Proudly partnering the journey of footy in SA for 70 years.
STATE OF EXCITEMENT BY PETER CORNWALL
South Australian coach Jade Rawlings with former State coach Graham Cornes at Glenelg, where SANFL will tackle the VFL on Saturday, April 6.
There’s a buzz around the SANFL with the season about to be launched in a frenzy of good oldfashioned blockbusters. The 2024 program lights up with old rivals Sturt and Norwood facing off in a night clash at The Parade on Thursday before Easter Friday comes alive with regular Good Friday combatants North and Central kicking off the action at Prospect before South hosts Adelaide at Noarlunga. The Eagles will start life under new coach Sam Jacobs against West at Woodville before the spotlight turns to the Bay. Reigning premier Glenelg unfurls its 2023 premiership flag before it faces Port in the latest twist of a storied rivalry in a twilight encounter. And there will be plenty of thrills and spills between two great antagonists at Glenelg the following week as SANFL tackles the VFL with State pride on the line. Norwood premiership coach Jade Rawlings takes charge of the Croweaters again after leading them to a come-from-behind, 13-point win against Western Australia at Adelaide Oval last year.
SANFL last hosted the VFL at Adelaide Oval in 2016, with then coach Graham Cornes feeling a “sense of relief” as SA triumphed by 19 points. This year’s clash from 12.40pm on April 6 is part of a festival of footy in Adelaide, along with the AFL’s Gather Round. It will be the first of two State men’s clashes in 2024, with SA gunning for its fifth win in succession against the WAFL as it attempts to retain the Haydn Bunton Junior Cup on May 19 at Perth’s Optus Stadium. Great of Glenelg Cornes said tackling the ‘Big V’ at the Bay was “pretty special’’. “State games are important wherever they are played – it’s always a big thrill for a player to pull on a State jumper – and Glenelg Oval will be a great venue for it, providing a good, intimate atmosphere,” he said. Glenelg Oval has hosted State footy once before – in 2012, when the SANFL beat the WAFL by 14 points. It’s been all systems go in the SANFLW competition with four rounds already completed and there’s State game excitement here as well, with the SANFLW to tackle
the WAFLW at Perth’s Optus Stadium on May 4. Dual Adelaide AFLW premiership star Courtney Cramey, who captained the Croweaters in State clashes against NSW/ACT in 2016 and when SA last met WA in 2011, will coach SA in the first interstate clash since SANFLW was established in 2017. “It’s very exciting to have State footy back,” Cramey said. “It’s a great opportunity for the girls to pull that famous red jumper on. I’m super excited to see how we all go – it will be a very special occasion.” Another blockbuster in a stunning start to the SANFL season will be the traditional Anzac Day grand final rematch, with Glenelg and Sturt battling it out at the Bay in a standalone clash on Thursday, April 25. The biggest crowd-pullers in the league attracted 7285 fans to the Bay on the King’s Birthday holiday last year. “We are really excited about the marquee match-ups, particularly in the opening rounds,” SANFL head of football operations Sean Toohey said. Welcome to season 2024. sanfl.com.au

BURNING QUESTIONS BY STEVE BARRETT
1. Can Glenelg replicate the heroes of 1985-86 and go backto-back? Tiger fans have endured too much finals heartache over the generations to assume these good times will just keep rolling along. But at this stage the Bays deserve prohibitive flag favouritism. There were off-season outs, as there always are, headlined by premiership-winning trio Toby Pink (AFL), Brett Turner (work) and Luke Partington (travel). But 2019 premiership captain Chris Curran returns after a two-year absence while Will Gould, who played in that ’19 flag as a teenager, is back after four seasons with Sydney. Glenelg boasts enviable depth, having also won the reserves pennant last year, and undeniably the most lethal, multi-pronged forward line in the league.
2. Who is the best player in the SANFL? Lachie Hosie. The first player in SANFL history to have a Ken Farmer and a Jack Oatey Medal in his trophy cabinet, Hosie collected both 4

those awards, remarkably, last September. The 26-year-old has taken the reins from Liam McBean as the leader of the Tigers’ frightening forward pack. Harry Grant thoroughly deserved the 2023 Magarey Medal for his consistency and industrious ballwinning in Central District’s midfield but Hosie on his day is the more devastating matchwinner.
