Winter/Spring 2018 Summer 2019

Volume27, 26,Issue Issue21 Volume

DIRECTOR’S UPDATE: We are excited to launch programs this summer tied to the theme A Universe of Stories. Libraries across Ohio are celebrating summer reading and learning in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing. Inside this issue you will find events, book discussions, and exhibits on topics of space exploration and flight. We are thrilled to collaborate with other entities to make this summer a success. The Library will bring the exhibit Bessie Coleman & “Her Daughters”: African American Women Who Broke Barriers to Make Air and Space History and a live performance by Gigi Coleman, Bessie’s great-niece, thanks to grant funding from the WightmanWieber Charitable Foundation. We are extremely grateful to Sandusky Chapters of these organizations – NAACP, National Council of Negro Women, and Zonta – and Sandusky City Schools for partnering with us to bring this exhibit and program. We are delighted to partner with Sandusky City Schools for providing access to the Frohman Planetarium for the Library’s Fun Fridays program. Dr. Eugene Sanders, Chief Executive Officer and Superintendent, wrote, “I want to express my enormous excitement about the potential of our newly fostered partnership with the Sandusky Library. In light of this partnership, SCS will align our student summer learning efforts to increase student participation in the programming offered through the Sandusky Library, in step with the launch of our district’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) educational vision. I’m happy to share that the newly-renovated Planetarium will serve as a catalyst for supporting the Sandusky Library’s summer learning programming; we are elated to provide access to the general public and surrounding districts’ students to visit and learn in this state-of-the art facility.”

Molly Carver, Executive Director

In February the Library adopted a fine-free policy on materials returned late. The intent of the new policy is to remove a potential barrier to using the Library when late returns cannot be avoided and fines are too high. Last year the Library initiated automatic renewals on library materials, which helped reduce the number of late items by renewing items internally whenever possible. Please note, replacement fees for items long overdue will be removed once items are returned. No longer worry about overdue fines. Please bring items back for others to share!

On Earth Day, April 22, the Library removed single use plastic bags from its checkout desks. We encourage you to bring your own reusable book bag. Reusable Sandusky Library bags are available for $1.00. Alternative free bags are available upon request.

The exhibit is on loan from the International Women’s Air & Space Museum and will be on display during the month of June. Bessie Coleman was the first African American and Native American woman to receive her pilot’s license. Because no one would teach her in the United States, she traveled to France for her training. Though her life was short-lived, Bessie has inspired generations of African American female pilots and astronauts. In addition to the exhibit, Gigi Coleman, great-niece of Bessie Coleman, will present The Life and Times of Bessie Coleman: The World’s First African American Female Pilot. Gigi portrays the story of her Great-Aunt Bessie to encourage individuals to achieve their dreams. She also inspires youth to be interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through her aviation program – The Bessie Coleman Aviation All-stars (BCAA). Its mission is to expose disadvantaged youth to career opportunities in the field of aviation. A panel discussion and a reception will follow Gigi’s performance.
