MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends, When Sandy and Laura came to Florissant over 70 years ago, they knew the opportunities provided at camp would give children the chance to grow, develop skills and build relationships in unique and impactful ways. They had a personal awareness of the power of being in the outdoors and in a respectful community of peers and nurturing staff. Today, their intuitive knowledge is confirmed by the many different research studies that have been conducted over the last decade that support the positive effects of camp. Though many of us don’t need to see research data to know the positive takeaways of being at camp, these studies are vital to getting the word out to others about the importance of camp and experiential education as a whole. What we do through our camp, outdoor education and adult programs are as real and relevant as ever, and they are more needed for today’s world than ever before. Underneath the fun and adventure of our programs, there has always been a purposeful foundation that grounds what we do. Growth mindset. Grit. Children in Nature. Social and Emotional Learning (EQ). Though they may not have been spelled out in these terms over the years, Sandy and Laura were very aware of these concepts, and they are at the forefront of youth development today. As they knew, and we know today, everyone benefits from time spent outdoors. Getting to the top of a 14’er after a challenging hike and moments of doubt or uncertainty builds confidence, appreciation for the natural world and an understanding of what it takes to achieve a challenging goal. Spending a night out around a campfire or under the stars grows wonder and amazement, inspires big thoughts and builds connections with our friends and beyond. Horseback trips develop empathy as we care for our horse and partner with it for a successful journey. Challenge courses and team building activities improve communication skills, collaboration and understanding of other perspectives. Having an in-person conversation with a friend while hiking or sitting at a high point beats an email or text exchange any day! COEC, through Sanborn Western Camps, High Trails Outdoor Education Center and The Nature Place, remains committed to our roots as we enter a new decade and continue to play a leading role in the world of education. It looks very different than a classroom, and that’s what makes it so powerful. Authentic relationships, connections to the natural world, physical engagement, wonder-filled thoughts and a whole lot of fun have been our foundation from the beginning, and they will continue to support us as we grow into our future. Sincerely,

Mike MacDonald

Dear Alums, Parents, Campers and Friends, Pictures from camp show a deep blanket of snow across the ranch and hides the daily buzz of preparation for the summer. Although, to think of it as just summer camp is really not fair (and hasn’t been for a long time). The Nature Place serves adult groups on a year round basis. Outdoor education starts in March and runs through mid-May and in the fall it runs well into November. Also, there is a never ending list of maintenance and, more importantly, improvements that are being made every day of the year. This year, thanks to the generous donations to our capital campaign, we are building our second replacement cabin at High Trails. It is a logistical tight rope act that begins with local approvals (unlike some of our earlier buildings that may or may not have just “sprung up”). This building project continues a tradition as old as camp: constant reinvestment in our physical plant and program. I think it is important for each of you to understand the accomplishments that our year round leadership team rack-up on a regular basis. As Trustees, we are able to see these things every day. As alums, parents, friends, etc. each of you should feel wonderful about COEC. Think about the effort, commitment and skill that goes into any one of the following:

• Enrollment for all sessions is near or at capacity (in some cases that has been true since before November 1 of last year!). This speaks to the value that campers and parents place on the experience we provide through our programs taught by an incredible summer staff. • Completed a $3,500,000 capital campaign funding new buildings and all important scholarships • High Trails co-directors, Ariella Rogge and Elizabeth Marable, received the annual Golden Quill award at the recent American Camp Association National Conference for an article they wrote for Camping Magazine.

• We have added a new co-director at Big Spring with over 30 years of experience. Matty Cook’s desire to join COEC and move his family to Colorado is a testament to the reputation the organization and the staff have on a national level • Our in-depth hiring process has led to increasingly higher quality summer staffs. I encourage you to look at the blog and read about these incredible young people who have enthusiastically embraced Sandy and Laura’s vision. • The senior staff continues to manage our finances in an exemplary manner. While not as exciting as goobered eggs on a mountain climb, the fact that COEC is debt free and operationally sustainable speaks to discipline and foresight. COEC is thriving. We are dealing with some of the most pressing issues facing children (and adults) today: Mental, Emotional, Social, Health (MESH), technology overuse, and inclusion. And, most importantly, we are seen as a leader in these and other areas. COEC would not be where it is today without the continued and vital support of folks like each of you. Our scholarships are funded by donations and our ability to continue to evolve our program and expand with initiatives like our property near Mt. Antero are a result of continued commitment from our broader community. On behalf of my fellow Trustees, I want to thank you for your continued interest and encourage you to keep-up with camp via social media, roadshows in your area or, better yet, a visit to the ranch where you will be able to see how our important mission is being carried out today. Regards,

Frank Williams Chair, COEC Board of Trustees

STAFF

PLACE CULTURE looking ahead...

This report shares the 2019 COEC story

and it was a very good year indeed. The entire decade beginning in 2010 brought many examples of positive change to our organization, while we continued to honor the mission established by Sandy and Laura in 1948. As we enter a new decade in 2020, we are excited and optimistic about our future. There are many reasons for this.

our staff:

COEC’s professional yearround staff continues to be the rock which supports our programs. Our directors, program directors, and assistant directors are committed, creative, and hard-working. Many of them have decades of experience working with us and they believe in our mission and embrace our servant leadership model. They are also thoughtful, nurturing, and a very fun group to be around. They constantly seek out professional development opportunities and provide the leadership which places Sanborn Western Camps, HTOEC, and The Nature Place on the cutting edge of youth development, outdoor education, and team-building and leadership training. These leaders work throughout the year to hire and train a remarkable group of seasonal staff who also embrace the mission of COEC and are enthusiastic about contributing to the experience of the children and adults who attend our programs. They can be found celebrating on a mountain top with campers from Big Spring, patiently teaching a High Trails camper how to

saddle her horse, explaining the difference between metamorphic and igneous rocks to sixth graders at HTOEC, or coaching community leaders on our ropes course at The Nature Place. They are quick to laugh, masters of s’more creation, and exceptional mentors.

