WELCOME TO THE SPRING/SUMMER 2017 EDITION OF OUR VERY POPULAR

COLLECTION MAGAZINE.

AS EVER, I REFLECT ON THE LAST 6 MONTHS AND THE WAY THE HOUSING MARKET HAS CHANGED AND THE SURPRISING ELECTION RESULTS IN AMERICA WITH THEIR NEW PRESIDENT.

WE HAVE MANY EXCITING NEW PROJECTS LAUNCHING SOON, MOST NOTABLY SMITH’S DOCK, THE MOST SIGNIFICANT REGENERATION OF HOUSING WITHIN THE NORTH EAST OF ENGLAND AT THIS CURRENT TIME.

FACT 1

The housing market is directly affected by the media and this has been fact for many years. Having seen a good, steady recovery in 2014, many agents were disappointed by the media coverage of the general election in 2015, which led to artificially low levels of buyers in the traditional months of February through to May when the election was held. The anticipated coalition government turned into a Conservative majority and the market settled. In 2016, we hoped once again for a steady market, but Brexit fears and wild statements about the impact of Brexit yet again created a significant wave of uncertainty and led to poorer sales than we would have hoped for in the run up to the Election. The recent election of President Trump indicated the disparity that currently exists between the majority of the public and the politicians within their country. That same disparity was reinforced in our own Brexit vote, where the majority clearly made their feelings known. Most estate agents welcome certainty and stability. None of us welcome the peaks and the troughs of the housing market demand and supply. A steady ship is a far safer ship! I thought I would reflect on the current housing market facts and statistics so that the public can make up their own mind about where our future may be going. These statistics have been taken from the Land Registry and the Office of National Statistics. – In the 13 years between 2001 and 2014, the population increased by 10% from over 59 million to 65 million people in the UK.

FACT 2 – Over a similar period of 10 years, the number of private

residential dwellings occupied remained about the same, yet private rented dwellings doubled to over 5 million.

FACT 3

– The number of property transactions in the UK in 2006 was around 1.67 million and they nearly halved in 2009 to 860,000. In 2013 there were just over 1 million, with steady growth forecast for the next few years. Whilst owner occupiers are about the same level, council housing dwellings have dropped from 2.8 million to 1.7 million.

FACT 4 – UK house-building new dwellings dropped from a peak in the

1970s of 375,000 dwellings per annum, to nearly 220,000 per annum in 2004 and similar in 2007. In recent years, we have been barely able to achieve 140,000 dwellings per annum.

FACT 5

– The North East of England has the slowest increase in house prices out of all the regions in the UK since the crash.

FACT 6 – In 2006 the average house price in the UK was £165,000. In

March 2016, it is £218,000. Yet in some parts of County Durham, the average price is £24,500, compared to £2,920,000 in Westminster, London!

I am not a professor in economics, nor do I have a degree in it, but these facts clearly indicate to me that the public are living longer, the population is increasing in number and builders have not built as many houses as they used to in recent years (although thank goodness this is now increasing!). Therefore, due to financial concerns, limited cash availability and restricted mortgage and finance availability, we have seen more people moving into the rented sector than we have into private dwellings. Locally in the North East, I see many areas having homes where the rental payment is significantly higher than a 75-80% mortgage would be of that same property. Over recent months, we have seen clear indications of house prices rising in the popular areas, especially the suburbs of Newcastle and prime coastal towns and villages, as well as the beautiful areas in the Tyne Valley. This is very much focused upon houses under £500,000 for the majority and in some cases just over. The demand for housing in excess of £1 million is improving and we have now seen some very good sales being achieved just outside of Newcastle and Ponteland, Darras Hall and in midNorthumberland. This is encouraging, but we are nowhere near back to the volume of trade in excess of £1 million that we used to see in the period of 2005-2006. It is obvious that the North East is catching up with other parts of the country and there is no doubt that we have many reasons to do so, given the quality of life and beauty of the north-eastern coastline, as well as its countryside and history. If the housing market is allowed to continue to trade without fear of extreme and irresponsible media reporting, then I see a bright future ahead this year. We have many exciting new projects launching soon, most notably Smith’s Dock, the most significant regeneration of housing within the North East of England at this current time. This site provides a joint venture between Places for People and Urban Splash and will launch its first 34 houses in May 2017. Our waiting list is already building nicely and you can find further details at www.smithsdock.co.uk or telephone 0191 580 7999. In addition to this site, there are a significant number of other exciting new projects taking place where we will be able to offer a variety of homes and dwellings to suit all ages, profiles and families. Through increased choice, freedom of movement and quiet confidence returning in the housing sector, house prices will rise. Here at Sanderson Young we look forward to meeting and exceeding the expectations of our clients in everything we do. If I can help you in any way with your intended move, whether to buy, to sell, or to rent, please do not hesitate to contact myself and my team. STATE OF THE MARKET WE ASK SANDERSON YOUNG’S JANET HOPKINSON & NICOLA OSBORNE TO COMMENT ON KEY TRENDS IN THE CURRENT NORTH EAST PROPERTY MARKET…

DO WOMEN REALLY MAKE BETTER SALES NEGOTIATORS THAN MEN?

JANET HOPKINSON Operations Director

T: 0191 223 3500 janet.hopkinson@ sandersonyoung.co.uk

I took note recently of an article by Richard Rawlings, founder of Estate Agency Insight, who marvelled at the lack of gender diversity in our industry. In the article, Rawlings expressed surprise that in the UK so many estate agencies were male dominated when, in his opinion, women have the natural qualities to make better agents given their higher emotional intelligence, ability to build relationships, multi tasking and more trustworthy character in a sales environment. It’s true that those characteristics are essential to successful estate agency. The ability to build positive relationships is a key attribute we look for in our staff and effective multi-tasking is particularly sought after. The property sales process often has multiple layers and demanding third parties. It requires an organised mind to keep on top of the various elements of the process to reach a successful conclusion to the benefit of all involved. This might just come more naturally for a woman to handle. Given my own experience I believe that men have just as much to offer in a sales negotiator role as a woman but it did cause me to stop and consider the gender balance in our own team. Sanderson Young bucks the industry trend and has a much higher proportion of female sales negotiators to male. Could this be the secret behind our success?

NICOLA OSBORNE REFLECTS ON MOVES BY THE GOVERNMENT TO STIMULATE HOUSING REFORM

NICOLA OSBORNE Corporate Client Director T:0191 223 3500 nicola.osborne@ sandersonyoung.co.uk

It was encouraging to see new build housing get a real boost on the back of the recent government white paper outlining reform for the residential housing market. One of the key proposals suggested councils should produce five year plans to directly address housing shortages in authority areas. This would mean land is directly released in a way to meet local supply and demand. Currently, 40% of local authorities do not have an up to date plan which reflects household growth – a worrying sign that the number of houses being built in many areas is in no way reflective of genuine need. Another key element of the white paper was financial assistance for smaller, independent developers to help diversify, not only the type of homes being built, but also the kind of schemes being progressed. Currently, 10 companies build 60% of new homes in the UK and, if successful, this move could support smaller firms to produce increasing numbers of bespoke and unique residential schemes. It was a white paper that offered genuine solutions to address the worrying shortfall in the number and type of new homes being built. Given our experience of working with local developers, as well as national housebuilders, we welcome this move and would be happy to advise any developers looking to acquire land or landowners looking to sell.

