When third-graders started reading online with mentors, there were some pretty high expectations. But nobody was quite prepared for what actually happened. 6 lee county Living 2015-16

Lee County Schools, United Way and community volunteers united to help the students. But as it turned out, it wasn’t just the students who felt the rewards.

L

indsay Tipton was in a board meeting when the timer sounded on her phone. Realizing it was time to read, she excused herself, ran out to the car, launched the Skype app on her phone and waited for Josmar Benitez to appear. They dove into a book and about 20 minutes later, it was time to say goodbye for the week. Tipton returned to her meeting and at the end, when everyone talked about what was going on the in the community, Tipton explained why she left. She told everyone how she was part of I Read, You Read, a locally created initiative where adult mentors read through books with students who need extra practice. After making the connection and taking care of some pleasantries, they dive into a book — the student reading one page and the adult reading the next. Occasionally, the mentors ask a question about the plot or ask the students what might happen next. But for the most part, they just read, explore the new worlds they encounter in print and enjoy getting to know each other. “I wanted to encourage everyone to be a part of it because it was so rewarding for me,” Tipton told other board members at the Lee County Partnership for Children. “I know it’s meant for the students, but I just loved doing it. And when we got to the end and had a chance to go meet them in person, it was so much fun. “This is such a great idea and I hope it spreads. I definitely want to do it again.”

I Read, You Read Started just last fall, I Read, You Read was created by Dr. Carol Chappell, Lee County Schools’ executive director of instruction for performance, to give struggling readers a chance to practice. The idea was to give students something Chappell calls “guided practice.” Instead of teaching students how to read, which is what usually happens in the classroom,

mentors are listening to their students practice reading one-on-one. When students come to a word they don’t know, mentors can step in and help them figure it out. If students don’t seem to be following the story, mentors can ask a question or suggest going back and reading it again. The problem: How can you possibly find enough mentors who can leave their jobs in the middle of the day, drive

across the county, get checked into the school, read with students, check out and drive back to the office? And even if you can find some who can, how many would be willing to go through such an ordeal to spend 20 minutes listening to a thirdgrader read? Technology was the answer. Since all students grades three and above are issued laptops with cameras, the reading could be done online. And by using the free Skype application, mentors could read on their desktop computer at work or just about anywhere else using a tablet or smartphone. But would reading online work as well as reading in person? Chappell had her doubts. But soon into a pilot program pairing executives at First Bank with students at Tramway Elementary, those concerns were put to rest. “What I wanted to learn from the pilot was if the children and their volunteer could bond without being physically present and they actually seems to bond faster,” Chappell says. “I think that might be because when you’re looking

at someone face to face through the computer, you have their complete, undivided attention. The children bonded with the volunteers from the very beginning.” Results were clear right off the bat. Mentors say they were amazed at how more fluidly students were reading after just a few sessions. As the eight-week program wound to a close, students were breezing past words that would

have stopped them cold when the reading began. And while the numbers are just coming in, students are scoring much higher on reading comprehension assessments. One of them improved from the 16th percentile at the beginning of the school year to the 54th. It’s hard to say how much of that was I Read, You Read, but it certainly was a factor and Chappell couldn’t be happier.

Online at Deep River This isn’t just some sort of bitter medicine for students; it’s become the highlight of their week. Moments before connecting with their mentors, third-graders bounced into a computer

Cedric McNeill and his mentor, Rebecca Wyhof, finally met in person during a celebration held at Deep River Elementary after I Read, You Read concluded.

classroom at Deep River Elementary as if it were Christmas morning and there were presents under the tree. And it’s not just because they’re escaping the classroom. These students are actually giving up part of their recess … to read. And they’re loving every minute of it. Sitting around a table to talk about reading with their friends online, Josmar, Cedric McNeill and Maria Guerrero could barely contain their joy. They described what was happening in the books they were reading — “Afternoon on the Amazon” — and when each question was posed, one student began only to have the others jump right in. Why do you enjoy reading with your friends online? “Reading can make your life change,” said Maria. “And now if someone comes to your house and they don’t know how to read, you can teach them.” Struck by what Maria said, Josmar said that he likes reading with his mentor Mikeal Basinger just as his brother likes reading with him. “If you have a little brother and he wants to really know how to read, there’s the opportunity to show him how to read,” he said. “ I teach my brother how to read. That’s how they learn fast. I learned slowly because I didn’t have a big brother to show me.” 10 lee county Living 2015-16

Jill Britt, the literacy coach at Deep River, says the students’ enthusiasm is no illusion. They want to learn. They want more time to read. And the change has been remarkable. “It’s going to help with their fluency. It’s going to help with their confidence. It’s going to help with their comprehension and the whole gamut. I felt like they would do well, but I was really blown away.” Actually Cedric may have put it best. When it was time to stop one day, he wanted to forge on: “This is better than fun,” he told his mentor. “It’s better than recess.”

