Neolith® is an architectural skin capable of dressing up any interior or exterior commercial or residential space where it’s applied from floors and walls to kitchen countertops, facades and even furniture. The large format minimizes the number of joints in cladding for decorative and hygiene benefits. The minimal thickness allows it to be directly applied to an already existing surface without the need for prior removal.

It’s a low-maintenance material given its special resistance to scratches, stains, chemicals, high temperatures and traffic. Neolith® also provides the perfect balance between aesthetics and functionality given its unlimited possibilities and capacity to resemble all-natural materials like stone, wood and metal. EDITOR’S LETTER

MUSINGS of HOME Everything we know has changed. These past months as the world literally paused, we found ourselves tethered to our homes—forced to be still, notice and reflect. It was curiosity and boredom, togetherness and aloneness, wanderlust through reading and Netflixing. Food and food and food. Never have so many banana breads collectively been baked. Observing nature and taking a quiet stroll was a tonic for the soul. We sat in our homes, evaluated our homes, and were grateful for our homes. Like spring’s green shoots, we are starting to emerge, not knowing exactly how or where we will land. One thing we know for sure is that we are committing to use our platforms to amplify diverse design voices. Our incredible team put this summer issue together, working remotely, with great care and attention. We trust that it will encourage musing; a promise for the spaces that you and yours inhabit.

Clockwise from top: Snapshots in and around my home. An inspiration wall in my art studio/work-from-home space; the afternoon light in my living room; hiking at a nearby nature preserve; a recent sketchbook.

ashville has come a long way since its 1897 designation as the “Athens of the South,” when a to-scale replica of the Parthenon was erected in modern-day Centennial Park. Founded as a river port city—and, later, a railroad hub—Nashville has been known for its enterprising spirit and classical roots, evidenced by a wealth of Georgian and Greek Revival residences dotting the lawns of Forest Hills and Belle Meade. While these landmark neighborhoods serve as the backbone of the community, the city’s design palette has evolved to be as diverse as that of its latest residents hailing from L.A., Austin, New York and beyond. “Nashville is a perpetual frontier town,” notes DAAD principal Nick Dryden, one of the city’s leading residential and commercial architects, who points to the vast number of transplants moving in, sight unseen, to build businesses and community. Third in a generational line of architects, Dryden proceeded to transform Nashville’s cityscape with progressive ideas and cleaner profiles, authoring icons such as Rolf & Daughters restaurant and Noelle Hotel, while overhauling historic Germantown. “What I do is narrative architecture, a response to historic context, always tailored to the clients,” says Dryden, who straddles disciplines, nodding to local vernacular while incorporating modern hallmarks that appeal to transplants. Natives, in turn, feel increasing permission to take design risks themselves. Adds designer Robin Rains: “Nashville’s historic neighborhoods are steeped in tradition and heritage,” but homeowners wanting to venture beyond the status quo of Southern style “are making the work more challenging and interesting.” She says a curated mix of antique, vintage and modern is coveted for Nashville interiors regardless of the architectural envelope. Rains, who launched her eponymous business in 2001, also maintains a presence in nearby Franklin and Leiper’s Fork, with an antique store in the latter, and has selected the Nashville Design Collective for her next showroom. Considered the city’s first large-scale trade resource, the highly anticipated Collective softopened earlier this year thanks to La Cornue alum Anne Puricelli and Design Galleria principal Matthew Quinn, boasting showrooms such as Circa Lighting and Christopher Peacock, with other top brands coming soon. “Young Nashville residents are raising families and turning tradition on its ear,” says Quinn, who recently augmented his longstanding Atlanta flagship with a new location at the Collective. Plus, anticipated additions to the skyline—such as Soho House, developer Tony Giarratana’s 900 Church and the Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences Nashville—suggest further signs of progress. Despite its classical roots, the “Athens of the South” may be worthy of a new nickname soon: next big thing.

RADAR / CRAFT

ANYTHING but ARTIFICIAL RESIN BECOMES A PRECIOUS MATERIAL WHEN WORKED BY SOME OF LOS ANGELES’S INNOVATIVE DESIGNERS. WRITTEN BY MAILE PINGEL

Since the 1960s, artists and designers in Los Angeles have turned synthetics into decorative gold with ingenious methods of sculpting plastics into luxurious objects. Whether it’s furniture, accessories or fine art, the medium lends itself to a variety of forms that speak to a truly Californian craft. When the state became a leader in aerospace technologies in the 1940s, new materials and cutting-edge capabilities, such as facilities that could roll out sheets of acrylic to form aircraft windows, were revelatory for artists. One leader in the field, designer Charles Hollis Jones, pioneered atmospheric Lucite furnishings that had a profound effect on West Coast interiors. His designs were created with thick sheets of acrylic that allowed them to absorb and magnify light, resulting in a sculptural quality that captured the attention of Hollywood stars like Lucille Ball and Sammy Davis Jr. Today, Jones continues to explore the material with his new Diamond Connexxion line. “Instead of doing square or round shapes, I decided to do something different—people like it,” he says of the angular forms. But a new generation of California creatives, too, is lured by plastic’s limitless, almost magical properties. Elyse Graham, who first became known for the vase forms she created by coating sand-filled balloons with resin, is “completely seduced by the material,” she says. “So many aspects of it capture my imagination. Most excitingly, I’ve now found a way to reuse it.” Working with what she calls MetaMaterial (a composite resin made with recast pieces), she makes furniture that bridges art and function. “Each new project builds on the one before it as we discover new ways of working with resin,” says Graham. For industrial designer and spatial artist Nobel Truong, it’s all an exploration of philosophy and technology. As an “admirer of the structural forms and function that marked Bauhaus architecture,” she creates both theoretical furnishings and playful accessories with laser-cut acrylic panels that slot together. Intrigued by “the play on color and shape pioneered by the Memphis Group,” she also explores the effects of color in her work, especially fluorescent hues. Putting an emphasis on the whimsical side of the material’s complex nature is artist Betsy Enzensberger. “Resin is an incredibly difficult medium to work with, which is why I’m attracted to it,” she says. Likening the liquid resins she casts and sculpts to honey and syrup, it’s not surprising her works celebrate childhood sweets—ice cream and popsicles—that range in size from 6 inches to 6 feet. “I expect perfection in my work, but it’s about joy. I want to spread smiles,” she says.

