STANDING TALL BY PETER CORNWALL

It’s been his second home – it probably felt like his actual home plenty of the time – for 50-odd years, so it seems only right his name will adorn Elizabeth Oval for the next 50-plus. The Kris Grant Stand is a thoroughlydeserved honour for a remarkable and much-loved servant of Central District Football Club. In fact, it’s almost impossible to think of the Bulldogs without the former player/ secretary/general manager/chief executive coming straight to mind. Bulldogs legend John Platten described Grant as “the backbone of our football club”, describing him as “the frontline soldier fighting to make Central great”. “I’m pretty proud this footy club has been something for the northern region to hang on to and been something very positive for them,” Grant said. And the Elizabeth home of the Dogs sure is something for all their fans – and the SANFL as a whole – to be proud of.

The naming of the Kris Grant Stand comes after a raft of infrastructure upgrades with City of Playford Council having transformed the Doggies’ home ground. The new white picket fence immediately lifts its look, while the most significant improvement comes with three unisex changerooms, the purposebuilt facilities catering for the boom in female footy. And Central’s women’s team is coming on in leaps and bounds. Then there are the ends named in honour of the Gowans twins, James and Chris, who, along with their old mate Grant, contributed hugely to the Bulldogs becoming SANFL’s powerhouse club when it won nine premierships from 12 grand finals in 12 years at the start of the 21st Century. Until Grant retired at the end of last season he had been club chief for 44 years. While there’s no way you would be able to keep Kris away – he still attends Bulldogs training

sessions – the Central great was a little embarrassed by the attention of having the stand named in his honour. Bulldogs president David Cavenett said there was no-one more deserving. “It goes against Kris’ grain to have a grandstand named after him. It took some convincing – he’s extremely humble,” he said. Grant felt “honoured and humbled” but said, “people who know me know I don’t like to be at the forefront”. Maybe our great mate will have to sit at the back of his own stand!

Making our mark.

A MIGHTY TRADITION BY ROBERT LAIDLAW

Anzac Day is possibly the most revered day on the Australian calendar. And it will be a typically emotion-charged occasion when Norwood and North Adelaide clash at The Parade as they continue a wonderful SANFL tradition that dates back to 1948 with a rematch between the previous year’s grand finalists. Anzac Day originated in World War I on 25 April 1915 with the landing of Allied troops, including the Anzacs – the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps – at Gallipoli, Turkey, where they faced impossible odds. The poorly-planned Gallipoli campaign was destined to be unsuccessful and, after horrific early carnage, a stalemate developed through the rest of 1915. About 8700 Australians and 2700 New Zealanders died. On 25 April 1916, Anzac Day was officially recognised, in remembrance of the fallen soldiers at Gallipoli while, after World War II and other battles, the day recognises all those who served and sacrificed their lives in military operations. Anzac tradition includes the ideals of courage, endurance and mateship, also important factors in playing the great sport of Australian football. Aussie Rules games were played in Europe through World War I, including at Heliopolis – now part of Cairo – in Egypt in December 1915, when the 4th Reinforcements to the 27th Battalion beat the 5th Reinforcements 6.15 to 4.7. At the end of World War I, 6000 Australians took part in a march through London streets on Anzac Day 1919, with a footy match played at the end of proceedings. While, to start with, fancy dress football games were included as part of SA’s Anzac Day festivities, the first two significant games were played in 1920 at Adelaide Oval. The Light Horse tackled the 50th Battalion, with the Light Horse victorious 8.14 to 6.6. The Daily Herald report stated, “although the men were not in the peak of condition they gave a capital exposition of football”. The ‘gallants’ of the famous 10th and 27th Battalions faced off in the second game. “The men on each side worked like veritable Trojans and they were encouraged by the calls of the onlookers,” the Herald noted. The 27th Battalion won 6.9 to 4.10. Annually, country centres and RSL clubs held charitable football games on April 25 each year before the first SANFL game in recognition of Anzac Day was played in 1948. The clash between the previous season’s grand finalists, West Adelaide and Norwood, was played on the holiday Monday at Adelaide Oval. The Advertiser reported: “Half the proceeds of today’s league football match will be devoted to the RSL Distress Fund. To protect the gate against the possibility of rain affecting the attendance, the Football League and RSL each have taken out a rain insurance policy of £500.” As it turned out, it was a perfect day for 4

