THANKS, SHEEDS BY PETER CORNWALL

For pretty much all of this century, Jade Sheedy has been an impressive, integral part of the SANFL. One of the good guys, Sheeds will leave a remarkable legacy after announcing he will step down as Woodville-West Torrens coach after this season. Sheedy, 43, has a long list of remarkable achievements as a star player and captain of Sturt and, most recently, dual premiership coach of the Eagles. The 2002 Magarey Medallist told The Advertiser’s Andrew Capel: “It was an incredibly tough decision to make but I’ve run out of puff.” Sheedy, juggling football, work and family commitments, felt he didn’t have the necessary energy to build the club’s next premiership team, with the Eagles, hard hit by player losses to the AFL and retirement over the past three years, in a transitional phase. “I don’t think I was ever going to be one of those people who was a longterm coach, I just sort of fell into it and once I do something I give it my all,” said Sheedy, who, looking to devote more time to his construction business, Sheedy Homes, felt something had to give after juggling two jobs for four years.

His love for the Eagles made it an emotional call. “It’s been tough because you win a couple of premierships with the players and then you see the kids coming through and their development and then there’s the staff and volunteers who are great people,” Sheedy said. “I’ll miss all that but it’s time to let someone else coach this great club.” Eagles president Christine Williams said the club respected Sheedy’s decision and was “incredibly grateful to Jade for all his hard work and dedication in leading our football program”. “Under his leadership the club achieved backto-back premierships, while an impressive 17 players were drafted to the AFL within the past four years, so we are incredibly proud of his accomplishments and positive impact on our club and wish him all the best for the future,” she said. “The club will always be indebted to Jade and his family and we would like to thank Jade’s family, Kelly, Ava, Will and Max, for their unwavering support of Jade’s involvement.” Sheedy was one of SANFL’s top handful of players from 2000-12, an allround package of pace, ability

to win the ball, outstanding foot and hand skills, while being the quintessential team man who worked hard and ran all day. Sheedy played 255 games and kicked 117 goals for Sturt and was joint winner of the 2002 Magarey Medal with team-mate Tim Weatherald when the Blues broke their 26-year premiership drought. He was best-and-fairest winner in 2004, ’06 and ’08-09 – only Double Blues royalty Rick Davies (7) and Paul Bagshaw (5) have won more. And he captained Sturt from 200712 – only Bagshaw and Chris Thredgold (eight years each) and John Halbert (seven) have been skipper for longer. His coaching record stacks up pretty well, too. He is the only coach in the history of the West Torrens, Woodville and Woodville-West Torrens clubs to have won dual premierships. Sheedy also has had a strong and successful involvement in State football. He won the Fos Williams Medal as SA’s best against WA in Perth in 2009 and captained the Croweaters. And, as coach, Sheedy guided SA to successive Haydn Bunton Jnr Cup wins against the WAFL in 2021 and ’22, part of his huge contribution to SA footy. sanfl.com.au

MATCH PREVIEWS BY PETER CORNWALL

CENTRAL V STURT

NORWOOD V SOUTH Footy and the race for the finals have been put into perspective with the tragic events of the past fortnight. The sudden death of young Norwood premiership star Nick Lowden on August 3 left the Redlegs and SA football circles in a state of shock. Devastated Norwood players – along with officials, volunteers and supporters – face the toughest of tasks getting back into their next game while looking to honour the memory of 23-yearold Lowden, a popular and highlyvalued team-mate. The Legs are at home to tackle South, with both sides having claimed wins last round to end three-game losing streaks. The Redlegs’ five-point win against Central lifted the reigning premiers off the bottom for the first time since they were ninth after the opening round. And the Panthers’ 22-point win against West also was crucial, considering they are now two wins ahead of the Bloods, who were banished to the bottom. 4

sanfl.com.au

Norwood will reckon it was due a close win after having suffered five defeats by two goals or less this season, including its previous two games. But it will also feel it made unnecessarily hard work of finishing off the Dogs, leading 9.10 to 7.5 in time-on of the last quarter before conceding two quick goals to make for an uncomfortable last minute. Harry Boyd, Nik Rokahr and Matt Panos showed why they had been keys to last year’s flag as they hauled their club off the bottom. Panthers coach Jarrad Wright is looking to the next generation to haul his club back up the ladder and there’s plenty of talent there. Making a more-than-promising debut against the Bloods was 18-year-old tyro Jack Delean. A pack mark that resulted in one of his two goals gave a glimpse into his future, which will surely be the AFL stage, and the young group showed they are on track for a decent future with five of the last seven goals to seal the win against West, 21-year-old Oliver Davis leading the way with 29 touches.