Artist Betsy Enzensberger uses the familiarity of sweet treats, like her sculpture Vibrant Daydreams made of resin, ink, glitter, pearl powder and plexiglass, to evoke the simplicity and joy so often associated with childhood delights.

Nature’s BOUNTY TEXAS ARCHITECTS TURN TO THE LAND WITH NATIVE MATERIALS LEADING DESIGN.

WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASEY DUNN

Architecture firm Lake Flato’s Horizon House boasts 30inch thick, locally sourced rammed-earth walls that function as a historical means of regulating temperature, while also celebrating local craftspeople and materials.

Texans have a history of building resourcefulness. “We are a state of immigrants,” notes architect Michael Imber. “When people came here, they brought their own culture and aesthetics, and they adapted those to the materials at hand— and that’s why our architecture has character today.” That character, described by Imber as “sturdy, rugged and embodied with heritage,” has made buildings in the Lone Star State famous, and prompted leading architects around the nation to take note. When pioneers came to Texas in the 19th century, they found limited materials. In addition to the limestone they could see in the cuts made by rivers, there were stands of mesquite, cypress and post oak trees and a seemingly unlimited supply of reddish-brown dirt for making adobe bricks and earth walls. The settlers began constructing with these, and to this day Texas architects are following suit and using the same resources. “When we design buildings, we think about what would make them durable and beautiful,” says architect Ted Flato, whose firm has been known to install mesquite floors and make broad use of Texas limestone. “The best materials for this climate are native. Not only

are they beautiful, they make a structure look at home in the landscape.” For Imber, using endemic sources—such as mesquite, cypress, whitewashed Texas limestone and rammed earth—gives structures meaning. “It connects them to the past and to the future,” he says. “Architectural styles may come and go, but if there’s a commonality of materials, it makes us feel comfortable. Looking at things we recognize is a nurturing experience.” It is a look others seek to emulate. “We have clients in far-flung places who fall in love with our work, and they want to build something like it where they live,” says Flato. “When that happens, we begin by looking at the older properties in the area. From there, we can determine what the local materials are—that’s all they had to work with back then. We try to do the same thing with native resources in that particular region.” Imber believes that indigenous materials are like heritage foods. “When foods became homogenized across the U.S., we lost our individual culture and flavor,” he notes. “It’s the same with building sources. Texas has long been a leader in constructing with local ingredients, and the rest of the country is catching on.”

A FRESH CROP OF FURNITURE ARTISANS CRAFTS WITH CARE.

WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY BRITTANY CHEVALIER MCINTYRE

blanchejelly.com Name Game: My company, Blanche Jelly, is named after my great-grandmother. Not only is it a distinctive name, but I also believe it speaks to a certain sense of time and our special relationship. Changing Direction: Before this career, I worked in political risk analysis for the World Bank and realized being in front of a computer all day wasn’t fulfilling for me. Growing up in Portland, Oregon, I was always drawn to home design, so I knew I was inclined to work with interiors and make things by hand. I moved to New York City and received my MFA in interior design from Parsons, then went to Hudson, New York, where I began making furniture. After my business picked up, I moved back to Portland in 2016. Guiding Fundamentals: People are familiar with my plaster pieces, but I also make hardware that follows similar principles—everything is made by hand in my studio. I do not believe in high-tech gadgets. I use five tools and my pieces don’t look perfect. I am not interested in perfection. Untapped Element: I’ve been intrigued by working with stone, and I don’t mean the refined kind. Over the years I have collected little river rocks and I’ve wanted to build them into furnishings.

CASEY MCCAFFERTY casey-mccafferty.com Natural Inclination: Growing up the fourth of five children in Staten Island, my parents let me dabble with any creative endeavor I was obsessed with at that stage. I built computers, worked on mopeds, made fiberglass structures and erected tree forts. Furniture design and woodcraft took hold after graduating college. Coastal Significance: Living on both coasts—the East as a child and the West (Los Angeles) as an adult—I have always loved walks on the beach searching for debris. The textures, colors and overall air of flotsam and jetsam are a huge influence on my work. History Lesson: I’ve been reading a lot about Constantin Brâncuși and Auguste Rodin lately—both famous sculptors with different styles. Their dedication and obsessiveness in what they deemed quality drive me to always dive into and believe in my work. On the Horizon: The “Hello World” table— I’ve had a creative angst regarding the design of the common table since the top will always be a flat surface. So, I made a simple switch of letting the base flow through the tabletop allowing the eye to wander from bottom to top. 060 / LUXESOURCE.COM

