hile recently browsing an antique shop in Flat Rock, North Carolina, I picked up an issue of Arts & Decoration magazine, circa March 1927. Charmed by its vintage photographs and retro appeal, I took it home to study its content. What insightful words of design wisdom I discovered in its pages. A few to take note of, and for us design devotees to keep in mind...
On Gardens: “Gardens, like everything else in the world, should be made with imagination as well as knowledge. There must seem leisure in the loveliness—and permanency. In short, beauty of a garden lies in looking lived in, by dreams at least.” On Room Composition: “It is one thing to be able to make up a pretty color scheme and quite a different matter to bring all the diverse elements of a room together in such fashion as to make a beautiful composition. People live in these compositions; move about in them. Therefore, they must of necessity be as sound in their structural composition as a group of sculpture and as lovely in their color choice and arrangement as is the work of the painter upon canvas.” On Architecture: “As American dwellings are built better, more permanently and more beautifully, they will be regarded less as real estate and more as homes, and with that change in attitude, the status of the home as the nucleus of society will approach more closely the older American tradition.”

Created from a series of interconnected geometric shapes with metallic-finished cores, Gabriel Kakon and Scott Richler’s Welles light fixture is a welcome addition to the brothers’ exclusive line of furnishings. Luxe sits down with Katie Wolfe Agron, interior designer and co-owner of Denver’s MK Style.
What inspired you to begin a career in design? From the time I was a little girl, my mother and grandmother would take me antiquing; we were always on the hunt for the next beautiful piece. I watched them enjoy reinventing rooms, and I eventually picked up the habit. What influences you on a daily basis? The way people live their lives. It’s not always about location, but rather lifestyle, whether it’s relaxed, more sophisticated, trendy or beachy. Are there specific colors, patterns or textures that resonate most with you? Green and blue are always staples in my designs; the pairing is timeless. Also, every season, we look to the runway for inspiration and pull colors, textures and patterns that we see and incorporate them into our product offerings. Who are some of your design icons? Victoria Hagan for her ability to successfully mix architectural details into her interior design projects; and Celerie Kemble for her penchant for blending the old with the new.

GREAT HEIGHTS The raw quality and natural allure of Machu Picchu inspired designer Jiun Ho to create his latest furniture collection entitled Jiun Ho IV, a collaborative effort with Peruvian-born textile designer Sandra Jordan. “I find that many of my clients are attracted to the idea of using color but are fearful in applying it,” Boyd says. “Tabletop is a great way to have fun and experiment with interesting combinations.” The designer chose Anna Weatherley’s goldrimmed charger for its amethyst color and her scalloped white dinner plate for its bright note; the hand-painted Jaune de Chrome dessert dish serves as a complement to both, and the leopard-print Norbar fabric neutralizes the color scheme. Boyd layered Rogaska crystal throughout the smoky purple dining room and added delicate Hermès flatware as jewelry for the table—a play on the literal reference she made with an agate bracelet as a napkin ring. FERNAND LÉGER’S ENDURING ART PIECE DEPICTING ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN LIFE INSPIRES AN EXHIBITION ON THE MODERN METROPOLIS.
S
o many modern artists expressed their world through their experience of the street and the changes they were observing in the urban fabric. The modern metropolis was the central symbolic site of modernity. Léger: Modern Art and The Metropolis—the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s exhibition on the metropolis and the exchanges of influence between Fernand Léger and the artists, architects, filmmakers and poets
of the 1920s international avant-garde in Paris—makes its debut this fall. Running from October through January, the exhibition was inspired by The City (shown here), a formative work in 20th-century art, and one of the core masterpieces in the museum’s collection. “We wanted to focus on the metropolis to show how current modern art’s engagement with the world can be for today’s city dwellers,” notes exhibit curator Anna Vallye. “What’s so remarkable is that the city Léger painted almost 100 years ago is still completely familiar to us today. Of course, cities have changed since then, but there is also something profoundly enduring about Léger’s vision.” philamuseum.org

that classic design is outdated and uncomfortable and I wanted to show that nothing could be further from the truth. Design is a pendulum and while it swings from trend to trend, it always returns to the classical because there is an innate sense of security in it. It is more forgiving, as it accepts that daily accoutrements are a part of our living spaces.
YOUR APPROACH TO DESIGN:

