AT FULL STRETCH BY PETER ARGENT

It’s been a big year for Glenelg’s Billy Stretch – and it’s looking like it might get bigger and better. Stretch and long-term partner Rubi Lienert this year became engaged – and in December they will be married. Billy is in his fourth year of a carpentry apprenticeship and the couple are moving house. Enjoying his hectic lifestyle, Stretch has another driving force – the aim to be part of premiership success at the Bay. He is loving the successful season Glenelg has been putting together under new coach Darren Reeves. “You love Reeva’s (Reeves) work ethic and passion – he gives our playing group the best opportunity to perform at our best,” Stretch said. “His professionalism and desire to get the best out of the players is outstanding. Darren’s people skills and communication across the entire playing group are other strengths.” Stretch played 11 games in his debut season with Glenelg as an Immanuel College student in 2014, following in his father Steven’s footsteps and goaling with his first kick in SANFL league footy. Billy, remarkably, also bagged a goal with his first kick in AFL footy with Melbourne.

Steven made his senior footy debut for West Torrens in 1982, playing 60 games in the Eagles’ blue and gold before joining Melbourne in 1986. A Demons best-and-fairest and regular SA State-of-Origin representative, the speedy, highflying wingman played 164 games with Melbourne, including the 1988 grand final, and added 25 with Fitzroy. Billy, after being part of SA’s under18 success at national level in 2014, alongside Alex Neal-Bullen, Caleb Daniel, Sam Durdin and Jack Hayes, was snared by the Dees as a fatherson selection. “Brenton Phillips got that group to play a selfless teamfirst brand of football,” Stretch said of the under-18 championship win. “We certainly went under the radar that year but there were some very talented players in our side.” Between 2015-19 Stretch played 47 games with Melbourne before being delisted. “It was a tough transition in the first six months,” Stretch said. “You’re a way behind your peers from a career perspective. I came back to Glenelg and played under Mark Stone initially in 2020. It was good to have some SANFL footy to focus on, especially in that first period after I was delisted.”

Ultra-consistent and finding his niche on a wing in the current Glenelg outfit, Stretch reached his 50 SANFL league game milestone this year, nine years after his Bays debut. He received glowing praise from his coach. “Billy is the highest-quality person and character,” Reeves said. “He is the ultimate professional in his preparation and the way he attacks his football. Billy is incredibly consistent in his performance, playing his role for the team week after week. On top of that, he is hugely respected among his peers. He is a player you love coaching.” Along with premiership success this year, Stretch, 26, said he would like to play SANFL for a couple of more years, with the 100-game milestone an achievement he would like to tick off. Eventually he’d love to play some country football, as Rubi is an accomplished netballer who played at Tanunda. Her father Kym Lienert played SANFL league football with Central District in the late 1970s. Billy has received plenty of loyal support from Dad, now a converted Bays man, and Mum, Leona, across his entire footy journey. They are regular attendees at Billy’s games. sanfl.com.au

MATCH PREVIEWS BY PETER CORNWALL

GLENELG V WEST For one side it was a different feeling. For the other, an awful moment of deja vu. The final siren often evokes a huge release of emotion – for players, coaches and supporters. For Westies against Central, the Bloods again had that sinking feeling of a game that had just slipped through their grasp, so near, yet so far, for the seventh time this year being edged out by less than 20 points – and after leading at the start of time-on in the final quarter, with memories still fresh of a six-point loss the previous week. For the other, it was the weird sensation of not actually winning. After 11 victories in a row, the Bays players and fans tasted defeat for the first time in 105 days, overpowered by the Crows by 20 points. Some of those fans might be saying it’s the loss they had to have as they are still on top of the table, coach Darren Reeves saying “there are some great learnings out of this”. The Bloods, though, will be getting heartily sick of hearing how close they are getting, of how much they have improved, of how highly 4

competitive they now are, after being far from it for much of the past few years. They are deserving of credit for their huge improvement and it was refreshing to hear Bulldogs boss Paul Thomas praising rival coach Adam Hartlett for what he has achieved in his first year in charge at Westies, saying he “has been amazing with his side this season”. But it’s time for the Bloods to take the next step. To own the final moments of a close clash. To make a statement of where they are heading. Of course, it’s sometimes easier said than done. Against the Bays at the Bay after they have received a wake-up call is about as big a test as you can get. But it’s time to aim high.

