms

With the start of Term 4, we remind students and parents that we are now in the Summer School Uniform. The expectation and requirement are that students need to have a hat on during recess and lunch. The school bucket hat is possibly the best option for those wanting to be physically active, the formal hat is required for those being less active. Students who do not have a hat will be moved to a shaded area. For Active Afternoon’s, students are required to wear their white polo. House polos are okay for PDHPE/PASS lessons. We thank parents for their support with sending their children off to school each day dressed and prepared appropriately. To the right is the uniform as per the student handbook and the link to the Noone online shop.

Phones

Another reminder is given to students and parents that the unauthorised use of mobile phones is not permitted. Students using them without permission will be asked to hand them into the teacher, and they will be secured in the Deputy’s Office to be collected at the end of the day. Repeated offences will result in the phone being handed in each day for a week.

Duke of Ed Camp

In the second week of the recent school break, 14 Year 11 students attended a Duke of Edinburgh/Leadership camp. The students were an amazing group to take away. They were challenged on many levels with problem-solving, team building and leadership challenges, as well as with an overnight hike. Their map reading and navigation skills were tested, and they all passed with flying colours, getting us to and from our destination safely. We look forward to a more comprehensive report from the students. Thank you to Mr Stocks and Georgia for supporting the students on the camp. We will be encouraging students in younger

years to pursue their Duke of Edinburgh in the coming years.

Café Vouchers Week 10, Term 3

At the end of the term, we presented the Stage 4 student below with a Café voucher. We congratulate the students on their brilliant work, outstanding contributions or excellent citizenship that they have been recognised for.

Molly represents NSW at National Interschool Championships

Molly Corbett, Year 11, competed in the Marcus Oldham National Interschool Championships as a part of team NSW in the school holidays.

Molly was honoured to be selected as a part of the NSW team and was very proud to represent both her state and the College. Molly said it was a privilege just to be a part of this competition, with teams competing from every state.

Molly and her horse Ollie competed in the 95 cm one-day event. Competitors were required to perform in three sections; dressage, show jumping and a cross country phase with cumulative scores.

At the end of the competition, Molly placed fifth in her event. This was an incredible achievement against Australia’s best juniors.

From the Scots School archives THE FIRST GIRLS

Earlier in the year, we marked the 25th anniversary of the re-opening of The Scots School Prep School. On 14 October, an even more momentous event occurred: the first girls enrolled at Scots began lessons in Mr Maher’s Year 10 English class, and in the Prep School. Eliza Edkins, taught in the Prep Shool by Mrs Byrom and Mr Donald, has the distinction of being the first girl to be enrolled.

The history of girls on the Scots campus goes back a bit further than 1997. Tim Hector recalls that the daughter of a member of staff in 1942 attended classes at The Scots College Branch School. The Old Boys who attended a late 1965-1970 joint reunion a few years ago remember that girls from The Marsden School used to travel across to Scots for Science lessons. For many years, science was not considered to be a suitable career for a woman, and some girls schools did not offer science courses or have the facilities to teach them. In the 1980s, a few girls appeared when Scots hosted some special English courses, but it was really only the 1997 girls who could be considered as the first belonging to Scots. The Presbyterian Church made the decision for the school to become co-educational based on a study of the demographics of the area from which Scots drew its students and decided that there were not enough numbers to sustain a single sex boys school. Along with the reopening of the Prep School, the decision to become co-educational was made on the recommendation of Mr Graeme Renney, who was the Headmaster of The Scots School 1996-7 and took over at a time of severe financial difficulty for Scots.

There were some challenges. Single-sex schools are noted for not having much in the way of facilities for people of the opposite gender, and it was necessary to provide things like toilets and change rooms. A member of staff, Mrs Linda Cormack, was given the task of being the girls

Photo of the first Scots girls on 14th October 1997. (Back row- left to right) Tammie Gunness, Cherie Brown, Kanada Warden. (Front row- left to right) Sally Richards, Eliza Edkins, Lyndal Tuckey.

mistress to look after their interests. Some parents were not happy with the change, and some boys were withdrawn, although this did coincide with a program of free boarding scholarships being offered by another Scots institution. A few Old Boys felt that the school’s tradition and atmosphere had been lost, but quite a number asked why the school had not been co-educational when they attended it. The move was understandably not well-received at All Saints College, which had been co-educational since 1976. The Betty Ives Archives Centre has an interview from radio 2BS where All Saints Headmaster Dr Tim Wright expressed his views. Initially, the plan for the change was that it would happen in the senior years first, then filter down to lower years as time passed. However, the transition worked so well, and demand for places was so high that the changeover was accelerated, and within a very short time, forty percent of the enrolment were girls. It was only a few years before girls were in leadership positions such as C.U.O. of the cadet unit and Drum Major of the Pipes and Drums, as well as positions like Prefect and Captains. The first girl CUO of the Cadet Unit was Elizabeth Robertson in 2003, and Emily Burton served as Drum Major from 20052007.

Emily Burton leads the Pipes and Drums. The sash she was wearing dates back to the 1950s when The Scots School was not TSS but Scots School Bathurst.