football, especially if you were a Norwood fan, as the Red and Blues reversed the previous year’s grand final result. The next Anzac Day SANFL game was played in 1954, when premier West Torrens faced ’53 runner-up Port Adelaide and a rematch of the previous season’s grand final has been enshrined as a tradition pretty much ever since. Over the past two years there have been two Anzac Day games decided by less than a goal, the Eagles beating North Adelaide by three points in 2021 and Glenelg edging out the Eagles by five points last season, both games played at Woodville Oval. Previously, there has not been a game won by less than a goal since it happened on five occasions between 1959-66. Port drew with Glenelg in controversial circumstances in 1982 and in 2012 Central beat the Eagles by six points. From 1954-62, Port beat West in all five grand finals between the rivals, three by less than a kick. But the Red and Blacks won the three Anzac Day clashes between the teams in that period – by four points, four points and one point. Norwood and North this week meet on Anzac Day for the fourth time, the Roosters having been victorious in 1961 and 2014, while the Redlegs won in 2019. Norwood has featured in 15 Anzac Day games, for seven wins, while North was victorious in just two of nine – both against the Redlegs.

MATCH PREVIEWS BY PETER CORNWALL

CENTRAL V ADELAIDE Bulldogs coach Paul Thomas predicted pre-season his rebuilt side just needed to “kick two more goals and stop two more goals a game” to make the quantum leap from a four-win season to playing finals. “The numbers suggest we are not far away,” he said. The numbers from Central’s most recent game, the tough test against premiership fancy North Adelaide, indicate just how justified Thomas’s hopes were of leaping up the ladder. The Doggies last season averaged 62 points for and 80 against. Against the Roosters they scored 67 points. And conceded just 40. Their losses to North last year had been 67-110 and 79-117. It’s a huge step in the right direction that clearly wasn’t that far away. With outstanding recruiting – Dale Pearce and Hugo Munn were dangerous as key forwards and Brinn Little and desperate, rebounding Jez McLennan were outstanding from the back half – and quickly out of the blocks to kick the first five goals of the game against the Roosters, Central showed its intent to end its five-year finals drought. After keeping North to just five goals 6

there’s another big test, against a Crows side averaging 100-plus points this year after last season topping the ton 11 times. Adelaide’s ability to kick a quick run of goals is always a concern and it was a barrage of seven unanswered goals either side of three-quarter-time that proved the difference after West Adelaide had taken the game right up to it. Midfielders Matt Crouch (37 disposals) and Jackson Hately (36) got right on top, making the most of the ruck supremacy of Kieran Strachan (47 hit-outs and 22 possessions). And the experience and leadership of former Collingwood defender Jack Madgen came to the fore with his back-toback majors late in the third quarter handing the Crows the lead.

WEST V SOUTH After the Panthers kicked off the season with a strong win against Central, there was a feeling we would learn more about whether or not they were the real deal when they took on the Eagles, who had crunched premier Norwood in Round 1. Well, it’s pretty clear now. After conceding the first three goals, South showed why coach Jarrad Wright believes the sky is the limit

this year by booting the next seven goals and proceeding to win ‘ugly’ by 11 points in a low-scoring slug in tricky conditions. Mitch O’Neill (26 disposals) was outstanding, while former Brisbane on-baller Ely Smith also had 26 possessions, key defender Sam Skinner hauled in 10 marks and ruckman Keegan Brooksby was dominant with 37 hit-outs and seven clearances. It was the sort of resilient win against quality opposition that shows you’re heading in the right direction. Close wins are critical, too, after South learnt the hard way last year how close losses can derail your season. Wright won’t need any reminding about the danger West Adelaide presents. The Bloods edged South out in one of those costly results last year by five points in Round 17 and there’s absolutely no doubt Adam Hartlett’s men are rapidly improving in 2023. Hartlett took plenty of positives in the way his young side took it right up to a strong Adelaide outfit, leading until time-on in the third quarter. Indeed, the opening quarter was footy how Hartlett wants it played – “pressure on the source, good defensive structure and building offence off

