STYLE FILE (NOVEMBER 2021) – Tommy Hilfiger, and the global outdoor work inspired brand Timberland, announce the second drop of this Fall / 2021 – The TommyXTimberlandcollection which was launched at the Tommy Hilfiger outlet in Valletta in mid-November. The Drop follows the success of Drop 1 launched in October, which saw pieces such as the menswear black hoodie and the womenswear yellow sweater dress sell out within 24 hours worldwide. While Drop 1 of the TommyXTimberland collaboration celebrated the brand’s heritages and shared cultural influences, Drop 2 looks ahead to reshape the future by featuring more sustainable pieces that focus on pushing the boundaries of eco-innovation. This collection reinforces both brand’s deep commitment to building stronger communities and reducing the environmental footprint of the products by rethinking the production processes and sourcing more responsible, long-lasting materials. The capsule focuses on five bold ecoinnovations, which both the TOMMY HILFIGER and Timberland teams plan to scale in future seasons:

STYLE FILE to push the boundaries of our iconic archival pieces by intensifying our focus on eco-innovation,” said Christopher Raeburn, Global Creative Director of Timberland. “This is a big step in our journey to drive innovation and progress in pursuit of a more green and equitable future – one where we strive to not only do less harm, but have a positive impact on nature. We hope to inspire the industry as a whole to work together and move the world forward.” The campaign for Drop 2 stars the team at creative agency ONLUNCHBREAK, a New York City collective founded by Director Thuan Tran that aims to bring young talented minds together and change the culture of film making and advertising. Shot by local photographer Tyler Kohlhoff (@ tylerkohlhoff) as well as videographer and digital disruptor Malt Disney (@MaltDisney), the visuals come together to bring to life the collection story of a bold and reimagined future.

Eliminating Waste: The puffer jackets feature filling made from liability fabrics (surplus fabrics given a second chance) blended with at least 65% EcoLoft™, a bio-based and recycled down-like synthetic fiberfill visible through the translucent material. How would you define beat boxing exactly?

Can you give us your background in a snapshot?

Beatboxing is the most personal instrument in the world. It is the one that you always have on you, right from your very first cry. Yet, it is also a foundation of exploration, finding what is possible and collectively reaching beyond.

In a nutshell: Son of my wonderful parents Tadeusz and Ewa, of which both have an excellent taste in music and love to sing, but unfortunately, neither received a musical education. Friend of Czarek, who in 2006 showed me MTV Barrio 19 DVD with Faith SFXs beatboxing lessons which got me started. Apprentice of masters- Blady Kris (who in 2009 revolutionised the scene and brought me to my new family) and Hu-

bert Jahdek Pyrgies (who is the person I look up to the most and am also honoured to recently be working with). A coworker of many beautiful people, from sound technicians, actors, screenwriters, singers, choir conductors, priests, DJs, dancers, and all others. A member of the Polish and global beatboxing family. Composer. Organiser. And finally, a master of the Polish Beatbox Battle loop station category of 2018 and 2019 and a happy human who can live his dream and spread what he received. >>

What kind of person would you describe yourself? Oh, I don’t like to describe myself. Come and meet me! How did you get into beatboxing? How old were you when you started? I was born in 1992 in Gdansk, so that would make me 14 years old in 2006. From all the recordings of street arts found on MTV Barrio 19, beatboxing seemed like the obvious choice. I guess everyone dreams of becoming a superhero with a hidden superpower. I found mine in beatboxing. At first, I learned just a few basic sounds, and after three years and a few workshops, I was ready for my first concert. It was terrible. So what was it like just going out on your own? I always wanted to do it, so the choice was straightforward, but the way was not so. I 042

have no musical education whatsoever, and I’m constantly struggling to overcome my lack of talent. I was lucky enough to meet a lot of wonderful people who helped me and have put a lot of work into making it happen. I worked on significantly reshaping myself in 2016 to become the Jan Elf I am now.

met me because of winning championships or just appearing in many places throughout all those years living and creating in Gdansk. I live in a fantastic city.

