The Fall 2023 collection provides a modern vision of style for the great outdoors. Inspired in equal parts by woodsy New England escapes and Tommy Hilfiger’s ‘90s looks, the collection takes a contemporary look at heritage styles and archival silhouettes. 016

FALL_’23 ISSUE

Outerwear takes center stage, with the New York puffer jacket in a variety of materials and patterns, rich leather and shearling jackets, and modern updates of the peacoat. Tommy signatures such as the Tommy tartan, the global stripe and the TH Monogram are found throughout, in expanded sizes and set against the season’s standout color, cerulean blue.

Fabric innovations and texture plays abound, from touchable brushed wool and alpaca blended knits to denim, reimagined with velvet flocking or a needle punch effect. In essence, iconic preppy styles are shaken up and revived for today’s audience. Recreation and re-creation in contemporary key.

TOMMY TARTAN SEPTEMBER STORY. Worn by Paloma Elsesser with her family and friends. A tribute to Tommy Hilfiger’s continued history in classic tartan. Tommy Tartan was created in 2000, featuring the brand’s iconic red, white and blue colors, and listed in the official Scottish Register of Tartans. Fall 2023 features two remixes of Tommy Tartan, both based on the original colors and layout but with contemporary updates in red and cerulean blue. The tartan pattern features across tactile brushed back textures on silhouettes including varsity bombers, puffers, shirts, caps and scarves. PUFFERS OCTOBER STORY. Worn by Paloma Elsesser with her family and friend and Steve and Devon Aoki with their family. An iconic staple of the outerwear offering since the 80s, Tommy Hilfiger puffers are designed with equal parts functionality and style. This season, the New York puffer is introduced as a contemporary perspective on the original puffers of the 90s, which

captured the attention of youth cultures of the decade with their bold, bright colors, oversized looks and playful prep. Available in multiple colorways and styles with a name recalling the birthplace of Tommy Hilfiger, the New York puffer is as at home in the city streets as the American outdoors. Reflecting Tommy Hilfiger’s vision for a future that Wastes Nothing and Welcomes All, the outer is made from 100% recycled polyamide with a Thermolite® filling, a premium recycled insulation made from a minimum of 85% textile waste and used plastic bottles. The New York monogram puffer offers a playful exploration of the iconic Tommy monogram in a fresh colorway of desert sky. For a splash of seasonal color, the New York check puffer is a modern take on Tommy Tartan with an outer made from 59% organic cotton.

n the art world, there are creators who shape the medium, and then there are those who transcend it entirely. Fabio Viale belongs to the latter category. Step into his mesmerising world, and you’ll be amazed by the ethereal beauty and painstaking craftsmanship that only a master marble artist can achieve. In a realm where stone breathes life and statues come to dance, Viale has rewritten the rules, pushing the boundaries of possibility. Prepare to embark on a journey through his extraordinary universe, where cold, unyielding marble becomes a canvas for the sublime, and the sculptor himself stands as an enigma in a new chapter of art history. Here’s what went down when Vamp Magazine caught up with Fabio Viale: >>

FALL_‘23 ISSUE

PEOPLE

Can you describe your journey as a marble sculpture artist and how you became interested in combining traditional and contemporary elements in your work? Everything happened very quickly: when I was in High School, my art teacher recognised something within my hands because I could mould clay, although I had never done so before. So, one day, he walked me in front of a dark stone and said: “Fabio, now work on this small block of marble”. I took a hammer and chisel and suddenly saw a brilliant white shard emerging from the marble. Let’s say I decided to work with marble at that moment. Marble has a rich history in classical sculpture. How do you approach the challenge of working with this traditional medium while infusing it with a modern aesthetic? My goal is to give life to a double identity: tattooing masterpieces inspired by ancient art means giving them a new life and, at the same time, means creating a collective imagination. Today, tattoos can be considered a dress that anyone can wear, even ancient statues. I believe changing the life of ancient statuary builds a temporal bridge towards universal beauty. >>

