NUNN AND KENNERLEY SHARE LOAD BY JOSH TEAKLE, NORWOOD FOOTBALL CLUB

Jacob Kennerley has been elevated to the position of Norwood co-captain and will lead the SANFL team alongside 2022 premiership skipper Matthew Nunn. Nunn and Kennerley will lead the side as co-captains for the remainder of the 2023 season, a move that has been endorsed by Nunn, the leadership group, coaching group and senior management. Nunn has captained the side since the start of the 2021 season but expressed his interest in sharing the leadership role with Kennerley due to personal reasons external to the football club. Nunn said his ongoing battles with his mental wellbeing had elevated in recent months and believed it was important to reach out to the coaching and leadership group to gain further assistance in the captaincy role. “I have been battling some ongoing mental wellness for the past six-12
months which has started to impact on my captaincy,” he said. “It is important for people to know what’s happening with this decision. I want people to feel like they can speak up when they are having their own struggles with mental health. “I am very keen to be able to lean on Jacob, share some of the load and decisions with him, it will be incredibly beneficial for me, the playing group and the club. It’s a tough decision – I am into my third year as captain and I know what it takes to be a good captain, and when it’s time to put your hand up for help.” Kennerley was integral to Norwood’s leadership during the 2022 premiership season, stepping up into the captain role when Nunn was sidelined through injury. “Jacob is a great young leader – he does the right things and leads by example, we get along so well,” Nunn said. “He stepped up last year
ALL THE ZING
when we really needed him, he has such a level head and I am really proud of how he goes about it. This is a really positive move for the club.” Kennerley, 22, said he was excited to step into the role. “It’s an honour,” he said. “Ever since coming back to the club in 2021 this is something I have aspired to do and I am more than up for it. I am very appreciative of the board, CEO James Fantasia, Twig (coach Jade Rawlings) and Nunny for backing me in to take up the role. I got the chance to captain the side last year for several rounds while Nunny was injured and I loved it. I feel like I led strongly and I played better footy in the role – I have confidence coming into the role now.” Norwood’s 2023 leadership group includes Nunn and Kennerley as co-captains, Matthew Panos, Harry Boyd, Declan Hamilton, Nik Rokahr and Jack Heard.

MATCH PREVIEWS BY PETER CORNWALL
CENTRAL V WEST There’s a fine line between pleasure and pain and don’t the Bulldogs and Bloods know all about that. The Doggies may not have snared the premiership points at Unley last week but they certainly didn’t lose any fans as they made top side Sturt struggle and scrape to a three-point win after trailing for the first three quarters. The week after Nick Lange’s last-minute goal delivered an unforgettable fourpoint win against the high-flying Crows, the siren at Unley was a huge letdown. But things are definitely looking up for Paul Thomas’s men, beaten by 98 points by the Blues in last year’s corresponding fixture. Jez McLennan led the way from the back with his desperate attack on the ball and he is averaging 21 possessions a game after returning from Gold Coast. There’s plenty of grunt in the midfield, too, where skipper Jarrod Schiller is always an inspiration and Harry Grant has been averaging 22 touches and seven clearances. After the pleasure West deservedly felt with its 22-point win against 4

