Salolampi in 2017 John Jussi Hanson Is New Salolampi Foundation President At the Salolampi Foundation board meeting on January 28, 2017, John Hanson succeeded Susan Harstad as President of Salolampi Foundation for a two-year term. John discovered Salolampi late in life and is glad he did. Since he retired, he has attended Adult Week, Family Week, the new Skinny Weekend, and work weekends. John has been a member of the Salolampi Foundation board, working on the Sanomat, scholarship and public relations/publicity committees, and serving as President Elect.
Highlights for Spring & Summer, 2017 NEW “Cultural Weekend” – March 25–26 Make Finnish foods and crafts with us while enjoying a retreat weekend at Salolampi! These new weekend programs (one in the Spring and one in the Fall) were created for everyone, but especially aimed at adults between ages 20–40 who, for various reasons, find it difficult to enroll in a full week of adult programming. This weekend also serves as a bridge for folks who have minimal Finnish language skills, but desire to experience the magic of Salolampi. Many Options for One-Week Sessions There are more One-Week Sessions than ever before. We are committed to making a child’s first Salolampi experience go smoothly! Students balance more summer activities than in the past, so more weeks of exploration help a child find time to attend.

One of John’s goals as president is to continue to use and explore multiple communication formats to stay in touch with villagers, potential villagers, donors, and others who support Salolampi. John also looks forward to expanding planned giving opportunities, especially taking advantage of tax-free direct contributions from IRA and retirement plans. All of John’s ancestors came from Finland—Kemi, Ii, Poulanka, Kangasniemi, and Mikkeli. John’s son and cousin also enjoy Salolampi—class time, activities, music, crafts, games, kyykkä, and special programs. “It goes without saying,” he concludes, “that the food goes down easily, especially the pulla and rye bread; and we never leave hungry. All of these make for grand experiences, but one tops them all— rantasauna (sauna by the lake). We will celebrate 40 years of Salolampi in 2018 and 100 years of Finland’s Independence this year. Kesämökkipäivä (Summer Cabin Day) – Sunday, June 25, 2–8 PM Join us for a casual familyfriendly day of sauna, swimming, makkara (sausage), and tikkuleipä (bread dough) cooked on the campfire. Efforts are also underway to have a cultural guest presentation. The afternoon/evening event is FREE, so please join us! NEW Nordic Family Week – July 17–22 The Salolampi site will host the first mixed Family Week with Finnish, Swedish, and Norwegian participants. Salolampi, Sjölunden (Swedish Village), and Skogfjorden (Norwegian Village) will have staff members to interact with families of all kinds. This is a perfect way to plan a multi-generational family vacation while experiencing an ancestral or new language and culture. Villagers will be able to participate in a specific language track and participate in full group evening programs that highlight the commonalities between the Nordic nations.

For a semester in 2011, Helvi studied at the University of Tampere and for two years in the Education and Globalization Program at the University of Oulu, where she will soon receive her master’s degree. Helvi says she is grateful to the Salolampi community, which challenged her and encouraged her Finnish pursuits and opened the door to international experiences, interests, and friends. Helvi enjoys making Finnish food, crafting, studying languages, teaching the 0–3 year old group at Minnesotan Suomi-koulu, and serving as the Chief Sustenance Officer of the 612 Sauna Society. We are delighted to welcome Helvi, with her considerable skills, energy, and leadership, to the Salolampi Foundation Board.

The Year of Finland really began for me when I had the honor to represent Salolampi in Washington DC at the Finlandia Foundation National meeting in November 2016. This meeting brought all chapters together and provided a forum for sharing past successes, networking with new friends, and planning for robust and collective future. As a place of authentic Finnish language and cultural learning, we were happy to interact with Ambassador Kirsti Kauppi, the Finnish Embassy staff, FFN board members and all the FF members participating. We truly believe Salolampi offers the most authentic experience to begin and to continue Finnish language and cultural acquisition before travel to Finland. Finland 100 Theme: Yhdessä/Together Salolampi will be present and visible in many ways during 2017. We will be out and about networking and marketing our unique language immersion method, partnering with groups such as Finlandia Foundation National and local Finnish-American groups. We were honored to have a presence at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis in mid-January when Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra performed an all-Finnish program in conjunction with Ambassador Kauppi’s first visit to Minnesota, which ultimately kicked off the American celebration of Finland 100. Salolampi/ CLV is now proudly included on the Finland 100 traveling sauna as one of its official sponsors,

