2018 Annual Report

Colorado Outdoor Education Center

Colorado Outdoor Education Center is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that operates three major programs on its 6000-acre property near Florissant, CO. These programs are Sanborn Western Camps (Big Spring and High Trails), High Trails Outdoor Education Center, and The Nature Place Conference Center.

Dear Friends,

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Sandy and Laura came to Florissant in 1947 with little more than a dream and a desire to make a difference. Along with some ‘friends with hammers’ they began building what has since grown into COEC’s three program entities -- Sanborn Western Camps, High Trails Outdoor Education Center and The Nature Place Conference and Retreat Center. For over 70 years their vision has grown, season by season, as an incredibly wide range of people came together to share in their dream. Campers, staff, students and guests from all across the US and beyond came to Florissant, CO (of all places!) to learn, contribute and join in the fun, adventure and wonder. At one of our Alum Re-Connect events last fall, a friend of camp spoke to the the group and said that it takes many raindrops to make a river. I loved his expression, and I have often thought about how a place such as this could come into being over all these years. There certainly has been the powerful guiding vision that Sandy and Laura created, but the richness and success of COEC, I believe, lies in the fact that every individual who comes here has the opportunity to contribute something of themselves to make the place better. I talk to staff and campers quite a bit about how it’s never been about how ‘one great person’ came in and made everything happen. It has been a wonderful journey of individuals coming together around the common mission, finding their place here

and bringing themselves fully to the experience. When people are able to do this they are more engaged, the community is enriched and the place as a whole thrives. Every person who comes to COEC can see that they are a part of something bigger and has the opportunity to contribute to it in their own, one-of-a-kind way. They can then take what was learned and practiced here out into the world, to make a difference beyond the borders of COEC. Your wide-ranging contributions to COEC over the years have made it what it is. As a camper, staff, student, guest or donor you have added to the richness, strength and vitality of an organization that is built around bringing people together to learn about themselves, each other and the world around us. You have also shared stories of how you have taken what you learned out into the world. These were all goals in 1948 when the first campers arrived at Big Spring, and they are as important today as they have ever been. Thank you for joining the journey, sharing your gifts, and helping to make Sandy and Laura’s dream of making a difference, both here and beyond, a reality. Sincerely,

Mike MacDonald

Dear Alums, Parents, Campers and Friends, On behalf of my fellow Trustees, I want to thank you for your ongoing support of COEC and its mission. In a world where “sustainability” has become a buzz word instead of a mantra, I want to bring into focus the importance of sustainability at COEC. As always, we strive to be exemplary stewards of the natural world. We weave ideas of preservation and protection for the natural world into virtually everything we do. These ideas are refreshed constantly by an outstanding staff that works tirelessly on a year round basis to keep our programs new, relevant and engaging. Of course, the best tool we have to connect campers, staff, students and adults to the natural world is our 6,000 pristine acres of property in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Yet sustainability extends beyond simply connecting people to the natural world and taking care of the earth. COEC’s leadership and Trustees constantly grapple with the idea of sustainability. Simply put: How do we preserve the organization that we have been entrusted to oversee? Our seventy year old organization has a great deal of momentum: outstanding new staff applicants are drawn to our mission and vision; alums, family, friends and word-of-mouth referrals help fill the camps, The Nature Place and HTOEC; fresh laundry magically appears back in the living units, clean and folded; and, thankfully, chippy dippy bars continue to come fresh and hot out of the bakery.

However, cabins do not renew themselves and scholarships are created only through the generosity of folks like you. As you know, we launched a capital campaign which is focused on these areas of critical long-term sustainability. We want to build a much larger permanent pool of money for scholarships. These funds allow children, who would otherwise not have the opportunity, to attend camp. Through the camp experience, they are exposed to a broader world; they gain new perspectives, discover new challenges, and develop lifelong friendships with people who may have differing opinions, experiences and values--but who learn to respectfully live, work and play together in the outdoors In addition, we have begun a long-term effort to rebuild cabins at High Trails and to expand the lodge and build a new health center at Big Spring. These improvements are absolutely needed. Many of our buildings are over 50 years old and, as some of us who are aging know, things do not always work as well as they did when we were at camp! Your support and affection for Sanborn Western Camps and COEC demonstrate why camp and outdoor education remain so important. Please join us in providing support through the campaign for these vital initiatives. Happy Trails,

Frank Williams Chair, COEC Board of Trustees

IMPACT

QUALITY SUSTAINABILITY COEC’s Strategic Plan, developed by

the Board of Trustees and our leadership team, identifies three areas of Strategic Focus: Impact, Quality, and Sustainability. Our impact is measured by the number of individuals who attend our program each year as well as those who may be touched by our outreach programs. Many of these numbers are included in the following reports about each of our programs.

Sustainability includes our constant efforts to protect the wonderful 6000-acre natural environment which provides a base for our programs. It also includes our responsibility to ensure our future as an organization by strengthening our financial resources, our programs, and our partnerships and relationships. Improving the quality of our programs is a daily goal of COEC staff and takes many forms. It includes constant evaluation and staying up-to-date with the latest trends. Food service, for instance, has changed dramatically over the past few years with the heightened awareness and incidence of food allergies. Our head cooks and kitchen supervisor spend the winter researching new recipes and creating updated menus. For all three of our programs, we now offer vegetarian and gluten-free options at every meal and are able to provide alternatives for those with multiple allergies. When Sandy and Laura founded Big Spring in 1948, there were no backpacks or lightweight tents and our mountaineering programs made a quantum leap when this equipment became available in the late

1960’s. In today’s world, the quality of outdoor equipment is improved almost annually and we are constantly watching for the latest developments in tents, backpacks, stoves and other camping equipment.