None of what I do is too studied. I think a flea market treasure can be mixed in with an 18th-century console and you get to appreciate each of them more because of their relationship to one another. Who wants to live in a room that whispers, “Look, but don’t touch?”
It is important to make them feel as if they are in their own home. I always leave flowers, freshly baked goodies, magazines or books I think they will enjoy and a scented candle in their room to welcome them.
ARCHITECTURAL WHY UNDERTAKE SUCH A PAINSTAKING RESTORATION?
I love the secrets that you find in the stones of old buildings and the challenge of taking something that was designed for a different way of life and subtly transforming it for the way we live today. FURNISHING THE CHATEAU…
Was a real labor of love and I used an approach that I would advise anyone to: Buy what you love and it will somehow find its proper place. me, Southern California is all about comfort, casual living and self- expression, but there is just something about the French respect for culture, history and tradition that really resonates with me.
PERIOD: Mid-tolate 18th-century France was such a remarkable time for architecture, because it held the highest level of refinement of the French aesthetic, but it was tempered by the age of enlightenment. in time to when life was all much slower and people really had the time to be with each other. I can think of no other place in the world I would rather be when I am afforded the luxury of time.

This season, Kyle Bunting’s effervescent hide-on-hair pattern work collides with South Florida design studio Britto Charette’s penchant for Art Deco architecture. The result is this hourglass stool, which marks the duo’s first venture into the home accessories arena. “I like this piece as a single side table, but it works best when used in multiples,” says Bunting. “The juxtaposition of the warm and tactile hide against the opaque base’s smooth silhouette is nearly the perfect combination of materials and surfaces.”

+ To create the Sorenthia light fixture, Rhode Island-based designer Asher Dunn turned to the marvels of the ocean to find his muse. “I was intrigued by the crystalline nature of sea kelp when seen below the surface of water,” says Dunn, who took a cue from the arresting quality of light shining through the plant. In the early 1950s, celebrated Italian architect and furniture visionary Gio Ponti experimented with several models of this exquisite case good. “I’ve never collected just one thing,” says Sara Bishop of her “super eclectic” style. Her varied tastes are reflected in the antiques, artwork and gift items offered in her Boulder shop. Opposite: Bishop admires the stylish mix designer Mary McDonald achieves in her interiors.
“We’re about being one-of-a-kind in Boulder,” Sara Bishop says of her shop, Bishop, which at first glance might seem more Continental than Colorado. “Everything here would fit just as beautifully in a lodge as it would in a stately home. It’s Europe in the mountains.” Showcasing a carefully curated selection of antiques, original artwork and gift items, the recently opened shop reflects Bishop’s own personal aesthetic and approach. “I always try to use techniques and methods that will stand the test of time,” says Colorado Springs furniture maker Geoffrey Keating. Opposite: Keating finds inspiration in the work of Wharton Esherick, whose handmade desk is on display in his Pennsylvania studio-turned-museum.
Geoffrey Keating appreciates tradition—he comes from a family honored with five generations of woodworkers. Yet, surprisingly, the owner of Keating Woodworks only pursued the craft about seven years ago while studying theology at Notre Dame. “I needed to do something with my hands,” he says. “Instinctively, I turned to woodworking and became obsessed.” Now

operating his hobby-turned-profession out of an 1897 former grocer’s building in Colorado Springs, Keating focuses on classic furniture designs that have a contemporary feel. Take his spindle-back chairs, for instance, which reinterpret the basic forms of the Windsor design to fit today’s aesthetic. In crafting his pieces, Keating turns to traditional joinery methods and, almost exclusively, walnut. Not only does he use sustainably harvested and salvaged material, the furniture maker lets the organic nature of the wood do the talking. “The knots and cracks of each board are unique,” he says. “So even when the design is the same, you’re bound to bring home furniture with a distinct personality.” keatingwoodworks.com; 574.904.9392