What steps did you take to build your career?

Whenever I’m playing music, whether it’s on the street, championships in Berlin, a Philharmonic hall, a tiny pub in the south of Poland or just a party with my friends, I think that I “made it”. Of course, I have a couple of goals that I intend to achieve and ones I already have, but I’m pleased with what I have every day. It’s not really my train of thought, so I’ll give you one achievement here- the premiere of my first theatre show with my music. My dad was so happy. Oh, and the one time I jammed with Jacob Collier. And the whole trip across the Balkans with the Immortal Onion band. Okay, that’s enough.

Until 2016 I don’t think I was very conscious as an artist. In 2012 I was playing with choirs and with my friends, who were the sons of a great jazz double bass player. Our band was called The Long Road, and I feel like I’ve learnt a lot playing collectively with them, but I was just a mode in the machine. In 2016 after receiving a loop station, I decided to become who i always wanted to be – an independent artist. I have spent endless hours in Red Roof Studio, and I was busking a lot. I then got into social media. I released a few recordings and began to perform on my own. But most of those who know me

Was there a moment while performing when you felt like you really “made it”?

What are some of the ways you keep your voice and throat healthy?

PEOPLE

Not beatboxing. Haha, it is pretty ironic because singing requires you to relax your voice, while beatbox sounds are really tight and come with stress. It isn’t easy to combine it healthily. Every voice is different. Listen to yourself. If it says that it’s enough, it’s enough. Try to strike a deal with it and get it back to working shape. I try to keep it fresh, moistened—Honey, ginger, sage. The voice loves it. How important is social media to a beatboxer? It all depends on what you are aiming for. Nowadays, if you want to get big, social media platforms are essential, and you can achieve great things there- look at Dharni. I feel like I’m somewhat old school in that regard, and I try to keep in touch with those who care about me and let them know what I’m up to. Will I create more content in the future? Follow me and find out!

end, is your own work. That’s what my song “Purpose” is about.

Public opinion can be really harsh. I’m lucky enough to have incredible people around me. But there is also such a thing as an opposing fanbase. The people that care about you because they just don’t want you to succeed. Ironically any action taken is helping. Recently Youtube changed the system of content evaluation to only likes. I don’t think that’s the right way. Negative voices are also vital. As a representative of Poland at international championships, like The Looping Masters in Berlin, the pressure was on me to perform. I gave my best, I had a lot of fun, and so did people in the audience, but I was not ready to compete with the world’s highest level attendees. People noticed that and gave feedback. I appreciate that they are pushing me to be better. Sometimes opinions might be valuable. Sometimes people don’t know what they are talking about. You can choose whether to take them into consideration or not. What matters, in the

What advice can you give to a young beatboxer who would like to have a career in beatboxing? Get out there and meet the world. It is waiting for you! But also remember to plan your actions in the right way, and put enough work into making it happen. I believe in you! What’s one thing that you know now that you wish you knew early on? The sea level is being measured by a station on the Eastern coast of Spain. Oh, no, nothing in particular. I have no regrets, and I’m enjoying my journey just the way it is. As a master of creating a state of mind in his art, Ron has recently expanded his field of work into interior design and architecture, presenting a unique handprint drawn from his ability to capture aesthetics in the eyes of the observer. His recent architectural projects’ selection includes his current Old Jaffa residence- an airy open plan loft that blends industrial details with warm wood accents and plenty of natural light. There’s also the impressive country house in the artist village of Ein Hod. The house was designed with clean contemporary lines mixed with Moroccan inspiration, entirely surrounded by nature. And that’s not forgetting a new Tel Aviv penthouse on the top of a renovated building from 1918, made with a unique choice of raw materials, using the natural light penetrating the space through high windows as another layer in his design. RON KEDMI

