The Audi skysphere concept shows how the brand is redefining luxury in the future – it’s no longer just about driving. The concept car was designed with the clear objective of offering its occupants captivating and world-class experiences. To give passengers the maximum amount of freedom, the Audi skysphere concept was designed for two different driving experiences: a grand touring experience and a sports experience. This makes use of a spectacular technical detail – the variable wheelbase. Electric motors and a sophisticated mechanism with body and frame components that slide into one another make it possible to vary the wheelbase itself and the exterior length of the car by 250 millimeters. At the same time, the vehicle’s ground

clearance is adjusted by 10 millimeters to enhance comfort and driving dynamics. With the touch of button, the driver can take advantage of their freedom and choose their own driving experience – either they pilot their 4.94-meter-long e-roadster themselves in “Sports” mode with a reduced wheelbase, while the rear-wheel steering ensures that the vehicle remains extremely agile despite its dimensions. Or they can choose to be chauffeured around in a 5.19-meter GT in the autonomous “Grand Touring” driving mode while enjoying the sky and the scenery, maximum legroom, and the services offered by a seamlessly integrated digital ecosystem.

When the car is stationary, the dashboard lowers and the driver’s area becomes a comfortable seating corner – the “daybed”.

Skysphere From Front Cover In this mode, the steering wheel and pedals move into an invisible area; the feeling of space in the concept car opens up completely new realms of possibility for such a sporty convertible. Meanwhile, the Audi skysphere automatically keeps an eye on the road and traffic with its sensor system and drives the occupants safely to their destination. Similar to how the interior design offers a new, contemporary interpretation of luxury, digitization and the ecosystem open up unprecedented levels of freedom and worlds of experience for the vehicle’s passengers. Thanks to Audi’s own services and the ability to integrate digital services, the possibilities are nearly endless. In addition, the passengers can share their experience on the road with friends via social media, with images of the interior and the surrounding area. The vehicle also takes care of everyday tasks that go beyond the ride itself. For example, the autonomous Audi skysphere concept picks up its passengers with information about their current destination and independently handles parking and charging. But the visual inspiration from 4

its predecessor is limited to the concept car’s dimensions and typical proportions with a rather compact cabin and long front end. A look under the hood of the Horch reveals an imposing straight-eight engine with a displacement of 5 liters. The Audi skysphere, on the other hand, mainly has electric drive components between the front axle and the windshield, such as the charger and the DC/DC converter, plus the actuators and electronic and mechanical components for the adaptive wheelbase. It also features a spacious trunk filled with two golf bags specially designed for the concept car. The drive system: 465 kW of power “New technologies like electrification, digitalization, and autonomous driving gave us the opportunity to create an experience that goes way beyond the one that typical roadsters offer today,” said design project manager Gael Buzyn. An electric motor positioned on the powered rear axle is responsible for delivering power to the wheels of the Audi skysphere. A total of 465 kilowatts of power and 750 Newton meters of torque have an easy time with the roadster, which only weighs around 1,800 kilograms. The weight distribution of around 60 percent on October 2021

the powered rear axle results in ample traction and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just four seconds, if required. The Audi skysphere’s battery modules are primarily positioned behind the cabin – an ideal configuration for the vehicle’s center of gravity and agility. Further modules can be found between the seats in the center tunnel of the skysphere interior – another position chosen in favor of vehicle dynamics. The battery’s capacity is expected to be more than 80 kWh, giving the car a range of more than 500 kilometers according to the WLTP standard, at least in the economical GT mode. The chassis: rear-wheel steering and adaptive air suspension The vehicle features double wishbone axles in the front and the rear. The upper and lower wishbones are forged or cast from aluminum. Steering takes place via a steer-bywire system that controls both the front and the rear wheels. Because the system is not mechanically connected to the front axle, the driver can select different steering ratios and steering settings – all at the touch of a button. This allows the steering to be adjusted from extremely direct to comfortable, but also from high self-aligning forcwww.IneedOEMparts.com

The rear end is also dominated by a digitally controlled LED surface that extends across the entire width of the vehicle. Countless red LEDs are scattered like rubies across the vertical rear surface. Reflections create dynamic lighting and shadow effects when the lighting units are switched on and off. es to minimal self-aligning forces, for example when parking. The rear-axle steering and adaptive wheelbase also contribute to the car’s small turning radius. A long-established Audi chassis technology ensures that the suspension delivers the necessary level of versatility – the latest evolutionary stage of Audi’s adaptive air suspension has been implemented in the concept car and features three independent air chambers to provide a comfortable base suspension. Individual chambers can be deactivated for a more sporty ride with fast acceleration. The result is that the characteristic curve of the spring becomes more progressive, reducing roll and pitch to a minimum. Lowering the body by 10 mm reduces aerodynamic drag – particularly relevant when driving long distances. The Audi skysphere’s active suspension plays a key role in the versatility of the car’s handling characteristics. When simply coasting along, the individual wheels are selectively raised or lowered to compensate for unevenness and undulations in the road surface – the result of a symbiosis between the navigation system’s digital predictions and the active chassis’ sophisticated control and actuation systems. Mounted on www.IneedOEMparts.com

