IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

John Kantilaftas is welcomed into West Adelaide's Hall of Fame in 2021 by Neil Kerley.

BY STEVE BARRETT

Incoming West Adelaide president John Kantilaftas has been in the hot seat for barely a fortnight but the Bloods have already ticked the first box in his list of objectives. He wanted West to become competitive again, as a starting point, and a quick glance at the team’s on-field results in 2023 suggests that goal has been realised. Coming off four straight wooden spoons, the Bloods are one victory shy of fourth position on the ladder, having already won – by mid-June – as many games as last year and more than in each of 2019-21, with their best percentage since 2018. Impressing under rookie coach Adam Hartlett, West has chalked up wins over last year’s grand finalists Norwood and North Adelaide and came within four points of snapping Sturt’s unbeaten start to the year. “I said at the end of last year, the first thing we have to do is become competitive all the time,” Kantilaftas said. “So far, we’ve been very competitive. From there, we start building on that with these young players, then I think the success will come as time goes on. I’m under no illusion this is a long-term plan for us on the field. I think we’re heading in the right direction.” While Kantliaftas is new in this role, he is no stranger to making key behind-the-scenes decisions at SANFL level. He served as CEO at Woodville-West Torrens from 200108 – the Eagles winning a flag and playing in four grand finals in this time – and the Bloods from 2013-17, which included their droughtbreaking 2015 premiership. Kantilaftas has spent the past seven years building surf clubs around the state working as a project manager for Surf Life Saving SA and was sought out for the vacancy at Richmond Oval by

outgoing president Murray Forbes. “After Murray made the decision to retire, he approached me and thought I have the skills or temperament to take us to the next step,” said 62-year-old Kantilaftas, whose daughter Anna is a former Football Budget editor. “He convinced me I should do it. Financially we’ve got our challenges and so do we on the field. There’s a lot to do but I’m looking forward to working with the board and progressing the club further.” Kantliftas has red and black coursing through his veins, having played 156 games for the Bloods from 1979-88, primarily as a back pocket. A Westies Hall of Famer and best-and-fairest winner in 1981 – Neil Kerley’s first season in his return to the club as coach – Kantilaftas’s most cherished football memory will always be the 1983 premiership. The Bloods will be celebrating the 40-year anniversary of their 34-point grand final triumph over Sturt when these sides clash at Hisense Stadium in Round 12. “When I walked onto the field that day, I was supremely confident if we got off to a good start, I didn’t think we could lose it,” Kantilaftas

recalled of that special day. “I remember Michael Graham kicked a few goals on me early in the game (Graham kicked all four of Sturt’s second-quarter goals) and I thought, ‘geez, I’m in for a hard day’. But we kicked 10 in that quarter and by halfway through the third, I felt we were going to win that premiership. An opposition team had to kick a really big score to beat us because we were kicking 20 goals every week.” West averaged an eye-popping 145 points per game in the minor round before piling on 24.16 (160) to thump the Redlegs by 74 points in the second semi-final, then slotting 21.16 (142) a fortnight later against Sturt. “We had so much firepower – Bruce Lindner and Roger Luders at centre half-forward and full forward, and Michael Smith could play any of those positions,” Kantilaftas said. “(Captain and Jack Oatey Medallist) Ian Borchard was as mentally tough as anyone I’ve ever met in my life ... and Neil was the best coach I ever played under.” Kantilaftas knows all about the good times at Westies and wants to help bring them back. sanfl.com.au

MATCH PREVIEWS BY PETER CORNWALL

He’s quite the showman and Glenelg forward Lachie Hosie, SANFL’s leading goalkicker with 27, was loving the bumper crowd of 7285 at the Bay making plenty of noise as the Tigers claimed a remarkable 105-point win against previously unbeaten Sturt. Photo: David Mariuz