Where did your creative journey begin? I have always been creative. Though, after four years of studying art, specialising in painting at the Academie école des Beaux Art in Paris, I realised that I was spending a hell of a lot of time on one figurative painting. As I had the passion for creating and directing my vision, style, and story in life, I decided it would be much more powerful and instantaneous to follow another direction. So, I chose cinema and still photography as the media to express myself. I then did another three years studying at the cinema academy in Tel Aviv. When do you know the right moment to capture a snap? I believe the right moment to click is when I feel that that moment alone tells a narrative with a really strong emotion that emerges from the subject. So I carefully select the subjects I am shooting, through being in movement, aware and conscious of myself, dreams, and fantasies. It should happen from first sight and moment. It should always trigger a strong emotion in me.

of my most outstanding achievements to date. It was the first time that as a fashion photographer I landed a solo exhibition at the Modern art museum, showcasing photographs and artworks inspired by fashion. My images scaled from a print medium for editorials to large prints. Do you intend to create an impact emotionally with your work? Yes, I believe it’s all about that. Particularly with photography. A good photograph should raise emotions. Emotions create discussions that create further awareness and consciousness of the subject. Changes start when a few people or more become aware and are not afraid to make changes. What and who are your key inspirations? Cinematography and films have always been significant influences on my works. Directors inspired me, such as the likes of Jean Luc Besson and David Lynch. And of

course, as a young fashion photographer, I admired the works of Helmut Newton. What advice would you give to anyone following a creative pathway? The best advice I got was to ask myself what I love the most, what my true passion is, to be present with whatever I was working on, and create and work only from that place. In that “zone”, let’s say you will find your unique personal style. This is crucial, even more so these days when we are flooded with thousands of images the moment we open our eyes. [ V ]

[ ...“EMOTIONS CREATE DISCUSSIONS THAT CREATE FURTHER AWARENESS AND CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE SUBJECT”.... ]

Which place inspires you most with your creative work? I love Africa. It’s the place where nature and the people touched me the most from all my travels around the globe. The simplicity, connection to the environment, and mainly the people’s energy and vibrations of joy How did you adapt to the pandemic scenario? I must say I had a ‘strange’ but precious time with myself at my studio. I did enlarge my artistic field over to digital artworks. I created a new series of works exhibited at my gallery in Tel Aviv and the Six-Senses, Ibiza. I was working at the time of the quarantine on the interior design project, “Beauty-full”.It’s an incredible penthouse at the heart of Tel Aviv. A renewed building from 1918. What have been your biggest career highlights to date? I believe that my solo exhibition at the museum for modern art in Tel Aviv was one

INTERVIEW

Francisco de Pajaro, better known by his pseudonym ‘Art Is Trash’, is a street and world-renowned urban contemporary artist based in Barcelona and remains exceptionally active in vibrant cities such as London and New York. He’s made an incredible career out of turning trash into colourful, humoristic creations of art, establishing a natural, direct and open approach to conveying his messages throughout the world. In the beginning, “El Arte Es Basura” was just an emotional channel, Pajaro’s war scream as an artist was rejected by numerous galleries. But today, it has grown to be much more than that, as Art is Trash became a hypnotic hand that resuscitates the cadavers of hyper-consumerism. Unknowingly he’s created an entire movement. In a rare interview, Vamp caught up with the fascinating street artist to find out more.

INTERVIEW

Hi Francisco, when did your artistic journey begin? I started my artist journey at a very young age, back in primary school to be exact. I vividly remember drawing what I saw on television, notably Western movies; I was fascinated with battles of Indians and cowboys. From the Crusades in the Middle Ages and the second world war to motor racing. These were the themes that amused me the most. As a teenager, I stopped studying and drawing and went back to painting. In 1990, I can say I started taking it seriously, I was twenty. From this year on, I attempted to study Fine Arts academically, but I couldn’t pull myself to study for years through such an art form. Instead, I started working with a friend in my hometown, and together we built a signwriting company that was into making posters, decorative painting, typography and murals. It was called Roulette. I

learned many techniques that would help me paint years later in the trash side of things that my work has become synonymous with. So, without knowing it, I was already training. But before I managed to make a living from art and, thanks to the objects abandoned on the street, I had to work very hard in the labour system. Unfortunately, My life changed after the death of a close friend in a traffic accident. I left my family home to live in London. I did not adapt there easily, so I packed up again and went to live in Barcelona. There, I spent many years trying to get my work in an art gallery, but none of them paid attention to my previous work. Everything had changed from 2009, when the crisis of 2008 shook Spain to its core. At this point I began to express myself without caring what would happen and where my pieces would end up. I also didn’t know where using trash would take me! I was working in a bar at night and painting trash for almost four years.