NORTH V NORWOOD When the season kicked off there would have been no chance you could have tipped this Round 14 clash would be between the fifthranked and bottom-placed sides on the ladder, with just nine wins for the year between them. But that’s something we love about sport. And this SANFL season. Expect the unexpected. But neither the

Roosters nor the Redlegs, the combatants in one of the greatest grand finals of all last season, would have been loving it last week as they came up short in games that were crucial as they fought to play finals. It might just about have been the last shot for reigning premier Norwood, beaten by 11 points against the Eagles and three wins out of the five with five games to go. North is still right in the race in fifth place but the Roosters would have been disappointed to be beaten by 38 points by Port, which was level with them on wins before the clash. We hear it all the time but it’s about opportunities and Norwood and North had their chances. The Roosters won the clearances, had more possessions, more inside 50s and scoring shots than Port but when you kick 6.17 your hopes of winning usually aren’t great. The Redlegs also had more inside-50s than the Eagles but couldn’t nail a goal when it counted in a final quarter they could have owned. Both these teams are better than their position on the ladder suggests. So what can we expect today?

You can’t keep a good man down as Eagles star James Rowe pops up to boot the matchwinner against Norwood – and celebrates with typical gusto. Photo: Scott Starkey

CENTRAL V SOUTH The Bulldogs will feel even better about being home, sweet home after chalking up their first away win this season. The Bulldogs kept themselves right in the finals race with a courageous last-gasp win against West in Richmond, kicking the last two goals of a thriller to seal the deal. South, on the other hand, must have felt hopes of finals action were slipping away as its crucial clash with Sturt at Unley was pretty much over as a contest in the second quarter. But, after some awful turnovers handed the momentum to the Blues early, the Panthers at least fought it out, kicking the last five goals of the game in a 34-point loss. And it depends which way you look at it but, if you’re looking for positives, South is just two games out of the five and its next three games are against teams out of the five. So there’s no time for excuses, which means there will be plenty of heat in another ‘must-win’ game for these sides. The Dogs’ win against West, sealed by four-goal star Ethan East’s stunning 60m bomb, edged them within 0.6 per cent of fifthplaced North. Apart from their late revival, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for South at Unley, 17-yearold Sid Draper showing what a huge talent he is in just his second league

game, regularly in the right place at the right time to earn 21 touches and six clearances. Keegan Brooksby, as usual, impacted in ruck while you couldn’t have asked much more of midfielder Kobe Mutch.

PORT V STURT Port is taking on the menacing look of Port of old. Out of finals action since the 2019 premiership decider, the Magpies have won three in a row – the best SANFL winning run right now – and seven of their past 10 games, to move a game clear in fourth spot. First-year coach Tyson Goldsack is making his mark and after his men disposed of North by 38 points, Roosters coach Jacob Surjan declared, “it was a bit oldschool Port. They were tougher and hard consistently and full credit has to go to them”. Sturt, though, will be a formidable foe. The Blues seemingly were being forgotten as Glenelg and the Crows looked the goods over the previous month, but they made a statement by kicking 11 goals clear of South in a convincing win that sees them equal top with an imposing 11-2 record. It was clear how much the absence of injured in-and-under midfielder Tom Lewis had been as he racked up 13 kicks, 18 handballs, six clearances and six tackles. Lachlan Burrows (five goals) and Josh Hone (four) ignited

