Student-Athlete Feature: Tay Berry

If anyone on the Samford football team could say they were born to play football, it would probably be graduate defensive lineman Tay Berry

Like a lot of college football players, his involvement with the game started at a very young age He said a couple of family members were influences in him starting to play

“I started playing football when I was around six years old,” Berry said “I was introduced to it by my dad It was something where they just wanted me to get tough and I stuck with it ever since then and I’ve had a bunch of mentors throughout my life . I had a cousin that was playing football at the time that influenced me, but he’s gone now, he died about two years ago . But he was playing football, he played nine years, he just influenced me to keep going . He was a mentor to me . ”

His love of the game of football started at that young age . But what was different about Berry is he mostly stayed with football only, barely trying other sports .

“I tried basketball,” Berry said . “But my heart wasn’t in basketball the way my heart was in football . ”

Berry said, even at that young age, he felt like

he understood the game quickly after picking the sport up

“When I first started playing football, it was nothing to me and it stuck with me,” Berry said “Football is a big part of my life I know football like the back of my hand now, I’ve been doing it for a long time I know the ins and outs of football ”

Berry is a native of Flora, Mississippi, and he attended Madison Central High School In his career for Madison Central, Berry accumulated 121 tackles, nine sacks, three forced fumbles and 13 quarterback hurries . He was a two-time team captain and two-time All-Region team member . As a senior, he was named first team All-State, tallying 53 tackles, three sacks, seven tackles for loss and one fumble recovery .

When Berry was going through the recruitment process, he almost missed the opportunity to come to Samford .

“One day I was working out, going through offseason training for high school and I got a phone call, and I actually missed the call,” Berry said . “I checked my voicemail, and it was Samford . He was like, hey, I’m calling from Samford and just wanted to let you know we were reaching out, so when I

24

returned the call, he told me he wanted to offer me a scholarship here . Samford offered a scholarship and Southeast Missouri State offered me a scholarship . But when I came up here, my parents fell in love with the school, I fell in love with the school . It just grew on me, and I felt like it was the place God wanted me to go . So, that’s where I ended up going . ”

Berry came to Samford in the fall of 2018 as a freshman . That season, he played in five games, tallying six tackles, including one solo stop . Berry said it was a tough transition from high school to college football, but he says once he caught on, he felt comfortable playing at the college level .

“It was a big challenge because once I got here, I wasn’t the biggest, the fastest guy on the field, every guy here was either as big or bigger, as strong or stronger, faster,” Berry said . “I had to adjust because the speed of the game was 10 times faster than high school was . I think I got my feet wet as a freshman and then I started playing more and more, once I got my feet wet, I was fine with it . ”

As a sophomore in 2019, Berry saw action in eight games, contributing 13 tackles, including four solo stops After the fall of 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Berry and the Bulldogs played a season in the spring of 2021 The Bulldogs played just seven games that spring, but Berry started all seven contests, finishing the season with 26 tackles, nine solo stops and two and a half tackles for loss In the 2021 fall season, he started nine games, playing in 10 contests, tallying 30 tackles, nine solo stops and four and a half tackles for loss

So far this season, Berry has played in all eight games He has contributed 22 total tackles, two and a half tackles for loss and one fumble recovery The Bulldogs enter today’s game against VMI with an impressive record of 7-1 overall and 5-0 in Southern Conference play . Berry talked about how he feels he has improved during his career at Samford .

“My knowledge of the game has improved a lot,” Berry said . “I know so many different things that I wish I knew when I was in high school that would help me be successful . My awareness in football has gotten better, I learned to take

studying film more seriously, that helps me a lot in my game . Breaking down film, recognizing blocks, recognizing offensive linemen’s stances, all those things have helped me tremendously and that has been a big area of growth for me . ”

Prior to the 2022 season, a new defensive coaching staff was brought in, led by defensive coordinator Chris Boone . Berry’s position coach as a defensive lineman is Darien Moody, also in his first season at Samford . Berry talked about how this season has gone with the new defensive staff .

