FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear FASNY Community,

For the first time in three years, I think we can confidently say that we were back to a “normal” school year, allowing us the opportunity to focus on the learning, growth, success, and joy of our students, faculty & staff, and the entire FASNY community.

In the present, our students shone once again across all divisions, learning new skills, acquiring new knowledge, completing exciting projects, and of course, representing FASNY at the highest level in the many competitions they entered, in the Brevet, Bac Français, Bac Français International, and International Baccalaureate exams. Stars were born in the arts with exciting live performances and inspiring art shows. Across multiple curriculums and subjects, our students excelled in competitions and made global names for themselves and for FASNY. We traveled the country and the region to learn and bond once again outside of the classroom and in the places we learn about in history books. Our FASNY Sharks showed the competition what we are made of with great wins, undefeated records, and many new trophies and medals to call ours. And of course, our community continued to grow, with new members and old, joining together

for our favorite traditions like International Night, the Gala, Homecoming and the Fun Run, the Holiday & Book Fairs, coffee mornings, and many more.

With one eye on the now, we also had the opportunity to look toward the future. With the leadership of the Board of Trustees, we embarked on an updated Strategic Plan for the development and success of FASNY over the next 5 years. We also added more programs and tools to equip our students with the confidence and skills to become impactful global citizens. And we said goodbye to 64 exceptional seniors who are starting their futures now at some of the finest universities and colleges across the world. One thing is certain, the future looks bright for FASNY both here on campus and out in the great world.

It was a busy year and when I look back on it I am amazed at all that we accomplished. I am so proud of our students, faculty & staff, parents, alumni, and friends for all of the time, effort, and enthusiasm put in to make FASNY the unique and wonderful place that it is. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be part of it all and for your constant support and trust, it brings me a great source of motivation each day.

Warmest, Francis Gianni

Bien cordialement, Francis Gianni

A STRONG & STRATEGIC FUTURE

During the 2022-2023 school year, the Board of Trustees and School Leadership undertook the important work of updating FASNY’s Strategic Plan. The purpose of developing such a strategic plan is to create a road map for FASNY’s next five to seven years that will include all the major aspects of the School: curriculum, mission, finance - including tuition, salaries, financial aid - facilities, and enrollment. The shared goal between the Board and Leadership is to ensure that FASNY is continuing to provide the best in bilingual and international education, as well as adapt to the ever-changing landscape of the world.

The first step in the process relied on FASNY’s various constituencies; parents, faculty & staff, students in grades 5-12, and Board members, to complete a comprehensive set of confidential and anonymous

surveys. This first step was crucial as it allowed the strategic plan committee to hear from all members of the FASNY community, in order to continue building a school that meets our constituents’ expectations.

In order to assist FASNY in this work, the school contracted Independent School Management (ISM), the largest independent school consulting firm in North America, to develop, administer, and report the findings of each survey. Once the surveys were complete, ISM provided the team with a summary of data, benchmarked against other similar independent schools, and was used by the Board and the administration as one of several elements to assess FASNY’s current situation and aid in the process of developing an updated strategic plan. With this new knowledge directly from FASNY’s own

community in hand, over thirty members of FASNY’s various constituencies workshopped together with ISM for several days, and on their own, to form and finalize an updated strategic plan and the goals for the the near future.

With the discovery and formulation processes behind them, the Board and School Leadership have moved onto phase two, putting the operational action plans in place to achieve the strategic goals over the next five to seven years. The outcomes of this crucial work will be presented to the FASNY community throughout the next school year, with the strategic plan, and the subsequent action plans to be assessed, reviewed, and modified accordingly over the next several years in order to ensure FASNY’s success and growth.

SET UP FOR SUCCESS

As a leader in Bilingual & International Education FASNY not only aims to provide students with the best in academics but strives to help them become empowered individuals with leadership and entrepreneurial skills that will allow them to succeed in the ever-evolving world. Within both the academic framework in class, as well as extracurricular offerings, FASNY is able to provide students of all ages important and dynamic opportunities that will help to shape their futures.

Students are encouraged to be active participants in their own education from the earliest years, with teaching and learning methods based on a mutual respect and set of values for both students and teachers. Personal autonomy begins in the Lower School with a focus on the organization of assignments, helping students develop their executive functioning skills, study habits, and time management.

