A NewYear A New Beginning We said goodbye to 2014 and we entered into 2015; we at MY Magazine would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year! I am extremely honored to be leading MY into this new year. Everyone pulls together to get us to press with a great attitude and even a greater sense of humor. Another big thank you to our advertisers, whose loyal support allows us to do what we do best, inform, endorse, entertain, and advocate for our community. Finally, a special thank you to Maria, my friend and mentor. Working side by side with this amazing woman has been life changing. She is smart, experienced, and takes everyone’s best interest to heart. I am very excited to be a part of a growing group of publishers through MY Publishing, who are opening local publications throughout the country. I’ve worked for many years in the health care industry as a nurse anesthetist. I love what I do but I longed for an avenue to expand my creative energy. ask the expert By Holly CaSaroll

Q

I want a fresh start for the New Year for my face and body. Where do I start?

Y

ou are not alone, everyone is thinking about selfrenewal now, and it is never too late to have your new beginning. I am not going to repeat the obvious things we can do, such as diet, exercise, and moisturize, rather my wish is to give some insight and innovative ways you can complement these, by addressing your face, body, and mind, as well as your emotions.

THE FACE

Our face is what we see first when we look in the mirror. If we don’t look good to ourselves, we won’t feel good about ourselves. I am a proponent of looking your best without surgery, and with minimal to no social downtime. That is why I love facial treatments, lasers, and natural injectable treatments. You can literally transform your skin and rewind the clock in just an hour, and in some cases, just minutes. OxyGeneo™ is a treatment that is new to the United States meant to refine and re-texturize your skin. Using oxygen methods, and infusion of collagen stimulating nutrients, you can gently and efficiently make your skin glow in just a 30 minute session.

changer. It can permanently destroy inches of fat without surgery, and is an alternative to Liposuction, if you have only a few inches of fat you want removed. Lastly, if you need a mommy makeover, Venus SculptFX can tighten the skin and smooth cellulite better than its predecessors.

THE MIND

Everyone’s stress is at peak levels, and it wears daily on our joy and our health. I recommend a Naturopathic Physician, like Dr. Doug Cutler, who can test you for food sensitivities, toxin levels, hormones, cortisol, vitamins and minerals, and even your neurotransmitter levels in your brain, all of which can contribute to your anxiety and depression. In addition, meditation, deep breathing, and changing your story about your life can greatly enhance your overall well-being. Holly CaSaroll, Founder of FACE Skincare~Medical~Wellness An Integrative Skin and Wellness Clinic 248.663.0161 • facebeautyscience.com

If your skin has more demanding needs, such as lines, wrinkles, and sun damage, then VIVA may be a great option for you. VIVA is a laser that has little to no downtime, and can transform your skin in just 3 sessions. To finish off perfecting your skin, I recommend fillers. Perlane or Voluma can restore mid face volume for 1-2 years, in just a 10 minute session. They are completely natural, containing Hyaluronic Acid, which is already contained within our skin.

THE BODY

We can’t feel good about ourselves or our health, unless we detoxify and cleanse any barriers. I love the results I have seen with Infrared body wraps. The difference for people is everything from weight and inch loss, to increased energy. I recommend twice a week for four weeks to start. The other complaint I hear most is from people who can’t get rid of their stubborn belly fat, even with exercise. That is where Vanquish has been a real game 18 | MY Magazine

Divorce Diaries

Call me Oprah By Annette Benson

FINANCIALLY EMPOWERING

WOMEN

“Dedicated to the success of our clients through quality planning and thoughtful advice.”

There’s something magical about receiving a gift. Perhaps it’s the gift itself, the excitement of unwrapping the mystery, or the heartfelt appreciation for the gift giver. Not long ago, I received one of the best gifts I have ever received. This special gift continues to give each and every time I use it, and, best of all, it’s free!

SINCLAIR

Like so many of you, I enjoyed Oprah’s talk show for years. My favorite show each year was Oprah’s Favorite Things Holiday Giveaway. Not only did the audience go ballistic with joy, Oprah beamed with happiness because of her desire and ability to share with others. So, like the great and powerful Oprah, I would like to share the transformative gift I recently received with each of you. Believe it or not, the gift giver was actually Oprah herself!

PATRICE L. J. SINCLAIR Certified Financial Planner™ Certified Estate Planner™ Senior Vice President, Investments Investment Management Consultant

Oprah told the audience at her two-day event at the Palace of Auburn Hills that people (such as your spouse, significant other, children, friends, coworkers, clients, employees and acquaintances) all want the same thing: to be seen, to be heard, and to know that they matter. While this sounds simple and obvious to most, to actually integrate this information into your daily thoughts and interactions with other human beings is something different; this is where the gift begins.

691 N. Squirrel Road, Suite 222 Auburn Hills, MI 48326 Tel: 248.276.2828 . 800.525.2731 Fax: 866.522.9594 sinclairwmg.com patrice.sinclair@raymondjames.com

Let’s start internally. The next time you complain about something or someone (as we all do), stop and ask yourself “Do I feel seen or heard? Do I feel like I matter?” In answering these questions, you are already on the path to solving your own problem. Let’s take an external look, too. When someone is complaining, frustrated, or displaying anger toward you, take a step back before you react to the words they are firing at you, and attempt to tap into what they are actually feeling instead of just their words. Are you showing that person that you hear them? Do they matter to you, and, if so, do they know it? The mere moments you take to ponder these questions is just enough time to allow you to catch your breath and disengage in a battle that need not be fought.

Lynn Darmon PSYCHIC MEDIUM REIKI PRACTITIONER SERVICES PROVIDED: In person | By phone E-mail | Skype In home

Compassion and empathy are the great benefits of this tremendous gift. You also gain clarity and acceptance. Perhaps you’ll recognize that the person in pain is not someone you want to invest in and, rather than perpetuating the misery, you choose to walk away. Whatever the outcome, whatever your answers are, asking yourself these questions gives you perspective, understanding, and movement to a resolution that you can wrap up and tie in a symbolic bow.

Featured on ABC’s 20/20, Huffington Post, and in “Everyday Oracles” written by Ann Bolinger-McQuade.

A piece of peace. What could possibly be a better gift? I hope you will accept this gift and pay it forward as I have just done. I would also like to thank all of you for your wonderful feedback about my new website. It’s an accurate reflection of my strong conviction in justice, integrity, and in having a playful sense of humor!

I’m here to answer your questions, develop a strategy, and secure your future. If you are interested in a free consultation, please visit my website www.AnnetteBensonLaw.com or call me at 248-646-2600.