“There’s a tremendous difference,” Berry said . “It’s more physical, you’ve got to take pride in doing your job . It’s a three-down front, so they’re trying to block three guys with five people, sometimes six, so we’re going against two people at a time, and we’re taking pride in doing our job and taking each play, play-by-play . This defense here, we are all brothers and we’re going to do what we do for the guy next to me and the guy next to him and we’re just going to lay it all on the line . ”

Berry has already received his degree from Samford in sport administration, and he is currently working on his MBA Berry said when he finishes at Samford, he would like to stay involved with the sport he loves

“My goal is to continue playing as long as I can,” Berry said “As long as God lets me play, I’ll continue playing Whether it’s NFL, CFL, XFL, USFL, any of those leagues, I’ll continue playing football That’s how much I love playing ball And also, once I’m done playing ball, I just want to give back the knowledge I have to guys that are younger than me and that’s why I want to go into coaching At the college level or the high school level, it doesn’t even matter I want to start at the college level and then maybe retire at the high school level ”

Berry’s love of the game of football is obvious when talking to him . Once his playing career is over, whether that is from college or professional football, there is no doubt he will be a positive influence on the young men he coaches .

10 Questions with J.R. Tran-Reno

In each game program this season, we will let you get to know a little more about a Samford football player with our series, “10 Questions With . ” For this edition, Marketing Assistant Haley Sue Harbison sat down with wide receiver J .R . Tran-Reno .

What made you choose Samford?

Straight out of high school, I had always had interest and known what Samford was being from Birmingham, but I had some bigger opportunities right out of high school, so I decided to take advantage of that Then I just really wanted to come back closer to home, be closer to my family I already knew Coach Hatch and what his offense brought to the table and what kind of culture Samford had with a lot of connections here, so that’s really why I wanted to come back home and represent Birmingham

What is your best memory with the team so far?

I have to say after the Kennesaw game, which was a really good, fun memory . Just having my high school quarterback (Michael Hiers) back here and

celebrating that win with him . Getting a big win over a highly ranked opponent just kind of sparked that season off . Oh, and also my first touchdown this year, then I was more excited to see my teammates so happy for me .

What was going through your mind after your first collegiate touchdown?

Michael Heirs actually handed me off my first high school touchdown and threw me my first college touchdown So, we’ve got a lot of good memories together and just being able to have that with him and all of these guys with me and years of hard work finally coming to fruition He probably doesn’t even remember this, but I met Michael when I was going into seventh grade and he was going into eighth, and he was the starting quarterback for the middle school team, and I was playing quarterback coming up and I remember the confidence he instilled in me He came over to me and was like, “hey, this is your team, you’ve got it ” I will never forget that .

32 samfordsports.com

How would you describe the Samford football team?

I would describe it as just a fun team full of good guys, honestly . I know transferring here there was not really even a transition really . I already knew someone on the team, so it was filled with a lot of people like me, too, so it is the place for me .

How do you get in the zone before a game?

You know it has really changed over the years . In high school, I was a music guy . Now I like worship music and reading my Bible and pray and be in the moment . Focus in .

What is your goal for yourself as a player and your goal for the whole team?

My goal for myself as a player is just to help out any way I can, whether that’s scoring touchdowns, making blocks, whatever they need me to do, I am willing to do it I am most excited about making a run for the SoCon championship with this team We are in a pretty good position Michael and I actually lost out on a high school state championship, so I am hoping we get a chance at redemption

Is there another player you look up to?

I have always looked up to Julio Jones Growing up here in the state of Alabama, that’s why I wear the number eight I think I like him because he always came and got his work done and was never causing problems off the field Now, I like to just keep up with my friends playing!

What is something nobody knows about you?

Skincare . I really try to not use anything without natural products . Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, moisturizer- the whole nine . I like to take care of myself . I also use an eye mask when I sleep .

What is your favorite thing about the football team?

The camaraderie And the relationships the players have with the coaches Coming from another school it was kind of this hierarchy, but here we’ve got coach Drew and other guys that we can just talk to A closeknit bond between the team Nobody’s not friends with anyone

What legacy do you want to leave behind?

I want to leave a legacy of someone who was willing to do anything for the team- a selfless guy Not only willing to do anything for the team but also my friends outside of football and just be the best I can be .

Seibert Stadium

Seibert Stadium has been home to the Samford football team since 1958, one year after the campus was moved from East Lake to its present site . Over the years, the stadium has seen some memorable football, including the Bobby Bowden era (1959–62), a one-loss season in 1971 and the Terry Bowden era, which ended with a 14-game Bulldog winning streak in the stadium .