PEOPLE

Your work seems to bridge the gap between the past and the present. Could you share some insights into the techniques or methods you use to harmonise these two worlds in your art? Part of my works are reinterpretations within the history of classical art, which we all know. Transforming these ancient works into contemporary pieces has created a passage between the original dimension and ours. It is striking that these idols of the past are not that distant from us. The bodies are the same, and the idea of beauty is something universal that has spanned the centuries. It is a simple concept, but if the doses of ancient and contemporary are correct, the piece works. The contrast generates energy and attracts the viewer; the sculptures are also beautiful, technically perfect, and very difficult to find marble works of this level today. I have sculpted since I was 16 and have always strived for perfection. I always remember that the idea is essential, but we should also pay attention to the works which remain alive over time.

028

FALL_’23 ISSUE

The use of technology and digital tools is becoming more prevalent in art. How do you incorporate modern technology into your creative process, and how does it influence the outcome of your sculptures? Each sculpture is the result of cleverness. Technology, like sweat, is a consequence of a process. For many sculptors, it is indispensable; for others, it represents a limit, but every personality has a strategy. In my case, the use of technology is an accelerator. I use all the technologies available, but to make a difference, there is still a sizeable manual component that I doubt will ever be able to be replaced. If we imagine the creation of a sculpture as climbing a ten-step staircase, current technology eliminates the first three, but many problems are unlikely to be resolved in the short term. In recent years, the number of finished sculptures has significantly decreased with the decrease in artisan labour. >>

PEOPLE Your work often conveys a sense of timelessness. Could you discuss the themes or ideas that inspire you to create sculptures that resonate with both historical and contemporary audiences? I have always tried to be contemporary in reality and not in the world of art. My works seek a confrontation with the actual public. This is the reason why I have chosen to use an understandable concept. The source from which to draw is often not the art world but the real world.

First, I start with an image I try to clarify in my mind. Then, I face it from a technical point of view. I try to understand all the challenges, such as time frames and costs, to name a few. Then, I drive 300 km and choose the marble block according to specific characteristics. The executive process is entrusted to my collaborators. During the day, I take care of the finishes and coordination of the various methods.

As an Italian artist, you are part of a rich artistic tradition. How does your cultural heritage influence your work, and do you find any unique opportunities or challenges in balancing tradition and innovation within the context of Italian art history? My purpose is the celebration of the formal properties of the stone and the conceptual and symbolic properties of human imagination. Attraction and pleasure, surprise and wonder, evocation and dissimulation are the values at play. [ V ]

DESIGN Throughout her internship, Livia had the opportunity to work on multiple projects, each one contributing to her skills and tapping into her creativity. From sewing and graphic design to working with unconventional materials, every task provided a valuable learning experience. One project that particularly stood out was a commission for the iconic artist Beyoncé for her Renaissance World Tour. The opportunity to contribute to a garment that would grace the stage of such a revered performer was a surreal experience. Beyoncé opened the show wearing the dress Livia had contributed to, making it a truly unforgettable moment in her journey at Iris Van Herpen. The dress she had a hand in creating mesmerized the audience in Amsterdam. Working in haute couture demanded unwavering dedication and attention to detail. Livia was exposed to the meticulous craftsmanship required to create aesthetically stunning garments. Fusing traditional techniques with cutting-edge technology was a constant source of fascination for Livia. Her time at Iris Van Herpen taught her that haute couture was not just about designing clothes; it was an art form that pushed the boundaries of what was possible in fashion. However, the pinnacle of her internship was undoubtedly the enthralling journey to Paris Fashion Week 2023, where Iris Van Herpen presented her groundbreaking collection titled “Architectonics.” This collection delved into a visionary concept, daring to imagine humanity’s next frontier - a world with waterborne urbanism that harmonizes with marine ecosystems. In the midst of the intense and fast-paced fashion week preparations, Livia found solace in the camaraderie of her fellow interns. They formed a close-knit bond, supporting and encouraging one another through the demanding moments, even when sleep was a rare luxury. The power of unity and collaboration in the fashion world proved invaluable during their time at Iris Van Herpen. It was a testament to the importance of teamwork and how each individual’s unique