3. Can Sturt take the next step? Make no mistake, the Double Blues will be around the mark again. They have retained the bulk of last year’s nucleus, including every member of perhaps the most proficient, consistent back six in the competition. And there have been few better two-way midfielders over the years than skipper James Battersby and the inspirational Tom Lewis. In a big boost the Blues also secured Will Snelling’s prized signature. A 2015 premiership winner with West Adelaide as a teenager before playing 65 AFL matches, Snelling can switch between playing on the ball and attack. Then there’s Marty Mattner
Glenelg’s triumphant team celebrates premiership glory in 2023. Can the Tigers make a huge name for themselves by going back-to-back?
– arguably Sturt’s second-greatest coach after the incomparable Jack Oatey – who has led this club to two flags before. He knows exactly what it takes.
4. Will West avoid a sixth successive wooden spoon? Yes. The last time the Bloods didn’t finish bottom, Malcolm Turnbull was Australia’s Prime Minister, sandpaper-gate was the cricket world’s freshest controversy and the COVID-19 pandemic was more than a year away. Under the nurturing guidance of Adam Hartlett, West showed genuine signs of grit and development in 2023 and can reasonably expect that to finally be reflected on the ladder in ’24.
5. Will South Adelaide’s premiership drought extend past 60 years? Sadly, most definitely. Neil Kerley’s 1964 miracle-makers will remain the Panthers’ most recent success story for a while yet. Wholesale veteran experience went out the door over the off-season, replaced by unknown entities as South
2000s dynasty Thomas starred in as a player isn’t going to happen. But another semi-final appearance is not just a realistic expectation, it’s now the bare minimum for Central.
10. Can the Eagles contend again? The exit of dual premiership mentor Jade Sheedy left big shoes to fill. Fortunately his replacement has large feet. Sam Jacobs is an untried coach but he’s back in the Eagles’ nest after 208 AFL games in which his leadership and work ethic stood out. Another club legend Gavin Colville is back ‘home’ as Jacobs’ assistant. The Eagles are rarely out of contention for too long but give the new regime a couple of years.
11. Can one of the AFL reserves teams snap their SANFL drought?
Central District midfielder Harry Grant is etched into history with his plaque unveiling in Magarey Grove at Adelaide Oval in February.
shapes for a rebuild. The prospect of the Draper brothers, Arlo and Sid, running amok together is an exciting one, though.
6. Will Adam and Hamish Hartlett be the first brothers to coach against each other?
Wright led South to successive preliminary finals in 2020-21 but the past two years have been barren. The new-look, young Panthers will need to show signs of rejuvenation, if not necessarily meteoric improvement.
No. Port Adelaide patriarch Fos Williams and younger brother Glynn Williams went head-to-head three times, all in 1960. Younger brother Glynn (Sturt) won all three, convincingly, by a combined 229 points during Fos’s one forgettable year in charge of South. Fos’s sons Mark (Glenelg 1993-94) and Stephen (Port 1996-2003) coached SANFL but never against each other. Likewise brothers Johnny (West 1948-49, Glenelg 1950-52) and Don Taylor (West 1965).
8. Which team is most likely to rise from the abyss?
7. Is any coach under the pump?
Steady on. Advancing to the second week of the major round last year was just reward for sustained effort and improvement from Paul Thomas’s men. A return to the

Norwood. For a variety of reasons, the Redlegs’ 2022 premiership hangover degenerated into an unsalvageable mess, the proud club’s worst start to a SANFL season in more than a century. Nik Rokahr and Matt Nunn are big outs but look for ex-Panther Mitch O’Neill to relish roving to Harry Boyd. Treat ’23 as Norwood’s outlier.
9. Are the Bulldogs’ glory days back?
Both have headbutted the wall without breaking through for the ultimate success. Port Adelaide has contested three losing grand finals, Adelaide four unsuccessful preliminary finals. As ever, any designs on September glory will come down to the length of their AFL injury lists, their draftees’ capacity to play against men and the prowess of their top-ups.
12. Has North Adelaide dropped off the pace? On closer inspection, no. After losing the 2022 decider by one scoreboard point, the Roosters missed the ’23 finals by one ladder point. Logic suggests they are still around the mark. North, historically, has displayed a rare ability to yo-yo quickly back into contention.