“THE BOMBING MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO STAY AND BECAUSE THE BORDER WITH IRAN WAS CLOSED WE HAD TO RESORT TO THE MOUNTAINS…

FROM THE

TO THE NEIL GORDON TALKS TO

FROM THE PROFESSOR DEIARY TO THE KADER

ABOUT HIS LIFE AND WORK AS A CONSULTANT ORTHOPAEDIC AND TRAUMA SURGEON - BOTH HERE IN THE NORTH EAST AND IN THE WAR ZONES OF THE MIDDLE EAST…

In the aftermath of Desert Storm (the 1991 international military operation to expel Saddam Hussein from Kuwait) the defeated Iraqi dictator launched a series of brutally repressive measures against his own people. The subsequent bombing of Northern Iraq resulted in one million ethnic Kurds being forced to flee their homes and among these refugees was a 26 year old doctor named Deiary Kader. “The bombing made it impossible for us to stay and because the border with Iran was closed we had to resort to the mountains. We stayed three nights without shelter in the freezing cold weather and mud everywhere,” says Deiary and threats from Saddam’s air

force weren’t the only problems that he had to face on that terrible journey. “I found walking difficult because of a knee injury” he adds. In 1993 Deiary came to England and with the help of his family in London he requalified to be able to work here as a doctor. “I trained to be an orthopaedic surgeon and chose to specialise in knees because of that injury,” he says. Deiary was also determined to use his skills to help those he’d left behind but it was 17 years before he was able to return to his homeland.

WE USUALLY PERFORM THE MOST DIFFICULT PROCEDURES AT THE START OF THE WEEK SO WE CAN MONITOR THE PATIENT’S PROGRESS…

“It takes a long time to qualify as a surgeon in the UK but, by 2010, I was finally in a position to start a charity that would send medical teams to help people displaced by war,” he says. By this time Deiary was working in Gateshead and so, because most of the staff who initially volunteered came from Tyneside, he called his new charity Newcastle Gateshead Medical Volunteers (NGMV). “From the start everyone connected with NGMV gave their time for free, so that as much money as possible is spent on front line services instead of administration. As a result, we’re a very lean organisation that can send teams of up to 18 people to where they’re desperately needed for just £6,000 to £7,000,” he says. NGMV teams travel to Iraq two or three times a year and, whilst there, the personnel are based in one of two cities: Erbil, the regional capital, and Sulaimani which is Deiary’s hometown. The teams also work with local organisations: the Barazani Charity Foundation, the Nechirvan Health Aid Office and Shar hospital to ensure treatment reaches the most needy. Each mission lasts a week and during that time the teams perform up to 40 operations, often in extremely difficult conditions. “We take a full quota of surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, physiotherapists and theatre staff. We usually perform the most difficult procedures at the start of the week so we can monitor the patient’s progress. Yet, we don’t just operate and fly away; on one occasion we had to return to deal with a surgical complication that had occurred afterwards. We also train local doctors and nurses so they can continue treatment,” Deiary adds. Typical of the people helped by NGMV teams is a lady who had severe arthritis in both knees for years and was wheelchair bound till both knees were replaced. Had it not been for the charity,

“AT THE BEGINNING OF THE ISIS WAR WE DISTRIBUTED A TON OF BLANKETS TO THE XANKE REFUGEE CAMP IN DOHUK BUT THERE’S ALWAYS MORE WE CAN DO.

she’d now be destitute but the benefits produced by NGMV are not just felt abroad. As Deiary explains: “Though we go out to help underprivileged people, we gain a lot by working in an austere environment. In Iraq facilities are still limited so our teams have to be highly resourceful by avoiding waste and making the best use of what’s available. Skills that can be very useful for the NHS staff in the current economic downturn. We’ve also done many ‘pro bono’ operations for the NHS free of charge,” he says. Deiary’s activities have attracted plenty of attention. He’s been interviewed twice by ITV and has been praised in Parliament by Dave Anderson, MP for Blaydon. Moreover, in addition to his projects here and in Iraq, he works with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at their war trauma reconstruction centre in the Lebanon and even that’s not all. As Erbil is less than 30 miles from territory controlled by ISIS, the NGMV does what it can to help persons fleeing this latest conflict. “At the beginning of the ISIS war we distributed a ton of blankets to the Xanke refugee camp in Dohuk but there’s always more we can do. Even though our volunteers give their time and expertise for free, we still need money to fund our work and we’re very grateful for every donation, however small. We also have a shortage of anaesthetists and general theatre staff, so if anyone reading this can help please get in touch.” It hardly needs to be said that working in a war zone is one of the most challenging environments for any medical professional, and Deiary has experienced innumerable dangers in his extraordinary career, yet he remains utterly unfazed by such peril. “I recently had a freak cycle accident that nearly ruptured an artery in my neck. Fortunately the problem resolved before it caused serious damage but it did make me think that if such a minor mishap can prove fatal why should I ever worry about going to a battlefield?” You can find out more about NGMV, volunteer or make a donation via the charity’s website: www.ngmvcharity.co.uk. You can also follow their work and receive information about future fundraising events on Facebook www.facebook.com/NGMVcharity and Twitter @DeiaryKader.

BOLTON HALL

A GLORIOUS GEORGIAN COUNTRY HOUSE IN THE NORTH NORTHUMBERLAND HAMLET OF BOLTON CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET WITH SANDERSON YOUNG’S RARE! OFFICE…

NOT ONLY IS THIS HISTORIC HOME SURROUNDED BY BREATHTAKING SCENERY, ITS PERFECTLY PROPORTIONED, IVY-CLAD FAÇADE AND BEAUTIFULLY MAINTAINED GARDENS MAKE THIS EVERYONE’S IDEA OF WHAT A COUNTRY HOUSE SHOULD BE.