to express that feeling is through art and design.” A former graphic and multimedia designer, the Austria-born Aell, who came to Denver to collaborate on an art project when she met her future husband, uses vestiges of her past careers as stepping-stones for her artwork. Describing her approach as “playfully conceptual,” the artist says it’s her alternating focus and artistic range that proves most integral to her theory. “My art has always been multilayered, leaving room for interpretation,” she says. Working in an array of mediums—from painting, sculpture, mixed-media and installation to costume, set, lighting and jewelry design—Aell is inspired by color, texture, imperfection and the hidden meaning behind things. “The more diversity in my work, the bigger the network of possibilities in my mind,” explains the artist, who is represented by Walker Fine Art. “For me, this is both challenging and exciting.” sabinaell.com; 720.309.1764

etting out to renovate the kitchen of their cottage-style home in New Canaan, Connecticut, a couple didn’t have to search too far for their muse. With Dutch and Belgian heritages, respectively, the husband and wife instinctively harked back to the enchanting
aesthetics for which their native lands are revered. “We wanted to make sure that we retained a very cozy, vintage European vibe, like that of an old bakery, for instance,” homeowner and designer Tessa Neleman-Pimontel explains. Another check off their wish list was to keep the space open (notice the pared down cabinetry; the simple ceramic subway tiling by the Bertazonni hood and stove; uninterrupted counter space), organized and flooded with light while retaining a sense of genuineness. “This kitchen adds an instant feeling of authenticity to our home,” she says. “It works out well as an open space time together. Every afternoon, the low-setting sun pours in, which adds to the whole mood we were aiming to capture.”

DISPLAY TYPE Opting for limited upper cabinetry, the Nelemans had to search for alternative answers to de rigueur storage questions. “The idea of the hutch was always in our minds, but it only came to fruition after we found the right pieces,” Tessa notes. “Nearing the final stages of the renovation, we took a trip to Mexico. We knew what we were looking for, but were very surprised when we found it in an old hardware store. We fell in love with the huge hutch and bought it right there and then.” To balance the rustic nature of the towering case, the homeowners kept it simple. “We like white as a base, but there are many touches of Delft and even Guatemalan earthenware in the mix. The key is to make sure that whatever is visible is positioned well (handles all turned the same direction, everything evenly spaced) and to edit, edit, edit. Keep only what you really need and use often.” For additional visual variety, they encircled the antique Swedish farm table with steel bistro chairs from Vagabond Vintage in Atlanta.

Sex and the City movie—the result is destined to be laden with glitz and theatricality. Such is the case for this opulent space that Estee Stanley dreamt up for a Beverly Hills client. “I wanted to make

sure that my client used every square inch of her home, and that each space met her needs and represented who she was,” Stanley says. The resulting bathroom is a study in simple elegance, and the impact of letting just a few statement pieces have their moment in the spotlight: a sinuous freestanding Waterworks tub entices a leisurely soak; dreamy draperies in a blush tone coyly flirt with a coquettish portrait of Marilyn Monroe; two-tone marble floors are striking yet feel as if they’ve always been there; and finally, the crown jewel of the room, a polyhedron chandelier Stanley sourced from JF Chen in Los Angeles that would get the most pragmatic person’s pulse racing.

CLOTHES QUARTERS What’s a designer to do when a client’s existing closet space simply isn’t sufficient for their wardrobe? Well, you relocate the master bedroom and transform the remaining space into a dressing room fit for a Rodeo Drive boutique, of course. “I like to think of closets as a fun playroom for women, so I try to make them big enough where you can have friends come over, hang out and play dress up,” Stanley says. “This typically calls for a seating area.” The designer brought in a custom chaise that offers her client (and her client’s fortunate guests) a place to sit and ponder the day’s sartorial decisions, while an antique rug from Lawrence of La Brea complements sleek custom cabinetry. “This is one of my favorite designs I’ve done,” Stanley says. “It’s every woman’s dream.”