During fall Adult Week 2016, Salolampi hosted nineteen participants from ten different states and provinces. We enjoyed wonderful meals, singing classic and contemporary songs, folk dancing to live music, relaxing in the sauna, and creating hilarious skits. The evenings offered programs such as simulating a popular Finnish game show called BumtsiBum!, engaging with contemporary Finnish films, and not taking ourselves too seriously during wacky Olympics. Salolampi Adult Weeks are the perfect time to join a community of people who are keenly interested in Finnish language and culture. Whether you have grown up speaking Finnish or have sought out opportunities to dive into Finnish language and culture only recently, we welcome you to experience the enrichment, inspiration, and all-around fun that encompass Adult Weeks at Salolampi! As Salolampi Foundation President (2015–2016), I learned how much time, effort, and organization it takes for volunteer groups like ours to run smoothly Susan Susanna and harmoniously. Harstad I greatly appreciate Larry Lauri Saukko’s past leadership, Amy Iida Tervola Hultberg’s current leadership as Dean and Elizabeth Helvi Brauer’s future leadership of Salolampi’s programs that have been designed for all ages. This appreciation extends to all counseling and teaching staff who create the unforgettable language and cultural immersion magic for which Salolampi is known. As Salolampi is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2018 and the Salolampi Foundation board’s 40th anniversary in 2019, it’s a great time to reflect. How many thousands of lives have been enriched by a connection to Salolampi, perhaps traveling to Finland and confidently communicating in Finnish? My life has been enriched with many lifelong friendships made at Salolampi. During fall Adult Week 2016, Salolampi hosted nineteen participants from ten different states and provinces. We enjoyed wonderful meals, singing classic and contemporary songs, folk dancing to live music, relaxing in the sauna, and creating hilarious skits. The evenings offered programs such as simulating a popular Finnish game show called BumtsiBum!, engaging with contemporary Finnish films, and not taking ourselves too seriously during wacky Olympics. Salolampi Adult Weeks are the perfect time to join a community of people who are keenly interested in Finnish language and culture. Whether you have grown up speaking Finnish or have sought out opportunities to dive into Finnish language and culture only recently, we welcome you to experience the enrichment, inspiration, and all-around fun that encompass Adult Weeks at Salolampi! As Salolampi Foundation President (2015–2016), I learned how much time, effort, and organization it takes for volunteer groups like ours to run smoothly Susan Susanna and harmoniously. Harstad I greatly appreciate Larry Lauri Saukko’s past leadership, Amy Iida Tervola Hultberg’s current leadership as Dean and Elizabeth Helvi Brauer’s future leadership of Salolampi’s programs that have been designed for all ages. This appreciation extends to all counseling and teaching staff who create the unforgettable language and cultural immersion magic for which Salolampi is known. As Salolampi is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2018 and the Salolampi Foundation board’s 40th anniversary in 2019, it’s a great time to reflect. How many thousands of lives have been enriched by a connection to Salolampi, perhaps traveling to Finland and confidently communicating in Finnish? My life has been enriched with many lifelong friendships made at Salolampi. Salolampi in 2017 John Jussi Hanson Is New Salolampi Foundation President At the Salolampi Foundation board meeting on January 28, 2017, John Hanson succeeded Susan Harstad as President of Salolampi Foundation for a two-year term. John discovered Salolampi late in life and is glad he did. Since he retired, he has attended Adult Week, Family Week, the new Skinny Weekend, and work weekends. John has been a member of the Salolampi Foundation board, working on the Sanomat, scholarship and public relations/publicity committees, and serving as President Elect.
Highlights for Spring & Summer, 2017 NEW “Cultural Weekend” – March 25–26 Make Finnish foods and crafts with us while enjoying a retreat weekend at Salolampi! These new weekend programs (one in the Spring and one in the Fall) were created for everyone, but especially aimed at adults between ages 20–40 who, for various reasons, find it difficult to enroll in a full week of adult programming. This weekend also serves as a bridge for folks who have minimal Finnish language skills, but desire to experience the magic of Salolampi. Many Options for One-Week Sessions There are more One-Week Sessions than ever before. We are committed to making a child’s first Salolampi experience go smoothly! Students balance more summer activities than in the past, so more weeks of exploration help a child find time to attend.