Will to win, perhaps even more so unwillingness to accept defeat, are features a coach loves to see in his side. Central boss Paul Thomas, this week reappointed for a further two years, until at least the end of 2025, rightly has talked about his side’s determination to keep fighting hard, even against the odds. Even when trailing by 17 points at Norwood 26 minutes into the final quarter his Bulldogs refused to concede. With two goals in two minutes they gave themselves a chance of snatching an unlikely win with a little over a minute remaining. Despite falling just short, Central, with courageous Harry Grant again in everything, edged into the top five. The only way it will be displaced from there will be with a huge fight. Sturt’s will to win is unquestioned as it keeps finding ways to get up. The Blues stormed home for a topthree cementing win at Unley against an Eagles side that threw everything at them. This was the sixth SANFL game this season a side had come back from behind at three-quarter-time to win – and Sturt has achieved the feat three times (Glenelg, Central and Port have done it once each). The Blues have come from behind at the last break against Central, West and now the Eagles to show their courage and fight and, what’s more, after trailing the Eags by eight points, they absolutely dominated the final quarter, kicking 4.5 to 1.0. And the forward-50 entries were even more emphatic – 21 to 1 –

a remarkable achievement considering forward-50 entries were level on 32 over the first three quarters. The Blues didn’t panic when they still trailed 18 minutes into the last quarter but when livewire James Mathews threaded through a superb snap, the floodgates opened, with three goals in the last eight minutes. It will be a fight to the finish here.

PORT V GLENELG Magpies coach Tyson Goldsack was right. Moving on as quickly as possible was the only way after his men suffered their first loss in five games – it just happened to be by 65 points against fierce rivals the Crows. Who knows, if a few shots on goal in the first half had been on target it might have been different, having the same number of scoring shots but trailing by the odd scoreline of 0.10 to 8.2. Moving on, there’s another big challenge for Port. The Tigers are top for good reason but the Magpies will be desperate to prove the showing against Adelaide was a ‘one-off’ and get back to the strong defensive work that had lifted them to fourth. They will also know their finals spot is not secure, with Central and North lurking just a game behind. Which means they are sure to be up for their home clash against Glenelg. They will need to be, because the Bays again were impressive in knocking off North by 30 points to look the goods for their third minor premiership in five years. Port will have to get past Glenelg’s ‘brick wall’ defence, led so well by skipper Max Proud and SANFL’s leading contested mark Toby Pink, who read the play so well and consistently make the right choice whether to defend or attack, intercepting and rebounding superbly. Port will need to make the most of its chances this week against a Tigers backline that also features Darcy Bailey, who consistently turns defence into attack with his pinpoint passing, ‘Mr 100 per cent’ Alex Martini and consistent third tall Brodie Newman.

EAGLES V NORTH The Roosters’ line-up last round against Glenelg had more of a

formidable look with guns Campbell Combe – who will play his 100th game today – Aaron Young, Sam Mayes, Harrison Wigg and Andrew Moore all out on the park together. They couldn’t get the job done against the top-placed Tigers but they will feel they have what it takes to snare a win here and, after slipping out of the five on percentage to Central, they need to. After tackling the Eagles they face the Bulldogs – in the game that could finally decide fifth place – then second side Sturt. But the Eagles, who came so close to upsetting the Double Blues, will not be looking to help out. They made a strong surge in gunning for an upset at Unley by kicking four goals in six minutes late in the second term and they led at every change. They still were leading nearing time-on in the last quarter before being shattered to lose by 15 points. The inexperience among the young talent being brought up through the club couldn’t maintain the rage against the hardened bodies of the Blues but they will be desperate to keep it going that bit longer this time.

WEST V ADELAIDE Two steps forward, one step back. That must be how it’s feeling for Bloods coach Adam Hartlett. He’s

been positive and praised his young side’s fighting qualities and work ethic as they’ve made strong strides this season but, not surprisingly, he felt the frustration of a 22-point loss to eighth-ranked South. The Bloods slipped to bottom on the ladder after their worst performance for a couple of months, their disposal efficiency and discipline slumping dramatically. Hartlett felt his side wasn’t brave enough. Well, if they need some inspiration in that regard, they only need to look at the way Neil Kerley – the club legend this game is all about – played his footy and lived his life. Attacking it, going for it full steam ahead. Adelaide, of course, is a tough test. The Crows have won four games in a row by an average margin of 56 points to cement a top-three spot, summarily dismissing Port Adelaide by 65 points last round. Elliott Himmelberg (four goals, 22 hitouts) stood tall in attack and ruck, while Sam Berry and Jackson Hately continued to dominate in the midfield. “I was really pleased with our method, systems and attitude,” Crows coach Michael Godden said. Their attitude in Murray Bridge will definitely be to get their hands on the Neil Kerley Trophy. sanfl.com.au