strengths contributed to the collective success of the atelier. Going into the internship, Livia sometimes felt insecure about her ability to handle the tasks assigned to her. However, as time passed and the team showed their trust in her, these insecurities gradually faded away. This experience was pivotal for Livia as it helped her understand the value she brought to the team and boosted her confidence in her craft. She realized that feeling insecure at times was inevitable, and it became a crucial part of her journey to embrace those feelings and learn to trust in her abilities. Through this journey of self-discovery, Livia learned that success in the fashion industry comes not just from technical skills but also from embracing vulnerability and using it as a stepping stone to growth. [ REVISITING A DESIGN LEGACY ] REDISCOVERING THE WORK OF VISIONARY FRENCH DESIGNER JEAN PROUVÉ AT THE VITRA INTERNATIONAL ROADSHOW IN MALTA

T

his October, Vivendo is proud to have hosted the 2023 Vitra International Roadshow, an exhibition dedicated to the oeuvre of legendary French architect, designer and engineer Jean Prouvé. As Vitra’s exclusive partner in Malta, Vivendo showcased Prouvé’s pioneering approach to design, materials and prefabricated structures. Known for his versatility and innovation, Prouvé created everything from furniture and lighting to modular homes and exhibition halls. Guided by functionalism and rational construction, his minimal aesthetic resulted in hardwearing, honest products suited to mass production. Ahead of his time, Prouvé sought to combine utility and economy of materials, suitability to manufacture, and an enduring aesthetic. The exhibition opened on October 14 at The Grist inside The Brewhouse in Birkirkara, with an exclusive preview event for architects and designers on October 13. This event featured a live online talk with Vitra Design Manager Stine Liv Buur, an expert on Prouvé’s work and legacy. Buur, author and design researcher,

occupies the position of Design Manager Classics at Vitra and is responsible for the classics collection development. Throughout his prolific career, Prouvé embodied the constructeur philosophy, letting materials and practical solutions shape designs like the iconic Antony chair. His structural brilliance and mastery of materials not only attracted the admiration of giants like Le Corbusier but also influenced generations of architects including Renzo Piano and Norman Foster amongst others. Since 2002, Vitra has produced authorized re-editions of Prouvé classics in consultation with his family. The company’s long-standing admiration for his work led to the most extensive Prouvé collection worldwide at the Vitra Design Museum. The roadshow making a stop in Malta provided a rare opportunity to appreciate the timeless, trend-defying designs of 20th century master Jean Prouvé. fter a thorough study of the natural topography, the architects were quickly persuaded to let its steep curves be their muses. The result is a structure replete with bold lines and daring volumes. Located in the mountainous landscape of the Estrie region of Quebec’s Eastern Townships, the property stands firmly on a small plateau amid the rolling hills, carefully positioned between two rocky massifs. The site has been deliberately left in its natural state, with the building occupying a minimal footprint in the forest and offering magnifi-

cent views of the surrounding countryside. A peaceful haven bathed in natural light, the family home offers a harmonious interior enveloped in neutral tones. The owner-designers have planned out each space so that every room leverages the most from its natural surroundings. Connected to the two hills that shape the landscape, the three-storey house reaches out to the lush forest. The built-in gazebo counters the home’s imposing height, and the footbridge between floor and land enhances the effect. The building’s height

is also broken up by changes in materials from one level to the next. The third floor is where the magic happens—where the line between indoor and outdoor becomes blurred. Raised above the bedrock, the living areas seem to extend into the mountain’s embrace. From the interior, each side of the house offers a different perspective. Facing east, the house appears to be built high into the trees, whereas facing west gives the feeling of being at ground level. >>

...“This third storey extends across the middle of the floor in a strong horizontal gesture that defines the kitchen space. ”... Inside, the layout is simple and unobtrusive, and in keeping with the surrounding environment. Natural wood and sheet metal combine to create a clean, bright interior with a decidedly contemporary look. Each window has been strategically placed to ensure that the outdoors remains a focal point. The third storey forms a mezzanine, held aloft by beams supporting an exposed-wood floor. This level extends across the middle of the floor in a strong horizontal gesture that defines the kitchen space.