13. Is the SANFL still the country’s premier state league competition? Unquestionably. Last year’s SANFL grand final crowd was almost as much as the WAFL and VFL deciders combined. On the park, the Croweaters have won the past four Haydn Bunton Junior Cups to move ahead 50-48 all-time against the Sandgropers. And against the Big V – here for Gather Round to play SANFL’s best for the first time since 2016 – SA has won four straight, last tasting defeat against the old enemy way back in ’02. sanfl.com.au

HOME, SWEET HOME BY PETER CORNWALL
He’s been there, done that in footy. Now he’s feeling right at home. Sam Jacobs’ AFL journey started in the heartland of the national league in Melbourne, playing for traditional giant Carlton, then he dominated as the Crows’ ruckman in front packed houses at Adelaide Oval, before finishing off with Greater Western Sydney far from the madding crowds. “I have been very fortunate in my journey,” he said. I wouldn’t change it at all.” Before those varied experiences across three States, Jacobs entered SANFL ranks with Woodville-West Torrens’ under-15s in 2003. More than two decades later, he’s the club’s new coach and he’s happy to be back – and excited about what’s ahead. While he’s relatively young for a league coach, at 35, Jacobs has a myriad of experiences that have shaped him and he has learned from a long list of coaches – Brett Ratten, Neil Craig, Mark Bickley, Brenton Sanderson, Scott Camporeale, Phil Walsh, Don Pyke and Leon Cameron. He started out at the Eagles under premiership mentor Ron Fuller and, after moving back from Carlton, played under Michael Godden. “I think you are looking for key things of what’s successful from all of them,” he said of the people he has been fortunate to work with, including assistant coaches and mentors he still can call on for support and advice. He’s close with rival coach, the Crows’ Godden, who he was a SANFL assistant to in 2022. “He is awesome, Godsy,” Jacobs said. “I have had a relationship right from when he coached me when I came back in 2011.” Jacobs admits it will feel odd facing up to Godden as rival coaches. “He was great for me, sitting with him in the box for that year, there are a lot of learnings I can take from that,” he said, noting Godden’s “ability to stay calm, stay present and make the right decision when needed” has been a key reason for his outstanding coaching resume.
That calmness is a hallmark of Jacobs’ character as well. “I am very level,” he said. “I don’t get too high and I don’t get too low.” That’s an outstanding trait for a coach among a long list of reasons the Eagles feel Jacobs has what it takes to build on the consistently strong performances of a club whose previous coach Jade Sheedy guided it to flags in 2020-21. After the Eagles finished seventh and eighth in the past two seasons, Jacobs’ first goal is “to play finals, I think that is always your starting point in any season”. “The club after the back-to-back premierships obviously took a hit with so many players getting drafted and it’s not something you can recover from overnight but we are really big with promoting from within and we have a lot of belief in our pathways and the work we have done there, so I am confident we will be on the right track sooner rather than later,” Jacobs said. “It’s the good thing with the SANFL, you can bounce back pretty quickly, which I am confident we can.” There’s recent evidence of that, Sheedy taking the Eagles to a flag the year after they finished seventh in 2019.
Jacobs, who gained a taste for coaching at his hometown club at Ardrossan in 2021 – “it was good for me from a player and people management side of it” – has been on the path to a league coaching gig for some time, doing what he could to educate himself for a future pathway while he was still playing. “Coaching is a passion of mine and when the opportunity came up – and best of all at the Eagles – it was something I was really keen to sink my teeth into.” With help from club legend Gavin Colville as an assistant, Jacobs said this year will be about, “a lot of learnings … to establish my knowledge around the group, a deeper level with the competition but my main aim is to establish that connection with my players”. Finally claiming his first senior grand final win last year, with Flagstaff Hill in the Southern Football League, filled a gap in his career – “It feels like I’ve ticked that one off” – Jacobs feels after a strong pre-season, with plenty of hard work and the right connections, the Eagles will be flying high, just as they were when he found his new home. sanfl.com.au

HISTOR
HISTORY MAKER BY MICHELANGELO RUCCI