With the foundation beginning at a young age, students at the Middle School hone their independence and are empowered to not only to excel in their academics but also have the opportunity to create and execute

extracurricular activities based on their personal interests. Complementing their demanding yet rich curriculum, grade 6-8 students in both programs participate in life and study skills classes focusing on time management, goal setting, conflict solution, positive thinking, and learning style awareness, allowing them to grow within their academics and their community engagement.

This empowerment continues at the High School where students truly have the ability to use their learned entrepreneurial spirit and skills to develop leadership skills that they can use in all aspects of life. Clubs like the Future Business Leaders of America, High School internship opportunities, partnerships with mentors to create a business plan through an entrepreneur project in grade 10, attendance at national and global conferences, the CAS project for IB students, and even additional student-led clubs, enable students to have ownership of not only their interests but to learn how to lead both while at FASNY and after they graduate.

In addition to autonomy and ownership of their education, FASNY

focuses on teaching students to be effective communicators, setting them up for success in their personal, academic, and professional lives. Across all divisions, traditional communication skills like reading, writing, and language lay an important foundation, while presentations, public speaking, debate opportunities, partnerships with other AEFE schools throughout North America and abroad, and studying the evolving digital communication platforms offered in today’s society, allows students of all ages the ability to adapt and learn the latest in the landscape of communication.

Whether it is through a second grade oral presentation, middle school group study sessions, interning for an international company, starting a new club, or recording a monthly podcast in the Innovation Lab, FASNY nurtures students to become lifelong learners, respectful communicators and digital citizens, and owners of their own academic and professional journeys in order to go out and become global leaders wherever their paths take them.

WATCH OUT WORLD, HERE COMES FASNY!

This June, 64 seniors at the French American School of New York said goodbye to their beloved campus in Mamaroneck and hello to the great big world. Including, fourteen “lifers” who joined the FASNY community beginning in preschool. Luckily, whether IB students completing their International Baccalaureate or French-American students accepting the French Baccalaureate, their time at FASNY has prepared them to take on whatever comes next on their academic journeys.

The Class of 2023 is rich in diverse interests and strengths, with star athletes, National Merit Scholars, thriving artists, passionate writers, and STEM aficionados, and one look at the @fasnyseniors2023 Instagram page you’ll see their college acceptances and decisions for the next phase of their academic careers are proof of their incredible talents. Students will also head internationally to top schools in the UK, Spain, Canada, and France like the University of St. Andrews, Kings College London, the University of Edinburgh, IE University, ESSEC, and McGill University, and more.

Regardless of choice, the college application process is strenuous and FASNY’s College Counseling team Hillary Fernandes, Monica Ibrahim, and Ollivier Cicero provide the students with information and support throughout the entire journey. Seeing their hard work lead to success is something the team is very proud of, as Hillary says, “FASNY

is tremendously proud of the incredible accomplishments of our senior class. From studying literature and international relations in the UK, Engineering, Physics, and Chemistry in Canada, and acting, marketing, international politics, and aeronautics in the United States, the varied interests and talents of our students have led them to campuses that will advance their education and character over the next three or four years. We know they are ready for this next phase, and applaud the dedication and commitment they have displayed in finding the home for their next chapter.”

FASNY’s Mission strives to nurture creative, open-minded, critical thinkers to become lifelong learners motivated to lead, contribute and thrive in an ever-changing world and it certainly looks like the newest alumni are ready to do just that.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS

After a few years of learning solely within the walls of FASNY, the 2022-2023 school year opened up the outside world to students once again, learning from experience and expertise - a crucial piece of a FASNY education.

Field trips were back and better than ever as students in all divisions left the classroom and stepped foot in the places and spaces that they read about in their books. Students in 5th through 12th grade learned, experienced, and bonded with overnight trips to Williamsburg, VA, Washington, DC, Camp Mason, Nature’s Classroom, Lowell, MA, and even the beloved ski trip to Jiminy Peak.

Day trips to local art galleries, the Rye Nature Center, the Regeneron DNA Learning Center at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and even FASNY’s friends at the Village of Larchmont Fire Department brought learning to life in hands-on, exciting

opportunities from Nursery through High School.