CENTRAL V EAGLES It could hardly be tighter for the last two spots in the top five right now. The Eagles and the Bulldogs are the sides holding on to those positions after Round 9 but their 4-5 win-loss records are the same as Port and North. And West and South are just one game further back. Every match is pretty important right now, this clash one of those ‘four point’ games. It’s especially important after both sides suffered losses last week, Central at the hands of Port, the side directly below it and now behind only by a slender percentage of 0.76. The brave Bulldogs were within two points of a quality Magpies line-up late in the third quarter but finished 23 points short and the Eagles finished the same margin behind SA’s other AFL club. They looked a big chance against third-ranked Adelaide when they shot out to a 16-point lead early in the second quarter on the back of six unanswered goals. But the Crows gradually overhauled them, kicking four of the last five goals. There was a positive for the Eagles in James Rowe’s performance in the midfield but they were beaten in the 4

sanfl.com.au

clearances 43-19 – always likely to be a problem considering the Crows’ powerful engine room and the injury to skipper Joseph Sinor and loss of State midfielder Mitch Hardie in the mid-season draft. Bulldogs Jarrod Schiller and Harry Grant had 17 clearances between them against Port. Grant, whose grunt is crucial to the Dogs’ finals push, is having an outstanding season and he amassed a match-high 36 possessions. Can the Eagles stop him?

NORWOOD V PORT You could hear the sigh of relief emanating from Noarlunga all the way to The Parade when Norwood kicked the last two goals against South to eventually seal a breakthrough win by 23 points. It was fitting gutsy skipper Matthew Nunn booted the last one, giving him a worthy celebration to mark his 100th game. After an astounding eight successive losses to start their premiership defence, it all seemed a bit too easy as the Redlegs stormed to a 10.7-to-1.4 three-quarter-time lead against the Panthers. But Norwood supporters’ nerves were jangling as South kicked the next seven goals to

charge within 12 points with six minutes remaining. But the composure that marked last year’s stunning grand final win returned as, kicking into the strong breeze, Connor McLean and Nunn finished the game in style. Now the Legs will feel up for the challenge that is old rival Port Adelaide. And the Magpies are right around the mark. After a long injury list last year wreaked havoc there’s not many major concerns this year – although skipper Cam Sutcliffe has only played one game while battling a serious calf issue. But Port, with some Power players pushing hard for AFL recalls, has won four of its past six SANFL games and stormed home when challenged by Central in a crucial 23-point win. Orazio Fantasia reminded us all of his talents with four goals, while midseason draftee Quinton Narkle again showed what a huge pick-up he is by collecting 33 disposals, six clearances and a goal. Coach Tyson Goldsack was rightly delighted with his side’s slick ball movement as it’s not just Port’s AFL side that’s looking dangerous.

STURT V NORTH These sides have had huge wakeup calls and will be wanting to turn it all around here and now. While both sides knew they would be tested in their Round 9 clashes, neither would have expected things to go quite so pear-shaped. The down-on-confidence Roosters were outgunned by West by 29 points, their first loss at the hands of the Bloods in four years. And the Blues will want to consign to history their 105-point drubbing at the hands of new top side Glenelg, their first defeat for the season. Sturt’s loss of inspirational

midfielder Tom Lewis with an ankle injury was a big loss – but 105 points worth? The Blues’ form had been wavering with successive wins by less than a goal against South and West but they were shellshocked as the rampaging Tigers made them look second rate. The Roosters, who have had enough injury worries of their own, had 69 more disposals than West but only managed 5.9 to the Bloods’ 10.8 as they slipped to their fourth loss in five games. While West was defensively outstanding, North seemed to go into its shell, continually going short by foot or handballing its way into trouble. Despite having so much of the ball the Roosters went inside-50 three times less than West. It’s hard to make confidence magically reappear but both these sides are way better than they showed last game. One will be feeling much better after this important clash.

WEST V GLENELG There’s been a growing rumble about a Glenelg side that’s been building remarkable momentum and looking every bit a premiership threat, now up to eight successive wins. First the fans start making some noise, then the media gets on board and now there’s some talk that really points to the 2023 Bays being the real deal. In the past two rounds the top-ranked Tigers have beaten the other two sides in the top three, showing their never-saydie spirit and strong belief to overcome Adelaide with two late goals to snatch a two-point thriller, then producing a spectacular allround performance to completely overwhelm Sturt by an incredible 105 points. Crows coach Michael Godden said: “We got beaten by a better side in the end – I think Glenelg is the best side we’ve played this year.” And Sturt boss Martin Mattner added: “Credit to Glenelg, that is the best I have seen a team in a long, long time. They were very good all around the ground.” Both are SANFL premiership coaches, so they know what it takes to succeed – there seems little more worth adding to that to underline just how dangerous the Bays are looking.