Los Angeles designer and one half of Harbinger LA, Joe Lucas created an entryway to remember using the sleekest fall wallcoverings. A “sucker for a salon-style wall,” Lucas began his dynamic scene with artist Sharon Lee’s debut line as his anchor. “The chic gray-and-saffron combo of Lee’s Chrysanthemum design caught my eye instantly,” he says. Building from there, Lucas approached many of the papers as he would art. “Kelly Wearstler’s provocative new Crescent design is a recent obsession, so it needed to be framed. And the sculptural Weitzner paper lent itself to being floated in an acrylic box, earning the focal point position in the space.” From a Holland & Sherry-clad flowerpot and a Wearstler-wrapped lampshade to an Innovationsupholstered stool, Lucas reveals that wallpaper knows no boundaries.

Naturally lured by wallcoverings that possess an assured straight-lined disposition, interiors devotee Sara Ruffin Costello unexpectedly found herself swept away by the season’s more abstract offerings. “I was drawn to patterns that appear out of focus; especially those peachy, warm tones,” she explains. “They feel less expectant than chevron or stripes (which I love) that continue to pop up each year.” After reveling in a veritable trove of papers, Costello sought to create a sunburst, turning to London-based moldings manufacturer Solomon & Wu for a bit of architectural encouragement. “The plaster moldings were a structured counterbalance to the loose, dreamy quality of the papers, and the dynamic sunburst shape has an artistic character to it, like a patterned color wheel.”

“There is so much to be excited about when it comes to wallpaper,” exclaims New York-based interior designer Philip Gorrivan, who’s heralded his longstanding love affair with the material throughout his design career. His studious composition began with an unadorned bookcase that, according to the designer, left much to be desired. Presented with the latest lines, Gorrivan cloaked the back of the shelves with a subtle yet striking Farrow & Ball stripe and developed groupings of covered books in stylized vignettes, each layer telling its own story. “Dedar’s new boldly hued geometrics alongside Clarke & Clarke’s punchy floral patterns
“I tend to gravitate toward geometrics or patterns that aren’t so directional. I love products that are fearlessly gutsy. It’s fun to create a little tension in a space by introducing a wallpaper that appears to completely break all the rules.”

M A R Y K N A P E & K E L LY Z I B E L L VESTIBULE, ENTRY AND LANDING You only get one chance to make a first impression are words Mary Knape and Kelly Zibell took to heart when designing the house’s highly visible vestibule, entry and landing. “All the rooms flow off of these spaces, so it was a huge responsibility to set the right tone,” says Knape. “We selected a soft color palette so our spaces wouldn’t fight with any of the adjoining rooms.” In the tiny anteroom, the designers placed a mirrored chest of drawers against a wall they painted sea-foam green to greet visitors before they glimpse the formal entry and its grass-cloth walls. A red mahogany console with a gold-leaf accent glimmers, and a classic diamond-patterned wool runner beckons guests to the landing. Upstairs, an oversize painting, selected by the show house’s art curator Ann Benson Reidy, hangs above a console on one wall, while a bench upholstered with a leopard velvet contrasts with the geometric wallcovering of another. “The bench is so traditional we felt we could introduce something edgy to punctuate the space,” Zibell says. TONY TORRES FA M I LY R O O M In the typical American family room, the television is a focal point; so rather than hide it, designer Tony Torres embraced it. “I put the flat screen in full view and balanced it with a mahogany console lined with beautiful accessories,” says Torres. “When the television is turned off, your eye goes to the candlesticks, and you don’t even notice it’s there.” A sectional upholstered with a stain-resistant cotton-rayon-polyester fabric provides the requisite spot for lounging, and a pair of curved chromeand-leather chairs rounds out the seating area. Measured splashes of mustard—“It had to be the right tone of curry,” says Torres—offset the gray walls, and a playful mix of pillows covered with dot, chevron and plaid patterns keeps things casual. Believing every room should have a connection to nature, Torres introduced a coffee table fashioned from a 200-year-old slab of acacia and a pouf featuring individual felt cutouts that mirror the leaf accents in the drapes. ASHLEY CAMPBELL & SONJA DREYER DINING ROOM In the formal dining room, designers Ashley Campbell and Sonja Dreyer let the existing leaded glass windows and a pair of sconces—aptly named Candlelight 21st Century—set the modern-meets-classic direction. To underscore that tone, the duo toyed with wrapping the expansive room with a hand-painted wallcovering, but thought it might be overwhelming. “So we put it on the ceiling, instead,” says Campbell, who echoed the pattern’s reflective geometric quality with a large hanging drum shade featuring a similar motif. “It was just the wow factor the space needed, and it tied in perfectly with the pattern in the leaded glass windows.” The room’s commodious dimensions also dictated the scale of the furnishings and the decision to go with fewer larger pieces rather than run the risk of overfurnishing. A sextet of handsome charcoal velvet-covered chairs, finished with nail heads to delineate their tailored form, surrounds a custom 84-inch round table crowned with a Caesarstone top. MARVIN WILKINSON LIVING ROOM “The room is very reflective of today’s lifestyle and the architecture that surrounds it,” says designer Marvin Wilkinson of John Brooks Studio, who worked with Ben Menke and Jennifer DeBroske-Lee to create a formal living room that honors both its 1920s history and contemporary life. “It’s sophisticated yet comfortable.” Taking a layered approach to the space, the designers chose a timeless sofa upholstered with alpaca velvet and a pair of wood-frame lounge chairs—“They could be circa 1952 or present day,” says Menke—to establish the first tier. Next, a silk-abaca blend wallcovering, wool sateen drapes and a silk rug define the textural layer. “Silk has been around forever, but the abstract pattern on the rug makes it current,” says DeBroske-Lee. Color arrives in the form of Fortuny drapery trim in a subtle orange shade and upholstered silk-velvet benches sporting an antique gold hue. Meanwhile, the crystal chandelier recalls the room’s roots. “We chose pieces that reflect a sparkle of beauty on their own, but still work with others,” Wilkinson adds.