Mountain biking and rock climbing are two other programs which see consistent upgrading of equipment, and our practice is to purchase a percentage of the equipment for each program new each year so we can stay current with these advances. As mountain biking has become more popular, we have also done significant work on our trails and built a new course where beginners can learn the needed skills before heading out on the trails. And some of you will know, that within the past decade, we opened a major new rock climbing area at Wild Goat Mountain on the southern end of our property. It has more than 15 established climbs and has helped us create one of the top rock-climbing programs in the country. We are also constantly working to maintain and upgrade our facilities. Our maintenance team of six year-round carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and general handymen repair, remodel, paint and monitor the more than 70 camp buildings. In addition, we have begun an ambitious program of replacing our most worn out facilities and in the past few years have built new pools at Big Spring and High Trails, new tent frames at Big Spring, a new Health Center and a new Jumping Juniper cabin at High Trails. These have all been made possible by the generous donations of our alums, camp families, and friends

of camp.

Quality is more than our physical setting, food, and equipment. New information on optimal youth development and best-practice education becomes available every year and we stay abreast of these evolving fields by making a significant commitment to professional development for our staff. During the winter, our entire year-round professional staff attends the American Camp Association National Conference as well as ACA regional conferences and other relevant educational events and trainings. Information gained over the winter is then used to refine and improve our seasonal staff trainings, which are always a work in progress. We are also engaged in our own outcomes research which provides valuable information on which of our practices are working well and which can benefit by refinement. Do campers and parents report that they gained team-building and collaboration skills at camp? Do they report increased resilience, tolerance, empathy, and responsibility? And, we then evaluate our program to see where we might do a better job of teaching and encouraging these critical social and emotional skills. Our pursuit of quality is part of the fiber of COEC, and our staff are dedicated to constant improvement—in our programs, our food, our equipment, our facilities, and in the benefits we provide for those who come here. Our goal is to be the best!

which helps us to renovate and replace aging facilities. It also provides resources for program innovation and organizational sustainability as well as specialized staff training. We are extremely grateful to the many alums, camp families, and friends who have contributed to the Program Excellence Fund over the years. Jumping Juniper In 2018, $78,000 from the Program Excellence Fund was used in the rebuilding of Juniper cabin at High Trails. The remainder of the cost of this project came from funds donated to our Sanborn Tomorrow Campaign.

Sports Court at High Trails The girls have long asked for a real basketball court and other games like Pickle Ball are becoming popular. We plan to convert one of the existing tennis courts to a multi-purpose sports court with modular athletic surfacing. The cost for this project, which will be paid from the Program Excellence Fund, will be about $35,000 and our goal is to have it completed before camp starts next summer.

$3,500,000 Our summit goal for the Sanborn Tomorrow Capital Campaign $2,400,000 Pledges prior to the beginning of our 70th Summer

$3,250,000 Pledges as of February 1st, 2019 $3,050,000 After the Sanborn 70 Reunion

$1,200,000 in initial pledges by COEC Board members and staff

In August of 2018, during our Alum Reunion, we

announced the public phase of our new Capital Campaign. The Campaign has two goals: to create a Sanborn Scholarship Fund Endowment to augment the Sandy and Laura Sanborn Scholarship Fund which has been supported for two decades by annual giving and to help us renovate and replace some of our aging facilities. The Sanborn Scholarship Fund Endowment will signify our long-term commitment to making the life-enhancing opportunities of camp and outdoor education available to all youth, and to provide the additional funding needed to award more full tuition grants to our growing pool of applicants. The COEC Board of Trustees has also determined to create an endowed scholarship within this fund to honor the contributions of Jane Sanborn over many years. Specific facilities targeted for capital improvement include the oldest cabins at High Trails, an expansion of the Big Spring Lodge, and a new health center and program center at Big Spring. Due to generous early

gifts, we were able to build a new Jumping Juniper cabin on the site of the old cabin last year. The cabin, which is ADA accessible, has up-to-date code features like a fire suppression system and received rave reviews from the campers who lived there last summer as well as from HTOEC students and teachers. Projects underway for 2019 include the expansion of the Big Spring Lodge and, late next fall, the replacement of Ponderosa cabin at High Trails. We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from our alums, camp families and friends and are happy to announce that we have now received gifts and pledges of $3,250,000 for this five-year campaign. We are well on our way to achieving our $3,500,000 goal. If you would like more information on the Sanborn Tomorrow Capital Campaign, please contact Jane Sanborn (719-748-3341, Jane@Sanbornwesterncamps. com) or Jerry McLain (719-748-3341, Jerry@Sanbornwesterncamps.com)

More Jumping Juniper Fun from Summer 2018! The Giving Trees

The Giving Tree, which we unveiled during our Alum Reunion in August, has now become a grove (a small grove). Over the fall, sculptor Fred Clifford completed the two smaller trees which now stand with the first tree. The sculpture is “planted right inside our front gate where every visitor to the Ranch can admire it. Each person who has donated $10,000 or more to COEC has their name inscribed on a leaf of one of the trees. We are excited to honor our major donors in this way.