Until one day I decided to venture back to London again. In London, no one painted the street trash and following there, I went to New York, no one painted the trash there either. It was there I realised that I had created a trend in the Street Art scene, and I managed to publish a book to immortalize it- Well, this is the abridged story! What inspires you? My own life inspires me, what I experienced as a child, and what I continue to experience throughout this life journey. And also obviously what happens around me. In the street, I am very political, and in my private life, not so much. My brain is always ready to create anything I interpret in my own way. If it can be with criticism and provocation, much better. It inspires me to go against everything. Against what most people do not want to see or hear. >>

INTERVIEW How would you describe your style? I have honestly never thought about it. I guess I’m not the one to label what I do. I try to be eclectic and not fall into the formula to paint just for money. All I want is not to fall into creative boredom. I must say, it’s going well. What does your creative process look like?

What I do first is read, in my opinion, the lies of many twisted newspaper headlines. And then I automatically go straight to the online forums. Which is usually, I feel, “the great dung heap of society”. Here you can read everythiny, shiny superficial things or trashy things galore. Here one can find the reality of what many people think, and it will not go public anywhere else. Next, I give my opinion based on what a large majority of citizens

say. For this reason, I receive a lot of criticism from my audience. But this, for me, is positive. Because depending on how a follower answers me, I’m inspired to answer by painting something more striking and provocative. What keeps driving you forward in your artistic journey? Do not fall into the trap of the daily hum-

about the situation and representing the virus in my way. I did an extensive series. Although with the issue of Covid-19 itself, I feel just the same as the first day. Very confused.

How have you managed during COVID?

Do you have a favourite piece?

INTERVIEW without thinking too much. Inspiration comes when you least expect it, but you always have to be working and focused. It is like a pleasant orgasm. It is not achieved with just anyone and not with oneself. What has been your proudest career highlight to date? I would say, the decision, the courage, the generosity and the impetus to paint trash for five years without rest, knowing that no one would listen to me and that it would have no economic value to do so and knowing that I could die in a garbage truck. I have not found a place with more freedom and purity than to paint on an abandoned object. For this reason, twelve years later, I continue to do so. What do you love most about your profession? The privilege of living from my art and not having to do it working as a slave to the labour system. I am always mentally prepared in case I have to return to their sewers to grow back. What does 2022 have in store? I want to do something I have never done, and now my instincts are pushing me to do it. That’s exploding my iconic horse concept and the little characters and bringing them to different media. I will also publish a second picture book. However, this will be more powerful because this time, it is my autobiography. There are many adventures and anecdotes in different countries that the viewer will not be bored with since here they will understand who Francisco de Pájaro is and how I arrived and triumphed in the trash. And finally, in October of next year, I will do a solo exhibition in a new art gallery that I am working on, Canal Gallery in Barcelona.

SAM SELBY

INSIDE THE MIND OF SAM SELBY What’s it like to be a psychic? Vamp magazine set on a mission to find out. Find all your pressing questions answered here. Sam Selby is an International Psychic Medium, Crystal Reiki Master and Designer. She settled on the Maltese islands in 2013 and became a wife and mummy of two boys. Sam has been a psychic medium for over 20 years and works from Tigne Holistic Centre in Sliema and online internationally.

my spare time, I met very well respected gurus, healers and teachers. It was here that I learnt all about healing, working with crystals, and many different religions and understandings of the spirit world. Where does your work take you, and who do you work with?

Shortly after this period, I decided that it was now time to focus on my journey alone. During the lockdowns, I provided online readings to many worldwide to help them through difficult times. My work had exploded onto an international level, and there just weren’t enough hours in the day to sustain the group. I had grown out of it.