BETH ARMIJO B R E A K FA S T N O O K To create a family-friendly breakfast nook distinguished from the formal feel of the rest of the house, designer Beth Armijo determined a casual upholstered banquette was the perfect solution. Working with the show house’s architect, Steve Ekman, she used the home’s existing moldings as a reference for the paneling of the corner built-in. She then had a wide-plank oak trestle table custom made to stand up to the rigor of daily life and chose a pair of low-slung chairs, sporting a colorful stripe, to provide extra seating. “You have to walk through this space to get from the kitchen to the family room, so I wanted the chairs to have some presence without going overboard,” says Armijo, who covered the seats with the same washable vinyl as the banquette’s cushion. “The stripes lighten up the space and add a fun punch.” The delicate silver trellis pattern of the hand-printed fabric she used to upholster the walls further integrates the room with the architecture, while a hand-blown glass chandelier “doesn’t detract from the upholstered wall,” she notes, “but still holds its weight.” Artwork: Evan Anderman Photography; curated by Ann Benson Reidy. K AT I E W O L F E A G R O N BOY’S BEDROOM “Every child’s room should be a little messy, and mixing patterns is one way to create a casual effect,” says designer Katie Wolfe Agron, who didn’t hesitate to build the boy’s room around a brown-and-white toile fabric she used on the bed skirt and pillows. “It’s a very outdoorsy print with bears and evergreens, but it’s also abstract and a bit more sophisticated.” From there she added a plaid tent—“the perfect indoor getaway”—and designed clean-lined drapes, which she topped with a square valance to make an architectural statement. A painted abstract polka dot wainscot caps things off. “I like all my rooms to have a bit of pop or jazz, and that wainscot made all the difference,” says Wolfe, who collaborated with Molly Simons, her partner in the shop MK Style, on accessories such as the row of wall hooks for displaying clothing. “It can be a dress-up area or a place for Mom to lay out a week’s worth of outfits,” she says.

PETRA RICHARDS & KRISTINA STERLING G I R L’ S B E D R O O M “We wanted to be mindful of the architecture of the house while introducing some unexpected elements to this room to make it more enticing and eclectic,” says Kristina Sterling, who designed the girl’s bedroom with Petra Richards. The duo made the decision to pair a traditional canopy bed and crystal chandelier with hand-printed coffee bean wallpaper

and dramatic black-and-white zigzag draperies. Despite its designation as a feminine space, the designers decided the room should also be sophisticated enough to work as a guest room, while still maintaining a sense of fun and whimsy. “Combining a custom rose-colored duvet with contemporary art and a trio of Italian glass lamps gives it a playful feel,” says Richards, who also envisioned the room as a transitional space that could take its occupant from girlhood through her teenage years. Central to that idea is a bronze statue that seems to gaze into the gardens. “She’s a wistful, romantic figure that transcends age,” says Sterling.