A storm was coming as Port Adelaide made a charge at Glenelg to take the lead in the third quarter but Liam McBean and the Bays steadied for a crucial win. Photo: Gordon Anderson

the back of that”. With a group of inexperienced players, maintaining concentration and sufficient pressure for the full two hours is always a challenge and the Crows’ burst from late in the third quarter to early in the last proved a bridge too far. But it appears the Bloods aren’t that far away. Joel Stevens stood up in the midfield with 31 touches and Callum Park and Tom Morrish rebounded strongly off half-back, while Sam Frost showed plenty on debut as the Bloods continue to try to close the gap between their best and their worst.

STURT V PORT The Blues’ defence was a big tick. The star-studded midfield, absolutely. Ruck depth looked good. But the question footy fans were asking in the build-up to the SANFL season was who would kick the goals so Marty Mattner’s men could take the next step from finalists to a top-three team and premiership threat. If your answer was Steven Slimming, 10 out of 10, top of the class. And what are this week’s winning X-Lotto numbers? Sturt booted an imposing 16.10 (106) in the wet against last year’s miserly premier Norwood to show kicking a winning score is no worry, Slimming, who last year kicked four goals in 18 games, booting a stunning 5.0. The feisty left-footed 2017 premiership wingman has adopted more of a forward role with Marty Frederick and Charlie Parker on the wings and looked the part in a powerhouse Sturt performance inspired by Tom Lewis’s 28 disposals, 12 clearances and 16 tackles. Port showed plenty in a fighting loss at the Bay. But, having dominated the third quarter and regaining the lead it had held early by booting the first two goals of the game, coach Tyson Goldsack would have been disappointed his men couldn’t take that momentum into

the last quarter, beaten by 17 points in a spirited contest. But there were plenty of good signs from Trent Dumont, Jed Hagan, Jase Burgoyne and Riley Bonner, while Sam Hayes and Dante Visentini gave the Magpies’ midfield first look at the ball, winning 66 hit-outs between them.

GLENELG V EAGLES After opening up with an inconsistent effort against the Blues, with patches of strong, imposing footy interspersed with lapses in concentration and discipline, the Bays were aiming for a more consistent, four-quarter performance and came close against Port. Lachie Hosie was huge in the first half, with five of the total nine goals from both sides, and finished with six, while the Tigers finished strongly with the game on the line with scores level at threequarter time. Liam McBean, with two of his three goals for the game, Hosie and Luke Reynolds kicked the first four goals of the final term to put the game away. Winning the forward-50 count 64-41 to show how many chances they created, the Bays played the hard, committed football needed to overcome their old rival, skipper Max Proud leading the way with 11 marks and eight rebound-50s. The Eagles, despite a growing injury list, will be another tough test for the Tigers. They failed to make the most of their chances in a costly first quarter with the breeze at Noarlunga, kicking 3.5 to South’s 1.1. The Panthers booted five straight

to 0.1 in the second quarter and, with Dane McFarlane carried from the field with a season-ending knee injury and premiership captain Luke Thompson suffering a suspected fractured cheekbone, it was always going to be hard from there. While Mitch Hardie – who, with 65 touches in two games is only behind Crow Matt Crouch (67) in the league – and James Rowe were again outstanding in the midfield, the Eagles were overwhelmed in the air and they will be wanting to improve their clearance work, beaten 30-36.