One of John’s goals as president is to continue to use and explore multiple communication formats to stay in touch with villagers, potential villagers, donors, and others who support Salolampi. John also looks forward to expanding planned giving opportunities, especially taking advantage of tax-free direct contributions from IRA and retirement plans. All of John’s ancestors came from Finland—Kemi, Ii, Poulanka, Kangasniemi, and Mikkeli. John’s son and cousin also enjoy Salolampi—class time, activities, music, crafts, games, kyykkä, and special programs. “It goes without saying,” he concludes, “that the food goes down easily, especially the pulla and rye bread; and we never leave hungry. All of these make for grand experiences, but one tops them all— rantasauna (sauna by the lake). We will celebrate 40 years of Salolampi in 2018 and 100 years of Finland’s Independence this year. We are very grateful.”
Kesämökkipäivä (Summer Cabin Day) – Sunday, June 25, 2–8 PM Join us for a casual familyfriendly day of sauna, swimming, makkara (sausage), and tikkuleipä (bread dough) cooked on the campfire. Efforts are also underway to have a cultural guest presentation. The afternoon/evening event is FREE, so please join us! NEW Nordic Family Week – July 17–22 The Salolampi site will host the first mixed Family Week with Finnish, Swedish, and Norwegian participants. Salolampi, Sjölunden (Swedish Village), and Skogfjorden (Norwegian Village) will have staff members to interact with families of all kinds. This is a perfect way to plan a multi-generational family vacation while experiencing an ancestral or new language and culture. Villagers will be able to participate in a specific language track and participate in full group evening programs that highlight the commonalities between the Nordic nations.
Studies and Sociology and Anthropology and a minor in Spanish. For a semester in 2011, Helvi studied at the University of Tampere and for two years in the Education and Globalization Program at the University of Oulu, where she will soon receive her master’s degree. Helvi says she is grateful to the Salolampi community, which challenged her and encouraged her Finnish pursuits and opened the door to international experiences, interests, and friends. Helvi enjoys making Finnish food, crafting, studying languages, teaching the 0–3 year old group at Minnesotan Suomi-koulu, and serving as the Chief Sustenance Officer of the 612 Sauna Society. We are delighted to welcome Helvi, with her considerable skills, energy, and leadership, to the Salolampi Foundation Board.

The Year of Finland really began for me when I had the honor to represent Salolampi in Washington DC at the Finlandia Foundation National meeting in November 2016. This meeting brought all chapters together and provided a forum for sharing past successes, networking with new friends, and planning for robust and collective future. As a place of authentic Finnish language and cultural learning, we were happy to interact with Ambassador Kirsti Kauppi, the Finnish Embassy staff, FFN board members and all the FF members participating. We truly believe Salolampi offers the most authentic experience to begin and to continue Finnish language and cultural acquisition before travel to Finland. As Salolampi Foundation President (2015–2016), I learned how much time, effort, and organization it takes for volunteer groups like ours to run smoothly Susan Susanna and harmoniously. Harstad I greatly appreciate Larry Lauri Saukko’s past leadership, Amy Iida Tervola Hultberg’s current leadership as Dean and Elizabeth Helvi Brauer’s future leadership of Salolampi’s programs that have been designed for all ages. This appreciation extends to all counseling and teaching staff who create the unforgettable language and cultural immersion magic for which Salolampi is known. As Salolampi is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2018 and the Salolampi Foundation board’s 40th anniversary in 2019, it’s a great time to reflect. How many thousands of lives have been enriched by a connection to Salolampi, perhaps traveling to Finland and confidently communicating in Finnish? My life has been enriched with many lifelong friendships made at Salolampi. Lauri Saukko’s “Year” Books (Opi I and Opi II)
2017 Adult Week Registration Rates Reduced! The Concordia Language Villages has revised Adult Week registration rates for 2017. The original total rate of $925 has been reduced to $825 and the tuition for seniors (age 65+) and college students has been reduced from $850 to $750. The three Salolampi Foundation scholarships available to 2017 Salolampi Adult Week villagers will continue as reported in 2016. Those who register as a FIRST TIME villager will be eligible for a $50 discount. An EARLY discount of $50 is also available to all who register before April 1 for the May Adult session and to those who register before July 1 for the September Adult Week. An Adult Week villager traveling more than 500 miles is eligible for a $50 travel scholarship. The scholarships encourage new and returning villagers. Each session continues to attract villagers from near and far for a week that bonds friendships and greater appreciation of the language and culture.
COLLEGE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN FINNISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE College and university students may apply for scholarships at a 50% reduced rate for these 2017 Salolampi sessions: Spring Adult Week – May 21–27 Family Week – June 12–17 Fall Adult Week – September 11–17 Visit salolampi.org for application and registration info.

