DIRECTOR’S UPDATE Thanks to all of our friends and donors who attended the Grand Opening of our Early Literacy Center, Dive Into Reading, and Digital Media Studio on August 12. We were delighted to showcase the renovated children’s area and new recording studio to an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd. If you have not had a chance to see our newly renovated children’s space, please take a walk through on your next visit to the Library. We welcome you to bring your preschooler to explore the new space. The Digital Media Studio is available by reservation to adults with a Sandusky Library card in good standing. An orientation is required prior to using the Studio. To schedule an orientation in the Sound Recording Studio, Video Recording Studio, or both, give us a call at 419-625-3834. Check out our iMac class offerings also inside this newsletter. September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month. Now is the perfect time of year to check your wallet and your child’s backpack for a Library card as the school year starts. Your Library card is a great value: It allows you to borrow library materials at no cost. New card holders register for free at any time. Programs for Families and Adults Battle of the Books is a literary trivia competition for students entering grades 4-7, with all the questions derived from eight pre-selected books for tweens. Five Erie County libraries (Bellevue, Huron, Milan, Sandusky, Vermilion) built teams this summer to compete in the Regional Battle. This is a spectator sport (think Academic Challenge)! We invite everyone to attend and cheer on TEAM SANDUSKY!

Lunch & Learn: For the Life of Your Business

Wednesday, October 14, at 12:00 p.m. John Heston, SCORE, presenter Is your dream to work for yourself? Join a group of local SCORE mentors and learn about resources available to start or expand a small business. Topics discussed will be the key services SCORE offers to entrepreneurs, how to contact local SCORE mentors, and the basics of business plans. There will be time for Q&A. Cleveland SCORE is an organization dedicated to fostering and educating the small business community in Northeast Ohio.

Monday, November 2, at 6:30 p.m. Celebrate National Picture Book Month by learning more about the art in some favorite picture books.There will be opportunities to make your own artwork as well.

Adult Social: Color Your Stress Away

Wednesday, November 4 Coloring is an activity we think of as being for kids only. However, it can be beneficial for adults, too. Coloring helps adults destress because instead of focusing on our worries, the focus is instead on a particular activity. Coloring generates wellness, quietness, and also stimulates brain areas related to motor skills, the senses, and creativity. Stop by the Main Lobby where coffee, coloring sheets, and colored pencils will be provided.

International Game Day (8-15 years)

Family Stories and Crafts

Saturday, December 5, at 2:30 p.m. Pat Catan’s, presenters Bring the entire family and join us for a fun afternoon of sharing stories and special winter crafts. Pat Catan's will be providing the craft materials. Registration is required.

Thursdays at 1:30 p.m. October 8, 15, 22, 29 STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and math. Join us for STEM storytime where we will explore science and math concepts through books, activities, and more.

Thursday, November 5, at 10:30 a.m. Help Me Grow staff, presenters Help Me Grow staff will be on hand to help us celebrate National Picture Book Month. You and your child will be making a personal picture book to take home. Please bring photos that can be cut and added to your book!

October 5, 12, 19, November 9, 16, 23 (not November 2) Pages and Pups pairs children in K-3rd grade with volunteers who meet at the Library to practice reading, play reading games, and choose books to take home. Participants can read their favorite stories aloud to a Therapy Dog. Registration is required.

October 7, 14, 21, 28, November 4 Moms, Dads, Grandparents, and Caregivers! Here is a five-week program for you and your little one! This series focuses on you and your child. Each week a different local child development and health professional will be on hand as a great resource for you while your child plays. The focus is on early intervention, strategies for healthy child development, early literacy, and meeting other parents. (Ages 1-3 years; siblings under 5 are welcome.) Registration is required. Vouchers for transportation on the SPARC are available free of charge by The Erie County Foundations’ Council of the Erie County Community Foundation.

2015 Annual Fund Donors

In 1992, the Library established a Foundation to receive planned giving donations, bequests, memorials, and annual gifts. The Foundation’s funds have been used to help the Library update technology, preserve paintings and other historical objects at the Follett House Museum, provide funds for the Library’s summer reading programs for children, and help with long range building needs both at the Library and the Museum. We are grateful to the donors of the 2015 Annual Fund drive (listed right) and acknowledge their generosity to the Library and Museum.

Local History Lost Sandusky

Wednesday, September 16, at 12:00 p.m. M. Kristina Smith, Author, presenter The author will discuss her new book, Lost Sandusky, about places and activities that are no longer here. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. The author has worked in newspapers for twelve years, working as a reporter, and most recently as an assistant editor/reporter for the Port Clinton News Herald and the Fremont News-Messenger since 2004.

Cemetery Walk: Germans in Sandusky

Tuesday, September 22, at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 23, at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 24, at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 26, at 10:00 a.m. Maggie Marconi, Sandusky Library, presenter German immigrants made a strong impact on Sandusky. The community supported German newspapers, German businesses, and German traditions, traces of which survive to this day. Explore the history of some of the area residents who helped shaped Sandusky’s future. As this is a walking tour, please wear appropriate shoes and outerwear and be prepared to stand or walk for at least an hour. Registration is required.

Honoring Our World War II Veterans

Wednesday, September 30, at 6:00 p.m. Ron Davidson, Sandusky Library, presenter Learn about the conditions and environment of WWII in Sandusky. There will also be an opportunity to meet veterans and hear about their experiences.