West might have been overwhelmed by this sort of a challenge over the previous four seasons. But don’t expect that to be the case now. The Bloods are on their way up. They were particularly impressive in sweeping aside North by 29 points and, dead-set unlucky not to have been the first side to knock over Sturt the previous week, they have already won as many games as last year. Adam Hartlett’s side is right on track to achieve his pre-season goal of six wins but there’s no doubt he will be revising that aim as the Bloods lift themselves into the finals fight. Hartlett’s first aim this year was to defend better all over the ground and restrict opposition scoring but his men have moved well past that and against the Roosters strung together some impressive attacking plays, forcing turnovers before moving the ball quickly out of defence and with method into attack where they looked dangerous, kicking clear by five goals by three-quarter-time. The way they locked down in the last quarter to make sure there could be no North comeback was the sign of a young side maturing in a hurry.

SOUTH V ADELAIDE It really summed up this season so far. South, for 25 minutes, was

outstanding, ramming on seven unanswered goals against Norwood. But where were the Panthers for most of the game when it was all on the line? South, hurt by the losses of leading goalkicker Zach Sproule, Matt Rose and Ely Smith with injuries and looking for a win to stay level with the Eagles, Central, Port and North, would have been happy to be level with the Redlegs after kicking into the wind in the first quarter. But the Panthers were goalless in the second and third terms, falling 57 points behind. A whirlwind lastquarter assault proved too little, too late, eventually beaten by 23 points. But the competition is so even, South, with Magarey Medallist Bryce Gibbs on his way back from a broken thumb, is still in the finals hunt. But it will want to put in four quarters against a strong Crows line-up. Adelaide was challenged by the Eagles but eventually muscled past them by 23 points. Harry Schoenberg, Matt Crouch and Sam Berry form a powerhouse midfield, while Tariek Newchurch added plenty of spark up forward with four goals, including the first three of the clash with his first three kicks. Clearly, South won’t be able to switch off at all this week. sanfl.com.au

THIS FABULOUS CENTURY BY JONATHON PARKER

Jarrad Wright has his say as the fourth South Adelaide coach to take charge in 100 games and with Panthers skipper Jake Summerton, who reached his century with the club on the same day in Round 9.

South Adelaide mentor Jarrad Wright carved a slice of history in Round 9 when he coached his 100th SANFL league match for the Panthers. Wright joined an exclusive club of South coaches to have reached the ton. The first to make the 100-game milestone was Laurie ‘Buck’ Ashby, who led the club from 1937 through the Second World War until 1945, coaching 112 games. It wouldn’t be until Haydn Bunton in 1975 the Panthers would have similar stability, the SA Football Hall of Famer coaching a club record 179 games from 1975-82, including a trip to the 1979 grand final. John Reid lifted South from some tough times into a strong position while coaching 134 games from 1988-93, before taking up the role of football operations general manager at Adelaide Football Club in 1995. Wright joined these famous names when the Panthers tackled Norwood on the King’s Birthday Monday public holiday, on the same day skipper Jake Summerton played his 100th game for the club. “It’s an absolute honour to be provided an opportunity to coach one game, let alone 100 at this amazing organisation which has such a rich history in South Australian football,” Wright said. “It’s very humbling to be joining the

select company of previous coaches throughout 147 years of our history, especially John Reid, who has been a terrific support and coach mentor of mine since I was appointed in 2018.” Wright was instrumental in securing the services of Summerton, having built a good relationship in their time at the Eagles, where Wright was an assistant coach. South Adelaide CEO Neill Sharpe said it was pleasing Wright and Summerton should bring up their 100-game club milestone together. “As coach Jarrad has shown a great ability to get the best out of his players and Jake Summerton is a testament to that,” Sharpe said. “Jake was a solid reserves player at the Eagles but given an opportunity has grown into a reliable league footballer and now captain of the club. “Jarrad has shown since his appointment in 2018 a great ability to get the best out of his teams and develop footballers. He has helped instil a strong culture within the playing group and has been instrumental in attracting toptier talent with the likes of Bryce Gibbs and Matthew Broadbent turning South Adelaide into a destination club.” When talking about some of his

