DIRECTOR’S UPDATE As we head into 2016, I am pleased to share a few updates from last year: Sandusky Library received special recognition in October when it was designated as a Family Place Library following a visit from the office of the national coordinator. Family Place Libraries™ must meet several criteria. To qualify a library must be a center for early childhood information, parent education, emergent literacy, socialization, and family support. New services at Sandusky Library contributing to our certification include offering family centered programs, having a parent collection, and providing interactive play opportunities in Children’s Services. Additionally, the Library received the Opening Doors Award for early intervention from the Erie County Board of Developmental Disabilities at its annual dinner in October. The Library’s new initiative for early literacy intervention, Play.Learn.Grow., launched in 2015, was a key factor in receiving this distinction for reaching young families with and without disabilities. The Play.Learn.Grow. program series continues this spring. The Mylander Foundation awarded the Library a grant in support of a special program series, Election Reflections, for 2016. Election Reflections is planned in honor of the Presidential election year. Thanks to additional funding, this special series will feature guest speakers and reenactors from across the State of Ohio. The series will begin in February on Presidents’ Day weekend and continue through the November election.

Sandra Feinberg from Family Place Libraries™ presented a banner for display. Look for the Family Place Libraries™ logo on books, materials, and programs that support families with the goal of having their children enter school ready to read. Pictured above L-R: Emily Kimball, Children’s Services Manager; Tiffany Hemmer, Family Place Coordinator; Molly Carver, Executive Director; Sandra Feinberg, Family Place Libraries™; and Terri Estel, Director of Operations.

The American Library Association launched its new Libraries Transform initiative nationwide on October 29. We welcome you to visit your Library and transform your 2016.