South there was nothing but pain in the first half against Port. It looked like the Bloods’ bus had arrived late in Loxton as they trailed 1.4 to 8.8 at the main break. Young and inexperienced sides are prone to struggle the week after breakthrough wins and coach Adam Hartlett described West’s start as “simply terrible”. But the Bloods responded to his half-time plea to get back to the basics of winning clearances and contested ball, kicking nine of the last 12 goals of the game. Powerade Breakthrough Player Liam Delahunty again showed his upside as he and Josh Gore kicked four goals each and the Bloods briefly looked an outside chance before falling 17 points short. Hartlett will be focusing on a much better start from his men this week. And Thomas will be hoping for a better end.
NORTH V ADELAIDE They clashed last season in a second semi-final thriller and there’s great anticipation for their next tussle with both sides having 3-1 records in 2023. The Crows’ first game in the SANFL was against this
opponent at this ground nine years ago but they have come a long way since they were thumped by 47 points back then. As they were last year, the Crows are the highestscoring team in the league, averaging a whopping 108 points a game – unbeaten Sturt is next on 89. Adelaide was breathtaking in hammering South by 84 points at Adelaide Oval, having 63 inside-50s to the Panthers’ 38. Imagine if they’d kicked straighter than they did in booting 19.20. Coach Michael Godden understandably was proud of his side’s free-flowing fourquarter performance. Jackson Hately capped off his good work – he is averaging 31 possessions per game – with three goals, while Tyler Brown continues to get in and get the ball, leading the league with 16 handballs per game. The Roosters, who edged out the Crows by 10 points in last year’s second semi, will feel good about this week’s big clash after wins against Norwood (54 points) and the Eagles (16 points) just five days later. Sam Mayes showed what he can add to North’s imposing
midfield in his first game in the red and white since 2012 by picking up 22 touches, while Campbell Combe’s numbers continue to be huge – he is averaging 26 possessions, 11 tackles and eight clearances a game. And North still has Magarey Medallist Aaron Young (concussion) and Andrew Moore (back) to come back.
SOUTH V GLENELG The Panthers will be glad to be back home. Having beaten Central and the Eagles at Noarlunga in the opening two weeks of the season, what’s happened next has come as a shock – a 22-point loss to West at Richmond and 84-point thumping at Adelaide Oval from the Crows. Mitch O’Neill continues to fight for and win plenty of the ball – he’s averaging 28 possessions, eight clearances and seven tackles – but the less said about last week’s loss the better. Still, you just know the Panthers will be throwing themselves into it against their strong local rival. And they’ll need to because Glenelg is starting to look mighty dangerous, playing the sort of tough four-quarter footy new coach Darren Reeves has been looking for in winning its past three games. He was delighted in the second half of the Tigers’ 30-point win against Norwood they spent long periods in their forward half thanks to manic defensive pressure and repeat stoppages, a trait he has strongly been working towards. The longer the game went the more the results showed on the scoreboard, the hard work of the likes of Corey Lyons (26 disposals and 12 clearances) rewarded.
PORT V NORWOOD Here’s a good quiz question. How many times have Port Adelaide and Norwood met through their long and proud histories as the SANFL’s bottom two sides? If you said ‘not many’ we’ll accept it. It’s something each of the great rivals will be looking to change in a hurry, starting with a victory at Alberton. New Magpies coach Tyson Goldsack was relieved his men broke through for their first win of the season in a huge game for the club – against West for the Russell Ebert Trophy

in Loxton. Port did the late, great Ebert proud by winning by 17 points, Goldsack delighted with the way his men had shown heart in the face of a lengthening injury list, which included big men Scott Lycett (back) and Jake Pasini (thigh) being sidelined by half-time. Talented forward Tom Scully won the Russell Ebert Medal after bagging four goals against the club he was drafted from. While the Redlegs may be battling to regain their mojo from last year’s stunning grand final triumph, Jack Oatey Medallist Harry Boyd continues to put it all on the line, leading the league for hit-outs (42 per game) and clearances (10). While Boyd stands tall against the odds, Norwood’s best may be coming sooner rather than later. Coach Jade Rawlings saw plenty of good signs as his men pushed Glenelg hard for three quarters before being beaten by 30 points, left to regret a scoreline of 2.7 early in the second term. With key players returning from injury – grand final matchwinner Matt Panos kicked three goals in the reserves last week – Rawlings remains hopeful his side can overcome its slow start and push towards the finals.
EAGLES V STURT Often it’s not how much you do, it’s what you do in the big moments. Sturt Magarey Medal hopeful Patrick Wilson didn’t have his biggest game in the Blues’ narrow
escape against Central – he was well held by the Bulldogs’ GWS recruit Leyton Chisholm – even though he kicked two crucial goals. However, his 14 touches won’t earn him Magarey votes. But when it really counted, he was there doing the hard stuff. He followed up an inspirational smother of Central ruckman Billy McCormack’s kick from the centre ball-up by charging downfield to left-foot the ball to Josh Hone, who turned and snapped the winning goal 18 minutes into the last quarter. The Blues, who had been kicking big scores and had led at every break in each of their first three wins for the season, had trailed against the Dogs by 12 points, 15 and four points after the first three quarters, not leading until the last term. It’s not the big wins coaches like most, rather the fighting ones against the odds, so Martin Mattner was satisfied with the “different way to win”. Tom Lewis had a staggering 14 clearances and 15 tackles as Sturt made it 15 wins from its past 16 clashes with Central. The Eagles, like South, will be glad to be back home, in their case for the first time this season as upgrades continue at Woodville Oval. They have lost three in a row but they were hugely competitive against North in a 16-point defeat and as their injury list starts to thin you just know they’ll be around the mark. sanfl.com.au