JUDE HESLIN-DI LEO Formative Years: I always wanted to be an artist, but it wasn’t until I took a class at Pratt on industrial design that I connected strongly with the work and felt it was my path. While I was pretty lousy at woodworking during those college years, it wasn’t until a few years later during a summer job with Johnny Geraghty, a custom furniture maker, that I learned the traditional methods of Japanese tansu. With the intricacies involved and no allowances for error, my fabrication skills jumped to the next level. Mutual Affection: My biggest early influence was when my friend Bernardo Guillermo and I started designing and making furniture together after graduating college in 2005. We influenced each other— pushing and leaning on one another to make those early pieces happen. Living in Harmony: Earlier this year my family and I moved out of New York City to Cold Spring, New York, where we live on top of a mountain surrounded by wildlife. Everyone in our community does their part to preserve the area’s tranquility and living here has had a tremendous impact on how I connect with the earth, especially when it comes to my work. American Craftsmanship: To me, it is the integration of fine arts, industrialism and technology. It is also about keeping the celebration of the artisan alive.

JUDE HESLIN-DI LEO: VIGNETTE, JON VON PAMER; PORTRAIT, GIEVES ANDERSON. ASPEN GOLANN: PORTRAIT, CHAD WEEDEN.

judeheslindileo.com

ASPEN GOLANN aspengolann.com Go-to Materials: Domestic hardwoods, especially walnut and maple. Walnut is so classic and the grain is so rich, while the bright, simple tones of maple give furniture such lightness. When bleached, the pieces emanate an almost otherworldly glow. Studio Influence: During my residency here at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina, I keep an unruly set of three-ring binders filled with reference images of Greek and Roman statues, iconic pieces of American furniture and objects by unnamed makers that I’ve spotted in thrift stores. Southern Charm: I love the elegance and restraint of traditional furniture forms, especially their properness relating to decorum. While my pieces inspirit antique furniture, I try to dust off the stuffy aesthetic related to classic lines by simplifying, rearranging or recontextualizing older forms and styles. Playing Favorites: Made with my good friend and mentor, Peter Galbert, and commissioned for the wellknown English designer Beata Heuman, the Windsor Settee has so many opposing qualities; it utilizes old-school Windsor chair construction, while the updated proportions and curving of the entire back and undercarriage give it a fluid, sculptural feeling. 062 / LUXESOURCE.COM

WHAT’S in STORE

KES STUDIO

Interior designer Kara Smith is known for her residential, restaurant and hotel designs, among them celebrated florist Eric Buterbaugh’s Los Angeles atelier. Now Smith is launching a new project, KES Studio, to explore her broader interest in creating a fuller lifestyle brand for clients. With a background that includes event planning and even contemporary women’s fashion, Smith’s is a macroscopic view, and one we can’t wait to watch as it unfolds. An online shop is in the works, too. Here, Luxe learns more about her new venture. kes-studio.com What inspired you to launch KES Studio? It’s a great vehicle for me to express my passion for design with an inspiring clientele. Having a brand with my name on it allows for more latitude in pushing the envelope creatively. Talk about the services you’ll provide. A huge focus is on curating interesting pieces of art from around the globe and collaborating with artisans to fashion a more personalized lifestyle for my clients. Current projects: The Pendry Park City, a Las Vegas hotel wing dedicated to high rollers, and a renovation for a well-known recording artist. What products will be online? Accessories, custom textiles, bespoke furnishings and vintage finds, like a limited-edition bronze gaming console. I’ll also be launching collaborations with manufacturers, such as Oaklore and Marc Phillips.

OPEN HOUSE SHOPS + SHOWROOMS

Poliform (right) has renovated its flagship showroom (8818 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles). The remodeled 7,200-square-foot store showcases the brand’s innovative furnishings, highlighting how versatile its elements can be: glass walls and partitions, and collections that include closets, wall systems, kitchens and furniture. Brook Perdigon’s latest textile collection, Adaptation, gives classic patterns the designer’s signature imperfect twist (available at Nicky Rising, 8625 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood). The geometric collection includes four new hand-drawn, hand-screened patterns in multiple colorways, with a focus on geometrics. L.A. furnishings company MASHstudios (2611 W. Exposition Blvd., Los Angeles) has expanded to a 70,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Buena Park, giving them state-of-the-art technology and the ability to scale production and control every element from quality to delivery schedule. They also have full-service millwork capabilities. In addition to collaborating with architects and designers to produce custom workplace furniture, they manufacture a residential line, LAXseries. Interior designer Denise Morrison has launched the latest additions to her House of Morrison collection (1801 Westcliff Drive, Newport Beach). Handmade in Orange County, designs include such charmingly named pieces as the Cuddle Chair. All of Morrison’s pieces are offered in a selection of fabrics, leathers and wood finishes. 064 / luxesource.com

POST MASTER @punkmetender

WHO: French-born street artist Punk Me Tender keeps his identity secret, but his works have amassed a celebrity following. WHAT: Whether it’s graffiti, painting or photography, his pieces are imbued with the fantastical and the unexpected. Recent projects include a mural at the Line Hotel’s new club, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and a pop-up at Fred Segal Sunset.