aerodynamically styled 23-inch alloy rims, the 285/30 tires strike a perfect balance between suitability for longdistance trips thanks to minimal rolling resistance and a sporty, active driving style with high longitudinal and lateral acceleration. The exterior: reverence without retro When it comes to their footprint – 5.23 meters in length versus 5.19; a width of 1.85 versus 2.00 meters – it is easy to see the similarity between the legendary Horch 853 convertible and the Audi skysphere. A striking difference, on the other hand, can be found in their height – the legendary Horch, with its iconic design, towered up to 1.77 meters depending on the body shape, while its autonomous descendant, the Audi skysphere, ducks down to the road in Sport mode at 1.23 meters flat, with an optimized center of gravity and aerodynamics. The concept car pays its respects to the classic model without merely remaining a retro imitation. After all, apart from its dimensions, it’s the lines that make a real difference. With its wide curved and flared wheel arches typical of the brand, the skysphere emphasizes the wide track – a visible indication of its dynamic talents. Viewed from the October 2021

side, the proportions are impressive with a long hood and – especially at the front – a short overhang. The surfaces of the wheel arches and front hood are organically curved. The rear end was developed in a wind tunnel and combines elements of a speedster and a shooting brake with large glass surfaces in a traditional streamlined design. Two overnight bags designed specifically for the Audi skysphere find space under the glass, and are held in place with straps that are stretched in a crosswise pattern. The front end – although no longer serving as a radiator grill – clearly features the brand’s typical Singleframe and the three-dimensionally designed, illuminated emblem with the four rings. The entire Singleframe and also the adjacent surfaces on the sides are designed with white LED elements to literally act as a stage for visual effects – both functional effects as well as moving welcome sequences when the vehicle is opened and closed. Gentle dimming and a structured, rhythmically pulsating light produce an elegant effect. The daytime running lights in the side front sections, in turn, give the lighting units a resolute, focused “gaze.” If the wheelSkysphere Please To Turn Page 38 Southern Automotive Journal

Subaru Toughens Position on Alternative Parts

Subaru has updated its position statement on the use of alternative parts with stronger language to clarify the carmaker’s stance on the use of recycled, salvaged, aftermarket and reconditioned parts. “Subaru of America simply wants to be as clear as possible regarding its position on the proper repair of Subaru vehicles,” said Devin Wilcox, Subaru’s Collision Certification Manager regarding the need for the newly worded position statement. In the company’s prior statement regarding the use of alternative parts, the company explained the use of Subaru Genuine Parts would “help ensure the vehicle is restored back to its original pre-collision condition” and the use of non-OEM parts “could compromise occupant safety in a subsequent collision.” While both of those warnings

still exist in the new position statement released this month, the newest version states unambiguously that “Subaru of America, Inc. does NOT approve of the use of recycled, salvaged, aftermarket, or recondition parts that may not be manufactured to the same specifications or tolerances as Subaru Genuine Parts.” (Emphasis Subaru’s.) Wilcox said, “These issues are addressed in both this position statement and in Subaru’s repair procedures, available via the Subaru Technical Information System (STIS).” “Generic collision parts may use different materials and manufacturing techniques, resulting in quality or performance that differs from OEM parts,” Wilcox said. “OEM replacement parts are identical to the parts originally installed on Subaru vehicles from the factory, and they are engineered to meet the same strict safety and quality

standards.” “These issues have become increasingly important in light of advanced driver assistance systems and related technologies,” Wilcox said. One interesting example of this concern documented by Snap-on involved a 2018 Subaru Forester. In attempting to calibrate the blind spot radar system behind a newly installed aftermarket bumper, the shop found that the driver’s side unit failed to calibrate. In this case, the failure was caused by the unfortunate placement of a metallic sticker inside the bumper, rather than a problem with the bumper material itself. The calibration eventually succeeded once the sticker was removed, but not before the shop needlessly wasted extra time and effort Subaru Please to Turn Page 11

collision repair research and training development to repair these complex vehicles will be paramount, he added. “The complexity of new vehicles continues to influence the scale, scope and approach of our training curriculum, requiring new technical knowledge, skill sets and additional resources to properly manage our growing and more sophisticated product and service portfolio,” Peevy said. The Chicagoland location will provide enhanced levels of accessibility for industry partners and learners, with dedicated areas for ADAS, Telematics, Subaru From Page 6 to discover what was causing the problem. I-CAR explains how foreign materials can interfere with some ADAS systems in an article on blind spot monitoring systems. “With the radar being behind the bumper cover, the radio waves sent out by the sensor needs to pass through the substrate that is in