most memorable moments from his first 100 games, Wright highlighted his first game at Noarlunga in 2018. “Coaching brings many special and memorable moments personally but mainly through the influence you can have on others. For me personally, winning my first game in Round 1 at home versus Glenelg in 2018 was nice to get the monkey off the back and settle into the role and know you belong. Leading the club to back-to-back preliminary finals in 2020-21 for the first time in 50-plus years was very special, while also heartbreaking at the same time. “Seeing the joy on players’ faces when they get their debut guernsey and what it means to them and their family and watching the players I have coached and had influence in their development get an opportunity at AFL level is also quite special. But, more importantly, creating an environment where all people (players, staff, coaches) can develop their craft, help them grow on and off the field and building lifelong friendships is what brings me the most joy.” Wright has steered the Panthers to three finals series, two preliminary finals, a 53-47 win-loss record and has only missed one game, which was the opening round of 2022 due to health and safety protocols. sanfl.com.au

GRIT AND GLORY BY PETER CORNWALL

EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE. That was the motto Central District’s women’s squad adopted for 2023. And wow, they sure stuck to it. No challenge seemed too big as Ben Hunt’s women kept fighting back, showing grit and guts against the odds to snare a historic Hostplus SANFLW League flag. There were so many times they could easily have decided near enough was good enough. But led by the never-say-die spirit of inspirational skipper Shelby Smith, Central just kept on coming. Always the underdogs, they never led at any stage of the grand final against minor premier South Adelaide, which was gunning for a record third premiership. Until, that is, the last 20 seconds. What a way to win your first women’s flag, in your first finals series. It wasn’t just in the grand final the Doggies could so easily have come a cropper. They suffered convincing losses to Sturt (37 points) and Glenelg (32 points) in the first five rounds, then trailed reigning premier North 4.4 to 0.0 at quartertime in Round 6. Turning that game into a remarkable five-point win turned the season on its head. 8

Central learned how to snatch wins from the jaws of defeat as Jasmine Evans goaled at the 18.40 mark of the last quarter for a two-point win against Norwood, Rosenzweig sealed a four-point win against Sturt with 36 seconds left and Caitlin Wendland’s late goal against North saw the Dogs home by one point. Six wins in the last seven minor rounds earned Central a 9-3 winloss record, second spot and the coveted finals double-chance. The Bulldogs needed that, because they came up 11 points short in the second semi-final against South. But they could not have rebounded more strongly, thumping Norwood by 40 points in the preliminary final. The grand final provided plenty of fresh challenges. Ruck Georgia Avery faced a key match-up against South’s dominant ruck Soriah Moon and she showed her intent from the start, leaping high to win the first hit-out. But just six minutes later she was carried from the ground with an ankle injury in what might have been a critical blow to the Bulldogs’ hopes. South’s Lucy Northcott marked in

the goalsquare and kicked the only goal of the first quarter as the Panthers’ pressure, their tackling and smothering, were suffocating. Melissa Anderson goaled with an impressive snap 10 minutes into the second term, then Jorja Hooper soccered another off the ground and the Panthers led 3.3 to 0.1. It was looking a bit like the North game – but this was a grand final. Late goals have been gold for the desperate Dogs and in each of the second, third and final quarters they pinched crucial, last-gasp goals. Charlotte Riggs marked strongly and converted a minute before half-time, bringing the contest back to life. It seemed like the Bulldogs were kicking themselves out of the contest for much of the third quarter as they added five behinds to one from South. Then, with 19 minutes, 55 seconds gone, dangerous Evans marked and goaled and it was very much game on, South clinging to a 3.4-to-2.6 lead. The Panthers were minor premiers for good reason and the major premiership looked like it was heading back to Noarlunga when Northcott read the ball off hands