ALISON KOCH OF OUTFIT HOME

For nearly two decades, interior designer Alison Koch has been honing her craft. She got her start with two well-known names—San Francisco designers Orlando Diaz-Azcuy and Waldo Fernandez—but it wasn’t until striking out on her own with her firm, Outfit Home, that Koch truly refined her vision. Now, with her Hollywood shop, everyone can pop in to see what’s currently catching her eye, from one-off household accessories to inspired gifts. outfithome.com

IN HIS WORDS: “I love to utilize Instagram to showcase my artwork. It allows for an unfiltered exchange of emotions with the audience and I can focus on my artwork, not my appearance. The beauty of Instagram is its ability make an image travel the world virtually. No other platform can do this for you.”

You founded your firm in 2012. Why was it important to add a shop? I’d been collecting vintage furniture for clients and always loved the idea of a store, since I was working from home. A coworker spotted a vacant plumbing supply in Hollywood with a homemade “for rent” sign—it was a bit of a risk, but the space was just too cute to pass up. It’s a pretty quirky spot! I hope this location feels like a discovery for shoppers. The neighborhood has really grown in recent years: Marco Lorenzetto’s art studio is on the corner, Show Gallery features cool artists, Blackwood has coffee and treats, and Bohemia has all sorts of elixirs and tea.

MEET the MAKER

What will visitors find? Vintage furnishings, lighting and accessories, plus our Maison Louis Marie candles. I also have a soft spot for midcentury Italian furniture, but we have items from all eras. Artworks include pieces from Heather James Fine Art on consignment, oil portraits, flea market photos and abstract watercolors. Currently, my favorite piece is a WPA-era educational diorama from 1930.

In 2015, French artist Claire Tabouret moved to Los Angeles on an impulse. She had never visited the city, and she didn’t know a soul—she simply sought “a fresh start and the adventure of a new place,” she says. “I loved L.A. straightaway—the light, the diversity of architecture, the murals, the vegetation, the coyotes at night. It’s a city full of secrets and mysteries.” She found a Frogtown studio and began producing works that have garnered local and international attention. The upcoming opening of the Pinault Foundation’s new Paris museum, La Bourse du Commerce, will feature some of Tabouret’s work, for which she says, “I am very honored.” Tabouret has created new paintings that will be on display there, and she is working on a forthcoming retrospective spanning 2010 to 2020, to be published by Perrotin Editions. clairetabouret.com

WHY: Inspiration comes from the intersection of gritty street life and couture fashion, which the artist takes to a hyper-glamorous state with dynamic colors and painting techniques, Swarovski crystals and silk flowers.

LAUNCH SERENA DUGAN

After more than a decade as a creative executive in the design industry, Serena Dugan has launched an eponymous collection, Serena Dugan Studio. An “ode to wanderlust,” she says, we’re taking a closer look at what’s inspired her to take this leap. serenadugan.com Why launch a solo venture? My career has been spent creating textiles, objects, artwork and spaces that make our homes a spirited reflection of us. As we draw into our homes now, I’m even more certain of the importance of this mission. What kinds of pieces might we find? The Objects collection will be a rotating compendium of pieces that I source from around the world. I expect that the collection will include collaborations with artisans I admire—a platform for innovative pieces like hand-painted wool dhurrie rugs.

How do your paintings relate to your textiles and wallpapers? When I form an idea, it’s either better explored on a canvas or through pattern. Painting allows me to focus on composition, layering and gesture, while pattern is all about repetition, placement, movement and harmony. Does the California lifestyle influence your work? Undoubtedly. I have always wished to work outside a paradigm that others followed, because I wanted to express things differently. Living here, I feel unspoken support to push, express and innovate.

CHADDOCK x MARK D. SIKES Mark D. Sikes brings his elevated California design ethos to a curated, customizable furniture collection with North Carolina-based Chaddock and its CEO, Andrew Crone. Walk us through the inspiration. MDS: We wanted to create allAmerican, versatile pieces. The design of several items was spurred by antiques I’m often hunting down for clients. What attracted you to this collaboration? AC: Mark is a wonderful partner for us because he understands the power of timeless elements and personalized details in a way that customers and clients understand them, too. Tell us about the materials. AC: Quality is the bedrock of what we do, so all of the “ingredients” are really important. We used a mixture of oak and maple wood species for the case goods. We love the dining chair and its versatility. MDS: Yes, it feels both feminine and masculine, and the scale works as a dining chair, a desk chair or a side chair. I also love the beautiful detail of the lattice back and the cane seat.

With its delicate scale and slender arms, the Myrtle Dining Chair is not limited to the dining room; it can easily adapt to many spaces in the home. Here, it’s shown in Farrow & Ball’s No. 210 Blue Ground with the worn technique (left) and 900 Ebony finish with gilt accents. chaddockhome.com

ROBERT KIME x TORY BURCH

Share the inspiration for the collection. RK: Our trip together to Japan was certainly the impetus. We went to wonderful places, stacked with beautiful documents but both gravitated toward the same designs. What excites you about Robert’s design aesthetic? TB: I’ve always been a huge admirer of Robert’s work, particularly his take on country homes. His approach is eclectic. I love how he has no rules, combining objects from different cultures and time periods. Nothing feels too designed. The patterns are so charming—what sentiment were you going for? RK: We leaned heavily into indigo, as there was so much of that simple dying technique found on our journey. The patterns are delightful, some small and some less so—but they each tell a story. How would we find them in your home? TB: I’ll mix and match the fabrics—nothing too perfect. The Ume pattern (left) was inspired by an original Sarasa fragment from the Edo period and is still considered exotic and valuable in Japanese society today. Decorated with birds and bamboo, the Takeyabu design was drawn from a Bingata fabric, which traditionally depicts natural motifs. robertkime.com