Sturt’s attack, while outstanding key defender Connor McFadyen and speedster Marty Frederick have added plenty to the Blues this year. Coach Marty Mattner said, “with Glenelg losing to the Crows, it gives us a chance for top spot, which is nice and gives us something to strive for. Our next goal is to get to that 13-win mark to finish top three and keep that gap ahead of Port, who are coming hard”. They sure are. It won’t be easy for the Blues, especially at Alberton. Goldsack has the Magpies playing strong, connected footy, the AFL and SANFL players fitting together well and boosted last week by the return from a long-term calf injury of inspirational skipper Cameron Sutcliffe, who earned 28 touches in just his second game for the season.

EAGLES V ADELAIDE Woodville-West Torrens coach Jade Sheedy isn’t talking about finals and Crows boss Mick Godden hasn’t talked premierships. But surely it’s on their minds? The Eagles are a game out of the five in seventh spot, with a better percentage than the sides above them – North and Central – and claimed an important, fighting win against Norwood last week to stay right in the picture. Sheedy is looking to build a future – and there’s little doubt the dual premiership coach is the man to do it. But Eagles fans who saw the pride and passion James Rowe displayed after he kicked the sealing goal against the Redlegs know this side is still right in the hunt this year. Of course there’s no doubt their opponents today are right in it. Another Eagles premiership coach, Mick Godden, is in charge of another side with serious claims to the flag, the Crows ending Glenelg’s 11-game unbeaten run with an impressive 20-point success. Ruckman Kieran Strachan continually sets Adelaide on its way and midfield bull Harry Schoenberg is having such a stunning season he could be the Crows’ first Magarey Medallist. And Matt Crouch just keeps getting the ball. For those who believe the Eagles can fly high this year, this game looms as an acid test. sanfl.com.au

The Eagles premiership side of 1993 and coach Bruce Winter back at Woodville for their reunion. How many players can you recognise 30 years later?

EAGLES HISTORY-MAKERS BY PETER ARGENT

From finals failures in the first two years to 1993 premiers, WoodvilleWest Torrens celebrated the 30-year anniversary of the amalgamated club’s inaugural flag last Saturday in a memorable reunion at the club. Fifteen of the 20 Eagles from the ’93 grand final were at Oval Avenue for the celebrations, along with coach Bruce Winter. Sadly, two members of the flag-winning side, Jamie Tape and Laurence Schache, are no longer with us. The Eagles were the amalgamation of the Woodville Warriors and West Torrens Eagles, coming together in 1991, initially coached by Neil Balme. Bruce Winter, Balme’s assistant for the opening two seasons and a perennial grand finalist across his career as player and coach, took up the head role in 1993. Winter’s career started with Sturt in 1971, only because he “lived a couple of hundred metres the wrong side of Kensington Road, at Wattle Park”. He said: “I jokingly suggested we’d move house so I could play at The Parade but the Sturt officials told me there was a three-year residential qualification. As a Norwood High School kid, I always wanted to play for the Redlegs. I started with Sturt as an on-baller in 1971, played in the 1974 premiership (the first grand final at Football Park), missed the famous ’76 win through injury and played in the 1978 grand final we lost to Norwood.” That ’78 decider was Winter’s final game in a Double Blues jumper, after 175 games. He achieved his childhood dream, playing the first 6

of 178 games for Norwood in 1979. His time at The Parade included the 1980 grand final loss to Port, along with the ’82 and ’84 triumphs, before he started coaching. “I coached Norwood to a reserves grand final loss in 1989, which I remember because a young Matthew Robran was in the side … and we lost by plenty,” Winter said. “There were a couple of grand finals with the Eagles reserves in ’91 and ’92 for a win and a loss. I spoke at the start of the ’93 season, when taking over the senior role, about the group being more defensively accountable. While we had played in the 1991 and ’92 finals series, we were bundled out pretty promptly.” In 1993 the Eagles’ emphasis on that defensive aspect was a key to their success. “We played Port Adelaide in the second semi-final and kept them to four goals (14.20 to 4.6) and Norwood just managed seven goals in the grand final,” said Winter, recalling “this win was an