Electric/Hybrid Vehicles, including commercial delivery vans, also research into emerging educational technologies such as AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality), Peevy said, adding that the facility will deepen OEM technical collaboration in these technical areas, with more focus on Vehicle Technology Specific Training (VTST), real-time videos and custom training solutions. The new location will also host industry workshops and live classes for not only technicians but vocational students as well, serving as a Chicagoland north fixed training site for I-CAR.

“The industry is at an exciting crossroads of dynamic change driven by nonstop innovation, repair complexity and technology advancements,” said Kyle Thompson, I-CAR Chair, Board of Directors and Assistant Vice President, USAA. “I-CAR remains passionate in leading the industry forward, in responsible, relevant and robust ways, and we couldn’t be more excited to take this bold step forward, together, with the inter-industry. We are truly making I-CAR more relevant and valuable for the industry as we look to our collective future.”n

front of them. Passing through a plastic bumper cover can slow down the radio waves. This is programmed into the radar sensors to consider the slower rate. However, when other materials, such as bumper repair material, are in the sensors field of vision, it can slow down the radio waves even more. This can cause false readings from the radar unit.” When asked what a repair facility might do if they should receive

pushback from a bill-payer on this new position statement, Wilcox said, “Subaru is here to support our customers, collision repair centers and billpayers in restoring vehicles as closely as possible to their pre-collision condition. If there are any questions regarding those repairs, or Subaru’s position regarding replacement parts, they may be sent to CertifiedCollisionSupport@ subaru.com.”n

New Gulf States Collision Association Will Replace MCRA, Welcome La., Ala. Shops By John Huetter Mississippi Collision Repair Association Executive Director Josh Kent on announced his trade group would change its name to the Gulf States Collision Association and open to shops in Louisiana and Alabama. “We are just adding those

states,” Kent said. He said an Alabama body shop has joined the board, and he’s in talks with a contingent of Baton Rouge, La.-area repairers. Any repairers in the three states interested in joining the expanded groups should contact Kent at oregon.josh.kent@ gmail.com.

The revamped organization’s board will “absolutely” feature a mix of representation from the three locations, he said. Kent likened the new multistate trade group to the Carolina’s Collision Association he also oversees as executive director. That organization spans

both North and South Carolina. The new organization would hold meetings in the various states, and “we’ll bounce around some training classes in each state.” Kent noted the three states are fairly close together. The latest Census data available estimates Alabama had 498 “Automotive Body, Paint, and Interior Repair and Maintenance” companies in 2018. (The federal NAICS category does include a few peripheral industries like upholstery shops but is mostly collision centers). Together, the nearly 500 companies had 542 shops and 3,241 workers. The average employee made $43,276. Louisiana had 459 auto body businesses running 473 locations with 2,996 workers in 2018. The average employee pulled in $45,187. Mississippi contained 304 repair companies holding 320 shops. The state’s 1,873 auto body industry professionals averaged $42,084 in wages. The New Gulf States Collision Association is now open to shops in Louisiana and Alabama of the auto body repair industry’s first in-person trade shows since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. The industry will see two Collision Industry Conferences, NORTHEAST, SEMA, and “then will be us.” The show will be held at the Gateway Conference Center in Richburg, S.C. “Southeast Collision Conference is a 3-day conference open to all collision industry professionals and will contain numerous educational classes, presentations and a trade show,” the

All-new 2022 Kia Carnival Multi-purpose Vehicle

“Slide-Flex” seating for 8-passenger versions allow multiple configurations including a sliding second row center seat which, when in the forward-most position, allows the front passenger easy access to the baby or child riding in it. This seat also converts into a functional table. Kia calls the 2022 Carnival a multi-purpose vehicle. The Carnival is loaded with features including third-row seating, sliding rear doors, 8-passenger and 7-passenger versions, and lots of useful space. Some might say that sounds like a minivan. After all, minivans are the most useful vehicles on the planet. The Carnival is a choppedtop minivan. How cool is that? Chopped and channeled is an oldschool way to make a not-so-cool car a very cool ride. The roof, the pillars and windows are cut down, lowering the overall roofline. The side windows on the new Carnival are chopped off just enough. Extending the hood changes the front-end appearance, making it look like an SUV and the rear quarter also resembles an SUV. Add a chrome sail trim behind the back doors and the side profile indeed looks SUV-ish. 14