When did you first realise you have psychic gifts? And when did you first know that being a psychic medium was your calling? How did it come about? My first mediumship was at the age of 9 when I found myself gathering flowers for my grandparents that had passed away before I was born. I remember it like it was yesterday, but I only realised I was connecting when I learnt later in life, just exactly what my gifts were. Regarding psychic ability (the knowledge of the future), this was also woven across my lifetime. Apart from the many ‘I knew that would happen’ moments, there were clear pivotal moments when I came to understand how gifted I was. I was gifted my deck of Lenormand Cards when I was 15. I grew up in London, with my parents both working in the medical and engineering industry. At that time, I never thought that they would understand. I kept my spiritual side very secretive; I was not very sure how people would react. It all felt a bit taboo. I travelled the world for a few years, taking my cards with me and doing readings for those that requested clarity along my way. The feedback I received from those I read for was heart-warming and helped me to grow my confidence. I spent time working for El Shaddi charitable trust in Goa. It’s a charity providing an orphanage for both orphans and street children, and I looked after 57 children between the age of 2 and 5. I taught art and design in the connected school, And eventually, we opened a small shop where the children could sell their creative works. The proceeds then go back to their care. In

I read for several years within the Facebook group; in fact, I went on to admin the entire group with three other healers around the world. We mentored other psychic mediums to take hold of their gifts, guided those in need, and helped many overcome the challenges. Earlier in the year, we reached 100,000 followers, which was an incredibly proud moment.

Here in Malta, I work from Tigne Holistic Centre in Sliema. We have a beautiful space and a fantastic team of holistic practitioners. I have recently been invited to do a tour of the UK and America, which I intend to do once things calm down. What are your psychic abilities?

Five years ago joined a Facebook group that provided readings to those in need. I enquired what was needed to take part in their approval’s test. Another nudge from my now-husband, Saying what have I got to lose. So I gave it a go. I had 12 hours to provide readings with six photos of total strangers without using my cards. I was overwhelmed, thinking how can I possibly do this without my cards. Then again, what did I have to lose? I had to get over 85% to pass. Those 12 hours changed everything. The pressure was on as I had to rely on purely my intuition and nothing more. The results started coming in when we sat on the sofa home. Our jaws dropped. I got 85% 95% 95% 100% 100% 95%. This was a pivotal moment. I didn’t need my cards. I had my intuition.

1. Claircognition - simply knowing something to be true. 2. Clairvoyance - the ability to see things, Both in mind and through symbols. It’s what comes to mind. 3. Clairaudience - the ability to hear, both in mediumship when connecting to a spirit or through intuition when reading someone’s future. 4. Clairsentience- feeling something on a physical level and finally, 5. Mediumship- which is the ability to connect to someone in spirit through the above clairs. What do you love about your work? Before I embraced my gifts, I always succeeded In what I was doing and reached the top. However, it didn’t give me the sense of achievement that I had hoped. It’s only now that I feel a deep love for my work from the vast appreciation that I received through my holistic work. There is nothing more rewarding than helping somebody struggling and seeing them shining bright, having found their happiness again. >>

What is the most popular type of reading that customers are looking for? What are the most common concerns that interest them? The most popular kind of psychic reading is always love. People are looking for clarity on overcoming obstacles, knowing when to walk away from something that no longer serves, finding self-love again, and focusing their energy on overcoming barriers within their relationships. And where to focus on finding their soulmate. I cover many other topics from career to a spiritual path, but love is more than always at the forefront of someone’s priorities. After all, we are taught that we must find love and settle for our happiness ever after from such a young age. I offer mediumships for those that are mourning. Looking for answers to questions they didn’t get to ask, Making sure that their loved ones are in spirit or at peace. It’s a hugely healing experience for anyone that has gone through grief. Sadly so many at the moment are having to deal with grief in heart breaking circumstances. At least, I have been able to help those left behind. I’m also a Crystal Reiki Master. Reiki itself is an ancient Japanese technique used to cleanse and rebalance one’s energy. I combine crystal healing, Reiki and sound therapy within each session. Have you ever refused to read for someone? I have. I don’t read for anyone without their permission. Readings must be for that person and that person inquiring only. I don’t read any pregnancy readings, as this can be very destructive In some regions of the world. Readings are also only for those over the age of 18. What’s more, if I receive an inquiry from someone I feel has ill intent towards another, I will kindly decline. What is the most crucial detail in maintaining a relationship of mutual trust with customers? Providing a safe space that is confidential. My readings are always constructive, providing strategy and guidance on how to overcome any obstacles and where to focus ones energy.