Kathy Heniff “I believe in the whole experience. It is such a privilege to be a part of someone’s birth.” Kathy Heniff spent her life taking care of people through raising her three sons, as a nurse for 38 years, and through volunteering. Kathy was celebrating the holidays at her home, in Shelby Township, when she suffered chest pain during Christmas dinner. She was treated for a muscle pull and pneumonia; she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer, six months later. “I am the one who is supposed to take care of people. I asked the oncologist, are you sure you have the right patient?’” Kathy has been in remission since June 9, 2014 and feels blessed to return back to work as manager of pre-op and post-op at UnaSource Surgery Center in Troy. Kathy attributes recovery to the support of her loved ones and church community, St. John Vianney. “I had no idea people cared the way that they did. The prayers and phone calls; I felt so loved. I found the positive in this.” Spending the majority of her career as an obstetrical nurse, Kathy is looking forward to returning to volunteering at Abigayle House—a ministry teaching childbirth to unwed or homeless mothers. “I believe in the whole experience. It is such a privilege to be a part of someone’s birth.” Kathy says this experience has made her stronger in her faith. “I feel like I have been put on earth to do what I’m doing, what I was born to do. I made a difference because I did what I think God wanted me to do—nurturing and helping take care of others.”

Tamara Bedi “Helping women and children in heartache is the nearest and dearest to my heart.” Tamara Bedi believes a person’s greatest contribution is the ability to love and give to others. She has followed this passion through devotion to family, friends, and the community. Working as account executive marketing director for Jane Doe Investigations, and a retail clerk at Gap Inc., Tamara still makes time to give back to the community, contributing to Dress for Success, a nonprofit providing career development and professional attire to disadvantaged women. “You wouldn’t believe how giving women an outfit for an interview could change their life,” said Tamara. “Helping women and children in heartache is the nearest and dearest to my heart.” Tamara believes in imparting the importance of giving back on future generations, passing on her philanthropic spirit to her two children, Katelyn and Jacob, who are involved in community service at church and college. “My kids are a lot like myself, very caring and kindhearted and they give back; they both have these attitudes. It warms my heart when I get feedback from the community about how they think of others first.” Originally from Seattle, WA, Tamara moved to Commerce Township in 1986, working as a flight attendant with Northwest Airlines. Two of her favorite places are San Diego, for its perfect weather, and Alaska, “the most unique place…. there is just something about all of that nature.” With Tamara’s youngest leaving for college, she hopes to make more time for travel, reading, and gardening. “I feel like this is going to be my year. I am excited to see what 2015 is going to bring.”

Change Your Mind Change the World By Elaine Grohman

A

s we begin a new year, many of us find ourselves making resolutions. We resolve to exercise more, to give up one thing or another, to work harder or to work less, to spend more time with family or to spend more time alone; the list goes on and on. We begin with good but often half-hearted intentions, and, as a result, our resolutions go to the wayside and old patterns re-emerge. I believe this happens because the underlying premise of a resolution is judgment and judgment makes us feel bad about ourselves. It rarely works out well. Throughout life we have been taught to judge things, people, events, and circumstances. The problem is that judgment never resolves anything. Judgment is simply a declaration of one opinion over another, thereby making one wrong and one right, and, as a result, there is little progress made. People feel bad about themselves, and the process begins again. We find ourselves in the same old patterns, and as Albert Einstein stated, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” His wisdom was never gleaned by resolution, but rather by imaginative, creative, and insightful thinking. Another lesser known quote by Einstein adds depth to the first. “We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive.” Since judgment and resolution go hand in hand, it is nearly impossible for real change to occur. In order for any problem to be resolved, we must first learn how to discover possible solutions. We then need to examine how these solutions might benefit others and ourselves, and then change our minds about the perceived problem. Focusing solely on the problem does not bring about solutions, but changing your mind about it does. The human mind is complex and powerful, but the mind is not the brain. The brain is the keeper of knowledge, an accumulated wealth of information that has been used for both the benefit and the detriment of humanity. However, the mind is the domain of wisdom, and wisdom is underscored by 24 | MY Magazine

something far more profound and impactful than any body of knowledge can attain. Wisdom is guided by love. The complexity of our emotions drives our behavior, both good and bad, causing us to react in habitual ways. At the beginning of a new year, we “resolve” to change habits that we don’t like. We then half-heartedly try to change but don’t actually change; the cycle continues. What would our world be like if we learned to observe what is happening, accept that it is happening, and then begin to lovingly understand that some things simply are not working? Pointing fingers and blaming others does nothing but inflame the problem. Acceptance, however, allows us to pause long enough to take a look at the causes of our problems, examining our part in the cause and then changing our mind about what we are going to do about it. Poverty, domestic violence, war, hatred, inequality of all kinds—all of these things are happening at this very minute. We can only change what we are willing to look at. We hide our emotions, and then they drive our actions. Examining our emotions, and therefore our actions or inactions, opens the doors of our mind to find real and meaningful solutions. This New Year, “resolve” to use your mind so that the problems surrounding us can be resolved and become a distant memory. Use your mind to create your life. You are already doing so, whether you know it or not. Know it, then take action with love as your guide. Elaine Grohman is a speaker, author, energy healer and angel reader. Benefits of Massage therapy By Margot Kohler A widespread perception, or misconception, is that massage therapy is a luxury, one which is reserved for special occasions or when we sustain an injury. While cultures throughout Europe and other parts of the world know otherwise, it is time we change our perception of this beneficial and holistic therapy. The medical profession is slowly accepting massage therapy as a complimentary treatment to traditional medicine, and will hopefully support it as preventative medicine in the future. The benefits offered by massage therapy are numerous and have been proven to offer results. Knowing and understanding these advantages will hopefully offer you the incentive for investing in better health and well being. A few benefits of massage therapy include: Stress Reduction: Massage therapy affects our hormones, reducing the “stress” hormone known as cortisol, while also increasing the “happy” hormones of dopamine and serotonin, helping to decrease anxiety and depression. Increased Circulation: It also assists with lymphatic drainage and flushing toxins from the system. This enhanced vascular function can help reduce fatigue, promote healthier skin and hair, and strengthen the immune system. Pain Relief: A safe alternative to prescription medication, massage has proven to lessen back pain and increase function for those suffering from chronic muscle tension and spasms. The release of endorphins work in the body to help as a natural pain reliever. Enhanced Skin Condition: In addition to improving the condition of the body’s largest organ, massage also helps promote tissue regeneration to reduce stretch marks, scar tissue, and post surgical adhesions and swelling. Joint Health: Not only for injuries, massage helps to increase range of motion by decreasing joint stiffness and pain. Those suffering from arthritis and bursitis benefit greatly from massage therapy. Enhanced Sleep Quality: Not just during a massage, but afterwards, is when you can experience the best sleep. Some say that massage directly affects our delta waves, promoting a deeper and sounder sleep. In addition, some medical fields have begun integrating massage therapy into the treatment of carpel tunnel, chronic fatigue, premenstrual syndromes, migraines, and asthma. There has also been an increase in maternity massage, infant massage, and massage therapy combined together with physical therapy. The healing benefits affect not only the body, but the mind and spirit, promoting overall physical and mental balance. As a treatment or for preventative measures, prioritize your health and consider investing in your own well being. It may be the best investment you will ever make. ADVERTORIAL

Before Dr. Boyd’s facelift procedure.

