GRAND MEMORIES BY PETER CORNWALL

Remembering and catching up with past greats and reliving glories of years gone by are crucial to a club’s traditions and culture. So it made for a wonderful night of stories and reminiscing when West Adelaide celebrated its unforgettable 1983 premiership. The 40th anniversary dinner, on Friday, July 7, rekindled the Bloods’ proud history and was a pointer to future successes as those fortunate to have been a part of it revived the glory days of SANFL in the 1980s – and one of our competition’s great sides. West beat Sturt by 34 points in the ’83 grand final to climax a year of wonderful attacking football and high scoring. Under the coaching of Neil ‘King’ Kerley, who sadly passed away last June, aged 88, the Bloods booted 21.16 (142) in the grand final. But, incredibly, that was below their average score for the season – 146 points. Super-skilled premiership star Peter Meuret wowed the sellout crowd and seemed amazed himself going through the goalkicking stats of this remarkable side in a stellar season. High-flying Roger Luders led the way, becoming the first and only West player to kick 100 goals in a season, although it says something of the depth in the side to consider he finished ninth in the best-and-fairest award, won by ruck great Mark Mickan. Luders kicked 109 goals, while next for the Bloods was spectacular centre half-forward Bruce Lindner, who bagged 77. Mike Smith kicked 56, Geoff Morris 49 and bustling rovers Bernie Conlen, who finished runner-up in the Magarey Medal, and Leon Grosser each booted 48 goals. Meuret laughed Kerley didn’t mind what the opposition kicked “as long as we score more”. And they did. West kicked 29 goals in three games that season, against North the Bloods booted 30 and against

Forty years after they made names for themselves as West Adelaide premiership players, these Bloods greats were together again for a reunion dinner.

Woodville they kicked 34.17 (221). Everyone at the dinner agreed it was fun watching footy back then. While there were some greats in the side wonderfully led by courageous skipper Ian Borchard, Lindner believed the whole was greater than the sum of its parts with Kerls’ side because of the team-first ethos and remarkable bond shared between players, staff and volunteers. It was pretty clear on a great night just how unshakeable that bond is. On Pages 10-11, in his Electrifying 80s series, Dion Hayman looks back at the 1983 grand final, revealing a Bloods hero almost didn’t play. sanfl.com.au

MATCH PREVIEWS BY PETER CORNWALL

NORTH V CENTRAL The fight for finals is on in earnest at Prospect Oval. The Roosters will have been relieved to edge a game clear of the Bulldogs after a scare against the Eagles, hauling themselves back from 20 points down in the third quarter before winning by 15. Central won’t want to think about last week, 20 points up 24 minutes into the last quarter against Sturt, only to be pipped by four. But the Doggies, whose percentage is ever so slightly better than North’s, know they will be in the five if they win this one. Of course, there’s still one minor round to go after that – Central faces fourth-placed Port, which could be a critical game for both teams, and North faces Sturt, which is second. It’s been hard to work out where the Roosters fit this season, their form being patchy – they have only twice won back-to-back games and they at one stage lost five games out of six. But with their talented midfield unit seemingly all back together and with a zippier, more potent-looking attack stringing together some quick goals against the Eagles, there were signs they 4

were on their way back. But now, continuing the dramas of a stopstart year, Aaron Young has a hamstring concern and Campbell Combe is suspended for this crucial clash. Central, despite the disappointment of another close defeat, still has its fate in its hands. There’s been a lot to like about the Bulldogs as they throw everything into their finals charge but they will be looking to handle the big moments better if they are to win what’s bound to be another tight struggle.

STURT V ADELAIDE There are plenty of years the Blues and the Crows would have been fighting for top spot in this lateseason match-up. With a 13-3 record Sturt would more often than not be gunning for the minor premiership – North had a 13-5 record last year. And with the strong season Adelaide has had – it is just one game back but its percentage says plenty and is a league best 62 – they might expect to be fighting the Blues for top honours. It just shows how impressive Glenelg has been this season to all but have secured its

third minor premiership in five years. So this is an unusual secondversus-third clash without lots on the line. In just two weeks’ time, when they’ll clash in the qualifying final, it will be completely different. But this time it appears almost like a trial game. Certainly, neither side has much to prove. Sturt’s fighting qualities were highlighted in last week’s Match Previews, noting of the six games sides had come from behind at three-quarter-time to win, the Double Blues had achieved the feat three times. Well, make that four out of seven. Even by Sturt’s standards it was cutting it fine to be trailing Central by 20 points at the 24-minute-mark of the last quarter and even contemplating the possibility of a win. The Blues kept their cool knowing it was going to be a long quarter after the eight-minute delay following James Richards’ concussion injury, and in an incredible closing 10 minutes James Battersby, Tom Lewis and Casey Voss led the way, while outstanding recruit Connor McFadyen’s move from key defender to key forward turned the game on its head. And