To my mind North Northumberland’s best kept secret is not its miles of empty, golden beaches or the acres of unspoilt countryside; it’s not even the tranquil villages, picturesque towns or romantic ruins that pepper this unique landscape. No, to my mind the glories of the area between Morpeth and Berwick are the elegant country houses tucked away in secluded valleys. Bolton Hall, located in the lovely Upper Aln Valley between Alnwick (approximately 5.5 miles) and the small village of Whittingham (2 miles), is just such a property. Not only is this historic home surrounded by breathtaking scenery, its perfectly proportioned, ivy-clad façade and beautifully maintained gardens make this everyone’s idea of what a country house should be. The first Bolton Hall, which was built in 1689, was greatly enlarged during the late 1700s and though the main house and its estate were divided into separate dwellings during the 1980s, the exceptional exterior has been preserved. Furthermore the South Wing, which occupies the principal part of the 17th and 18th Century buildings, has retained many period features including the neo-classical entrance portico, the sweeping carriage circle and the extensive gardens. The South Wing also boasts this magnificent home’s imposing grand staircase and many of the rooms still have their Regency mouldings, cornices, fireplaces and window shutters. Where essential modernisation has taken place, great care has been taken

to preserve the property’s architectural integrity so, for example, the large dining kitchen, which is situated in the older part of the house, has a modern double oven and hob in the Jacobean styled inglenook fireplace. In addition to the kitchen and ancillary rooms, such as a laundry, utility room and cloakroom/WC, there are three spacious reception rooms on the ground floor namely a stylish drawing room, a formal dining room and a cosy sitting room. Each room >>

<< has been decorated to the very highest standard, using the pastel shades favoured by Georgian tastes, and have large sash windows that allow natural light to flood in. Upstairs, the first floor has four double-bedroom suites, two family bathrooms and plenty of storage space. As is common in homes of this period, the principal and secondary bedrooms are separated by a ‘half landing’ and there is an additional attic floor containing the old servants’ quarters. These rooms are currently unused and offer considerable scope for conversion into additional bedrooms or a home office, gym or games room. Returning to the outside, the entire gardens and grounds extend to around 5.2 acres and include a paddock and a small copse of silver birch trees. The entrance to Bolton Hall is via a private road, which is lined with mature trees and still has its pillared gateway, whilst the open courtyard provides plenty of space for parking. There is also a range of versatile stone outbuildings, which date from the 1700s, that can be put to a variety of uses as they are large enough to provide additional accommodation if required and have great views over the paddock to the Cheviot Hills. As every keen gardener knows, the 18th Century was the golden age of gardening and Bolton Hall is full of horticultural history. In spring, daffodils and snowdrops carpet the woodland to the west of the house and in summer the rhododendrons and azaleas

are ablaze with colour. At the end of the year, there are dramatic displays of autumn leaves as well as outstanding views of snow-covered hilltops so every season here is an utter delight. However, don’t forget that important properties such as this seldom come on the open market so if your ideal home combines Georgian elegance with gorgeous gardens and an idyllic rural location contact Sanderson Young without delay.

EMBRACE THE LATEST

SWIMWEAR

LOOKS THIS SEASON, TAPPING INTO TOPICAL TRENDS SUCH AS ATHLETIC LEISURE, FRESH FLORAL BOTANICALS AND ASYMMETRIC SHAPES, REPORTS HELEN WILSON-BEEVERS. Whether you’re booking a luxurious sunshine break or staying closer to home, select a stunning one or two-piece from our favourite resort wear brands. A number of different designs are making a splash across swimwear for SS17, meaning there is certainly something for everyone, whatever your seasonal preference. At different ends of the style spectrum, modern active wear is seeing a surge in popularity, alongside classic and timeless French Riviera-inspired styles, not to mention, statement silhouettes. As outlined by designer swimwear guru Melissa Odabash: “The Athleisure trend has really pushed the one piece forward, you

see a lot more people choosing one pieces over bikinis. The Ibiza swimsuit is one of my go to choices.” The Ibiza swimsuit mentioned by Melissa is a gorgeous gold one piece priced at £210. This truly breathtaking fashion item spans across a number of spring and summer’s sartorial styles, including asymmetrical, said ‘athleisure’ and finally, emphasising that metallic notes never fade. Pair with a Melissa Odabash June Pearl Knit (£350) for an elegant beach to bar outfit. If you’re feeling a little more daring, you may wish to snap up the Ibiza swimsuit in Fluoro (£200). Adding a pop to proceedings, stand out from the crowd and welcome your party wear summer poolside wardrobe. Seafolly recently launched their Active Collection, combining pieces to be worn from gym to swim. Sporty yet playful, you can partake in both beach and sports activities, grabbing a postworkout ocean splash. Other key Seafolly SS17 ranges are the Castaway Stripe, Island Vibe, Spice Temple and Vintage Wildflower lines. While bikinis will always remain en vogue, one piece swimsuits are having a definite moment. Ted Baker’s Starza swimming costume Collection

(£75) is top of our list, complete with timeless plunge neckline. The red tone hints towards another trend, French Riviera styles. The Panache Paloma swimsuit (£52) is an understated garment, reminiscent of the Grace Kelly era. Throw in an oversized hat, slick of red lipstick and vintage sunglasses, for all important extra style points. Re-imagined florals are also the order of the day, with the Panache Florentine swimsuit (£56) highlighting an haute couture holiday feel, whilst staying true to ever popular summer flower fabrics. If you prefer a game of two halves, tankini or bikini designs are your best bet, such as the chic polka dot Anya tankini by Panache, priced at £44 for the top and £19 for its separate pant. Seafolly’s top (£42) and bottom (£38) offerings cover their bright Havana bikini. A cold-shoulder cut, the beautiful sea-blue colour and edge detail instantly conjure up images of summer and glorious sunshine. Similarly, the high-waist Seafolly Vintage Wildflower number

(also priced at £42 and £38), enables you to adopt an ageless shape, and retain the bikini mantra. The exotic Spice Temple selection from Seafolly will instantly transport you to sunnier climes. Intricate patterns insert a touch of intrigue and create a more unusual swimwear alternative. Seafolly’s Island Vibe Maillot collection cleverly refreshes floral fusion, enabling this print to be bigger and better than ever. Offset against a black background, bold floral shades are brought to life for the ultimate holiday escape. Flirt with tassels or statement colour on your cover-up, introducing extra detail. The Panache navy blue Sun Dress (£35) comes complete with Missoni-effect zig zag fine knit, adding a hint of see through seduction while also protecting your modesty. Worn over the bright red Panache Britt Stripe bikini, which is £34 for the top and £23 for the high waist pant, this takes us full circle and back to the tempting French coast. To summarise, combine your favourite swimwear themes with emerging trends, choosing strong silhouettes, active swim and sportswear, chic classic shapes and bold colours. Select accessories to co-ordinate or clash, and indulge your summer self with deluxe fabrics. Optimise trends by merging more than one theme together and most of all; have fun in the sun this summer.

NATURAL INDIA With no less than 80 National Parks, India is a wonderland for lovers of wildlife but the oldest, and most famous, game reserve is located 150 miles north of New Delhi in the Himalayan district of Kumaon. The Jim Corbett National Park is named after an apostate tiger-hunter-turned-naturalist whose book, Man-Eaters of Kumaon, helped popularise tiger conservation. Since its creation in 1936, the park has been extended several times and now covers 250 square miles of incredibly varied habitat ranging from dusty savannah to primeval forest. Besides 200 tigers and 300 elephants, the park is home to numerous sloth bears (Baloo in The Jungle Book), langur monkeys, rhesus macaques, wild peacocks, otters, gharial crocodiles and several species of deer. The best time to explore India’s national parks is from November to March and if you can’t make it to the Jim Corbett try:

…THE OLDEST, AND MOST FAMOUS, GAME RESERVE IS LOCATED 150 MILES NORTH OF NEW DELHI IN THE HIMALAYAN DISTRICT OF KUMAON.