GREAT SCORE ON THE BOARD BY PETER ARGENT
Joseph Sinor has the ball in his sights in the Eagles’ 2021 grand final win against Glenelg.
Since he was a kid, Joseph Sinor has always been right at home at Woodville Oval, so it’s hardly surprising he is thriving as the Eagles’ new captain. A former scoreboard attendant at the ground with a lifetime passion for the Eagles, Sinor’s family lived on Glen Rowan Road, “so we were walking distance from Woodville Oval”. “Woodville-West Torrens had a special place in my heart as I grew up loving and supporting the Eagles,” said Sinor, whose boyhood heroes were the Eags’ inspirational midfielder Justin Cicolella and goalkicking forward Mark Passador. And nothing’s changed when it comes to his feelings about Woodville-West Torrens. “This club means the world to me.” He’s had some impressive mentors along the way who have pointed him in the right direction when it comes to leadership. “I’ve had strong mentors to play under as captains in Luke Thompson and Patty Guiffreda,” he said. “And (coach) Jade Sheedy has helped a lot as well – being a former SANFL captain and Magarey Medallist before coming across to us.” A former Henley junior, Sinor was a
captain of the Sharks through junior grades, along with being vicecaptain of the SA under-16s in 2010 – skipper was Melbourne premiership star Jack Viney. He played alongside Brodie Grundy, Ben Kennedy and current North Adelaide captain Alex Spina in that national campaign. Sinor has had to endure some difficult setbacks, starting with injuring his ACL in the first trial of his draft year in 2012 and having to miss the season. He played in the Eagles’ 2015 grand final loss to West Adelaide in just his seventh league game but missed selection for the 2016 decider against Sturt. For some time Sinor played in a club with a strong and successful culture that couldn’t quite achieve the ultimate. “After the grand final losses of 2015 and 2016, we went out in straight sets in 2017 and, while we won a final in 2018, we didn’t make the grand final,” he said. Then Sheedy arrived as coach and suddenly the Eagles took the final step. “The 2020 and ’21 premiership wins have been the highlight of my career,” Sinor said. “They were pretty sweet – and there was a lot of relief after the first win. The ’21 triumph
culminated what was a pretty complete season for us.” The Eagles connection could hardly be stronger as Sinor, 29, is married to Georgia, the daughter of West Torrens ruckman from the 1980s Chris Lindsay. They have two girls, two-year-old Macey and Lenni, who arrived a month ago. Sinor acknowledged the support he received from his family, including father Paul, who had a season with Woodville in the 1980s, along with a significant career with SMOSH, and his mother, Colleen, along with grandparents John and Noreen Fox. A handy junior cricketer, as a wicketkeeper-batsman with Woodville, before football took over, Sinor had to bide his time in the reserves, playing 68 games at that level before establishing himself in the league side. He vividly remembers his first senior game in 2014, the Eagles booting 24.19 and thumping North Adelaide by 76 points. “I played on the wing and can still remember my first kick,” said Sinor, an electrician by trade who has now played 110 league games. “I received the ball from Byron Sumner in the south-western pocket at Woodville Oval.” Where else? sanfl.com.au

HISTOR
A STEP BACK IN TIME – WOMEN AT THE FOOTY A lot has changed in our game over the past century, thankfully for the better. Neil J. Smith from the SANFL History Centre takes a journey back to when an afternoon at the football looked very different to what we experience today. Among the excellent photographic collection at the State Library of South Australia are some charming photos of women spectators at sporting events. There are stunning pictures depicting how women – and men – dressed up for their day out at the footy. Certainly different from today! A booklet When Women go to Football! was published in 1956. It includes a fixture of matches, a list of Magarey Medallists but the content is based on a couple of pages of verse, with this introduction: “It is said that women are more refined than men at Football Games. They do not barrack and shout as do men, but may have a friendly little argument between themselves…” The advice for women at the footy was:
There were plenty of women among the crowd at Unley Oval in 1923. Photo: State Library of South Australia PRG 280/1/41/90
With a Sotto Voce swear. Should her home-team be five points down, With but time-on to go, And they grab a mark two yards in front, Is she excited?… No!
When women go to football, They don’t barrack, they don’t shout, They just settle down upon the mound And bring their knitting out.
And if the mark be disallowed, Then loudly blows the siren, You’d never think to look at her She’s inwardly perspirin’!
They don’t go on like blokes I know, That take on all the mob, They might whisper to the lass in front, “Please, shut your ugly gob!”
But as she staggers homeward, Thinking Footie’s ‘up the pole’, There’s a righteous wrath that’s rising In her over-blasted soul.
You know the way some blokes go on. Struth! Are they one-eyed? But a woman. Ah!… she’s diff’rent, She’s quiet… and dignified. You never hear a woman Tell a player where to go; She reckons that’s the Captain’s job, And blimey! He should know. If she sees her hero handled In a way that’s most unfair, She’ll relieve her outraged feelings 8