It Takes a Village While Chappell developed the idea, she’s quick to point out that I Read, You Read could never have happened without broad community support. That begins with United Way of Lee County, a partner in the project, which has played a pivotal role in the initiative’s success. The local nonprofit uses its media and connections to promote I Read, You Read throughout the community and recruits volunteer mentors to read. Mentors signed on through VolunteerLee.com, a United Way website designed to connect volunteers of all kinds with organizations that need help. “Lee County Schools could not have

done this without our partnerships with United Way,” Chappell says. “We just don’t have access to the volunteers that they have.” Then there are organizations throughout the community that have embraced I Read, You Read, places like St. Luke United Methodist Church, where seven people have been trained as mentors as part of an ongoing staff project, or First Bank, where executives participated in the pilot program before continuing beyond. And, of course, the volunteers themselves — 14 of them reading once a week with the seven students at Deep River, one with each student on Tuesday and another on Thursday. United Way Executive Director Jan Hayes didn’t know quite what to expect when she heard the idea. It sounded like a really good plan, but there were a lot of unknowns. And, let’s face it, usually, things don’t turn out exactly as you hope. I Read, You Read, however, was the exception. “This has exceeded all of our expectations,” Hayes said. “The children absolutely love reading with their mentors. The adults say they may be enjoying it even more than the children. The students’ reading has improved more than you could imagine. And the community has supported it all. “What could possibly be better than that?” ❙❚

verything at the Lee Regional Fair seems big and bold. Sitting at a long picnic table beside the hamburger stand, you can see the huge, flashing Ferris wheel rotate along the skyline. Nonstop sound blares from gasoline engines and the featured stages nearby. Dense smoke drifting from the burger grill makes you really, really hungry. But some of the more engaging things to do at the fair are not quite as big, not nearly as bold. A few are even tucked away just off the glitzy midway. That’s the case for “Cuentos y Canciones,” translated in English as “Tales and Tunes,” a free performance combining Latin American folktales and music. Standing on stage just beyond the picnic tables and lawn chairs are Alex Weiss and Li-Lan Hsiang-Weiss, AKA “Señor Blanco” and “La Chinita,” Señor Blanco with his cornet and La Chinita behind the congas. With fervor and style, they move through a short playlist of Latin tunes, and as spectators approach the stage with their cameras, Señor Blanco plays to them without skipping a beat, even while nailing some impressively high notes. After a while, tunes give way to tales, and Señor Blanco begins recounting an old Cuban story. While on a family picnic, some young, mischievous mice stumble upon a cat on the other side of a fence and decide to have some fun. They laugh and poke fun at the poor cat until he’s had enough. The cat leaps across the fence and a chase begins, something Señor Blanco describes in vivid detail. The mice are trapped, but mother mouse has an idea. She barks at the cat, which gets scared and runs away. The lesson: It always pays to speak another language.

“Tales and Tunes” is great entertainment, but more than just another act at the Lee Regional Fair. It’s presented by El Refugio/The Refuge Family Resource Center of Jonesboro United Methodist Church to connect cultures in the community. Bringing people together is what the outreach is all about, and the lesson of the barking mouse helps make the point in a lively and engaging way. When the tunes resume, crosscultural connections become even more tangible. La Chinita walks into the audience and brings people of all kinds onto the stage. Young and old. Men and women. Folks from all cultural backgrounds. She passes out maracas and tambourines before giving a few quick instructions. Then Señor Blanco sets the beat, the music soars and, this time, everyone joins in. Li-Lan Hsiang-Weiss, left, and Alex Weiss, who bill themselves as “La Chinita” and “Señor Blanco,” strike just the right note on stage at the Lee Regional Fair.

very time we start searching for dishes you can’t miss, we begin by asking readers for their favorites. And that was no exception earlier this year when we started looking for some of the area’s best salads. Within moments, suggestions came pouring in via e-mail, voice mail and Facebook. If there was any doubt at all that salads were popular among local diners, it didn’t last long. Scores of suggestions honed in on the extensive salad menu at Cafe 121 in Sanford, but nobody seemed to agree on which were best. After trying several, we couldn’t either. Chef Gregg Hamm goes decidedly old school with the Blue Wedge, one of his personal favorites and a throwback to the vintage steakhouse where salads were almost an afterthought — often, a quickly-cut wedge of iceberg lettuce with a heavy-handed splash of dressing. Asian But Cafe 121 puts an artistic, contemporary spin on the American classic. Sure enough, it begins with that familiar iceberg wedge, but that’s just the canvas. Chef Hamm adds crumbled bacon, blue cheese, pecans and crispy noodles. Then, he drizzles everything with dressing — not just one of his signature recipes, but two: ranch and honey balsamic.