NORWOOD V NORTH Before the season kicked off, everyone was talking about these sides as premiership favourites and, fair enough, last year’s magnificent grand final battle was still fresh in the mind. Now it seems a distant memory. Premier Norwood, which in the minor round last season only once lost by more than 15 points (against Sturt by 28 in Round 5), has had its score doubled in successive weeks, losing to the Eagles by 46 points and the Double Blues by 53. In a tight competition, clearly that needs to be turned around in a hurry. But the Roosters will be desperate for that not to happen in the Anzac Day grand final rematch. Firstly, there’s the memory of the heartbreaking one-point loss in the premiership decider, then there’s the fact Jacob Surjan’s men will not want to be 1-2 after three rounds, having copped a wake-up call in their 27-point loss against Central. sanfl.com.au

BIG GINGER KICK

SMOOTH SPICED RUM NEW

THE BULLDOGS’ BAROMETER BY PETER ARGENT

Katelyn Rosenzweig, a key target in attack at the Ponderosa, is one of SANFLW’s great characters. ‘Rosey’ Rosenzweig, Central District’s exuberant and extraverted forward, is still just 22, despite kicking off her SANFLW career in Round 2 of the inaugural 2017 season. And she made it to the magical 50-game milestone when she kicked a couple of majors in the Bulldogs’ stunning 32-point win against South Adelaide in Round 4. Playing 50 SANFLW games is effectively the equivalent to being a 100-game men’s footballer, Rosenzweig believes. “Sladey (eight-time Central District premiership star Matthew Slade), who was the inaugural North Adelaide women’s coach, made me emergency for the first round back in 2017,” said Rosenzweig, who started out as a full back. “I played every other game for the rest of that year, including the grand final at Unley against Norwood. “The next year he moved me up forward and I was the competition’s leading goalkicker. I did play in Central District’s first

game – the Friday night match to start the 2019 season against West.” Football started for Rosenzweig at Hamley Bridge as a nine-yearold in the under-14 boys’ competition and she played at that level until 15, developing her love for the code. “My Dad, Leroy (Rosenzweig) and Uncle Brett and Ben (Burgess) as the coach played in a premiership for Hamley Bridge in 2008,” Katelyn said. “I remember the excitement of being carried around on Dad’s shoulders in the lap of honour after that Bombers (reserves) flag. I was hooked from there and just wanted to feel that euphoria for myself.” As a 15-year-old Rosenzweig spent two seasons with the Angle Vale Owls in the SAWFL, before receiving an email to try out at North. She has been through a myriad of ups and downs along the journey. “I was drafted to the Crows in 2018 and was with them for the ’18 and ’19 seasons,” Rosenzweig said. “In an exhibition match at Alberton Oval, between the Crows and Port academies I fractured my spine in

a marking contest, after I had my legs taken from under me. “I played in 2020 but in a lot of pain and, at the end of 2021, preparing for the ’22 campaign, I ruptured my ACL in an internal trial, which meant I missed all of last year. The Round 1 game this year against the Eagles was my first match back after the ACL.” A strong-marking forward with a physical presence, Rosenzweig is often seen as a barometer of her team. Rosenzweig, who as a youngster had Andrew McLeod, Kurt Tippett and Patrick Dangerfield as her heroes, spoke about Emma Gibson at the SANFL, along with coaches Matthew Slade at North and Shaun Ribbons at Elizabeth as being strong mentors. She is keen to have another crack at AFLW but equally important for her is to be involved in finals football with the Bulldogs. Rosenzweig has made quite a name for herself across the first six years of SANFLW, selected in the Team of the Year while at the Roosters in 2018 and in 2020-21 with Central District. But there’s little doubt the future is rosy too. sanfl.com.au

HISTOR

HIGH-FLYING FOOTY ACE BY PETER CORNWALL

Airline pilot Allan Crabb at the controls in 1950.

Footy and War hero Allan Crabb leads the Tigers out onto Glenelg Oval to the cheers of his adoring fans.

Allan Crabb was a ‘hero’ to the Glenelg faithful as a superstar ruckman from the early 1940s to the mid ’50s. In between he was a hero on a much larger scale. A flying ace who became a war hero. While Port Adelaide great Bob Quinn deservedly is remembered with the utmost respect as a medallist on the footy field and in World War II and has the medal for best-afield in the Anzac Day grand final rematch named in his honour, the heroic feats of Crabb deserve to be recognised in a similar manner. Dashing, athletic, skilful, tough, courageous and the ultimate team 10

sanfl.com.au

man on the footy field, he was modest off it, a gentleman, loved by Tigers fans, admired and respected by everyone else. An authoritative voice on footy as a broadcaster and writer after his outstanding 200-game career, in which he won a Magarey Medal and was runnerup for another. Having enlisted in the RAAF as a 19-year-old determined to fight for his country and the British Empire, Crabb flew bombers in World War II. And he flew with distinction, courage and honour, awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross after taking part in two tours of duty.