They don’t barrack, they don’t shout, They just settle down upon the mound. And bring their knitting out She wasn’t “quiet…and dignified”. And she certainly didn’t bring her knitting out. But she was a great supporter. The umpires copped a fair bit but never more than Neil Kerley would have when he attempted to rough up her hero, ‘Big Bill’ Wedding. That would really get her going. I reckon she’d have been yelling at “the dirty, low-down brute!”
‘Tis then she’ll wring her hands and cry, “The dirty, low-down brute! And as for that d__umpire… I’d drown the flamin’ coot!” My own introduction to football was through my Aunty Bess, who was an avid Norwood supporter. She and her daughters would stand on the eastern terraces at Norwood Oval and, I can assure you, she didn’t heed the advice…

MOTHERS’ DAY BY PETER ARGENT
Right on cue, with Mother’s Day just a week away, a couple of mums and their sons are stepping into the spotlight at Prospect Oval. Sisters Melinda Rendell and Deb Madgen won’t exactly be seeing eye to eye as their boys Mitch Harvey and Jack Madgen will be opposed when North Adelaide tackles Adelaide. Harvey, the oldest son of Mel, who made a name for herself as an accomplished State League netballer, will be a key for the Roosters in ruck and up forward. Mel’s older sister Deb is the matriarch of the Madgen clan from Williamstown and her son Jack joined the Crows this season as their marquee player. Jack and Mitch’s mateship goes back to the early 2000s when Mel would come up to play and coach the Barossa District Netball Club. The boys continue a strong SANFL football heritage, as Deb and Mel’s brothers, Matthew, Tim and Steven Rendell all played league football with West Torrens. Ruck star Matt, before a stellar career with Fitzroy,
played 79 games for the Eagles, while Tim managed 15 matches and Steve played 44. While the mums were over on the netball courts at Williamstown and neighbouring Barossa and Gawler ovals, as young lads Jack and Mitch were kicking the footy around. Jack has started with the Crows in a forward role but he also can play as a key defender, where his direct opponent could be his cousin. In the season opener robust big man Mitch Harvey confirmed his durability by playing his 100th consecutive game for North, in a streak that goes back to 2017. He became just the second person in North’s history to play 100 league games in a row, along with Paul Kennett. The 198cm, 105kg Harvey, who was drafted to the Power in 2013, played in the 2018 North premiership, kicking three goals, but also has played in a couple of narrow grand final losses – Port Adelaide’s four-point defeat at the hands of Norwood in 2014 and last year’s one-point heartbreaker against the Redlegs.
There’s not really too much of a family feud going on here with Mel Rendell, Mitch Harvey and Jack and Deb Madgen.
Jack’s first dream was to become an elite basketballer. Back in 2010 he was playing senior colts and A-grade football for Barossa District during the day and then would go off to play ABA basketball with the Eastern Mavericks on a Saturday night. He had four years at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, before playing with Cairns Taipans in the NBL and Mount Gambier Pioneers in the SEABL. Madgen grabbed a rookie spot at Collingwood at the end of 2017 and made his AFL debut in 2018 against Sydney, starting off by standing Lance Franklin, no less. ‘Buddy’ suggested in a little banter Jack “should return to basketball”. The Crows are delighted Madgen ignored the ‘advice’ as he has quickly gained a reputation for his leadership, communication skills and ability to connect. Whatever the result of the Mothers’ Day meeting at Prospect, there’s little doubt both sons will do their mums proud. sanfl.com.au