At Deborah White’s heaviest, she was nearly 400lbs. That was when she decided to undergo bariatric surgery. That, along with working hard at dieting and exercise, she now has reached her goal. However, her sagging skin caused her face to age dramatically. At that point she knew surgery was her only option, and that is when she sought the advise of Dr Charles Boyd of Boyd Beauty. Dr. Boyd performed a short scar facelift and neck lift on Deb. The short scar facelift redefines the jaw line by lifting and smoothing out the sagging jowl. There was a repositioning of deeper facial structures and removal of her extra skin. The neck lift was done Deborah White at 400lbs through an incision under her chin that removed excess fatty tissue and tightened the loose skin under her neck. Both procedures were done in his office without general anesthesia. Deb highly recommends Dr Boyd and his work.

Deb’s hair was healthy, but the cut needed to be corrected. The dishwater blonde shade with some reddish tones was too light for her skin and her eyes. Because Deb’s hair was too thick in the back, I texturized it and gave her a French look, keeping the hair longer at the base of her neck. I left the bangs long and styled the hair shorter around her ears. I added dark brown lowlights on the bottom as well as on the top and then put baby blonde highlights, especially around her face, which added contrast to her color and brought out Deb’s beautiful eyes. The color contrast was truly the key. As you can see, the makeover is stunning! Not only does Deb love it, so does her husband!

~ Yiannis Karimalis 248.931.8722, www.yiannishair.com

We had a great time with Deb’s makeover. She has such a wonderful spirit and a fun personality. Deb also has the most incredible eyes that stand out a mile away! I used beige shadow on the lid and taupe eye shadow colors in the crease. I applied black eyeliner with a swipe of liquid liner into the lash line. I then added long black eyelashes to bring her eyes out even more. She has great skin, so I just applied a sheer layer of foundation to even it out a bit. I wanted to keep the skin dewy and fresh looking. She looks Amazing! ~ Make up by Aferdita Qafa, 248.877.8006 www.mymagazineoakland.com

How can I stop this? The more I try to help, the more the conflicts seem to escalate. What should I do? Kathleen D. Dear Kathleen, Obviously, libraries of books have been written on this subject. However, here are some thoughts that might prove helpful. Family members are convenient and easy targets. We feel emotionally “joined at the hip,” even trapped with them. An angry wife can divorce her cheating husband. However, a fighting brother and sister? Not so easy. This bottled up energy can explode through our feelings and hurt those we love. We can also become addicted to the passion and strong feelings created by disputes with family members. I remember working with a client who was stuck in the middle of some heavy drama from a family conflict. I asked her to look into the future. “What would it look like if your family was the way you wanted it?” After a long pause, she burst into tears and said, “I can’t see it.” I paused in the session. “Until you are willing to see a different future, I am afraid I cannot help.” Tough love? Maybe. However, later she told me it was exactly what she needed to hear.

Most of the time, it’s is not your duty or responsibility to supervise and correct the conduct of family members. We all have a full time job correcting our own. In truth, there is a backup plan that is constantly at work. We live in a world of “cause and effect,” or “karma” as some people call it. We all want to right the wrongs of the world. Yet, sometimes, we need to step back and acknowledge to ourselves, “This is really none of my business.” If your brother has borrowed $1,000 from your mother, and has never paid it back, that is between them. The universe will display its magic of cause and effect and each side will be in the grasp of a wonderful life lesson. Once again…let the universe do the heavy lifting. End of story. Here is the best part. What a relief it is when we finally realize that the universe “has our back.” We can focus on the intrinsic goodness of our family members. In the process, we will experience another universal truth, “Whatever we focus on, expands.” Sit down and make a laundry list of all the “good traits” you see in your family members. Be at one with this list and fill yourself with gratitude. It will be as if you no longer were forced to carry a heavy load. Set this list down and step back. Smile! And, as we all step into the ever present challenges in our lives, let us remember, “We are all too blessed to be stressed.” Peace and Prosperity,

John

The truth of the matter is that family conflict creates strong feelings. Nature abhors a vacuum. Strong feelings let us know we are alive. Often, we are unable to let go of these feelings because we fear that we will have nothing to replace them. I would like to share with you a perspective of the world that can be life changing. It will cost nothing, require no extra effort, and it is always waiting and willing to do its magic: Let the universe do the heavy lifting. 28 | MY Magazine

Dr. Robert Dipilla

A TEACHER, MENTOR, AND DENTIST THAT PAYS IT FORWARD

D

entists need to manage their patients’ fear and pain while carrying on conversation and treatment. They have to execute intricate procedures and educate their patients, all while racing against the clock to avoid a logjam in their waiting room. Where so many things are in the balance and disasters are measured in millimeters and fifty shades of white, this is an industry that can challenge even the most talented and confident practitioners. Despite the pressures, there is a local dentist who genuinely enjoys all aspects of this work. From general dentistry to restorative and cosmetic dentistry, facial rejuvenation and periodontal maintenance, Dr. Robert DiPilla eagerly engages with his creative work and his patients. In a well-appointed dental practice in the heart of Birmingham, with state-of-the-art aesthetics, Dr. DiPilla’s office staff makes everyone feel at home with their hospitality and warm conversation. Although most of his patients are members of the local community and neighborhood, DiPilla’s aesthetic dental work has caught the attention of many high profile, local and national, celebrities who routinely seek him out. He has earned the trust and reputation that attracts professional athletes and top level executives. He is responsible for the famous smiles of Kathie Lee Gifford, Wayne Gretzky, and Mick Jagger, to name a few. Robert DiPilla moved to New York for 15 years before moving back to the Detroit area in 2002. Although he resides here with a successful practice, he still maintains his professional office in New York as well. The newest and most exciting project is another office location that will be opening in downtown Detroit. If you haven’t visited downtown Detroit recently, it is difficult to convey the explosion of business and commerce that is happening within the city borders. The timing is fantastic for opening an office in the heart of this amazing city that is coming to life. “We are working on a big project in Detroit,” shares Dr. DiPilla. “I am fortunate enough to be an acquaintance of Dan Gilbert, and we will be opening a very sophisticated office that will represent and accommodate the clientele that is in Detroit now.” DiPilla’s new office will be located in the heart of the financial district in the iconic skyscraper at Jefferson and Woodward, the One Woodward Avenue building. The building houses the new Fifth Third Bank Michigan Regional Headquarters and overlooks the International Riverfront. “This is not a clinic per se, but it will help establish an extension of our services here in Birmingham because