and converted in the second minute of the final quarter. But Laitiah Huynh’s sensational snap just three minutes later put Central within four points again, then for the next 12 tension-packed minutes no-one could score. SANFLW’s leading goalkicker Rosenzweig had the chance to put the Dogs in front for the first time at the 17-minute-mark but hit the post. Maybe this time the challenge was just too big. Then Cailten Teague was awarded a free within kicking distance. A 25-metre penalty sealed the deal and Teague rammed it home. In front. The flag won. From the last kick of the game. Booting a last-gasp goal to win a grand final is any footballer’s dream. But Teague had what she described as a “nightmare” during the week of the premiership decider – “I had to kick the winning goal … I was freaking out”. She was thinking about the dream as she walked back to take her crucial kick. “Then they called the 25 … I was like, I am not having this go on any longer, so I just played on and kicked it. It was pretty unreal.” Bulldogs coach Hunt admitted to “a couple of heart attacks in the last quarter” but when Teague goaled, followed by the final siren, he said “we just went off” in the box. It’s hard to imagine just how forlorn it must have been in South’s box, to have what they seemingly had deserved snatched away in such dramatic circumstances. But no-one would have wanted to take anything away from Central, which had 31 inside-50s to South’s 16, or its skipper Smith, who led the way as best-afield with a gamehigh 20 disposals, along with seven clearances and 17 tackles, creating a pretty decent slice of history.

HISTOR

Glenelg’s Clarrie Window has his eyes on the ball for Glenelg against Port Adelaide in 1950.

GENERATION GAME BY PETER CORNWALL

Winning a medal seemed a more serious business for Gary Window, with his Magarey at Adelaide in 1965, than for his granddaughter, Piper, beaming as SA football commission chair Rob Kerin presents her with the SANFLW best and fairest.

Piper Window reckoned her grandpa might have been lost for words. For SA footy fans who know Gary Window, that seemed unlikely. But they had just achieved something even less likely, something never done before. Piper this month emulated the feat of her grandfather in winning a SANFL league fairest and most brilliant medal. The dynamic 17-year-old Glenelg midfielder won the Hostplus SANFLW best and fairest 58 years after Gary had snared the Magarey Medal. There’s already plenty of history in the Window family, spanning four generations of SANFL league footballers. Gary’s father, Clarrie, was an outstanding Glenelg 10

sanfl.com.au

defender who represented SA. Central District great Gary needs little introduction. He was captain in the club’s first league game, in 1964. He was its first Magarey winner and a Bulldogs best-andfairest. The SA Football Hall of Famer coached the Dogs and as a highly-popular, wonderfully passionate commentator continued to be known to generations of SANFL fans. Gary’s son Peter – Piper’s dad – played league footy with West Adelaide and Central. And Piper’s brother Hunter is a member of the Bays’ senior squad. But it was Piper who was in the spotlight in the Magarey Room at Adelaide Oval as she made a stunning clean sweep of this year’s SANFLW awards. The quicksilver

on-baller polled 19 votes to finish two ahead of West Adelaide’s Zoe Venning. “This is incredible. I love playing footy. I love going to training with the girls – sometimes you have a bad day but when you go to training it makes it all better,” said Window, who was adjudged best-afield in five games. Piper also won the Kia Coaches Award, polling 59 votes, Norwood’s Tahlita Buethke second on 44 and, not surprisingly, earned the Powerade Breakthrough Player award as most promising under-21 player. And she was selected as ruck-rover in The Advertiser SANFLW Team of the Year. She spent more time out on the stage collecting awards than at her table having dinner. Gary couldn’t have been more

excited. “It was unbelievable. We’re all so proud of her,” he said. Piper, who has played 33 SANFLW games and is destined to soon make her mark at the highest level, is already one-up on the rest of her remarkable family. She is a league premiership player. In just her 11th game and despite being just 15, she was one of Glenelg’s best players in its 23-point grand final win against West in 2021. While Bulldogs great Gary was cheering Piper’s Tigers on, barracking for Glenelg had been a weekly occurrence in the late 1940s up to 1950. Clarrie Window played 72 games for the Tigers in a Warinterrupted career between 194050. A rugged half-back, he would trek down from Gawler to play for the Bays and in the last few years of his career Gary would join him on the train trip to the city, followed by catching the tram to Glenelg. Young Gary loved carrying his dad’s kit bag on game day, even though “the boots were heavy … they were great big clodhoppers”, and it was a long day by the time they had trekked from Gawler to the Bay and back. “Stan Wickham was a conductor on the tram when we came down here,” Gary recalled and, as a youngster, he was immersed in Glenelg. “I loved it – I thought they were the bees’ knees.” His heroes were Ted Robjent, Allan Crabb, Colin Churchett and the Taylor brothers. And his dad, of course. Clarrie had started making a name for himself as a footballer with