The Electrifying 80s
OLD RIVALS AT IT AGAIN
Port Adelaide’s Brian Cunningham, Greg Phillips, Ivan Eckermann and Bruce Abernethy running a lap of honour with the 1980 premiership flag after a hard-fought grand final win against Norwood.
BY DION HAYMAN
The first year of the electrifying ’80s closed with an unforgettable grand final between the league’s oldest foes. Port Adelaide was an unstoppable juggernaut in 1980 boasting one of the greatest sides seen in SA. It lost just two games and drew one for the year and had buried Norwood by 108 points at Alberton in April on a day Tim Evans booted 9.2. The Redlegs were 6-9 after Round 15, two wins and percentage outside the five but lost only once more before grand final day. After three tough finals and facing this mighty Port team, few gave Norwood a chance. Even the late Russell Ebert reflected as much, telling Port Adelaide in a club video, “It was probably the closest side to unbeatable that I’ve played in. I knew Norwood would have to play at their absolute best to match us and I doubted whether over the whole game with the lead up and the injuries they had that they could match us for a whole game.” By the final siren, Port was relieved as much as anything. “Hundred per cent,” Bruce Abernethy remembered of the 18-point win. “We had everything to lose and after the game it was like, ‘well we got there, we deserved it. But that was a bit closer than we thought boys’.” This was the year the Australian flag was emblazoned on Football Park’s grandstand wing and the goalsquares were dressed up as Union Jacks. Norwood had first use of a hot, northerly wind and led 3.1 to 0.1 after just 10 minutes. The damage would have been greater had Greg Phillips not relieved the pressure with four defensive marks in the first quarter-hour. “He made ordinary defenders look good,” 10
sanfl.com.au
Abernethy said. “He was this unbelievable physical presence and even before he’d mark the ball, there’d be blokes running because they knew he’d get it.” Crucially, it was Phillips and wingman Kym Kinnear who played their part in turning the tide. Kinnear appeared not to have an opponent all day and seemed to operate as a second centreman. After Tim Evans booted Port’s first on 17 minutes, Kinnear and Phillips combined around the outer wing to set up Ebert, who took two bounces before sublimely slotting the Magpies’ second into the breeze. It was every bit the goal of a man who had just won his fourth Magarey Medal. Defences were on top for most of the day. A soccered goal to Evans seconds before the half-time siren gave Port the slenderest of leads but it would be his last contribution, having fractured and dislocated his left thumb in a marking attempt with Ian Stasinowsky. Similarly, Norwood couldn’t gain the buffer it so desperately needed in the 26C heat, leading by four points at the last break but leaving the Magpies to finish with last use of the wind. Again it was Kinnear who was instrumental with a 60m barrel that finished in the arms of Stephen Clifford, who regained the lead for
Port after two-and-a-half minutes. Seemingly metres in the clear at centre half-back, Graeme Dunstan took off but underestimated the speed and agility of 18-year-old Abernethy and was holding the ball. “Big Russell came up to me and said, ‘This is the most important kick of the game’,” Abernethy recalled. He didn’t miss and after a Clifford trademark snap from 35 metres, the Magpies had a 16-point lead and Norwood seemed spent. But Greg Turbill marked and goaled and when Roger Woodcock ghosted in for his second after 16 minutes, the margin was back to four points. It was, however, Norwood’s final punch. Mark Williams bustled the ball forward allowing an unchecked Greg Boyd to run onto a loose ball and Williams himself snapped the sealer – yet another Port goal with Kinnear’s DNA. He finished with 20 kicks and six handballs to be Port’s most prolific and damaging accumulator. Michael Taylor had 23 kicks and 15 handballs for the Legs and was a popular pick for best-onground. Ebert was Abernethy’s choice amid calls for a medal to be coined for the occasion, like the VFL’s Norm Smith Medal. By the following season, there would be one named after Jack Oatey and Ebert would win it.
ON THE MOVE BY PETER ARGENT
Glenelg captain Ellie Kellock celebrating with the SANFLW premiership trophy in 2021.
She played on SANFL Women’s first night and has created plenty of history along the way but this season will be Ellie Kellock’s swansong. Glenelg’s inspirational, hard-at-it captain played in the Tigers’ first game in 2017 as a 19-year-old against West Adelaide at The Parade – and recorded the club’s first tackle and booted a goal in its debut win. Elite women’s football arrived at just the right time for Kellock. “I was playing in the SAWFL competition for Morphettville Park, having enjoyed an under-18 and two senior flags with them,” she recalled. From a farm at Farrell Flat in the State’s mid north, halfway between Clare and Burra, Kellock, along with older brothers Samuel and Matthew and younger sister Annie, is part of a strong sporting family – three generation stalwarts of the Burra-Booborowie-Hallett Rams and foundation club Burra. Sam and Matt still play footy for the Rams and Annie has returned to playing netball this year. Dad,
Patrick Kitschke and Ellie Kellock at the 2022 SANFLW best and fairest night.
Greg, was still playing footy at 45, while Ellie’s grandfather, David ‘Elbows’ Kellock, is a life member of Burra Eagles. Ellie, Glenelg’s best-and-fairest winner in 2018 and the club’s first SANFLW premiership captain, having starred in the 2021 grand final win over West Adelaide, showers plenty of praise on flagwinning coach Jason Fairall for the opportunities she received and the leadership he brought to the club. “Along with Jason, my mum Jane has been an important mentor leadership-wise,” Kellock said. “She has a number of leadership roles in the farming community and local councils and I’d lean on her for advice and to discuss issues. “I still keep in contact with Jason, who now runs his own leadership program called High Performing Teams, which he founded.” Sadly for SANFLW fans Kellock says this will be her last season playing for the Bays. Her partner, paramedic Patrick Kitschke, the son of former Sturt and St Kilda ruckman Damian, has taken a post in far north Queensland. He will be
based in Townsville while working in Charters Towers. “I went up to see Patrick on the Gather Round bye weekend and ran water for the Curra Swans, the team I’ll play for in Townsville,” said Kellock, who has tallied the most kicks of any player in SANFLW’s seven-season history. “There is a five-team Aussie Rules competition in Townsville. “I decided to have the final season with Glenelg because it is a special group of girls I play alongside. With Lexi Edwards coming in as senior coach, I want to go out on my own terms, which means I have to endure a long-distance relationship with Patrick for a few months. “I want to continue to play consistent footy and the dream would be to go out as a dual premiership captain at Glenelg.” The star sportswoman who looked up to netball ace Natalie von Bertouch as a kid, because of her fierce competitiveness and strong leadership, now has a generation of aspiring footballers looking up to her as a role model and history-maker. sanfl.com.au