FASNY students even went global with grade 10 students participating in exchange programs in Alicante, Spain. Yara Rizk and Josephine Bégoc spent a month at the Colegio San Alberto Magno, as part of a new exchange program offered this year. Pauline Prunier also spent a trimester in Alicante at the Lycée Français of Alicante. FASNY welcomed Iago, Judith, and Adélaïde to New York as part of the program as well.

Learning continued outside of the classroom as students and faculty & staff members attended informative and important workshops such as the annual Middle School Social Justice Summit (MOSAIC), the Young Men of Color Symposium, and the NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference and People of Color Conference in San Antonio, TX, and more. All of these conferences enable

FASNY students to learn, share, and reflect on challenges and experiences of identity, diversity, and culture. Wonderful lessons that were brought back to FASNY to share with other members of the student body.

While learning outside of the classroom is an incredible experience, sometimes you need to bring the outside, in. Throughout the school year classes from Lower to Middle to High School welcomed guest speakers in a variety of fields to share their expertise and experience with FASNY students. Special guests included French director Marie-Castille Mention-Scharr, famous French authors Marc Levy and Anne Berest, Economist Mr. Serge Stepanov, Director of the Archeologist Mission of the Island of Saï in Sudan and researcher for the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Vincent Francigny, Life Project 4 Youth Club’s Neeraj Kumar, LMC Media, and author and speaker Carlos Andrés Gómez.

FASNY ROBOTS BYTE

FASNY Robotics continues to shine, with two globally competitive teams at the Middle and High School level.

The High School team, the SharkBots had an impressive spring, starting with the NY Excelsior Regional Championship in Utica, NY in March. Despite some early adversity, the team fought back to a 4-1 win-loss record and placed 5th among the 28 top schools from around the state. While the robot performance, design, and coding process are crucial, all teams are also evaluated for their passion for sharing their knowledge with others in the community, a place where the SharkBots truly shine! This year, the team has engaged with daycare supervisors teaching them how to implement a simple robotics program in their facility which serves underprivileged children, they also worked with the Carver Center in Port Chester to rehabilitate their maker space by fixing their 3-D printers, non-functioning laptops, and will return to give classes to 68 children on coding, robotics, computer-aided design, and 3-D printing.

As an International School, the team also thought globally, working with FASNY parents and United Nations employees Liwa Fliss and Ben Ouedraogo to connect with teams in Tunisia and Burkina-Faso in order to share ideas and to spread STEM to underserved areas of their

respective countries.

Based on all of this work, the judges at the regional championships were impressed by every aspect of the SharkBots efforts and awarded them the highest honor given at the Championship: The Inspire Award. This achievement sent the SharkBots to Houston, TX in April for the FIRST World Robotics Championship, the “Olympics of robotics”. The event attracted 192 teams from around the world, and over 50,000 players, coaches, parents, and spectators from around the world.

After the 4 day competition, the SharkBots finished in 15th place — well within the top third of their division. More importantly, the team members were able to meet and learn from some of the other teams in attendance.

Sponsored and hosted by FASNY, the team is made up of FASNY students, Denis Boudaliez, Adrien Lesage, Raphael Bessin, Charlie Cooper, Inaara Tuan, Justin Gingrich, Rafael Leifert, Vincent Revise, Ben Street, Paolo Gayet, and also includes Chappaqua High School students Thomas Maslov and Ryan Treible, Hackley student Jack Ledoux, and Harrison High School student Maia Lopez.

Meanwhile, at the Middle School level, the Green Brick Road hit their

competition circuit hard! After placing first in the Chappaqua First Lego League qualifier, GBR headed into the Hudson Valley Regional Competition strong and confident and placed 2nd overall. The team also won the Robot Design Award for best explaining how they built and programmed their robot, and which strategy they used to fulfill their missions while competing.

With these impressive finishes under their belt, the young team headed to the Western Edge Open in California in May. They met with 74 other teams coming from all around the world, from Canada to China. GBR put up an exceptional performance next to global partners and contenders. Despite not winning a specific award, their efforts showcased technical skills, communication skills, and exemplary teamwork. The team also had the opportunity to face new challenges and work with other teams from around the world, including a team from Jordan and one from Arizona, invaluable experience.