Roomier and featuring more utility with best-in-class passenger room and best-in-class cargo room. The Carnival is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine making a best-in-class 290 horsepower. This powertrain provides up to 3,500 pounds of towing capacity for confident trailer, boat, or camper excursions. And that confidence is amplified by an expansive roster of standard Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Together, these elements make Carnival an exceptional combination of modern design, capability, safety and luxury. The 2022 Carnival is underpinned by the same all-new 3rd generation "N3" platform as the capable Sorento and sporty K5. Kia's engineers made sure it was October 2021

lighter, stronger and quieter than the outgoing minvan architecture. As part of Kia's overall commitment to safety, the Carnival MPV has a more comprehensive list of standard Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features than any in the segment, including these standard ADAS systems: Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) which assists the driver when braking to help prevent a collision or lessen the effects in certain conditions if a pedestrian or vehicle is detected in front and uses automatic braking to avoid or mitigate an impact. CIF Foundation Ready to Help Repairer Community After Hurricane Ida By Repairer Driven News The Collision Industry Foundation, the 501(c)(3) charitable arm of the collision repair industry, is monitoring the effects of Hurricane Ida on the repairer community and stands ready to offer emergency relief, CIF’s president said Monday. “We know we will receive requests for aid, and ask the industry to make tax deductible donations so we may assist,” said Michael Quinn. He said Ida has prompted “memories of our Katrina relief efforts 16 years ago.” “We have relief funds in place, and we are always looking for donations, whether on an individual basis or on a corporate basis,” said Jordan Hendler, a CIF board member who was executive director during the time of the organization’s Hurricane Katrina response in 2005-06. Even before the extent of the losses is known, individuals and corporations who are looking to help can made donations securely through the CIF website. “Even if it’s $5, every amount helps,” she said. CIF’s mission, as stated on its website, is to “provide emergency relief by securing and dis-

tributing donations to collision repair professionals who have experienced significant losses due to natural disasters or other catastrophic events.” The foundation was established in 2001 to allow for taxdeductible contributions for the National Auto Body Council. Since its inception, the CIF has responded to nine major events, most recently the COVID-19 pandemic, during which it disbursed more than $250,000 to those in the auto body community who suffered financial losses. Josh Kent, executive director of the not-for-profit Gulf States Collision Association, which includes shops in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, said the organization stands ready to help, once the need has been identified. “We’re definitely ready as an association to be there for them,” Kent said Monday morning. “It’s so early that I don’t know what help we’re going to offer,” he added. “It’s kind of a wait-and-see game.” Kent said Gulf States represents about 50 auto body repair shops in the affected area. He said he will be reaching out to shops,

member and non-member alike, in the coming days. He estimated that some 50 member shops might lie in the hurricane’s path. Kent is also executive director of the two other not-forprofit organizations, the Tennessee Collision Repairers Association and the Carolinas Collision Association, which represent shops in other parts of the country that could potentially be affected by Ida. Hendler said that many of the requests for help after Katrina were from technicians who had lost expensive tools. “Sadly, most technicians don’t have insurance for their own tools, and they own their own tools,” she said. Few shops, she added, include technicians’ tools in their own insurance policies. As a consequence, these technicians were facing the loss of their livelihoods, in addition to whatever other damage the storm might have done, she said. Repairer Driven News previously reported that CIF coordinated about $250,000 in donations and helped about 150 households after Katrina. Reprinted Content: Copyright © 2021. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Center for Capital Markets Competitiveness released a report detailing how a proposed 98% tax increase on carried interest capital gains would reduce investment, lead to widespread job losses, and decrease tax revenues at the local, state, and federal levels. The report, “Impact on Jobs, Tax Revenue, and Economic Growth of Proposed Tax Increase on Carried Interest,” estimates that, if enacted, the proposed increase in carried interest taxes would result in: Job losses. Estimated loss of 4.9 million jobs within five years across the United States; Declining tax revenues. Combined federal, state, and local governments’ annual net revenue losses could total $96 billion (revenues used to fund other programs) by year five; and, Lost retirement earnings. In particular, pension funds would lose up to $3 billion annually (a loss to pension fund retirees, which may force state and local governments to make up such shortfalls). Private equity, venture capital, real estate partnerships, and their portfolio companies, which account for over 25 million American jobs and provide an annual estimated combined federal, state, and local tax revenues of over $493 billion, would be directly hit by the tax increase. The impact, however, would be broadly felt across the economy because of the chilling effect it will have on investment activity. “New carried interest taxes would harm the innovators who are leading America out of the pandemic and the main street businesses that are fueling the economic recovery,” said Tom Quaadman, Executive Vice President of the U.S. Chamber Center for Capital Markets Competitiveness. “Moderna, for example, was able to tap private equity and venture-capital funding to conduct the research that led to the Covid-19 vaccine. Similarly, private equity funding provided a lifeline to thousands of American businesses and real estate partnerships that are crucial for new home construction and affordable housing. Almost doubling certain taxes on private equity and venture capital investments will restrict access to capital, harming job creation and innovation.” Imposing a new tax increase on carried interest is just one of the dozens of reasons the U.S. Chamber of Commerce opposes the $3.5 trillion tax and spend budget reconciliation. n