Crabb was very much in the mould of another dashing sportsman of the era, Keith Miller, one of the greatest cricket allrounders of all time and one of the most popular members of Don Bradman’s 1948 team of ‘Invincibles’. Crabb is player No. 271 on Glenelg’s Wall of Fame, having debuted in 1942 for the West-Glenelg wartime combine. Miller is player No. 276, starring with that side in the finals of ’42 while training at an Air Force station at Mallala, before he, too, fought the Germans in the air over Britain. While the War was horrific, it is hard not to think with a touch of romance

of the likes of Crabb and Miller taking part in battles that played a major role in saving the free world. Crabb grew up in tough times. Born in 1923, just two years after Glenelg had made its A-grade football debut, he had only just begun school when the hardships of the Great Depression hit. His father, Allan Stanley Crabb, had enlisted in the 8th Infantry Battalion in 1915 and fought at Gallipoli. It was fortunate – for his family and SA footy – he returned from the War, unlike so many other young Australians, but the injuries he suffered led to his early death in 1941, when Allan was 18. By that time Australia had been thrown headlong into the Second World War. Crabb joined the RAAF, enlisting on 20 June 1942 and training at Parafield Airport. He was in England during 1943, 1944 and most of 1945 with the RAF 102 Squadron, flying Halifax bombers. The four-engined propeller-driven heavy bomber was strongly built but was not easy to control, especially attempting to manoeuvre out of trouble, and could not fly as high as enemy planes, suffering more than its share of casualties. Just to get one of these giant bombers – the Halifax had a wingspan of almost 32 metres, was 22 metres long and was held together by some 750,000 rivets – up and flying sounds frightening but Crabb incredibly took part in 42 raids over Germany. The 102 squadron was renowned for flying night sorties and you can only marvel at the skill and courage of Crabb and his crew – in the Halifax bombers the crew consisted of the pilot, navigator, flight engineer, wireless operator, bomb aimer and three gunners – as they flew out time and again unsure if this might be their last flight, caught in huge multiple searchlights from below and bombarded with flak fire, seeing mates around them hit and crashing in flames from the sky. His citation for winning the DFC read: Flight Lieutenant Crabb has completed numerous operations against the enemy in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty. Crabb never skipped a beat between his War service and football, playing

five games at the end of the 1945 season and between early 1946 and ’52 incredibly stringing together 106 successive games. That was despite Tigers coach of the early ’50s Johnny Taylor revealing the difficulties Crabb had overcome to become an SA football great, saying he had lost a kidney after being injured in the War. “He had one kidney removed and he played league football with one kidney... that’s how big a heart he had,” Taylor said. “Whoever was close enough when he was going for a mark used to have to be at least a yard behind him and when he was flying for a ball you’d fly too, to protect his back so no-one could get their knee into it. He was a great ruckman and great clubman.” Crabb had first made an impact in SA footy in 1941, when he won the Tomkins Medal for best and fairest in the colts competition. By 1949, Glenelg’s captain and best-andfairest winner, he was as big a star as anyone in league ranks. His finest personal season came to a sudden end in the last minor-round game, forced by illness to move to a forward pocket after a brilliant first quarter, The Advertiser noting: “Crabb was violently ill in the second term and kept going until half-time by sheer willpower.” He was rushed to hospital, possibly costing him the Magarey Medal. Crabb tied on 18 votes with North’s Ron Phillips but lost it on a countback. The Medal no longer is decided on a countback – players are jointly awarded medals if there is a tie. With the Medal celebrating its centenary in 1998 it was decided the 11 players who had missed out on countbacks would be awarded retrospective medals.