how cool was James Mathews, who put the Blues ahead at the 19-minute-mark of the last quarter against the Eagles the previous round, as he threaded through a testing kick for the winner? The Crows picked up some nice silverware with their strong 38-point win against West in Murray Bridge, claiming the inaugural Neil Kerley Memorial Trophy in a clash that so impressively paid tribute to the SA footy great, who died last year. Their eyes will be looking towards a bigger trophy later this year and the way Kieran Strachan is leading their rucks – he had 19 disposals and 59 hit-outs to win the Neil Kerley Medal as best-afield – they’re in there with a real shot.

SOUTH V PORT Fourth-placed Port was in the spotlight last week against top side Glenelg but couldn’t snag the win in the club’s first night game under Alberton Oval’s new lights. So the Magpies, now level on wins with fifth side North and one win ahead of Central, will be feeling a bit edgy about winning at Noarlunga to pretty much wrap up a place in the finals. Jackson Mead, Trent Dumont and Hugh Jackson continued to impress as Port kept pushing the Tigers and skipper Cam Sutcliffe was leading from the front as always. South may be out of the finals race but it can still finish anywhere between sixth and the wooden spoon. So it will be chasing a big scalp to finish as high as possible and show promise of a brighter future. It was a tough game to be part of against Norwood after Nick Lowden’s tragic death but the Panthers were impressive in every way as they paid their respects and helped make the game a wonderful advertisement for all that is good about SANFL. The only thing was they left their challenge a bit late, banging on the last six goals to just fall short. The challenge is to consistently play like that.

EAGLES V GLENELG The Tigers have won three in a row and 14 of their past 15 and the Eagles have lost three in a row and seven of their past eight, so it

After the toughest of times with the sudden death of premiership team-mate Nick Lowden Norwood players deservedly celebrated their courageous win in an emotion-charged clash with South Adelaide at The Parade. Photo: David Mariuz

hardly looms as a big match on paper. But famous English soccer manager Brian Clough once said: “We had a good team on paper. Unfortunately, the game was played on grass.” So Glenelg – which will be keen to wrap up the minor premiership – won’t want to let its guard down against a side that will be keen to give coach Jade Sheedy a decent send-off. There were no easy kicks for the Bays under lights against Port but, with Corey Lyons, Matthew Allen and Darcy Bailey continuing their impressive seasons, they again got the job done. James Rowe continued to show the way for his Eagles team-mates with 27 disposals, eight clearances and a goal and big Connor Ballenden bagged four goals but, after a strong first half, they fell short against North by 15 points. Don’t rule them out on the Woodville Oval grass.

WEST V NORWOOD The Redlegs again lived up to their ‘Fortis in Procella’ – strength in adversity – ethos as they courageously lifted for what became a wonderful tribute to their late premiership team-mate Nick Lowden. The whole day could not

have been handled better and the Legs’ emotion-charged win was a fitting finish to a remarkable game that not surprisingly left coach Jade Rawlings “so proud of the way our group has rallied and the way the whole club has come together in such a tough time”. There was not a dry eye at The Parade when the final siren finally sounded, the twopoint win adding to the legend of this famous club. This clash at Richmond is the last chance for the Bloods to avoid finishing last. A win here would put it just one game behind Norwood, with a better percentage than the Redlegs and a final game to come against the Eagles. West will be desperate to end its run of seven losses to prove just how much it has improved and to retain the chance to end its run of four successive wooden spoons. There’s no doubt there have been huge inroads made by the young Bloods squad and they made the Crows fight for it in Murray Bridge in a 38-point loss. They won the clearances 41-28 and were only marginally behind (45-47) in the inside-50 count but were beaten 8.10 to 15.6, so clearly they have to make the most of their chances. sanfl.com.au

