Monarch Butterfly Walks Flying thousands of miles at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour and a mile high in the sky, Monarch butterflies return annually to the same trees at the San Leandro Marina and hunker down to spend the winter. For more than a decade, the City of San Leandro has sponsored the Monarch Butterfly Program to share this exceptional example of our natural environment with the community. Learn about the life cycle and mysterious migrations of the Monarch butterfly from an expert. After a brief talk take a short walk to see large clusters of butterflies on the Eucalyptus trees. This is one of the few places in Alameda County to witness this natural phenomenon! Wear comfortable shoes that can get a bit dirty. We’ll walk two blocks to the site on paved surfaces, then on grass to view the butterflies. Bring binoculars or borrow some of ours! The overwintering site is NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Participants must visit the site with the naturalist. Weekday group tours available on a limited basis by contacting sanleandrobutterflies@earthlink.net. Protect Your Kids when they’re alone! AIKIDO for Children and Teens • 1033 MacArthur Blvd. Whether alone or in a group, children rely on what they’ve learned to get them out of difficult situations when you are not there. Give them something better than a cell phone for security – teach them how to look after themselves. Aikido is a non-violent. Aikido is a non-violent martial art. Aikido provides excellent physical and mental conditioning, enabling a person under attack to assume control over the situation without giving in to the creation of violence. Aikido provides a creative, challenging atmosphere where beginners are consistently taught with care and respect with emphasis on clear, precise movements which become graceful and effective techniques. Children’s classes strive to meet the following goals: development and expansion of awareness, concentration, flexibility, the nurturing of relationships with others, the encouragement of self-esteem, and reinforcement of self-confidence. Instruction revolves around physical exercises designed to improve physical coordination, such as learning how to fall without injury. In conjunction with basic principles of confident movement, the children are given progressively more advanced instruction in Aikido techniques. About the Instructor: Aikido of San Leandro was founded in 1984 by instructor Pat Hendricks Sensei. She holds a 7th degree black belt and has trained extensively in Iwama, Japan.