• Northern India: Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan - besides the wildlife don’t miss the historic complex of forts, temples, mosques and hunting pavilions in the centre of the park. • Central India: Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh boasts the largest concentration of tigers and leopards in the country. • Southern India: Bandipur National Park, Karnataka - the former private hunting ground of Mysore’s fabulously wealthy maharajahs now protects more than 100 rare species. • Eastern India: Kaziranga National Park, Assam – the best place to spot India’s critically endangered one-horned rhinoceros.

INDIA BY RAIL Whatever your views on Britain’s colonial past, the one undeniable benefit of the Raj is India’s extensive rail network. At one end of the scale, India’s commuter trains provide a vital lifeline for tens of millions of ordinary people and at the other there’s the Palace on Wheels. Launched in 1982, this five-star tourist service recalls the days when rajahs and nawabs travelled between their sumptuous palaces in their own private trains and, though the coaches used nowadays are replicas of those used by Rajasthan’s royal family, they still offer the last word in luxury rail travel. The best time to go is from September to April and there are four different services from which to choose: • Maharajah’s Express Delhi to Mumbai (Bombay) – has a range of itineraries covering the most famous sights in northern and central India including Agra (Taj Mahal), Ranthambore National Park (see above) and Jaipur (Pink City). >> Collection

INDIA BY RAIL (CONT.) • The Deccan Odyssey Delhi to Mumbai or Mumbai to Goa – has a range of itineraries covering northern and western India including Agra and the Buddhist shrines in the Ajanta Caves. • Golden Chariot Bangalore to Goa – has a range of itineraries covering the spectacular sights of Southern India including Mysore, Chennai (Madras) and Pondicherry. • Royal Rajasthan Delhi to Delhi Round Trip – has a of range itineraries that includes both the famous (Taj Mahal etc.) and less well known sites of India’s ‘Golden Triangle’ such as Chittorgarh (capital of the Rajputs), Khajuraho Temples (erotic sculptures) and Varanasi (spiritual capital of India and an important centre for Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism).

RURAL INDIA Spending a working holiday on a farm is becoming increasingly popular in India as it offers an excellent way for tourists to support local economies. That said, it should be stressed that India’s agri-tourist industry is in its infancy, so don’t expect air-conditioning and a fully stocked mini-bar in your room. On the other hand, if you want to discover the real India, well away from tourist traps, this could be for you, especially as agri-tourism is not just for Westerners. This new type of sustainable holiday is also attracting a growing number of urban Indians seeking to rediscover their rural roots but, whether you hail from New Delhi or Newcastle, the highlights of any Indian farm holiday will include: • Working in the fields – from spring planting to harvest, you’ll experience a pace of life far removed from the mayhem of the modern metropolis. • Eating & Drinking – meals are usually taken with a local family

where the women still cook in clay ovens called chula and milk comes fresh from the cow. • Arts & Crafts – many villages still produce handicrafts that are unique to their communities with the secrets of their manufacture being passed down from generation to generation. • Fairs & Festivals – visitors are usually welcome to watch the traditional dance and music that accompanies harvest festivals and other seasonal holidays but be warned. Indian villages, like rural communities all over the world, tend to be highly conservative so tourists are strongly advised to avoid such things as taking photographs without permission.

SPENDING A WORKING HOLIDAY ON A FARM IS BECOMING INCREASINGLY POPULAR IN INDIA…

MARITIME MYTHS

CROSS & CRESCENT

Long before the Venetians christened the island Corfu (Land of Peaks), the Greeks called it Corcyra (Κέρκυρα) after a water-nymph loved by the sea god Poseidon. According to Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, Corcyra was the last place Odysseus visited during his ten years of wandering and Homer also remarks that the islanders were such good sailors they could steer their ships by thought alone! Though most of the island’s Homeric treasures have been lost, the modern Achillieon (Αχίλλειον) palace boasts scores of 19th Century artworks depicting scenes from the Trojan War. Alternatively, to follow in the footsteps of Odysseus and the ancient Corcyrans, why not explore the island by sea? You don’t need telekinetic powers and even beginners can join a fully escorted ‘flotilla’ sailing holiday.

Corfu’s location, at the mouth of the Adriatic Sea, means it controls vital shipping routes between Greece and Italy. In ancient times Corinthians, Athenians, Spartans, Romans and even barbarian Goths fought for control of this strategic island and the struggle continued throughout the Middle Ages. Eventually, the Venetians triumphed over their Byzantine, Norman, Genoese and Turkish rivals and their mighty castles became a bulwark against the expansion of the Ottoman Empire. The Venetian Old Fortress (Παλαιό Φρούριο) withstood the heroic sieges of 1531, 1571 and 1716 but today this superb example of Renaissance military architecture is used for concerts and theatrical performances. Movie buffs may recognise this castle from the Bond film For Your Eyes Only and you can find echoes of more peaceful Venetian influences in the surrounding Old Town.

NAPOLEON & NELSON

www.sandersonyoung.co.uk/holiday-introductions

During the Napoleonic Wars, Venice and its colonies, including Corfu, came under French control and this prompted the British to invade. In 1809, having conquered the other Ionian Islands (Ithaca, Zakynthos, Cephalonia, Paxi , Lefkada and Kythera) the Royal Navy captured most of Corfu but the capital’s heavily fortified citadel held out until 1814. In 1815, the Congress of Vienna, which ended the Napoleonic Wars, created the United States of the Ionian Islands and placed this supposedly independent archipelago under British protection. The most visible monument to the Napoleonic era is the New Fort (Νέο Φρούριο) in Corfu City. Though the foundations are Venetian, its ramparts were greatly extended by the French and British.

CRICKET & COMMANDOS in 1864, Britain ceded all its Balkan possessions to the newly unified Greek nation and thereafter Corfu became a popular holiday destination for the crowned heads of Europe, especially the German and Austrian emperors. During the 1920s, the Italian dictator Mussolini tried to add the island to his fascist empire but though Il Duce succeeded in conquering the island during WW2 his victory was fleeting. In 1943, just two years after conquering Corfu, Mussolini fell from power and the island was finally liberated by British Royal Marine Commandos in 1944. Despite being in control of Corfu for less than 50 years, the British left a deep impression on the island. The British High Commissioner resided in a sprawling collection of mansions known as the Old Palaces (Παλαιά Ανάκτορα) which are open to the public whilst the so-called Lower Square (Κάτω Πλατεία) still hosts regular cricket matches!

THE DURRELLS & THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH Today Corfu is best known as a holiday destination but this jewel of the Ionian Islands has been home to some very famous Britons. Naturalist Gerald Durrell, and his novelist older brother Lawrence, lived here with their mother from 1935-1939 whilst Prince Philip was born in a villa built by the British but later owned by the Greek royal family. The three houses where the Durrells lived, immortalised in Gerald’s much filmed autobiography My Family & Other Animals, are private homes closed to the public but Prince Phillip’s birthplace, Mon Repos, is now an archaeological museum. You can also create your own Ionian idyll by renting one of the hundreds of luxury villas scattered throughout the island.