KERLEY CLAN HEADS TO MURRAY BRIDGE BY PETER ARGENT

One of the biggest names in SANFL history will be celebrated as West Adelaide tackles Adelaide in the Neil Kerley Memorial Match at Murray Bridge. The clash between two of the clubs the late ‘King’ of SA football was heavily involved with throughout his illustrious career is being played in the heart of the Bloods’ new country recruiting zone, which was expanded to include the River Murray Football League in November last year. A member of the Australian and South Australian Football Halls of Fame, Kerley coached West Adelaide to premierships in 1961 and 1983 while playing a vital role as the Crows’ inaugural football manager for the club’s first AFL season in 1991. Playing the match at Johnstone Park was fitting considering Kerley’s love of the Murray River region – he treasured his and wife Barb’s Walker Flat home. Proud family matriarch Barb Kerley said the match was an honour for her family. “There will be plenty of the Kerley clan converging on Murray Bridge, with people travelling from many parts of the country,” Barb said. “I had to ask the club for 20-odd tickets.” While West and Adelaide are a great fit for the Neil Kerley Memorial Match, there were a few other clubs who could have been involved. Kerley, who died in June last year, aged 88, started his league career with West and played 149 games for the Bloods between 1952-63, added 57 games for South Adelaide from 1964-66, before finishing his playing days with Glenelg, playing 6

59 games in 1967-69. He was West’s best-and-fairest four times – the award is now named the Neil Kerley Trophy – and club champion at Glenelg in 1967. He coached Westies in 1961-62, 1981-84 and 1992-93, South in 1964-66, Glenelg from 1967-76, West Torrens from 1977-80 and Central District in 1988-90. “I have had many allegiances over 60-odd years of football but my loyalty has always been to Neil,” Barb said. “I was a Central Whyalla girl, until I got involved with Neil and then barracker for North Whyalla.” There are plenty of memorable moments across Neil Kerley’s remarkable career but, asked for her favourite, Barb picked a significant win with the Bloods. “It would be the 1961 flag with West Adelaide, his first as captain-coach. I don’t reckon too many in the Press backed Neil that day,” she said. When asked about the diversity of people Neil and Barb had been in

contact with through football, she said while the sheer volume of people her husband had a connection with was amazing, it was also unsurprising because of his association with five SANFL clubs and his time helping establish the Crows. Adelaide’s first AFL coach Graham Cornes recalled: “We worked at the Crows together and he took the blame for the broken window in the Waverley coaches’ box. I’m sure he wanted to be the coach but he didn’t interfere.” That was 30 years after Kerls had announced his arrival as a coach of note. His first premiership success came in West’s 1961 ‘Turkish Bath’ grand final win against Norwood, ruckman Kerley inspirational in oppressive heat. In 1964 as captain-coach he famously took South Adelaide from bottom to top in his first season in charge. He then resurrected Glenelg’s fortunes, taking it from a wooden

spooner into five grand finals in his 10 seasons as coach, winning the 1973 premiership with one of the greatest teams in SA footy history. Cornes, who kicked the goal that put the Tigers ahead late in the ’73 grand final thriller, called Kerley the ultimate man’s man and a “father figure” to him. “Kerls gave me my first opportunity in (it seemed like) everything,” Cornes said. “He selected me in my first game for Glenelg and I played my first State game under him. When I came back from North Melbourne, he selected me in the State side straight away. “He was a really important male figure in my life and that certainly extends beyond football. We also worked together afterwards and his words of wisdom still stick with me today. “Playing alongside Neil, he was a great on-field leader. He was a larger-than-life character who squeezed every drop out of it. Kerls was always a friend and a mentor. I would support a push to have a statue of him at Adelaide Oval.” Kerley returned to West Adelaide as coach in 1981 and within two years had lifted the Bloods to their first premiership since he was captaincoach in 1961.