Ohio Historical Marker Dedication Ceremony

Tuesday, October 6, at 10:30 a.m. Join us as we dedicate an Ohio Historical Marker that celebrates the history of the Sandusky Library and the former Erie County Jail. The marker is made possible by a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

Marblehead Lighthouse on Lake Erie: Ohio’s Historic Beacon by James Proffitt

Saturday, November 7 12:00 p.m. James Proffitt, Author, presenter Join us for a presentation with author James Proffitt about the popular lighthouse on the Marblehead peninsula. His newly-published book will be available for purchase and signing. This book is part of the Landmarks series produced by Arcadia Publishing and The History Press.

Book Talk: The War That Forged A Nation: Why The Civil War Still Matters by James McPherson

Wednesday, November 18, at 6:00 p.m. Dr. George N. Vourlojianis, Professor of History, Lorain County Community College, presenter Pulitzer Prize-winning historian James McPherson considers why the Civil War remains so deeply embedded in our national psyche and identity. The drama and tragedy of the war help explain why the Civil War remains a topic of interest. Dr. Vourlojianis will draw on his specialty areas of American military history with an emphasis on Civil War and Ohio history to lead this discussion.

Follett House Museum Holiday Open House

Friday, November 27, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, December 3, from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Join us at the Follett House Museum for one of Sandusky’s treasured traditions. The Museum will be decorated in all its holiday splendor. Refreshments and live entertainment will be provided. If you cannot make it to our evening open house, we invite you to join us for Starbucks™ coffee and cookies at our daytime celebration.


Digital Media Studio/Computer Classes GarageBand Rock Out (Ages 9-16)

Digital Media Studio Classes** ** Registration is required for ALL DMS classes.

Saturday, October 24 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Learn about GarageBand using our iMac computers, then have a jam session recording your own tracks and ringtones.

Sound Recording Studio Orientation (18 years and up)

Equipment for use in the Sound Recording Studio includes audio and instrumental microphones, a pop screen, and an iMac with GarageBand installed.

Registration is required as the registration limit is set at 15.

An orientation is required prior to scheduling time to use the Sound Recording Studio and familiarize you with the Studio guidelines. Call the Library at 419625-3834 to schedule an orientation.

Video Recording Studio Orientation (18 years and up)

Equipment for use in the Video Recording Studio includes audio and instrumental microphones, a portable lighting kit, a Canon Rebel camera with HD video recording, portable Flip Video UltraHD camera, and green screen with backgrounds. An orientation is required prior to scheduling time to use the Video Recording Studio. Call the Library at 419-625-3834 to schedule an orientation.

Introduction to iMac

Wednesday, September 23, 2:00-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, 10:30-12:00 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 10:30 -12:00 p.m. Learn how to use the new iMacs in the Digital Media Studio. This class will help you understand the basics of using Apple software and hardware. Some experience with computers is necessary. This class will be using OS X Yosemite.

Getting to Know iMovie

Monday, October 12, 2:00-3:30 p.m. Monday, November 2, 6:00-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 8, 10:30-12:00 p.m. Learn the basics of using Apple’s entry-level video editing program, iMovie, by working through a simple project. Class is conducted on iMac computers. Basic experience with Mac computers is recommended before taking this class.

Getting to Know GarageBand

Wednesday, October 14, 2:00-3:30 p.m. Wednesday , November 4, 6:00-7:30 p.m. Thursday, December 10, 10:30 -12:00 p.m. Learn the basics of GarageBand, the audio recording and editing software from Apple. Basic experience with Mac computers is recommended before taking this class.

Ohio Library Council Grants 2015 Library Innovation Award to Sandusky Library for Internet and Roku Lending Programs Each year, the Ohio Library Council awards individuals and organizations who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and remarkable dedication to providing exceptional library service to their communities. Sandusky Library was chosen to receive the Library Innovation Award for our Internet and Roku Lending Programs. We will receive the award at the Ohio Library Council Convention and Expo Awards and Honors Luncheon on October 7.

Computer Classes Hands-on classes are offered in the Center for Lifelong Learning for ages 18 and up. Space is limited to the first 14 people who sign in at the Terrace Level lobby up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the class.

Birdmen: The Wright Brothers, Glenn Curtiss, and the Battle to Control the Skies by Lawrence Goldstone

Monday, November 9, at 6:00 p.m. Dennis McMullen, Sandusky Library, discussion leader The feud between this nation’s great air pioneers, the Wright brothers and Glenn Curtiss, was a collision of unyielding and profoundly American personalities. For more than a decade, they battled each other in court, at air shows, and in the newspapers. The outcome of this contest of wills would shape the course of aviation history.

Monday, October 12, at 6:00 p.m. David Swaldo and Lori Esposito, Sandusky Library, discussion leaders A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-yearold Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. And somehow—impossible though it seems—they may still be alive.

For decades, the DUKES of Dixieland have thrilled audiences around the world as ambassadors from the heart of the Big Easy. The DUKES have sold out such venues as the Hollywood Bowl, the Kennedy Center, and the Smithsonian, to name but a few.

Help the oldest continuously-performing Dixieland Jazz Band celebrate their 40th anniversary year, as they come to you from their home base, the Steamboat Natchez on the Mississippi. The DUKES do it all!---Blues, Country, Gospel, Jazz, Pops. Constant updating is occurring with each new member—400 tunes are now in their repertoire. Today, each member has a Master’s Degree in Music. FREE TICKET INFORMATION: This concert is funded by The Lange Trust of Sandusky Library.
