DIRECTOR’S UPDATE: OHIO LIBRARY LEGISLATIVE DAY: LIBRARIES TRANSFORM Library advocates traveled to Columbus for Ohio Library Legislative Day at the Statehouse on March 29. Library supporters from Ohio Senate District 2 met with Senator Randy Gardner (pictured right, top), and supporters from House District 89 met with Representative Steve Arndt (pictured right, bottom). Library representatives delivered two messages to legislators: We urged legislators to “Protect the PLF” (Public Library Fund) for libraries at the current level of 1.7% of the General Revenue Fund. Preserving the PLF requires an amendment to the Governor’s budget proposal, which would cut library funding. The General Assembly (House and Senate) will hold hearings and debate the state budget between now and the end of June. We reminded legislators that Ohioans value their public libraries. Libraries are good investments of state tax dollars, returning $5 to the public for every $1 spent. We know “Libraries Transform” the lives of all Ohioans through early literacy and workforce development, as well as enrichment opportunities for families and retirees. We are grateful for past support to libraries from local legislators and enlist their support in the current budget. When you see Senator Randy Gardner or Representative Steve Arndt, please thank them and remind them to protect library funding, and share a story about the importance of the library in your life and the life of the community. Molly Carver, Executive Director “WELCOME BABY” BOOKS

Rotary Club volunteers Kitty and Steve Smith assembled “Welcome Baby” packets to be distributed to parents of newborns at Firelands Regional Medical Center. Newborns receive a gift book and their parents receive information about library services and the importance of early literacy development. “Welcome Baby” is a collaboration of Sandusky Library, Rotary Club of Sandusky, and Firelands Regional Medical Center.

LIBRARIES TRANSFORM...

...because of you. How has the Library transformed your life? Stop in and fill out a notecard (pictured right) and share your story with us. You may also print a notecard and mail it to the Library. Look for the notecard on our website homepage.

“You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end, each of us must work for our own improvement and, at the same time, share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty being to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful.” Marie Curie

Join us this summer as we Build a Better World at the Library with our Summer Reading Program. Events will explore creating a better world through all facets of life: personal wellness, conservation of resources, and healthy environment. We are pleased to have received a grant through the State Library of Ohio to sponsor Not a Drop to Drink, a program series about the importance of a healthy water supply. We look forward to Building a Better World with you at the Library this summer!