Toyota “Collision Assistance” Mobile App Lists Certified and Non-Certified Shops OEM-certified collision repairers anxious for the day when automakers detect a vehicle has been in an accident and automatically offer assistance to the driver – including information on certified body shops – may not see the new mobile “Collision Assistance” app from Toyota and Lexus as a significant a step toward that vision. For one thing, “accidents are not detected with the app at this time,” according to Toyota. It’s purely dependent on the driver to choose to launch it either at the scene of an accident or later. For another, the shop locator within the app will include both certified and non-certified body shops, although it will identify which shops are certified. Toyota teamed up with CCC Intelligent Solutions to develop the app which, once launched by the driver, initially confirms he or she is safe and not

injured. It then guides a driver through the process of documenting the accident details, pre-populating the report with the vehicle information. The app then gives the driver the option of transmitting that information directly to their insurance company. An animated video about the app provided by Toyota shows the shop locator listing two Toyota certified body shops, but the automaker acknowledged that non-certified shops will be listed as well. Shops listed will be determined as “part of our partnership with CCC and their network,” the automaker told Repairer-Driven News. Marc Fredman, CCC’s chief strategy officer, said the app will identify “shops within a default radius of 25 miles from the scene of the accident.” That will include not only dealer-owned shops but also “all shops within that

radius that are part of CCC’s ecosystem of 26,000 repair shops.” Collision Assistance is an extension of the “Safety Connect” suite of features available to Toyota and Lexus owners who subscribe or are within the trial period of select 2018 model year or newer Toyota and Lexus vehicles. “Safety for our customers is paramount,” Steve Basra, connected technologies group vice president for Toyota Motor North America, said in a press release announcing “Collision Assistance” mobile app. “The minutes following an accident can be critical — drivers are often confused and uncertain about what to do. By incorporating ‘Collision Assistance’ into our owner app, we can offer help when it is needed.” The Toyota and Lexus owners app downloads are available for iPhone or Android smartphones.n

Ford F150 From Page 8 play off-roading data and turn-by-turn navigation. F-150’s new optional Interior Work Surface is ideal for signing documents, working on a 15-inch laptop or enjoying a meal when parked. It is available in both bench and captain’s chair seating configurations on XL to Limited. Knowing many customers prefer a console shifter, Ford has created a stowable unit for F-150, which easily folds into the center console with the push of a button and allows full access to the large work surface when in park. Class-exclusive Max Recline Seats available on King Ranch, Platinum and Limited models provide ultimate comfort during downtime. Max Recline Seats fold flat to nearly 180 degrees, with the bottom cushion rising to meet the back cushion and the upper back support rotating forward up to 10 degrees for maximum comfort. Available lockable, fold-flat rear storage adds a vault to the F-150 that extends the width of the rear seats. It’s as easy as lifting the bottom cushion of the rear seat, dropping valuables in and locking them away for safe keeping. 22

Class-exclusive Max Recline Seats available on King Ranch, Platinum and Limited models provide ultimate comfort during downtime. Max Recline Seats fold flat to nearly 180 degrees. Great for storing long items like fishing rods or blueprints, it even has a divider to keep gear organized. Every all-new F-150 comes standard with new cleats mounted to the sides of the tailgate to act as tie-down locations for extra-long items in the bed. New clamp pockets are built into the tailgate of every truck so customers can hold materials down for precision work. An available flat Tailgate Work Surface also includes integrated rulers, a mobile device holder, cupholder and pencil holder. The all-new F-150 is the only lightOctober 2021

