Volume 23, Issue 1

DIRECTOR’S UPDATE Best wishes in the New Year. I am eager to start 2015 as the new Executive Director of Sandusky Library. I began my library career at Sandusky Library in 1985. I was the Assistant Director, Community Relations, in 1992 until 1995, when I became the Library Director of Bellevue Public Library. I am enthusiastic to be returning ‘home’! The progress of our current remodeling projects is very exciting. Children’s Services will take on a new look when the “Dive Into Reading” Early Literacy Center is complete. The Library is fortunate to have the generous support of local foundations. This project would not be possible without funds provided by The Randolph J. and Estelle M. Dorn Foundation, The Frost-Parker Foundation, The Mylander Foundation, The Sam S. and Rose Stein Foundation, and the Erie County Foundations’ Council of The Erie County Community Foundation. Additionally, work continues on our new Digital Media Studio, which will feature a capture studio with a green screen, a recording studio, an editing studio, and the equipment and software needed to allow residents to get creative with video, music, graphic design, and more. The Norbert A. Lange and Marion Cleaveland Lange Trust made a generous donation to the Library for construction of the studio. Completion of these two projects is expected by early spring. An open house featuring the new areas will be announced at a later date. Our newest Little Free Library, sponsored by Murray & Murray, LPA, is located in the church yard on North Water Street in Castalia (pictured right). The other three Little Free Libraries are in the following locations: the SPARC bus stop next to the Merry-Go-Round Museum on Jackson Street, near the gazebo in Facer Park on Shoreline Drive (Sandusky), and near the large playground and Shelter #2 at Osborn MetroPark (Perkins). I look forward to meeting you when you visit the Library, and I hope you take a few minutes to stop by the “Meet and Greet” on February 10.

Molly Carver, Executive Director

Judy Kuns, Library Board Trustee and Little Free Library steward, stands next to the Castalia Little Free Library. For more information about LFL, visit littlefreelibrary.org.

Family Place Libraries™ Program: Play. Learn. Grow. Thursdays, March 12, 19, 26, April 2, 9 / 10:15 a.m.

Sandusky Library began the process to become a Family Place Library in the fall of 2013. Family Place Libraries’ cornerstone is to look at the role of public libraries as community centers and key players in family and early childhood development, parent and community involvement, and lifelong learning beginning at birth. Library staff members Lindsey Levinsohn, Children’s Services Manager, and Tiffany Hemmer, Family Place Coordinator, attended training in New York to learn Family Place Libraries™ principles to implement them at Sandusky Library. A generous donation from Randolph J. and Estelle M. Dorn Foundation provided funding for the training. The hallmark of Family Place is a five-week series of programs that brings together toddlers and their parents in an informal early childhood setting filled with toys, art activities, and books while encouraging parents to play with their children and meet other parents and caregivers. Professionals from local health and human service organizations will move casually around the room and chat informally with participants and answer child development questions. The focus will be on early intervention, strategies for healthy child development, and early literacy. While you’re at the program, check out our new Family Place materials (kid translation = toys). Refreshments will be provided. FREE transportation will be provided to those attending the program through the Sandusky Transit System. The Erie County Foundations’ Council of the Erie County Community Foundation is providing the funding for the transportation vouchers. Information on obtaining a voucher will be provided closer to the date of the program. (Ages 1-3 years; siblings under 5 are welcome.)

Services to Perkins Residents via the Pirate Bookshelf Perkins High School Principal Dean Stanfield wanted to place library books and online resources into the hands of his students. With the approval of the Perkins Local Schools Board of Education, Stanfield approached the Library last summer. His idea was that, through a courier service provided by the schools, library materials could be delivered to high school students. Because the Library cannot offer services only to students, the final product is the Pirate Bookshelf. During the school year, any resident in Perkins Township may place a hold on a Library item (in person, over the phone, or online) and choose to have the item delivered to Perkins High School for pick-up. To make returning the materials easier, a book/video drop has been placed in front of the office entrance of Perkins High School on Campbell Street. Another of Mr. Stanfield’s goals was for every high school student to have a Sandusky Library card and be familiar with the Library’s online resources. Early in the school year, Library staff visited the high school to sign up students for library cards. In the late fall, Lori Esposito, Coordinator, Communications & Public Relations, visited each of the high school English classes to show the students how to place holds, use the CLEVNET databases, and access free digital downloads: Hoopla (streaming video, music, and audiobooks), OverDrive Media Console (eBooks, music, audiobooks, and streaming video), and Zinio (digital magazines you can keep).

Library staff member Joe Pohorence assists a student at Perkins High School in signing up for a Library card.

The Pirate Bookshelf is available to all residents in Perkins Township. The Library’s free digital downloads are available to all Sandusky Library cardholders.