4

Cafe Choice Fresh Choice Cafe

Another local favorite is the Asian Salad with fried chicken strips that are good enough to anchor any Southern menu. The chicken, which also can be ordered grilled, is given an Eastern accent with mandarin oranges, peanuts, crispy noodles and Cafe 121’s Asian dressing. Two salads begin with similar elements — fresh greens, tomatoes, Blue Wedge cucumbers, carrots — before diverging. Chef Hamm’s Strawberry Fields Salad finishes with feta cheese, pecans, sliced strawberries and honey balsamic dressing. His Vineyard Salad adds cheese, grilled chicken, green apples, walnuts and honey mustard. The options seem endless. Chef Hamm designs salads based on seasonal ingredients, flavor parings and culinary trends. All of them are made to order from the freshest ingredients he can find and tossed in dressings made in house Strawberry from scratch. Fields Salads play a prominent role at Cafe 121 because they’re nutritious and take advantage of fresh, local ingredients. But most of all, they’re a lighter option that so many diners enjoy. Cafe Choice } Fresh Choice Cafe At first glance, this salad seems like a fairly common offering. But the Cafe Choice throws just enough curves to make it interesting … not to mention a fresh and healthy choice. Turkey and cheese on crisp romaine lettuce is the standard part. But this cheese is havarti, a semisoft Danish variety that you don’t find on salads every day, and it’s elevated further by an inspired combination of tart Granny Smith apples, crunchy sunflower seeds and a luscious, fat-free raspberry vinaigrette that transforms this guilt-free meal into an indulgent, flavorful treat. Cafe Choice was already a popular menu item when the sister team of Judy Powell and Patty Eiland purchased Fresh Choice Cafe eight years ago and, as the old saying goes, you don’t mess with success. But it has inspired some specials. Judy says they’ve created versions with fresh pears, peaches and mangoes. They’ve experimented with different cheeses and replaced the turkey with grilled chicken. They’ve even added cranberries. But no matter what, Cafe Choice has remained on the menu, which has kept a lot of salad aficionados very, very happy.

805 Wicker Street, Sanford, 919.775.6008 freshchoicecafe.com

Greek Salad } Kathy’s Java Express Inspired by ingredients common along the Mediterranean coast, Greek salads now come in all varieties. The one thing they have in common is a sea of sharp, distinct flavors. That’s true for the Greek Salad at Kathy’s Java Express, which begins with traditional ingredients like romaine lettuce, spinach, black olives and feta cheese before venturing into uncharted territory with roasted red peppers and artichoke hearts. The salad is usually served with a nice Greek dressing, but the homemade balsamic vinaigrette draws the dish a little closer to the traditional version, which is dressed simply with olive oil. Meat lovers can add chicken, steak or turkey. But with such bold flavors, the meatless version holds its own, making it a great choice for vegetarians. Owner Kathy Addison says the salad reflects her love for tangy foods and fresh ingredients, most of which are prepared in house, and guests apparently share her taste. Greek Salad is one of the top selling items on the cafe menu, something Kathy credits to offering a taste of freshness in a world of fried food.

Thai Chicken Salad } La Dolce Vita Some of the best culinary creations happen by accident. Legend has it that the ubiquitous potato chip started out as culinary revenge; when a customer complained that his fried potatoes were cut too thick, the chef retaliated by slicing the next batch absurdly thin and loading them with salt. The rest is history. Add to that list the Thai Chicken Salad at La Dolce Vita, created when one customer asked to have the Thai Chicken Wrap thrown onto a bed of lettuce to cut some carbs. The dish was a hit, starting out as an off-menu item before making it onto the regular list. It begins with mesclun, a fresh mix of young, green salad leaves, that’s topped with pulled chicken, almond slivers, fresh mushrooms and green onions. But the highlight is La Dolce Vita’s Thai peanut dressing, a spicy, creamy accent that could liven just about any dish. And spicy is a good way to describe it; there’s a distinctive kick, but nothing excessively hot or overbearing. “It’s been well received,” says restaurant owner Renee Fincher. “It’s very unique and the flavors meld well together, while remaining light and refreshing.”

Super Sampler Salad Plate } Mrs. Lacy’s Magnolia House If you’re looking for a great salad, but can’t decide what you want, head down to Mrs. Lacy’s Magnolia House and order their Super Sampler Salad Plate. Restaurateur Faye Schulz has been in business for 20 years and says the sampler is one of the most popular items on her menu. Sounds like a pretty good endorsement to us. Created especially for diners who crave variety (or who simply can’t make up their minds), the Super Sampler Salad Plate offers a choice of four homemade items. Don’t miss the chicken salad — small chunks of white meat combined with a light dressing and just enough celery to add some crunch — or the broccoli salad with bacon, onions and raisins; it’s one of the better versions of a traditional dish. But what else? Maybe add some fruit with the Waldorf salad, a mix of apples, grapes, raisins and pecans. Or choose your favorites from tuna, potato, cranberry, pasta, macaroni, pimento or egg salads. Mrs. Lacy’s Super Sampler Salad Plate doesn’t get you off the hook entirely; you’ll still have a few choices to make. But it’s a lot easier than selecting just one, and with a list of options this long and this good, you really can’t go wrong.