SOCIETY SOCIAL x ARIEL OKIN When it comes to offering a fresh take on classic furniture, the seven-piece assortment by Society Social founder Roxy Te and New York-based designer Ariel Okin does just that. This is a perfect match. How did you meet? RT: We connected in the modern way, via Instagram, chatting about everything from motherhood to design. Soon after, the idea of our line was born. Favorite part of collaborating? AO: Going back and forth on the sketches was such a fun experience for me. My inspiration images were really brought to life through Society Social’s talented artisans. Talk to us about your stylistic approach. RT: We wanted a look that is a soft ode to the classics but still evokes the comfort of home—designs that welcome effortless and inspired living. What’s important to keep in mind when designing furniture? AO: End use! I ultimately felt drawn to design a furniture line because I wanted to create pieces that I couldn’t find for my own clients. It’s important to really zero in on how the pieces will be used.

ATELIER VIME x FARROW & BALL

How did the partnership with Farrow & Ball transpire? AW: Our world is intimately linked to Provence and our 18th-century house in Vallabrègues. For a long time, we had considered recreating our objects in color. The methods used by Farrow & Ball fit our artisanal and sustainable approach perfectly. Favorite moment? CC: Like us, commitment to traditional production methods is important to Atelier Vime, so it was great to see this celebrated with handcrafted woodwork. The paint really brings the pieces to life. CC: Strong colors like these certainly add a statement to a room, but when used on wicker, they frame the light and respond to it. What tenets do you consider when designing? AW: It has to be functional and poetic. I love to imagine a story behind each item. One of Atelier Vime’s first designs, the Gabriel Ceiling Light harks back to a round utility basket originally made by the company in the 1950s and used for collecting fruit. Today, the wicker is cultivated and handcrafted in Provence. It’s shown here in Farrow & Ball’s Off-Black (left) and Cola paint colors. ateliervime.com; farrow-ball.com

B&B ITALIA x NAOTO FUKASAWA The connection runs deep for B&B Italia’s CEO Gilberto Negrini and Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa, who teamed up again to create Ayana, a minimalist assemblage of outdoor items. What attracted you to collaborate with Fukasawa? GN: His pure, light vision of design and the fact that his products are minimal and precise in their shapes and details. Most rewarding part of the process? NF: The most joyful stage for me is visiting the factory, seeing the prototypes and continuing to refine the pieces. We love the use of natural teak. GN: The unpainted teak allows the piece to age and evolve in the most genuine way. This project also has a green soul as all the materials can be separated and disposed of with respect for the environment at the end of the product’s life cycle. What excites you most about the collection? NF: The unique combination of essential shapes and natural wood is so elegant and sophisticated.

At a moment when our homes are more important than ever, kitchen and bath spaces have become the ultimate safe havens—somewhere we can pause, unwind and take comfort at the end of the day. Today’s designers are incorporating minimalistic layouts, natural materials and soothing color palettes to create airy environments. Designer Jennifer Kranitz of Project Interiors took those elements to heart for a spacious Chicago bathroom imagining “a quiet, gentle setting where the owners can hit mute on the chaos of life.”

Designer Jennifer Kranitz created an elegant master bathroom in Studio Gang’s iconic Aqua Tower in Chicago with tranquility in mind. The subdued gray-toned walls and flooring were customized in Tadelakt Plaster and fabricated by Chicago Ornamental Plastering. A brass stool by Noir punctuates the neutral palette in front of an MTI bathtub with Hansgrohe fittings.

Nestled high above the sprawling city of Chicago is this ideal urban oasis by designer Jennifer Kranitz of Project Interiors. Here, she walks us through the spectacular space, which involved combining two units in the luxury skyscraper. projectinteriors.com

Tell us about the decision to use plaster. Plaster is the main finish here and is incorporated on the floors, walls, tub, shower—everything! It’s very durable and low-maintenance. The various applications create movement and allow your eye to travel around the space. Plus, the material almost has a velvety look, which adds a subtle texture and scale to this very large room. What should be top of mind when designing a bathroom? While you want it to be pretty, it also has to work! Early on in the process, consider the functionality and how your client will live in the space. We were mindful of elements such as circulation, point of entry and storage while building this relaxing refuge.

That view! This bathroom offers an amazing cityscape. We took into consideration everything happening outside when creating the design. We wanted it to be soft and serene in contrast to the city life visible through the floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows.

In a Dallas kitchen, architect Jason Erik Smith chose Ann Sacks’ Pietra Statuario for the island, which features a Houzer sink and Blanco faucet. “With four children, the island needed to be heroic,” Smith recalls.

THIS KITCHEN PROVES THAT AN AESTHETICS-FIRST APPROACH DOESN’T HAVE TO SACRIFICE FUNCTIONALITY. WRITTEN BY GRACE BEULEY HUNT

The words “calm” and “kitchen” don’t always walk hand in hand. But for a Texas couple with four children, a Zen cooking hub was wish number one for their new home in the tony Dallas suburb of University Park.