Dr. Robert and Anabelle Dipilla there are a lot of executives in Detroit who need services in that location.” Indeed, there is a storm of local, national, and international investors, bankers, and corporate industry executives that are flooding into the city of Detroit. Demand for convenient, high-level, professional services for this demographic is growing. The projected timeline for opening the new office is March 2015. It begs the question “how are you going to manage all of this?” The answer is intriguing and really speaks to the heart of Dr. Robert DiPilla. The co-founder of a nonprofit organization called the Pacific Aesthetic Continuum (PAC), Dr. DiPilla has been involved with teaching, mentoring, lecturing, and providing handson programs through this organization. He serves as the Program Director for the Detroit and New York regions of this organization. Although any dentist can apply for coursework through the PAC, the PAC is designed to provide scholarships to dentists who might not otherwise have the means to take these types of courses. PAC courses help practitioners reach much higher skill levels in aesthetics, functional dentistry, practice management, and

treatment. The program is designed to graduate top level practitioners who can then teach and mentor others. “Graduates have to be committed, have a good heart, good skills, and be motivated to pay this forward by mentoring another doctor,” conveys DiPilla. “I was fortunate enough to have a fantastic mentor when I graduated. That is why I wanted to create this.” Dr. DiPilla is in a unique position where he can select the top talent from this program to practice with him. Dr. DiPilla’s energy around his new Detroit office and his nonprofit organization is contagious. He ignites his staff and those who come to seek professional treatment with the vitality of a man who wakes up every day and does what he loves to do. His appetite and passion for his work in aesthetic dentistry is refreshing. Robert DiPilla decided at a very young age that he was going to grow up to be a dentist, and he set about with intention to do just that. “This may sound silly, but do you remember Hermey the elf from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? Hermey was my man,” he smiles. Hermey is the character in the favorite children’s movie, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer & the Island of Misfit Toys, who desperately wanted to be a dentist, not an elf. That story stuck with young Robert DiPilla. A few years later, the orthodontist who put braces on his teeth was a great influence on his future, as well. “My orthodontist had four or five assistants, and four or five chairs in a row,” explains DiPilla. “He would come in, say hello, change this wire, change this wire, change this wire, and then wash his hands, and that was it! I thought, I can do that.” A native Detroiter, born the son of a tailor and raised on the east side of St. Clair Shores and the Grosse Pointe border, Dr. DiPilla comes from modest beginnings. He attended Notre Dame High School and learned to work hard at an early age. DiPilla focused on his future as a dentist, choosing U of D for undergraduate work and for dental school. He commuted back and forth during his education and worked part time to pay for his schooling.

Following graduation, an opportunity arose to attend the Harvard Club in Boston and study for a clinical residency in dental implants. That was the catalytic event that opened the young Doctor’s eyes to the broader spectrum of what could be done with dentistry beyond routine office procedures. While DiPilla’s dental office does its share of traditional dental appointments, this is not your typical dental practice. DiPilla’s office performs facial aesthetics with Botox and Juvederm, and several other procedures that are becoming more widespread. In fact, in the next 10 to 15 years, you will see a lot of dentists, oral surgeons, plastic surgeons, and dermatologists performing facial aesthetics.

“When you stop to think about it, these are the professionals you really want doing facial aesthetics,” shares Dr. DiPilla. “Oral surgeons and aesthetic dentists are very qualified to do this work. They have studied and really understand facial mechanics, anatomy, and physiology. They know the origin and insertion of all the facial muscles.” He took his first aesthetic course at Baylor in 1994. The two top aesthetic practitioners in the country—Larry Rosenthal and Bill Dickerson—were there teaching dentists how to do veneers. They took note of the young dentist during the aesthetic course, and recruited DiPilla to move to New York and practice with them. “I had the great fortune to work on some really big names in New York. It was a very tough and very rewarding experience,” he shares. He is busy with other projects that touch his heart, including formulating his own brand of certified organic, fluoride-free toothpaste for children. “Fluoride is great typically for preventing cavities, but young children tend to swallow their toothpaste. One of the biggest issues with children under six years of age is fluorosis of the stomach due to ingestion of fluoride toothpaste,” clarifies Dr. DiPilla. Considering himself fortunate, demonstrating gratitude by giving back means a lot to Dr. DiPilla and his wife, Anabelle, a native of the Dominican Republic. Their family frequently visits the small nation. There is an orphanage that has received a lot of philanthropic attention from the DiPilla

family, who often donates toothpaste, toothbrushes, diapers and formula. Locally, the Grace Center of Hope is a favorite charity, as well. “We are looking to see what other resources we can contribute to the Dominican Republic and expand our giving,” says Anabelle. “The Dominican Republic is a third world county and there are so many needs to be met; we want to help in any way we can.” Anabelle is busy with her own full time career as the Vice President of Relationship Management for Realty Capital Securities. She is interested in getting their children more involved in the family philanthropic efforts. “They are very blessed and need to understand that and learn to give back to those less fortunate,” she shares. Recognized as a leader and an expert resource in aesthetic dentistry, Dr. DiPilla regularly contributes to nationally circulated trade publications. Over his 25 years as a clinician, he has learned a lot, and his work shows it. His patients leave with beautiful, natural smiles. “I told my wife that when it stops being fun, then I will be finished,” beams DiPilla. That clearly won’t be any time soon. Divine Messages LYNN DARMON By Mary Meldrum Photo by Steve Ragland

M

ost of us have pondered heaven at some time. If you haven’t, one glance at a stunning image of the universe from the world’s most powerful telescope, ALMA (the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub millimeter Array), will jump-start your imagination. What else is out there? Who else is out there? Is anyone listening? Does heaven exist? Where do we go after we die? We have all measured our knowledge against the possibility of the presence of things we cannot fully perceive, or things that we cannot explain, like heaven or contact with spirits or ghosts. Mediums are individuals who act as conduits that receive and share information from the Other Side. Lynn Darmon is a wellknown local medium. She is a soft-spoken, admittedly low-tech, gentle woman with a warm demeanor. She is sought out by housewives, parents, authors, physicians, attorneys, psychologists, friends, CEOs, and others who are looking to connect with somebody who has passed. There are people who not only believe that spirits can communicate with us, but they do it on a regular basis. Lynn provides people access to that communication and validation for anyone grieving a loved one who has passed. She has honed her listening and understanding of the spirit world. Just like tuning into a radio station, sometimes perceiving things we can’t typically see, hear or feel is a matter of dialing our senses in to the right frequency.

34 | MY Magazine

www.mymagazineoakland.com

“I have no ability to control the information that is passed to me. I simply share it,” explains Lynn. “What I perceive is not always what is requested or expected.

Daughter Alexandra (Allie) Levitin, Lynn, and Son, Daniel Levitin.

We have all experienced déjà vu, or felt a gut instinct about something. That sixth sense or intuition that tells you that something is not right, or that somebody is watching you, or that something bad is about to happen. Hunters hone and routinely rely on this type of “sensing” of their environment. They become skilled at heightening their senses. They have elevated their listening skills and understanding of natural clues about their environment and their prey. As a medium, Lynn believes everybody is born with the ability to do what she does. She has better access to communication with spirits than the average person because she has fine-tuned her sensing abilities. She is clairvoyant, clairaudient, and clairsentient, which are a heightened sense of seeing, hearing, and form of empathic energy. It is the ability to feel the present, past or future physical and emotional states of others. If you have ever had a “gut feeling”—good or bad—when you meet someone, when you walk into a building, or a home, then you have experienced clairsentience and possess the ability to some extent. This is an energetic operating system that we are born with and can develop. “It is important to know that everyone can exercise their free will when talking about their future,” Lynn explains, “what I offer is spiritual guidance, it’s really up to you.” “Sometimes people who contact me can be skeptical,” shares Lynn. “But if they have made an appointment and are here, then there is a reason that they are here talking to me.” Lynn explains that her job is simply to allow information to flow. She also says that it is not always conversation that she receives. She hears noise, voices or information; sometimes she sees individuals or letters or color. There are times when she feels things in her gut or heart, and can smell things such as cigarettes, perfume or smoke from a fire.