Sanford and Yixing in Harmony 桑福德与宜兴市的和谐发展

aving concluded introductory remarks emphasizing what their two cities have in common, Mayor Zhang Lijun and Mayor Chet Mann took seats next to each other with a line of city officials standing behind. At the table adorned with a colorful flower arrangement and one single staff displaying small national flags for the United States of America and People’s Republic of China, both mayors took a pen in hand and signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Sanford and Yixing were officially sister cities. Sister city agreements are long-term, international relationships designed to foster cultural and economic cooperation. They often begin with a series of artistic exchanges, but increasingly are focused on economic development, something particularly important in a global marketplace that becomes more competitive every day. At first glance, the new siblings seem like an odd couple. Sanford has about 30,000 residents, give or take; Yixing is home to about 1.24 million, according to recent estimates, and stands in one of the world’s largest urban regions. About 130 miles to the east, across Taihu Lake, stands the sprawling megalopolis engulfing Shanghai, the largest city in China and national center for finance and commerce. Sanford was incorporated in 1874; Yixing was established during the Qin Dynasty in 221 B.C. What they share is a rich pottery legacy, industrial success and a commitment to building livable cities, important points that the mayors stressed during the signing ceremony.

Cultural Understanding 文化理解 A decade ago, who could have believed that Sanford would have a sister city half a world away — or that it would actually make perfect sense? But that was before the growing relationship between China and Sanford was kindled at Central Carolina Community College. It began when CCCC became the first community college in the nation to be awarded a Confucius Classroom. The educational center led by Professor Wang Guan is an outpost of the Confucius Institute at North Carolina State University. Both the larger “institutes” and smaller “classrooms” are supported by a nonprofit affiliate of China’s Ministry of Education to teach the Chinese language and foster exchanges with communities around the world. lee county Living 2015-16 19

Mayor Zhang Lijun of Yixing and Mayor Chet Mann of Sanford participate in a signing ceremony, uniting the two cities for cultural and economic cooperation. Sitting behind their national flags, the mayors signed an agreement before Mayor Mann presented the “key to his city” to his Chinese colleague.

That became an essential foundation for the relationship between Yixing and Sanford. “This is one of those things that people in China look for,” said CCCC President Dr. T.E. Marchant. “They look to see if you already have a relationship with China — that you have a real interest in their country — and that’s something they can tell right away when you’re part of the Confucius network.” The Confucius Classroom has already infused Chinese culture into Lee County. Not only does it offer Chinese language instruction, but it also draws Chinese artists, musicians and dancers to Sanford. Marchant said the college will host the Peking Opera this fall during its United States tour, and that’s a really big deal. The traditional theater group performing music, dance and acrobatics is one of its country’s most renowned cultural institutions. “I tell people that the Peking Opera will be going to all of the best cities in the world,” said Marchant. “Los Angeles, New York, Washington and Sanford.” Mayor Mann wants to build an even stronger cultural understanding. There’s the possibility of a student exchange between CCCC and Yixing’s vocational college, assuming local officials can arrange housing for their Chinese guests. Down the road, he’s hoping the two cities might exchange pottery galleries, bringing world-renowned zisha teapots to Sanford and sending regional American pottery to Yixing.

Economic Partnership

经济合作

While cultural ties are important, the competitive global environment means that sister city relationships are increasingly focused on economics. Many Lee County companies already do business with China, and local officials hope they can parlay those into economic partnerships that will strengthen the future for both cities. In global terms, the relationship between China and the United States could be a lucrative one. According to the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook, China currently has the world’s second largest economy with a Gross Domestic Product of about $11.2 trillion. That’s behind the United States’ $18.1 trillion economy, but far ahead of thirdranked Japan at just $4.2 trillion. Over the next five years, the United States and China are projected to separate themselves from the other nations even more. Kirk Bradley, CEO and president of Lee-Moore Capital Company and part of Sanford’s delegation to China, said commercial partnerships are often built on existing relationships and that is especially true for China. That’s why the sister city agreement is so important: It formalizes and cultivates the kind of relationship that is a prerequisite for economic investment. Bradley is optimistic that the Sanford-Yixing relationship will

be good for business. He can imagine some large Chinese industry locating here to tap into the American market and perhaps one of the many companies operating in Sanford opening a new facility in Yixing or its surrounding Jiangsu province. But he has one word of caution: Don’t expect anything to happen right away. With a nationally directed economy and various internal policies to navigate, China’s business decisions often take longer than most Americans expect. During their trip to China, local officials participated in the seventh annual Wuxi International Sister Cities Forum, a global economic development conference taking place not far from Yixing. Bradley said many of the cities attending had some sort of economic project under way, but most of them took years to materialize — even though nearly all of the cities had economic development officials working full-time in their sister cities. “This is a long-term commitment,”

