Results BUCS Points 191 84th position in BUCS Table. 3/12/14’
Mens Basketball 1st team has had a fantastic start to the new semester, winning 6 out of 6 matches against stiff competition such as University of Manchester, Teeside and Newcastle while sitting confortable top of the table of the Northern 1A. The winning streak continues, with there next game on Wednesday 3rd away at Newcastle University. Women’s Basketball are also on an impresive winning streak top of the Notherrn 3A, with a three point lead on Chester University. There next game is on Wednesday 3rd at Keele University. Mens Football 1st team are currently joint 2nd with MMU in the Northern 4c league with like for like playing 4 winning 2 drawing 1, and losing 1, hopefully they can get clear on Manchester on Wednesday 3rd December after playing Edge Hill University at home.
Mens Futsal 1st team are currently sitting 2nd in the Northern 1A league table, with winning 2, losing 1. The mens 1st will played there last match of the semester on Sunday 30th of November against Loughborough University ended in a 5-3 defeat. Women’s Hockey 1st Team is for the moment top of the Northern 4A league, with a 3 point lead on Cumbria 1st team. On the 19th November, Salfords 1st smashed University of Manchesters 4th 6-0. The next game will be againt Cumbria Universities 1st team, on Wednesday 3rd December away. Men’s Hockey 1st Team are joint first with Manchester University 3rd team with 12 points, despite a massive goal difference. Expect a tense atmosphere on Wednesday 3rd December as both teams meet at home (Castle Irwell for a faceoff. the winner will be top of the league.
Rugby League men’s 1st team are only 1 point behind UCLAN playing 2 winning 2. The last match on Wednesday 26th November, was an automatic win as MMU 2nd team could not field a team, in previous matches the Salford boys have smashed competition, with MMU away finishing 24-48 (22/10/14) and dominating Lancaster 54-10. It looks like those radios are paying off.

FUTSAL CLUB Futsal Club are currently the leading team for BUCS points. Both Men’s teams play in the Northern 1A league with the 1st giving themselves an outside chance of promotion, and the 2nd team have firm belief that they can avoid the dreaded relegation. The 1st team have won 2 out of their 3 games played so far, a 7-2 victory of York 2nd team & 7-3 in the highly anticipated Salford vs Salford match. Their only lost so far was in the derby game against Manchester, which they narrowly lost 6-4. They could not have asked for a harder cup fixture this Sunday away to the runners up of the BUCS Trophy Loughborough; however team captain David Jenkins, firmly believes his team can come out victorious! The 2nd team have lost all 3 of their opening games, but with a superior goal difference over York 2nd team, they are currently out of the relegation zone. They also have a chance of getting a cup run going with a game against their relegation rivals (York) this Sunday at home.
SALFORD SIRENS CHEERLEADING Salford Sirens have had a great start to the semester, hosting many fundraising events from bake sales to a casino night. The Students’ Union invested in Salford Sirens with a new air track which will allow the sirens to train more effectivly and possibly try new stunts for there upcoming competitions. The Salford Sirens will be attending Saturday Night Fever FC at the Birmingham LG Arean on the 15th of February ‘15, the same event last year saw Universities such as Oxford take on Cambridge, BNU(Buckinghamshire) vs Roehampton, UCLU University College London vs Kings college. The LG arena has a capaciaty of 9500, and is the fastest growing regional event. I’m sure this isnt the last we will hear from the Sirens
Rowing (SUBC) Salford University Boat Club will be celebrating its 50th anniversary, keeping traditions alive since its formation in 1965 In the past month Salford University Boat Club competed at two races in Chester and Lancaster. Chester was the first race the new fresher’s took part in and all crews had an amazing time. The senior squad also put on an impressive show for the first race in the year with the senior 4+s coming in second for the women and third for the men. On Saturday 15th November the club went to Lancaster for an invitational race hosted by Lancaster University BC. Chester, Lancaster and Salford were the universities involved. SUBC didn’t just win one race, they won all the races. There were some impressive results with our senior men’s 8+ beating Lancaster’s 1st 8+ on home water. The fresher crews (women and men’s) flew away from their opposition, making them the fastest fresher boats of the day. The senior women’s 4+ also put on a great show as the crew was a mixture of fresher’s and seniors. SUBC were the overall winners of the day. The next race for the Club is in York for the white rose head race, this race which was started by York University Boat club, has had an incredible increase in the number of universities from all round the north and north-west region. This race generally looks at the winter training from all groups, and can be regarded as a prelude to the two cities boat race which will take place in 2015.
Give Sport A Go, is funded by Sport England, with partners including Campus Living Villages, University of Salford Students’ Union, Salford Community Leisure. The project was set up 3 years ago to increase partipation in sport, without being tied down. Give Sport A Go hosted a UV Raveminton in welcome week which as can be guessed is UV Badminton. This was hugly successful, and will be something we will offer in the future, maybe UV Table Tennis, UV Rollerskating. The project also offeres leagues, which include 5-a side Football, Squash ladder, Futsal, Basketball, and 7-a side Football. MyCycle is a project made to get students cycling on campus, it is ran through the students’ Union as not for profit, as the money is reinvested into the scheme. There are a variety of bike to choose from including Mountain bikes, or Hybrid, male and female bikes. a 4 weeks hire will cost £26.00 for a Mountain bike, or £28.00 for a Hybrid. Mycycle is located at Horlock Court near the Students’ Union shop, an is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 11am-2pm (Term Time)

LAW SOCIETY This month the Law Society went to the supreme court in London, there then students observed a case while visiting leagal landmarks. As with all groups all trips are orgasnied by the students for the students, which has benifits of supplemnting there education, while building the interest and potentially networking on work related placements.
Engineering Union (SUEU) The Engineering Union society are a busy bunch, regularly hosting guest speaker including network rail and concord. The group regulary goes on industrial trips in order to supplement their education and general intrest. An upcoming event for SUEU is hosting a guest speaker from Bombardiers Transport Department, from a recent Salford graduate to talk about London tomorrow’s Tube. Engineering have recently been tasked by Heaton Park, to design and help build a replica Bank Tank, which is a from a design of a 1917 of the Mark IV British Tank. This task will allow SUEU to engage in the community outreach in teaching local people from all ages about the First World War as in the same month we remembered the centary of the Great War.
Islamic Society ISOC The Islamic Society have kickstarted the semester by celebrating Eid Mubarak on 4th October. the group with support from the University Chaplain Imam Rashid Musa, hosted a free food event outside Clifford Whitworth Library with special guest Vice-Chancellor Martin Hall. ISOC have been fund raising over this semester and raised £1,355.08 for orphans and needy children as part of The Great North, Isoc also hosted charity week 2014 which overall raised a staggering £62,2283.65