Since she is only a passive receiver of information, she cannot guarantee who is going to come through. She also cannot control when any information comes through to her. Instances of persistent messages from a spirit can haunt her for days, weeks or months. So while most of us do not know how to tap into this energetic communication, Lynn Darmon is an open channel that is sometimes bombarded with spirit information.

“Spirits can sometimes be very persistent,” smiles Lynn. People who typically seek her guidance are grieving parents who long to know that their child who has passed is in a better place. Others are children who long to connect with a parent who has passed. Those that seek a reading with Lynn or any medium are simply acting on love. Perhaps love is the energy that bridges the divide between the living and those who have passed. After all, love is a very powerful energy that we all feel, and the very best thing that we do. Lynn has been featured on ABC’s 20/20, Body Mind Spirit Radio, written up in the Huffington Post, the yahoo news, the Detroit Free Press, Oakland Press, on the front page of AOL, and featured in the recently published “Everyday Oracles” by Ann Bolinger-McQuade.

PUTTING YOUR BEST FACE

Forward By Mary Meldrum

W

e are so lucky to live in this modern time with so many rich moisturizers, eye creams, and supercharged serums formulated for dry skin, wrinkles, and dark spots. Many of these products are organic and offer antioxidants, and protection from ultraviolet light as well. Additionally, there are dozens of surgical and non-surgical procedures available that can help revive your skin’s youthful vitality and health. There is little excuse for letting your beautiful face fade away into early aging without putting up a valiant fight! Industry experts agree that the best way to make sure that your face and your complexion always look their best and brightest is to maintain or start a routine for your skin care. Dr. Charles Boyd, a local plastic surgeon, whose credentials include a double board certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery, agrees. “Successful long term skin care starts with a compliant daily routine. I recommend a product with antioxidants, such as a Vitamin C & E, a retinol for anti-aging, and an SPF 30 or greater for sun defense.”

Sometimes it can be difficult, after a particularly grueling day, when you are tired and just want to skip all the pre-bedtime regiments that you usually march through and go straight to bed. We have all been there, but unless you are truly sick and need to get to bed and stay there, mustering up the energy to wash, tone, exfoliate, and moisturize is important for long term health of your skin.

of the sun, or, at the very least, protect yourself when you are in it. Antioxidants are a defense system that fight against and balance out free radicals that contribute to the aging process.”

There is a wide spectrum of great skin products and nonsurgical facial procedures available to consumers. You can find them online, in department stores, drug stores, and some very good ones at clinical offices and spas. Understanding what your unique skin needs are and finding the procedures and products that bring you the best results is important.

While there are many products that have antioxidants in them, Dr. Boyd recommends Detroit Skin’s CE Ferulic Power Serum (www.detroitskin. com).

Holly CaSaroll, CEO of FACE Medical Spa in Bingham Farms has seen some impressive results with products and nonsurgical procedures. She states, “Pearl fractional laser takes 10 years off the face by removing wrinkles, brown spots, and scarring, Ultherapy gives you a lift as an alternative to a facelift, and Injectables replace lost volume in the lips, cheeks and under eye area. In three simple treatments you can dramatically rewind the clock without surgery.” The underlying physiology of everyone’s skin is a little different, so knowing how certain products benefit your skin type and putting together the optimum skin care strategy for your routine is critical. Dr. Ellen Janetzke, another local, board certified plastic surgeon, was asked if you could recommend one skin care product to your patients to use that would help them the most with retaining their facial youth, what product would you recommend? “Retin-A or something similar, hands down, no question,” she responded. Dr. Ellen’s office in Birmingham offers a variety of non-surgical procedures. When asked what are the top non-surgical procedures that you perform that you believe make the most difference in your patients, Dr. Ellen names neurotoxins like Botox, Fillers, and Profractional laser resurfacing as her top choices. Your skin is actually the largest organ in your body. Because it is the protective shield for the rest of your body and organs, it takes a beating from the outside world. Sun, wind, toxins, trauma, infections, and diseases bombard and challenge your skin’s strength and integrity every day. The wear and tear can show up in the form of wrinkles, scars, freckles, age spots, and areas of breakdown where cancer and other skin conditions can take hold. Dr. Boyd recommends prevention as well as maintenance. “Smoke, stress, alcohol, and many other factors may cause free radicals and speed up the aging process,” he emphasizes. “It is important to stay positive, minimize negative facial expressions, and most importantly, stay out

“It is my absolute favorite product for antioxidants,” he shares. These products prove to be very valuable over time. As we age, many essential functions of our skin and other body functions begin to operate at suboptimal levels. The frequency and number of cellular reproduction mistakes increase. New cells are less vital and less healthy, so they deteriorate faster, leaving the body with more labor-intensive “clean-up” of dead and dying cells. So, as we age, a larger percentage of our cells are useless and can interfere with normal cellular processes. The aging process also brings about a shortening of the DNA helix, which can trigger apoptosis, or “programmed cell death.” This is most impactful in the mitochondria of each cell where we derive our energy. As time passes, incremental accumulations cause increased damage to healthy DNA, which leads to accelerated cell death, and our bodies cannot regenerate new cells fast enough to keep up with the aging and death of cells. This process is most obvious in our skin. The older we get, the thinner our skin becomes. Skin procedures and products can only slow, not stop, the aging process. Surgical procedures done by a qualified plastic surgeon, on the other hand, can physically turn back the clock on an aging face. The choice by some individuals to opt for facial surgery is a big decision and typically undertaken after a lot of research and consideration of all the options. Dr. Ellen cites some good reasons for someone to choose surgery. “Good reasons for choosing facial surgery would be that it can help you look as young as you feel, and make you look more refreshed,” she shares. “It can also correct something that really bothers you when you look in the mirror.” Men and women who regularly take good care of their skin with advanced products and procedures can look decades younger than their contemporaries. We can count ourselves very fortunate to live in a time when medical professionals can offer us so much to add to our youth and vitality and enhance our facial skin health as we age.

Light Body Lightworker and Ascension

By Judy Lipson

PART 1

Whether you are new to these concepts or are quite familiar with them, they are all part of remembering and becoming who you really are.

38 | MY Magazine

www.mymagazineoakland.com

L

ight Body, Lightworker, Ascension: My goal is to explain these trending concepts for individuals who have never heard these terms, as well as to provide more extensive information for those who have familiarity with them.