Bradley said. “It’s a process that takes time. In America, we’re used to deciding to do something and doing it in very short order. It’s just not the way this is done.” Friendship

友谊长存

While these relationships are nothing new for larger cities, Mayor Mann and Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce President Bob Joyce have been giving presentations around the community to explain exactly what the agreement means for local business and culture. The mayor says this community has been very curious and overwhelmingly supportive, which is necessary for success. “The Chinese economy is a vibrant economy and they want to do business with us and others,” he said. “We can choose to accept this opportunity and get involved or we can

stay among ourselves. I think this is great for Sanford.” Similar enthusiasm seems to drive policy in China. Professor Wang said her country formalized more than 200 sister relationships with communities throughout the United States from the time China and the United States normalized relations in 1979 until four years ago. “I think it is important for people in China, especially those who are willing to embrace a new culture and traditions, as well as those who also want to share the beauty of their own,” she said. “Besides, the sister city relationships provide a focus on cultural exchange, business and educational opportunities which will greatly benefit Sanford and Yixing.” During his welcoming comments as part of the signing ceremony, Mayor Zhang quoted an old Chinese saying: “It is good to welcome friends from afar.” For Sanford and Yixing, that friendship is just beginning. ❙❚

t’s bitterly cold outside, but surrounding a brightly lit field of grass, hundreds of people are bundled up tight … watching a little girl sleep. With a crash of noise, she bolts upright in her black, metal bed and clutches her teddy bear for comfort. As the sound begins to crescendo and becomes more shrill, the little girl grabs her head in anguish, tosses aside her blanket and flees. With her long, braided hair twisting in the breeze, she’s pursued through a sea of woodwinds by frightening characters from her own imagination. When she panics, the music gets even louder and more frenetic. As she experiences moments of contemplation and peace, the notes become more soothing and calm. It doesn’t turn out well. Consumed by her nightmares, she returns to bed and another little girl emerges to be pursued. When the musical spectacle concludes, all of those bundled bodies surrounding the field break into applause. • • • “Insomnium,” an original work performed by the Southern Lee High School Band, is one of the more spectacular halftime shows you’ll ever see — not to mention far from the usual routine. Tonight’s performance at the Brick City Bowl is more creative. It is theatrical. Surreal. Think Federico Fellini meets John Philip Sousa. Music Director Alexander Alberti, who gears his shows toward competitions, likes to tell stories. This one, about a little girl whose nightmares leap from her mind into the real world, he describes as “creepy stuff, but really fun.” His students were begging for a dark show, and he delivered.

Being avant garde wasn’t the show’s only distinction. “Insomnium” was created by Mr. Alberti. Original music. Original choreography. In fact, he caters each new production to the skills of his musicians — pushing them a bit, but still providing the kind of score that showcases their skill. “I believe that students should have a show that is specially tailored to their needs and strengths,” Mr. Alberti says. “One of the benefits of being a composer is the ability to create shows for your students that meet them where they are in their musical development.” That thoughtful approach may have been lost on tonight’s appreciative audience. All they knew was that this was not the typical halftime show. And it was very good. The little girl, played by Landry Overton, explores her dreams and flees her nightmares in “Insomnium.”

Art Walk

Wine tasting. Art show. Small-business showcase. Fundraiser. Art Walk draws locals downtown each spring for a leisurely afternoon exploring some of the best Sanford has to offer. It was created as a fundraiser for Temple Theatre soon after Producing Artistic Director Peggy Taphorn arrived from New York City to guide the local institution. Peggy says the Temple desperately needed to raise money, but she didn’t want to duplicate what everyone else was doing. But two things struck her right away. There were outstanding visual artists working all over Sanford, creative types who worked quietly out of the limelight, but produced exceptional work and could always use more commercial outlets. And as someone who was new to the area, Peggy was still getting to know other businesses downtown and suspected other locals might not be familiar with all of them either. So, why not create an event to highlight both? “I thought about combining local art with trying to get people to come downtown,” she recalls. “That first year, we went to literally every business and told them about our plan: We were going to have an artist in every store and people would come downtown and spend some time and maybe even some money in the shops. Every year, I have proprietors tell me it’s one of their best days of the year. We had just a great response and it has been a fun way to raise money.”

lee county Living 2015-16 31

Art Walk has always featured artists working in participating shops and munchies to keep everyone satisfied as they meander along Steele, Carthage, Wicker and Moore streets. But some elements have changed since Art Walk’s debut. The popular wine tasting was added a few years ago; each stop features a different international wine with 18 of them featured during this year’s walk. Wine samples and a limited-edition, commemorative glass are included in a $35 admission fee that benefits Temple Theatre. Money also has been raised over the years with an art auction that once concluded the walk. That didn’t always work as well as organizers hoped, so now visitors can take home original works by winning an evening-ending raffle. One raffle ticket comes with the admission fee, but guests can buy more along the way.