2017 Adult Week Registration Rates Reduced! The Concordia Language Villages has revised Adult Week registration rates for 2017. The original total rate of $925 has been reduced to $825 and the tuition for seniors (age 65+) and college students has been reduced from $850 to $750. The three Salolampi Foundation scholarships available to 2017 Salolampi Adult Week villagers will continue as reported in 2016. Those who register as a FIRST TIME villager will be eligible for a $50 discount. An EARLY discount of $50 is also available to all who register before April 1 for the May Adult session and to those who register before July 1 for the September Adult Week. An Adult Week villager traveling more than 500 miles is eligible for a $50 travel scholarship. The scholarships encourage new and returning villagers. Each session continues to attract villagers from near and far for a week that bonds friendships and greater appreciation of the language and culture.
COLLEGE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN FINNISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE College and university students may apply for scholarships at a 50% reduced rate for these 2017 Salolampi sessions: Spring Adult Week – May 21–27 Family Week – June 12–17 Fall Adult Week – September 11–17 Visit salolampi.org for application and registration info.

With the wonderful increase in attendance at Salolampi, raising the funds to continue the level of scholarship support is more important than ever before. The Scholarship Appeal Phonathon held last September raised over $31,000 which is a great start to funding our scholarships for this coming summer. We thank each and every one of our generous donors. We also thank the many organizations that participate in our Partner program. A big Kiitos goes out to Finlandia Foundation National for its wonderful support. We are reaching out to 1,500 people on our mailing list by “snail mail” to see if this is an effective way to increase our donors. We have lost a number of folks from that mailing list because we were not made aware that they moved. If you move, please let us know your new address so that we can continue to send the Sanomat to you.

With the wonderful increase in attendance at Salolampi, raising the funds to continue the level of scholarship support is more important than ever before. The Scholarship Appeal Phonathon held last September raised over $31,000 which is a great start to funding our scholarships for this coming summer. We thank each and every one of our generous donors. We also thank the many organizations that participate in our Partner program. A big Kiitos goes out to Finlandia Foundation National for its wonderful support. We are reaching out to 1,500 people on our mailing list by “snail mail” to see if this is an effective way to increase our donors. We have lost a number of folks from that mailing list because we were not made aware that they moved. If you move, please let us know your new address so that we can continue to send the Sanomat to you.

2017 Adult Week Registration Rates Reduced! The Concordia Language Villages has revised Adult Week registration rates for 2017. The original total rate of $925 has been reduced to $825 and the tuition for seniors (age 65+) and college students has been reduced from $850 to $750. The three Salolampi Foundation scholarships available to 2017 Salolampi Adult Week villagers will continue as reported in 2016. Those who register as a FIRST TIME villager will be eligible for a $50 discount. An EARLY discount of $50 is also available to all who register before April 1 for the May Adult session and to those who register before July 1 for the September Adult Week. An Adult Week villager traveling more than 500 miles is eligible for a $50 travel scholarship. The scholarships encourage new and returning villagers. Each session continues to attract villagers from near and far for a week that bonds friendships and greater appreciation of the language and culture.
COLLEGE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN FINNISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE College and university students may apply for scholarships at a 50% reduced rate for these 2017 Salolampi sessions: Spring Adult Week – May 21–27 Family Week – June 12–17 Fall Adult Week – September 11–17 Visit salolampi.org for application and registration info.

Salolampi in 2017 John Jussi Hanson Is New Salolampi Foundation President At the Salolampi Foundation board meeting on January 28, 2017, John Hanson succeeded Susan Harstad as President of Salolampi Foundation for a two-year term. John discovered Salolampi late in life and is glad he did. Since he retired, he has attended Adult Week, Family Week, the new Skinny Weekend, and work weekends. John has been a member of the Salolampi Foundation board, working on the Sanomat, scholarship and public relations/publicity committees, and serving as President Elect.
Highlights for Spring & Summer, 2017 NEW “Cultural Weekend” – March 25–26 Make Finnish foods and crafts with us while enjoying a retreat weekend at Salolampi! These new weekend programs (one in the Spring and one in the Fall) were created for everyone, but especially aimed at adults between ages 20–40 who, for various reasons, find it difficult to enroll in a full week of adult programming. This weekend also serves as a bridge for folks who have minimal Finnish language skills, but desire to experience the magic of Salolampi. Many Options for One-Week Sessions There are more One-Week Sessions than ever before. We are committed to making a child’s first Salolampi experience go smoothly! Students balance more summer activities than in the past, so more weeks of exploration help a child find time to attend.