INHERITANCE TAX AND THE FAMILY HOME:

A CHANGE TO THE RULES ABOUT INHERITANCE TAX IS DUE TO COME IN TO FORCE ON 6 APRIL THIS YEAR WHICH COULD EVENTUALLY ALLOW MARRIED COUPLES AND CIVIL PARTNERS TO LEAVE £1 MILLION OF ASSETS TO THEIR CHILDREN, TAX FREE ON DEATH.

THE CURRENT RULES Under current rules, when someone dies the first £325,000 of their estate is free of Inheritance Tax (“IHT”), known as the Nil Rate Band (“NRB”). However, if a husband and wife leave everything to each other in their Wills, then on first death all assets passing to the surviving spouse are exempt from IHT. This means that none of the NRB is used on first death, and can be transferred to the estate of the surviving spouse on their death. The estate on second death will therefore have a combined NRB of £650,000. Assets over this amount are then subject to IHT at 40%.

unused NRB of £325,000, giving a total of £650,000. All of the other assets of the estate worth £650,000 will also pass to the children free of IHT.

THE NEW RULES

A WORD OF WARNING

As of 6 April 2017, an additional NRB will be available to individuals, which can be offset against the value of their main residence if this passes to their ‘lineal descendants’, which includes children, grandchildren, step-children, foster children and adopted children.

The rules around the RNRB are not straightforward and, because of this, Wills which have previously been prepared may now need to be reviewed.

This will be known as the ‘Residence Nil Rate Band’ (“RNRB”) and will initially be £100,000. This will increase by £25,000 every financial year until 2020/21 when it will be £175,000. Like the NRB, the RNRB will also be transferrable between spouses. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, PLEASE CONTACT

So, by way of example, Mr and Mrs Page have a house worth £350,000 and savings of £650,000. Mr Page dies in 2021, and leaves everything to Mrs Page. At this time everything passes free of IHT and Mr Page’s NRB and RNRB have not been used. Mrs Page then dies and leaves everything to their children equally. At that time, the estate of Mrs Page will be able to claim her RNRB of £175,000 and Mr Page’s unused RNRB of £175,000 giving a total of £350,000. This means that the house will pass to the children free of IHT. The estate will also have Mrs Page’s NRB of £325,000 and Mr Page’s

Due to the change in rules, Mrs Page’s estate would have saved £140,000 of IHT. By 2020/21 married couples and Civil Partners with children may therefore benefit from the long awaited £1 million Inheritance Tax allowance.

For example, a child may predecease their parents. Whilst current Wills may anticipate this and include a substitute gift to grandchildren, depending on the wording within the Wills, the substitute gift may not qualify for the RNRB. Current Wills may also need to be reviewed if they include Trusts, as the property may not pass to ‘lineal descendants.’ Difficulties can also arise if a decision is made to downsize, if more than one property is owned or if unmarried couples have children from previous relationships. Whilst the rules provide for some of these things, given the potential IHT savings available with the introduction of the RNRB, it is important for people to review their Wills and seek advice to ensure the new relief will be captured. At Hay & Kilner our Private Client team have extensive experience in preparing Wills and IHT planning, and are happy to provide advice and assistance in these matters.

“WE’RE THRILLED TO BE LINKING UP WITH A BUSINESS LIKE SANDERSON YOUNG, WHICH HAS A LONG ESTABLISHED PRESENCE IN PONTELAND…

The luxuriant greens and fairways of Ponteland’s beautiful parkland course, which many regard as being among the finest in the region, have been a feature of the village ever since 1927 but the challenge is to ensure that this historic club will survive for another nine decades. In order to achieve this noble ambition, Ponteland Golf Club is trying to attract more young people and ladies to the sport and naturally Sanderson Young are keen to help. As part of a brand new partnership with the North East’s leading estate agents and property consultants, Sanderson Young will be sponsoring one of the course’s 18 holes as well as supporting Ponteland’s three league teams. Two of the sponsored sides are adult teams, which play in the senior Newcastle & District League and Hadrian League respectively, whilst the third is a junior team that plays in the Northumberland League. Apart from providing all the teams with new Galvin Green uniforms, commercial support like this will allow Ponteland to develop its innovative Juniors Club which is designed to make golf more appealing to children and teenagers. “We’ve found that many kids lose interest in the game if their friends don’t share their enthusiasm for golf. Therefore our Juniors Club arranges regular trips to other activities, such as go-karting, so we can make Ponteland more attractive to more children,” explains General Manager Nigel Mills. Membership of the Juniors Club, which welcomes all children up to the age of 14, costs just £80 per year and includes five free lessons with the club’s professionals, a club shirt and weekly practice sessions as well as the aforementioned social activities. As a way of driving interest in golf, the Juniors Club is sure to be

a success and Sanderson Young have been able to provide additional help by showing how social media can be used to connect with the next generation of golfers. “We’re thrilled to be linking up with a business like Sanderson Young, which has a long established presence in Ponteland, and we’ve learned a great deal about things like Facebook and Twitter!” Nigel adds but the Juniors Club is not the only way local businesses can offer their support. The club’s committee is keen to bring more people, both golfers and non-golfers, to Ponteland’s gorgeous art deco clubhouse and business sponsorship is an important part of this strategy. “We welcome visiting players and we’ve always considered being involved with the wider community to be a vital part of our club’s role. Local groups already use our clubhouse facilities for their regular meetings and special functions, and we’re also becoming an increasingly popular venue for birthdays and weddings, but we want to make more people aware that we have an excellent meeting space, bar and 80 seater function room available. Commercial sponsorship is a superb way to do this and we have several packages suitable for all types of company,” says Nigel. The entry level sponsorship plan offers such things as tee signage featuring the sponsor’s name and logo, endorsements on the club’s website and complimentary four ball vouchers. For a higher profile, companies can invest in one of the more expensive Silver, Gold or Platinum packages and the additional benefits offered by these higher levels of sponsorship range from one pre-booked four ball per week to a full 80 person golf day for staff and/or clients. With prices starting at £600 (+VAT) sponsoring Ponteland Golf Club can be very cost-effective for even the smallest marketing budget and if you would like to know more please contact Nigel on 01661 822 689 or email: generalmanager@thepontelandgolfclub.co.uk

KEY SUPPORT, SUCCESS & INFLUENCE WITHIN THE RESIDENTIAL NEW HOMES SECTOR

WE OFFER FULL CONSULTANCY, MARKETING AND MEDIA SERVICES TO OUR SMALLER BUILDERS, AND SUPPORT WORK TO OUR LARGER BUILDERS.