Trailer Reverse Guidance, made popular on Super Duty, uses the truck’s high-resolution cameras to provide multiple views along with helpful graphics that tell drivers which way to turn the steering wheel while backing up. Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which makes backing up a trailer as easy as turning a dial, continues on F-150. every trim level from XL to Limited. The full hybrid powertrain is the most powerful engine in the all-new F-150 lineup, delivering 430 horsepower and 570 lb.ft. of torque. The PowerBoost system adds instant electric torque to Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 and is targeting an EPA-estimated range of approximately 700 miles on a single tank of gas and will deliver a maximum available12,700 pounds towing. PowerBoost combines Ford’s proven EcoBoost engine and 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission with a 35-kilowatt (47-horsepower) electric motor integrated into the transmission, as well as software calibrated specially for truck use, including drive modes like tow/haul mode to help customers better manage towing heavy trailers. The electric motor applies regenerative braking energy capture to help recharge the 1.5-kilowatt-hour lithiumion battery. The battery is efficiently packaged underneath the truck, leaving the cab and cargo box of PowerBoost F-150 as spacious for passengers and cargo as other comparably equipped F-150 models. The system is capable of sustained battery usage at extreme outside temperatures or under heavy loads. Power isn’t only important under

the hood. Available Pro Power Onboard expands F-150’s capability by bringing generator levels of exportable power to work sites, camp sites and everyday life. Pro Power Onboard is available with a 2.0-kilowatt output on the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 and 5.0-liter V8, while PowerBoost-equipped F-150 comes standard with 2.4 kilowatts of output or an optional 7.2 kilowatts of output. Power is accessible through in-cabin outlets and up to four cargo bed-mounted 120-volt 20-amp outlets, with a 240-volt 30-amp outlet on the 7.2-kilowatt version. The system even provides power on the move to charge tool batteries in between jobs. All-new SYNC 4 is standard, helping keep owners connected and make their days more productive with more natural voice control available as well as real-time mapping and customizable information on demand. The technology builds on more than 10 years of SYNC innovation by helping minimize distractions with hands-free voice control as well as core features such as making phone calls and selecting music. With twice the computing power of the previous-generation system, new SYNC 4 can wirelessly connect smartphones without the USB cord for seamless integration of Apple CarPlay™ or

Android Auto™ compatibility as well as SYNC AppLink® apps like Waze and Ford+Alexa. All-new F-150 offers the latest driver-assist features as part of Ford Co-Pilot360™ 2.0. More features are now standard on XL, including Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Detection to help avoid a possible collision with another vehicle or a pedestrian, rearview camera with dynamic hitch assist, auto high-beam headlamps and auto on/off headlamps. F-150 also adds 10 new driverassist features and is the only pickup to offer Active Drive Assist, which allows for hands-free driving on more than 100,000 miles of divided highways in all 50 states and Canada. Its advanced driver-facing camera tracks head position and driver eye gaze to enable hands-free driving when available. It allows owners on certain sections of pre-mapped, divided highways to drive with their hands off the steering wheel – if they continue to pay attention to the road ahead – granting them an additional level of comfort during long drives. Other new available features include Intersection Assist, which detects oncoming traffic while the driver is attempting a left turn.n

Dodge HEMI® Challenge Celebrates 20th Anniversary at the "Big Go" The ever popular Dodge HEMI® Challenge celebrates its 20th anniversary at the National Hot Rod Association's (NHRA) prestigious Dodge//SRT U.S. Nationals, affectionately known as the "Big Go," at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis. The longest running, continuous, specialty race in NHRA history features heads-up, wheel standing, side-by-side racing of vintage HEMI-powered 1968 Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda "package cars" that have dominated the NHRA Super Stock (SS/AH) class for more than five decades. In celebration of the classic muscle cars that contributed to the Dodge and Mopar brands' legendary reputation and success at the drag strip, Dodge//SRT NHRA U.S. Nationals Grand Marshal Herb "Mr. 4 Speed" McCandless will also serve in the same role for the Dodge HEMI Challenge and lead the field of qualified Darts and Barracudas down the Indianapolis track's fabled return road in a parade prior to Friday's eliminations rounds aboard his own original 1968 Super Stock HEMI Dart. The winner of the Dodge HEMI Challenge takes home the uniquely crafted 42.6-lb. trophy, made from a 426 HEMI cylinder head. All 16 drivers who reach the elimination rounds will receive cash rewards, with the winner earning an extra $15,000 prize. Among the participants vying for the iconic custom-made trophy and bragging rights will be driver Bucky Hess II, winner of the inaugural edition of the (then Mopar) Dodge HEMI Challenge that took place in 2001. www.IneedOEMparts.com

"It was the best HEMI Challenge ever and to be able to share that with my wife and son made it so special," said Hess. "When we came up the return road at Indy, the stands were full and the whole crowd stood and gave us a standing ovation as we drove by in my HEMI Barracuda. It looked like the wave at a football game. They (NHRA) were running a Pro Stock qualifying session and they stopped them to let us drive through to the front of the tower. Like they say, the first is the one they will always remember and I'll never forget that evening at the 2001 NHRA U.S. Nationals." Jim Daniels Jr. returns in his vintage HEMI-powered '68 Dodge Dart as a four-time winner (2016-2019) after seeing his record four-year, 19-round consecutive win streak come to an end last year with a first round loss. "The success that we have had in the Dodge HEMI Challenge feels like you're on cloud nine," said the 25-yearold Daniels, who remains a favorite as a front runner at this year's event. "Having the opportunity to win one Dodge HEMI Challenge is an absolute dream come true, but being able to win four consecutive events was out of this world. This is a race we prepare for all year so when you are victorious at October 2021