The field is named after legendary Coach Bobby Bowden, while the stadium is named for the late F Page Seibert, a Daytona Beach, Florida, businessman who donated money for the completion of the stadium in 1961 with the addition of stands on the west side . Originally, the stadium had the current gatehouse and seating on the east side

The first game was played Friday, Sept . 26, 1958, with Samford losing to Sewanee, 21-0 Bobby Bowden brought Samford (then known as Howard College) its first win at Seibert on Oct . 3, 1959, as the Bulldogs defeated the Tennessee Tech “B” team, 34-0 The first win against varsity competition came two weeks later when the Bulldogs defeated Millsaps, 26-0

Seibert Stadium has undergone numerous improvements during the past few years . Before the 2009 season, the Cooney Family Field House was opened in the South end zone of the stadium . The field house was renamed the Sullivan-Cooney Family Field House during the 2014 season

The facility includes locker rooms, training rooms,

meeting rooms and coaches offices for Samford’s football program . A second-level terrace overlooks Seibert Stadium . A third level provides for future university expansion

In fall 2005, the original grass surface was replaced with an LSR Blade Synthetic Surface The turf was replaced with a similar surface prior to the 2014 season .

The four-level Bashinsky Press Tower was completed before the 1989 season . This GeorgianColonial structure , which contains complete facilities for print and electronic media on the third level, reserved seating for guests on the second level, and a concession stand and restroom facilities on the ground floor, was renovated prior to the 2021 fall season .

Also in 1989, more than 200 theatre-type reserved seats were added in front of the press tower, bringing the seating capacity to 6,700 . Aluminum seating replaced the original wooden seats A scoreboard featuring an electronic matrix message board was added before the 1994 season

Prior to the 2019 season, a brand-new state-of-the art video board was added in the north end zone of the stadium

Sullivan-Cooney Family Field House

Prior to the start of practice for the 2009 season, the Samford football program moved into the Cooney Family Field House During the 2014 season, the facility was renamed in honor of then head coach Pat Sullivan and is now known as the Sullivan-Cooney Family Field House .

The field house houses a locker room, players’ lounge, training room, weight room, equipment room, coaches’ offices, meeting rooms and a film room .

The field house, which is 39,400 square feet, cost approximately $8 million dollars, with all money privately donated .

The Cooney Family Field House was made possible with a lead gift from Birmingham business executive and Samford graduate Gary Cooney, vice chairman of McGriff, Seibels & Williams, Inc , one of the nation’s leading insurance brokerage firms .

Cooney said he wanted to honor his parents, the late John and Patricia Cooney, and other family members with the naming

“Our family has a long history with Samford, and my hope is that these gifts will encourage others to support this great university,” Cooney said at the time of the dedication . “We have great confidence in the leadership of Dr Westmoreland and our good friend, Coach Pat Sullivan, and we want to help have a positive influence on young student-athletes ”

Cooney graduated from Samford in 1974 . He was a member of the school’s 1971 team that won the NCAA Division II West Region Championship

Academic Enhancement Program

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has strongly enforced academic reform this decade as it pertains to student-athletes’ continuing eligibility and ultimate college graduation Because of the tightening of new legislation, academic support services throughout the country have been highlighted to spearhead the additional success that is needed for student-athletes to earn a degree

The academic success for Samford University student-athletes begins with the Academic Enhancement Program [AEP] The AEP was developed in the early 1990s and is based on individual instruction with student-athletes who are integrated within a caring environment that is conducive to academic success

The AEP system is designed to provide Samford’s student-athletes with the necessary guidance, personal attention and academic skills— enhancement activities to help them have the most positive educational and personal experience possible . Student-athletes are integrated within a foundation of the university’s general education core curriculum that emphasizes basic skills for academic achievement .

Tutors and academic mentors assist athletes in writing courses, foreign languages, math, science and business, to name a few . With tutorial sessions incorporating improved study techniques, the AEP puts student-athletes in position to succeed and become independent learners .

The AEP environment includes a computer lab/classroom, private tutor rooms and quiet study space .

In conjunction with the Career Development Center, the Writing Center, the Academic Success Center and all student support services, the AEP is a bridge from freshman orientation to graduation and professional life .

The AEP strives to meet the needs, concerns and overall welfare of all student-athletes Each May, the academic enhancement office honors studentathletes who have achieved a 3 0 GPA or better over the last two full terms

LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM

The Department of Athletics offers a variety of support programs for student-athletes, including

some NCAA Student Affairs programming This student development program exists to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting There are five focus areas that address student-athlete development

Commitment to Academic Excellence: To support the academic progress of student-athletes toward intellectual development and graduation

Commitment to Athletic Excellence: To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletics programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of student-athletes

Commitment to Personal Development: To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills

Commitment to Career Development: To encourage student-athletes to develop and pursue career and life goals

Commitment to Service: To engage studentathletes in service to their campus and surrounding community

Throughout the year, student-athletes attend the programs in the five commitment areas that are most relevant and helpful to them at their current stage of development . This is done through workshops and seminars, campus partnerships and other programming throughout the year . Topics include financial management, time management, media relations, spiritual development, choosing a major and a career, résumé writing, and sportsmanship . Speakers include faculty members, coaches, administrators, business leaders and former student-athletes .