important one for the supporters and volunteers”. “With both the foundation clubs being starved of success, it was an important win to prove the decision for the clubs to come together was the right one.” Winter continued as Eagles coach until 1997, before spending many years in SA’s elite underage programs, firstly assisting Russell Ebert and then having a long tenure as State under-16 coach. In his final year in the role Winter mentored SA’s under-16 girls in their first national championships, before finding other aspects of life to try. He didn’t have too many stressful issues in the 1993 decider, the Eagles having 12 shots to four in the first quarter to lead his old club Norwood by 25 points (5.7 to 2.2) and dominating all day in an emphatic 73-point win. The man who triumphantly lifted the Thomas Seymour Hill Cup at Football Park was Peter Schwarz, who had played

183 games for Woodville before the amalgamation and was the first captain of the tri-coloured green, gold and blue club. He played 85 more games for the Eagles between 1991-94, being awarded WoodvilleWest Torrens life membership in this flag-winning year. “There is always a hard-luck story in big games – in ’93 it was Stuart Totham,” Schwarz said. “We had a very settled back six for the entire year, who worked really well together. Our defensive pressure all over the ground was great. Games in the era were more free-flowing and were high scoring – our ability to move the ball quickly was another strength. “Wayne Weidemann was outstanding on the day, as well as Steven Sziller. It was a case of ‘all played well’ and the goals were shared around as well. We started really well, Andrew Taylor kicking a goal in the opening minute. Probably when (half-back) Jamie Tape pushed forward and kicked a goal in the second term, I thought we were a pretty good chance from that point. We absorbed Norwood’s pressure in the third. By half way through the final quarter when the lead was unassailable, you really could enjoy it. Initially there is a component of relief … when the siren went. “On reflection, the premiership means so much to the members and supporters, and the entire community. The players who played on that October Saturday understand the importance of being involved in our first flag and no-one can ever take that honour away from them.” From Lobethal Tigers in the Adelaide

Hills, Steven Sziller debuted with the Eagles in 1992 and played 72 games for the club. But one stands out above all the others, when he won the Jack Oatey Medal for beston-ground in the 1993 grand final. Sziller, just 20 at the time, recalled the flag as “special” as he was an Eagle from way back. “Dad (Rudy) played with West Torrens but unfortunately he did a knee early on. Jason, who is 18 months older than me, and I were always West Torrens fans. We were in the Sturt zone but got to the Eagles under the father-son rule. “When you have barracked for the club your entire life, to win that grand final is one of the outstanding highlights I’ve had across my career. It was a win

that brought a lot of joy to a lot of people.” Steven Sziller in 1995 moved east, playing 118 games with St Kilda between 1995-2000, before two seasons and a further 38 senior games at Richmond. Eagles CEO Luke Powell at the reunion made a special presentation to the late Jamie Tape’s parents, Peter and Cathy, a replica of Jamie’s No. 5 jumper worn on the day. “We wanted to reiterate how important Jamie was as a member of our football club and thought this was a suitable way of showing it,” Powell said “The players really appreciated seeing Peter and Cathy at the 30-year event. It was an honour to present the jumper. But also very emotive.”

The unbeaten SA under-18 girls team after overcoming Queensland in AFL National Championships. Photos: Peter Argent

WINNING RUN BY ZAC MILBANK

SA’s under-18 girls were unbeaten in their AFL national championship campaign for the second successive year after toppling Queensland by 20 points in Game 3 last weekend at Adelaide Oval. Defeating Western Australia (35 points) and Victoria Metro (58 points) in their opening two matches, the Croweaters backed up their flawless run last year by bolting out to a match-winning 33-point lead by three-quartertime against the Maroons. Defenders Jemma WhittingtonCharity (19 disposals) and Lily Whitcombe were highly-rated by the coaches for their efforts in thwarting the Queenslanders, who came home hard with four goals in the final quarter. India Rasheed (20 disposals and nine tackles) was as creative as ever before putting the finishing touches on the performance with a goal on the final siren, snapped from 20m. She had been SA’s best in the impressive win against Vic Metro in Melbourne. Hardly surprisingly Croweaters captain Piper Window again was among SA’s best players, the championship success continuing a stunning year in which she won the

HISTOR

Gordon Schwartz wrote a regular column for Football Budget.