116

Collection

Sanderson Young have been very well known for nearly 18 years in the region, for being at the forefront of residential new homes developments and being extremely influential with the success of many new homes schemes created, not just in Newcastle’s city centre and its riverside, but in the suburbs of Newcastle. Over the last 2 years, we have seen fabulous success outside of Newcastle. In Alnwick, the team assisted Cussins Homes in the highly successful development at The Limes and more recently, Lindisfarne Homes at Beadnell Point which is now completely sold out of its 40 beautiful New England-style homes. We offer full consultancy, marketing and media services to our smaller builders, and support work to our larger builders. More recently, David Wilson Homes at La Sagesse in Jesmond, benefitted from our strong sales connections to create success of their outstanding development in Jesmond. Mill Rise, set in the park at Ponteland, is also sold out this year with 18 stunning apartments. Our energy efficient, state-of-the-art homes at Hexham Gate by Trivselhus, on the Corbridge Road, leading out of Hexham, only have a few last remaining luxury houses to sell. However, the team at Sanderson Young has continued to grow, having been originally founded with tremendous background expertise from its Managing Director, Duncan Young and his colleagues Janet Hopkinson, the Operations Director and Nicola Osborne, the Corporate Director and Professional Surveyor. Nicola Osborne had an extensive wealth of knowledge working on new homes projects through Knight Frank and Grainger Homes.

Janet Hopkinson worked with Duncan in his Dudley Charlton days and formed a very prestigious land and new homes department which achieved success throughout the country. Duncan prides himself on his background within new homes and has advised and guided many residential schemes throughout the North East of England to achieve significant success. In the last 6 months, the professional services team has expanded its expertise further with the introduction of Amy Brice, a newly qualified Chartered Surveyor who has worked in the company for 7 years. Amy has fabulous estate agency knowledge and is now able to offer an extensive background into residential property sales and surveying.

IT IS, HOWEVER, NOT JUST NEW HOMES WHICH HIGHLIGHTS THE PROFESSIONAL DEPARTMENT OF SANDERSON YOUNG, BUT ALSO THE SKILLS THAT THEY CAN CREATE WITH REGARD TO A NUMBER OF OTHER PROFESSIONAL FIELDS.

Reflecting on his career in estate agency and new homes, Duncan Young, the Managing Director, commented ‘The company’s expertise within the residential market is second to none. My colleagues and I, working with good estate agents who have extensive years of knowledge and expertise in sales and marketing, can achieve some of the very best prices possible. Many of our new homes clients and colleagues offer a diverse range of products throughout the region. I was extremely proud of our time helping Crown Dilmun develop the old Swan House roundabout into beautiful apartments which continue to be popular, as well as many schemes on the Quayside with fabulous views over the river. The development of Lime Square in The Ouseburn and the iconic Turnbull Building were also memorable residential schemes. The conversion of the former Proctor and Gamble offices in Gosforth into luxury apartments and townhouses, as well as fabulous large semi-detached houses, continues to be an extremely popular site and the recent sales we have achieved in Northumberland, from Hexham to Alnwick and on the coast at Beadnell, give me a great deal of pride that our team are working so well with our developer partners.’ It is, however, not just new homes which highlights the professional department of Sanderson Young, but also the skills that they can create with regard to a number of other professional fields. Sanderson Young’s development consultancy includes full land appraisals, comparable market analysis, land sale and acquisitions, as well as regeneration, mixed-use and master planning working with specialist consultant planners throughout the region. Recently, the team have been working with Urban Splash and Places for People on the exciting regeneration of the former Smith’s Dock in North Shields. In May of this year, the long awaited first phase is to be launched, offering 34 magnificent townhouses with the contemporary Urban Splash signature hoUSe design being brought from Manchester, where it has been extremely popular, into the North East for the first time. Details of this site will be coming soon and waiting lists are being formed at www. smithsdock.co.uk or telephone Rosemary Miller on 0191 580 7999. Nicola Osborne reflects on her career in the company, ‘One of the first introductions we had in Sanderson Young was to work for the NHS Northumberland Tyne and Wear Trust, where we assisted the marketing and sale of surplus land at Northgate Hospital in Morpeth, Fleming Hospital in Jesmond and Prudhoe. All of these sites proved to be extremely popular and the land was sold on. All sites have now commenced work and are proving very popular places to live. They offer diverse forms of living, from private residential homes to sheltered housing, and it is very rewarding to see how we have affected such beautiful developments within the region. We continue to advise on a number of other mixed-use schemes, including aparthotels, conversions of former offices into residential and mixed residential and commercial schemes, including Lime Square and the Echo Building in Sunderland, which is an iconic building towering over the River Wear. Our professional valuation work includes matrimonial and probate valuations for solicitors, as well as development funding and loan

security, inheritance tax, expert witness and asset valuations. The company are also extremely proud of their regional and national reach, working with international buyers throughout the world who are brought in as investors into many locations. Most prominently, the Chinese market now is a particularly strong sector, but historically the Irish invested well into Sunderland. We have great guest relationships offering additional consultancy with planning specialists, building surveyors and specialist service providers.’ Duncan concluded ‘Whilst our stretch of professional consultancy remains local and very friendly with our strong partnerships, we are delighted that our impact and advice has been able to create such fabulous residential living throughout the North of England. If we can help you in any shape or form in respect of professional consultancy in the above areas, please do not hesitate to contact myself and my team, either by email Duncan.young@sandersonyoung.co.uk or at our rare! office on 0191 223 3500. We look forward to bringing success to you and maximising the asset value of your developments.’

NEIL GORDON MEETS NICK DAWE, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF

LINDISFARNE HOMES

TO LEARN THE SECRET OF HIS HUGELY SUCCESSFUL BEADNELL POINT DEVELOPMENT AS WELL AS NEWS OF AN EXCITING NEW PROJECT AT LESBURY… It can’t have escaped many peoples’ notice that there’s a lot of residential construction going on at the moment. Everywhere, housing developers are rushing to meet the explosion in demand for new homes but amidst the standard suburban estates springing up across the UK there is, happily, still room for small inventive companies that take the time to create new homes that enhance their surroundings. Such a company is Lindisfarne Homes and their sell-out Beadnell Point development on the North Northumberland coast is an excellent example of their philosophy.

LINDISFARNE HOMES MAY BE A RELATIVE NEWCOMER TO THE LIST OF NORTH EAST DEVELOPERS, BUT MANAGING DIRECTOR NICK DAWE IS WELL VERSED IN THE NEEDS OF THE MODERN RESIDENTIAL MARKET.

118

Collection

Lindisfarne Homes may be a relative newcomer to the list of North East developers, but managing director Nick Dawe is well versed in the needs of the modern residential market. Having spent most of his career working for a large house building company in the Midlands, Nick decided to set up on his own three years ago and he returned to his native North East to put his ideas into practice. The hub of Nick’s development-thinking is that much overworked word ‘local’ but far from paying mere lip service to the idea that a building should be in harmony with its surroundings, he works hard to ensure that every development by Lindisfarne Homes brings lasting benefits to its neighbouring community. To this end, he employs local architects and builders to work on his projects wherever possible, and insists they use the latest construction techniques and building materials to minimise each home’s impact on the natural environment - but don’t take my word for it. To see exactly what I mean, take a look at Beadnell Point where Sanderson Young were the sole selling agents.