While Kerley gave all the clubs he coached everything he had, he loved nothing more than representing his State – and nothing was better than beating the Vics. He proudly played for South Australia 32 times, including in the Croweaters’ famous win over Victoria at the MCG in 1963, SA’s first victory there since 1926. Kerley earned All-Australian selection after the Brisbane Carnival of 1961 and also spent 10 seasons as State coach over a

30-year period. His love for SA even saw him strongly involved in the State’s America’s Cup yachting challenge in the mid 1980s. After playing 297 club and State games, Kerley coached 628 SANFL games, with a 55 per cent winning ratio. And he continued his involvement in the game through newspaper, television and radio work well beyond that time. No wonder family, friends and fans are heading to Murray Bridge to pay tribute. sanfl.com.au

THOMAS FAMILY RIGHT AT HOME BY ROBERT LAIDLAW

A ripper family shot with (top) Paul Thomas, Beau, Jamie and Abbie, (middle) Aisha and (front) Paul’s sons Austin, Archer and Cohen.

Say the names Gowans, Cochrane, Platten and Schiller and you instantly think of famous Central District Football Club brothers. Then there are Bulldogs father-son combinations of Saywell, Hurn, Thomas and Wilson. And further family connections are being established at Elizabeth with women’s football and fatherdaughters, including Shelby Smith and her dad Greg, and Aisha Thomas and Jamie. How many former Central players can claim three offspring to have played league football at the club? One. Congratulations Jamie Thomas. First there was current coach Paul Thomas, then Aisha, now Beau, who made his league debut against South Adelaide at Elizabeth three weeks ago. “It’s the same for all my kids, I just get so excited for them all,” Jamie said of Beau’s debut. “Our family has been closely connected with Central District all their lives, with first Paul, then Aisha and now Beau all coming through the club’s development squads and juniors. I always expected them to play league footy and I have another daughter, Abbie, who I’m certain will play league with 8

Central in the next year or two. As for Beau, he is a beautiful kid and passionate about the club. Paul was a dominant player and it’s great he gets to coach his younger brother.” Jamie was 19 when he made his debut with the Bulldogs in Round 1 1982 against West Adelaide, the same year twins Paul and Adam – his second and third children – were born. In 2001 Paul made his

league debut for Central against South Adelaide at Elizabeth on July 21, as an exciting 19-year-old. And a fortnight ago, 19-year-old Beau made his debut against the Panthers at Elizabeth, on July 22. “Beau had been close to making the league team a few weeks earlier, when he was an emergency,” Paul Thomas said. “Then when Marcus Barreau

struggled through his (fitness) test on the Friday before the game, we knew Beau would be playing. “I played my first game against South at Elizabeth, so I checked my old journals and found the day was just one day different from Beau’s debut – very serendipitous. When he kicked that goal with his first touch and the boys got around him, it was a great moment and gave him confidence. I was pleased for him.” Beau did something on debut his illustrious brother and father never did, when he booted that goal with his first kick in league ranks. It took until his fourth season in 1985 for backman Jamie to kick his first league goal, while Paul, although managing two majors in 2001, was goal-less in his first game. “My first game I got an early kick on the grandstand wing and I remember the applause,” Paul said. “I had a job to do and I stuck to it, which is what Beau did, too. After that goal, which was the third of the game, my main thoughts were how we as a team could progress the game to the next score. It was after the game when we had a family photo I reflected more on it. He was picked on his ability and regardless that he is my brother, I was proud and pleased for him, which was amplified because he is my brother.” After seeing his sister Aisha make her league debut in the Bulldogs’ inaugural season in women’s football in 2019, and having fond

memories of watching Paul’s games as a passionate supporter, Beau’s dream was to emulate his siblings. At 6ft, 3in (191cm), Beau is five inches taller than Paul and is a different type of player, as a tall forward option and back-up ruckman. But one family trait Beau has embraced is his desire to be hard at the ball and do everything for the team. “It was Paul’s trademark, so I just want to make sure I give everything to the team and play hard,” Beau said. “As for that first kick, it settled the nerves and helped me realise I was playing league footy. The way everyone got around me, it made me feel at home. “Playing league footy has been my dream for many years. And to play under Paul was awesome. After the game Paul said, ‘good job, you did well. I hope you had fun’. My job was to make sure my opponent did not do too much damage with intercept marks and setting up play down field, which I thought I did okay with.” Jamie Thomas played 153 games from 1982-89 to lay the foundation for the family dynasty. Then Paul had a wonderful career, with 269 games with the Bulldogs (and eight AFL games with Essendon), six premierships, including four as captain, a Magarey Medal, four Bob Quinn Medals and skipper of the State team. Aisha has played 11 games with Central’s women’s