SCRAPBOOKS BY NEIL J SMITH

Compiling footy scrapbooks with photos and newspaper clippings may have gone out of fashion in the digital age but, for many years, putting these books together was a labour of love for many families. The SANFL History Centre has a significant collection of precious scrapbooks. There are 193 volumes in the catalogue, with some still held by the families who compiled them. Trevor Jaques at the History Centre has taken on the task of cataloguing the collection. “The books are precious records of times gone by, although they provide some significant challenges. The clippings from newspapers are increasingly fragile, many suffering from the sticky tape that was applied to adhere them to the pages. This represents a big challenge in terms of preservation and storage.” Preserving the scrapbooks for the future will rely heavily on having them scanned and digitised. This enormous task has been started but it looms as a substantial body of work. The oldest scrapbook has newspaper clippings from 1914. The earliest “family” collection has memories of the Hank brothers – Bob, Bill and Ray – from 1950. With the books relying heavily on newspaper clippings, they often lack detail of the dates, which inhibits their use for historical research. The collection includes two volumes of Peter Darley’s South Adelaide career – they were compiled by his mother and Peter knew nothing about them at the time. Another remarkable book is handwritten in a WEA Exercise Book by “RW Waters of Albert Park”. It includes details of many of the games through the season, including the interstate game at Adelaide Oval in July 1963. This was the return game from the victory at the MCG the previous month and the game in which John Peck famously ‘decked’ Brian Sawley. Waters recorded the weather as, “Cold, after rain – 55.2 degrees”. He also described the turf as, “Atrocious, slushy”. As for all the games he recorded, it includes a diagram of team positions and a summary of the game. “A thrilling match concluded a wonderful year of Interstate Football.” Gordon Schwartz was a prolific sportswriter, mainly for The Advertiser. He wrote about football, tennis, cricket, golf, swimming, even wrestling. He kept all his articles in a series of scrapbooks that have been donated to the 10

SANFL History Centre. Apparently, his mother started the scrapbooks but throughout his career Gordon took the responsibility to cut out each published article and glue it in the books. His son David remembers the smell of the glue! Gavin Pearce is working at the SANFL History Centre indexing the football articles, arranging them by their headlines and adding more information from the text of the copy. Gavin said: “Reading the articles provides an insight to the times when they were written. Contemporaneous records like these are very valuable sources.” Gordon, who died in 2021, aged 98, played tennis for SA, football for Norwood and West Torrens and was a handy golfer and cricketer. He worked for The Advertiser from 1954-87 and also covered football for radio 5AD for 15 years. With the advent of television he joined Channel 7’s World of Sport team and continued there for 17 years. He later wrote reflective articles for the Football Budget and in 1999 wrote a book Magic Sporting Moments. In 2002 he became an inaugural inductee into the South Australian Football Hall of Fame. The SANFL History Centre is pleased to have such a comprehensive journalistic history of our State’s sporting life and to have this access to Schwartz’s writing, through his remarkable 23 scrapbooks.