I do not use tarot as I personally find these can be very blunt and harsh at times. Instead, my Lenormand readings are looking into the past (sets the tone), present (current situation), and future (if you continue on this path).

I have come in contact with many critics in my time. I used to say, “All I need is five minutes of your time to convince you otherwise”. However, I’ve come to accept that those that need me, find me. So, I don’t need to prove anything to anyone.

What’s the most powerful message you’ve ever received through your psychic ability?

To be honest, there have been times I have tried to understand how and why I have these gifts. I have participated in studies of my brain activity during readings and mediumships to understand exactly how and why. The findings were that my brain goes into a deeply meditative state. Still, I can’t answer that question, but what I can do is accept it and use it for the greater good of others.

When I moved to Malta several years back, I met Darko (my husband). We started a relationship, and soon, we were living together. At the time, I was working in the finance industry. I had had a nasty cold and could not drive to pick up my (then) boyfriend friends from the airport. We arranged for a friend to drive my car to pick them up. I was resting but suddenly woke with a very clear image and impulse to message Darko. I wrote ‘if you’re in the middle backseat of the car, please move to the side and put your seatbelt on. Would you mind telling V to slow down in the rain, as I am worried that the car will skid and there will be a car accident? He read my message, moved to the side seat, put his seatbelt on. Within a matter of seconds, an accident had taken place. He came home and told me that I had saved his life. His encouragement and faith in me resulted in me handing in my resignation to follow my purpose in life. Together we have had a few instances that have blown our minds. I am very dyslexic, and I’ve always struggled with foreign languages. Once when we were visiting my husband’s family in Macedonia. We were supposed to be staying in his grandmother’s house, who had passed away the previous year. She came through straight away, but I couldn’t understand the language, so everything was in symbols. I communicated this with Darko, and it all made sense. However, I have found it overwhelming to be staying there as she was highly excited about our presence. We went and sat in the field so that I could ground myself. Darko noticed that I started to move my finger around as if I was writing something on my leg. It’s only when he paid closer attention that he saw I was writing in Macedonian. (An entirely foreign language with an unfamiliar alphabet to me) But there I had written in perfect Macedonian “Don’t worry, everything’s going to be OK”. What do you say to those that instantly dismiss your psychic abilities?

From making jewellery, Reiki to psychic readings and mediumship, what’s your favourite area and why? I spent many years making jewellery, both high-end fashion and crystal jewellery made with metaphysical energies. I participated in Malta Fashion Week and multiple markets around the island. I do love this work, but it isn’t what fulfils me. So slowly, I’m moving away from this as there isn’t time to do everything. Therefore It has to be my readings and mediumships- I’m providing a service that few can. It can change someone’s life for the better, help them overcome their obstacles and aid in their healing process. It’s so rewarding. What for you has been your biggest career highlight to date? I had a couple fly all the way from Canada to Malta to come for a reading with me in person. I remember feeling so flattered. Since then, many well respected and talented spiritual mediums have reached out to me asking to collaborate. Do you have a special message for our readers in these difficult times? In 100 years from now, we will all be a name on a family tree. This is your time to choose what you want, who you want in your life, and what you want to do with it. It is yours.. so select for you, not for anyone or everyone else. Happiness is an inside job. Do what makes you happy, and shine bright. Life is far too short not to be anything but authentic. If you feel you need some guidance, then please reach out. You are not alone and never alone. [ V ] You can contact Sam at www.sam-selby.com