team, including four this season but she missed out on the grand final success. Beau’s twin sister Abbie is a potential future star with the Bulldogs. In another twist, Paul is also a twin, although his brother Adam did not pursue a footy career. But he does help the Bulldogs’ coach out with stats. The oldest of Jamie’s children Kelly was born “too early” to have a career in football but she held her own in the backyard kicking contests when younger. “Although our club is comparatively young, with multiple generations of players we keep significantly adding to our family traditions,” Paul Thomas said. “We have had multiple siblings, father-sons, and now father-daughters, highlighted by Greg Smith and Shelby – both captains at the club. “I would love my sons Austin, Archer and Cohen to eventually play league footy here but I think the Cochranes might beat us to the punch to be the first three-generation family. The club is coming of age through their family connections, which is a good thing to celebrate.” In the 1970s, brothers Richard and Bill Cochrane played league football at the Ponderosa. Then in the 2000s, Richard’s sons Richie and Stuart were Central premiership players. Now two of Stuart’s sons, Tom and Doug – who made the State schoolboys team – are in the Bulldogs’ junior program. sanfl.com.au

SANFL TO HONOUR NORWOOD’S NICK LOWDEN The SANFL and all clubs in the Hostplus SANFL League will pay tribute to Norwood premiership player Nicholas Lowden across matches this weekend. A minute’s silence will be observed before the start of each league match in Round 16 in honour of Nick, who passed away suddenly last week, aged 23. Players and umpires will also wear black armbands across all SANFL grades, including reserves and Torrens University Under-16 and Under-18 matches, to pay their respects. Norwood will pay special tribute to Nick before the minute’s silence at its home match against South Adelaide. Nick played 22 league and nine reserves games for Norwood in 2022 and ’23, including all four finals matches last year. The talented young midfielder was recruited by the club from Casey Demons in the VFL in late 2021. SANFL chief executive officer Darren Chandler said Nick’s passing had impacted deeply on the South Australian football community and that it was appropriate all 10 clubs in the men’s State League and supporters had the opportunity to pay their respects this weekend. “Nick’s tragic and unexpected death has undoubtedly had an effect on everyone involved in football and collectively all clubs wished to remember him and honour his outstanding achievements during his time in our State League,” Mr Chandler said. “This will also provide a moment together to reflect on how precious

life is and as a football community how we can get around each other for support. “We continue to offer our sincere condolences to Nick’s family and friends, while our hearts go out to the players, coaches and staff of Norwood Football Club and its broader community at the toughest of times.” Norwood chief executive officer James Fantasia said: “We are humbled by the gesture and recognition of Nick’s passing by the League and all clubs. I think it demonstrates how supportive and caring our football community is. This is incredibly comforting for our

club, players, coaches, staff and certainly the Lowden family.” If you or anyone close to you needs assistance, there is emergency help available: Lifeline | 13 11 14 or lifeline.org.au Crisis support and suicide prevention services for people experiencing emotional distress Beyond Blue | 1300 22 4636 Call or chat online for counselling or to talk to someone who understands what you’re going through Headspace | 1800 650 890 Mental health support for young people. TORRENS UNIVERSITY SANFL U18 WRAP

BY ZAC MILBANK

A fast start enabled Woodville-West Torrens to maintain its place at the top of the Torrens University SANFL Under-18 ladder with a hard-fought nine-point win against Sturt at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval. Slamming on the first three goals of the game en route to earning a 23-point lead at the first change, the Eagles were able to withstand the Double Blues’ third-term challenge which saw their advantage cut to five points. Eagles midfielders Callum Fairall (36 disposals) and Brody Mair (27 disposals, two goals) were key drivers in the victory. Sturt’s Loch Rawlinson kicked two classy checkside goals to go with his 23 disposals, while Brodie Maloney and Cameron Kelly were also high among the Blues’ best. Glenelg continued its finals charge when it claimed its fifth successive win with a 43-point victory against North at Stratarama Stadium. The Tigers not only doubled the Roosters’ inside-50 count (60-30) but also tallied 35 more marks while using the ball well by foot. Bays tyros Anders McShane (25 disposals) and Charlie McAuliffe (21) found plenty of the ball while Ben Dewhirst impressed in the air with 12 marks to go with 21 possessions. North’s Hunter Press (21 disposals) and Darcy Kelly did their best to stem the tide, while late inclusion Kane McAuliffe battled hard through the midfield to collect 28 disposals, seven clearances and a goal. Central District overcame a sluggish start to claim a vital 28-point victory against Norwood at X Convenience Oval. Trailing by 13 points at half-time, the Bulldogs piled on 5.2 to the Redlegs’ solitary behind in the third quarter. Central ruck Jayden Matz was again influential with