With its organic material procession, the storagesavvy kitchen flows seamlessly into the openconcept great room—but that’s not to say it feels

indistinct. To delineate, the architects carried the rift-sawn white-oak flooring up the wall and across the ceiling like a ribbon on a gift. “What this does is create a room within a room,” Smith explains. “It’s a strategy we like to use to create intimacy within a big, open space.” Rounding out the interiors, designer Jean Liu employed furnishings with clean lines and stalwart tendencies. A laminate top Saarinen table joined by walnut Cherner dining chairs creates a dégagé set-up for homework sessions and cocktail parties alike, while soaring Pindler curtain sheers and custom sisal rugs lend warmth and softness to the minimal scheme. “A limited color palette will always tone down hustle and bustle,” notes the designer, adding, “Every last detail in this space is choreographed, which creates a sense of serenity and calmness.” smitharc.com; jeanliudesign.com

PALETTE CLEANSER

“The idea was not to think of it as a kitchen, but as a beautiful space that happens to have all the amenities and comforts of one,” explains architect Jason Erik Smith. To meet this brief, the team at Smitharc Architects prioritized concealing as much visual clutter as possible. Along the north wall, a series of discreet doors encloses both refrigerator and dishware storage. Beyond, in the handsome back-of-house area, a shallow corridor hosts built-in small appliances before revealing a walk-in pantry and coffee bar. And equal parts design statement and workhorse, the impressive, 15-foot-long sintered porcelain island houses two dishwashers and a downdraft cooktop, in addition to generous drawer space.

“I have always been a minimalist at heart and believe that there is so much consideration that goes into beautiful simplicity, explains London-based designer Alix Lawson. “The space had to be stylish yet kid-friendly since it opens to the main area,” says designer Morgan Newfield of the playroom in a midcentury Pacific Palisades home by Edward H. Fickett. There, she combined an RH sectional and tables and a side chair from Blu Dot with an ottoman from Lawson-Fenning and a rug from Silk Road Rug.

D

esigner Morgan Newfield knew that the renovation of a midcentury home for longtime clients would require a thoughtful approach. She understood the importance of preserving architect Edward H. Fickett’s design—she also wanted to capture the carefree spirit of the era in which it was built. Disneyland had just opened, the Capitol Records building was transforming Hollywood’s skyline, and Fickett was about to begin work on Dodger Stadium. “Those all conjure up images of modernism, palm trees— that history was an awesome addition to lovingly restoring this home,” says Newfield. Enlarging the home without changing its original footprint required a particularly skilled team, so the owners brought on architect Scott Prentice and general contractors Nathan and Trish Dixon. “We inherited an untouched home—that’s virtually unheard of,” says Prentice. To guide the renovation, the architect—like Newfield—looked to the structure for inspiration. “The nature of the post and beam construction laid it all out for us for the most part,” he says. “It also served as a structural goal to try to adhere as closely to the original ‘light’ construction while still satisfying upgraded seismic codes and maintaining the beauty of the walls of glass and floating roofs with large, almost impossible, overhangs.”

6/10/20 12:03 PM

The owners were all in from the beginning. “They chose this house knowing it would be a process,” says Prentice. “We worked collaboratively with them early on and explained how the most sustainable move we can make is to use what we can, if we’re fortunate enough to have it.” The team had plenty to work with, including the home’s original redwood siding. “It was all old-growth redwood!” Nathan Dixon says, sounding as enthusiastic as a fortyniner striking gold. Every piece was carefully removed and then reused. “From a builder’s standpoint, remodeling is harder than a new build,” he shares. “But we can put in all new systems, electrical, plumbing and heating, and keep original elements, so the home has the characteristics of an older house yet performs like a new one.” The interiors, too, honor the original spirit of the home. “We wanted to preserve certain aspects, like the cinder

LX_LA62_HOM_Newfield_12.indd 125

block in the kitchen and the living room,” says Newfield, but it was a nearly fresh start when it came to the furnishings. The designer chose mainly custom and contemporary-leaning pieces, all with a minimalist, naturalistic look that complements the post and beam style. “At its root, the house is midcentury modern, but the design transcends that aesthetic. This is contemporary with a midcentury modern backdrop—the styles play off each other. It’s eclectic, not stiff,” she says. Pointing to the fluid lines of the painting above the living room sofa, an acrylic on linen commissioned from artist Kristen Giorgi, Newfield adds, “The furniture, textiles and art soften the house.” In the same spirit, she wove in a vintage Swedish rug to the entryway, but not where you might expect it. “Displayed on the wall, you can appreciate its beauty. It brings warmth and texture,” she says.

The open-plan kitchen was designed to be “clean, warm and inviting,” says Newfield. Walnut casework by Cabinet Creations—accented by Emtek hardware—defines the space. Counter stools by Room & Board stand in front of the island finished with Caesarstone countertops. Appliances include Miele ovens, a Wolf cooktop and integrated Sub-Zero refrigeration; the sink is Kohler, and the fittings are Dornbracht.

6/10/20 12:03 PM

“Life is super hectic when you have four children,” says Newfield, so she designed the master bedroom to be a “comfortable and stylish oasis for these busy parents.” A seating area features a chair from Design Within Reach and a Lawson-Fenning sofa in a Romo solid. Above the Room & Board console is a painting by Morgan Everhart. A rug from Woven tops hardwood flooring from Perfec Floors.