ALL-OUT ATTACK BY DION HAYMAN

Whether it was a full moon, an alignment of planets or some other bizarre astronomical occurrence has never been investigated. But the phenomenal goal glut that occurred in the 14th series of 1984 had to be seen to be believed. At Unley, Stephen Copping kicked his first bag of 10 goals, returning 11.6 from full forward as Glenelg triumphed 27.15 (177) to 21.14 (140). Yet the goal umpires at Oxford Terrace had a day off compared with what was going on at West Lakes. On paper, it appeared an unglamorous match-up between fourth-placed South Adelaide (8-5) and eighth-ranked Woodville (3-10). And in many ways, so it proved. Barely 2500 fans were tempted to attend. Yet those who did won’t forget the astonishing end-to-end football they witnessed that exemplified the free-flowing, highscoring ways of footy in the ’80s. The opening to the game was fairly uneventful – South led 4.1 to 2.2 midway through the first quarter. By midway through the second quarter, Woodville coach Malcolm Blight, who didn’t play in the game, knew he had a problem with South on top 15.6 to 2.2. The Panthers had 20 goals on the

board by half-time, with their fleet of runners and little men slicing the Warriors to shreds. “Everything for South Adelaide is going right, and at the moment I reckon they could walk on water,” cried Ian Day. Mark Naley oozed class, followers David Fairclough and Darryl Hewitt were in everything, Phil Would scored goals for fun and 19-yearold Craig Dewhirst drove South forward relentlessly in his maiden season. John Schneebichler ran between centre half-forward and centre half-back directing play like a traffic cop, while the bearded Darren Harris just did Darren Harris things. He had barely played a dozen games and was only 18 but prowled the forward line, possessing the chassis of a wellseasoned player and the menace of a dual Ken Farmer Medallist. Harris looked a million bucks every time he went near it and capped his seven-goal outing with a giant hanger on the back of a hapless Scott Blacksell. Perhaps the most remarkable thing is he didn’t finish the day with 18 – something he blames on the talent upfield. “Blokes like Paul Martin, Wayne Slattery (five goals), Shane Butler, Phil Would, they were fantastic

The Electrifying 80s kicks on the run,” Harris said. “They’d get it into the forward line and just take a pot shot.” Facing an 87-point deficit at the half, Blight unveiled what would be one of his trademark ploys as a successful coach – he was never afraid to try something. The magnets were tossed in the air leaving explosive Ralph Sewer in the back pocket, Ron Fuller at full back on Harris, Blacksell at centre half-forward and defender Steve Jacquier at half-forward, where he finished with three goals. But still, the bleeding got worse. South piled on another nine goals to two in the third term to stretch its lead to 130 points by the last change. The most extraordinary chapter was still to come. The Panthers went on their merry way, booting a further 10 goals, finishing one shy of becoming just the second team to reach 40. Yet they were outscored in that final term! Desperate to save blushes and with some unsavoury home truths ringing in their ears from coach Blight, the Warriors added 11.4 to finish with a very respectable 19.14 for the afternoon. By the end of it all, South’s score of 39.16 (250) was shaded only by Glenelg’s unbelievable 49.23 (317) against Central in 1975. Graham Cornes played in that game and coached South in this one. “I remember sitting in the stands and watching it all unfold,” he said. “It was just one of those perfect days when things go right and you’re just in cruise control, basically.” Cornes played in some high-scoring Glenelg sides in the 1970s and says he crafted his attacking game plan in his two seasons with the Panthers. “Definitely the emphasis was on attack but there was always the philosophy that your defence was a team within a team. We didn’t neglect defence but it was about the competitiveness to win the ball, use it effectively and go forward as quickly as we could.” sanfl.com.au