Remembering…. LIGHT BODY describes the awakening to “awareness” that so many are experiencing at this time. It is the process of bringing more light, in the form of Divine intelligence, into your physical form, thoughts, energy field and your life experiences. Light is goodness, Divine knowledge, and harmony. This light floods our whole being and begins the effects, or sensations, that may be experienced as a result of the physical body trying to shift into Light Body. You will read more about this later. It is no coincidence that many are following a more spiritual path with a focus on community, love, peace, harmony, and compassion. You may find your source of spirituality from Divine intelligence, within yourself, in prayer, meditation, or in nature. Nothing is outside of nature. Nature is the Divine; Divine is nature; it’s all part of the natural workings of the universe. I offer harmony as a potentially new concept for your consideration. Many strive for peace, yet peace often refers to the absence of conflict and is a term used in a world where we perceive separation. Even the synonyms of peace include: reconciliation and ceasefire. In contrast, here are the similes for harmony: accord, synchronization, congruence, and coherence. Harmony means even when you are not in agreement with others you are willing to work together to make it so. Peace often includes tolerance. Harmony is acceptance. Did you resonate with the synonyms of harmony? You are likely on the path toward Light Body. Here are other signs of Light Body: Your students, children, grandchildren, and you may be having more intuitive experiences. You may be questioning commonly held personal or societal beliefs. You may feel a quickening within. You may notice that you see things from a higher perspective. You may have a sense that our humanity is destined for something much different than what you are inundated with on the news—war, hatred, conflict, FEAR. You sense that there is something wonderfully significant coming for yourself or for humanity. And you may even wonder if what you are personally or professionally doing is sufficient. All of these are signs of increased spirituality that opens you further to the Wisdom of the Light. Have you noticed that many of society’s previous beliefs are now being questioned? Societal relationships used to be understood through being separate and fear, but more

and more of us are now realizing that we are all one. In fact, each of us is helping to create a new paradigm. Some will emanate the light (harmony, compassion, oneness), while others will illuminate the shadow (fear, separateness, conflict). Both light and shadow are required in this journey that we are on as we— our bodies, spirit, soul, earth, and even our Galaxy and Universe—evolve. Light/Shadow is one of many contrasts that you know. Additional contrasts include day/night, Divine masculine/Divine feminine, yin/yang, individual/community, and separateness/ unity. These contrasts, and the paradox that recognizes the importance of both sides, are part of your life experience. The paradox of separateness and unity is an evolution that began when the soul explored unity through oneness. Then, at some point, to more fully understand oneness, our souls recognized the paradoxical need for contrast and chose the experience of exploring unity through separation. The time is now to come full circle and to again make our connection to the source. This unification does not replace the knowledge and information that we have attained during our period of separation. On the contrary, the knowledge that we have accumulated has brought us the ability to prove the esoteric truth that so many of us know and that will bring us fully to the evolved state of oneness. It isn’t “either/or,” nor is it separation vs. oneness. Rather it is “both/and,” as well as unity and individuality. We can feel oneness while fully appreciating individuality. These are significant paradigm shifts! LIGHTWORKERS are helping individuals and society make these shifts, using the principles of light to heal themselves, others, the planet, and other dimensions. One of the hallmarks of Light Body work is bringing balance to the seemingly paradoxical contrasts in society, and

within oneself. Many previous generations have lived with the focus on the Divine masculine essence: a belief that one thought and action is correct and that all others are wrong, doing and fixing; perceiving the world in a rather black and white manner, and dominance over others in personal relationships and even governments. As so often happens when change occurs, there’s a tendency to move to the opposite side of the spectrum. We are now moving in the direction of the Divine feminine: to live and work cooperatively; being rather than doing and allowing various shades of gray to peacefully coexist. The Divine feminine nurtures, heals, comforts, motivates, and manifests. The Divine masculine allows us to do, take action, and move things forward. Both are needed for optimal living and cocreating. Balance of the masculine and feminine is necessary for systems, relationships, and within you as an individual. Shifting from separation to oneness and establishing the balance of the feminine and masculine may not be as easy as one thinks; and these are only two of the paradigm shifts that we are undergoing. The challenge in Light Body work is shifting your many facets—thoughts, emotions, intentions, energy, and your physicality—and moving from the old paradigm to the new.

Becoming…. ASCENSION is this evolution toward full Light Body. It involves the shifting of many different paradigms and takes time. The speed and duration vary for different individuals. Willingness and proper support appear to ease and sometimes speed the process. The process will include shifts in thought, emotion, energy, and physicality. Yet this is not linear. ENERGY is the easiest to shift since energy follows the light and your own inner truth. It may seem as if the awakening began when an idea was read or heard and you noticed a deep resonance of truth within. But truth is not recognized by your mind. The recognition comes from the hologram of knowledge, carried within your energy/soul, of the time when you were unified with source. Thus, your energetic hologram was reminded of who you really are, and your energy then directs your thoughts, emotions, and physicality. THOUGHTS can be relatively easy to shift once you give yourself permission to accept an alternate belief. Your logical mind will replace an old thought with a new belief, especially when it is recognized as part of a truth that was temporarily lost. ego when you try to see differently and move to oneness. The ego is not a fan of different or change. The ego, and its cousin the inner child, thinks that change will place us in grave danger. This is paradoxical because separateness is what has kept you from feeling safe, and unity is what brings you to security and wholeness. Though the process of shifting the emotions can seem messy and feel scary, the deep safety that is experienced is well worth the journey. In fact, it doesn’t take a long time to experience your inner safety. As Eckhart Tolle wrote in The New Earth, the pain-body fears and runs. The pain-body is nearly tangible and is full of fear and emotional pain. It is actually your fear of looking at what is in the pain-body that causes the distress. When you finally stop running from your own fear, and instead turn to face what you thought you were running from, you realize that it is not very scary at all. Even considering this possibility may have you “quaking in your boots.” I had that same response when I read about the pain-body in Tolle’s book several years ago. I could not imagine that he was speaking truth. But one day, months after, I was tired of the fear and decided to try. It is truly amazing! I hope that you will try this yourself to know that it is indeed accurate. Once you turn to face yourself, you recognize a strength that you have never known before. PHYSICALITY: Everything, including your body, is ascending at this time. From the first holographic memory of who you really are, your body was infused with light and began its ascension. Since the body is dense, it has difficulty comfortably shifting with this infusion of light. The resulting Light Body effects are often experienced with what our societal model calls symptoms. This is most disconcerting when you don’t understand what is happening. In the next edition of MY Magazine, I will provide a different paradigm model for what is happening, as well as how to minimize the symptoms and ease this process. This article is for informational purposes and is not meant to replace medical care.

JUST Breathe Combat the common cold, winter chills and blues with yoga By Barbara Krajenke Photographer Steve Ragland Makeup artist Brandi Brancheau

S

niffles, sneezes, winter chills, and depression may be an expectation of the winter season. Yet, this can be a great time to embark on a yoga practice, which will help to increase immunity, warm the body, and combat depression. Yoga, meaning “yoking together,” is a branch of ayurvedic medicine with its practice being traced back to the fifth and sixth centuries BCE. Yoga has benefits beyond the physical, uniting the mind, body and spirit. Yoga practice is personal and progressive, cultivated over time to address what the body and

42 | MY Magazine

mind need at that moment. Yoga is approachable by everyone and every age group and ability, “even the most gentle practice helps to balance life,” Lynda Makowski, owner of Namaste´ Yoga in Royal Oak. Personally I have found yoga beneficial in treating aliments, chills, and lack of concentration I experience during the winter months. When unable to attend a class, I supplement my practice with DVDs or YouTube videos catering my practice to specific needs. I find that even a few minutes of yoga a day can boost my mood and help to keep my body in shape.