STILL IN IT TO WIN IT BY PETER ARGENT

Michael Godden has enjoyed the euphoria of a SANFL flag and the agony of grand final defeat, along with having one of SA footy’s more unusual coaching gigs. Godden describes the experience of Woodville-West Torrens’ 2011 premiership win, overcoming the powerhouse of the early 2000s Central District, as unbelievable. “It brings a big smile to my face every time someone mentions it,” Godden said. “But equally it doesn’t define my career, as there are a lot more components to being a successful coach. When you reflect on these questions, I believe the lives you impact in the role far outweigh any personal achievements.” Godden, who hails from Lameroo in the far east of the State, was on the Crows’ list for a couple of seasons after being selected at pick No. 116 in the 1992 AFL draft. He played 89 senior games for West Adelaide before a knee injury after being delisted at West Lakes ended his playing days. He straight away jumped into the coaches’ box – and has been there since. After starting out with West’s reserves, there was a stint at Glenelg, taking the Bays’ seconds to titles in 2007 and ’09. The Eagles recognised what he had to offer and he was at the helm at Oval Avenue for nine seasons, reaching three grand finals – for one win – and finishing third three times, while never missing finals. He was undefeated as SANFL State coach, having successes over WA, the VFL and NEAFL. He returned to Adelaide Football Club in 2019 and has been in charge of the SANFL side for the past three years, lifting the Crows to within two kicks of their first grand final appearance last season. His challenges coaching Adelaide in the SANFL are broader and different to those facing mentors of other sides. “You’re coaching four different teams within the side each week,” Godden said. “There are the senior AFL players who expect to be playing at the next level and are back in this team due to lack of form or opportunities or coming back from injury. Then there

Ecstatic coach Michael Godden with the Thomas Seymour Hill Premiership trophy after the Eagles’ grand final win in 2011.

are the up-and-coming AFL-listed players who are looking to perform well to get their chance at the next level. We also have the senior marquee SANFL players like ‘Wrighty’ (Matthew Wright) and Jack (Madgen) who have been there before and need to be driven in another way. Then there is the young talent, who are on our SANFL list who are endeavouring to prove themselves at this level. “I recall a week we were playing at (Wigan Oval) Unley, interstate and international players asked what sound like simple questions – including how long will it take to get there, where do I park and where are the changerooms? “We have other unique issues including not having a home ground. Port Adelaide at Alberton have won six of the eight home games this year. Saying that, the opportunity to play at Adelaide Oval, predominantly as a curtain-raiser, has been great over

the past couple of years. Clubs like South, the Eagles and Central have given up a home game to play on Adelaide Oval.” Godden also was pleased to have the opportunity to play in the Barossa against Central District and last weekend take on West Adelaide for the Neil Kerley Trophy in Murray Bridge. Godden said while the Crows’ SANFL team was a development side for its AFL counterparts, his competitive juices awaken in the heat of battle. “I do demand the best from the playing group and I know how important for the development of our group and the individual a SANFL premiership will be,” Godden said. “Winning finals and the ultimate prize will certainly be great for the playing group. At the end of the regular season we’ll need to have the right players in the correct places. And, as I’ve experienced before, you also need a bit of luck to win the title.” sanfl.com.au

HISTOR

HONOURING BOB BY ANDREW CAPEL, THE ADVERTISER

2017

1976

The Hammond family unveils the Bob Hammond Mound at Prospect Oval.

North Adelaide legend Bob Hammond has been honoured at a ground where his raking drop kicks became famous. Three years after his death aged 78 following a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease, Hammond was immortalised with the eastern side outer of Prospect Oval named the ‘Bob Hammond Mound’. “We felt this was a fitting spot because Bob made many defensive dashes at Prospect Oval and landed many of his long drop kicks in that area of the ground during his long playing career with North, exciting the big crowds,’’ Roosters board member and former player Malcolm Ellis said. North’s board decided to honour the standout full back soon after his passing but Covid restrictions and Prospect Council planning priorities put the plan on hold for three years. Fittingly, the Bob Hammond Mound was unveiled at the blockbuster Round 15 clash against Glenelg – the team which 8

sanfl.com.au

Hammond 50 years ago played his last, and arguably best, game in the epic 1973 grand final, which the Tigers won in a thriller. Hammond is one of only five players to have won three premierships with the Roosters, having played in the 1960 – his first year in league football – 1971 and 1972 flag sides. Recruited from local club Kilburn, Hammond played 234 games for the Roosters from 1960-73 and was acting captain in the 1972 grand final win against Port Adelaide and the famous Champions of Australia triumph against Carlton two weeks later. A key member of the SA team which memorably upset Victoria at the MCG in 1963, he went on to coach Norwood to premierships in 1975 and ’78, the SA state team in 1983 and AFL club Sydney (as caretaker) in 1984 before becoming the Adelaide Crows’ inaugural chairman, overseeing premierships in 1997 and ’98. Hammond served