No-one has walked off Adelaide Oval as a player celebrating more success as an SANFL premiership winner than Geof Motley. Nine, including six in a row from 1954-59, mark Motley as one of the greatest achievers in South Australian football. The SANFL mourned the loss of the Port Adelaide legend – a member of the national and SA football Halls of Fame – who died on 26 September 2023. He was 88. Magarey Medallist and former SANFL administrator Peter Woite, who inherited Motley’s trademark No. 17 jumper at Port Adelaide, noted of his mentor: “Geof’s record speaks for itself … you can’t get a better record in Australian football.” It reads: NINE league premierships (1954-59, 1962-63, 1965). From his league debut in 1953 to his retirement by a knee injury during the 1966 season, Motley finished each season in either a league grand final (11) or preliminary final (two). MAGAREY MEDALLIST in 1964. He was never reported in his career despite playing with a hard and physical edge. FOUR Port Adelaide best-andfairest awards (1958-59, 1963, 1965). PREMIERSHIP COACH in 1959, completing the six in a row for Port Adelaide. As player-coach for three seasons, Motley took Port to the 1959 flag and the 1960 and ’61 preliminary finals before he was sacked to allow Fos Williams’ return as non-playing coach. 10

STATE representative 28 times, including the famed 1963 team that beat Victoria at the MCG when the VFL selectors regarded Motley as SA’s best player. CAPTAIN at Port Adelaide from 1959-1966 when he closed a then club record 250-game career. Motley also coached North Adelaide for three seasons (1967-69) and served the SANFL as chairman of selectors and manager of State teams in the 1970s and ’80s. SA Football Commission chairman Rob Kerin paid tribute to Motley. “Geof will be well remembered by the South Australian football community as being a fierce competitor but one who was also incredibly fair and highly respected,” Kerin said. “There are few SANFL players who have surpassed the incredible successes of Geof Motley and it’s certainly a sad time to lose another great of our game.” Motley was deeply entrenched in the Port Adelaide Football Club soon after his birth on January 3, 1935 with his upbringing close to the club’s traditional home at Alberton Oval. He entered Port Adelaide ranks in 1950 with the junior colts and soon became – with Fos Williams – the symbol of the Magpies’ dominance of SA football in the club’s golden era during the 1950s and ’60s. State team-mate John Halbert said: “My admiration of Geof is from knowing him as an opponent, a team-mate in State football and off the field, where we never had a
harsh word among us. Geof had very good ball skills, very good kicking skills (and he) always gave his best in State games. He was a very important part of that 1963 team at the MCG – on a half-back flank with Ken Eustice on the other flank and Jeff Bray at centre halfback. That line was very powerful in our win against Victoria.” “Geof was a fearless leader,” said Magpies great John Cahill who succeeded Motley as Port skipper. “He was my captain from 1959 and he led by example. He was very courageous. And talented. Be it at half-back or centre, Geof stood tall as a captain. He led with conviction and if something needed to be done – or said – Geof was there to lead us.” Woite recalled the love and devotion Motley carried for his son Peter when he battled lifethreatening injuries after a car crash in Melbourne in 1987, suffered while playing for Carlton after starting his SANFL career at Sturt. “The way Geof took care of Peter was absolutely amazing – it tells you of the strength and character of the man who was so caring to so many,” Woite said. Neville Hayes, a great mate of Motley’s, passed away on December 6, aged 88. Affectionately known as ‘Chicken’, Hayes was an eight-time premiership player and dual bestand-fairest for Port Adelaide. The defender played 217 league matches between 1953-65 and was an inaugural inductee into the SA Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
FACING THE MUSIC BY PETER ARGENT
Central District ruck Charlotte Riggs celebrates her key goal in the Bulldogs’ thrilling grand final win against South Adelaide last season. Photo: Cory Sutton
It’s quite a juggling act. But, luckily, gregarious and outgoing Charlotte Riggs has what it takes to pull it off. Into her third season of SANFLW footy, the Central District premiership player is tackling Year 12 studies at Tyndale Christian School, where she is a school captain. The talented ruck or key defender also has commitments with the successful South Australian State under-18 program, being a member of the national AFLW academy. While the defence of the Bulldogs’ historic 2023 premiership is one priority, it’s a big year for the 17-year-old – she turns 18 in November – eligible for the AFLW draft at the end of the year. And somewhere along the line the allround talent, who has appeared in local musicals, has to fit in her family guitar and piano jam sessions. Charlotte, who played a key role in last year’s heartstopping grand final, and her Bulldogs team-mates are facing the music as defending premiers but they went into the new season with eyes wide open that “the other team are gunning for us,” realising they kicked off