Outside the window, ski hills stand out sharply against the horizon, providing a constant backdrop to the office space. For visitors, part of the mezzanine can easily be converted into a small guest room, and loved ones of all ages can sleep soundly under the alcove. Designed with flexibility in mind, the structure can support an extension to the mezzanine floor to create two additional bedrooms and a family room should the need arise. [ V ]

...“We strive to give a that playful touch and instil curiosity to keep our customers engaged”...

>

What inspired you to become a chef, and what culinary experiences or mentors have influenced your cooking style? What inspired me is the fact that I felt most at home in the kitchen. Most people don’t tolerate the chaos, the heat and the pressure of the kitchen, but I loved every second of it. In terms of experiences, the best were when I worked abroad in Michelin-starred restaurants, seeing different cooking techniques and cultures. Can you describe your approach to creating a menu for ROSAMI? We mainly visualise the experience, not the dish or menu, as they all must unite to create a unique and flowing experience. We strive to give it that playful touch and instil curiosity to keep our customers engaged and question, “What is this ingredient?” or “How did you pair these together?”. What factors influence your menu decisions, and how do you balance innovation with customer preferences? We take a lot into consideration: What is season? How can we make it taste better? When did we eat it the best? Our primary focus is always flavour. It doesn’t matter if it’s not perfectly plated. For us, all that matters is that it gets our audience to say, “This is delicious!”.

What would you say is your signature dish or culinary philosophy, and why is it unique to you? One doesn’t need the most expensive ingredients to make an exceptional dish. We take simple ingredients, sometimes everyday ingredients, the best we can find…be it local or not and turn them into a fantastic dish. That’s where the challenge truly lies. How do you stay updated with the latest food trends and ingredients? Can you share any trends you find particularly exciting or challenging to incorporate into your menu? Nowadays, it’s much easier to stay updated. You can find anything on social media or books, but our favourite way will always be to travel and experience it ourselves. We try trends or techniques just for our repertoire, but they will probably never be used on a menu as they wouldn’t fit our style. Right now, many chefs are returning to classics and keeping it as simple as possible, which is very interesting and far more challenging. Managing a kitchen can be hectic. What are your strategies for maintaining a well-organised and efficient kitchen brigade to consistently deliver highquality meals? Like a family, listening to the team and getting everyone as involved as possible. After all, we tend to spend most of the day togeth-

er, so it is only natural. It is imperative to show a clear goal, where we want to be and what we want to achieve to work together as a unified team. Can you share a memorable culinary experience or moment in your career that has shaped your perspective as a chef? When I was much younger, I worked in a very high-pressure and toxic kitchen with lots of yelling and throwing. I got out of that environment and worked with Chefs who had complete control of their kitchen with just a look or a quiet chat with no unnecessary yelling. I immediately knew that the latter was my managerial style. How do you foster a collaborative and creative environment in your kitchen, and what advice would you give aspiring chefs looking to excel in their culinary careers? We get everyone involved as much as possible when creating a dish. This creates a more collaborative feel and, to the people cooking it, a sense of ownership of the dish itself. For aspiring chefs, I would say to keep their heads low and on the ground, work hard, spend time in the kitchen, travel, eat everywhere and everything, read, listen and grow. >>

EMPOWERED BEAUTY! VAMP SITS DOWN WITH CO-FOUNDERS AND CO-HOSTS OF THE ‘EMPOWERED BEAUTY’ PODCAST AND YOUTUBE CHANNEL, NICOLA POWELL AND DARIA SULDINA