IMMUNITY

Ninety-five percent of illness stem from stress—stress releases cortisol affecting the parasympathetic nervous system relating to the fight or flight response. Cortisol needs to be released through physical activity to avoid a build up that can lead to a decreased immunity. Pranayma, or breath, is done in unison with yoga poses. Each pose in combination with the breath is designed to affect certain parts of the body and mind, including vital organs, the nervous system, and glands. “The difference between exercising and yoga is focusing on the breath,” Makowski. The breath calms the mind and keeps you present while the poses activate the body, lowering cortisol levels. Studies have shown that yoga acts on the pathways of the hypothalamus, responsible for the functioning of the nervous system, pituitary gland, and endocrine system. Practicing yoga helps to encourage proper functioning and balance between these systems, alleviating stress, creating balance between the body and mind, and balancing hormones. Yoga research shows that the benefits of yoga on immunity are due to its effect on circulating the levels of cytokines— a signaling cell regulating the immune system response. Yoga aids the immune system through chest opening postures, such as the bridge pose to activate the thymus gland, inversions such as downward facing dog to encourage circulation and the flow of white blood cells, and legs up the wall postures to stimulate the lymph system. “Putting legs up the wall is energizing, activating the lymphatic system and helps to heal injuries and headaches,” says Makowski. Hip openers and twists activate areas of lymph glands, giving the body a rise of immune boosting cells.

WINTER CHILLS

The winter months can leave you chilled and feeling unable to warm up. Ujjayi breath, (victorious breath) is a form of pranayma used to warm the body. Ujjayi breath creates internal body heat through a rhythmic breath created in the diaphragm. Ujjayi breath is inhaled and exhaled through the nose beginning in the lower belly, rising to the lower rib cage, upper chest and throat. Ujjayi breath is used also to strengthen the diaphragm, clear toxins, regulate blood pressure, oxygenate the body, and build energy. Yoga poses designed to build heat and energize the body include chair poses, arm balances, and warrior 1, activating multiple muscle groups and concentration.

SEASON AFFECTIVE DISORDER

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is low mood felt in the

winter months due to lack of sunlight and Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps the body to produce serotonin; low serotonin levels are attributed to depression. “Regular yoga practice is important especially in the winter time, with the yoga breath and movement you’re getting a hit of endorphin, breathing and yoga goes a long way with that,” says Makowski. Research has found that SAD is related to the pineal gland and its production of melatonin responsible for regulating the circadian rhythm (sleep/wake cycle) and youthfulness. The ability to produce melatonin wanes with age. Pranayma can increase melatonin production through alternate nostril breathing. “Key to relaxation of yoga is breathing, deep breaths that are rhythmic. This rhythm changes brain chemistry and calms the nervous system,” says Andrea von Behern, owner of Body Language Fitness and Yoga in Commerce Township. Restorative and sun salutations poses aid in alleviating SAD by helping to regulate the endocrine system. Restorative poses such as legs up the wall, corpse, and half lotus help to relax the mind and body while activating vital organs. Sun salutation poses help to invigorate the body include raised arm poses, forward bends, and lunges. Inhale and exhale all the benefits a yoga practice has to offer— the well-being of body and mind, creating warmth, and enhancing immunity and mood. The science and art behind yoga can be both inwardly and outwardly beneficial. Pranayama and yoga poses activate muscles and regulate body functions. Yoga is a personal practice that can be as gentle or as rigorous as you feel needed. Hope to see you on the mat! Namaste´. ENJOY YOUR GREENS AND GET LEAN

in 2015! By Chef Dawn Bause

H

ey! Ho! I’m so excited about the New Year and turning over a new leaf….a green leaf that is. Even though there is not a whole lot of green in these parts of the country this time of year, we can still seek out and consume more foods sporting these gorgeous emerald hues. For the past few years, arugula, kale, spinach, and Swiss chard have taken center stage on our plates and in our mugs. Green smoothies are all the rage, and, in my book, they continue to be the easiest way to consume those 5-7 daily servings of fruits and veggies we need for optimum health. Salads, however, are an even better way because it involves chewing rather than drinking these foods. And lettuce wraps, boats, and cups make eating “real food” simple, nutritious, and delicious. Here’s a funny quote I read about eating real food: “You’re smart and you know what real food is, so stop eating crap. Crap is food that comes from a drive-thru window, a vending machine, box, bag, or wrapper.” Did you know that American’s consume about 30% of their calories a day from snacks? No other country does this! The

44 | MY Magazine

key to reaching your highest energy levels and staying slim is to choose whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and hard boiled eggs to snack on and incorporate into your meals. So, in the spirit of turning over that new green leaf this year, why not start today? Clear the junk food out of your cabinets. Take the candy jar off your desk. Remove the temptation, and pick one habit or two to remove from your diet. Start making changes. The more drastic the change, the higher the possibility for drastic results, but the higher likelihood that you’ll fail as soon as you hit a bump in the road, so balance these changes with your personality. You might stumble a few times before you find your stride or you find a method that works for you. In this issue, I want to share some recipes using lettuce instead of bread for fun and healthy finger foods. They can be served as an appetizer, or will make a full and balanced meal by adding some brown rice, quinoa, barley, faro, or other grain to the filing or on the side. They are even great to take “on the go!”

Pork & Quinoa Lettuce Wraps with Thai Chili and Bell Pepper Make 6-8 This is a super simple recipe that is easy to double or triple for groups. This dish is also great to make ahead of time; it reheats really well, and the leftovers get even more flavorful after a night spent in the fridge.

Ingredients: 1 lb lean ground pork 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive or coconut oil. 2 red cayenne peppers sliced into rounds*

Fluff your quinoa gently with a fork and set it to the side.

2 bell peppers, diced (yellow, red, or orange) 2 cloves of fresh garlic, minced or grated 2” piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated 4 oz. coconut cream (found in a can at Asian stores) or 2 tbsp. heavy cream 3 green onions/scallions, chopped Kosher salt (coarse)

*You can de-seed the chilies if you prefer less heat, but I left them in and found the gentle spice to be perfect.

Quinoa 1 cup quinoa, well rinsed

In a large skillet, over medium-high heat, heat just a touch of olive oil or coconut oil until it shimmers. Add the ground pork and a hefty two-fingered pinch of kosher salt and sauté, stirring occasionally to break up the meat, until the pork is cooked through and is caramelized and browned in spots. Transfer the cooked & browned pork to a bowl using a slotted spoon, and hold it to the side. If there is an excessive amount of fat left in the pan, pour some of it out, but leave just enough to use to sauté the vegetables without them being dry or sticking to the pan. With the pan back over medium heat, add the diced bell peppers and the red chilies. Sauté the peppers for 3-4 minutes, until they start to soften and wilt slightly at the edges. Add the garlic and ginger, and sauté, stirring frequently, until the garlic is fragrant and toasty, another 1-2 minutes.