the end of the day, it's all a big dream come true. "The competition is definitely going to be tough at this year's event," added Daniels. "You are going to have a handful of cars that are more than capable of winning the event. You can't take any of these guys lightly as they are all gunning for that awesome HEMI cylinder head trophy and the $15,000 check. The competition will be tough, so you must be prepared. The Dodge HEMI Challenge is extremely important to me. This is the one race we put a ton of time and resources into each and every year and it is by far one of my greatest achievements in my racing career." A new winner was crowned last year when Stephen Yantus III drove a '68 Barracuda from the No. 1 qualifier position through eliminations, where he set the low elapsed time and top speed of the event with an 8.410-second, 158.65-mph run to earn the victory and coveted trophy. "The 2020 event was the fourth time we ran at the Dodge HEMI Challenge and the first three times didn't treat us very well," said Yantus. "We started off very green and had to learn a bunch as quick as we could learn it. These elephants (426 HEMI engine) are very difficult to understand and master how to best get them down the track. Not too many people were stepping up to the plate to help us. This class is very competitive and secrets stay secrets. You have to earn your stripes and take your licks in the SS/AH class. But there isn't another class out there like it. Racing these iconic HEMI package cars has always been my dream and they're amazing to watch."n Southern Automotive Journal

Honda Offers Details on New Training, Transition of Certification Program By Repairer Driven News Shops certified through Honda’s “ProFirst Certified Collision” program will begin to transition to the “Honda and Acura Certified Collision” program on their next renewal date, the automaker said during an August 12 VeriFacts Automotive Guild 21 webinar. “Any ProFirst shop currently will remain ProFirst until their renewal audit,” Dane Rounkles, manager of wholesale collision parts for American Honda, said during the webinar, noting that the transition may not be completed with all certified shops until next March. “I know it took a long time to get everybody to really understand what ‘ProFirst’ was. But we really believe this will bring a lot more value to our certified network, having it branded as Honda and Acura certified.” Rounkles acknowledged the automaker still has “a long road ahead” as it revamps the certification program, but that it will soon start supplying ProFirst shops with details about the transition process. If a certified shop’s renewal date arrives before the automaker is ready to convert shops to the new program, the shop will remain certified until the conversion process is in place. One of the significant changes

Honda is making involves its training programs. While technicians and estimators that completed the Hondaspecific I-CAR course required as part of the ProFirst program will still get credit for that training, Honda has transitioned to five online classes now on the VeriFacts Academy. Scott Kaboos, who now manages technical training for the automaker, said he expects five additional online courses to be available in the next 30 days. Four of those are ADAS-related, and the fifth is on scan tools and the Honda diagnostic system. All of those online courses are available to anyone in the industry, not just certified shops. Pricing for now will remain at the current $49.95 per course, Rounkles said. “As a matter of fact, we’ve got some promotions coming up to make it a little easier for shops to take the available training,” he said. Kaboos also has overseen the development of a Honda and Acura training center in a Chicago suburb that is currently scheduled to resume offering hands-on training in October. “The last class we were able to run here was also the first class we ran here, at the end of January in 2020,” Kaboos said, said the new training center shut

down shortly thereafter because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The training center will offer a 2-day hands-on ADAS class. “You’ll learn how to aim and calibrate every safety system on every Honda and Acura vehicle,” Kaboos said. “It’s a really intense class. It does take 16 full hours.” The other 2-day hands-on training course that will be offered will cover attachment methods for structural repair. “This is for technicians only,” Kaboos said of the structural repair course. “It’s going to challenge them to apply the service information to a repair of a Honda prop. They will have to follow the service information, setting up the welders and actually doing the repair.” Kaboos said an in-shop version of the structural course is being developed that will be led by VeriFacts coaches at shops that don’t wish to send employees to the Chicago training center. None of the hands-on training will be required as part of the Honda and Acura certification program – at least for now. “I think part of that is because of COVID. We don’t want to require any-

body to get out if they don’t feel safe doing so,” Kaboos said. He said Honda is also working with Mike Anderson of Collision Advice to finalize another course that

will cover repair planning using Honda service information. That course will be offered virtually, he said, and will focus on, “how does Honda say to do the repair, how do you get that

on the estimate, and how do you get paid to do it properly.”Reprinted Contented: Copyright © 2021. DRIVEN COMMUNICATIONS INC. All Rights Reserved.n

space and versatility and a third row seat. In this case a minivan would be a perfect fit. (After all, minivans are the most useful vehicles on the planet). The next thing I hear is "I am NOT driving a minivan!" KIA is not the first to attempt to make the minivan cool, but maybe they are the first to pull it off. Designed at Kia's California studio, the Carnival wears a bold and boxy appearance that would genuinely make you take a second look before you stereotype the driver as a soccer mom.n www.IneedOEMparts.com