One of John’s goals as president is to continue to use and explore multiple communication formats to stay in touch with villagers, potential villagers, donors, and others who support Salolampi. John also looks forward to expanding planned giving opportunities, especially taking advantage of tax-free direct contributions from IRA and retirement plans. All of John’s ancestors came from Finland—Kemi, Ii, Poulanka, Kangasniemi, and Mikkeli. John’s son and cousin also enjoy Salolampi—class time, activities, music, crafts, games, kyykkä, and special programs. “It goes without saying,” he concludes, “that the food goes down easily, especially the pulla and rye bread; and we never leave hungry. All of these make for grand experiences, but one tops them all— rantasauna (sauna by the lake). We will celebrate 40 years of Salolampi in 2018 and 100 years of Finland’s Independence this year. We are very grateful.”
Kesämökkipäivä (Summer Cabin Day) – Sunday, June 25, 2–8 PM Join us for a casual familyfriendly day of sauna, swimming, makkara (sausage), and tikkuleipä (bread dough) cooked on the campfire. Efforts are also underway to have a cultural guest presentation. The afternoon/evening event is FREE, so please join us! NEW Nordic Family Week – July 17–22 The Salolampi site will host the first mixed Family Week with Finnish, Swedish, and Norwegian participants. Salolampi, Sjölunden (Swedish Village), and Skogfjorden (Norwegian Village) will have staff members to interact with families of all kinds. This is a perfect way to plan a multi-generational family vacation while experiencing an ancestral or new language and culture. Villagers will be able to participate in a specific language track and participate in full group evening programs that highlight the commonalities between the Nordic nations.
Studies and Sociology and Anthropology and a minor in Spanish. For a semester in 2011, Helvi studied at the University of Tampere and for two years in the Education and Globalization Program at the University of Oulu, where she will soon receive her master’s degree. Helvi says she is grateful to the Salolampi community, which challenged her and encouraged her Finnish pursuits and opened the door to international experiences, interests, and friends. Helvi enjoys making Finnish food, crafting, studying languages, teaching the 0–3 year old group at Minnesotan Suomi-koulu, and serving as the Chief Sustenance Officer of the 612 Sauna Society. We are delighted to welcome Helvi, with her considerable skills, energy, and leadership, to the Salolampi Foundation Board.

The Year of Finland really began for me when I had the honor to represent Salolampi in Washington DC at the Finlandia Foundation National meeting in November 2016. This meeting brought all chapters together and provided a forum for sharing past successes, networking with new friends, and planning for robust and collective future. As a place of authentic Finnish language and cultural learning, we were happy to interact with Ambassador Kirsti Kauppi, the Finnish Embassy staff, FFN board members and all the FF members participating. We truly believe Salolampi offers the most authentic experience to begin and to continue Finnish language and cultural acquisition before travel to Finland. Finland 100 Theme: Yhdessä/Together Salolampi will be present and visible in many ways during 2017. We will be out and about networking and marketing our unique language immersion method, partnering with groups such as Finlandia Foundation National and local Finnish-American groups. We were honored to have a presence at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis in mid-January when Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra performed an all-Finnish program in conjunction with Ambassador Kauppi’s first visit to Minnesota, which ultimately kicked off the American celebration of Finland 100. Salolampi/ CLV is now proudly included on the Finland 100 traveling sauna as one of its official sponsors,

During fall Adult Week 2016, Salolampi hosted nineteen participants from ten different states and provinces. We enjoyed wonderful meals, singing classic and contemporary songs, folk dancing to live music, relaxing in the sauna, and creating hilarious skits. The evenings offered programs such as simulating a popular Finnish game show called BumtsiBum!, engaging with contemporary Finnish films, and not taking ourselves too seriously during wacky Olympics. Salolampi Adult Weeks are the perfect time to join a community of people who are keenly interested in Finnish language and culture. Whether you have grown up speaking Finnish or have sought out opportunities to dive into Finnish language and culture only recently, we welcome you to experience the enrichment, inspiration, and all-around fun that encompass Adult Weeks at Salolampi! Reflections of Appreciation, Celebration, & Friendship by Susan Susanna Harstad, V Salolampi Foundation Past President and former Leader of the Adult Program
As Salolampi Foundation President (2015–2016), I learned how much time, effort, and organization it takes for volunteer groups like ours to run smoothly Susan Susanna and harmoniously. Harstad I greatly appreciate Larry Lauri Saukko’s past leadership, Amy Iida Tervola Hultberg’s current leadership as Dean and Elizabeth Helvi Brauer’s future leadership of Salolampi’s programs that have been designed for all ages. This appreciation extends to all counseling and teaching staff who create the unforgettable language and cultural immersion magic for which Salolampi is known. As Salolampi is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2018 and the Salolampi Foundation board’s 40th anniversary in 2019, it’s a great time to reflect. How many thousands of lives have been enriched by a connection to Salolampi, perhaps traveling to Finland and confidently communicating in Finnish? My life has been enriched with many lifelong friendships made at Salolampi. I encourage you all to connect to Salolampi this year and in the years to come by attending programs with your family and friends. Happy Finland 100, everyone. See you at Salolampi!