MIKAL OTTEN KITCHEN “I wanted there to be a dramatic feature that would invite you in,” Mikal Otten of Exquisite Kitchen Design says about the space, which he completely remodeled to include a prominent steel stove hood with an antique finish. “Now your eye goes right from those beautiful glass pendants to that hood.” Otten scooped the edge of the custom design for drama and chose its material so it would be harmonious with the 1920s architecture. He then rimmed the kitchen’s perimeter with hand-glazed white cabinets with inset doors, also typical of the era, and dressed them with polished-nickel hardware. For the central marble-topped island, Otten—who collaborated with designer Beth Armijo on selecting the accessories and finishes, such as the ceramic tile floor, light fixtures and paint color—chose a dark walnut to lend an anchoring presence to the room. “It gives the island a furniture look,” says Otten. “I also added three-piece moldings to the cabinets that reach the ceiling and make the room look like it was always there.” 248 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

A N D R E A M O N AT H S C H U M A C H E R MASTER BEDROOM With the Denver Botanic Gardens right next door, designer Andrea Monath Schumacher, working with project manager Shadie Copeland, couldn’t resist bringing the beauty and serenity of the gardens into the master bedroom. “You look right through those draperies out to the trees,” Schumacher says of draperies made from spring-green fabric dotted with images of tiny blue birds. Other ornithological references abound, from the enlarged print of a classic Audubon image to the watercolor-like bird motif on the linen pillow shams to an ibis lamp that playfully peeks its head over the top of its shade. “A little sense of humor is always important, but so is introducing an unexpected element,” says Schumacher, who juxtaposed a traditional four-poster with a bold orange hue. “When you alter an iconic form in a way that makes it modern, that’s true design.” For continuity, the designer pulled a hint of green into the adjacent bathroom with a rug fashioned from recycled saris. DEVON TOBIN & MIRANDA CULLEN MOTHER’S OFFICE On the hunt to find a perfect centerpiece for the mother’s office, designers Devon Tobin and Miranda Cullen of Duet Design Group hit pay dirt at A Paris Street Market in Littleton with an original 1930s settee, whose inherent beauty was hidden under layers of cracking black paint. “All we saw when we looked at it was a beautiful shape and an opportunity to bring something great back to life,” says Tobin, who along with Cullen, transformed the piece with a silver-leaf finish and a bright graphic floral fabric. The designers then flanked the settee with reclaimed-wood shelves filled with mercury glass, antique silver and other metal-toned accessories to complement the gray hue they chose for the walls. In lieu of a coffee table, the duo opted for a pair of embossed-leather and antique-brass side tables to fit the scale of the room and added a modern accent with a bold grid-patterned rug. A N U S C H K A PA S H E L GUEST BEDROOM It’s hard not to notice the drum pendant engulfed with three layers of ivory feathers hanging from the ceiling of the guest bedroom. From there your eye might wander to the coarse burlap on a dome-shaped chair, or to the smooth marble coffee table, or to the gold-leaf side table cast from a real tree trunk or to any number of materials that constitute the tactile fantasy orchestrated in the room by designer Anuschka Pashel. “If I have a signature, it’s my use of texture,” says Pashel, who even trimmed the Roman shades with a velvet ikat. “I don’t like to use all wood or leather or glass, but prefer to bring together a little bit of everything.” To make her point, she deftly combined a dark leather headboard with a cream linen-covered sofa and then added a hammered-gold-leaf console table with a mosaic agate top to serve as both a desk and vanity. In the adjoining bathroom, Buddha statues and a silvered mirror round out the rich, layered look. MIKHAIL OCAMPO DANTES & RON DANTES STUDY “Every house needs a dark room,” says designer Mikhail Ocampo Dantes, “both for drama and to supply a cozy nesting place.” By introducing charcoal gray walls to the historic home’s study—which, thanks to the discovery of a pair of pocket doors by the show house’s contractor, Doug Canady, became a passageway between the living and family rooms—Dantes instantly distinguished the space from its brighter-walled neighbors. Within that darkened boundary, Dantes, working with his brother and business partner, Ron Dantes, varied the textural and color values to keep the monochromatic scheme interesting. A metallic-backed paper weave wallcovering on the ceiling introduces a hint of sheen, while