>

In a world where external beauty and inner self-confidence often seem worlds apart, two dynamic women, Nicola Powell and Daria Suldina, have come together to bridge the gap. As co-founders and co-hosts of the ‘Empowered Beauty’ podcast and YouTube channel, they blend the realms of makeup artistry and life coaching to empower women through a unique and powerful concept. Nicola, a professional makeup artist with 25 years of experience, and Daria, a qualified life and business coach with a rich academic background, have created a platform that combines external beauty with internal self-confidence, acceptance, and love. The birth of ‘Empowered Beauty’ was not just the result of chance but a serendipitous meeting of two remarkable women with a shared vision. In her quest to turn her dreams into reality, Nicola crossed paths with Daria, who quickly recognised the potential in their partnership. Their combined expertise and shared passion for YouTube and podcasting made the collaboration an obvious choice. Vamp editor Dayna caught up with the duo to find out more. What is Empowered beauty? Empowered beauty is a concept and brand created by us. We joined our female forces to empower women through external beauty coupled with internal self-confidence, acceptance and love. What inspired the two of you to combine your expertise in makeup artistry and life coaching for a YouTube channel and podcast? I was searching for someone, like a life coach, to help me put all my dreams and ideas into reality and by chance, Daria and I met. We connected quite quickly, and one day, Daria approached me with the idea >> 078

TRENDING of joining our strengths and expertise, and that’s how Empowered Beauty came to be. I wanted to do a YouTube and Podcast channel for some time, and our ideas and concepts worked so well together. It just became a no-brainer. (Nicola) Nicola was one of my first clients, and I saw her desire to have a YouTube and podcast channel to share her expertise in makeup. I was looking for a platform where I could reach even more women to promote such important topics as female leadership and empowerment. We were destined to meet each other and join forces to realise our dreams and create positive social change. (Daria) Can you share some examples of how makeup and self-confidence are interconnected in your work? The synergy between us has been incredible from the very beginning. Even though we come from different backgrounds, ages, and lifestyles, we understand and complement each other perfectly. We love fashion, makeup, and aesthetics, but at the same time, we are ambitious, goal-oriented and driven by the desire to impact the community positively. Our project reflects our life visions, personalities, dreams and aspirations. What content can our viewers and listeners expect from your channel and podcast? Empowered beauty is a concept of not just addressing women’s issues but also providing tangible solutions and combining our vast years of expertise in makeup and coaching. The project promotes a healthy lifestyle, a growth mindset, a positive female role model, etiquette, and trends in fashion, beauty and makeup. You will find quite a wide range of topics. But with the idea that these themes excite us and most women. We also regularly invite special guests to our podcasts that we admire. We’ve been lucky to invite guests from various backgrounds, such as music, fashion, art industries, top-ranking businesswomen, successful athletes, influencers and TV personalities, radio hosts, activists, and mission-driven personalities. How do you manage to strike a balance between makeup/beauty topics and life coaching discussions in your content?

ensuring an equal balance. It works organically. We are in sync on many of our ideas when we come up with them, together or individually. Our interests are very similar, and we spend a lot of time together, so we always brainstorm. Could you share a memorable success story in which your combined expertise positively impacted someone’s life? It is challenging to pick up a specific story, but the positive feedback has been fantastic. And it encourages us to keep progressing and propels us to do more. Also, our project duo (besides the episodes’ content on its own) is very inspirational in the way that it highlights that women can be a ‘powerhouse’ while maintaining their feminine, elegant and creative nature. What advice do you have for individuals looking to enhance their self-confidence through makeup and personal development? I believe that the first step is accepting yourself, flaws and all, and also learning to show love to yourself. A simple beauty routine day and night is a form of selfcare, which is self-love. Wearing a touch of makeup boosts your self-esteem. I firmly believe that, generally, looking good will help you feel good. And I’m not saying you have to go full-on glam, but just enough to make you smile at yourself when you get a glance of your reflection instead of ‘Oh my god, I look a state ‘. (Nicola). The best advice that worked for me is to improve the relationship with yourself first – recognise, accept and appreciate who you are and every step of your journey. Discover your strengths, talents, and passions and find a mission worth waking up for every morning. Make everything possible to help people around to achieve their dreams. And when becoming confident and booming, don’t underestimate the importance and power of kindness, positivity and humanity. (Daria) Watch Empowered beauty episodes on Youtube, listen to them and join the community on Instagram and FB