The team is made up of FASNY 6-8 graders, Esteban Lemperiere, Daphne Panie, Louis Panie, Ahmed Fliss, Raphaël Davy, Benjamin Macri, Zelie Boudaliez, Max Medda, Tristan Closson, Lavinia Gayet.

The future certainly looks innovative and exciting for FASNY Robotics!

FASNY SPIRIT

Homecoming Weekend started off strong as all three campuses, students, faculty & staff from Nursery through Grade 12 donned their very best FASNY pride, on blue and white day! The spirit stayed high as after a three-year hiatus, the Middle & High School student bodies, the Student Government, excited faculty & staff members, a dancing Sharkey, and of course, some body paint, hyped up the soccer teams in our annual Pep Rally.

On Saturday, it was victory for the Sharks!!! The boys took home the win against CSSE in the 2nd Annual Emilio Alvarez Morera Memorial Game, while the girls beat EF Academy in their thrilling game.

The reunion continued as alumni and members of the faculty & staff joined together at Sedona Taphouse for an afternoon of conversation, catch-up, and FASNY memories.

The celebrations continued with our favorite Fall Sunday tradition, the FASNY Fun Run!

The Fun Run was originally created in 1987 and revived in 2015 for the 35th anniversary of the school. Alumni and current students, as well as parents, faculty and staff, showed off their speed and their spirit as they ran their hearts out. Even Sharkey got in on the fun!!

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Over the October Break, long-time teachers, David Ellinghaus and Mike Taylor headed to Europe where they had the opportunity to say hello to many familiar FASNY faces. Throughout their travels, they were able to reconnect with 57 FASNY alums, ranging from the class of 1998 all the way through the Class of 2022. The incredible FASNY network extends the entire globe, with so many connections remaining year over year no matter where our alumni end up. Here’s to many more visits at home and abroad!

ONE NIGHT, ONE FASNY

This year’s FASNY gala was an immense success. Held on Saturday, March 11 at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, the FASNY gala stands as the school’s premier fundraising event, showcasing the remarkable outcomes of our exceptional educational program.

The evening served as a testament to the remarkable achievements of our students, faculty, and alumni, and featured captivating entertainment, inspiring speeches by FASNY leadership and honorees, as well as an extensive live and silent auction.

Under the theme of “One Night, One FASNY,” this year’s gala underscored FASNY’s international focus, harnessing the power of diverse perspectives within our community and championing the inclusion of diverse voices in shaping our school culture. The event was skillfully co-chaired by devoted FASNY parents, Joumana Karnaby and Denise Santis, and proudly recognized three exceptional FASNY Alumnae: Gabrielle DiBuono ‘05, Ellie Foumbi ‘98, and Penda Sarr ‘13.

We are thrilled to share that over $813,000 was raised during the gala. These funds will be directed towards mission-driven innovations and projects aimed at enhancing the learning experience of FASNY students, fostering their growth, and propelling them towards success. Thank you to all who contributed to the resounding success of this event, whether through attendance, support, or generous donations. Your unwavering commitment to FASNY and our shared vision of educational excellence is truly commendable. Together, we continue to shape a brighter future for our students and our community.

Co-chairs, Denise Santis and Joumana Karnaby

The Fund for FASNY serves as our School’s annual fund, and active participation from the FASNY community is of utmost importance. While tuition covers a portion of the cost of educating a student, fundraising plays a crucial role in bridging that gap and enables FASNY to provide even more for its students.

Contributions to the Fund for FASNY have a profound impact, supporting a range of initiatives including the acquisition of new technology for our campuses, enhancements to the curriculum, professional development opportunities for our esteemed teachers, addressing unforeseen expenses, and providing financial aid to qualified students.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all those who have graciously supported the Fund for FASNY this year, as well as in the past. Your generosity and commitment make a significant difference in enriching the educational experience and opportunities we can offer to our students.

By coming together as a community, we can continue to foster an environment of excellence and provide our students and teachers with the tools and resources they need to thrive. We sincerely appreciate your ongoing support.

Thank you for your dedication to FASNY and for being an integral part of our mission.