TORRENS UNIVERSITY SANFL U18 WRAP

BY ZAC MILBANK

Glenelg’s Camporeale twins – Ben and Lucas – are continuing to have an impact as they inspired the Tigers’ 43-point Torrens University SANFL Under-18 Round 14 win against North Adelaide. After returning from college duty this month, the sons of Carlton premiership wingman Scott Camporeale have been in hot form, racking up 53 disposals between them at Prospect Oval. Team-mate Tom Corcoran (25 disposals) was rated the Bays’ best, while Ben Ridgway (24 disposals, 10 tackles) and Harry Francis (three goals) also made their presence felt. Hunter Press, Jed Dignan and Kalan Caputo did their best to prevent the Roosters succumbing to a seventh loss for the year. West Adelaide caused the upset of the season when it toppled premiership hopeful Central District by 20 points at X Convenience Oval to earn its first win of 2023. Snapping a 13-game losing streak, the Bloods led at every change in the boilover, holding the Bulldogs to just four behinds in the opening quarter. Kade Hilton booted 4.4 from 14 disposals and five marks, while Carter Wright and Padrick O’Donoghue (20 disposals) were also lauded by West officials. Lachlan Giles, Sam Sibbick and James Noack fought hard to try to prevent the Bulldogs suffering their shock loss. A desperate fourth-quarter flurry lifted South Adelaide to victory over fellow finals contender Sturt by 22 points at Flinders University Stadium. Leading by just three points at three-quarter-time, the Panthers finished strongly to kick 4.2 in the last term while keeping the Double Blues to just 1.1. 17 disposals, seven clearances, 25 hit-outs and a goal, while Tom Wheaton (19 disposals) and Jake Agnew (16 disposals, four goals) also shone. Sturt praised small forward Wil Thomas for his game, while also recognising Declan Gladigau and Loch Rawlinson. Woodville-West Torrens overcame a goalless first quarter to move a game clear at the top of the table with a 21-point win against Norwood at The Parade. Managing just five behinds before the first change, the Eagles didn’t make the most of their chances but still won comfortably enough 8.16 to 6.7. Charlie West was a constant presence in the air, grabbing 10 marks, while Jake Andrews and Tate Delmenico were also impressive. Norwood’s Connor Butcher (27 disposals, six clearances), Jacob Newton (30 disposals, six clearances) and William Rowlands (23 disposals) did their best in trying to cause an unlikely result. sanfl.com.au

BIG CLASH BY PETER CORNWALL

2017

Clashes between Port Adelaide and Sturt have always been big. In fact the three biggest crowds to football matches in South Australia – and, yes, that includes AFL games – have been to Sturt-Port fixtures. Of the seven biggest crowds at SANFL matches, Port has played in six and Sturt has also played in six. The other teams involved in those games were Norwood (against Port, 1957 grand final) and Glenelg (against Sturt in 1974 in the first grand final at Football Park). The biggest crowd of them all was the 1976 premiership decider when the Double Blues, with Jack Oatey claiming a record 10th SANFL premiership as coach and inspired by a colossal game from Australian Football Hall of Famer Rick Davies, knocked off the red-hot favourites the Magpies. The rivalry between these sides was at its peak as they battled their fourth grand final in 12 years. The arrival of fans at Football Park for the blockbuster created such a crush it is

20

sanfl.com.au

1965

acknowledged about 80,000 made it into the ground and thousands of others were turned away, although the crowd figure released on the day was 66,897 amid concerns over regulations. Hundreds of fans were forced out onto the ground, watching the game perched between the boundary line and the fence. In 1965-66 coaching legends Oatey and Fos Williams were wonderful rivals and that rivalry became huge among these clubs and their fans. In 1965 Williams won his ninth Magpies grand final as coach but Oatey’s Blues made them earn it, the Pies hanging on by three points. There was a then record 62,543 fans at

1968

1976

Adelaide Oval to witness skipper Geof Motley secure his ninth flag. The following year at the Oval 59,417 fans saw Double Blues captain John Halbert hold aloft the Thomas Seymour Hill premiership cup to end a 26-year drought for the club, beating Port to start a stunning run of five successive flags. The rivalry again reached great heights in the 2017 grand final when Martin Mattner’s Blues held on for a famous one-point win. There were 39,813 fans on the edge of their seats for that one. And Mattner’s Blues today head to Alberton, in second place but up against Tyson Goldsack’s in-form Magpies. Let the rivalry continue.