on the AFL Commission from 2001-11 and is one of only 16 administrators to be honoured with Australian Football Hall of Fame induction, which he received in 2015. He was widely considered one of the most influential people in SA football in his six-decade contribution to the game. Hammond is a North, SANFL, Adelaide and Australian Football Hall of Fame member and was named in the Roosters’ Team of the 20th Century. The players’ race from which the Crows enter Adelaide Oval has been named after him. “Bob is one of the standout legends of our club, one of our favourite sons who will forever be in the hearts of our supporters and we are delighted to be able to honour his impact and achievements with the naming of the Bob Hammond Mound at Prospect,” North chief executive and dual premiership player Craig Burton said.

TWIN TONS BY ZAC MILBANK

Aaron Young

Two Roosters, two Magarey Medals, two 100-game milestones within two games. Aaron Young, SANFL’s fairest and most brilliant last season, played his 100th SANFL game when North Adelaide tackled Glenelg in Round 15. Campbell Combe, Magarey Medallist in 2020, reached his ton for the Roosters against the Eagles in Round 16. They say the race to the premiership is more of a marathon than a sprint. And there is no better way to describe Young’s pathway to reach 100 SANFL games. When he ran out for North against the Tigers at Prospect he had the opportunity to reflect on a 12-year journey to join the 100-club. The 30-year-old said he was grateful for the manner in which he was accepted at Menzies Crescent on his arrival via the now defunct SANFL mini draft. Having been selected by Port Adelaide in the 2010 AFL draft from Eastern Ranges FC in Victoria, Young found himself allocated to the Roosters, where he would make his league debut in 2011. He

Campbell Combe

remained aligned to North until 2012 before heading to Alberton, where he predominantly played at the top level as he racked up 76 AFL games for Port Adelaide. A move north saw Young play a further 24 AFL games for Gold Coast before deciding to return to Adelaide for the 2021 season. There was never any question the fleetfooted midfielder would return to Prospect, where he has since lit up the competition in the twilight of his career. Kilometre by kilometre, kick by kick – Young’s team-mate Combe hasn’t taken anything for granted on his route to 100 games. The Roosters superstar is never guaranteed to continue his staggering commitment of commuting from Crystal Brook to Prospect each season. But one thing continues to drive him – the pursuit of an elusive SANFL league premiership medallion. The 27-year-old admitted it was the last remaining accolade he craves, having won the 2020 Magarey Medal, 2021 Shearman Medal, three Barrie Robran Medals

and three Mail Medals for his hometown team. Combe paid tribute to North Adelaide for affording him the flexibility to be stationed in Crystal Brook, where he works on the family farm with younger brother Will and his father and mother. Having previously shared the journey with Will, Combe is now regularly joined by North teammate Sam McInerney, from Jamestown, to make the 400km round trip to Adelaide twice a week. Podcasts and banter between the pair pass the time away as they head to the big smoke for the main training session each Wednesday and for each match. On a Wednesday, the pair will depart Crystal Brook around 3pm before arriving home at approximately 10.30pm, having eaten takeaway pasta on the journey north. While Will has since retired from SANFL ranks, Campbell will assess his ongoing commitment at the end of the season, depending on how his Roosters might perform in September. sanfl.com.au