Newfield’s approach to each room is highly considered, with a particular interest in artisanal objects like a lamp by Gabriela Valenzuela-Hirsch in the living room made of solid Guanacaste wood. “Its overscale nature fits perfectly, and it takes on an architectural feel when juxtaposed against the wood ceilings, cinder block walls and concrete floors,” the designer notes. Elsewhere, a modular pendant consisting of a conical shade and brass counterweight illuminates the bar. There are whimsical dashes, too: the low-slung, bright yellow chair in the playroom and a wallcovering featuring exuberant blooms against a dark background. “It’s just very successful,” Newfield says of the overall result. “The home isn’t lacking anything.” Neither are its outdoor spaces. “We furnished the exterior to look like an outdoor room and feel collected,” Newfield says of the deck’s seating areas, where she placed living room-worthy pieces, such as a Bari Ziperstein table in a deep green that echoes the hue of the grass. “I wanted it to feel like a resort, with pops of color and interesting shapes.” Large planters tie the entertaining areas to the verdant garden, which was designed by 3 Pinos. “Inherent in the best midcentury houses is an embrace of the naturalness of indoor-outdoor materials, an honesty in approach, and a courtyard that brings it all together,” says Prentice. “This house is seamless and timeless. You can’t pinpoint it as a restoration. It just works.”

rt is too often treated as an afterthought in interior design, the finishing touch added to a room that’s already painted, papered and furnished. But during the renovation of this Palm Desert retreat, the exact opposite happened: The homeowners’ contemporary art collection dictated the design decisions—right down to the size and placement of a living room wall. For designer Townsend Lloyd, creating gallery-style spaces sans museum-like sterility was the primary challenge of the project. Happily, she arrived armed with an intimate knowledge of this particular property. The house—one of architect John Elgin Woolf’s famed pink Hollywood Regency-style originals at Marrakesh Country Club—belonged to her great-grandfather. And the current homeowner? It’s her own mother. Lloyd spent many childhood holidays at the house, which her great-grandparents bought in 1972 and passed down to her mother and aunts about 15 years ago. Until last year, it was an essentially untouched time capsule of ’70s chic. “The whole house was done in coordinating pink and green, with green striped chairs, pink shag carpeting and built-in mirrors—which apparently were really in back then. It had its own charm because it was so dated,” says Lloyd, but adds, “The house was a great template to work from. A lot of what was put in place is still relevant.” Lloyd teamed up with architect Rod Youngson (himself a resident of Marrakesh Country Club) to reconfigure the layout, paying particular attention to natural light and sight lines. Among many high-impact changes—placing retractable glass doors throughout the house, carving out a powder room, adding skylights to the master bathroom— they extended the house by 10 feet on either end. This allowed for a larger kitchen and a more formal dining room in place of a laundry area that had once blocked a

gorgeous hilltop view. Another key metamorphosis: A hallway leading to the to the guest room and powder room terminates in an atrium, where a sculpture by Alexander Caldwell stands on a plinth. “Instead of a passage that ends in a wall, it’s a focal point that lets so much light into the house,” says Lloyd. Extra bedrooms were also a priority, so a “bunk room” with queen-size beds was placed in an area formerly intended as golf cart parking. Additionally, a small casita with its own entrance was thoughtfully attached to the existing home to serve as a more private place for nonfamily guests. “Marrakesh essentially has four plans—A, B, C and D—and we’ve taken a ‘B’ footprint and substantially changed the layout inside,” says the homeowner. “We took a sophisticated approach to a renovation, one that really pushed the boundaries.” Museum-white walls serve to brighten the space and provide a blank canvas for the homeowners’ collection, and no room was considered too casual for art. French artist Bernard Cathelin’s work hangs in the powder room, for instance, and vibrant works by American artist Julie Speidel and Canadian William Perehudoff are framed in the kitchen. The living room’s configuration centers around two oversize pieces: an Ashley Collins canvas atop the fireplace (which was sized specifically to complement it), and across the room, a lavender-hued landscape by John Evans. “Part of the reason we decided to close the kitchen off versus doing an open floor plan was to create a wall large enough for that landscape,” explains Lloyd. “We literally built the wall for it.” Outdoor areas don’t lack for dramatic art either. Most distinctively, a massive slab of marble is mounted above the courtyard’s sitting area. It’s a statement stone that Lloyd and her mother fell in love with while shopping for the fireplace’s marble surround—and re-designated it as weatherproof art. As remarkable as the artwork is, what’s not prominent is equally noteworthy. Flooring and furnishings are deliberately muted. Window treatments are nonexistent or minimal. The streamlined kitchen includes a workstation hidden behind the cabinet doors, and the television is stashed within a nearly-invisible electronics “garage” in the living room, cleverly rolling out only when in use. “I like a linear, geometric approach with straight lines and no clutter,” declares the homeowner. “It’s all a good foundation for the collection.” The house was recently a stop on a community fundraising home tour—and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. But for Lloyd and her mother, the realization of the house’s next chapter is what counts. “My hope is that it stays in the family for years to come, and that future generations like my choice in tile,” the homeowner says. “I think my grandparents would be thrilled by what we’ve done.”

Designer Townsend Lloyd envisioned the entry to a John Elgin Woolf home at Palm Desert’s Marrakesh Country Club as a gallery-like space. “It was a place to showcase the Bernard Cathelin painting and the contemporary sculptural stools by Julie Speidel,” says Lloyd. “The fabulous part about the stools is that they also provide seating without obviously looking like it.”