1¼ cups water Pinch of salt

To serve: 2 limes, cut into wedges Splash of Sriracha sauce (a Thai hot red sauce) or any other hot sauce of your liking Fresh butter lettuce leaves (romaine will work in a pinch) Fresh cilantro leaves First, make the quinoa. Bring your water and pinch of salt to a boil. When the water is boiling, add the quinoa. Stir well to combine, and bring back to a boil. Cover the pot, turn the heat down to a simmer (low/medium), and cook the quinoa till it is just tender and you can see the opaque white little curlicue clearly in each seed (this takes about 10-15 minutes).

Stir the cooked ground pork back into the pan along with the cooked & fluffed quinoa and the coconut cream; stir well to combine all of the flavors. Cook the mixture for another 2 minutes, until it is completely warmed through and the coconut milk has absorbed into the quinoa and pork. Stir in the chopped green onion, and take the mixture off of the heat. Taste, and adjust salt levels if necessary. Scoop the pork mixture into the butter lettuce cups, and serve with lots of fresh lime on the side. Top with fresh cilantro, and drizzle Sriracha sauce over the top if you like a bit of extra spice.

cilantro for garnish Gently break off the lettuce leaves, taking care to leave them intact. Wash and dry thoroughly, and set aside. MY | Jim’s Blog

All Hail the Plant I wouldn’t know a Lady Gaga tune if you paid me but couldn’t escape the news awhile back that she’d worn a meat dress to a function. Didn’t do much for me, but I gather she was making a statement. What it did do was get me thinking about vegetarianism.

My sister Linda’s a vegetarian and so are my Scottish Deerhounds Daisy and Tibby. Unlike most dogs their diets are based on Tykie’s veggie dog food with snacks of bananas, carrots and fruit, plus licorice All Sorts) Linda’s is a bit more complex and not based on what I feed her and what she can poach from the counter-top. Me, I’m a flexitarian, veggie mostly save the occasional lamb kibbee or rare piece of meat. Nearly every day, it’s egg whites, fruit and whatever veggies and grains abound. As you know, vegetarianism is the practice of following a diet that includes vegetables, cereal grains and nuts and seeds, with or without dairy products or eggs, and no meat or fish, of course, although there are various diet varieties. The ranks of practitioners are growing. In 2000 2.3 percent of Americans were vegetarians, rising to 2.8 percent four years later. These days, according to a study by Vegetarians in America, 3.2 percent of U.S. residents — 7.3 million folks — follow that diet, including the likes of Chelsea Clinton and Deepak Chopra. Gandhi and Greek philosophers Epicurus and Diogenes thrived on plant-based nutrition, as did Abraham Lincoln and Albert Einstein. It’s no wonder, really. Studies have long shown that a high consumption of animal-based foods is linked to more chronic disease, while those who employed a vegetarian diet are healthier overall. But we’ve been slow to come around. When I was growing up meals were always a meat, a starch and a veggie. It went without saying. If you removed the meat – egads! – what the heck would go in that space? In those days, vegetarians were “out there,” crazy hippies or something. But we soon learned that when we consume

more protein – meat – than we need, we are at risk of heart disease, higher blood cholesterol and other problems. Last summer, a federal panel issued a major report suggesting that people who are on a plant-based diet have lower blood pressure and weigh less. Other studies have concluded that, compared to non-vegetarians, mortality from heart disease is 30 percent lower among men and 20 percent for women. Vegetarians also tend to have a lower body mass index and fewer incidences of diabetes, renal disease, osteoporosis and dementia. The ongoing Cornell Oxford China Project , begun in 1983, is studying the statistical relationship between diet and disease, and gives important support for vegetarian diets, which are relatively inexpensive and better for the planet, by the way. The green diet. A common misperception is that veggie meals are complicated or boring, or that they require obscure ingredients. Vegetarianism is now mainstream, so many grocery stores, including ours, carry a wide variety of meat alternatives, plus a bounty of fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes and spices. And it’s easy to find recipes and meal ideas. You can do healthful nachos, for instance, using organic or blue corn chips (and skipping the ground beef ), layering with canned kidney beans (instead of the refried stuff) and canned sliced jalapenos with grated organic soy cheese over everything. Pop the platter in the microwave for a minute and garnish with salsa. Some great quick stuff. Of course, you need to replace the protein you lose with the meat. Essential amino acids can be had by consuming a spectrum of complementary plant sources like brown rice, beans, hummus, tofu, legumes, nuts, tempeh (a soy product) and seitan , all of which Hiller’s carries. Winter

Stay Healthily Hydrated This W

hen the mercury drops, it’s more important than ever to stay properly hydrated. During the winter, people may not seem to sweat as much as in the summer, but that doesn’t lessen one’s risk of dehydration. “As a hospital physician, I’ve seen far too many people succumb to dehydration-related health scares, stemming from high-elevation ski trips to travel to simply forgetting to drink water because it’s cold outside,” says Dr. Ralph E. Holsworth, director of clinical and scientific research for Essentia Water and medical physician at Southeast Colorado Hospital. “Staying properly hydrated can help ensure good health through the winter, reduce dry skin and even help you flush toxins out of your body to reduce the chances of getting a winter cold or flu.”

BOOST YOUR BODY’S HYDRATION

Roughly 75 percent of the North American population is chronically dehydrated. By the time you feel thirsty (and sometimes when you don’t) you may already be getting dehydrated. Whether you’re skiing or just taking a walk on a brisk day, the experts at Essentia Water provide these simple tips to help you stay hydrated throughout the winter season and beyond.

Set a daily water intake goal. A good rule of thumb for daily water intake from food and fluids is 2 liters for females and 2.5 liters for males with moderate physical activity levels. Adjust your personal goal to account for climate and activity level. Start your day by filling a tumbler or setting out bottles of your favorite water totaling your goal. Supplement with healthy foods that have high water content like soup, salad and pears.

WINTER IT UP

During cooler weather, chilled water isn’t very enticing. To make it more appealing, warm a mug of water or add a burst of flavor from your favorite winter fruit like oranges, tangerines or cranberries. Drop in a cinnamon stick for an added flavor kick and enticing aroma.

CHECK THE MIRROR

A tried and true way to know if you’re getting enough water is to check your mirror. If your skin appears dry and flaky, it’s time to drink more fluids. Drink electrolyte-enhanced alkaline water (also called functional water). Wellness experts agree that disease and infection have a hard time thriving in an alkaline

www.mymagazineoakland.com

MY Magazine | 49

environment. High-pH water can help neutralize acid levels and restore your body to a natural state. Functional water, such as Essentia Water, the top selling alkaline water, can help you avoid or fight winter colds and flu, hydrate your skin and re-hydrate someone who is showing signs of dehydration.

PACK THE H20

From carrying a backpack to wearing a special hydration pack – it’s important to bring water with you during winter outings. If you simply can’t bring it with you, be sure you have a list of stores that offer bottled water, and keep a supply of it in your car’s trunk for emergencies. While you may not feel it, your body is in need of proper hydration even on the coldest winter days.