can’t recall too many they’ve missed. They turned out the first time to support the Temple Theatre, but they’re two of those people Peggy had in mind when she thought about introducing local residents to the businesses downtown. Despite moving to Carolina Trace years before, they weren’t all that familiar with the local shops, and getting to visit many of them in a casual setting made an impression. “I think what the Art Walk did was open our eyes to some of the offerings in the City of Sanford,” Garey says. This year, they returned to some of their favorite spots including The Artist Loft, a gallery on South Steele Street, where their grandson took a class and the couple got a chance to meet Doug Rowe, a local painter whose work the Toleskis have purchased before. Then, they visited two or three new places. One of them was Common Thread, a nonprofit weaving studio that Dottie says is so different and fun that it’s now on their agenda when friends visit from out of town. Along the way, they sampled sandwiches from The Smoke and Barrel, a new restaurant moving into The Red Sofa’s former location;

ran into some friends who were on the walk as well; enjoyed some good wine; and spoke with an artist at Brenda’s Jewelers, even purchasing one of her pieces. Meeting the artists is one of the real attractions. “I like to meet the people who create these things, and it was a plus for us to meet some of the artists who we have purchased some of their work,” Dottie says. “Sometimes you go into a store and purchase something, but you don’t even know what that person looks like.”

A New Season Art Walk is not a one-way street. Artists appreciate the opportunity to have their work seen and, for many, the annual spring event serves as the de facto start of their creative season. Lisa Mathis is one of the community’s most respected artists and probably known best for her portraits and impressionistic paintings of nature. She says it’s always an honor to be selected for Art Walk, especially since it provides a chance to showcase her work in the spring. While artists work on different schedules, many consider the annual Brush and Palette Club Art Show in October to be the culmination of a year that begins some time in the winter — after they survive the crazy Christmas season and take a few weeks to relax and regroup during the slower month of January and perhaps even into early February. Having such a public

34 lee county Living 2015-16

show soon after gets everything rolling again. “It’s sort of a kickoff to our painting season,” Mathis says. “It kind of rejuvenates us a bit and sets our sights for the fall, because if you don’t get started now, you’re in trouble when the fall comes.” Even though Art Walk is a commercial venture for many exhibiting artists, they also appreciate everything else it has become. Mathis is a huge supporter of Temple Theatre — she calls it her favorite nonprofit — so helping raise money for the professional theater is a priority. And she, too, enjoys seeing all of the business owners, neighbors and friends downtown. “To me the Art Walk is a sort of celebration of the community,” she says. “A downtown party.” Peggy would be happy with that reaction; it echoes something she hears from others on the walk who return year after year because they’re so intrigued by the diversity of businesses downtown and engaged by all of the creative work on display. The only real challenge she faces is getting people to understand everything the Art Walk offers and getting them there that very first time. She’s still tinkering with the format, searching for just the right combination of activities that will draw more participants, show proper appreciation for local artists and fulfill the primary goals that drove Art Walk’s creation in the first place — raising more even money to helping downtown theater thrive. ❙❚

no! Uno!” shouts Elba Annis, interrupting the lively banter and announcing she’s on the verge of winning. Then the Brazilian transplant reaches toward Norm Findley, the player to her right, grasps his arm and begins some sort of bouncy dance, never once leaving her seat. Play works around the dominoes table until it’s Elba’s turn again. Looking at what’s spread out on the table in front of her, Elba begins to bounce even faster. She picks up her final white domino and matches her “6” to the “6” on a column in front of her. “I won! I won!” It is her second win in a row and she bounces even more. Elba may have taken the first two games, but there are many more to come during this afternoon’s meeting of the Dominoes Club, a group of about a dozen aficionados gathering weekly at The Enrichment Center. The group is playing a game called Mexican Train, where players match dominoes on various tracks radiating from a central hub. It’s an odd game where some of the tracks are private and can be used only by one player. Others are open for anyone and marked by a tiny plastic train engine placed on the line. Not everyone in the room has mastered the nuances of this game. Betty O’Day, who has been coming off and on for just a few months, interrupts the jovial conversation. “Can I play this?” she asks. “No, but you can play on one of these,” replies Norm, pointing to three of the six tracks. “This is weird!” Everyone laughs, including Betty, and the game chugs on.

Norm, who organizes the Dominoes Club, has played for nine years and is probably considered the local expert. But, despite his skill and Elba’s inspired victory dance, it’s not really about winning. Ask folks why they come and you’ll be told, quickly and decisively, that it’s about more important things — like friendship and camaraderie. “When I lived in California, I didn’t have a group like this,” Betty says, expressing the first sign of total seriousness all afternoon. “This is the best thing that’s happened to me since my husband died. The friends like this one and this one and this one ....” Loretta Wemmer and Charlene Watson, the other two players at the table nodded in agreement. And then someone made the next play, and the game rolled on. Arline Drumheller passes a domino during play at The Enrichment Center.