TORRENS UNIVERSITY SANFL U18 WRAP BY ZAC MILBANK | TWITTER @ZACMILBANK
BY ZAC MILBANK
A strong aerial display from South Adelaide propelled it to a 53-point Torrens University SANFL Under-18 win against West Adelaide at Hisense Stadium. Leading at every change, the Panthers moved the ball well by foot en route to registering 119 marks to the Bloods’ 71. Ruck Taylor Goad was an imposing figure in South’s victory, while team-mates Lachlan Hamilton (20 disposals) and Blake Rodrigues (23) were positive contributors. The Bloods were within striking distance at half-time but, ultimately, the efforts of Riley Hill, Jack Hutton and Will Patton (29 disposals, seven marks) weren’t enough to match the Panthers. Woodville-West Torrens overcame a goalless second term to grind out a 30-point win against North Adelaide at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval. Establishing an 18-point lead at the first break, the Eagles could only manage one more behind as they clung on to a 10-point advantage at the main change. But Shane Reardon’s charges held the Roosters to just one goal in the second half while piling on 4.7, Darcy Hudson, Jake Andrews and Tate Delmenico shining in the Eagles’ third win of 2023. North’s Tom Stevens was rated his side’s best performer, while Kane McAuliffe and Jed Dignan each collected 21 disposals. Not even inaccuracy prevented Sturt from holding off Central District by three points in a thriller at X Convenience Oval. Despite kicking one less goal than the Bulldogs, the Double Blues’ tally of 6.15 (51) was enough as the Dogs threatened to steal the win with a goal to William O’Brien in the 21st minute of the fourth quarter. Captain Georgie Pope led the way for the Blues,

while Ted Newman (17 disposals) and Kobee Dabinett (20) also made their presence felt. Bulldogs’ prime movers Tom Giles (29 disposals) and Mitch McDonald (26) just failed to haul their team across the line. Glenelg exploded after half-time to record a comfortable 46-point win against Norwood at The Parade. Battling hard to edge in front by just nine points at half-time, the Bays clicked into gear after the main break to bang on 7.9 while restricting the Redlegs to just 2.2. Tigers midfielder Lucas Camporeale, son of Carlton premiership wingman Scott Camporeale, enjoyed a day out registering 39 disposals and 10 marks, while twin brother Ben racked up 25 possessions. Norwood’s Jacob Jones ran tirelessly for his 26 disposals and eight tackles. sanfl.com.au

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS Here's SA's victorious U16 team after it beat WA in Perth, to make it two wins from two to become No. 1 in the land. SA's girls, coached by Bek McMahon, had beaten Victoria Metro 8.5 to 2.9 at Arden Street in Melbourne before heading to Perth, where they conquered WA 9.8 to 5.3 on April 30. SA's MVP went to captain Sophie Eaton, from Central District. Eloise Mackareth booted four goals against WA, while Charlie Hazelhurst was best-afield in the win against the Vics.