a rosewood desk adds a warm tone. A cottonchenille-covered chaise is made even more inviting with the addition of velvet pillows. “And don’t overlook the role of accessories,” says Dantes, who kicked off a crystal theme with a Philippe Starck vase on the stainless-steel coffee table. “I try to pick objects that relate to each other and have some kind of meaning.” Accessories: Ralph Lauren Home. C A R O LY N M O R R I S G U E S T A PA R T M E N T Black-and-white photographs of Debbie Harry, The Ramones and other rock icons adorn the walls and peek out from the bookcases of the house’s guest apartment. “They’re a nod to the 1970s with a touch of punk,” says designer Carolyn Morris, who defined sleeping and sitting areas in the open space with handmade wool rugs and then accented Roman shades with brass zippers. “I tried to give even the most sophisticated guests something they may not experience in their own homes.” To enhance the existing architecture, Morris added a low chair rail and built up the baseboard trim. She played off those elements with the introduction of crisp white walls and modern Italian furnishings. “I love the mix of traditional architecture with things like the slipcovered sofa and white sculptural table,” says Morris. For pops of color against the otherwise muted scheme, Morris added bright pink velvet pillows and striped rug tiles in the adjoining kitchen for “an element of fun.” Bed: Poliform. Chair: Flexform. CONNI NEWSOME & ASHLEY LARSON O U T D O O R S PA C E S Designers Conni Newsome and Ashley Larson believe that outdoor spaces should carry the same weight as indoor rooms. “A front porch sets the stage for the entire house, and the furnishings should never be an afterthought,” says Larson, who, along with Newsome, assembled hand-forged iron furnishings and a host of indoor-style elements, including white-linen draperies, a framed mirror and side tables draped with burlap, to give the front porch a sophisticated air. For cohesiveness, the designers turned to the same iron furnishings in the pool area, where this time the pieces are joined by dining tables dressed with hand-painted tablecloths in a subtle charcoal ombré pattern, black director’s chairs and taupe-and-white striped pillows. Crisp boxwoods in matte-black planters provide a sculptural touch of green throughout. “The neutral palette really complements the architecture and establishes a timeless quality,” says Newsome. “Our intent was to create outdoor rooms that encourage lounging and relaxation and that will look as good 10 years from now as they do today.” Black planters: T-Trove Asian Decor. TA B E R S W E E T & A R I E L G E L M A N LANDSCAPE Landscape architects Taber Sweet and Ariel Gelman turned the yard’s existing expanse of neglected sod into a multifunctional wonderland, where Jay Gatsby would have felt right at home. “We wanted to recreate what might have been,” says Gelman, noting that they scavenged for brick to match the 1920s house and used concrete paving bands to echo its architectural features. They even hired a craftsman to hand-notch the columns holding up a cedar arbor. “It’s the kind of detail you would have expected back then,” adds Sweet. Privacy was also a key issue and, after conducting a solar study, they placed the pool in a sunny spot, but also pushed it up against a wall bordering the adjacent Denver Botanic Gardens. “This way visitors standing on the berm would look over the pool,” says Sweet. The pool, which is solar heated and incorporates several small fountains along one edge, was designed to be narrow enough to double as a beautiful water feature when not in use. DISTINCTIVE DÉCOR Designer Kara Mann creates impeccable interiors for clients from her hometown of Chicago to the glittering city of Dubai. When asked about her favored fashion designer, she exclaims “Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent. He makes rocker chic elegant,” she continues, almost inadvertently describing her own signature style. In the dining room pictured here, the draperies are made from Missoni fabric, while the chandelier mimics the punk theme of this year’s Met Ball. Recently, Mann launched a collection of supple leather fabrics with Moore & Giles, citing things such as a vintage Gucci motorcycle jacket as inspiration. Not surprising then that she crowns leather her favorite “non-neutral” neutral. Q+A How has your personal style evolved over the years? It’s become more edited, more sophisticated and more simplified. What is one trend that you’d love to see go? As far as interior design, I’d be happy not to see any more overdyed rugs, and for fashion I’m fairly tired of asymmetrical hems.
“I would describe my personal aesthetic and my interior design style as one in the same really...elegant, effortless edge.”