Ongoing expansion at Raleigh Exec hasn’t always been easy. But it suggests a bright future where the sky’s the limit.

an open horizon

I

t’s got to be getting a little old by now. For the last two years, Raleigh Exec, the Raleigh Executive Jetport at Sanford-Lee County, has looked a lot like a new subdivision being developed. It all began with a major runway renovation, essentially a highway project only a whole lot straighter and just 6,500 feet long. About the time that ended, building construction started popping up along the road with renovations at huge metal hangars filled with planes and offices. And now there’s even more on the horizon.

This spring will bring more “roadwork” with additional construction to strengthen taxiways used by planes moving to and from the runway. Back when the runway was renovated, it allowed larger, heavier planes to land, but the taxiways weren’t designed to handle the same weight. Changes will allow those larger planes to move easily throughout the jetport. Also coming soon: a brand new set of hangars that should begin construction later this year or early next. The details are still being worked out, but the current proposal calls for 28 new T-hangars, essentially garages to protect smaller recreational aircraft from the elements, and the waiting list already has more names than the plans have hangars. So, who knows what will be built once these are filled? The real miracle is that everything has happened while the place keeps running. Jetport Manager Greg Hudson said the goal has been to expand with as little disruption as possible to the daily operations. That’s happened, though it hasn’t always been easy. In fact, Hudson compares it to working on

a wo rk i n p ro g res s

As construction work continues at the new North Carolina Forest Service facility, Raleigh Exec manager Greg Hudson is already looking beyond the recent expansion projects more ahead. In the immediate plans are 28 new T-hangars, but that’s just the beginning for a jetport ready to soar.

your car engine and installing upgrades while the engine keeps running. On the other hand, all of the construction is probably a small price to pay for success. Opened 15 years ago as the Sanford-Lee County Regional Airport, Raleigh Exec is a popular and growing home for corporate aircraft, aviation companies, recreational

pilots and even one of the nation’s largest flying clubs. Recent construction is proof that groups of all kinds believe in its future. And they are investing.

Doing Business Elite Aircraft Services made one of those big investments. As the company outgrew its original space at Raleigh-

lee county Living 2015-16 37

Durham International Airport, company officials started searching for a solution. Their decision was to add a second location at Raleigh Exec primarily to train pilots and provide charter flights. It opened two years ago and, according to Elite owner Matt Walsh, now serves as base for a dozen planes. Apparently, that plan went well, because Walsh launched a second enterprise at Raleigh Exec last June. Elite Aircraft Maintenance, an entirely separate company, provides aircraft repair and service authorized by Cirrus Aircraft, a well-known manufacturer. Walsh said the new business has grown exponentially since its inception and upgrades at Raleigh Exec are one reason his company decided to invest. “The growth of Raleigh Executive Jetport is in direct proportion with the growth of Elite Aircraft Services,” he said. “The changes that were taking place at the jetport made it the perfect place to expand our business and start a new chapter with Elite Aircraft Maintenance.”

Don Hudson, chief inspector and mechanic for Elite Aircraft Maintenance, cleans an engine after removing a cylinder for repair. The business launched last June is just one part of the recent expansion at Raleigh Exec.

38 lee county Living 2015-16

The Non-Profit Sector It’s not just business that is investing at Raleigh Exec. The nonprofit Wings of Carolina Flying Club just finished its own construction project on the south end of the field, where the club expanded and renovated its large hangar. Club President John Gaither said the expansion gives the club more space to store aircraft parts, a larger multipurpose room and a second floor that is “habitable.” Much of what the flying club just completed was in the original plan years ago, but never quite came to fruition. Money was short back then, he said, but now the time is right. With a growing membership pushing past 380 — not to mention 13 aircraft to maintain — they needed the extra space. Now, 70 members attend the club’s monthly safety seminars, twice as many people as before. Gaither said recent jetport expansion and the new Triangle Expressway around Raleigh, designated as Highway 540, are making Raleigh Exec a “vibrant hot spot” for the regional aviation community. “It

attracts people who otherwise would have no real reason to come down to this part of the Triangle,” Gaither said. “We have members of the club who are quite active from Chapel Hill, Durham and Cary, and since 540, we even have more people from north Raleigh who can now come down to Raleigh Exec as their airport of choice.”