Willaston – as an 18-year-old he starred with brothers Cyril and Dave in the club’s 1939 Gawler Football Association grand final win. There was no league team in the area in those days, two decades before Central District made its first appearance in the B grade, when Gary was its most promising youngster. When Glenelg showed interest in Clarrie, he was undaunted by the thought of travelling down without a car. He was super fit and always willing to throw his bike onto a train at Gawler and when he reached the city, cycle wherever he needed to go. Clarrie played his first three league games for Glenelg late in the 1940 season but was posted to Brisbane with the Army in World War II and didn’t play for the Bays again until 1946. “It would take a couple of hours (to get from Gawler to Glenelg for a game),” Gary said. “Dad wouldn’t worry about that. He was very dedicated.” Clarrie was such a strong mark he was dubbed ‘Sticky Fingers’ by his team-mates. It’s a trait Piper has inherited. Clarrie’s good hands combined with his straight-ahead attack on the footy made him an outstanding player in the wet and it helped him shine in muddy conditions at the 1950 national championship in Brisbane. Window was at the peak of his powers when he played his last game for the Tigers. It also happened to be the biggest game he had played in, the 1950 grand final.

He formed a powerful half-back line with Don Taylor and Brian Wright but they could not stop Norwood snaring the flag. Clarrie, aged 30, then accepted an offer to captaincoach West Whyalla. Clarrie, with brother Les, Russell Stopp and Jimmy Banks, in 1954 established Salisbury North Football Club and, as an outstanding junior, Gary played here with his dad. When Central District was formed, Gary was disappointed he had to play reserves footy for five seasons before he belatedly played at league level – he won the reserves Magarey Medal in 1963 before winning the league Medal in 1965 – as the Bulldogs served a long apprenticeship. “I should have been playing league football in 1958-59 when I was about 18 but all of a sudden it was karma because I ended up getting all these firsts – first captain, first State player, first Magarey Medal,” he said. Gary’s son Peter also played at Central, in five league games, while also playing five with Westies. And he spent some time at Glenelg as under-19s coach and league runner. When Piper started with Glenelg, Gary was delighted, and not because her debut was on Elizabeth Oval. “It felt great – because of dad,” he said of her playing with the Tigers. “He would be so amazed by what she has done. She’s terrific, she’s done so well … I would never have dreamt of it.” Piper is writing her own history. While adding to the Window legend. sanfl.com.au

TORRENS UNIVERSITY SANFL U18 WRAP

BY TOM WYMAN

South Adelaide claimed a crucial 34-point win against Norwood under lights at Coopers Stadium in Round 11 of the Torrens University SANFL Under-18s. After a tight and low-scoring first term, the thirdplaced Panthers were able to get some separation on the scoreboard, led by a dominant midfield. Returning to the South line-up, tough midfielder Tom Wheaton was dominant around the ground, kicking three goals along with his outstanding 15 clearances and 32 disposals. Forward Jay Polkinghorne had a night to remember for the Redlegs, taking eight marks and booting five goals. Central District maintained its position at the top of the ladder with a 19-point win over North Adelaide at Prospect Oval. The Bulldogs gained an early lead and never looked back, snaring a comfortable win against North, which had beaten Central by seven points in Round 3. Tom Cochrane was the leading ball-winner for the Dogs with 24 disposals, as Riley McDonald battled hard for his team on the inside. Angus Tully was at his prolific best for the Roosters, gathering 34 disposals, with Owen Kalic and Hugh Payze also among North’s best. Sturt jumped into the top four with a 21-point triumph over rival Glenelg at Wigan Oval. In a relatively low-scoring affair, the Double Blues always looked in control despite never putting great distance between themselves and the Bays on the scoreboard. Ben Camporeale had the ball on a string for Glenelg, collecting 37 disposals, 12 marks and 10 clearances, with Michael Smith and Beau Symonds also among the Tigers’ best. and 11 clearances) and Kobe McEntee (23 disposals and seven tackles) were influential for Sturt, along with Ned Atkinson, who kicked a goal from 17 disposals. Woodville-West Torrens made it seven wins in a row with a strong 50-point victory over West Adelaide at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval. The form team of the under-18 competition, the Eagles set the game up with a terrific opening term to remain equal top on eight wins with Central District. Zac Schwarz was busy, accumulating 31 disposals and nine clearances, while key forward Izaac Niemann booted five goals. Charlie Haysman flew the flag for the Bloods with 29 disposals, eight marks and two goals, with Sam Burbridge West’s only other multiple goalkicker. sanfl.com.au