Left: “One of the most interesting pieces in the living room is the custom coffee table from Formations,” says the designer. “The table has three legs and is visually dramatic. We felt the strong, sculptural lines would anchor the space—it is truly stunning!” The artwork is by Ashley Collins. Opposite: Lloyd took her palette cues for the living room from the John Evans landscape. “We loved the calm lavenders, greens and soft neutrals punctuated by subtle hints of orange and yellow,” she notes. The hues also appear in the re-covered Flexform sofas, custom Elizabeth Eakins carpet and the Rogers & Goffigon wool sateen on the Holly Hunt armchairs.

“It’s more popular for Marrakesh renovators to remove the wall between the kitchen and living room and create an open-concept great room but, here, the homeowners opted for a galley-style kitchen that’s really functional,” says general contractor Steven Shields. Near the breakfast bar furnished with Roche Bobois stools are a pair of Julie Speidel paintings. The Dornbracht faucets are from Ferguson.

Since the guest room is visible from the entry courtyard, it was important that the decor feel cohesive with the rest of the house. An Aerin lamp, a nightstand by S.R. Gambrel for The Lacquer Company and a Serena & Lily chair recall the home’s neutral palette. Matouk linens dress the bed.

TO CAPTURE THE SERENE SPIRIT OF AN NBA GREAT, A DESIGN TEAM CREATES A PEACEFUL PLAYA DEL REY BEACH HOUSE. WRITTEN BY MARY JO BOWLING / PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEGHAN BEIERLE-O’BRIEN

S

tanding on the beach in Playa del Rey surrounded by his five children and 11 grandchildren, Phil Jackson, one of the greatest NBA coaches in history, realized he wasn’t ready to sell his house, a dwelling perched right on the shore. When Phil purchased the waterside dwelling some 20 years prior, it was a matter of convenience. He had just been hired to coach the Los Angeles Lakers and, as he says: “For my lifestyle, living close to work and an airport were prerequisites.” This home, then a duplex, fit that bill and more. Over the years, nearly all of Phil’s children had lived in the secondary unit at one time or another, making it something of an anchor for the NBA family. As life changed—Phil retired, and his children started their own families—he often contemplated selling. But with his clan surrounding him on the sand that day, he knew he wanted to change his living quarters but not his address. “It was one of those 72-degree spring days, and I realized I didn’t want to let it go,” he says. “I sat down with Chelsea the next weekend to begin planning.” Chelsea is designer Chelsea Sachs, his second eldest daughter, who was more than happy to help. Conventional wisdom has it that working with family is a bad idea, but for her, it felt familiar. “As a designer, I get to know my clients really well, and sometimes it takes time to develop a deep understanding and trust,” she says. “But with my father, that groundwork was already there.” Rounding out the team was designer Patrick Ediger, who conceived the interior layout and provided all of the architectural drawings and elevations for the endeavor and day-to-day project management. Ediger and Sachs

LX_LA62_HOM_EdigerSachs_10.indd 146

quickly determined the best way remake the home was to combine the spaces and start nearly from scratch. “The location is unique, but the 1980s architecture was not,” says Ediger. “The spaces were dated and chopped up. To make it cohesive and unified, we had to take it down to the studs.” The home was then reassembled to create a single dwelling with a family room and bunk room on the lowest floor, the master suite and guest bedrooms on the second level and, on the third story, among other spaces, a living room with incredible views of the ocean and, on clear days, Catalina. It’s that landscape and Phil’s life story that drove the home’s interiors. In the living room, where oversize rollaway doors frame the waves, the team relocated the fireplace from the north to the south wall in order to optimize the seated view. The pale blues of the ocean and the tawny neutrals and soft buffs of the beach are on full display in a pair of custom sofas dressed in a pale sandy upholstery, a rug with a watery palette of grays and blues and a bespoke coffee table-ottoman topped with buttery caramel leather. “I wanted it to feel as if the interior melded with the exterior,” says Sachs. In the master suite, the bedroom enjoys the same views from a slightly lower perspective. The bathroom is sited just behind it, and the home’s original creators maximized the natural light and sight lines in the space by installing an oversize interior window between the two. To kick the glam up a notch, a bronze-toned, one-way mirror replaced the window. From the bathroom, you can still see the waves; but in the bedroom it is opaque and reflects the water, creating something akin to an ever-shifting mural. A patterned rug, the vintage capiz shell light fixture and the coffee table in the nook bring in the colors as well as textures of the beach. But in this house, soul is just as important as style. “Everything tells a story, every detail brings nuance,” notes Ediger. Most of the rooms contain pieces of the Asian antique collection Phil has spent years accumulating. And, despite the fact that nearly all of the furniture and the countertops are specifically sized to his 6-foot-8inch frame, his minimally adorned mediation room is his favorite space. “My father is a Zen Buddhist, and the home embodies his quiet, calming spirit,” says Sachs. Perhaps that spirit is what keeps pulling the family back to this home. “It’s now very open, with spaces the whole family can use, but there are still places for solitude and spots where you can withdraw and watch the kids play in the sand,” says Phil. “This house has been a constant in our lives, and when we are all here, it’s really special.”

6/10/20 11:22 AM

“The fireplace is made of a beautiful travertine tile reminiscent of the colors of the beach outside,” says designer Chelsea Sachs of the stone from Artistic Tile surrounding the living room fireplace in her father Phil Jackson’s Playa del Rey home. A Michael Berman Limited lounge chair in Mokum fabric picks up the sandy hues. Sachs teamed with designer Patrick Ediger on the renovation.