GENTLEMEN’S QUARTERS The living room of designer Robert Passal’s New York apartment, with its custom moldings and eclectic accessories, perfectly exhibits his aesthetic, self-described as “classic and tailored with a definitive edge.” Passal’s décor point of view effuses his personal style, although he believes “there is a vast difference between dressing yourself and dressing a room.” With interiors, “space, scale and functionality are all major factors,” he explains. Not one to shy away from color, Passal considers a wide range of shades to be the easiest way to incorporate fashion into the home, his favorite hue being aqua. “I’m often called a peacock,” Passal laughs, “which I’ll take as a chic term of endearment.” Q+A Do you ever use fashion fabrics in your design projects? I’m crazy for men’s suiting, especially gray flannel and cashmere chalk stripes used in upholstery. Do you side more with Chanel’s “remove one item before leaving the house” or Tony Duquette’s “more is more?” I fall somewhere in the middle, but the trick is knowing when to stop. Living with items you love, be it art, accessories or daily heirlooms, makes a house a home.

Favorite fashion designer? If I could cross-pollinate Tom Ford and Paul Stuart, I would turn one of my bedrooms into a walk-in closet.
“I’ve never been a fan of the ‘staged’ approach to decorating. Personal accessories can turn a mediocre space into a stunning home.”

INNATE STYLE Best known for a Hollywood-glam aesthetic in a mostly neutral palette, designer and shop owner Tobi Tobin believes that style comes from within, and as is the case with any tastemaker, she claims her tastes have evolved over the years. “I’ve come a long way from wearing preppy embroidered pants in Palm Beach,” she jokes. In her own Los Angeles living room, Tobin expertly layers creams, grays and wood tones, taking cues from Donna Karan—a favorite fashion designer. Her home also works as a place to try out new ideas for her eponymous shop on Sunset Boulevard, where she sells her own furniture collection among vintage pieces and signature candles. Q+A Best style advice? Style truly comes from within, but having the courage to live with it and express it to the world takes confidence. What’s your favorite unexpected neutral? Flax linen is a beautiful neutral, but only when paired with a range of other textures. How do you see fashion trends translated for interiors? Most often through color selection. As designers, we can’t help ourselves. Fashion and interiors have always gone hand in hand.

denver designer show home. Luxe Interiors + Design was honored to be the media sponsor for the 2013 Denver Designer Show House benefitting Children’s Hospital Colorado. To celebrate the success of this incredible project, we gathered the design community for a series of exclusive events. The gardens and pool surrounding the grand property provided the perfect backdrop for bringing together the talented design professionals who donated their time. It was a delight to share the home with Luxe VIPs visiting from around the country, as well as local art, architecture and design enthusiasts. The Show House was a enormous success with over 2000 ticketed guests visiting the home, raising over $100,000 for Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Design professionals from around the state joined us to indulge in gourmet delights from Denver’s Comida food truck, hand-crafted Suerte tequila margaritas and a wine tasting sampling one of Colorado’s best, Sutcliff Winery Vineyards. The see-and-be-seen event provided a fun chance to reconnect with some of the top names in design.

aia gala after-party. This past June, Denver hosted the national convention for the American Institute of Architects, bringing over 18,000 architects to town. Luxe Interiors + Design partnered with some of our local favorites—including Xssentials, Savante and Humanscale—to host a series of events at the Studio Loft space inside the historic Ellie Caulkins Opera House downtown. The grand finale to the event was an after-hours party following the closing night gala where top architects from around the country celebrated in style and danced the night away.