again “at zero-zero … looking to build in small steps from there”. While Central’s last-gasp threepoint grand final win against South Adelaide unsurprisingly was the highlight of a burgeoning career in its early stages, there have been other fond memories of exciting wins along the way. “One that comes to mind was our win in the final minute against Sturt at Unley in 2022,” Riggs said. “It is exciting to see how well we can play. The way we played against Norwood in the preliminary final (the Bulldogs won by 40 points) was special as well.” Riggs, who also played netball for South Gawler, where her three siblings Josh, Maddy and Bella play their sport, debuted for the Bulldogs in the opening round of 2022, running into South at home and enduring a six-goal loss. She also donned SA’s colours at under-18 level for the first time in 2022, playing in ruck against Victoria at Adelaide Oval. “Wearing the State jumper was the coolest experience,” Riggs said. “I was a little lucky, because I got the opportunity as our ruck had to deal with Covid. I was so proud to put on
the jumper and saw it as a great accomplishment. And to beat Victoria on Adelaide Oval made it even better.” Being in the undefeated 2023 SA under-18 program was a privilege as well. “I learn from girls like Lauren Young, Shineah Goody and Piper Window and company, in an inclusive environment that was fantastic as well.” From a family that loves being involved in the theatre, calling herself the “comic relief” around home, Charlotte has played Patty Simcox in Grease, the Musical and been in the cast for Annie and Beauty and the Beast in local productions. “Along with my sport, I love reading books, usually with a hot chocolate, along with playing the guitar and piano and the occasional impromptu jam sessions with the family,” Riggs said. “Dad (Peter) played footy at Mount Lofty and some under-19s with Sturt. But he gave footy away to play a part in the musical Fiddler on the Roof. Mum (Rachel) was a good netballer, until her career finished when she did her ACL.” Riggs, who kicked the Bulldogs’ key first goal of the grand final with a minute left in the first half, when South was looking well on top, has had conversations with her parents and friends about the enormity of the year ahead. “I’m looking forward to the challenges and I’m pretty calm and excited,” she said. “For me, it’s about playing my role in each area. Whether it is at school, within my church community, or putting on a football jumper, it’s a teamfirst mindset.” sanfl.com.au

UNDER-18 WRAP
ZAC MILBANK | TWITTER @ZACMILBANK BY ZACBYMILBANK Sturt started its 2024 SANFL Under-18 campaign on a positive note with a hard-fought 13-point win against Central District at X Convenience Oval. After a slow start and trailing the Bulldogs by three points at the final change, the Double Blues rolled over the top of their rivals by booting 2.5 to one behind in the final quarter. Hard-running rover Connor Mills racked up 28 disposals and 10 marks, while vicecaptain Ned Atkinson kicked three goals to go with his 21 touches and nine marks. Central’s Tom Cochrane was prominent with 24 disposals and a goal, while Charlie Nicholls (14 disposals, 10 marks, two goals) and Jonah Pyman (15 disposals, four marks) contributed strongly. A strong second half catapulted Glenelg to a 40-point win against West Adelaide at Hisense Stadium. Leading the Bloods by just three points at half-time, the Bays piled on 7.8 to 1.7 to secure the premiership points. Tigers co-captain Charlie McAuliffe was rated his side’s best with 27 disposals and a goal, while Oliver Betterman (16 disposals) and Angus Clarke (25 disposals, eight marks) also stood tall. West’s Hamish Dow (21 disposals, nine marks), Gus Downs and Lucas White (22 disposals) did their best to haul their side over the line. North Adelaide trailed at every change but escaped with a five-point victory against Norwood in a historic clash at Port Pirie’s Memorial Oval. Playing for the first time in their regional recruiting zone, the Roosters booted 3.2 in the final term to 1.2 from the Redlegs. North’s Owen Kalic (23 disposals, two goals) and Sam Cumming (21 disposals, three goals) were instrumental in the win, while Hunter Press

was also recognised by his coaching staff. Norwood’s Jacob Newton (22 disposals, one goal) and Ben Hogan (17 disposals, two goals) worked hard but were unable to help the Legs make a winning start. A six-goal final-term blast earned Woodville-West Torrens an impressive 17-point win against South Adelaide at Flinders University Stadium. Facing a seven-point deficit at the final change, the Eagles booted the next six in succession to build a matchwinning 29-point advantage. Isaac Edwards (25 disposals, eight marks), Lachlan Sands (21 disposals, one goal) and Tarik Sauer (14 disposals) were the architects of the visitors’ dramatic comeback. South captain Jacob Sheean (24 disposals, nine marks), Phoenix Hargrave (29 disposals) and Blake Florance (14 disposals, 10 tackles) shone in their first outing of 2024. sanfl.com.au