All AEP programming is designed to enhance and support the academic and athletic endeavors of student-athletes . Student-athletes gain preparation for success in life, develop enhanced interpersonal skills, build positive self-esteem, develop leadership skills and make meaningful contributions to their communities

Ask Before You Act

Compliance with NCAA rules is of utmost importance to Samford University . As a member of the NCAA, Samford is responsible for the actions of its coaches, student-athletes, employees, alumni, donors, boosters and friends As such, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with these important items concerning NCAA rules and always remember to ASK BEFORE YOU ACT: 205-726-4244 | compliance@samford.edu Twitter: @Samford_Rules

FIVE IMPORTANT RULES

1 . Only coaches and athletics department staff members are permitted to be involved in the recruiting process . Alumni, friends and “other representatives of athletic interest” who are not employed by the university are not permitted to contact a prospect (or members of the prospect’s family) by letter, telephone or in person (on or off campus) for the purpose of soliciting participation in the athletics program Samford faculty members are permitted to have contact with prospects on campus only

2 A prospect remains a prospect even after he or she signs a Letter of Intent or financial aid agreement to attend the university . The prospect does not lose prospect status until the start of classes at Samford or the beginning of official team practice prior to the start of classes .

3 The prohibition of contact with a prospect is intended to relate to unavoidable incidental contacts with a prospect by representatives of a member institution’s athletics interest It is understood that such a contact is not prearranged by the athletics representative or an athletics department staff member; is not made for the purpose of recruitment of the prospect; and involves only normal civility For example, if you meet a high school student or junior college student-athlete, you can talk with him or her about anything except Samford athletics . If you are attending a public function and find yourself talking to the parents of a prospect, you can talk about anything that doesn’t relate to the athletics department

4 If a student-athlete accepts any benefits or special consideration based on his or her status as an athlete or because of athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose all eligibility for intercollegiate athletic participation Do not do anything for prospective or enrolled studentathletes without specific authorization from the Samford Athletics Compliance Office

5 . Representatives of athletics interest (boosters) are reminded that NCAA rules regarding enrolled studentathletes remain in effect throughout the entire year, including summer breaks . When student-athletes complete their final season of eligibility, they must abide by NCAA rules until the end of that academic year and/ or until they are no longer receiving athletics financial aid

Southern Conference

The Southern Conference

The Southern Conference, which enters its 102nd year in 2022-23, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models

The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics . From establishing the first postseason college basketball tournament (1921), to tackling the issue of freshman eligibility (1922), to developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the first conference to install the 3-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer .

The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pac-12 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination .

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition Hundreds of Southern Conference studentathletes have been recognized on CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams . A total of 20 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions, most recently in 2012-13, when former Wofford volleyball player Rachel Woodlee earned the prestigious award

The conference currently consists of 10 members in six states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 20 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships

The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, South Carolina A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first-class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents

Membership history

On Feb 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee

Dr S V Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N W Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member . With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money

Play began in the fall of 1921, and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league, including Tulane (which had

attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt VMI joined in 1923 and Duke was added in 1929 .

By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools C P “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec 9, 1932, at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tennessee There, it announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference Members of the new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt

According to the minutes of the meeting, Georgia’s Dr Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines Florida’s Dr J J Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large . The resignations were accepted, and the withdrawing schools formed the new league, which began play in 1933

The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions, including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee

The second major shift occurred some 20 years later By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 colleges and universities Another split occurred when seven schools – Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest – departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference, which began play in 1953 The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary

A third major shift occurred in 2012-13, when five members announced their departures and three schools were added College of Charleston announced its decision to leave for the Colonial Athletic Association following the 2012-13 season, while Appalachian State (Sun Belt), Davidson (Atlantic 10), Elon (Colonial) and Georgia Southern (Sun Belt) announced they would depart following the 2013-14 campaign At the Southern Conference’s 2013 spring meetings in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the league officially extended invitations to former members ETSU and VMI, as well as Mercer, to join the league for the 2014-15 academic year

Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 10 institutions and a footprint that spans six states: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and