SANDERSON YOUNG HAS A LONG HISTORY OF WORKING WITH HIGHLY INNOVATIVE HOUSEBUILDERS LIKE LINDISFARNE HOMES AND THE NORTH EAST’S BEST KNOWN FIRM OF PROPERTY CONSULTANTS HAS BEEN PARTICULARLY PROUD TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE SUCCESS OF BEADNELL POINT.

Sanderson Young has a long history of working with highly innovative housebuilders like Lindisfarne Homes and the North East’s best known firm of property consultants has been particularly proud to be associated with the success of Beadnell Point. Being located in the heart of Northumberland’s beautiful Heritage Coast meant that the architects and builders had to work closely with Lindisfarne Homes to produce a range of property types that were both sympathetic to their setting yet architecturally outstanding. Fortunately, because each company involved was based in the North East, they each had a unique appreciation of both the site’s special requirements and the expectations of potential buyers. The result has been an exceptional choice of highly attractive, versatile homes set in imaginatively landscaped surroundings. The overall vision for the site was to mirror the open spaces of the nearby dunes and beach. To this end, there are no dividing fences or hedges separating the individual properties; instead, the broad, grassy spaces between the homes have been planted with a large number of trees that will provide both privacy and a range of habitats for wildlife. Similarly, the development’s lake with its own gravel island is not just ornamental, it will provide vital nesting sites for water-birds. Last but not least, all the houses boast PV solar panels to help reduce energy use but these laudable green credentials do not mean that the needs of Beadnell Point’s human inhabitants have been forgotten. As all the properties here are intended to be used as holiday homes, the Newcastle based architects JDDK have used classic

seaside motifs as the starting point for their designs. Therefore, such things as the painted weatherboards cladding each home are reminiscent of the picturesque wood-framed houses of New England but behind these gorgeous, traditional exteriors is a range of design innovations. From outdoor stores large enough to accommodate all types of water sports’ equipment to glass walls and balconies that make the most of the breath-taking views, this attention to detail helped propel Beadnell Point to the top of most people’s property wish lists and though all the homes here are now sold I have some very good news. If you’ve always dreamed of living in the country, but still have to work in the town, you will be delighted to hear that Lindisfarne Homes and JDDK architects, the same team behind Beadnell Point, are planning to bring their interpretation of all that’s best in traditional and contemporary housebuilding to a new location in Lesbury. With its pub, post office and seaside setting, Lesbury is the perfect example of an idyllic Northumbrian village. Yet, despite this tranquil, rural location, easy access to the mainline station at nearby Alnmouth, means Lesbury is ideally situated for anyone who needs to commute to Newcastle. In keeping with the Lindisfarne Homes’ way of thinking, this will be a small and exclusive development consisting of just ten premium quality 4/5 bedroom, detached homes and there’s more good news in the fact that Sanderson Young are likely to be the selling agents! At the time of writing, details of these new homes are a closely guarded secret but we hope to bring you more information in the next edition of Collection. In the meantime, to sign up for email alerts and other advance news of this exciting development, contact Sanderson Young’s Alnwick office on: 01665 600170 or go to the website www.sandersonyoung.co.uk. Managing Director Jennifer Bernard talks to Helen Wilson-Beevers about her work and inspiration, letting us in on key design insight and upcoming interior themes. Read on to learn more about sprucing up your home for a sale and the process involved when carrying out an interiors project.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN ETHOS? Our design ethos is very personal, and is translated through listening to clients and tuning in to what they want. I create an overall vision and talk this through with my team so they know exactly what’s in my head. We then present to the client. We work back to source whatever products and finishes we need to create that vision. Projects vary widely so we could be working on a brand new property in Spain or a home with a lot of history, for example we’re currently working on a 21 room listed residential project in Scotland.

THE CONCEPT DESIGN IS IN RESPONSE TO THE CLIENT’S BRIEF AND IS PRESENTED AS DRAFT LAYOUTS ILLUSTRATING USE OF SPACE…

FROM WHERE DO YOU GATHER MOST OF YOUR CREATIVE INSPIRATION? Travel is a great inspiration, visiting exclusive hotels around the world. Also the professional interior design and furniture shows such as Maison et Objets in Paris and Decorex International in London.

WHAT STAGES ARE INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS OF COMPLETING AN INTERIORS PROJECT? For commercial projects we may start with marketing strategy and stakeholder consultation before we go to concept design stage. The concept design is in response to the client’s brief and is presented as draft layouts illustrating use of space, any structural modifications and furniture layouts. We also produce mood boards and CGI’s to demonstrate colour schemes, furniture styles and finishes and the overall vision. A draft cost plan includes provisional sums for any works along with an outline programme. When this is agreed with the client the project moves to the detail design and specification stage. Every element of the scheme is designed and specified for the client to sign off, before a comprehensive cost plan is >> Collection

Once work starts, on-site progress is continually managed and monitored, ensuring any issues arising are quickly and efficiently resolved. When all construction and fixed items are complete, soft furnishings and window treatments are installed. The delivery and positioning of all furniture and furnishings is then coordinated. We often curate artwork, accessories and floral arrangements to perfect the finished look.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE WHAT I DO AND THAT ENERGY IS INFECTIOUS. I’VE ALWAYS JUST BEEN MYSELF WITH CLIENTS, WHICH HELPS TO PUT THEM AT EASE.

CAN YOU GIVE US SOME ADVICE ON PREPARING A HOME READY FOR SALE?

MAXIMISING SPACE

is essential, so first de-clutter. You’re aiming to appeal to a broad market so make things neutral, crisp and clean. Freshen up with new cushions and a statement floral arrangement.

HOW DO YOU ENGAGE AND BUILD RAPPORT WITH YOUR CLIENTS? I absolutely love what I do and that energy is infectious. I’ve always just been myself with clients, which helps to put them at ease. Our service is personal and also very professional, which builds trust as clients know we will deliver exactly what we promise with attention to detail and to the most exacting standards.

WHICH DESIGN TRENDS OF PAST AND PRESENT ARE YOUR ABSOLUTE FAVOURITES? My taste is classic and eclectic so I don’t follow trends. I aim for a timeless look which can be a mix of antique and contemporary, including items which have personal importance and significance for clients.

ARE THERE ANY SPECIFIC INTERIOR THEMES YOU SEE EMERGING IN SS17? A colour that has impact is teal, there are shades coming through everywhere. My favourite is Zoffany Prussian.