our place: COEC’s 6000 acres of private mountain meadows and forests is unique and our commitment to maintaining its beauty and wildness remains unchanged. Campers are still awed by the view from the top of A-Bluff or the sunset seen from Top of the World. HTOEC students still find their “special spot” and gain a connection to the natural world. Nature Place guests still walk to High Tor and are transformed by the peace and serenity of the aspen grove. We know that during the next decade, thousands more campers, students, and guests will regain a sense of wonder by camping out at Bottlegate, hiking to the Bat Caves, or riding to Lost Lake. Appreciation and respect for the natural world remains a core focus of our mission, and research continues to show that humans thrive in nature. Thanks to the generous gifts of many alums and camp families, we have embarked on an ambitious program of renovating our oldest buildings and updating our facilities. We are committed to retaining the rustic quality of the camps, but know that one component of the excellence we strive for is attractive and functional buildings.

We have an outstanding maintenance crew dedicated to this goal and will be working throughout the next decade to maintain and improve the quality of our existing buildings.

our culture: Alums who visit the camps after many years often remark “It hasn’t changed at all!” and this is a good thing. They are reacting to the blue sky, the familiar smell of the pines, and the rustle of aspen leaves in the wind. But they are also reacting to the spirit of the place. Sandy and Laura set out to create a place where young people could learn to live together in a respectful community, engage in adventurous activities, and rediscover themselves in the out-of-doors. This has not changed. Though the outside world has grown increasingly tumultuous over the years, children and adults who come here will still find a respectful community based on friendship, kindness, fun, and laughter. We have become more intentional with our teaching of social and emotional skills over the years and those who come here will still learn responsibility, perseverance, and collaboration skills. And they will still gain resilience and confidence in their own abilities. Much has changed in 72 years since the camps were founded, and COEC has changed too. But much of value has been preserved here and, as we look ahead to the next decade, we are excited about the many opportunities we will have to positively impact the lives of those who join us.

“Both of my kids really appreciate the independence they experience at High Trails and Big Spring. The opportunity to exist without our micromanaging allows them to experience freedom and satisfaction they experience less the rest of the year. -2019 Camp Parent

WE REACHED THE SUMMIT! Celebrating the Sanborn Tomorrow Capital Campaign Thanks to our alums, camp families, and friends, our Sanborn Tomorrow Capital Campaign has achieved our $3,500,000 goal! Like climbing a mountain, this has been a remarkable team effort and we are grateful beyond words to all of you who have supported the Campaign and to those of you who will continue to support the campaign through your generous pledges.

We have also planted the seed of a scholarship endowment which signifies our long-term commitment to making the life-enhancing opportunities of camp and outdoor education available to all youth. Partnered with our annual Sandy and Laura Sanborn Scholarship Fund, the endowment will continue to increase the number of young people we can help well into the future.

The future of Sanborn Western Camps and Colorado Outdoor Education Center is now brighter and more secure because of your thoughtful gifts. We are able to replace some of our oldest facilities without raising our tuition and we have already begun this work.

We can all remember that view from the top of a Fourteener— beautiful, awe-inspiring, and a bit humbling. We now look out on a bright future for the camps and are humbled by your loyalty and confidence. We make a great team! Thank-you!

The Sanborn Tomorrow Capital Campaign allowed us to rebuild Jumping Juniper during the winter of 2017-2018. This winter, thanks to Capital Campaign donations, we are in the process of rebuilding Ponderosa. It will have a similar structure and feel as Juniper, plus we were able to keep the heart-shaped rock from Ponderosa’s original fireplace and integrate it into the new cabin.

Funds from the Capital Campaign also allowed us to build a much needed extension on the back side of the Big Spring Lodge. 2019 campers and staff enjoyed having more space during meals, parents and alums appreciated the commitment to keeping the original feel and look of the lodge, and Able Waiters raved about their ability to move EVEN faster with more space between tables.

The Giving Grove

The Giving Grove continues to “grow” thanks to the generous contributions of alums, camp parents and Friends of Camp. Sculptor Fred Clifford completed the two smaller trees in the fall of 2018, which now stand with the first tree. The sculpture is “planted” right inside our front gate where every visitor to the Ranch can admire it. Each person who has donated $10,000 or more to COEC has their name inscribed on a leaf of one of the trees. We are excited to honor our major donors in this way.

Forever Sanborn

It is possible to make a tax deductible gift to Colorado Outdoor Education Center through beneficiary designation in a will, 401k or similar plans, or life insurance policies. If you have done so or desire to do so, please let us know so that we can make you a member of “Forever Sanborn”, a group of donors who have included COEC in their estate planning.

THE PROGRAM EXCELLENCE FUND The Program Excellence Fund is an annual fund which helps us renovate and replace aging facilities. It also provides resources for program innovation and organizational sustainability as well as specialized staff training. We are extremely grateful to the many alums, camp families, and friends who have contributed to the Program Excellence Fund over the years. In 2019, we converted one of the tennis courts at High Trails to a multi-purpose sports court with $35,000 from the Program Excellence Funds. The girls have long asked for a real basketball court, and the court is also usable for many other games including Pickle Ball. The modular athletic surfacing of the new court is perfect for all sports and was popular with the girls during in-camp program times last summer.

“Camp was, without a doubt, the best experience of my life.”