GRAND FINAL HERO ALMOST DIDN’T PLAY BY DION HAYMAN

Grand final folklore is littered with tales of players who carried injuries into the premiership decider. A few beat the odds to taste ultimate success but most were battered and vanquished. But one of the biggest heroes of West Adelaide’s 1983 triumph has revealed he took a hamstring strain into the match and didn’t think he would play. Tony Burgess, who was charged with the ominous task of restricting 1983 Ken Farmer Medallist Rick Davies, said he was injured in West’s second semi-final win against Norwood. “On the Wednesday night (before the grand final), I was a bit doomed,” Burgess said. “I was thinking, ‘s…, I’m going to miss this’.” Burgess had moved to Melbourne during the season and was commuting to play with the Bloods after training midweek with the Sydney Swans’ Melbournebased players. But the last Wednesday of the season found him in Sydney on business and he said he cut a dejected figure after testing out his injured leg. “I trained on the Wednesday night and I could feel it – I could feel my hamstring,” he said. Resigned to missing the premiership decider, Burgess recalled he drowned his sorrows on what was the last night of his work conference in the Harbour City. “I wasn’t in good shape,” he recalled. “On the Thursday, I flew from Sydney to Melbourne, picked up my wife and then we flew to Adelaide to go to footy training. Kerls called me over and said, ‘what, it’s no good?’ And I said, ‘no, I don’t think it is’. And he said to me, ‘go and strap it’. I wasn’t going to argue with him but I didn’t know what that was going to do.” So he trudged indoors to meet West’s head trainer John Inge and relay Kerley’s instructions. “And he said, ‘well what’s that going to do?’ And I said, ‘I’ve got no idea’. So he strapped it and I went back out and Kerls said to me, ‘Now try to tear it’. In other words, go flat out. Geoff Morris was a bit suspect as well.” Morris had also injured his hamstring against Norwood with Kerley declaring after the game, ‘he’s gone’. The star half-forward sought treatment from Adelaide horse trainer Len Smith in a desperate attempt to play. But Burgess’ injury had remained under wraps. “We both had a fitness test after training on the Thursday night and remarkably we both got through it. That was pretty fortunate. Friday night we had another fitness test. And then Kerls said to me, ‘You’ll take Davies’. “From a body point of view, I couldn’t go with him, he’s just too strong for me. But I figured if I could get the ball to the ground and run off, I’m probably going to be a chance. That was the ploy.” Davies remembers it as one of his career lowlights. “No good memories from that day,” he said. “Started poorly. The ball came down and I’ll never forget it, I went to mark it and I thought, ‘I’ve got this’, but it just went through (my hands).” 10

sanfl.com.au

The Electrifying 80s

West captain Ian Borchard and coach Neil Kerley lift the Thomas Seymour Hill premiership trophy after the 1983 grand final.

Peter Motley had won a free kick on the half-forward flank for interference in the marking contest against Mark Dreher with the game barely two minutes old. Motley’s searching kick reached the goalsquare with Davies the target. He’d marked dozens and dozens of these throughout the season and he wrapped both his enormous hands around this one, too. But within a fraction of a second, Burgess, who found himself caught slightly out of position, managed to swing his right fist backwards, making clean contact with the ball, doing just enough to knock it loose from Davies’ grip. It bobbled off several more hands before hitting the ground allowing the West defence to force a ball-up. Davies looked towards the umpire, almost in disbelief he had not completed the mark. His kick from the square would have been his 150th goal of the season and no better way to start a grand final. “If I’d marked that kick, I’d have started. But I ran to the wrong spot, it was a terrible day. Kerls had them all pumped up, he had a plan. He was a pretty good planner.” Burgess says the success of that plan relied on the efforts of all. “When you’ve got your team-mates up the ground, with how the ball came in, he didn’t get it lace out every time,” he said. “The pressure across the halfforward line and the centre line really helped the defence with the way we played. I figured if I could get the ball on the ground and go with it, that’s probably going to help us.”

Bloods coach Neil Kerley and defender Tony Burgess discuss his injured hamstring at training, then embrace after the grand final triumph.

The reality is, Burgess’ game was extraordinary. With his left hamstring tightly strapped, he managed to repeatedly get to the contest and spoil his bigger opponent. Admittedly, the swirling wind made it a difficult day for pack marking. Davies repeatedly found himself out of position or under the ball from Sturt’s long bombs into attack with the wind. His opposite number, Roger Luders, fared little better in the first term with one behind and two out on the full into the breeze. It’s easy to forget Sturt still led 5.4 to 3.6 at the 10-minute-mark of the second term before West unleashed a devastating burst of four goals in threeand-a-half minutes, two from the boot of mercurial Peter Meuret. By half-time, the Bloods had one hand on the pennant, leading 12.7 to 7.7, despite a withering four-goal term from Michael Graham, who gave Larry Watson and John Kantilaftas a torrid time. Davies had to wait until midway through the third term for his 150th goal, a Graham handball over the top in the goalsquare. Given the gravity of Sturt’s plight, it came without fanfare but it did bring the Double Blues back to within 11 points. It would be as close as they came to this mighty Bloods outfit. Burgess still marvels at Kerley’s call to strap his hamstring. “It just gave me the confidence,” he said. “Davies kicked 10 goals the week before so to get away with two … I took the strapping off after the game and that night I was black from the top of my knee to the bottom of my backside but it never went. Just remarkable, it never tore, so I got away with that one.”