ALF SET THE PACE BY PETER ARGENT

One of the special group who played in South Adelaide men’s most recent premiership in 1964, Alf Skuse was an excitement machine, noted for his sizzling speed. Popular Skuse, who enjoyed a productive life, passed away on June 10. He was 81. Described by Magarey Medallist and noted scribe Jeff Pash as “a readymade rover from the beginning, with all the required virtues, including pace”, Skuse was a Panthers and State star. A halfforward-cum-rover, he played 139 games and kicked 195 goals for South from 1962-70. He played nine games for SA in SANFL’s golden area, proudly representing the State in the 1966 national carnival in Hobart, where he was famous for wearing early Adidas footy boots with the famous three stripes. Skuse played on a half-forward flank and was one of the best players in the ’64 grand final triumph, when first-year Panthers coach Neil Kerley lifted the club from bottom to top, beating Port Adelaide by 27 points in the decider. “There was a crowd of over 56,000 crammed into Adelaide Oval that day,” Skuse said in an interview in 2010. “It was an amazing crowd and over 25,000 of them must have 20

flooded onto the ground (after the final siren),” said Skuse, recalling the fans’ excitement after the Panthers had ended a 26-year premiership drought. The Magpies had beaten South by one point in the second semi-final two weeks earlier but Skuse seemingly wasn’t all that nervous as he tucked into a steak cooked by his mum, Mona, for breakfast on grand final day. “Kerls was the first of the professional coaches,” Skuse said. “In 1963 we finished bottom but were a better side than that. He got the best out of the entire group. He was the boss and you knew exactly what was expected of you.” Skuse played on Port hard man Neville ‘Chicken’ Hayes. “Port was still coming at us halfway through the final quarter,” said Skuse, who had the ability to impact the scoreboard, although he could be inaccurate. “I actually kicked one (goal) and then ‘Daisy’ (Ian Day) capped his career off with a goal. We didn’t want a repeat of the second semi-final … we weren’t going to let that happen.” A Gawler lad, Skuse was the eldest son of nine children, and was originally keen to become a jockey, working at stables before heading to school.

Skuse won a Mail Medal in 1961 with the Willaston Donnybrooks in the Gawler and Districts competition in a premiership year and was runnerup for the competition’s top accolade at Hahndorf in the Hills competition the next year, despite moving to the Panthers during the season. He was runner-up to Mark Coombe in the 1969 Knuckey Cup for South’s best and fairest. Skuse captain-coached Gawler Central Tigers in the Gawler and Districts league from 1971-73, collecting a second Mail Medal in ’72. Skuse’s footy days finished at 32 when he had heart surgery, having an artificial aorta valve fitted. He had played his entire football career with this ailment. The operation gave him a long and fulfilling life and his specialist was 1960s Sturt premiership ruckman Tony ‘Doc’ Clarkson. A noted speedstar – perhaps the quickest player in the SANFL in the 1960s – Skuse won SA’s premier foot race the Bay Sheffield in 1964 and the Appila Gift in the Mid North the following season. He became a noted bowls player at Gawler, being president of the club in 2002 and ’03. A committeeman for two decades, he started Night Owls bowls at the club in 1984 and was a greens-worker for 30 years.