Crabb’s late Magarey Medal was much deserved – unfortunately, he had died in 1982, aged just 58. Crabb in 1950 helped the Tigers into the grand final but it was another year of so-near-yet-so-far as Norwood won the premiership decider and Crabb again finished runner-up for the Magarey, polling 16 votes to North captain Ian McKay’s 20. Crabb’s polling was remarkable considering he missed training at the Bay for nine weeks because of his work as a commercial airline pilot. Crabb had joined Ansett-ANA in 1945 and transferred to Airlines of SA in 1960, flying DC3, DC4, F27 and CV440 planes and completing 19,000 flying hours before being appointed Ansett operations manager. Crabb represented SA with distinction, playing 20 State games. He starred in a famous six-point win against Victoria in 1951, chosen as SA’s best by Victorian officials and awarded the Thomas O’Halloran Trophy. That year he was named in an all-star national side selected by the magazine Sporting Life, the precursor to All-Australian selection. A renowned gentleman off the field, Crabb was one of SA footy’s toughest players. Crabb clearly relished the rough-and-tumble of the footy field. Norwood’s 1951 Magarey Medallist John Marriott rated him his hardest opponent. “Buster had more points on his elbows and knees than any player I knew,” he said. TORRENS UNIVERSITY SANFL U18 WRAP

BY ZAC MILBANK

ROUND 3 Five goals in a 10-minute purple patch propelled South Adelaide to a 13-point Torrens University SANFL Under-18 win against Woodville-West Torrens at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval. The Panthers pounced early in the third quarter as high-flying forward Jack Delean earned the lead with the second of his three majors in the fourth minute. By the midway mark of the quarter, the visitors had skipped out to a 26-point advantage on the back of Delean’s third. A six-goal masterclass from Sturt excitement machine Jasper Maher catapulted his side to a 62-point win against Norwood at Wigan Oval. Smooth-moving midfielder Loch Rawlinson (27 disposals, two goals) and Kobee Dabinett (21 disposals, nine clearances) were also major factors in the Blues’ rout. A fast start proved pivotal in Glenelg’s 12-point victory against West Adelaide at Stratarama Stadium. Booting two goals in the opening three minutes, the Tigers added a second to livewire forward Ashton Moir to open up a 20-point lead at

the first change. Conor Gluyas (22 disposals) led the way for the Bays, while West was well served by Will Patton (21). North Adelaide had Central District under the pump early before holding on for a seven-point win at X Convenience Oval. Kicking the first five goals – three via Kalan Caputo – the Roosters claimed a match-defining 27-point advantage at the first change. Central forward Liam Fawcett closed the gap to seven points with his third goal in the 21st minute of the last term but that would be the final score. ROUND 4 Norwood moved to a 3-1 win-loss record with a fighting seven-point win against Woodville-West Torrens at Woodville. The Redlegs were forced to work hard in the last term to stave off an Eagles comeback inspired by Patrick Weckert, who booted two of his four goals in the final term to cut the deficit to one point. But Redleg Will Rowlands, who finished with 22 disposals, had other ideas as he booted his matchwinning third major. A sensational seven-goal second

term set up Glenelg’s 43-point win against South at Flinders University Stadium. Leading by 13 points at the first change, the Tigers put on the afterburners to boot seven goals without a miss while restricting the Panthers to 1.2 in the second quarter. Bays playmaker James Dutton led the charge with 16 disposals, seven marks and five goals, while the Panthers’ prime midfielder Sid Draper earned 27 disposals. Central’s Trent Tattoli was a driving force behind his team’s comfortable 65-point win against West Adelaide at Hisense Stadium. Tattoli amassed 39 disposals, 12 marks, four tackles and four clearances while also booting two goals. Sam Burbridge (29 disposals) flew the flag for the Bloods. Sturt’s staying power was a key to its come-from-behind seven-point win against North at Prospect. Goalsneaks Ben Spehr and Connor Mills booted consecutive majors in time-on of the last quarter to snatch the premiership points. Kobee Dabinett played a crucial role in the win with 22 disposals and eight clearances, while North’s Jed Dignan had 23 touches. sanfl.com.au
