Transformation occurs all around us, and the Salolampi Foundation needs to keep up with the pace of change. We are developing new strategies to engage communication and develop a balance of contemporary and traditional ways of communication. During this transition, we are searching out reasonable efforts to reduce the cost of publishing, printing, and distributing the Sanomat. The Sanomat Editorial Committee suggests: • Converting more readers to electronic and emailed Sanomats. We ask readers to opt out of the paper Sanomat and request an email version by providing an email address. (See the enclosed envelope for an opt-out message.) • In the future, we encourage parents, villagers, scholarship recipients, and new friends to request electronic or email versions of the Sanomat. We ask readers to assist us as we make this transition. Paljon kiitoksia!

Of the 15 Concordia Language Villages, Salolampi is the only village that has an organized, active foundation composed of 20 loyal volunteers who meet three times per year. Various committees help to determine the direction and future of Salolampi. If you are interested in serving on the Board of Directors, please contact us.

Salolampi youth and family enrollment continues to remain strong, and creatively housing all participants and staff is an opportunity each week. We are so grateful for the resources everyone gives to introduce a young person to find their courageous global self through Salolampi—it will indeed strengthen our collective world. Through many university and network connections, we also continue to attract credible and high-quality staff from Finland and the U.S. This year, about half of our staff came from Europe and the other half from the U.S. We will be working to make these relationships even more productive with business trips to Finland and intentional meetings with stakeholders. Lastly, through dedicated efforts, we secured a high-level media visit from the Helsingin Sanomat this summer at Salolampi. This substantial news piece debuted in print and online at the end of July, and is easily searchable on the internet. We now look forward to fall, winter, and spring retreat weekends, Family Weekend, and Spring Adult Week. You can reference an abundance of information regarding these opportunities via salolampi.org and concordialanguagevillages.org.

Another busy summer at Salolampi is in the books with much more expected throughout the remainder of the year for all ages and interests. The Salolampi Foundation continues to look into new ways to support Salolampi and engage with the Finnish community. As Salolampi continues to grow, the Salolampi Foundation must match the growth. One integral way this is possible is by you, the supporters who generously give, advocate, participate, and volunteer. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank you. Salolampi wouldn’t be what it is without your support.

Fall Adult Week at Salolampi this past September was one of the best adult weeks ever, according to more than one attendee. The group was smaller than usual, but because of that, everyone had plenty of opportunities to get to know each other and to feel comfortable speaking Finnish around each other. Paljon hyvää Suomea puhuttiin! Our teachers were Joona Sundstrom and Tiina Watts. Cultural presentations/demonstrations were given by Greg Oja on wood carving (half of the group carved a beautiful bread board); John Hanson on the history of Salolampi and Richard Castro on Finnish linguistics; and the Finn Hall trio (Ralph and Jaana Tuttila with Dennis Halme) spent three music-filled days with us, teaching dances and playing Finnish folk music. Join us for more great Finnish instruction and culture on May 16–22, 2020, with teachers Sirpa Tuomainen, Keely Watts, and Tiina Watts!