TORRENS UNIVERSITY SANFL U18 WRAP

BY ZAC MILBANK

West Adelaide’s second win of the season – by 26 points at Stratarama Stadium – has put a major dent in Glenelg’s Torrens University SANFL Under-18 finals hopes. The Bloods snapped the Bays’ five-game winning streak, meaning Glenelg must beat fourth-placed Sturt in Round 18 to snare a major round spot. West managed just five behinds in the first quarter but gained control of the contest after half-time by booting 5.5 to the Tigers’ 2.2. Midfield trio Charlie Haysman (30 disposals), Bailey White (25 disposals, 11 tackles) and Sam Burbridge (24 disposals, 11 clearances) set the Bloods on their way while Glenelg was well-served by midfielder Ben Ridgway (37 disposals, 10 tackles, 10 clearances), Izayah Kean and Kallan Bevan. North Adelaide provided Woodville-West Torrens with a late-season hiccup with a six-point upset at Prospect Oval. After scores were level at half-time, the Roosters broke clear by booting 6.1 to 3.2 in the third quarter. The Eagles edged within five points 16 minutes into the last quarter thanks to Oscar Pearce’s third goal but were unable to snatch a win. North’s Jed Dignan (25 disposals), Angus Tully (22) and Luke Harvey, the brother of Roosters premiership veteran Mitch Harvey, had a major say in the win. Consistent Eagles midfielder Callum Fairall was again one of his side’s best with 24 disposals, eight clearances and eight tackles. Sturt regained fourth place with a thrilling two-point win against Central District at Wigan Oval. Still needing to avoid defeat against Glenelg in Round 18 to play in the major round, the Double Blues gained the vital premiership points thanks to Noah Prenzler’s

third goal in the 20th minute of the final term. Kobee Dabinett (21 disposals), Lachlan Boscence (23) and Cameron Kelly all produced fine performances to secure the victory. The Bulldogs’ versatile tall Jayden Matz continued his consistent campaign while Mitchell McDonald (21 disposals, 10 tackles) and Tallan Rosenzweig (four goals) provided strong support. South Adelaide shut the door on Norwood with an outstanding defensive effort earning a 40-point win at Flinders University Stadium. Setting up victory in the second term by booting 4.5 to the Redlegs’ one behind, the Panthers restricted Norwood to just 2.6 for the afternoon. Star South midfielders Phoenix Hargrave (25 disposals) and Sid Draper (21) were key drivers behind the triumph, while Dakota Sterzl was also lauded. The defensive efforts of Norwood’s Grant Catalano and Anthony Mustaca couldn’t be questioned as they laid 14 tackles each. sanfl.com.au

DOUBLE BLUES BECOME TRIPLE BLUES BY ZAC MILBANK

Sturt celebrates its third successive Novita SANFL Wheelchair League premiership. Photos: Phil Radoslovich

Sturt staged a stunning comeback to beat WoodvilleWest Torrens by five points in the Novita SANFL Wheelchair League grand final and claim a historic premiership hat-trick. The dominant Double Blues had to battle back after trailing by 12 points at quarter-time and seven at halftime as the minor premier Eagles showed why they were the in-form side leading into the title-decider at Lights Stadium. But a match-turning third quarter display swung the momentum in Sturt’s favour as it piled on 4.1 to 2.0 to earn a handy six-point lead at the final change. It proved enough of a buffer to secure a third flag in succession for the Double Blues, having also reigned supreme in 2021 and ’22 under the captaincy of Steven ‘Budgie’ Avery. An impressive seven-goal haul from experienced Sturt forward Giang Danh proved pivotal in the result, with team-mate Johnny Phanratry chipping in with two majors. The Eagles, captained by Chris Simpson, had Matt McKenzie finishing off their hard work with five goals, while vice-captain Trevor Jarrett contributed three. In the playoff for third place Central District defeated Norwood by three goals after trailing by a point at half-time. GRAND FINAL Sturt 1.2 4.3 8.4 10.5 (65) Eagles 3.2 5.4 7.4 9.6 (60) Goals – Sturt: Giang Danh 7, Johnny Phanratry 2, Hallam Chitty. Eagles: Matt McKenzie 5, Trevor Jarrett 3, Steve Edge.

Sturt’s Giang Danh scored seven goals in a matchwinning performance.

Blues skipper Steven ‘Budgie’ Avery gives the premiership trophy a kiss.

Hostplus is a top-performing super fund that puts members first. That’s why we’re proud to have been named the 2023 Fund of the Year by third-party ratings agency SuperRatings. Judged across three areas: strong performance, competitive fees, and an ongoing focus on members, we’re thrilled to receive this recognition.