General Motors to Recall Additional Bolt EVs General Motors is voluntarily expanding the current Chevrolet Bolt EV recall to cover the remaining 2019 and all 2020-2022 model year vehicles, including the Bolt EUV. In rare circumstances, the batteries supplied to GM for these vehicles may have two manufacturing defects – a torn anode tab and folded separator – present in the same battery cell, which increases the risk of fire. Out of an abundance of caution, GM will replace defective battery modules in Chevrolet Bolt EVs and EUVs with new modules, with an expected additional cost of approximately $1 billion. “Our focus on safety and doing the right thing for our customers guides every decision we make at GM,” said Doug Parks, GM executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. “As leaders in the transition to an all-electric future, we know that

This new recall population includes: 9,335 (6,989 in the U.S. and 1,212 in Canada) – 2019 model year Bolt EVs that were not included in the previous recall 63,683 (52,403 in the U.S. and 9,019 in Canada) – 2020–2022 model year Chevrolet Bolt EVs and EUVs building and maintaining trust is critical. GM customers can be confident in our commitment to taking the steps to ensure the safety of these vehicles.” After further investigation into the manufacturing processes at LG and disassembling battery packs, GM discovered manufacturing defects in certain battery cells produced at LG manufacturing facilities beyond the Ochang, Korea, plant. GM and LG are working to rectify the cause of these defects. In the mean-

time, GM is pursuing commitments from LG for reimbursement of this field action. To provide customers peace of mind, batteries with these new modules will come with an 8-year/100,000-mile limited warranty (or 8-year/160,000 km limited warranty in Canada). GM is working aggressively with LG to increase production as soon as possible. GM will notify customers when replacement parts are ready. n

Skysphere From Page 5 base is changed, the LEDs in the front and rear display a specially composed dynamic sequence. The rear end is also dominated by a digitally controlled LED surface that extends across the entire width of the vehicle. Countless red LEDs are scattered like rubies across the vertical rear surface. Reflections create dynamic lighting and shadow effects when the lighting units are switched on and off. Upon changing the wheelbase and thus the operating mode from GT to Sport, the light signature also changes and sends a clear indication of the changed character of the Audi skysphere concept, particularly in the area around the Singleframe. A characteristic feature of the side view are the rocker panels, which seem to protrude into the rear wheel arch – a necessary feature when varying the wheelbase actually pushes it backwards. The rocker panel is attached to the front end of the car, and as it moves, the panel also slides to the rear under the fixed door. In the process, the wheelbase is reduced from the standard size of an A8 L to the

significantly more compact size of the curve-compatible Audi RS 5 – 25 centimeters make all the difference. And not just technically, but also visually and, above all, in terms of the driving experience. There’s no doubt that the Audi skysphere concept has two personalities – a GT and a luxury sports car. The key differences, however, can only be enjoyed in the interior, because here, behind the rear-hinged and wideopening doors, the Audi skysphere offers highly contrasting experiences. The interior: two spheres of experience in one When it comes to the three upcoming concept cars Audi skysphere, Audi grandsphere, and Audi urbansphere, the brand is placing the space that surrounds the passengers (“sphere”) and which becomes an experience for them – the interior – at the center of its designs. This is because all three vehicles are designed for level 4 autonomous driving – meaning that in certain defined road and traffic situations, the driver can delegate complete responsibility to the car and no longer has to intervene. As a result, control elements such as the steering wheel and pedals

can be swiveled into an invisible position and thereby completely removed from the interior. And passengers, including the one in the front left seat, can enjoy a new form of freedom – the freedom to relax in the open air, enjoy the scenery and the wind, or interact with the Internet and the world thanks to the connection with the digital ecosystem in the Audi skysphere. Free of controls, the interior appears as a light, spacious environment, inspired in many areas by the Art Deco universe. The comfortable seats boast the visual elegance of designer furnishings, yet they fulfill the functions of an car seat in driving mode without any compromises – side support and safety features are part of the package. They are upholstered in sustainably produced microfiber fabric and, thanks to their variable position in the interior, offer the kind of freedom to move and legroom that can otherwise only be experienced when flying first class on an airplane. Environmentally certified eucalyptus wood and synthetically produced imitation leather are other sustainably manufactured materials that contribute to creating an unparalleled experience in the vehicle’s interior.n