IT IS THE DAWNING OF A NEW ERA, NOT JUST FOR BRITAIN BUT FOR THE WORLD, THANKS TO THE UNCHARTERED WATERS OF BREXIT AND AN UNORTHODOX NEW AMERICAN PRESIDENT. 126

Interesting times for British businesses, including Rolls-Royce, that could never have guessed what lay around the corner when it embarked upon an ambitious policy of expansion. A drive to achieve one new car every year is quite outrageous by the standards of such a traditionally cautious company, but it may turn out to be fortuitous nonetheless, possibly even an omen. The name of the latest model heralds the dawning of a new era for the company, with a break from tradition and some would say, a brave journey into the unknown. The name itself may not be new, and neither is the concept of a convertible Roller, but only 28 of the original Silver Dawn dropheads were ever made, between 1950 and 1954, being the first Rolls-Royce to sport a factory-made body. Now, however, the company is enjoying its second highest sales in its 113-year existence, with the new Dawn attracting the strongest pre-order book for any new Rolls-Royce. This is veering dangerously close to mass production by Rolls-

Royce standards, with eager punters queuing up to hand over in excess of £300,000 for each vehicle. The hefty cost is partly because virtually every model is built to each buyer’s individual specific requirements, with an apparently endless list of adornments that conspire to make no two cars the same. Even the Chancellor is laughing all the way to the bank, with a whopping £44,000 in tax on the basic price of a single car, plus the taxes paid on the salaries of the company’s 1,700 UK staff, and growing. What additional taxes the American President may impose on such an upmarket import, if any, remain to be seen. Undaunted, in the last 12 months Rolls-Royce has doubled the size of its British research, development and manufacturing facilities, and added half a dozen new dealers to its network. However, this is not just a British or even European operation, despite its UK base and German ownership, with the US being among its biggest markets and a recent order for 30 cars worth about £8 million for a single buyer in Macau. Now Rolls-Royce is gearing up for even further growth, with the Wraith, Ghost and Dawn models due to be joined by the new Phantom next year. The remarkable reincarnation of this once-ailing car company is testament to the fact that one certainty in this so-called uncertain world is that the rich are getting richer, and there are more of them every year. It also illustrates the undeniable truth that those who can afford the best aspire to it being not just better than the rest, but >> Collection

<< so good that it elevates them to celebrity status by becoming unattainable for all but the select few. This is the rarefied atmosphere of the sort of exclusivity for which punters are prepared to pay the heftiest of premiums, safe in the knowledge that they are investing in perfection, or at least as close to it as the world’s most accomplished automotive craftsmen can achieve. It is this obsessive attention to detail that sets cars such as the classically elegant Dawn drophead apart from other pretenders that also target the ultimate accolade in a growing market in which high-powered convertibles are not uncommon. This Roller achieves an unrivalled presence, with everything about it being on a grand scale, from its gargantuan size at virtually seventeen and a half feet long, to its enormous weight of two and a half tonnes, driven by a 12-clyninder engine of 6.6-litres. Despite its impressive bulk, this monster of a motor can generate pulling power of 780Nm to launch itself from rest to 60mph in just 4.9 seconds, and if the top speed were not electronically limited to just 155mph, it would be in excess of 200mph. Now that is what you call wind in the hair motoring, but only with

the six-layer folding roof down, otherwise the atmosphere inside is of the gently wafting climatically controlled and purified variety. As with all automobiles charged with the honour of carrying the famous flying lady upon its bonnet, the Dawn convertible continues the tradition of cosseting its occupants by means of an enviable suite of luxuries. Where it differs from the other thoroughbreds in its own stable, is to lower the age profile in a bid to achieve mission impossible by appealing to thirtysomethings and their parents in equal measure. For whilst there are bespoke umbrellas nestling within the bodywork that can be drawn like a sword from a scabbard, there is also a megabase sound system capable of scaring the birds from the trees at a distance of two miles. There is a very agreeable way of opening the doors at the touch of a button rather than being forced to condescend to the vulgarity of a stretched arm, and the onboard infotainment and communications system is straight out of a sci-fi movie. The quality of the computerised ride and handling is of the magic carpet variety yet this modern-day leviathan can snake along mountain passes with the sure-footed composure of an Italian thoroughbred. Ultimately no other four-seater convertible achieves the same level of near-perfection as the Rolls Royce Dawn, which reinforces the famous words of the company’s founder that “the quality will remain long after the price is forgotten.’’

St Oswald’s Hospice are a crucial resource for many North East families, providing vital support to over 2,000 adults, children and young people with incurable conditions each year. St Oswald’s recently marked their 30th birthday, an event heralding special celebrations which will continue throughout much of 2017. As part of this, a commemorative mosaic was unveiled by patients last summer, designed and created by patients, volunteers and staff. Perfectly positioned in the building’s main reception, the beautiful artwork offers a creative insight into the hospice’s incredible work and community spirit. The hospice has grown considerably since first opening with an inpatient unit. St Oswald’s now comprises of Adult Services including an inpatient unit, day services, family support, a lymphoedema clinic and outpatient services. They also have a Children and Young Adults Service which provides short breaks for young people with life shortening conditions. Lee Clark, aged 22 from Hebburn, began using St Oswald’s aged 10 in 2004, just a year after the Children’s Service opened. Lee has used the Children and Young Adults Service at St Oswald’s for 12 years. His mum, Donna, explains why coming for short breaks at the Hospice is so important to them:

“Lee gets a lot out of coming to the hospice – he gets all his therapies, including physiotherapy, and he loves the Jacuzzi baths! He just loves being around people, and coming to the Hospice means he is around his peers. He can’t take part in activities but he still gets enjoyment from interacting. When we are coming to St Oswald’s, he now understands where we are going and has a big smile on his face. “And for me, when Lee comes to the hospice, I get a chance to recharge my batteries and can relax knowing he’s comfortable and in good hands.” St Oswald’s embraces positivity and the hospice remains a strong and dependable foundation. With their incredible work, they provide a vital unwavering lifeline within our region.

Exciting holiday destination website Charity Escapes was launched by husband and wife team, Jeremy and Catherine Middleton, reports Helen Wilson-Beevers. A self-made businessman and CBE, Jeremy decided to transfer these industry skills into an innovative charity venture, as part of The Middleton Foundation. Initially, Jeremy and Catherine came up with the idea of using their holiday home to raise money for charity, before expanding this portfolio further and adding several additional properties into the mix. A topic close to his heart, Jeremy’s past charity fundraising achievements cover climbing Kilimanjaro, an expedition to the North Pole and much more. Catherine unfortunately has first-hand experience of the devastating effects of cancer, after her mother sadly died from the illness six years ago. As a result, she has been a volunteer with local cancer charity Maggie’s for four years, ever since the Newcastle branch opened. A fundamental resource for many people, Maggie’s has 29 centres across the UK and they each offer practical and emotional support. As explained by Catherine, “I see the positive impact Maggie’s has on people who visit the space. Often they come in very down and walk out with a sense of relief. It’s because of places like Maggie’s

that Jeremy and I decided to begin building the Charity Escapes Host Community.” A Charity Escapes partner now too, Maggie’s joins others including MAD Foundation, Changing Lives, YMCA North Tyneside and Bright Ideas Trust, all greatly benefitting from this creative endeavour. Assisted by supportive friends, Jeremy and Catherine have compiled a whole host of holiday destinations, from chalets to retreats, across destinations such as Cote D’Azur and Les Trois Valees. Other highlights include Northumberland hotspots and luxurious staycation options, should you wish to remain closer to home.

Visit www.stoswaldsuk.org for more information about volunteering, fundraising or making a donation.