Good Government Even government is finding Raleigh Exec to be an attractive place to land. Some time this summer, the North Carolina Forest Service will open its new regional aviation firefighting operation at the Lee County jetport. The agency is moving into a newly renovated facility that will serve as an operational base for five planes and two helicopters used to fight forest fires. The Forest Service also plans to use its new location as a maintenance hub for more than two dozen aircraft scattered around the region. When the move was announced about two years ago, Robert Gron, director of aviation and engineering for the Forest

MARTY “Mattress ManLiving GUNTER lee county 2015-16 39

Service, said Raleigh Exec’s central location would allow the Forest Service to respond quickly to emergencies throughout central North Carolina. He also cited a competitive lease rate and other cost savings as reasons for the move. “Raleigh Exec is a well-established airport and its future looks very bright for continued growth and sustained operations,” Gron said two years ago, even before all of the recent improvements. “Having the Wings of Carolina, a large flying club, and a strong public outreach says a lot about this airport and its ties to the community. That inherent strength of a family atmosphere meshes very well with our mission of supporting local communities and protecting the state overall.”

An Open Horizon Improved infrastructure and expanding tenants are clearly good news for the jetport, especially at a time when private aviation is becoming more important than ever. Corporate flights become a lot more attractive when commercial planes are crowded and more stringent security forces executives to arrive hours before departure, and smaller airports like Raleigh Exec offer

40 lee county Living 2015-16

the added advantage of less-congested skies. Ironically, benefits of the regional jetport were driven home during the runway renovation, when many planes were forced to leave Raleigh Exec for weeks. “At Raleigh-Durham, you are constantly dealing with air traffic, waits on the ramp and it’s more expensive up there,” Gaither said. “When the runway project was in progress, we moved part of our fleet to Burlington and part of our fleet to RDU. The costs at RDU are high on just everything because those costs are targeted at large commercial aircraft. For smaller and corporate aircraft, Raleigh Exec is better.” Hudson is happy to be the place where Triangle business, nonprofits and governmental agencies can all feel at home, and he credits the jetport’s governing board for seizing the opportunity and making the kind of improvements that entice organizations to locate and invest locally. What they have created, he said, allows the jetport to continue serving as an important economic engine for Lee County and the surrounding region. As the facility continues expanding in the coming years, Hudson anticipates a larger corporate area, which will attract even more aircraft, further

expand the local tax base and adding muchneeded jobs to local economy. It also serves as a promotional tool for Lee County. After all, whether their final destination is Raleigh, Durham, Sanford or Southern Pines, Raleigh Exec is the first impression influential business executives get of the region. Having an attractive, vibrant airport only boosts the community’s image in the eyes of people controlling large companies and the millions they invest. There’s no doubt everyone will be happy when the taxiway project is finished, all have finally settled into their new homes and some of the busy construction eases. But with these improvements making the jetport more attractive and aviation becoming more important, this could be just the beginning. “I fly nearly every day and have visited many airports across the country,” said Walsh. “There are very few up to the level of quality we see at Raleigh Executive Jetport. The well-planned expansion will help to carry this airport far into the future as well as attract more corporate clients and business professionals. There is no doubt that the ‘jetport’ will be living up to its name well within the next decade. The sky is literally the limit for Raleigh Exec.” ❙❚

“Stronger communities are safer communities”

I

t’s another peaceful morning at San-Lee Park, the kind that draws so many visitors seeking rest and relaxation. As the sun rises above the trees, you can hear the steady, soothing sounds of water tumbling out of the spillway and into the creek and birds chirping overhead. Then, the first bus arrives. Preschoolers, many of them dressed in matching T-shirts and all of them shouting with joy, flow out of the bus faster than water over the falls. And then another bus pulls into the parking lot. And another. And another. Before long, almost 500 preschoolers engulf the playground next to the creek — not to mention the creek, itself. Play Daze is back again. Started just one year ago, Play Daze is an annual day of fun and games that grew from the local “Week of the Young Child” celebration, an occasion each year to recognize the needs of young children and promote early childhood education. Judy Thomas, executive director for the Coalition for Families in Lee County, says activities emphasize outdoor education and unstructured play. The idea is to give children a chance to explore their environment and exercise their creativity and imagination. Over near the playground, children with plastic strainers are sifting through the creek to see what they can discover. Across the field, others are moving up and down a hill using a rope line. And in between is the chance to play the djembe, a West African drum. After a while, some venture up the hill to explore tent camping, fort building and mud. No kidding: mud. Mud Cafe is a kitchen where mud is the main

ingredient. And then there’s the Mud Art station, which turns out to be a big hit with the Warren Williams day care crowd. Everything starts innocently with one student dipping his stick in a tub of mud and drawing lines on the “canvas,” a bed sheet suspended between two trees. But it doesn’t take long for everyone to figure out what serious fun this could be. And when the supervisor mentions that it’s fair game to throw mud against the sheets? She didn’t need to finish the sentence. Within moments, mud is flying everywhere. On the sheets for the most part. But some on the children and even adults who made the dubious decision to watch the frenzy from way too close. It is a mess. But just a bucket of water and one large towel later, order is restored, and the group wanders off to the next stop.

Abbie Soto holds a rope line as she slides down a hill during Play Daze.