11 disposals and 39 hit-outs as Brody Wilton and Riley McDonald (25 disposals) lent valuable support. The Redlegs’ Jack Michalanney, brother of Crow Max Michalanney, was rated his team’s strongest performer, while Jacob Newton (30 disposals) drew praise from the coaching staff. Exciting Northern Territory talent Clay Shadforth steered South Adelaide to a comfortable 29-point win against West Adelaide at Hisense Stadium. Shadforth, from Palmerston Magpies, booted a gamebreaking five goals from his 15 disposals as the Panthers held firm in the top four. Captain Nicholas Schroder (16 disposals, eight marks) and midfielder Tom Wheaton (30 disposals) also made their presence felt. West edged within three points late in the third term but the efforts of Riley Hill (19 disposals), Max McKenzie (four goals) and Sam Burbridge (23 disposals) weren’t enough to reel the visitors in. sanfl.com.au

The Electrifying 80s

HISTORY REPEATS

There would be no better indication of what the electrifying ’80s would deliver than its opening gambit. The new decade pitted reigning premier Port Adelaide against the would-be successor to its throne, Central District. The Bulldogs had clinched their first minor premiership just six months earlier, only to wilt in two excruciating finals defeats. The crowd of 15,696 was then a record for Elizabeth Oval. Port’s side was laden with talent and had already thumped Melbourne in a trial at Alberton Oval by 59 points, prompting coach John Cahill to declare, “We’re fitter and stronger than last year”. The Magpies dominated the first half before the Bulldogs partied like it was 1979, turning the game on its ear with an avalanche of seven goals to one. The last of those came from the boot of 21-year-old goalsneak Kym Lehmann, playing just his 15th game. Lehmann had already scored one goal when he gathered the ball in the right forward pocket at the northern end with designs on his second. Before he could get his kick away, the siren sounded but the raucous crowd prevented umpire Peter Mead from hearing it and the goal stood. Port officials claimed umpire Trevor Thomas acknowledged the siren before Mead heard it but he had not advised his partner in white. Steeled by the apparent injustice, Port was roused for one final assault and quickly began making inroads on its deficit of 24 points. The nervous Bulldogs missed six chances to put the match to bed with six behinds. With the scores level and only seconds to play, veteran Central defender Bill Cochrane ran back towards goal

and juggled a mark between the goal and behind post. Again, it was Mead in the thick of things. Magpies players believed they heard him call “play on” but he paid the mark after Cochrane’s momentum carried him beyond the goal-line. Cleverly, Cochrane quickly kicked the ball back into play, denying Mead any more time to assess the situation. Some 43 years later, Cochrane remains adamant Mead was right. “There was a little bobble but it was before the line and as soon as I grabbed the ball, I went back across the line, so I have no doubt it was a mark,” he insisted. “I do remember distinctly it was a choice. There was no value in touching it, I either had to mark it or it was going to be a score. We’d had plenty of times where we’d been in winning positions and lost and you just get to a point where you do whatever you have to do to make sure you don’t lose.” Cochrane remembered his heroics drew no admiration from the Port players close by. “They were all going off giving me a hard time.” And he insists Lehmann’s controversial major just before three-quarter-time was also the right call. “I always thought he kicked it just before (the siren

20

sounded) but who hears the siren at what stage?” Port filed a complaint with the SANFL after scores were locked with the unusual scoreline of 9.18 apiece. Cahill said: “Lehmann’s goal was scored after the siren – not just a second but four or five seconds after it sounded.” Bizarrely, Cochrane had also been involved in a controversial moment 12 months earlier when Central drew with West Torrens on opening day at Football Park. Peter Phillipou took a free kick from the goalsquare which even some of his team-mates agreed missed by two metres. That was also the view of Cochrane, who grabbed the ball and kicked out, only for umpire Rick Charlesworth to intervene after consultation with the goal umpire to advise full points had been registered. “I honestly thought it was a point but everybody was screaming so I just grabbed the ball and played on to make people not think about changing the decision,” Cochrane said. Incredibly, there would be a third straight opening round draw in 1981 between Norwood and Sturt. As for 1980, only two more teams would take points off Port as it bulldozed to back-to-back premierships.
